Taylor Swift Makes 14 'Confessions'

2010-11-01T06:52:00.000-07:00

Big Machine Records It's a few weeks before the release of her third studio album, 'Speak Now,' and Taylor Swift has a sparkle in her eye like a kid waiting for Christmas. The Boot sat down with the 20-year-old superstar at Nashville's Starstruck Studios to talk about what was then a top-secret project, with only one of its songs, 'Mine,' revealed to salivating fans around the world. And Taylor was all but jumping out of her seat at the anticipation of giving those fans the remaining 13 tracks on her entirely self-penned project.

"These songs are confessions," Taylor told The Boot, "and every single confession on this album is sort of like that moment when you stand up at a wedding and say, 'Wait!' And whether it's saying, 'Wait, I'm sorry,' or 'Wait, what you said really hurt me,' ... or 'Wait, I secretly love you,' you're making confessions and you're speaking now. The moment will slip by if you don't say anything."

Looking lovely in a light gray sweater and black shorts, Taylor sat with one leg crossed underneath her on a big comfy chair under the bright lights of the studio, as we talked to her about new topics she tackles on this album, along with her signature theme of love. Just a few minutes into our chat and the cameras seemed invisible, as the notoriously affable songbird made us feel like we were just talking to an old friend in her living room.

Pakistan's legendary singer Noor Jehan

2010-07-27T07:04:00.000-07:00

From the late-60s to mid-70s, Pakistan had its own film and music industry that was as vibrant, open-minded and odd as anything in the west. Imbued with Sufi ideas of love, tolerance and dogma-free faith, Pakistani pop was an explosion of colour contrasting with the country's image today as a hotbed of fundamentalist intolerance.

After a violent conflict with India in 1965 Indian movies were banned in Pakistan. This galvanized the country's ailing film industry, creating stars (Waheed Murad - the Elvis Presley of Karachi) and giving birth to a native pop music. At the scene's heart were a composer and his muse: M Ashraf and Nahid Akhtar. Incredibly prolific - Ashraf made over 400 soundtracks - and working on a shoestring, the duo threw anything in, from space-age bleeps to surf guitar to hip English slang.

The music reflected the freedom of Pakistani culture. Nahid Akhtar sings the title tune of a celebrated Urdu film called Society Girl, in which a guitar-playing hippy beauty drifts into prostitution. "This was a landmark film," says Akhtar now. "It dealt with issues that are very much a part of our society, but mostly thought too bold to discuss in the course of normal conversation."

One of the great stars of Pakistani pop culture was Noor Jehan. A famous actress in pre-Partition India, she settled in Karachi in 1947 and became The Queen Of Melody. "Lesser mortals would exit the recording premises when Madam would arrive," remembers Iqbal Asif, an EMI engineer who worked on hundreds of Pakistani film soundtracks. "I remember after the recording of one track she listened to the final mix, got up, patted my head, and offered me a crisp 100 rupee note. Times were good then."

The good times were not to last. The Pakistani liberation war of 1971 led to a drain of talent after the founding of Bangladesh. Then the rise of piracy decimated the film and music industries. And in 1977 general Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq staged a coup and advanced the Islamisation of Pakistan. The fun was over.

With the closure of EMI Pakistan's vaults in the early-80s all of this music would have been buried had it not been for two vinyl obsessives: Andy Votel, a DJ whose Finders Keepers label specialises in reissuing psychedelic music, and Chris Menist, a UN envoy based in Pakistan. Votel discovered a Pakistani pop 45 in a charity shop and, intrigued by its raw sound and alternate verses in Urdu, Panjabi and English, delved deeper. Menist tracked down the original recordings, which were all owned by one man in Lahore; EMI had sold the entire legacy of Pakistani pop as a job lot.

The result is The Sound Of Wonder, a time capsule capturing Pakistan's rich artistic legacy. The title track contains a lyric straight from Sufism: "Live and let live/Love and give love". Against all odds, the sound of wonder lives on

Shakira and Freshlyground sing Official FIFA World Cup

2010-07-11T15:33:00.000-07:00

Others

FIFA and Sony have chosen Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) as the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ in South Africa. The song was written by Shakira, the world-famous singer from Latin America, who will perform with South African band Freshlyground.

Once again, the announcement of the official FIFA World Cup™ song was keenly awaited. Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) is the name of the new football anthem, and with its rhythmical African sounds, the song represents the vitality and energy of the host continent. South African guitars back up the Afro-Colombian rhythm and Soca beat. The chorus is similar to that of a popular Cameroon song made famous by Golden Voices in particular.

FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter is delighted with the new FIFA World Cup Song: “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) represents what we football fans can expect in South Africa: liveliness, power and dynamism. It represents the four-week festival of football we are about to witness in South Africa. Nothing represents the joy of football better than music, especially when it is a song so full of energy and dynamism like Waka Waka.”

Shakira will perform the song with the famous South African band Freshlyground. “I am honoured that Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) has been chosen to be part of the excitement and the legacy of the 2010 FIFA World Cup,” said Shakira. “The FIFA World Cup is a miracle of global excitement, connecting every country, race, religion and condition around a single passion. It represents an event that has the power to unite and integrate, and that’s what this song is about.”

“We are thrilled to have collaborated with Shakira on Waka Waka (This Time For Africa), especially as we feel that the song captures the spirit and energy of the African FIFA World Cup,” said Zolani Mahola of Freshlyground. “We are certain that the song will inspire people around the world to celebrate the gathering of nations at the place where it all started. Here in Africa!”

All proceeds from the single as well as from the “Listen Up: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup™ Album” will be donated to the 20 Centres for 2010 campaign. The aim of the official campaign of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ is to achieve positive social change through football by building 20 Football for Hope Centres in Africa to offer education and healthcare services as well as football training.

FIFA and Sony Music have enjoyed a successful partnership in the official music programme ever since 1994. The tradition of an official song dates back to the 1966 FIFA World Cup™ in England with a song for the first Official Mascot, “World Cup Willie”, who was a lion. Ever since, the official music programme and the Official Mascot have become a more and more significant component of the event, providing an excellent opportunity for more than just football fans to identify with the world’s biggest single-sport event.

Official songs at recent FIFA World Cup™ competitions have included Un’estate italiana by Edoardo Bennato and Gianna Nannini in 1990, Gloryland by Daryl Hall with Sounds of Blackness in 1994, and La Copa de la Vida by Ricky Martin in 1998. In 2002, the official song was Boom by Anastacia, while Vangelis’ vocal official anthem featured typical Korean and Japanese sonic elements. In 2006, The Time of Our Lives by the Il Divo quartet was a resounding success.

Alabama statue dedication a shining event

2010-06-09T04:21:00.000-07:00

Immortalized recently by the Country Music Hall of Fame, supergroup Alabama now stands forever in its hometown.
In one of the most unique and touching ceremonies in recent years in Fort Payne, Randy Owen, Teddy Gentry, Jeff Cook and Mark Herndon all spoke and were all touched when four bronze statues were unveiled at Fort Payne City Park.
The honor, which was long overdue for the group that helped make Fort Payne famous and still calls Lookout Mountain home, brought together public officials, DeKalb County citizens and people from around the country. More than 1,500 attended the event.
We want to thank Fort Payne Mayor Bill Jordan, Fort Payne City Council President Johnny Eberthart and Fort Payne councilmen Walter Watson, Richard Pridmore and Andrew Hairston for conceiving the plan and pushing it forward. Certainly, it’s not easy task to develop such a tribute, and the council overcome obstacle after obstacle with steady progress.
The statues and display serve as a wonderful centerpiece for the newly remodeled City Park, which has added so much beauty and so much more pride to our city.
But, there are others who deserve great credit for Saturday’s wonderful ceremony.
The Fort Payne Parks and Recreation Department, headed by Greg Conkle, did another outstanding job. From helping to get everything prepared for the event to serving hundreds of hot dogs and soft drinks in the park after the dedication, the department showed the best of what government can do.
Also, the Fort Payne Street Department, led by Stanley Byrd, have worked tirelessly during the renovations of the park and should be nothing but proud of their efforts. We certainly are.
The Fort Payne Police Department and many others were also on hand to keep things moving smoothly. Their efforts allowed those there to honor the boys in the band to leisurely enjoy the day and soak in the ceremony.
Saturday was another great day for the group Alabama, and an even better one for our city. It was a day well done.

Robin Fink Career and Profile

2010-06-06T01:45:00.000-07:00

Profile :

Robin Finck was born on November 7, 1971, he is an American guitarist, currently the lead guitarist for Nine Inch Nails and former lead guitarist of Guns N' Roses. In April 2008, it was announced via nin.com that Finck would be rejoining Nine Inch Nails. Finck is one of only a few artists who has played in two different bands listed on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock", Nine Inch Nails.

Career :
Finck grew up in Marietta, Georgia and like some young teenagers played with several unsigned bands; in his case, primarily in the Atlanta area, with acts such as Prowess, Bat Your Lashes, and Sik Dik (bandmates of which included Steve "Holiday" Childress and Michael Allen, currently of The Goodies and Greg Thum), and Impotent Sea Snakes.

