Movie fans who want to make sure they get a seat at the Jan. 12 grand opening of the new Gateway Cinema 12 entertainment complex in Barrow County can buy tickets early all day Thursday.

Wayne Bartlett, one of the developers of the commercial area where the new complex has been built, said the box office would be open throughout the day Jan. 12 for early ticket sales. Carmike Cinema's newest theaters are on Exchange Boulevard near the intersection of highways 81 and 316 south of Winder.

The 12 theaters have enough seating to accommodate 2,300 moviegoers and feature wall-to-wall screens, digital projection, digital sound, and high-backed, theater-style seats with retractable arm rests.

But anyone lucky enough to wind up in the complex’s lone “BigD” theater – the first clue will be the leather seats – can expect to experience something akin to “HD on steroids,” promises the company’s marketing director, Terrell Mayton.

Only one of 13 BigD theaters in the United States, the newest has a screen that is 62 feet wide and nearly three stories high. Its state-of-the-art digitized video format displays 1,000 colors and 1 million shades of color, all at 30,000 lumens, which is the brightest light output in the theater industry, Mayton said.

The picture seems to just “pop off” the screen, he said.

“It’s indescribable. Words do not paint the picture for BigD. You have to go in and see it and feel it.”

Admission on the Jan. 12 opening night is only $1, which matches what guests also will pay for small popcorns and small drinks. The night’s proceeds will be donated to The Tree House Inc. in Winder.

“All the movies will be recent releases, so there will be a wide variety of choices,” Mayton said. “We are finalizing the schedule with the movie houses this week.

“It will be a great opportunity for folks from Barrow, Jackson and surrounding counties to see the BigD auditorium and all the auditoriums we have there.”

Gateway Cinema 12 is located in The Gateway at University Parkway near the intersection of Highways 316 and 81. The theater is east of both the Chick-fil-A restaurant and Athens Regional First Care facility.

WINDER - Winder business leaders and community members are excited about a local option for big screen movies starting this week. Carmike Cinemas is opening a new theater.

Barrow County Chamber of Commerce President Tommy Jennings said it's a good economic indicator for the area.

"A movie theater is a bullseye for any number of retailers and restaurants looking to locate within an activity center."

The 12-screen multiplex on Highway 316 near Highway 81 is at the Gateways of Barrow, according to Jennings.

"Our partners in the development business have been in communication with several restaurants, chain restaurants that we think would be a good addition to the Gateways and to that area of Barrow County."

Jennings said the theater was holding a soft opening Wednesday night, with a benefit Thursday night and an official grand opening and ribbon cutting Friday afternoon.

The opening marks the first time Winder residents don't have to leave town for a theater experience since the last one closed in the 1980's.

Another 10 arson fires were set in Los Angeles Saturday morning, bringing to 32 the number of blazes now under investigation by fire officials. The latest group were all in North Hollywood.

Friday night, there was one more fire set in West Hollywood, in the same area where the first batch of 21 went up Thursday night and Friday morning.

Most of the infernos started with cars being set afire. They quickly spread to nearby houses and apartment buildings.

One man has been arrested, although he's not yet been charged. "It's too early to say whether we have a copycat," Captain Jaime Moore, of the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

WINDER - The final sunset, the final twilight, is approaching for an icon in downtown Winder. With demolition scheduled early next year for the Granite Hotel, there are memories of how the old building, now lifeless, was once full of warmth and life and shaped the lives of people who stayed there.

"It was a beautiful place," recalled Martha Blalock, at the Barrow County Historical Society, housed in the old county jail, down the street and within view of the hotel's granite walls at the corner of Broad and Athens Streets.

Winder's city council voted on December 6 to approve a $178,000 demolition bid on the two-story building. Council members said there was no way to justify not tearing it down because of the cost of restoring it, and in the current recession, the lack of development funding available for the task.

