In Bethlehem a vacant council seat will be filled by Joe Price who defeated C.L. Wood Jr. with 21 votes to 10. With city officials that number in the teens you might be wondering who all these voters were. They didn't vote at Bethlehem City Hall. Voters in Bethlehem were directed to the Sheriff's office in Winder. The 2013 Barrow County elections, according to the unofficial results from the Barrow County Board of Elections and Registration, saw a total 12 percent of registered Winder voters turn out. In the Winder race was Nicole Tobias who said she was proud of garnering 102 votes despite being a new resident. “A goal of mine is so people would have a choice and there would get to be an election,” she said. If you have a choice to be happy or angry, which would you choose? Obviously, most of us want to be happy and choose the first one—but it’s not always easy, I know. Sometimes people do things that you don’t understand—perhaps they’ve had a rough life, or even just a rough day. When we react to a situation that is negative, it only grows and festers in our minds and hearts. So what can we do? You teach others how to behave toward you. While you cannot change other people, you can influence them through your own behaviors and actions. By being a living role model of what you want to receive from others, you create more of what you want in your life.” When you accept a negative behavior over and over from someone, you enable them to continue with habits that don’t serve your relationship. You are telling them that it’s okay to be late, it’s okay not to show up for our appointments, and it’s okay to be disrespectful. Sometimes you can’t influence positive change, and when that happens to me, I move on. They will have to figure out what happened, and hopefully that realization will make them into a better person for themselves and their new associates. I move forward, but I don't forget. I’ve found that in relationships, setting boundaries is key. It takes so much more of my energy to be negative and angry. I’m not saying that you should walk away from every negative situation that you encounter, as good relationships are defined by how you work together through the ups and downs. But if perhaps we could be mindful of how we react and think of the consequences. In 2007 the Barrow County News printed the headline Sandy McNabb Running Unopposed(for Mayor of Bethlehem). Actually the election results were 34-5. Every city with cosmopolitan ambitions will have a planning document that shows the vision for the future of that city. That vision will, almost invariably, have the same elements—bright shiny skyscrapers, verdant parks and gardens, wide boulevards and efficient mass transport. Bethlehem got historic buildings bulldozed, our first red light, and booze and the people who drink it moving in from elsewhere in Barrow County(Statham, Winder, Auburn). Streets lined with trash and empty cans and bottles, crippling traffic accidents and tons of money flowing to the guys who stood and chatted by the pickup trucks in the city hall parking lot after city council meetings. After announcing that he was running for re-election, 'good old boy' Dixon said “The decisions that are made are not made by one person but eight—six council members, the mayor and city administrator,” (and the Sheriff Dept.) Squabbles among the good old boys don't always go the way our political leaders like. Vogel, a good old boy down in Auburn, said “I don’t run on anybody’s agenda, I run on my own and if the people want something that’s what I do. I don’t have a hidden agenda.” Nobody asked or said he had a hidden agenda. This election saw a total 12 percent of registered Winder voters turn out. Friends are important. Two Bethlehem residents voted early in the race between C.L. Wood and Joe Price. The Barrow County Board of Commissioners has scheduled a called meeting for 3:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28, but the meeting will be closed to the public, because the BOC will be screening candidates for the county-manager position. In addition, Winder's city government has scheduled a "grant funding and employee benefits" meeting for 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29. City administrator Don Toms said it will not be a meeting of the full city council, but the public is being notified because four councilmen might attend and that would constitute a quorum. No action is to be taken during the meeting. It will be in a conference room on the second floor of the new Winder City Hall at 25 E. Midland Ave. Entrance to the building will be monitored and regulated by the Winder Police Department. WHO IS JOE PRICE? The Barrow County Chamber of Commerce recently asked candidates in local elections to complete a questionnaire and has made the responses available to the press. In an email to Barrow Patch, President and Chief Executive Officer Tommy Jennings indicated the chamber received no response from Auburn council candidates Donna Scouten, Bob Vogel and William Acworth. The chamber also did not receive a reply from Bethlehem candidate C.L. Wood. 1.) Why do you feel you are the best candidate for the Town of Bethlehem? Joe Price – Heart – I have a heart for people so what better way to serve them than in political office. 2.) What do you see is your role in city council in economic development, to support and grow business? Joe Price – To find out all the facts, consult with my ffelow city council, discuss it with the mayor and find out public opinion. Then make a well educated decision. 3.) Do you feel local government supports economic development adequately, and should there be more or less than what is currently being done? Joe Price – Yes I do, but I believe we should always be open for better ways for our community. 4.) How can we “get on the same page” to work for a common goal, and who should set that goal? Joe Price – As the main hub between Gwinnett and Athens I feel that all the towns in Barrow County should unite together to make decisions for the betterment of the whole, lest we should forget united we stand, and divided we fall. Read between the lines. The more you know who you are, and what you want, the less you let things upset you. All that time, never even knowing just how blind I've been. Bogart — After a difficult third quarter for his company, Caterpillar Chairman and CEO Doug Oberhelman said Thursday he was grateful to have a reason to celebrate. The top officer of the Illinois-based company that builds giant earthmovers said he found it in the grand opening celebration of Caterpillar’s sprawling factory here that straddles the Athens-Clarke and Oconee County line. The factory, about 60 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta, will be Caterpillar’s “global source” for “small-track” bulldozers and mini hydraulic excavators. It was a major manufacturing coup for Georgia when it was announced early last year. It was a win that took about $75 million in state and local incentives. So far, about 300 of a promised 1,400 workers have been hired, and Oberhelman said he expects the plant to be fully operational and staffed by 2015. He said about 2,800 more jobs could follow from Caterpillar suppliers that are expected to locate near the new plant. For a state still shaking off an economic slump that followed the Great Recession, it’s welcome news. Georgia’s unemployment rate still worse than the national average. Softness in the mining sector resulted in disappointing earnings for Caterpillar in third quarter. Revenue slipped 18.4 percent compared to the prior year and Caterpillar lowered its sales and profit forecasts for 2013. Caterpillar has also temporarily idled some plants and cut thousands of jobs. But Oberhelman said Caterpillar is committed to its new Georgia plant and sees better days ahead for the company. “Georgia is very important to us in the scheme of our global footprint around the world,” he said. Caterpillar has several other Georgia facilities, including ones in Griffin, LaGrange and Thomasville. Gov. Nathan Deal told reporters the incentive package was “a small price to pay” for a facility and employment of this magnitude. He told the new Caterpillar employees that producing a highly-skilled workforce has become a hallmark for the state, and that they are ambassadors to show the world Georgia workers can build the highest quality products. A resurgence of residential construction should provide a boost for the new Caterpillar plant. The small bulldozers and excavators built here are aimed at the residential market, road projects and other small-to medium-sized construction jobs. They’re also among the fastest growing in Caterpillar’s fleet, Oberhelman said. Dillon Nelson, 21, of Winterville, was hired in February as a welder. He said he had few worries about getting work, but finding a place for a career was another matter. “There are many places that offer short term jobs,” he said, “but there aren’t many places that offer a career like Caterpillar does.” Caterpillar could have located anywhere.

