Shahid Afridi has issued a shock apology over the alleged "spot-fixing" scandal which has rocked cricket.

The Pakistan One-day captain said "sorry" on behalf of the three players caught up in the ugly Lord's controversy.

Pakistan captain Butt and bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir were charged by the ICC under their anti-corruption code and provisionally suspended a f t e r a l l e g at i o n s o f deliberately bowling "no balls" in the Fourth Test.

The players - dropped for the rest of the tour - were released without charge by police after being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation into whether they accepted money from agent and businessman Mazhar Majeed.

Until yesterday, the Pakistanis have refused to condemn the players, insisting they are innocent until proven guilty.

And they have even tried to claim the whole saga a being a set-up.

But, as Pakistan prepared for today's first Twenty20 clash with England in Cardiff, Afridi revealed the first sign of remorse.

He insisted: "It is very bad news. On behalf of the players, I want to say sorry to cricket lovers in all cricketing nations.

"People are very upset and despondent.

"The only thing we can do now is play good cricket.

"That's all we can do.

"I've told the boys 'don't read the newspapers'.

"I know they are very upset."

Howeve r, t h e tourists were rocked last night by the allgeation from Yasir Hameed that match-fixing had been going on throughout their visit to England this summer.

Yasir, 32, played in the third Test at The Oval. He claimed last night: "It makes me angry because I'm playing my best and they are trying to lose.

"They've been caught. Only the ones that get caught are branded crooks."

He added: "They were doing it in almost every match.

"God knows what they were up to. Scotland Yard was after them for ages."

Pakistan coach Waqar Younis revealed Butt, Asif and Amir could still be a part of future Pakistan squads, insisting: "I am not sure what is going to happen, but if they are cleared they will always be welcome back. It is a big loss to the Pakistan cricket team. It's been a hard week for us. It's has been very difficult to re-focus them again.

"The support staff and Shahid Afridi are working very hard to stop people thinking about anything else.

"It is pretty sad what has happened and has been tough on everyone, not just me but the entire team, management and back home.

"We must now try and win the series so that it will take away some of the sadness from the team and the country. It's important the boys charge up now and deliver.

"We have plenty of security around. And we are trying to make sure the players don't mix with any strangers around the hotel because the situation is pretty bad.

"We want them to try to sort it out and forget what happened."

CROYDON ATHLETIC FC - owned by Mazhar Majeed, the man at the centre of the spot-fixing scandal - last night announced changes to their managerial team.

A statement on the club's website revealed that manager Tom O'Shea and assistant Neil Smith have left with immedate effect.

Pakistan match-fixing claims: player 'hid mobile phone in his helmet while waiting to bat'

A Pakistan player concealed a mobile phone inside the helmet he was wearing as he waited to bat during a recent international match, one of his team-mates has alleged.

The use of mobile phones by players is strictly forbidden anywhere on the ground during an international match under ICC regulations designed to prevent communication between match-fixers and players.

The former Test cricketer, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals, said he rang the ACSU hotline after being told recently of the claim by the current Pakistan player. The phone was hidden inside the right earpiece of the helmet of the player waiting to bat, he alleged.

Afridi issues shock apology "My reaction was one of disbelief," the former Test cricketer said on Saturday. "I had reason to suspect things were going on in international cricket, and you never had total confidence in certain games because of the rumours about match fixing and spot fixing. But when I was told about this player with the mobile inside his helmet, I was flabbergasted."

This revelation comes at the end of perhaps the most disturbing week cricket has seen in England, following last Sunday's newspaper allegations of spot fixing by three Pakistan players in the Lord's Test. Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif were all provisionally suspended by the ICC on Thursday evening after allegations of bowling deliberate no-balls in the fourth Test between England and Pakistan. They were questioned by police in London on Friday but were released without charge.

This afternoon the first of two Twenty20 internationals between England and Pakistan is due to take place in Cardiff. But officials from the ICC and the England and Wales Cricket Board were braced for further revelations last night by the News of the World which might put the series in jeopardy.

On Saturday, the Pakistan one-day captain, Shahid Afridi, apologised on behalf of Butt, Asif and Amir. "I think it is very bad news," he said in Cardiff. "I think on behalf of these players – I know they are not in this series – but on behalf of these boys I want to say sorry." He added that he had not spoken to them and had not asked if he could apologise on their behalf.

