Online education is improving lives in India

2019-05-29T02:29:00.000-07:00

India is now the third largest online market for education in the world.

Owing to the steady economic growth and globalisation, education in India is no longer just a teacher talking to a bunch of students in a classroom. With more than 370 million internet users and hundreds of local as well as global business tycoons willing to invest in the future of education, online education in India has picked up pace. In fact, the e-learning market in the country is estimated to be worth more than $3 billion.
Well, all of this essentially says that there is going to be a big future of online education in India, but it definitely has a long way to go.More details u get please click that link Online education has a bright future in India.

Daniel Conn is studying for a part-time degree from the OU. Photograph: Paul Burroughs

Daniel Conn left school at 18 and started work as an administrator for Mercedes-Benz near his home in Brighton. He soon wished he hadn't spurned the idea of going to university and began investigating Open University (OU) courses, but he never quite found the courage to apply.
Then he discovered the OU's OpenLearn website, which offers 650 Open University study units free online. After working his way through four in computing and maths (and doing an online Harvard University course on the side) he thought he might as well get a qualification.
Now approaching 30, he is studying for a part-time OU degree in computing, which he hopes to finish in 2015.
"The OpenLearn materials give you the gist of what the course is about and whether you can do it," he says. "It definitely gave me a lot of confidence."
The OU is not the only university that has started offering courses free online. Over the past couple of years increasing numbers of universities across Europe and the US have set up web-based resources known as Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). These MOOCs make recorded lectures, course materials and academic discussion forums freely available to anyone who wants to use them.
Jonathan Kydd, dean of the University of London International Programmes, which last month began offering free courses in psychology, computer programming and law through the US online education provider Coursera, says the involvement of top-rated institutions such as Stanford and Harvard has made this kind of free distance learning particularly appealing.
"You are going to inspire students because they are going to get [access to] a high proportion of people who are household names and who are both great researchers and great teachers," he says.
Universities use free courses not only as a shop window for the other courses they offer, but also as a way of sharing good practice with other institutions, experimenting with new technology and of seeing what does and doesn't work in distance education, Kydd says.
This is important because the availability of higher bandwidths and progress in developing effective systems of online assessment, combined with increasing demand, means that paid-for distance learning is also booming.
According to the Higher Education Statistics Agency, the number of distance learning students registered at UK institutions grew from 238,800 in 2006/07, to 271,445 in 2010/11.
Tony Hopwood, chief assessor for the Open and Distance Learning Quality Council, says the increase is particularly marked in the university sector, which is now competing with dedicated distance learning organisations.
Gráinne Conole, professor of learning innovation at the University of Leicester, says this is out of necessity. "We know worldwide that bricks and mortar universities don't have the capacity to deal with the number of students there are going to be in future, particularly in places like India and China, so online learning has to be the way to go."
The University of Derby is one institution to recognise this, setting up a separate department to focus on online distance learning students with academic systems and tutors dedicated to their specific needs.
Joy Rickard, who is studying for an undergraduate certificate in educational psychology at Derby from her home near Bath, says she feels the benefits. For her, distance learning means the flexibility to look after her two young children and work part-time in a school while studying alongside a global student cohort.
"I have met some people online who are doing fascinating things all over the world, which wouldn't have happened if I was attending in person," she says.
Certainly online learning deepens the pool of potential students. Kydd says London University's International Programmes distance learning model, which allows students to take courses over time and pay incrementally, makes it affordable for students from Africa who would otherwise never be able to take a degree.
And the University of Leicester is about to launch an MSc in security, conflict and international development, designed to meet the needs of international development workers deployed in post-conflict countries, who would normally find study impossible. Because access to the internet can be tricky in such countries, the students receive an iPad on which they download the course app and related ebooks, all accessible without an internet connection. They can then download other materials when they find a Wi-Fi connection.
Campus life
New courses run by Plymouth University are similarly designed for hard-to-reach students. The university is offering undergraduate and postgraduate diplomas, and master's-level programmes in hydrography for students working on oil rigs and survey vessels, sometimes thousands of miles from the nearest university.
But what about missing out on campus life? Rickard, who studied graphic design at the University of Wales, Newport before having children, says she feels she has "done" student life and is now more interested in developing a career. Conn, who has just started a full-time job as a technology developer off the back of his studies, says his local OU student union and online forums keep him happy.
"You don't feel like you're on your own," he says. "The only thing I'm missing is living in a rundown squat for a couple of years and leaving with masses of debt."

Options Abound for Free Online Education Programs

2012-10-18T08:06:00.000-07:00

New online programs feature courses from top-ranked universities.

