All the earthy fill of down south with the grit of modern sophistication and current events to boot. This record wowed me when it was released and every year that ticks by brings me closer to appreciation of what it is. Still holding true on every lyrical theme it holds, each track has a raw sludge blend that gives a listener what they need. Some tracks even have a few outside of the country sounds blended in. This record winds up deliver a very consistent spelling of what HOF is, and a retelling of what it has done over the years.

Baroness - Yellow & Green Review:

Even though it's older now, Yellow & Green by Baroness was the seminal record that cemented their place in Prog/sludge annals of history. This record is a great example of those two genres and extends a vibrant view of a few subgenres in-between, namely indie rock. The lead singles "Take My Bones Away" and "March To The Sea" are phenomenal tracks to start with. It is a double album and the album they released coming back from that bus accident in Europe that saw two members leave due to trauma (rip Allen Blickle). That said the lyrical content of this record is pretty evidently covering drug use and some seedy human traits we may very well all suffer with. The progressive instrumentation on the first slab (yellow) is definitely unmistakable. Lots of buzz on the closer of yellow "Eula" which i think is apt. Though "Twinkler" is the age tested track and bonified genius midas touch of the yellow side, the double album, and possibly their career. Arguably of course.

Green disc is backed by heavyweights "Foolsong", "Collapse", & "Stretchmarker". With "Stretchmarker" easily being a follow-up to "Twinkler" as a singular entity and an instrumental, at that. There are plenty of heavy tracks on Green disc to blow you away, "The Line Between" being a natural lead out to "Stretchmarker" with crazy tinges of indie rock smashed in between the two records. I think this is my favorite offering from all of their records as it sees new input change a little and tweak a little of their signature sound. This double LP is also a great example of these subgenres and their work in general.

Buy

Love and Rockets! - Earth, Sun, Moon Review:

A little psychedelic, a little "goth", and a little Bauhaus. This is the third offering from Love and Rockets back in September of 1987. If you like bauhaus and alternative rock from the 80s and haven't heard this, it's probably for you. They do get a little more psychadelic/college alternative on this outing than any of the Bauhaus stuff ever got. More folk and indie on this 3rd offering than the other two before it. I think the single was "No Light" followed by flute heavy "No New Tale to Tell" which proceeded "Waiting For The Flood" & "Mirror People". These tracks are pretty radio friendly alt/college singles. Mostly different from their previous band but very similar to the record that came after this one. Most of the middle of this record sounds like it's influenced by peers of the day and The Beatles. So if you dig those, you'll probably dig this. The sax flavored track "Waiting For The Flood" & "Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven" are my personal favorites. There was a pretty good remaster/remix box set in 2013 entitled "5 Albums" that is pretty good, too. The best Love And Rockets album by far stands the test of time as alt gods with goth and psych tinged madness in these 13 tracks. This is not only peak 80's but peak LAR. Make yourself happy and get some vinyl.

Buy

SuicideSilence - Graceless Review:

If you've never heard of deathcore or are a fan of the genre this single is probably for you, either way. The instrumentation of blasts and ethereal accents are there as usual. Lyrically the b side "Make Your Exit" is a little bit "brocore" inspired, after coming off of European tours with Sluaghter To Prevail I suspect. But, don't let that deter you from their restated beginning which may be the attempt in this outing. "Graceless" is a bit more of what fans may be used to if they know their Suicide Silence history. Again the instrumentation is like the good old days before the death of Mitch Luker, back in time to MySpace maybe. This could be a good sign of things to come for their 20th and for new fans just getting in to "The Big Four" of Deathcore. Perhaps the rest of what is coming can blow the lid off of the scene like the original line up did all of those years ago. Hunter Young and Austin Coupe produced this effort and it shows, as it smacks of the beginning of their career. In the end, this single seems a lot like a newer step forward with the past staying relevant and on equal footing, which is what one wants in music today. Included is a pre-order link to the new record which should be smashing conception in November, and the track I like the best... the b-side.