He joined Nine Inch Nails as part of their touring band in 1994-95 for their Self-Destruct and Further Down the Spiral tours. Finck appeared with Nine Inch Nails at Woodstock '94, and saw his first official release with them, the Closure video, released in 1997. Once the tour was completed, he took a job playing for the circus troupe Cirque du Soleil in the original tour of Quidam. In 1997, he was recruited by Guns N' Roses to replace Slash, who had just quit the band at the end of the previous year, and worked on their recently released album Chinese Democracy, signing a two-year contract. When the two years were up, the album had not been completed, however, one single was released; Oh My God, featured on the End of Days Soundtrack.

Finck rejoined Nine Inch Nails as the band embarked on their Fragility v1.0 and Fragility v2.0 tours. These tours saw the release of another live album/DVD, And All That Could Have Been, Finck's second release with them.

Shortly after the tour ended in late 2000, he returned to Guns N' Roses and toured with them in Brazil, Asia, Europe and North America during 2001-2002.
In the summer of 2006, Guns N' Roses toured Europe playing in front of over 700,000 people.[5] They finished up by touring North America for the remainder of the year. The following year, Guns N' Roses toured in Mexico, Australia and Japan.

On April 4th 2008, it was announced at nin.com that Finck would be rejoining Nine Inch Nails, most likely for touring purposes, and possibly for future records. Finck played most if not all guitars on the Nine Inch Nails album The Slip

When Guns N' Roses' long awaited album Chinese Democracy was released in November 2008, GNR were unable to announce future plans as Finck was touring with NIN at the time. Finck has co-writing credits on "Better" which was later released as a single. Finck also played on every track and has 6 Guitar solos on the album.

Robin Finck mainly uses Gibson Les Paul guitars with variations in woods and pickups between them, and has also started playing a Jerry Jones Baritone and a Fender Jazzmaster guitar, in addition to the Les Pauls since re-joining Nine Inch Nails. He also uses his wah pedal to get unusual sounds for solos, and has been known to shove the body of the guitar up against the speakers of his amplifiers for even more unusual sounds. In Nine Inch Nails, he also plays lap steel guitar with effects pedals mounted to the body (for further sound manipulation purposes) for the songs off of Year Zero (album) with a pick or e-bow, and can play ukulele and mandolin, as revealed on the Lights in the Sky tour. Finck has also been known to collaborate with the rest of Nine Inch Nails to change certain parts and arrangements of the songs for the live performance aspect. Live performances of songs such as "The Wretched" and "In This Twilight" feature this influence, with parts and arrangements often being drastically changed.

Personal Quotes

"A life lived unexplored is a life not worth living."

"We were very, very frightened. I had to sit down and take stock of my life and see if I had a life outside the band, because I was questioning if there was even a future for Metallica. That was a scary thought; when you've been in a band for as long as we have, you take for granted that it's always going to be there." Galen grew up in Lubbock, TX - the home of Buddy Holly. He started playing guitar when he was 11 or 12 and played in working cover bands ever since high school. After a couple of semesters of recording classes at college, he landed a gig with a local sound company and has been on the road ever since... mostly taking care of band gear and teching guitars. He's worked for Nashville acts for the most part: Vince Gill, Reba McEntire, Clint Black, but has fallen in with the speedy guitar player set over the last few years, working for Joe, Steve Vai, and Dream Theater, as well as looking after Joe's G3 tours. In 2000, he started production managing on the Engines of Creation tour and when Joe called to see if he was available for the Strange Beautiful Music tour, he asked if he'd mind also playing some rhythm guitar on some songs in the show.

1. Death Dealer

Now the demon is here again
Vengeance is burning in my soul
I am a soldier
In the legion of forever
Ride on the storm
And never surrender
To death or glory
Keep on marching
On hallowed ground
Until death or be victorious
Death dealer is on the hunt
On the hunt
I can't believe that this is true
This demon really loves the pain
I am a soldier
In the legion of forever
Ride on the storm
And never surrender
To death or glory
Keep on marching
On hallowed ground
Until death or be victorious
Death dealer is on the hunt
On the hunt
He is the bringer of the pain
Jesus Christ
Not again
I am a soldier
In the legion of forever
Ride on the storm
And never surrender
To death or glory
Keep on marching
On hallowed ground
Until death or be victorious
Death dealer is on the hunt
On the hunt

2. Damnation Game

Damnation Game
Damnation Game
Now I won my freedom
But I had to pay the price
I keep on searching
But I never seem to find what I need
It's all just like a dream
The European I had to fight
I had no choice but it made me wiser
And now I won't fall into the night
Now you must roll the dice
Roll the dice
And meet your own demise
The European always lies
Always lies