Tiny Georgia town with holiday name draws postal deluge

BETHLEHEM, Ga. — Even in the Internet age, greeting cards continue in popularity as the media of choice for many to wish family and friends a merry Christmas.

Since Thanksgiving, more than 75,000 of those cards started their trips at a post office in Bethlehem — that is, the quaint Georgia town 20 miles west of Athens.

“We keep track of them every year,” Bethlehem Postmaster Ada Czajkowski said of the Christmas cards. “We had over 100,000 last year.”

The Bethlehem post office receives packages of Christmas cards from other places in Georgia and as far away as Alaska, Germany and Norway to mail.

The first known Christmas card was sent in 1843 in London when Sir Henry Cole hired John Calcott Horsley, a painter and illustrator, to design a card to send to his friends, according to the Hallmark Card Archives.

But it was Lithographer Louis Prang, a Prussian immigrant in Boston, Mass., who is considered the father of the Christmas card after publishing the first card to say “Merry Christmas” in 1875.

Since then, sending Christmas cards grew into a holiday tradition, not just in America, but throughout the world.

“My mom raised me to send Christmas cards to friends and family and it’s a tradition I continue and enjoy,” said Sarah Cook of Statham.

But thanks to smartphones, tablets and computers, many now opt to send electronic cards via the Internet.

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and many other social media outlets make it simple to send an image to a friend or family member, telling them happy birthday or get well soon.

Christmas cards, though, seem to buck the electronic trend in favor of an envelope and stamp.

“There’s nothing like receiving a Holiday card in the mail from loved ones,” said Laura Gibson of Athens. “Our daily business has a tendency of stealing our attention and it can sweep us off our feet, but receiving a sweet card filled with loving words or snapshots of beautiful faces can bring us back where we all should be, focused on the importance of each moment and each sweet soul that has touched our lives.”

The Associated Press recently reported that greeting card maker Hallmark intends to shut down one of its production plants in Kansas, which makes a third of the company’s cards.

