Political corruption is widespread in contemporary societies, and is regarded by some analysts of the Third World as the single most important obstacle to economic development and political integration. Certainly the frequent regime changes which have occurred in Africa in the last several decades have been accompanied by charges of gross administrative malfeasance and promise to introduce honest government. Perhaps no country in the continent has devoted more attention and energy to continuing allegations of corruption than Nigeria. Indeed, from the late colonial period up until the present, critics of those in power have lamented the level of venality, and numerous published reports have catalogued a wide range of iniquities and called for reform.
The British became increasingly concerned after World War II about Nigeria's readiness for independence, and used their worry about political corruption to argue that the transfer of power ought to be slowed down. In their turn, the competing Nigerian nationalists took up the debate, often with ferocity, especially in the South, where politicians frequently endeavoured to undercut the appeal of their opponents by branding them as venal. By the time that independence was achieved in 1960, many Nigerians regarded corruption as the main issue by which they and the outside world would judge the country's capacity for self rule. The soldiers who seized power in January 1966 accused the civilian regime of gross malfeasance and promised to reform the administration. Not surprisingly, subsequent civilian and military leaders have made similar charges and claims.
In the light of Nigeria's long history of coup d'etats the deep uneasiness felt about corruption before independence might seem to call for little comment. In reality, many issues troubled nationalist politicians, their supporters, and British officials. Thuggery in politics, lack of commitment to democratic ideals, ethnicity, and bureaucratic incompetence and inexperience all surfaced openly during the 1950s. Yet out of this amalgam of ills, corruption rose to subsume all other vices and became the emblematic defect of the fledgling republic. A considerable amount of bribery, nepotism, and the use of political office for personal enrichment did exist in late colonial Nigeria. Evidence of administrative malfeasance was palpable, although public awareness was not automatic. Private discussion of corruption led to public discourse, and then to its politicization. Colonial officials, troubled by the rapid pace of decolonization in Africa, and nationalist politicians, eager to embarrass their opponents and to win the favour of the British, all helped to make the matter of venality highly visible. Corruption was not simply an objective reality, standing on its own. It became a symbol and a metaphor, constructed in the midst of political competition. It drew on British colonial attitudes from an earlier period, and employed descriptions of African moral and mental failings standard in British thinking ever since the origin of the colonial era.
Most of the literature on political corruption seeks to define the term and to understand why and how it arises, what effects it has on polity and economy, and how it may eventually be brought under control.
Why is government corruption more pervasive in some societies than in others? In this article we examine public choice explanations that attribute corruption to a lack of competition in either political or economic arenas or both. The principal part of our analysis draws on recently published data about levels of corruption for a broad cross-section of countries reported for the early 1980s. We supplement this with an additional analysis of a second dataset on corruption measured during the late 1980s. Our analyses confirm that political competition affects level of corruption, but this effect is nonlinear. Corruption is typically lower in dictatorships than in countries that have partially democratized. But once past a threshold, democratic practices inhibit corruption. However, we obtained mixed results with respect to the relationship of economic competition and corruption: government size does not systematically affect corruption, but membership of the Oil Producing and Exporting Countries (OPEC) does. Finally, corruption is more pervasive in low-income countries which tend to underpay public sector employees.

It is still a surprise to me that at the dawn of the 21st Century a country that got independence over 45years now has noting to bequeath to her youths. Leaving out wealth and material acquisition not even to boast about is the case of sound political judgment. The case of the contemporary youths is that of been handicapped; not left with a sense of passion for the ideal and perception or believe of what politics is or should be. Mused by this, I am condemned to inform our vibrant youths to ask for their political birth right and social heritage.
Conscientiously, I call on youths to stop making themselves available for social vices and as instruments of political battles. If we seek power, let us seek peace. If we need wealth let us create health, do we look forward to an optimized society? Then lets imbibe ethics. It must start from your home, yes, the Home. We need no preacher to tell us we need a review of constitution! Let our laws be accommodating and accommodated! As Nigeria deals with its current political crisis, it is essential for the country’s leaders to avoid any actions that will imperil Nigeria’s last ten years of democratic progress as well as the accomplishments that have been achieved under civilian rule. Nigerians have a right to expect their civilian and military leaders to work through their country’s democratic institutions, ensuring that the good of the many triumphs over the ambitions of the few.
Thinking Positive

SELF-ESTEEM! Eh? WHAT ABOUT IT?

A while ago, we had a publication on the self titled The Man In The Mirror. This Publication is an Add-on to that previous Topic. Remember we reflected on the self-seeker who could not accept his own evaluation of himself! If you missed that issue you can read and access by clicking here .

