"Куда угодно, только не в Эмираты..." - думала я, ожидая новостей о контракте и маршруте корабля прошлой осенью. Совсем не потому, что я капризная, или имею что-то против восточной стороны. Просто из всех возможных направлений, это казалось мне наименее интересным.И когда на зимний сезон я попала конечно же в ОАЭ, я сделала вывод, что Дубай и Абу Даби с самым высоким зданием в мире, самыми дорогими отелями, самыми большими торговыми центрами, роскошью и богатством - это все же не мое, но познакомиться с ними, определенно стоит.
Немножко фотографий вперемешку.

'Anywhere, but not in Emirates...' - that were my thoughts when I was waiting for some news about next contract and itinerary last autumn. Not because I am capricious or having anything against Eastern side. Just among other routes this one seemed the least interesting of all. When of course I went to the UAE for a winter season (thoughts are material, yeah), I came to conclusion that Dubai and Abu Dhabi with the highest tower, the most expensive hotels, the biggest malls, luxury and richness are not for me, but it's worth it to take a closer look at them.

Недавно наткнулась на письмо, которое отправляла подружке с корабля в очередном приступе тоски по дому:). Да, работа на круизном лайнере – это страны, люди, опыт и куча ярких моментов. Но часто бывает, что не хватает самых простых вещей ( я уже не говорю о том, как не хватает мамы и близких):

Not long ago I found by chance a letter to my friend which I sent from ship while pining for my home again:). Yes, working on cruise liners means different countries, people, experience and heaps of great moments. But it happens sometimes that you are lacking the most simple things (I don’t even say about mum and close people, this is clear anyway):

«…Мне хочется говорить по-русски и смеяться над шутками, которые как ни старайся, а точно на другой язык не переведешь. Мне так хочется принять ванну, а не тесниться в этом малюсеньком душе, и потом спокойно высушить голову, не думая о том, что буду мешать соседке. Мне так хочется поспать в своей кровати, где я могу менять постельное белье тогда, когда мне этого хочется, а не тогда, когда это решают в отделе хаускипинга. Мне так хочется выпить чаю с лимоном так, как я люблю – хороший черный чай, много лимона и очень много сахара. А как мне не хватает моего кота… Мне так хочется послушать музыку, мою музыку – громко! И так хочется не шептаться даже, когда находишься у себя в каюте, потому что везде все слышно, абсолютно везде. Мне так хочется просто уйти куда-нибудь погулять вечером, но нет, ты сейчас в море – а если не хочешь общаться с народом и тусить на вечеринке – сиди в каюте. Ты не представляешь, как мне хочется проснуться от солнечного света, а не в полной темноте, понимая, что уже утро только благодаря будильнику, потому что в каюте нет окна, и весь день только электрический свет. Мне так хочется перестать кашлять, но здесь везде кондиционеры, а лекарство от кашля, который здесь выдает доктор, лучше использовать как снотворное, что я и делаю, потому что оно сразу вырубает. Мне так хочется сходить к моему парикмахеру, а не к корабельному, который сделал мне короткую прямую челку, и я чувствую себя типа «Вау, мне снова 14». Мне так хочется просто натянуть джинсы, если мне нужно на 5 минут выйти из каюты, но практически везде в джинсах ходить, конечно, нельзя, поэтому давай натягивай юбку и каблуки. И Господи, как же мне надоела еда на корабле – в меня больше не лезет паста каждый-каждый день. Я все это пишу и улыбаюсь, понимая, что потом буду смеяться над этим…»

'...I want to speak Russian and to laugh at jokes which is not possible to translate accurately into another language however you try. I want so much to take bath, but not to be squeezed in a tiny shower-room, and then to dry my hair without thinking that I can disturb my cabinmate. I want so much to sleep in my own bad where I can change linen when I need it, not when housekeeping department decides to do it. I want so much to drink tea with lemon as I love – good black tea, much lemon and much sugar. And I just need to say to my cat how I love him. I want so much to listen to music, my music – loudly! And not to whisper even when you are in your own cabin, because everything is being heard everywhere, absolutely everywhere. I want so much to go for a walk in the evening, but no, you are at sea – and if you don’t have mood, just stay in cabin. You can’t imagine how I want to wake up because of sunlight, not in full darkness, understanding that it’s morning already only because of alarm clock, cause there is no window in the cabin. I want so much to stop coughing, but ACs are everywhere, and the medicine given by doctor here should be used as a soporific one actually…and I do, cause it turns you off immediately. I want so much to visit my hairdresser, not the one from ship who made a short straight bang and I am like:’Wow, I am 14 years-old again!’. I want so much just to wear jeans, but of course it is prohibited to wear jeans in most of ship areas. And God, how tired I am from food on ship – eating pasta almost every day is too much. I am writing everything and smiling, as I know that then I will laugh about these thing..'