However, according to the U.S. Greeting Card Association of America, Christmas remained the No. 1 card-sending holiday in 2011 with more than 2 billion boxed and individual Christmas cards sold last year.

Sales are expected to reach $427 million this year and boxed holiday cards are experiencing strong sales as well, according to the association.

“I know that I love opening up the mailbox to see handwritten envelopes this time of year, knowing that they contain Christmas cards that have been sent to my son and me,” Cook said. “We hang up the cards in our kitchen so that we can look at them all season long.”

Many of those cards make their way to the Bethlehem Post Office to receive a postmark stamp with the name of the biblical site of Jesus Christ’s birth.

“It means a lot to people,” Czajkowski said.

I have been following the Zen viewer since day 1, when Zena Juran first decided to start contributing to the TPV initiative in SecondLife. Her goal then, and her goals now are still the same, keep it simple, and allow the ability to access Open Sim grids as well. I have to say, she hits it right on the mark. This viewer is simply a joy to use.

It includes a built in Grid Manager, with 21 pre-loaded Open Sim destinations already included. The preferences menu's are pretty much standard LL V3 with some extra added well chosen goodies tossed in as well.

Here is a nice touch, you can choose your onscreen notifications to display either in the top or bottom right corner of the screen.

LSL Pre-Processor with Optimizer / Switches / Lazy Lists / Local Drive #include option's. I must be out of the loop, because this is the first time I have noticed these option's, and I have absolutely no idea what they do.

( Please disregard the the floater panel in the upper left hand corner of the screen, I was testing a new screen capture utility while doing the initial testing. )

Perhaps I have been out of the loop for way to long, but it has been ages since I actually downloaded and used an official LL-SL Viewer, and I could actually care less. The stock LL-SL viewer is a horrible piece of junk as far as the UI is concerned, I will admit it is rock solid as far as crash rates go, we have Oz Linden to thank for that, but it is drab, boring and I refuse to lower myself to using it when there are so many great TPV's available to choose from, so I am not really sure if these features are available or or not in the base SL version.

The Zen viewer includes a direct link to The SL Market Place via the inventory panel with a button labeled SHOP.

Also it seems as if some improvements have been made to the Build Menu Tool.

Area Search, and built in AO are included also.

The Camera Control is nice and compact with a built in Draw Distance adjustment, and all in all, I have to say. This is what, in my opinion the Stock LL-SL viewer should be. Performance is good, it is easy to use with a very straight forward design, and even includes a Fly Override. The next time I run into a Noob, the Zen Viewer will definitely be the one that I recommend.

Zena updates her viewer on an incredibly frequent basis, so be sure to check in regularly. Here is a direct link to the download.

Movie fans who want to make sure they get a seat at the Jan. 12 grand opening of the new Gateway Cinema 12 entertainment complex in Barrow County can buy tickets early all day Thursday.

Wayne Bartlett, one of the developers of the commercial area where the new complex has been built, said the box office would be open throughout the day Jan. 12 for early ticket sales. Carmike Cinema's newest theaters are on Exchange Boulevard near the intersection of highways 81 and 316 south of Winder.

The 12 theaters have enough seating to accommodate 2,300 moviegoers and feature wall-to-wall screens, digital projection, digital sound, and high-backed, theater-style seats with retractable arm rests.

But anyone lucky enough to wind up in the complex’s lone “BigD” theater – the first clue will be the leather seats – can expect to experience something akin to “HD on steroids,” promises the company’s marketing director, Terrell Mayton.

Only one of 13 BigD theaters in the United States, the newest has a screen that is 62 feet wide and nearly three stories high. Its state-of-the-art digitized video format displays 1,000 colors and 1 million shades of color, all at 30,000 lumens, which is the brightest light output in the theater industry, Mayton said.

The picture seems to just “pop off” the screen, he said.

“It’s indescribable. Words do not paint the picture for BigD. You have to go in and see it and feel it.”

Admission on the Jan. 12 opening night is only $1, which matches what guests also will pay for small popcorns and small drinks. The night’s proceeds will be donated to The Tree House Inc. in Winder.

“All the movies will be recent releases, so there will be a wide variety of choices,” Mayton said. “We are finalizing the schedule with the movie houses this week.

“It will be a great opportunity for folks from Barrow, Jackson and surrounding counties to see the BigD auditorium and all the auditoriums we have there.”

Gateway Cinema 12 is located in The Gateway at University Parkway near the intersection of Highways 316 and 81. The theater is east of both the Chick-fil-A restaurant and Athens Regional First Care facility.
