Oz Onyx 64 - Release

Preface:
With the release of the Debut and Redux 64 remixes, feedback from users has been overwhelmingly encouraging, so much so that we decided to keep the journey going. Software should never remain stagnant, nor should anything in life. Complacency brings with it apathy and dependence followed by atrophy. "Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light."

Concept:
To create an operating system which would target new users to Linux or computing in general. An easy to install system which is inviting and intuitive to use, enhanced with applications that the majority of users would require on a day by day basis, which could easily be tailored to any individuals needs. In creating this project, we would provide the nucleus of this system and through consultation with the public on our forum, continue to evolve into something that will become indispensable for personal computer users world wide. During this process, we would also like to teach you how to create your own system – Give a man a fish...

Installation:
Burn the downloaded ISO 'image' to a DVD and then boot from the DVD. Alternatively if you don't have an optical drive, you can create a startup disk to USB flash drive and then boot your computer from there.

Known Issues:
Intel Video - No issues encountered. Install and enjoy
ATI Video - After install, please use kernel .38-10 or .38-11 (already provided as an option in 'Grub' boot screen). ATI are way behind regarding Kernel support
NVidia - After install, proceed to your 'Home' folder and then to 'Post Install Info'. I have included the latest drivers and instructions for you.
After driver installation, you may encounter strange 'plymouth' loading screens - same fix applies as per previous versions (how to fix ugly plymouth)
In the menus, you will see an icon for 'Google Earth' - this has been removed at the last minute due to distribution licence. The icon slipped past us.

DVD Live Session:
During the Live session, you will only be able to experience the 'Unity' environment. After install, you may choose either 'Unity' (Ubuntu) or 'Classic' dependent on your preferences.

Oz Unity 2.0 - Onyx 64 is based on Canonicals Ubuntu 11.04. This is not a long term support base. As such, please treat this system with due caution. Whilst we've tried to test on as many different units as we could there is no guarantee it will work on all. If you like this remix, then GREAT! if not, thanks for trying but please don't 'hate' - we're simply trying to 'give back' to a community that has given us so much.

Preface:
Since the introduction of Microsoft Windows, computing has become open to the masses. This in itself was a good thing as with general acceptance of computing came open information exchange and connectivity. Windows however, was designed to make money and as such was developed from a business perspective – not a social one. Linux had a similar issue, however, it had one thing in its favour – Open Source.

Open Source allowed Linux to evolve and become whatever visionaries could conceive. From a boring business server, scientific tool, educational device to a functional desktop personal computer. Anything was possible, and still is. Canonicals Ubuntu operating system has blazed the trail in creating a functional stable desktop usable by people with a moderate to high knowledge of computing – the problem here being that 85-90% of computer users fall beneath this level of computing knowledge.

Various projects have been started to address this problem, such as 'Ultimate Edition', 'Mint', 'Kubuntu', all of which are excellent and serve certain purposes. I enjoyed using each and still do, but something just didn't feel right, it just wasn't me. Users struggling with Windows and viruses and spyware etc.. were still dumbfounded and perplexed when trying to deal with a Linux operating system. There was a need for an operating system which was as easy as could be – both from an installation point of view and an ease of use point of view. Something with all the hard work done such as Codecs, Flash and Java. A healthy mix of commonly used and required applications, not a huge clump of programs causing confusion to new users. An operating system with a look and feel pleasant to a majority of new users – not just the enlightened geeks amongst us. An operating system which can easily grow and be tailored to your personal wants and requirements.

You may need to cancel this message two or three times and has no consequence on the installation. After installation, on restart, Grub may not show your other installed operating systems. Continue loading into Oz Unity. Once in Oz, press Alt-F2 and in the dialogue box, type: gksu update-grub and press enter. Enter your password when asked and that's it.
After install, you will manually need to add the additional backgrounds from usr/share/backgrounds.

