What She Wears: Avery Cox

"Hey yall! So excited to be here on Emily is Running in Heels today! I was so excited when Emily asked me to be a part of "What She Wears." Since I live in Maine, I figured I would give you what we do best... Plaid. Plaid and snow that is. I picked up this jacket at a thrift store recently, and immediately called up my (other) friend Emily Delamater to go photo field tripping. It's so warm, and so retro awesome. I'm mad for plaid. Because the jacket is a lot of pattern, I kept it simple with jeans, boots, and cashmere socks and faux fur for warmth.

Baby Things

I've mentioned this multiple times, but both of my cousins have the most beautiful baby girls. One of my most favorite guilty pleasures is to spoil them absolutely rotten. I just can't seem to help it! Now that I've discovered Sweet William (a Brooklyn kids boutique) there really will be nothing I can do to stop myself. I mean come on, just LOOK at that little kiwi!

Have a Glamourous Weekend

Wow,

This week has simply flown by! My apologies for such lite posting lately, the last couple of weeks have been absolutely insane. I hoping to get back to regularly scheduled posting soon:)

What are your plans this weekend? One of my best friends in the world (since the 6th grade!) is coming to visit, and I'm super thrilled to show her around NYC. It's her first time here, and I love seeing this crazy place through a visitor's eyes. I'm sure our weekend will be filled with lots of gossiping, laughing, and shopping-- nothing ever changes really.

I just returned from Alt Summit, a conference for bloggers and creative folks. I won't lie -- it was full of some of the most stylish girls I have ever come across in real life, and it was so full of fashion inspiration! So because of Alt, I decided to create a little homage to some of the trends I saw there. There was oodles of colorful denim, red lips galore, and nerd glasses seemed to be the coolest thing going. Toss on a little leopard print and you'll be good to go!

What are you up to this weekend? Are you celebrating Valentine's Day early, next weekend, or February 14th exactly:)? I'm going to be running errands this weekend, but hopefully will squeeze in some time to see The Vow and get a Valentine's Day pedicure. I'm SUCH a sucker for romantic movies this time of year (or any time, really), and I just bought some awesome purple polish that I can't wait to try out.

My Shows, Now and Then

For some reason I recently felt a strange nostalgia for TV shows I watched as a kid. I mean, TV was awesome back then, right? This nostalgia led me to some online shopping (at around midnight, never a good idea) and I ended up buying all five seasons of Saved by the Bell on DVD. Whoops!

Currently, I seem to be watching really over the top dramas, with plot lines that are absolutely ridiculous and delicious. It's always so nice to detach for a bit, and be engrossed in an episode.

What shows do you watch? Am I missing anything that is a must? I'd love to add a few new shows to my line up!

*Side note, I watch way more TV shows than this currently... they just wouldn't fit in my cute little post, ya know? I feel like it's worth a mention that I was an AVID The OC watcher for the years it was on, and also Lost, of course.

What She Wears: Valentine's Special

I interrupt our regular What She Wears guest post series to bring you a Valentine's Day special.

(See, I told you I love it so much.) I don't care if its cliche, for V-day I like to go all out girly-pink, red, gold, hearts, and sparkle.

As I was making this board, I couldn't get everything to quite match. It just felt like one big gold glitter fest.

Then, I realized I kinda like it! Because if you can't go full out glam on Valentine's Day... really, when can you?

Sacher Torte: Valentine's Recipe Special

Five years ago, I was lucky enough to be able to live in Vienna, Austria for about five months. During that time, I'm pretty sure I ate my weight in sweets, pastries, and lattes. I found myself strangely nostalgic for Vienna this weekend, so I decided to make up a Sacher Torte, one of the Viennese specialities.

After I was done, I was definitely pleased with the results and felt like I needed to show it off. Seriously, Sacher Torte? It's perfect for a swanky dinner party, or a romantic Valentine's day date.

The recipe looks a bit involved, and it kind of is...but really its just a lot of steps. None of the steps are hard or complicated at all, and you end up with a delicious impressive looking cake.

*Side Note* I'm fairly certain that my doorman already doubts my sanity due to the number of times I have locked myself out, been trapped in the basement, and received packages from online shopping sprees. I didn't help my case any when he found me in the stairwell in my pajamas Saturday afternoon with this entire spread, laying down three steps to get the perfect shot (the stairwell is the ONLY PLACE with natural lighting in my apartment). Him: "Um... Can I help you with something..." Me: "Oh No thanks! Just a little photo session going on."
Recipe after the jump.