Прошло 3 месяца как я дома, а смеяться мне так и не захотелось. И я знаю, что если отправлюсь на работу снова, опять буду мучить свою соседку по каюте рассказами о том, как я скучаю по дому. Я еще здесь, а уже тоскую. It’s already 3 months since I came back home, but still I am not laughing, And I actually know that if I go to work again, I will torture my cabinmate with my complaints about missing home again. I am still here, but already feeling long for my home.

А хотя вот фотографии пересматриваешь, и радостно…И хандра даже проходит. Микс из карточек от разных-разных людей - моих коллег и гостей. И всеее со мной в этот раз. Помимо нашего трехдневного похода в горы, в Румынии мы также совершили и трехдневное путешествие на машине. И вновь это было для меня новым опытом, потому что раньше в приоритете были автобусы, поезда и самолеты. В последнее время также корабли, но здесь уже из-за рода деятельности…Причину, почему автомобили оставались в стороне, сейчас и не найду. Хотя, наверно, прежде всего это было связано с отсутствием попутчика, который по совместительству был бы отличным водителем, да еще и получал бы удовольствие от пересечения трети страны, сидя за рулем. В это раз все было по-другому.

Piatra Neamt – Brașov – Bran – Vidraru Dam - Transfăgărășan - Sighișoara – Salina Praid – Bicaz – Piatra Neamt - таким был наш маршрут. И хотя, конечно, к концу третьего дня мы упали без сил, это было здорово – увидеть столько мест, каждый раз просыпаться с новым видом из окна и получить массу впечатлений всего за 3 дня.

И да, в этой поездке я как-то ленилась фотографировать. Как ленилась вставать по утрам, думать о том, что кушать на обед, отвечать на сообщения, общаться с новыми знакомыми, покупать сувениры и многое другое. Хорошо, что рядом есть тот, кто спасал ситуацию…и, например, делал кадры за меня время от времени.

In addition to our hiking in mountains, in Romania we also had a 3-days-long trip by car. And again it was a kind of new experience for me, as before buses, trains and airplanes were in priority for travels. Lately ships were added to this list, but this happened just because of work. Now I can’t find the reason why I never chose cars for having trips. But actually… probably first of all it was connected with the absence of a lovely fellow traveler, who was an excellent driver at the same time, and also got pleasure from crossing 1/3 of the country behind the wheel.

Piatra Neamt – Brașov – Bran – Vidraru Dam - Transfăgărășan - Sighișoara – Salina Praid – Bicaz – Piatra Neamt –this was our itinerary. Of course in the end of the third day we just fell without any power, but in total it was really cool – to see so many places, every time to wake up with a new view from a window and to get so many pleasant impressions just in 3 days.

And yeah, I should say that I was quite lazy to take photos during my trip in Romania. As well as I was lazy to wake up in the mornings, to think what to have for lunch, to answer messages, to talk to new friends, to buy presents and souvenirs, etc. So good that there is somebody near who can save the situation…and for example to take shots instead of me.

Brașov

Городок Bran, где находится знаменитый замок Bran, якобы являющийся замком Дракулы, очень порадовал своими зелеными окрестностями, уютными кафе и милой гостиницей, где мы остановились. Замок же оказался очень симпатичным и очаровал меня все же больше историей о том, что в начале двадцатого века здесь жила принцесса Мария, внучка императора Александра II, ставшая Королевой Румынии Марией, выйдя замуж за принца Фердинанда. А вот Влад Цепеш или Влад Дракул в 15м веке останавливался здесь всего несколько раз, и то не факт.

