school community”. If almost half of students do not feel like they are part of the community in schools by Sergiovanni’s definition we are not respecting their needs and we are not trying to understand their ideals and respect who they are.
Building a Rapport with Students Building a community is important, but how do we accomplish this? One of the first steps is trying to build a rapport
with students. The article “The Nature of Rapport and Its Nonverbal Correlates” by Linda Tickle-Degnen and Robert Rosenthal says the threeways to build rapport with studentsare:

•Trusting that others can be believed is an important element in human learning
•Teachers are in daily contact with students, and they are the first line of communication between the school and the family (student)

•Trust builds honesty, and honesty speaks to the integrity and behavior of the teacher.

While the article finds positives in trust as far as resulting in better grades,it also found certain situations where the lack of trust was common. Three

Holistic Learning
As teachers, what kind of assignments do we assign, how do we grade them,and what do we say to students while in class? These are all important questions for teachers to consider. What
is also important is that teachers should take into account what students enjoy and hear their opinions on how the classroom is run. After all,
“how students feel about school and their coursework is in large measure determined by the quality of the relationship they have with their teachers.” Below is a list of things a

While targeting international networks and groups is effective, networks that you may already belong to, like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter, can also be extremely helpful if leveraged properly. In fact, Horowitz says his first international speaking gig came from LinkedIn.Ramdev uses these networks to stay in touch with people after he has met them online, at a conference, in a webinar, or by commenting on a blog. “E-mail is very hard to send because it’s one on one,” he says. “If I update my Facebook status, though, I have 30 or 40 people commenting on it.”It’s important not to go overboard while inviting people to your network on these platforms, however. “More connections doesn't necessarily mean better, stronger relationships that help you in business,” he says. “Work first on interacting on a regular pace with your peers in the group through the discussion.”Shah also recommends limiting the number of groups you’re involved in on sites like LinkedIn as well: “You want a productive relationship, which means that you should interact with others in the group for some time and decide for yourself if it is worth staying in,” he says. “This means that it will take time to form your relationships in each group. The effort is not wasted, however, if you decide not to stay. It gives you perspective into different views and mindsets. Also if you look across groups, you might find the same names appearing repeatedly as they post. They may be worth getting to know.”It’s also worth understanding that different networking sites are popular in different countries. 3. Attend International Conferences and Webinars Online
Luckily, there are a lot of webinars and live-streamed conferences out there. Seek out these opportunities to connect with industry professionals, and when you attend, make sure you stick around for conversation. After you physically attend a conference or seminar, you generally make small talk with your fellow attendees and the host after it ends, right? There’s no reason you can’t do that online as well.“It’s a little more difficult obviously, however, the approach is very similar to offline,” says Ruegger. “You might also do that by chatting or sending a quick e-mail to follow up. It can also be personal. It doesn’t have to be very stiff and business-like. Something that makes you approachable, that makes you nice.”Shah suggests taking advantage of the bio and contact information that is usually posted for each speaker by making contact after the seminar. It’s also helpful to chat with the group in the group space during the webinar or contact individuals about a comment they made or a question they asked during the webinar.Another great way to stay in touch with your online international contacts is to invite them to your own webinar, which you can create using tools like Supercool School.
4. Find a Way to Interact With Your Contacts

Collecting contacts internationally isn’t merely a matter of adding connections to your social sites. If you want a valuable international network, you’ll need to stay in touch.Ruegger’s approach is to be as helpful as possible. “Send opportunities, links — anything that you know these people would value. Send it over, give a contact, introduce people, and bring people together,” he says. just like offline. Introduce people to each other. All these interactions over time will build you a network that needs to be nurtured.”Ramdev stays in touch with his network, which is mostly composed of entrepreneurs, by linking to information that will be relevant to them on his Twitter feed