Torte:

10 ounces bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped (use something fabulous, I used lindt 70% dark chocolate)
1 cup sugar
2/3 cup unsalted butter, softened
8 eggs separated (most annoying part of this whole recipe, beaten whites with stiff peaks in one bowl, yolks in another)
1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour

Apricot Filling:

3/4 cup sugar
2 cups water
2 cups dried apricots
2 tablespoons lemon juice

Combine the sugar and water in a medium saucepan over high heat. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer, stirring for about 5 minutes, until the sugar has dissolved and the syrup is clear. Add the apricots and simmer for 25 to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the fruit has broken down, and the mixture is thick and smooth. Stir in the lemon juice and cook for 5 minutes longer. Remove from heat and cool.

Chocolate Ganache Topping:

1/4th cup + 1/2 tablespoon unsalted butter
16 ounces semisweet chocolate (2 2/3rds cup chocolate chips)
1/4th cup light corn syrup
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Melt the butter in a double broiler over medium-high heat. Add the chocolate and corn syrup and cook, stirring constantly until the syrup is melted. Remove from the heat, stir in the vanilla, and let cool.

Whipped Cream (optional):

1 cup heavy whipping crea
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 teaspoons sugar

Comine the cream, vanilla, and sugar and beat with a mixer until soft peaks form. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

To Prepare the Torte:

Preheat the oven to 324

Butter and flour a springform pan

Melt the chocolate in the microwave (be super careful not to burn it!) and set aside. Beat the sugar and butter in a large bowl with a kitchenaid mixer (or your hands and a wooden spoon if you are awesomely strong). Add the egg yolks one at a time, blending after each addition. Add the vanilla, and fold in the chocolate and flour. Fold the BEATEN egg whites into the batter.

To Bake the Torte:

Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 40-50 minutes until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool. While the cake is baking, make the apricot filling and the chocolate ganache.

To Assemble:

Cut the cake into three layers (the trickiest part) and spread the apricot glaze as a filling between them

*Note* If you accidentally broke the cake during this part, the apricot glaze acts as a PERFECT glue to get it back together. Spread the chocolate ganache over the cake, and if you feel like it, save some ganache to decorate. Let the cake cool in the fridge at least an hour until set, decorate as desired.

Serve with whipped cream and enjoy!

Happy February everyone!

I'm so excited to get this month started (yesterday), because I'm a huge Valentine's day fan. I'd love to know, what are your thoughts on Valentine's day?

My roommate says she's an "equal opportunity holiday celebrator" (I love that.), and

in my opinion, I don't think a holiday that allows ridiculous amounts of chocolate, pink, and flowers can be all that bad. Even if you don't have a significant other, it seems that any day that will give us some relief from the month of February is cause to celebrate! This month, I'm going to be featuring some Valentine's and relationship themed posts, so I hope you'll stick around, even if it isn't your favorite:)

I'm going through this phase in my life where I need to feel a bit empowered. Has anyone else ever felt like that?

I was given the best advice recently concerning my life, and everything else: Why do you feel like you have to ask for permission to go after what you want? Who really is going to hold you back?

I'm just going to put this out there, and see what happens. I'm wanting to start a creative project that's new, exciting, challenging, collaborative and inspiring. I'm starting to formulate exactly what that's going to look like, but if you have any awesome and thrilling ideas, I would love to hear.

hi there. i'm katie, from the parsley thief - a food blog with a bit of lifestyle, parenting and design thrown in. i'm very excited to get a chance to participate in emily's what she wears series - this is something i love doing, but don't get a chance to as much as I would like. emily and i met at blogshop nyc last fall - she's a super sweet girl and i'm happy to have discovered her great blog!

most days my style is comfortable clothing because i work from home and can really wear whatever i'd like. but when i do go out - even if it's just for one of my boy's sports game, or a trip to the market, i try to put some measure of effort into looking decent. this is a difficult time of year to do a style board because everything in the stores is moving into spring, yet it's still freezing out! yet - it's the perfect time of year for layering - one of my favorite things to do. i love mixing colors and patterns - playing with textures and accessorizing to tie a look together.

Thanks so much Katie! I just wanted to throw in there to all you readers that Katie AND her two kids were sick yesterday, and she still managed to put together this beautiful post. Talk about a woman who can do it all!

Monday Sunshine

I'm not sure what's more depressing: Mondays, or the fact that it's completely dark and dreary outside. I guess it's the combination of both that's getting me this morning. Also, I don't know what I'm going to do with my life in the near future, so that's something. If you have any suggestions, feel free to send them my way.