Buy

Concrete Blonde - Bloodletting Review:

If you don't know who this band is because you're younger, or not into post-punk or goth Rock, let this record be your introduction. I think this album was their biggest financially successful record, and spawned their most heard single maybe. They were pretty big in Australia and some alternative or college crowds here in the states. If people were alive in '90 and didn't know who they were they missed out greatly. "Bloodletting (the vampire song)" is the best track on this record. I like "Joey" as well I just think that opener is the one for the history books. "Caroline" is pretty rad and memorable in an early 90's rock feel, but "Bloodletting" is the track that sold me on Concrete Blonde. The Gothic rock tendencies continue throughout the album with alternative radio charitable songs intermingled. "Days And Days", "Darkening Of The Light", & "The Beast" mix the best with goth styled rock. "Lullaby", "Joey", & "Tomorrow, Wendy" are definitely the more radio friendly tracks of the album. The 20th anniversary edition of this record is pretty cool, also. It has the B-side to "Joey" titled "I Want You" and a very 90'sstyled version of "Little Wing" by Jimi Hemdrix as well as numerous live tracks. There might even be some of these bloodsplatter regular editions left for 30 bucks, if you dig the included video.

Buy

A Night In Texas - The Darkest Side Of Humanity: Review

If you're new to symphonic/blackened deathcore, this album might be the one to start with. If you liked Digital Apocalypse, this album will be that albums progression. Polished in the studio by Christian Donaldson, this album is fairly brutal and sonically jarring in a good way. Sam Cameron changes up some lyrical variety that aren't internet cringe cliches. With blastbeat speed runs, chugging open chords, and symphonic pops and breakdowns that enhance each track, this might be the best endeavor they've released. A Night In Texas check all of the boxes that deathcore fans want in my opinion. It's like magic to my ears, anyway. Like stated before it enhances the appeal I found on Digital Apocalypse, and takes a step further into a few genres with instrumentation and lyrical effect. Thankfully the band doesn’t keep things at high speedthe entire album they break down to more mid-tempo grooves that hit as hard as they can.

The Darkest Side Of Humanity is rounded up for the genre, and exceeds the niche of most of the bands in this category. They spent 15 years doing deathcore and I think this is a higher end step in the proper direction. Below is a video track of an example of that next step and notch they've now checked off. Lots of people on the internet detract from this band, as fans of the genre. To each their own and all, I don't understand it. I would find it hard to believe that you'd like metal and not know who they are by now with Dio and AIC covers having been out for so long now. If you like Mercyful Fate or Sleep you probably like Khemmis. The blast beats, the doom riffs, the vocals, the lyrics... all worthy of putting their records in your collections. Their newest slab is a self titled sonic death ride to oblivion. Having been out since June Ithink it covers ground that we need covered, musically. Instrumentation is in a fever pitch in a number of sonic harmonies and tones. Blending vocals and music together in their signature style of bass heavy 80's influenced metal. They are one of a handful of bands that truly define these sub genres. Already on a second press, if you're going to get it, the getting is good. My favorite track so far is "Carrion King" with a back of "Bemeath The Scythe". They did a set on KEXP that is just rad, if you can't get out to see them.

Buy

X Weapon X - Demo 2 Review

If you're looking for new hardcore or straight-edge to get in to, look no farther than Louisvilles own Weapon X... because they hate you.

That being said, "Demo 2" is where it's at and over a year old now. A newer offering that proves to be just as quick paced and to the point as previous offerings (demo), definitely proving consistency and drive. I appreciate this band a lot more than other bands in the genre, because they seem to be a bit more tuned up than other bands from this era. I'm not attempting to push nostalgia, but, they do have a certain ambiance about them from the original era.

It's not reinvention or throwback, but perhaps, a next step for both staright-edge and hardcore. The instrumentation and vocals definitely get more harmonious and tighter with each outing. Kicks and open E string chugging get that big sound we all know and appreciate in this genre, and the bullet toms and almost blast beat style rhythm bring a melding of what hardcore is becoming to the forefront. The lyrical content is spot on for what somebody would want in a straight-edge band. Good marks in my opinion. If you like bands like Harms Way, Truth of Pain, Contention, World of Pleasure, or Magnitude you might enjoy Weapon X.