The job of bringing the Granite down is liable to be ticklish; extra care is needed to avoid damaging other buildings and city streets before the site can become a "pocket park," part of Winder's streetscape project plan.

The demolition cost is just the latest entry in the city's ledger of Granite Hotel expenses. The Winder Downtown Development Authority (DDA) purchased the hotel in December 2004 with $200,000 provided by the city. City officials spent at least $230,000 to stabilize the building, but time and the elements continued to wear the Granite down.

Developers have not helped. Bids to buy the Granite from the DDA hit financial snags and those snags meant no real renovation efforts. The old hotel is in such poor shape city officials cannot see investing any more money in preservation.

The Granite is not only in the center of Winder, it is in the center of the town's history. The Granite was built in 1899 on the site of the original "Jug Tavern," a double log cabin where travelers were served corn whiskey in brown fired jugs, hence the town's original name, "Jug Tavern." The Granite, with its estimated 28,000 square feet, remains the largest locally quarried granite building in the state. Its granite blocks came from a quarry south of town owned by Winder founder Wiley Bush, whose son-in-law C.M. Ferguson was a granite mason and is credited with building the hotel.

"We're very upset because it's part of history and our ancestors, we just hate to see it torn down," Martha Blalock said. Since the Granite is soon to disappear, she said she plans to create an information pamphlet about it so people will remember it. It will be available at the museum.

"It will have pictures of what the hotel looked like when it was first built and then, sad to say, the way it looks now," she said. "It had a restaurant, the rooms were nice and it was a good place to live. It was a good place to be when you came to visit friends in Winder or to do business in Winder."

That's the way 92-year-old Virginia "Ginny" Barron remembers the Granite. Following her service as an Army nurse in Burma during World War ll, she and her husband Bill stayed at the Granite for six months until they could move into an apartment during the housing shortage days in Winder following the war in 1945.

In those days, the Granite's owner, a Mrs. Couch, served home- cooked meals in the hotel dining room on the first floor three times a day and downtown business people would stop in for lunch. A number of senior residents boarded at the hotel as well as the overnight guests. The second-story rooms were not elaborate, but they were comfortable.

"People there were friendly," Mrs. Barron remembered. "It was just like family in a hometown, hospitable hotel."

After the 1940s, the Granite began the journey to the broken, boarded-up place it is now, falling into gradual disrepair until the final visitor lodged there in 1972 and the second floor was closed, according to Helen Person, Chairwoman of the Barrow Preservation Society.

"We continued to have ground floor retail until 2006," Person said. "The city bought the building in 2005 and they believed the ground floor was not safe anymore so they moved the businesses out of there."

Person is one of the preservation advocates who have opposed the hotel's demolition.

The Society formed last year to oppose the demolition and to look for renovation grants.

"The Fox Theatre (in Atlanta) was saved with six minutes left and the wrecking ball was standing across the street," she recalled. " We still hold out hope that someone could come forward and say 'yes, we'd love to work with your group.'"

Person said it would take a consortium of people with public and private money to put together a package to save the building and rehabilitate it as a hotel with ground floor retail shops.

Person believes the Granite could find a new life as Winder's front door, attracting visitors and local folks back to downtown. If not, "it's going to leave a huge hole," a huge hole where once there was a beautiful place, remembered as a "good place to be."

If Joseph and Mary were making their way to Bethlehem today, the Christmas story would be a little different, says Father Ibrahim Shomali, a parish priest in the town. The couple would struggle to get into the city, let alone find a hotel room.

"If Jesus were to come this year, Bethlehem would be closed," says the priest of Bethlehem's Beit Jala parish. "He would either have to be born at a checkpoint or at the separation wall. Mary and Joseph would have needed Israeli permission – or to have been tourists.

The faithful also flock to Bethlehem, GA - and not just to get their Christmas cards stamped at our local post office. Every year, for about 49 years, on December 22nd and 23rd, at 7pm and 8pm each night, Bethlehem United Methodist Church, AKA 'the big white church', outs on a nativity scene and retelling of the classic story at the corner of Star St. and Christmas Ave in downtown Bethlehem, GA.