DVD LiveDrive:
When you load into a Live DVD session from the DVD, you will be greeted with the Gnome Desktop. If you prefer Gnome, you can continue with your Live Session and install if you wish. If you would like to experience the OzRedux64 environment, log out and log back in as user: 'custom' and change your session tab at the bottom of the screen to OzRedux64 - then simply press enter for the password. Ultimate Edition 2.9 released

What is Ultimate Edition 2.9? Ultimate Edition 2.9 was built off Ultimate Edition 2.8 which is built off Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat. All updates fully updated / upgraded old kernels purged, new initrd and vmlinuz rebuilt. Ultimate Edition 2.9 as with all odd release numbers was built with KDE users in mind. Ultimate Edition 2.9 has KDE, Gnome, Openbox and XFCE environments user selectable at login. A crisp new theme (121 to choose from) & tons of new software. LXDE was broken at time of build on the 32 bit side, so it did not make the cut I am sorry.

I also want to apologize for the delay of the release, my girlfriend of 11 years has been battling cancer & I do not spend anywhere close to the time I used to spend writing software etc. I know to many of you this is a major release and I should take time to explain in vivid detail what this is. I must once again apologize time has not & currently is not on my side. Please take it as what Ultimate Edition has always been, those that run it understand what I mean. Hopefully the statement a picture says a 1,000 words will pick up where I left off.

What is Ultimate Edition 2.8? Ultimate Edition was built off Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat. All updates fully updated / upgraded. The software you have came to love with previous editions of Ultimate Edition have been also pre-installed along with 12 new ones. I must apologise at time of build Cinelerra & wine doors were currently broken and did not make the cut.

I also want to apologise for the delay and at the same time thank my admin for the delay of Ultimate Edition 2.8′s release. Many issues have been squashed in 2.8 because of the delay. I do want to give a shout out to JohnnyG. Many were cosmetic, he has a real eye for detail and breaking things down to a programmers level. Thanks again JohnnyG. Cowboy’s handiwork at the theme has won the poll and will be deemed “Cowboy Blue”. This is not the end of the thanks that need to be dropped simply the tip of the iceberg. I would be chatter boxing all day to give the kudos where they lie. No, I do not do everything. Don’t like the blue theme? There are 107 themes to choose from, it does not have to be dark.

I just installed the server kernel.

: sudo apt-get install linux-headers-server linux-image-server linux-server

Then rebooted>Start up manager>selected 2.6.32-22-server>rebooted......using Compiz ! No errors at all ! & 195.36.24 driver.

Karmic based Ultimate Edition (2.4 & 2.5) already has them all from 0.0.7, I striped the usplashes since Lucid does not use USplash. Our admin and beta testers have had their paws on it since Feb 13th as an alpha. Beta was dropped Mar 21st. I thought I would share a few finer points of what is coming. I will not give a deadline on when I am going to release it, just know it is coming.

Fast, Fast, Fast is the first thing I noticed. I do have a fairly fast comp, but my my does it boot fast & I do not have a solid state drive yet. Boots so fast I can not get my comp to record the xsplash coming up. The Alpha had issues random crashes etc. As to be expected with an alpha release. What I am running now, crash free thus far.

A few changes I have made in the O/S and will stay the min / max buttons are where I feel they should be top right side. Lucid will be on the left side. I have added a search engine to firefox (not the default - google is the default) called swagbucks. I have a buddy (same guy that will be building the PS3 version of Ultimate Edition) that uses this search engine and has gotten things for free, by just using it as his default search engine. I think why not allow you ladies and gents the opportunity to get stuff for free doing what you already do. The results are provided from google anyways.

The theme? Was written by many...

Gtk, I have pretty much re-wrote / designed (had to move the buttons where they belong for one
Compiz splash via Cowboy based on his logo.
4 plymouth splashes 3 from JohnnyG and one by me (based on Cowboys handywork), won't be long and you fellas will be seeing a Plymouth Maker from me.
Icon set robbed from the Lava Theme Didn't I have something to do with the creation of them?
Usplash created (those using Ultimate Edition 2.5 or less) by TUM using Cowboys artwork.