Buy

<category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="N.Y. No holds barred, and no censorship in relation to today's political morality exists in this record. It may not be a reinvention of the wheel but it definitely is a perfection of it. This is a good dose of what society needs, lyrically. Instrumentation is on point, as well. From guitar pedals and cabs, to spot on rhythm, this is what you should want in punk rock. It's only an EP (sad face) but if all goes well, this will be a reason these folks continue to make great music. They do set the stage, and I do follow looking for what they do tomorrow. You should too. Easy to listen on music share sites but they have a physical release out, that needs to sell out. Hope you dig their music as much as I do.

Buy here

Luis R. Conriquez released "Cheerful Young Man" on July 10th and if you didnt know you liked Mexican music now you know. Hailing from Caborca and quitting his gas station job in 2018, his collaboration with La Adictiva and Peso Pluma got him a shot at the big game. This album cements that shot in my opinion. So many awesome sounds on this album. Guitars, trumpets, charchetas and mad features with Netón Vega, Peso Pluma, Óscar Maydon, Joel de la P, Tito Double P, Grupo Frontera, Fuerza Regida and Puerto Rican urban star Anuel AA. Jam packed with cultural richness and the sound he specializes in corridos bélicos which utilizes narcocorrido lyrical elements, earing him his nickname "El Rey de Corridos Bélicos".

"Al Chile Pega" is the song I think should represent the album as a whole. The lyrics are very poignant and the wind instruments blend perfectly with the vocal echo effect and percussive stringed accompaniment. "Que Gacho” feat. Netón Vega is basically a whole new sound and departure from most of his music. Guitars blending with vocal harmony set to a story of heartbreak that ends the relationship and sees the person begin a new life with sex. Good stuff.

So many fantastic tracks and features here, there's never a dull moment. I've included the lyric video of my favorite track, maybe eventually you can find a place to buy it. If it pops up I may drop it down here somewhere. Adios.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://thosemusicjunkies.blogspot.com/2026/07/luis-r-conriquez-muchacho-alegre-review.html' title='Luis R. What you hear in this album is not typical EDM, but a subgenere colloquially referred to as "queer-core" most notably derived from that of DIY punk rock music. This particular iteration of awesome is characterized by a moog, a set of drums, and a vocalist. When "Heavy Handed" came out in '19 there was no indication of the raw power that was to come by '25 in this outing. Taboo lyrical content and party anthem rhythm enough to get paraplegics on the dance floor, "Percepticide" is just what the music scene needed the last couple of years. So much sexual content a sailor might blush in "stamina" as you can watch above, to the heartbreak of "split" and the tracks "noise" & "gonna be faster" almost accomplishing dream pop. This album is eclectic and holds a sound for almost everyone. Some people may find what Pixel Grip does a little over the top and offensive, and to those folks I'd recommend a nice sit down in a quiet room where they aren't affected by anything from this era of civilization. Good luck trying to buy this. I think there's one copy on discogs for about 200 bucks. Maybe a second pressing is coming soon. Until then there's the KEPX show and previous albums on their website for sale.

Lambrini Girls - Who Let The Dogs Out: review

If you've never heard the riot grrrl music this is a good modern place to start. Fans of Le Tigre, Huggy Bear, Bikini Kill, and The Runaways are probably already familiar with this 2025 release. Carrying the torch for riot grrrl sound into the next stage of music, Lambrini Girls are definitely up to the task. A few sub-genres exist in this album, of which include post-punk. Phoebe Lunny and Selin Macieira-Boşgelmez definitely hit a home run with this LP, and the proceedings singles. Bad Apple opens the record with a very punk filled sound and message that leads all the way through the album. Big Dick Energy being another Riot sound, formulated in the original fashion of the subgenre. No Homo lends to a social connectivity lacking in most modern countries, it seems. Nothing Tastes As Good As It Feels and You're Not From Around Here both have a noise rock tint to them with very punk lyricism. One can definitely hear the social commentary in this record and thankfully the message is not lost to boring instrumentation. Not to point out things people may not want pointed out, but, it is easy to tell both current members are neurodivergent. If you sample this sound, it may be rewarding to go backwards in their catalog until the next release.