This year, it poured rain, puddles half a foot deep. Who knows? Maybe it was the presence last year of Barrow County Cops who sat for 2 hours with their blue lights flashing off the sheperds and angels for absolutely no reason. I think they were there to direct traffic, but when the show ended and traffic cleared out, they just sat there. Maybe GOD didn't like that..................

Bethlehem First United Methodist Church — located at 709 Christmas Ave. in the heart of downtown Bethlehem — is busy putting together last-minute preparations for its annual live nativity pageant later this week.

Under starry skies Thursday, Dec. 22, and Friday, Dec. 23, the church will sponsor a re-enactment of the story of Jesus Christ’s birth before a multitude of church members, residents and visitors. The scene will be played out during two showings both nights — at 7 and 8 p.m. — lasting approximately 30 minutes each.

Admission is free, and attendees should plan to bundle up and possibly bring an umbrella, as the forecast calls for low temperatures of anywhere from 41 to 54 degrees with a slight chance of showers. Regardless of the weather, all are welcome to attend this time-honored Christmas tradition in the small Georgia town that shares its name with the birthplace of Jesus Christ.

BURGLARY: An unknown burglar smashed the front door of a Bethlehem convenience store around 3 a.m. on Nov. 22, 2011 and took $2,000 worth of cigarettes and $2,000 of potpourri.
While a burglar alarm sounded after the door was smashed, the burglar was gone by the time deputies arrived.

Conclusions:
1. BCSO is slow under Jud Smith's leadership. It might be an inside job.
2. When you sell Meth II and call it potpourri you get your door smashed some nights.
3. The insurance company will write the owner of the Bethlehem Chevron a check for the stolen merchandise and the door, and probably never discover that he faked the warranty papers for that used A/C unit and that roof repair.
4. The Guv might even check up on the Bethlehem Chevron and fine him again for overcharging customers for gasoline.
5. Really, I just wish the Meth II wasn't being sold so close to where I live and for the sake of the children in the neighborhood!!!

The annual Bethlehem Christmas Celebration will be held at the corner of Christmas Ave. and Star St. December 22nd and 23rd at 7PM and 8PM.
Hopefully, unlike like last year, the BCSO won't show up with flashing blue lights and sitting in their cars for the entire ceremony. For the taxpayer's record, they didn't even get out of their cars and direct traffic when the show was over.

Incumbent Bethlehem Town Council Member Scott Morgan drew 22 of 49 total votes for the Post 4 council seat, while challengers C. L. Wood Jr. and Doug Koestel drew 15 and 22 votes, respectively.

reporter for the local paper, sometimes you get odd election coverage around Barrow County. Sandy

ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Transportation has awarded G.P.' S Enterprises Incorporated, a Barrow County-based company, the construction contract to build an interchange on State Route 316 at Collins Hill Road and at State Route 20 in Lawrenceville.

The project is the next step in improving State Route 316 by extending limited access from its current end at State Route 120 to east of State Route 20.

"This project will build one interchange or exit to allow traffic from 316 to access 20 or to access Collins Hill Road using a system of long ramps, called collector distributor lanes," Georgia DOT District Engineer Todd McDuffie said.

"The existing signalized intersections at State Route 20 and at Collins Hill Road will be removed as the interchange is finished. It is similar to the system we have along I-85 from SR 120 down to Pleasant Hill Road. You get off the mainline of I-85 south at SR 120 and use the parallel roads to access the exit you need."

The contract was awarded for $37.3 million and includes 2.237 miles of new roadway and two new bridges over State Route 316.

Road work is expected to begin next Spring as weather permits and is scheduled to conclude by December, 31 2014.