Self-Esteem refers to a term used in psychology to reflect on a person's overall evaluation or appraisal of his or her own worth. It is also a feeling of liking oneself, a sense of self worth.
Given its long and varied history, the term has no less than three definitions.

Its root definition poses that self-esteem as a ratio of dividing one's successes in areas of life of importance to a given individual by the failures in them
OR one's "successes/pretensions."
Problems in this approach comes from making self-esteem contingent upon success: this implies inherent instability because failure can occur at any moment!

Moris Rosenberg and some social learning theorists in mid 1960s presented self-esteem in terms of a stable sense of personal worth or worthiness. Its popularity and usage undoubtly grew but still had a problem of boundary definition, making self-esteem indistinguishable from terms like narcissism or simple bragging!

Nathaniel Branden in 1969, briefly broached a 'two factor approach' of self-esteem as "...the experience of been competent to cope with basic challenges of life and being worthy of happiness."This two factor approach provides a complete and balanced definition that seems to be capable of dealing with limits of self-esteem encountered in the other hypothesises especially in terms of competence or worthiness alone.
Self-esteem is a concept of personality, for it to grow, we need to have self worth and this will be sought from embracing challenges that result in the showing of success.

Naturally every being is got self-esteem from that dirty ugly old man to the natty handsome young dude! This innate, self-esteem present in all deserves to be kept alive and aglow. This feeling does not come just like that, it is worked and earned. As little as we may have from birth gets to grow better and well when we build, guard and prune jealously. We should not be deluded because self-esteem does not result on its own, if its there its seen and easily recognised. Nathaniel Branden , opines that; self-esteem is a reputation we acquire with ourselves. This means that self-esteem is built with and within the self. Thus the logic of self-esteem as proposed by Nathaniel, asserts that self-esteem, is a basic human, i.e, it makes an essential contribution to life's processes,it is indispensable to normal and healthy self-development and has a value for survival. This in theory, practically implies that what ever your self-esteem may be has a pinch of effect on who you are or what you'll be!

Yes! That fear of failure, fright of the rich, angst of poverty, consternation on being retarded and unsuccessful, has cost you the great heights! The first mine of greatness is the self! Your self-evaluation and self-confidence matters! Forget about the stress and think of the self, forget the pains and call to mind the person! You're greater than problems if only you realise they're meant to make you stronger! Are you timid, waxing Cold??? No Grow brave, never condemn the yourself! You've tried and so what? Die? No succeed!.......No one is Better than YOU!.....To be continued....

Thinking Positive

THE VOICES IN THE WIND

We live in a society where people are too busy to listen to or observe the impressions they make on the lives of others; people do not actually have time to access their lives and as well receive feed back from people about their conduct. It was in line with this, that The Johari’s window, a cognitive psychological tool was created by Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham in 1955 in United States is used to help people better their interpersonal communication and relationships. The first window of this analogy is about the things concerning your personality known to you and others, the second consist of what people know or observe about you but hidden from you, the third which is the most mysterious in which the unconscious or subconscious bit of us is seen neither by ourselves nor others and the last which is basically what we know about ourselves but concealed from others. The focus in this write concerns the second face, which is the voices in the wind, the negative views people have about you and how you respond to them.

There are so many voices in the world today disparaging the vices or immorality initiated by technological advancement, the voices of the people decry the government’s inadequacies seen in the prevailing poverty and underdevelopment in our immediate society yet nothing seems to be done to ameliorate these situations. A leader who does not hearken to the woes of his subjects is not worth being a leader because he is in enmity with both man and God; just as we know and often hear the expression that the voice of the people is that of the Divine.

In this small community of ours, what are the voices in the wind saying about you? You are a prefect, what are the students saying about you? Are you an autocrat or a dictator? In the class, what are your classmates saying about you? At the field of play what impression do you register on people’s mind and what are they saying about you? Jesus Christ was very sensitive to the society and their reactions about him when in the gospel of St. Matthew, when he asked the apostles the thought provoking question: “who do people say I am” it was indeed another way of asking the apostles: “what are people saying about me?” ( mattew 16:1-4 ). Like the music icon MICHAEL JACKSON, Let us rise and make this community and the world at large a better place for all of us; by living with the feelings of others and being conscious of their rights to ours.
Thinking Positive