The first half of this record is a conversation with a not so distant ex lover, but the second half seems to be a plea for ones sanity and self resilience. Lyrically I think Oliver Tree was finding sure footing for his own voice in this effort. The musical styling seemed to be more involved and thought out, as his vocal melody seemed to play and weave in and out of the instrumental EDM a little more. Definitely a male vocal pop stand out. "Superhero" is a stand out track on this outing, as well as "Joyride". Following his entire existing catalog I'd suggest this as his most complete thought, mostly dealing with what seems like a failed relationship. As an underrated artist on Atlantic/R&S he started his own imprint "Alien Boy" which I guess is now defunct due to his unfortunate demise in a helicopter accident in Recreio dos Bandeirantes. This album did garner lots of attention because of his performances at key festivals and an ep of a Radiohead cover. One of their best singles in my opinion. If you have time you should check that out also.

Be aware this alum is for mature audiences and does reflect mentally ill thoughts and phrases with an emotional background in toxic relationships. It is a great album, though. I hope one day we will get a physical copy, until then you can buy digital and listen the same way.

Draculas - Midnight City:

This band and album could be the best thing to come out of texas since the original Power Trip lineup (ignore the new stuff). A dance craze for all of the kids, and lyrics to hook adults, this album is definitely a contender for "album of the year". Easily more melodic than anything else out now, the band showcases a lyrical prowess unseen out in texas. A bit protopunk, a bit garage, a bit new wave come together to birth their greatest effort yet. Three deep (albums or fingers, who knows) and they have their signature sound in my opinion. Dirtnap ought to be glad they came back, because this record is a killer. By track 3 "Head In The Clouds" you won't know which end is up. "Guys Like Me, Girls Like You" to the slower closer "Wheelhouse" is just a blur of sonic synthesizer savory sex silt. This album really does go down easy, no chaser. There's some Riverboat Gamblers, some Rise Against, and some major art growing in Savage Lord Mic, Sam Francisco, and Pink Rick... All of which come together for an out of this world proper banger. Do yourself a favor and buy the digital at dirtnap or pay EU prices from Wildhoney. Maybe you can find it in the wild. Ten years in the making, don't let it pass you by...

Buy

Vinyl

Getatchew Mekuria And His Saxophone- 1972:

If you like instrumental jazz or world folk than this is a great find for you. Lots of entries for these categories can be found butthis Ethiopian entrée is always spinning on my record player. Subtle undertones of African cultural melodies throughout, as it is just saxophone backed by rhythm piano. Re-issued in 2021 the sound quality is still there. Very trance like in melody and rhythm, and very soulful. Gofere/antchi hoyè is the longest and best track in my humble opinion.

Buy

Home Front Watch It Die:

If you're a fan of hard-core punk or new wave this is a modern addition for both. Social commentary of modern international chaos and solid instrumentation for a new generation of fans, this is fairly straightforward. It's a little more relatable than their last record, but packs a very hard punch. Some of the lyrics in this outing are very interesting and important especially on an american level. "Dancing With Anxiety" is a standout point as is "Eulogy" as far as an example of thier sound. So many anthemic tracks on this, as chanting hooks and vocals are normal for this band. Terrific for fans of Singalong melody and rhythm. Lots of fun, even if the lyrics are poignant and pointed.

Listen & Buy

Humankind - Monsoon Season:

If you've heard "Big Dawgs" you will understand "Monsoon Season". From the amazing amount of features on this mixtape, to the amazing sound crafted in general, this record flows with tenicity and anecdotal rhyme. Beyond all of the bells and whistles this album has, it also demonstrates a valid point: Humankind is likely here to stay if he wants to. Easily a ten star improvement over their first ep "Surface Level" which was also pretty good. Having Maxo Kream, and Denzel Curry never hurts anyone's probability in my opinion. The remix of his lead single is pretty outrageous and sick as well. Hit it up or be behind the vehicle that is Humankind. If you enjoy a soundtrack to hyperf focus related activity this album is for you.