Nobody wins
In this damnation game
No body wins
In this damnation game
I draw the card
It's the ace of spades
I always play for keeps
And I'll never ever fade away
It's the devil to pay
Patience is a virtue
But now it's wearing thin
You play the game
But you will never ever win
Your living a sin
Now you must roll the dice
Roll the dice
And meet your own demise
The European always lies
Always lies
Nobody wins
In this damnation game
Nobody wins
In this damnation game
Nobody wins
In this damnation game
Nobody wins
In this damnation game

3. Live To Fight (Another Day)

I live by the sword
and never surrender
Die by the sword
and I don't give in
Now I must rise
and take the journey

Blood, sweat and tears
is what you will find
All these wasted years
in immortal sin
Angels of death
will always follow you

I must live to fight another day
I will see the light again
Now you must learn
how to burn

For eternity relentlessly
Oh, no!
The battle cries
or getting louder
Now it's time for you
to face the truth
There is no higher ground
For you to run to

Must sacrifice
Now it's all or nothing
You must lift the curse
Haunting you
Forever lost
but never found

I must live to fight another day
I will see the light again
Now you must learn
how to burn
For eternity relentlessly
Oh, no!

4. Red Devil

Burning down the avenue
Carburetor's breathing
Feel the torque push on through
Hear the tires screaming
Pedal to the metal
Drop the clutch and run
Now the tires are burning
And the racing has begun
Hear the engine roar
In this mean machine
Times standing still
And My red devil is flying
Catch me if you can
Full speed ahead
In this read brutal beauty
Four hundred horses running wild
Sayonara see you later
Now you disappear
In my rear view mirror as I am changing gear
Screaming down the boulevard
You will eat my dust
This fire breathing beauty
I will always trust
Hear the engine roar
In this mean machine
Times standing still
And My red devil is flying
Catch me if you can
Times standing still
And My red devil is flying
Catch me if you can

5. The Four Horsemen (Of The Apocalypse)

The fallen angel show the signs
He is no stranger in your eyes
He is immortal,
He is forever
From the portal his demons shall dance
Under burning skies now the four
Horsemen ride along the shore
Across the sea the beast shall rise
You will be sacrificed
Revelation tells the end of days
The never ending masquerade,
All pretending in death's charade
Under burning skies now
The four horsemen ride along the shore
Across the sea the beast shall rise
You will be sacrificed

6. Priest Of The Unholy

Born out of fire
evil rising
Now we must pay the price
And sacrifice
It's no grand elution
this demon dance
Eternally black
now there's no turning back

Lift the veil of mystery
and this masquerade
Lay your weapons down
surrender now or die
Die!

Priest of the unholy
Priest of the unholy
Burning with vengeance
Burning forever
There is no mercy to give
No time to live
The final curtain
Comes down at last
Repent all your sins
All of your sins

Lift the veil of mystery
and this masquerade
Lay your weapons down
surrender now or die
Die!

Priest of the unholy
Priest of the unholy
Into the darkness
Your soul must fall
Your gamble has failed
Gamble has failed
At the mountains of madness
There will be no mercy
We must pay the price
And sacrifice
Lift the veil of mystery
and this masquerade
Lay your weapons down
surrender now or die
Die!

Priest of the unholy
Priest of the unholy

7. Be Careful What You Wish For

Your walking the tight rope
With no one to hold you when you fall
Hold on to what you got
Or you'll end up losing it all

Be careful what you wish for, my friend
You might find what you fear
listen to the whispers in your ear

Your wicked ways
Your wicked ways
Your keep on pushing
But know your pushing too far
The demon will find you
No matter who you are

Be careful what you wish for, my friend
You might find what you fear
listen to the whispers in your ear

With friends just like this
I sure don't need any enemies
Be careful what you wish for, my friend
You might find what you fear
listen to the whispers in your ear
Your wicked ways
Your wicked ways
A cheat never wins and a winners
never cheat
Be careful what you wish for, my friend
You might find what you fear
listen to the whispers in your ear
Your wicked ways
Your wicked ways

9. Lament

[Instrumental]

10. Magic City

Well it seemed to me
That the place to be
Was far away
From the dark and the cold

So I sailed away
Into the sun
across the blue sea
Magic city is my home
Where I wanna be
Forever more

Well I had to go away
I just couldn't stay
Where the cold winds blow
And I'm surrounded by ice and snow
So I sailed away
Into the sun
Across the blue sea

Magic city is my home
Where I wanna be
Forever more
Magic city is my home
Where I wanna be
Forever more