The town Bran, where the famous Bran Castle, or Dracula's Castle is situated, made us happy with green surroundings, cosy cafes and cute hotel, where we stayed. The Castle turned out to be a really chraming one and enchanted me with the story that in the beginning of XXth century Princess Marie, the granddaughter of Russian emperor Alexander II, was living. After getting maried with Prince Ferdinand she became Queen Marie of Romania. So, Russian roots, you know...Concerning Vlad Tepeș, he stayed in the castle for a couple of times only, and still it's not a proved fact.

Плотина Vidraru впечатлила, конечно, размерами - высота 166 м и вместимость 465 кубических метров воды.

Vidraru Dam impressed with the size of course - height is 166 metres, and it can store 465 million cubic metres of water.

Еще мы очень долго добирались до наивысшей точки знаменитого шоссе Трансфагарашан - 2034м. Дождь, облака и туман снова не позволили нащелкать фотографий с солнечными горными видами, но зато создали какую-то особенную захватывающую атмосферу. Только вот кружки горячего чая очень не хватало - в кафе на вершине был только фруктовый...а это моя большая нелюбовь.

For quite long we were driving to reach the highest point of famous mountain road Transfăgărășan - 2034 meters. Rain, clouds and fog didn't let us take photos of shiny mountain views again, but at the same time created some special thrilling atmosphere. The only one thing made me a bit sad - it was not possible to drink hot tea in the cafe on the top - they had only fruit sort...which is my big dislike.

А вот у города Сигишоара связей с знаменитым героем все же побольше - Влад Цепеш Дракул, в чем-то послуживший прототипом вампиру, а на самом деле бывший правителем региона Валахии, и кстати сказать, очень даже справедливым, здесь хотя бы родился.

The city Sighişoara has more connections with the famous character - Vlad Tepeș Draculea, who at some point became a prototype for a well-known vampire created by Bram Stoker, and who actually was Prince of Wallachia, and by the way a fair leader, was at least born here.

И напоследок соляная пещера Salina Praid...

And in the end a cave Salina Praid.

Еще у нас, конечно, была поездка в Бухарест, но там почти все время у меня болела голова, и отчасти поэтому не осталось каких-либо впечатлений. Так что есть повод вернуться...
Also we had a trip to Bucharest, but there my head decided to ache almost all the time, so no any impressions from the city. Means there is a reason to come back.

Хотя сегодня и последний день лета, прохладно и небо затянуто облаками, грустить по этому поводу у меня совсем не получается…Наверное, потому, что впереди у меня еще более длинное и жаркое лето, так как по работе на зимний сезон я, похоже, снова попаду в теплые края. Зато сегодняшняя погода и чашка горячего чая напомнили мне о другом летнем дне, который в июне я провела в Румынии – у подножия горы Ceahlău. Примерно час езды от города Piatra Neamt, и выходные с планом отправиться в поход в Карпаты и добраться до вершины, начинаются.

День, который мы провели в местечке Izvorul Muntelui, запомнился мне как один из самых счастливых, без преувеличения, дней из всех моих путешествий. Дождь и самый настоящий волшебный лес, горы с облаками на их вершинах, горячий травный чай и местная кошка, которая по-хозяйски удобно устраивается у тебя на коленях и ничуть не отказывается от предложенной ей шоколадки…

In spite of the fact that today is the last day of summer, it’s quite cold and cloudy outside, I can’t say that I feel sad about this fact…Probably because a long and hot summer is still waiting for me as with my work it looks like my next winter I’ll spend in warm countries again. But the weather we’re having today and a cup of hot tea reminded me about another summer day, which I spent in Romania this June – at the foot of Ceahlău mountain. About one hour journey from Piatra Neamt city, and a weekend with the plan of hiking in Carpathians begins. I’ve remembered the day we’ve spent in the place called Izvorul Muntelui as one of the happiest days from my trips. Rain and magic woods, mountains with clouds on their tops, hot tea with herbs and a local cat, that makes herself comfortable on your knees without asking you and doesn’t mind a chocolate offered to her…

Надо сказать, что в Румынии больше всего меня впечатлила природа – именно здесь находится самая большая территория нетронутых лесов в Европе. Раньше у меня не было опыта походов в горы, поэтому разметки на деревьях с маршрутами, горные речки, таблички с предупреждением, что с тропинок уходить нельзя, так как недалеко бродят медведи, очень меня впечатлили. Раньше такой лес я видела только на картинках и в сказках – грибы, коренья, мох – понимаешь, что видишь только малую часть в этом зеленом мире потому, что здесь идет своя жизнь, скрытая от посторонних посетителей.