THE RIGHT ATTITUDE

According to the principle of causality, there is necessarily a connection between cause and effect. This doctrine of Aristotle suggests that the effect been experienced stems from an action. Have you ever paused to consider the effect of your action? Whether positive or negative on the world? That single action of yours on an individual goes a long way to influence and affect more than five other persons. Mother Theresa of blessed memory once remarked that: “there is hostility and chaos in the world today because love is not being shown”. There is great need for love and appreciation in the world today especially to those who are frustrated and neglected in the society; when a great deal of love is invested into the world, then there will be a world of exhilaration and tranquility.
We live in a world in which crises, oppression and violence are the order of the day; a type of which Thomas Hobbes referred to in his state of nature theory as the state of war. This to him is characterized with mutual suspicion and lawlessness, where tension and aggression rein supreme; life is short, nasty and brutish. The absence of love in what ever we do matters a lot within the unhealthy state of nature. Adolph Hitler political and military leader, worthy of mention, the 20th century most powerful dictator, became a great obstacle to many lives because he had a very bitter childhood experience, he was not shown love while growing; this single act of neglect by those around him while he grew, left the whole world mouth a gaped when he relentless fought the world, as the German army matched on in the 2nd world war. On records, it is noted that over 600million Jews were burnt alive in a gas chamber by him, not left out was his acquaintance Benito Mussolini; if actually they experience serious love from parents and those around, then they would definitely be custodians and channel of love and peace.
A parish priest who comes to the pulpit on Sunday and instead of preaching the gospel of Christ which is an embodiment of love, begins to cause a whole of congregation of about 3,000; definitely, the world will record about 3,000 people after the mass who would in turn go and infect another 3,000 either friends, family or close associates with this grown and untamed anger. Of course, 6,000 would grow more furious and hostile, devoid of love.
In our community, how do we interact with one another? Does your day begin with scolding your neighbor and housemates? Certainly whoever receives this action moves this exasperation to other friends around and so it grows, affecting all. If you are in position and command authority, how you address your subjects contribute immensely to their emotional state and their psyche either in the present or the future.
To my mother land, Nigeria, it is heart breaking to learn of the current mishap, a faked identity of the real and ideal Nigerian. We have been served with this disgusting meal of terrorism but we have not been crippled so as not to object. "Yes, we can make it" is the song. We have to stand up to re-brand the world, Nigeria and our small community; it has to start from you and me as individuals even the family, as a community is not left out. Imbibe the habit of appreciating people through a love gesture; tell your neighbor how good he or she looks. Let them know the good in them for that will certainly curb the excesses. In all, the rationale which inspired the psalmist to say; “behold how good and pleasant it is for brothers and sisters to dwell together” will glow.
Thinking Positive

NEW YEAR-----2010 WITH THINKERS

Welcome to 2010 after the fulfilling experiences in 2009, though not for all. That wraps itself about you like a shawl.
But it warms more than your body.
It warms your heart...
Fills it, too, with a melody
That will last forever.
Yes that was how the melodies brought Santa out form his abode in France to Downing street! Little kids joyously ran out to welcome Santa not for a penny but for Gifts! I could remember him in the very way he came 10 years ago then I was much younger, I could easily recognize him and how we sang all the way----- Santa is in town!
Its another season of cakes and candles, frost and cold, winter and snow! And every knock on the door gets all waiting to see Santa or his presents even the mails are filled with gifts for friends, from loved ones and vice-versa. All formal discussions now are mostly heralded by merry and wishes of white Christmas. I am not going to wish you that but sure I owe you. Remaining alive in the wake of thought, there is more to Christmas than just merry and wishes or gifts and candles. As much as the word brings us joy, we should also see that others get that joy completely devoid of sadness and sorrows. When Christmas comes we always see every reason to get new things, gifts and cards, we sometimes fail to recognize those around us who wish to be us-not envy but quest for comfort. We should extend that little hand of generosity to those in need not only those who have won our hearts by friendship. It is of no use giving to one who would not appreciate. Let Christmas make us unique in everything for Emily Mathew rightly says; From home to home, and heart to heart, from one place to another, The warmth and joy of Christmas, brings us closer to each other. Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.
The above is a little reflection of what is expected of us every Christmas and celebrations of unity and love. It is not binding but an appeal to conscience and reason. In London I know it snow falls, but that doesnt mean its whitest there! White signifies purity and divinity of which comes from the heart. I told a neighbor let your Christmas be white and he said to me let your heart then glow white! It sounded funny at first but the reason for the season were really rapped in those words! Christmas is the season for kindling the fire of hospitality in the hall, the genial flame of charity in the heart those were the words of Washington Irving. Though many faith and practices do not concur or assent to this celebration, they agree to its norms which include sharing. With the joy of others at heart, we will make this Santa season a must remember.
I place before you table a little meal of Santas present

and with this I wish you a heart glowing White! Merry Christmas!
Thinking Positive

THE MIND OF A WOMAN

Have you ever wondered what goes on in a mind of a woman? The thoughts, the actions, the dreams, the pain that every woman passes through in some point or another in her life? 90% of men would probably pay a fortune to enter in their lover’s mind and discover all her deepest secrets. Saying that men come from Mars and women come from Venus, is merely a superficial conclusion when keeping in mind all the differences and yet the similarities that exist between a man and a woman. The differences in our body structures tend to be insignificant when compared to those which exist in our state of mind and ways of reasoning things out.