11. The Eleventh Hour

Read the signs
Upon the horizon
Your turning blind
No one can see
We're hypnotized
Seems like forever
To realize what this must be

Now eons have passed
Since the dawn of time
When our lord turned water into wine

It must be done
In the eleventh hour
To be undone
There is no time
It slips away like an illusion
Forever lost
Gone forever

Now eons have passed
Since the dawn of time
When our lord turned water into wine

No be trend just like a stranger
I lost the way in this strange land
We're hypnotized
Seems like forever
To realize what this must be

Now eons have passed
Since the dawn of time
When our lord turned water into wine

12. Heavy Heart

[Instrumental]

13. Tied Of Desire

There is no shifting
My will of steel
Just like a freight train
Pushing on through
There is no stopping
The tied of desire
Just like a fever
Perpetual fire

No stone unturned
The flame is still burning
In my quest
I will never rest

There is no wall high enough
Fr me to scale
No pit deep enough
I cannot fail
To slow down my charge
I am on fire
No distance to far
I'll touch the stars

No stone unturned
The flame is till burning
In my quest
I will never rest

Fight for your life
There is no more crying
The darkness must fall
Into the night

No stone unturned
The flame is still burning
In my quest
I will never rest

Markus Grosskopf Bassist of Helloween

2010-04-09T06:19:00.000-07:00

Markus was born in Hamburg, Germany on the 21st of September 1965. At the age of 15 he spent a couple of weeks in a holyday camp, where he met two blokes that played guitar and drums in a punk rock group. Soon they became close friends and hung together all the time. As they needed a bass player in their band, Markus was offered the gig. So little Markus didn’t hesitate and agreed: “I can play the bass to save my live amigo”. He found himself playing bass in his first band.

They brought their gear (which wasn't much at the time) to the camp and started making noise. They covered songs from the The Sex Pistols, The Ramones, Sid Vicious, XTC, The Sranglers and others. Some time later, when their musical skills turned out to be a little better, they were offered their first gig at the holyday camp. But after 2 years of practicing and no further offers and appearances, Markus decided to leave the band to explore new horizons.

By that time his heart began to beat more for rock’n roll bands like AC/DC, Kiss, Ted Nugent, and Iron Maiden. His new aim now was to find a band playing hard rock or metal with an option and ability for more live performances. Markus was talking to a guy who knew Kai Hansen, who was looking for a bass player for his band Second Hell at the time. Soon he was invited to audition and guess what ? Yes, he got the job! Also members of Second Hell were Piet Sielk and Ingo Schwichtenberg.

With this line up they did a few club gigs on the Hamburg circuit. Piet left the band and after several name changes, they mutually split up. Once again it was time for Markus to pack his bags and watch out for another gig to climb higher in his career.

When he finished school he started an apprenticeship at a butcher. That was definitely a very good reason to find a band with future plans immediately. Joining the band Blast Furnace, Markus met the brilliant guitar player Michael Weikath, who formed along with Kai Hansen a new line up with former members of Michael’s old act Powerfool. But shortly after that, they replaced their rhythm section, by calling in Ingo and Markus.

This completed the first Helloween line up!

It seemed like a very strong team, ‘cause it lasted longer than a couple of weeks! They had two very creative guitar players and songwriters and a wild, hungry and steaming rhythm section in the band.

From now on the dice started to roll for Helloween. Their first studio recording was published by Noise records on the legendary death metal sampler in 1983, followed by the even more legendary 5 track EP called “Helloween” and of course the LP ”Walls of Jericho”.

The following two master pieces “Keeper of the seven keys Part 1 and 2” with high pitch singer Michael Kiske, they lighted a new fire and gave Heavy Metal a new identity! They climbed the charts and reached gold in Germany and Asia.

Since then Markus recorded the bass on all the albums and toured around the globe with Helloween. For almost 20 years now, you can call him one of the grand members of Helloween.

Markus recorded his first solo album named Shockmachine create link on site in 1998. He also played bass on Ken Hensleys and John Lawtons (Uriah Heep) new arranged orchestral version of “Salisbury”, which was performed live at the “Hamburg Markthalle” and was released on video in 2001.

You also can hear his bass playing on Edguy singer Tobias Sammets album “Avantasia” Part 1 & 2. His latest activity besides Helloween is the band Kickhunter, on which he played the bass and produced their first album “Hearts and Bones” in 2002 and “Little Monsters” which was released in 2007.

The new side project of Markus called “Bassinvaders - Hellbassbeaters” was released Friday, 25th of January 2008. You'll find information on MySpace Markus Grosskopf or on www.frontiers.it.