I should say that in Romania I was mostly attracted by nature – there is the biggest territory of pure woods in Europe. Before I didn’t have experience of hiking in mountains, that’s why all the markings of itinerary on trees, mountain rivers, tablets with warnings of not leaving paths as bears are not far away, made a big impression on me. Formerly I saw such forests only in pictures and in fairy tales – mushrooms, roots, moss – and you realize that you see only a small part of this green world, cause here it’s another life hidden from visitors.

Когда через 3,5 часа подъема мы добрались до вершины, где находится остановка для любителей хайкинга - Cabana Dochia, наслаждались мы открывшимся видом всего полчаса. Все оставшиеся выходные мы жили в облаках... Из-за набежавших туч вспомнился любимый Ёжик в тумане и его «…и даже лапы не видно…»

When after 3,5 hours we reached the top and Cabana Dochia - the stop for hiking lovers, we enjoyed the views only for half an hour. Then all the weekend we lived in clouds…The top of the mountain was overcast and that made me think about beloved Hedgehog in the fog (from the cartoon of the same name) and his words ‘…even the pad can’t be seen…’

Однако следующим утром мы все же решились подняться на самую высокую точку горы Ceahlău – вершину Toaka (1904 м), что было не совсем просто по двум причинам: в тумане невозможно было определить, где же эта вершина находится; и мой страх высоты, снова давший о себе знать. Хотя если смотреть только вперед и на тропинку у себя под ногами, то задача становится выполнимой…и это того стоит. Потому что, когда тучи все же расступаются, и сознаешь, что ты все еще на земле, но при этом уже в небе, как-то забываются все переживания, да и поводы для них – на самом деле становятся мелкими и пустячными...

Still next morning we brought ourselves to go to the highest point of Ceahlău – the peak Toaka (1904 m), what was not that easy because of two reasons: in the fog it was impossible to get where exactly this peak was situated, plus my fear of heights. But if you look only in front of yourself and on the path under your feet, the task starts to be accomplishable…and it’s worth it. When the clouds give away and you realize that you are still on the earth but at the same time already in the sky, you forget all the worries, and the reasons for them start to seem really small and trivial.

И кстати, спуск оказался гораздо сложнее подъема.
By the way going down was much more difficult than going up.

Долгий-долгий перерыв, много-много фотографий, десятки городов, моря, проливы, самолеты, впечатления, открытия, разочарования и очередной переворот в голове – процесс не простой, но похоже, вполне естественный, закономерный, и скорее всего, полезный…Почти месяц до дня рождения, когда исполнится 25. Почти год, как я работаю на кораблях. 2 простых предложения, и все происходящее в голове становится объяснимым.

Несмотря на уже сложившуюся традицию каждое лето вдруг превращать в время глобальной переоценки ценностей, понимания того, что раньше не хотело укладываться в голове, пересмотра и изменения взглядов на очень и очень многое, это лето, которое не стало исключением, было радостным и приятным. Это и долгожданная встреча с мамой после полугода в море, и любимый мятный чай на даче, мой огромный серый кот, друзья куча замыслов, пусть пока и невыполнимых…

И конечно, поездка в Румынию, от которой не очень было ясно, чего же ждать, а в результате масса самых положительных эмоций, и совсем новые чувства. О ней я напишу свой следующий пост и попытаюсь снова оживить свой блог, который постараюсь на этот раз не забросить. Надеюсь, это поможет мне привести хоть в какой-то порядок все эти тонны фотографий и впечатлений за прошедший год перед скорым началом нового контракта и отправлением в следующий рейс.

Воскресный пасмурный полдень в Генуе…OST New York I love you. Ехать или не ехать в Портофино. Завтрак – хлопья, молоко, апельстиновый сок и маффин – первый раз за неделю спокойно и много. Очень нежно внутри. Разговоры с соседкой про позитив внутри, космос и отношение к проблемам как к возможностям. И все время рядом друг, который появился так неожиданно, и который стал таким дорогим.