5. Make Your Web Presence Internationally Friendly

When Horowitz started his first web page in 1996, he took very seriously the phrase “world wide web.” His page included an introduction that was translated in a number of languages and apologized for an inability to translate the rest of the page.Today, he is able to use a WordPress plug-in called Global Translator that automatically translates his site into 48 different languages.Horowitz also started the International Association of Earth-Conscious Marketers and recommends using the word “international” in any discussion groups or e-mail threads you start. “Having the word ‘international’ in print says, ‘you are welcome, we want your input,'” he says
6. Understand How Networking Differs in Other Cultures“There are significant differences in culture that alter the way you network,” says Ruegger, who has spent time living in China and several European countries. “American people have a tendency to understand networking and its purpose as possibly useful, but it’s much harder on an Asian continent.”Ruegger says the best way to learn about networking in other cultures is to live there. For instance, while living in China he learned that it’s not culturally appropriate to criticize people or make suggestions in a public setting like a forum.Obviously, moving to another country isn’t an option for everybody. But you can still take cultural differences into account. “Even though it may be virtual, people instinctively transfer the work behaviors, norms and expectations from the physical world into the online world,” Shah says. “There are many books on working with international cultures which would be a good start. Search Google or Amazon for "Doing business in ."You can also use a site like Forrester Research to learn about how people use social media in whatever country you wish to target.Shah says one thing to keep in mind is that in some cultures, personal and business networking is strictly separate. Therefore, it might be advisable to exclude your beach photos from profiles that you plan to use for international business networking.
7. Meet Online Contacts in Person Whenever Possible
It’s great to have online contacts, but offline relationships are often easier to maintain. Since starting up two years ago, we've created dozens of relationships with freelancers. Here's what we've learned about how to find, nurture, and work with the best talent--even when it's only temporary.

When you work at a big company, it's easy to get the people around you to do their jobs: If they don't, they won't last for long .
With a start-up, it's a completely different story. When we left our jobs at Time Inc. to start Altruette.com, we didn't have a budget for any full-time hires, so we knew we were going to have to rely heavily on talented freelancers we could bring on board for project work. We've had freelancers make models for our charms, help us with PR, work on writing projects, assist at trade shows...you name the task, we know a freelancer who can do it. We've had dozens of these relationships over the past two years, and we've learned a lot about how to find great freelancers--and how to work well with them. In fact, we've learned too much to fit into one column. So here we'll talk about how to find and hire great freelancers, and in Part II next week we'll talk about how to work productively with them.

Where to Find Them

When we started out, we were lucky to have a few former coworkers from our magazine days that helped us out. Beyond that, our go-to place for spotting freelancers in the wild was Craigslist. Pros include the fact that posting an ad is relatively cheap and the responses we received were of high quality. However, every time we hired through Craigslist we needed to meet six or seven candidates in person before moving forward, since from their resumes it was hard to tell who was going to be the best fit. So it was labor-intensive, but we've had some great finds, including which has been our Web-design firm from the start.
More recently, however, we've started using LinkedIn for hiring. Our favorite feature is the ability to search for a person's previous work experience. If you admire the look or branding of a particular company, you can zero in on the people who used to work there. That's pretty incredible. Especially in creative fields like design, we've found that even people with day jobs are often open to consulting. We've hired both designers and prop stylists this way.
One caveat: if you're not connected to these people, you'll need to upgrade your LinkedIn account so you can contact them directly with InMail. However, they guarantee you'll get a response or else you get another "credit" to email someone else. We got responses from everyone we contacted this way--so it was well worth it.

What to Ask Them

We can't stress enough how important it is to meet in person before committing to work together. Our favorite example of this is our very first charm modelmaker. Being two thirty-something women, we tacitly assumed that we would hire a thirty-something woman to translate our ideas into charm prototypes. And the first batch of resumes were all women who were lovely, stylish ladies. Our final interview of the day was a middle aged guy we'll call P. When he walked in, we thought it would be a short meeting, especially since he didn't have a slick online portfolio for us to review beforehand. But then P pulled out an entire bracelet of charms he'd designed, cast, and finished. It was classic, and gorgeous, and exactly what we wanted. We never would have guessed it was a fit from his resume, but P went on to design our entire launch line.
So, once we're face to face with a candidate, there are several questions we now ask routinely. The first, most important question to ask a freelancer is: "Are you searching for a full-time job?" If the answer is yes, ask whether they will still be able to commit to finishing your project if they are hired elsewhere. It's not necessarily a deal-breaker for us, but having been left in the lurch twice, we now need to get a commitment, at least to a given project.
And actually, we now put pretty much everything in writing at the start. It's true that after a great brainstorming session where you really connect with a talented freelancer, sending a contract can almost feel like asking someone you're dating to sign a pre-nup. It's just so impersonal, and unpleasant, and hey, can't we just assume that this is going to work out? In a word, no. We've learned the hard way that "spend a bit of time" on the project means 40 hours to one person and 15 minutes to someone else. You learn that finishing a project "soon" means anywhere from three hours to three months. Now every time we bring a freelancer on board we spell everything out, and update the agreement as soon as the project expands or changes. Be careful to include all your expectations in this document: The one time we got into real trouble was when a freelance designer introduced us to a factory contact. We liked their work and and ended up asking them to source something else for us .
Once you have it in writing, though, the fun part begins. In the next column we'll talk about how to make every freelancer feel like a part of your team.