In the past, students who aspired to attend a top-ranked university would need a high GPA, strong test scores, and the resources to fund an education.
Now, with video streaming tools, videoconferencing programs, and the ability to share and edit documents online, anyone with an Internet connection can gain access to college- and graduate-level education.
In recent years, universities have used the Web to post lectures online for users to watch at no cost. In 2006, Salman Khan created Khan Academy, a nonprofit education organization that posts YouTube "micro-lectures" on topics ranging from mathematics to art history.
[See how colleges have utilized YouTube.]
But still the public clamored for more organized online programs, notes Eren Bali, CEO and cofounder of Udemy, an online education provider.
"We realized that people are looking for structured content even though there are heaps of content available [online]," he says. "You need some guidance and a community."
For students interested in free online education programs, here are three that offer structured courses.
1. Coursera: Professors at Stanford University offered a series of free computer science courses online in fall 2011. Hundreds of thousands of students enrolled, far exceeding traditional enrollments, notes Andrew Ng, a cofounder of Coursera and a professor at Stanford who taught a machine learning course during the experiment.
"I normally teach a 400-student class," says Ng, who instructed more than 100,000 students through the online course. "To reach a comparable size audience, I'd have to teach my normal class for 250 years."
[Discover the growth and popularity of online education.]
Motivated by the experiment's success, Ng and Daphne Koller, a Stanford professor who also taught a free online course, founded Coursera, an online platform that offers structured courses from prestigious universities at no cost to students. The service—which features professors from Princeton University, University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania, and Stanford—has topped a million enrollments since launching in March.
"Today's top universities offer an amazing education to a miniscule fraction of the population," Ng says. "We'd like to see a future where top schools are teaching not just thousands of students, but millions."
Within a course, video lectures are broken into segments with online quizzes to ensure students understand the material. Assignments are computer graded currently but, Koller notes, peer grading will soon be implemented for courses that may have more open-ended questions and answers.
Students can also engage in Q&A forums, where other users vote a question up or down based on its value and quality.
"I have checked into the discussion forums to see if people had the same questions as me and found that they almost always did," says Yoav Bergner, a Coursera user who is completing postdoctoral research at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "There were really inspiring, high-level discussions happening from students all over the world."

Digital dawn: open online learning is just beginning

Universities are traditionally seen as exclusive institutions for the few, not the many. But that is changing as a new wave of online courses throws open the doors of academia to all.
Led by world renowned American institutions like MIT and Harvard, this push to democratise learning is being taken up in Australia too.

A new way of learning

In contrast to traditional higher education, which closes learning off from the world, open learning is transparent and accessible to anyone with internet access.
Such openness could do a lot to improve standards at universities whose business models are driven by bums on seats, rather than mastery of a given subject.
It might also lift the morale of academia. Academics who are in control of what they teach, and who teach students who seek them out, may regain their professional freedom.
Around 7,000 online students recently earned the first certificates awarded by MIT and Harvard through their Edx partnership. That’s more than twice the number of degrees that MIT awarded at this year’s commencement.
Another 147,596 observers signed up to marvel at what an MIT course is really like. Substantially greater numbers are expected for the spring course offerings.
Their first MIT course, Circuits and Electronics, was tough. University level maths and physics were prerequisites, and the exam would give many nosebleeds.
But the high standards mean graduates are justly proud of the MIT and Harvard brands on their certificates.

New kinds of learning

Sal Khan, founder of the non-profit education provider Khan Academy, said in his recent MIT commencement address:

“The revolutions of our generation — in business, education, social structure and even politics — are not being catalysed by generals or politicians, but by highly empowered individuals like yourselves. [They] can see with clarity how the assumptions of previous generations no longer apply.”

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are in an experimentation phase. The spectrum ranges from the talking head, through to student centred learning, to the largest ones using best practice, research based instruction. Apart from being open and massive, MOOCs differ from traditional open university courses in the branding, and in the low cost, high flexibility delivery models.
Key innovations of the new wave of American MOOCs include the Khan Style Video, and the simulation lab. The Khan Style Video creates a remarkable intimacy between teacher and student.
The simulation lab is an environment in which exploration is encouraged, risks can be taken, and mistakes are forgiven. If you think this sounds too much like fun, remember that the pilots on your next flight may have qualified in a simulator.