Какой-то очень счастливый вечер. Свободные полдня, солнечные очки, паста со шпинатом, океанариум и ламантины, долгожданный разговор с мамой, волнующийся кот и тоска по дому во время разговора с подругой, усталость. Вечер с фотографиями и стихами Веры, которые мы читаем друг другу по скайпу…И как-то очень сладко внутри…

Так получилось, что зимой я попала на тренинг в Италию, который мой папа назвал «маленькой армией», с чем не могу не согласиться. Однако помимо долгой дороги, 36-часовых суток, репетиций чрезвычайных ситуаций, волнения перед экзаменами и очень холодной комнаты, которая в принципе не может прогреться из-за толстых стен 18-го века, были и прогулки по замечательным городкам, и смех с новыми знакомыми, и долгие разговоры по скайпу, и…и много, чего еще.

Пыталась вести дневник и фотографировать – первое у меня всегда плохо получалось …Но на пару постов в блоге хватит.

«…Нашим волгоградским тушкам далеко до самолета в Геную – вот где действительно страшно. Зато сочетание ананаса, которым накормили во время полета, гор и облаков в иллюминаторе наполнили приятным ощущением начавшегося приключения, которое ты сам для себя придумал…»

«…Еще один нереально длинный день, огромное количество информации – не понимаю, как моя голова не отключается, ведь столько, сколько я узнала за эти 2 дня, я не узнавала и за 2 прошедших года…»

«…От усталости уже забываю английский и отчаянно жалею, что бросила когда-то учить итальянский – таксист явно был разочарован, а я еще больше...»

«…Кажется, что тренинг не закончится никогда – в одном дне как будто уже не 24, не 27, и даже не 36 часов. Хочется все рассказать маме, но у нее не работает скайп. Кажется нормальным, что я живу в Генуе, а каждое утро встаю не с будильником, а со звоном колоколов из церкви неподалеку – как раз в 7 утра…»

С Аней мы познакомились, договорившись о съемке. Но встретившись для этой цели, мы выяснили, что у нас много общих тем, поэтому прежде чем начать творческий процесс, просидели за чаем и разговорами два часа. Чему я очень рада, потому что Аня вдохновила не только на фотосет, но и утвердила мои намерения в кое-каких начинаниях. Потому что она сильная. Несмотря на свою внешнюю хрупкость.

Очень люблю этот светлый добрый праздник! Как-то особенно верится, что все будет хорошо, что все уже хорошо - и получается радоваться именно здесь и сейчас, в данную минуту. Наверно, завтра опять навалятся заботы, и что-то снова будет тревожить, но сейчас тепло на душе.

Иногда у меня бывает хорошее настроение, и я поддаюсь на уговоры моей подруги Вики, которая всегда очень переживает, что я много фотографирую, но мало фотографируюсь. Во время нашей прогулки, которой я рассказывала в посте "Пляж" (http://margarita-dyakova.blogspot.com/2011/11/blog-post.html), вышло несколько кадров и со мной. Спасибо, дружок мой.А вообще, я люблю фотографироваться).

Sometimes I have a good mood and can't stand my friend's ground, who is always upset that I take many photos, but have a few photos of myself. During our walk, which I described in the post 'Beach' (http://margarita-dyakova.blogspot.com/2011/11/blog-post.html), we took several shots of me. Thank you, my dear friend. And in genral, I love to be photographed).

Осенние прогулки продолжаются. Недавно почему-то очень захотелось на пляж...с фотоаппаратом, солнечными очками, хорошим настроением и песнями Adele. А когда хочется, надо осуществлять) Несмотря на холод, очень здорово провели время. Одним разом не ограничились.На фото - моя подруга Вика.

Steve Jobs' Stanford Commencement Speech 2005

I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.

The first story is about connecting the dots.
I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?
It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?" They said: "Of course." My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.
And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.
It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:
Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating.
None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, it's likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.
Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

My second story is about love and loss.
I was lucky — I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation — the Macintosh — a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.
I really didn't know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me — I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.
I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.
During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I returned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple's current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.
I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle.

My third story is about death.
When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.
Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.
About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn't even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor's code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you'd have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.
I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I'm fine now.
This was the closest I've been to facing death, and I hope it's the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:
No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960's, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.
Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish." It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.
Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.