Listen

Sacrifice

With the recent discussion of Big Four the canadian version, I figured we need to discuss this band. Their career is long and storied but this album is as thrash as thrash gets and equally as hard as anything from the US of A. From the opening number of Comatose to my favorite track Black Hashish, the album as a whole works. Rob Urbinati shows up as always for this record, delivering his harsh crisp vocals as instantly recognizable Sacrifice.

That being said, there are lots of elements here that span other genres. Personally, it's what I look for in a thrash album, and this one delivers. Under no circumstance is this record anything other than pit worthy, but, it also showcases true growth and a chip in the game of thrash to argue for Canada being successor to the thrown.

Joe Rico and Urbinati play off of each other in a winning combo with Pym and Watts bringing up the rhythm to match ferocity and pit worthy sonic violence. Hitting that progressive sound as well, all things considered you're missing out if you dont buckle down and listen in. A year old already this release is here to stay and cemented in the history of hard music forever.

Buy

Peeling Flesh:

If you've never experienced the Oklahoma metal scene, or slam death metal, you're in for a treat. "Slamming Gangster Groove" as they themselves reference this music is full of rap samples, blaxploitation samples, and hard-core grooves. From Damonteal Harris' growling vocals, to Jason Parrish & Mychal Soto's chugging guitars the sound is uniquely metallic. Coupled with Joe Pelletier's rhythm section Austin Hirom (replaced by Chip Smith) had the bass answer. While gore, murder, and thuggery aren't for everyone, if you like metal in general this should be a no brainer. Three years in, this album finds the band sitting on a throne all but there's in southern metal. OKC produced a maven of excitement and hopefully everyone buys it up. Already announced on the "Louder Than Life" festival in Kentucky, it may result in much needed national exposure. After 11 mistakes and this album they deserve it. Keep your ears peeled for more from them.

Buy

Habak:

If you've never heard the term "Crust Melodico" you're probably behind in the times, and not alone. With a DIY ethos and a vibrant sound, this band "Habak" from Tijuana Mexico is for you. Although a language barrier may exist between listeners and lyrics, we as a world should start overcoming that, these days. From a crust (sub-genre of punk) sound with heavy melody, to some clean instrumentation this band is to be taken very seriously. A very mature, even grave lyric subject may be intense for some listeners, I do urge anyone to give it a try (internet translation is easy to find today) because you never know what your missing.

The title track to this record is very good, and very resounding. Time enough to feel how you feel these days, enough said. I have to say the subject matter of "Condenadx Al Olvido" makes that track my favorite. From rhythm to melody, after the mesmerizing intro. But, I'll let you be the judge:

Condenadx Al Olvido

I see in my hands the passage of time—the marks left by the immortal monster.

Written upon my path is my destiny: to bear witness to humanity.

Time and space conspire against a being condemned to solitude.

We are tellers of a thousand tales—stories that time will soon erase; only man truly knows man, yet at the end of his era, not even he will remain.

Time and space conspire against a being condemned to solitude.

We are nothing...

Only man truly knows man. Constantly morphing from one sound to the next, with an ever changing landscape of musicians Rivers Of Nihil is here to stay. In my opinion, this album is the reason why they are cemented. The future and present of technical death metal, this album is a definition of sound. The lead single "Where Owls Know My Name" is more progressive in that arena with instrumentation not heard as often in technical landscapes. Zach Strouse from "Burial In The Sky" provides that sax. Brody Uttley is the driving force behind this album (and possibly the band) and the journey he steers is mesmerizing.

Jake Dieffenbach's last outting with them brings ferocity unequaled in the following releases, some say. Though I tend to disagree. The trilogy on this record are definitely "Hollow", "Death Is Real", & " Where Owls Know My Name". I'll leave you with their description of it:

"Owls is essentially the story of the last man on earth. He was made immortal by the planet itself (the conscious seed of light, as it were) to be the sole intelligent witness of the death of the planet. Really though this is all set dressing for the more emotional content on display here, so looking too closely at the lyrics for story purposes is probably a bit of a futile effort in my opinion. It's really just about loss and getting older and coping with the things you've done in your life."