The purpose of this article though is not to start comparing these differences but rather to point out some of the thoughts and aspects that play a crucial role in women’s mind. Being a man, does not necessarily mean an inexperienced writer on this subject yet to some extent I do understand the mechanics that trigger off the mind of a woman.

An important aspect that one has to keep in mind when trying to understand women is that a woman passes through many different stages in her life. She plays many different roles; she is a mother, a sister, a wife, a friend and a human per se. At times, she is in love, then she is in pain, she is lost or confused, she feels powerless, yet strong and she acts in weird ways. Yes it is true, our men are right, when they tell them that they act in weird ways at times! These weird moments tend to take over when they let emotions run deep, and hence act with their heart even though they do try best possible to use the mind.

Hormones play a crucial part in the way women think and act. Every woman spends her days having mood swings. Unfortunately hormones can play a really frustrating role in our lives! At times women are overexcited, other times they feel anxious and insecure. Their hormones do play a very important role in all of these ups and downs which they do tend to set free on their men.

What all women want in their lives though is just a sense of belonging and security. Every woman looks out for safety in her life; she wants to feel safe and independent yet she does feel the necessity to be challenged and contradicted at times too.

Another important aspect that one has to keep in mind is that every woman is different, yet all of them have some things in common. All women know what they want in their life, and all of them know how to get it in some way or another. Some might succeed, others not. Some find happiness easily; others find only pain and hurt. Some of them get humiliated, abused, raped, and mistreated, while others are loved, cared of, and wanted. A woman is capable of enduring physical pain more than a man. She got the greatest power of all; she is able of giving life. Some of them, want a career, others want a family, while several want both.

Summing up, in the mind of a woman, hundreds of thoughts might run per minute, yet one single thought might dominate her mind for years. In the mind of a woman, runs a river of words, of emotions, of sorrows, and at times a river of happiness. For all of you out there, get yourself prepared because in her mind, there is absolutely no black or white!
Thinking Positive

MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS.

Preamble:
The united nations millennium development goals, which provides the road map for human development sprung from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), an organization set up in 1961 in Paris, France with the aim of developing and upgrading human standard of living, raging from business integration among countries to expansion of employment standards. The millennium development goals were officially established in the year 2000 during a millennium summit held in New York City. The summit, which lasted three days (6 September to 8 September) was organized to discuss the role of the United Nations at the turn of the twenty-first century.
The resolution at this summit was the adoption of 8 goals termed millennium development goals (MDGS) of 18quantifiable target, measured by 48 indicators, signed by 147 heads of state and by 189 member nations. These goals are the worlds targets for dramatically reducing extreme poverty, hunger, diseases, exclusion, lack of infrastructure and shelter- while promoting gender equality, education, health and environmental sustainability. Thematically the goals are:
- Eradication of poverty and hunger
- Achieving universal basic education
- Promoting gender equality
- Reducing of child morality
- Increase maternal health
- Combating HIV/AIDS and other disease
- Environmental Sustainability
- Global Partnership for Development
These goals according to Kofi Anna former U.N secretary-general,
Were basically geared towards the development of the third world ranging from Africa, Asia to Latin America. The categorical analysis of the various goals as it applies to third world countries is of basic necessity.
Thinking Positive

THE MAN IN THE MIRROR

Thinking of his newly acquired assets, a Man once soliloquized "i've got everything i need in life, am richer now! Let her <public> tell me who i am!" The Self is a key construct in several schools of psychology, referring to the cognitive and affective representation of ones identity. The earliest formulation of the self in modern psychology from the distinction between the self as I, the subjective Knower, and the self as Me, the object that is known.

Current views of the self in psychology diverge greatly from this early conception, positioning the self as playing an integral part in the human motivation, cognition affect and social identity. Self, following from John Locke, has been seen as a product of episodic memory, but research upon those with amnesia find they have a coherent sense of self based upon preserved conceptual autobiographical knowledge.