The next step

MOOCs will take off, according to Udacity and Edx, once their student behaviour databases enable learning feedback cycles. The promise of datamining learning is one of the reasons it is researchers, and research universities, that are leading the new wave.
Harvard President Drew Faust said:

“Harvard and MIT will use these new technologies and the research they will make possible to lead the direction of online learning in a way that benefits our students, our peers, and people across the nation and the globe …”

Edx builds on the MIT OpenCourseWare project. It adds purpose designed best practice learning strategies, student community, labs, assessment, and certification.
But a pivotal unknown is how employers will use this certification. Will they favour traditional degrees? How will they use the information in the MOOC databases about an individual’s capabilities and mastery?

A technological wave

Stanford University President John Hennessy told his colleagues that when it comes to higher education: “There is a tsunami coming”.
Let’s hope not. Nevertheless, panic over MOOCs seems to have been a factor in a recent bizarre series of events at the University of Virginia in which the Board fired and then rehired the University President.
Universities are trying to understand whether MOOCs are just healthy competition or are a disruptive innovation. Higher education would not be the first sector to be hit by a bigger and faster technological wave than it expected. If the tsunami hits, the aftermath might follow the established pattern of disruptive innovation; the organisations that do well will either serve small, high-value markets, or develop new low cost models with broad reach.
Or perhaps achieve both, like the Minerva Project is attempting to with its $25 million in venture capital. Indeed, disruptive innovation case studies suggest the advantage lies with independent spin-offs that are free of regulation and legacy assumptions.

Australian leaders

According to The Australian, Deakin University plans to embed MOOCs in their curriculum. Announcing their “cloud learning” strategy the Vice Chancellor said:

“The universities which continue to succeed will be those which embed the opportunities of the internet in their culture and in the way they enhance the student experience.”

Is Deakin’s strategic plan to become a consumer of content produced by others? If so, how will this affect the roles of the teaching academics? Perhaps course creators will position themselves as independent professional consultants, analogous to how many young researchers on fellowships already find themselves.
In the absence of a crystal ball, it’s unclear where the treasure and effort being expended will leave higher education once the dust settles. In places where higher education is publicly funded, new government policies will be required to promote innovation. Since quantity has low marginal cost, perhaps the new wave will reorient policies towards quality.
Edx has $60 million in the bank, and the funding taps are wide open: the Gates Foundation has awarded them $1 million to develop flipped classroom courses for colleges serving low income students. The Foundation is also helping the online, tuition-free University of the People gain accreditation.

The future higher education

Is the future of higher education one dominated by international teaching stars providing cutting-edge courses to whoever wants them?
For learning requiring quality personal interactions, perhaps not. But at the low value end of the spectrum, for example where large lecture classes are the norm, it’s perhaps just a matter of time.
Why learn from the best in your country, when you can learn from the best in the world for a fraction of the cost? It’s no contest.
One thing is clear – this will not go away. The key players include great universities committed to innovation on the planetary scale. They dream of reaching a billion students. The new wave is already breaking over universities with lesser agendas, and will continue to for decades.

Online PhD Programs & Doctoral Degrees

A doctoral degree – sometimes referred to as a doctorate or doctorate degree – is the final degree in the hierarchy of academic degrees awarded by post secondary educational institutions. Many PhD courses and doctorates are designed to qualify you to practice a particular profession, such as medicine. Doctoral degree programs can take anywhere from three to ten years of postgraduate study, and also usually require that you submit and defend an original thesis.

Types of Online Masters Degrees & Online Masters Programs

You can earn a master's degree online or you can attend a traditional on-campus master's program. If you decide to pursue a master’s there are literally hundreds of institutions ready to help you achieve your goal. Most distance learning students return to their careers upon completing their online master’s degree, but a few decide to continue their education with additional online programs. Your advanced degree is a wise investment in either case; depending on the type of master’s program you attend, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that you can earn up to $26,000 more each year when compared to someone who holds only a bachelor’s degree.
Many online master’s degrees fall into the “arts” or “sciences” categories, as is typical for associate’s and bachelor’s degrees. However, a sizable minority do not; instead, your particular area of study can denote what type of master’s degree you earn. A Master of Business Administration (MBA) is the most common example of a degree named in this way, but others include the Master of Criminal Justice (MCJ) and Master of Education (MEd).

Master of Arts (MA)degrees are commonly awarded for completing master’s-level study in fields such as the humanities or social sciences.
Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees are awarded for completing master’s-level study in business administration. MBA degrees and accredited AACSB MBA programs are very popular and are often considered indispensable if you want to rise to an executive position.
Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degrees are similar to MA degrees, but are awarded for completing master’s-level study in a fine arts field such as creative writing or theater.
Master of Science (MS) degrees are commonly awarded for completing master’s-level study in a natural science field like biology or physics.