Mayor of Bethlehem Sandy McNab, who ran unopposed according to the Barrow County Journal, and his secretary, a reporter for the Barrow County Journal, will be welcoming the crowds of families to the annual Bethlehem Star Festival. They will not be stopped by the someday to be installed RED LIGHT Mr. McNab has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to get installed. Nor do they have to worry about Bethlehem being a 'dry city' by tradition, alcohol is now brought in by the eighteen wheeler. McNab, a government employee in Gwinnet County by day, is enjoying the new taxes and is even talking about attracting new businesses to the city such as WalMart with the hopes of collecting even more taxes. Nope, the city with the Star and all the streets named after things in the Bible is no longer the same. Booth rental for the BETHLEHEM STAR FESTIVAL has been jacked up to $50, but you can still expect to find the usual hot dogs, boiled peanuts, and lemonade. Chick-Fil-A, 3 miles away, with a Bethlehem address, will not be participating. Nor will Stevi B's, also 3 miles away with a Bethlehem address but answers the phone and advertises as 'Stevi B's Winder', bother to show up. The Bethlehem Star Festival is held in downtown Bethlehem, at the corner of Christmas Ave and Star Ave, there is even a kid's Ferris Wheel this year. Yup, pony rides for the kids and the unemployed hubby can sneak on over to Chevron, load up on porno mags and crack pipes, and blow $30.00 for some "Manufactured By Bliss" incense, not for human consumption. Me? Ill go down and take a few pics, see if any of the bad amateur musicians show up for their gigs, and try to find something to buy for a few dollars from one of the arts and crafts vendors. If I can find anything, it'll probably be just the boiled peanuts, hot dogs, and lemonade vendors and a few politicians and government booths. Im too old for the inflatables and they won't let me take a pony ride. The GREAT THING ABOUT LIVING IN BARROW COUNTY, is that you can say whatever you like in your blog because the controlled local media is just part of the good ol' boys and nobody will ever know about it. Just for laughs, Im going to hang out at the Chevron and spot the Meth-II addicts coming back for yet another packet of $30 'incense' MANUFACTURED BY BLISS.

Local Bethlehem Woman Dies In Car Crash

A Bethlehem woman was killed in a single car crash early Friday morning in Loganville, according to city police.

Ann-Marie Smith, 41, of Angie Way, Bethlehem, died at about 3:30 a.m. Friday when her car crossed a road and hit a tree, according to the Loganville Police Department.

Lt. John Fain, of the Loganville PD, said Smith was the only person in the car. The crash is still under investigation, he said.

According to the crash report, Smith, driving a gray 2008 Honda Accord, was going north on Chandler Haulk Road to Sharon Church Road, southwest of downtown Loganville. Chandler Haulk Road ended and Sharon Church, however Smith did not turn. According to the crash report, she drove across Sharon Church Road, through grass, across a driveway and into a tree.

Walton County emergency medical personnel extricated Smith from the vehicle and transported her to Gwinnett Regional Medical Center, according to the report.

Family members said memorial donations can be made to a Children’s Education Fund at BB&T on South Broad Street in Winder, care of Smith’s husband Andy Smith. They have two children. Her funeral was held Tuesday at Flanigan Funeral Home in Buford.

Times-Georgian - Angel Food Ministries shuts down One less place to go for food

Angel Food Ministries announced Wednesday it is shutting its doors for good after 17 years of providing discounted food to needy families, including some here in Carroll County.

The Monroe, Ga.-based nonprofit released a statement to news organizations and posted a message on its website, saying it has not found a solution that will allow it to continue operations.

The organization had announced Sept. 7 that it was suspending food distribution for September and had laid off its full-time staff of 90 workers in Monroe.

“With the help of our volunteer staff, 98 percent of the thousands of customers who placed an order for September have already received a full refund,” the Wednesday announcement said. “We will continue to work with the USDA to credit the remaining 59 customers who used their SNAP benefits to place a September order. Federal regulations prohibit us from simply sending them a check for a full refund.”