Buy it:

Yelawolf: Radioactive

I was already familiar with the Alabama rapper known as Yelawolf before this album was released. His mixtape, Trunk Muzik, was original and interesting so I was excited to see his first official release (on Shady Records, no less). It dropped in November 2011.

I had a bad feeling about this CD when I heard the lead single, Hard White (Up In The Club), which I hated through and through, and it turned out to be a sign of things to come. I don't know what I was expecting, but I wanted the raw, gritty sound that set Yela apart from other rappers. What I got was a slick, overproduced piece of... I don't know. It seems as if Radioactive was worked over in favor of hit records, and it lost whatever was essentially Yelawolf's individuality. His original flow and Southern fried lyrics are still there, and maybe I am being a whiny bitch, but the music itself almost seems second rate. I saw an argument recently that this is Eminem's influence on Radioactive, but I can't buy that since the Bad Meets Evil CD was good all the way through. Maybe this one was just a product of over thinking? It's like they just tried too damn hard.

I'm not saying this record is completely awful, it's still marginally better that what's currently being marketed as rap these days. There are a few standouts on Radioactive, namely the second single, Let's Roll (featuring Kid Rock). Growing Up In The Gutter is pretty much what I was looking for with this CD, and The Hardest Love Song In The World is also memorable (and mentions Axl Rose). The Eminem feature, Throw It Up, which many people were anticipating, isn't much more than a let down.

Like I said, this CD is better than most of the 'rap' acts that record companies are shoving down our throats. And for that, I give Radioactive SEVEN STARS.

Maybe it's because they're from Richmond, or maybe it's because my brothers (especially the older one) pretty much threatened me if I didn't listen to them. As with any music, what we don't understand can quickly become favorites if we take the time to appreciate them.

Resolution is Lamb of God's signature music. No departures here, they give us exactly what we ask for and have come to expect. I made a Face Book comment that I hope anyone who had a copy of this CD also had seat belts for their faces, because they were about to get blown off. I've read some other reviews for Resolution that were very negative and all I can say to those people is STFU. I wanted LoG to bring it, and they did.

Though I will admit to often needing the lyrics to figure out what the hell Randy Blythe is singing/screaming/growling, once I've got that down, the music itself begins to take on new meaning. Much like Pantera before them, Lamb of God does good business in making aggressive music. The music itself is a mosh pit junkie's wet dream. For me, the standout songs are Desolation, Ghost Walking and King Me. My one issue with LoG, and most metal bands in general, is that the music does get repetitive. Several songs into the album, I have to put it away for a while, and I'm sure this comes from not being a "true" hardcore metal fan. Opinions are always opinions though.

On a scale of zero to ten stars with zero being the worst, I'm giving Lamb of God's Resolution EIGHT STARS.

I made a comment on an earlier post where I wondered what Sublime would have been if Bradley Nowell hadn't died so young.

Then I got to thinking that a lot of people only know Sublime's two biggest songs, Santeria and What I Got. They were so much more than that.

Sublime's Greatest Hits, released in 1999 (three years after Nowell's death) is almost like a time capsule, a still-relevant time capsule. Their two major hits are there, along with Badfish, 40 Oz to Freedom, Date Rape, and my personal favorite - Smoke Two Joints. These songs really are timeless, and they take me back to drunken parties and driving all night. The music isn't technically genius, and, by themselves, the lyrics aren't the greatest ever. But, when they're put together, they create something that I doubt we'll ever have again. Sublime said what we were thinking, and now new generations of people are able to enjoy the splendor all over again.

Though Sublime has continued their musical journey with a new singer (and some nasty legal problems) as Sublime With Rome, I will be honest in admitting that I've never listened to any of their post-Nowell content. I know it just wouldn't be the same.

On a scale of one to ten with one being the worst, this album gets a SOLID TEN.