What an abstract notion in the citation above of the 'concluded rich Man.' In his conscious he acknowledged his wealth but inadequate, he still looks for more of appellations and cognomen. In his supposed fulfillment he still could not accept his own thought or concept of his personality. At peak he lost conformity and self 'evaluationability.' His transparency lacked visibility and seasonability. Heinz Kohut initially proposed a bipolar self compromising two systems of narcissistic Perfection: 1) A system of ambitions
2) A system of ideals. Heinz Kohut called the pole of ambitions the narcissistic self. (later grandiose self ), while the pole of ideals was designated the idealized parental image. According to Kohut, this poles of the self represented natural progressions in the psychic lives of infants and toddlers- little wonder was the Man a 'Big Baby'?

In the wake of thought, the lane of ideas must grace the expectations of the mind. Thus, the mind and concept are interwoven as one would rather mean noting but useless he isolated. Kohut argued that when the child's ambitions and exhibitionistic were chronically frustrated, Arrests in the Grandiose Self, led to the preservation of a false, expansive sense of self that could manifest outwardly, in the visible grandiosity of frank narcissist or remain hidden from view unless discovered in a narcissistic therapeutic transference ( or Selfobject Transference) that would expose this primitive grandiose fantasies and striving. If you discover how talk your ideas out-grow your taste, then-if not intended-you should have more than enough satisfied a public rather a ratiocinate. If you think you're fulfilled, its not more than you think, otherwise its a feign of fulfillment. Kohut termed this form of transference a mirror transference! Which likely either gives a fake or real identity. Watch The Reflector You're Using! Civilization is way of life i.e an aspect of culture, which deals with the developments implemented and the various stages man has attained in his quest for knowledge. It was the need for protection and good living that brought about civilization through science and technology. In our world today, many persons misinterpret the idea of civilization and capitalize on their own perception forgetting its base and fundamentals. This has really lead to a fade out of culture. Also, Civilization is seen by many as modern way of life, which is better and forget the fact that culture has civilization as its aspect.
This misconceived idea of civilization points envisages 'the way of life of others is a model for the reshaping of theirs' forgetting that culture is the way of life in which one feels at home and recognized. Coping others way of life like mode of dressing, greeting manners and other culture embedded practices, makes one a slave in his/her own environ and homeless- culture is an identity peculiar to a person.
Thinking Positive

CHALLENGES OF HUNGER AND DISEASE IN THE 21ST CENTURY

Hunger is like the desire of a paralyzed person who wishes to pick a cup from a fence but without legs. Its a desire for things but that desire is not accomplished because of the minimal resources. Hunger affects man, animals and plants but we shall base our concern on man.
Disease is the resultant of pathogens dominant activities in the body, it disturbs the state of a person who is infected and causes disorder in the community where such is found.
Hunger and Disease are a very serious problem that has been very difficult to control. They lead to things that affect every aspect of human life.
One of the basic things that causes hunger, which in turn leads to diseases, is the problem of unemployment, this is caused by lack of job creation on the part of government, which has its roots on the selfish interest of the government. On our part, idleness, lack of creativity, laziness, to mention a few. These must be corrected if hunger and poverty combat must be a favourable victory. Thus, we can't ignore the adverse negative effect on our society.
Also, natural disasters and wars play a role negatively in the diseases and hunger combat. Natural Disasters to contend with, like floods, earthquakes, wars and the likes, between countries bring about this pandemics and endemics. Nuclear weapons used and unwanted vibrations lead to destruction of lives and properties, polluted land and water bodies, major in food production! How then do we wallow in this inhumane living mentality?
I always tell my fellow comrades in the pen job that if goods things were built in peace nobody will touch or try destroying them when their is disagreement. Nonetheless, disagreements must be avoided and we learn to tolerate others because every person is unique. We must put on the cloak of hardwork and say no to laziness putting on a spirit of enthusiasm towards work and changed mentality of things been possible!
For my dear third world countries, hmmm! I heave a sigh of relief. Because you efforts has left the developed countries amazed! No one thought you could come this far! In the same spirit, put more of your resources into standard investments and agro-allied investments don't neglect the fertile land of the Garden of Eden. More rehabilitation centers could mean more than a $1million to my handicapped brothers. Don't neglect the because they've got potentials too. Rather than throw away your custom and culture make it an enterprise-Israel is a country with a bunch of lessons to learn and examples to show! She got a little population but not disturb about this but rather becomes one of the greatest independent armies in the world. She only saw above her heights! Culture and Tourism are great antidotes to poverty.
Keep reading and think positive!