The announcement said a group of former employees and food vendors are “working to find a better way of serving those who have come to depend on Angel Food.”

Lowell United Methodist Church in south Carroll County offered the Angel Food program through its church, helping between 20 and 30 families each month.

Lowell UMC Pastor Tim Constien told The Times-Georgian last week that he is contacting people who used the Angel Food services and is referring them to Open Hands United Food Ministries, which has a food bank and offer financial assistance. It is being supported by a number of county churches. Open Hands’ headquarters is at 505 Newnan St. in Carrollton.

Eddie Adams, chairman of Open Hands, said Thursday it’s too early to gauge the impact of Angel Food closing down, but it means one less place to go for food.

Adams said Open Hands was first run by the First Baptist Church of Carrollton, but at least 10 other local churches have become involved in it. He said it is continuing to grow.

Robbie Smith, who chairs the Carroll County Soup Kitchen, said he expects his organization might see some increase from those needing food, although the soup kitchen provides only cooked food.

He said the soup kitchen began by offering hot lunches on the last full week of the month, but now is open on Monday and Thursday of the other weeks.

“We also deliver about 300 meals per day,” he said.

Smith said several food pantries have opened up, many run by churches, and he feels this will absorb the loss of services from Angel Food Ministries.

“We’re very fortunate in Carroll County, because we have people who will give their time and money,” he said.

Angel Food was started in 1994 by pastors Joe and Linda Wingo in Monroe, serving 34 families. At its height, the organization grew through a network of more than 5,000 churches, feeding 500,000 families per month in 45 states.

There were no income requirements, but the program was aimed at families in need. People placed orders for multi-meal boxes of meat, vegetables, fruit and other staples from a menu that varied monthly. The food cost between 30-50 percent less than what a customer would typically pay at a grocery.

The FBI launched an investigation into the ministry and a lawsuit was filed by board members and former employees, accusing the leadership of using the nonprofit as a moneymaking venture.

The lawsuit was settled in 2009, with an exchange of money and promises to make changes to protect the charity’s finances. Angel Food spokesman Steve Savage said no charges were filed in the FBI investigation.

The first Sand Mountain Tea Party will gather at the Northeast Alabama Agri-Business Center on Saturday.

The keynote speaker is Jody Hice, of Bethlehem, Ga.

"Dr. Hice, in addition to being in the ministry, hosts a daily radio program titled ‘The Jody Hice Show,'" coordinator Ron Rollins said. "The show is heard in five states and is dedicated to informing listeners about moral, Constitutional and religious liberties facing our nation."

Hice is also the co-host on "There's Hope, America," a daily television program in the Atlanta area.

"Dr. Hice, also, became a leading spokesman in the fight over the right for the Ten Commandments to be posted in the courthouse in Barrow County, Ga., working closely with Chief Justice Roy Moore of Alabama," Rollins said. "He also led the challenge in Georgia against the IRS over the rights of pastors to speak out against moral and political issues from the pulpit, as the risk of losing tax exempt status."

Hice is the author of "Deeper Than Water" and his new book, "It's Now or Never: A Call to Reclaim America."

The rally will be at noon in Rainsville.

KISS bassist, Gene Simmons made a guest appearance Tuesday at the famed LA baseball stadium, throwing out the first pitch for the Dodgers Vs Mets game, and RadarOnline.com has the video and photos.

Simmons strutted to the pitcher's mound, briefly took off his signature sunglasses before throwing the pitch, and then promptly put the glasses back on. Simmons threw an impressive pitch, and the crowd went wild.

Simmons longtime girlfriend, Shannon Tweed and their daughter, Sophie were also in attendance. According to sources, Chelsea Handler was spotted in the Dugout Club supporting the rock legend, after he was grilled last month on her late night show, Chelsea Lately. Gene also spent time chatting with All-Star player Matt Kemp, and getting a few pointers from the Dodger players.