Ultimate Edition Central is temporarily offline - Yep it happens to the best of us.
During this time, Ultimate Edition Oz has fielded a number of queries asking what was happening...Are they gone? Is Ultimate Edition finished?
Users fears were allayed thanks to additional communications channels. We have to stay on-lin...e - no matter what.
Keep in mind that we no longer "have all our eggs in the one basket". If any of the below 'outlets' should be temporarily affected please feel free to log in to another site and let the System Administrators know (if they don't already) and stay informed with regular situation updates as they become available. Don't be left in the dark again.

I do have a x86 on my hard disk I built some time ago, just not sure I want to spend anther 10 hrs upping it. It is only a alpha. That being said expect problems.

Known issues
As is to be expected at this stage of the release process, there are several known bugs that users are likely to run into with Lucid Alpha 2. We have documented them here for your convenience along with any known workarounds, so that you don't need to spend time reporting these bugs again:

*

The wacom-tools driver cannot be used with Lucid Alpha 2. It is no longer supported for xserver 1.7, and also requires HAL for configuration which is no longer available. A new driver xf86-input-wacom is under development upstream but was not yet available in time for this milestone release. This is expected to be resolved for the final release of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
* The Kubuntu alpha 2 desktop ISOs are too large to fit on a CD. They can be burned to a DVD or USB stick, or you can install using the alternate ISOs.
*

The notify-osd notification system has "debug mode" turned on to help people find erroneously urgent notifications. The bubbles appear like so. This is the expected behavior at this point in the development cycle.
* Ubuntu Netbook Edition and other derivatives using gdm don't handle the default session gracefully (Bug#507121). After the first reboot on installation you can either:
o log out from your session, choose "Ubuntu Netbook Edition" (or other) on gdm and then log in again, or
o

run sudo /usr/lib/gdm/gdm-set-default-session --keep-old une (substituting xubuntu or mythbuntu for une as appropriate)
*

On video hardware that supports KMS, the live CD sometimes does not reboot successfully, instead displaying the boot logo indefinitely. To work around this, you will need to power down the system manually. Investigation of this issue is ongoing. As a workaround, users can boot from a USB stick instead of from a CD. (506418)
*

On video hardware that does not support KMS, using the "full disk with encryption" installation option will result in a boot failure because the prompt for the passphrase needed for decrypting the disk will not be shown. As a workaround for this issue, users should boot without the splash option. (506717)
*

When running on Ubuntu Server, the plymouth boot splash screen does not exit after the system is booted. To get to a console login after boot, you must press Ctrl-Alt-F1 to switch to VT1. Work on correcting this for the 10.04 release is ongoing. (506297)
*

Manual partitioning fails in the graphical installer due to a bug in ubiquity: you can select existing partitions to use as targets for installation, but you can neither create new partitions nor delete existing partitions. As a workaround, users can install using the alternate CDs. This issue will be resolved for Alpha 3. (506585, 507012)
* Jockey (Ubuntu's restricted driver manager) doesn't yet support the new alternatives system used by the nvidia driver packages, so in order to install nvidia drivers you will have to install them from the command line:
o

sudo apt-get install nvidia-current (or nvidia-173 or nvidia-96)
o select the alternative that matches the driver that you have installed
+

(e.g. /usr/lib/nvidia-current/ld.so.conf for nvidia-current):

sudo update-alternatives --config gl_conf
o update the ld cache:
+

sudo ldconfig
o then configure your xorg.conf with:
+

sudo nvidia-xconfig
o And restart your computer.
* Because of the new alternatives system, the nvidia installer from NVIDIA's website currently doesn't work.
*

The fglrx binary driver for ATI video chipsets does not yet support the X server in Lucid. As a workaround, users should use the open source -ati driver instead. (506656)
*

Attempting to run 32bit applications which make use of 3D acceleration in a 64bit system will result in a failure. See (506435) and (506437). This is expected to be resolved for Alpha 3.
*

Alpha 2 does not include Wubi, the Ubuntu installer for Windows. It will be included going forward from Alpha 3. (498453)
*

LTSP can't be installed from Edubuntu's the text installer. If you want a LTSP setup, please use Ubuntu Alternate and then add the required Edubuntu packages using the Ubuntu Software Center. This is caused by the ongoing effort to drop the text installer off the Edubuntu DVD and move LTSP in the live environment. (507663)