Meanwhile, the legal adviser of the Pakistan Cricket Board says the three suspended players have acknowledged the businessman at the centre of the fixing claims, Mazhar Majeed, is their agent – but have denied knowledge of any alleged wrongdoing by him. The News of the World accused Majeed last weekend of accepting money in exchange for organising Asif and Amir to bowl no-balls.

PCB legal adviser Tafazzul Rizvi also said on Saturday that the three would have to fight their cases on their own if they appeal against their suspension.

Pakistani Cricket Team Faces Allegations of Match-Fixing

British police have arrested London-based sports agent Mazhar Majeed on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud bookmakers.

The arrest came after the British newspaper, News of the World, reported that it had filmed its reporters posing as representatives of a gambling cartel paying Majeed to fix a match.

The paper said it gave him $230,000 for arranging to have blatant no-balls bowled at specific times during play between England and Pakistan. Records show that occurred when two bowlers, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif, delivered three deliberate no-balls against England on Thursday and Friday.

Amir, Asif and team captain Salman Butt were among the Pakistani players questioned by police late Saturday. The players refused to answer questions from reporters.

The fourth day of the match went ahead Sunday and England's win gave it the four-test series, 3-1.

Majeed and his brother Azhar are agents who represent a number of Pakistani players. Cricinfo.com reports that Pakistani players were warned ahead of the England tour not to meet the Azhars because of their suspicious activities.

Members of the International Cricket Council's Anti-Corruption Union left their headquarters in Dubai to travel to London to look into the allegations.

Cricket is the most popular sport in South Asia but allegations of match-fixing have surrounded the sport for years.

A fourth member of the Pakistan squad is being investigated by the International Cricket Council over match-fixing allegations, it is claimed in Sunday's News of the World.

However, Hameed on Saturday night denied that he had given an interview to the News of the World.

The paper, which on Sunday prints full details of an investigation into fixing that began in January, last week accused Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Amir and Salman Butt of spot-fixing in last month’s Lord’s Test between England and Pakistan. However, for legal reasons the paper is not naming the fourth player being investigated by the ICC.

The Metropolitan Police, which has questioned Asif, Amir and Butt, said it was not investigating a fourth player.

Separately, it has been reported that Pakistan wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal has been asked by the ICC to provide information, although not in relation to the recent Lord’s Test.

Asif, Amir and Butt, who were last week suspended by cricket’s world governing body, face 23 ICC charges between them with each player's charges running to six pages, the News of the World claims.

The ICC was on Saturday night unable to confirm or deny the latest report. “We cannot discuss ongoing investigations,” a spokesman said.

According to the paper, investigators have recovered between £10,000 and £15,000 in marked News of the World notes from the hotel room of Butt, the Pakistan captain.

The paper also claims it has further evidence that the meeting with alleged fixer Mazhar Majeed took place before the no-balls at the centre of the fixing allegations — two delivered by Amir in the Lord’s Test and one by Asif — had been bowled. The claim follows suggestions from the Pakistan High Commissioner that the players had been set up.

All four tainted players, Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Amir and Kamran Akmal were with the team, while the decision for their selection for the match would be taken later.On the other hand players Yasir Hameed, Tanveer Ahmed and Imran Farhat who were released after the test series have left for home and Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Hafeez would join national team in Taunton.Pakistan will play a practice match at Taunton in west England on Thursday and then face two Twenty20 matches and five one-day games against England starting in Cardiff on Sunday.

ICC to wait for police report before taking action

MUMBAI: International Cricket Council President Sharad Pawar on Monday said the allegations of 'spot-fixing' and 'match-fixing' against Pakistani cricketers are very serious but the ICC would wait for a report from the police in London before deciding on its course of action.

"Until and unless the process of investigation is over, it is improper for me to react," Pawar told reporters here.

"We have discussed it within the ICC and have decided that let us wait for the police's investigation report. After that we have to take a viewpoint of the two Board, the Pakistan Cricket Board and the England and Wales Cricket Board," he added.

Reacting to the scandal, which implicates captain Salman Butt, pacers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamir, wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal and three other unnamed players, Pawar said he does not make comments on what is essentially a media report.

"There is a conference call that I will be attending in which somebody from the ECB and the PCB would be there," he said.

Asked about the Indian bookies about whom Majeed talks about in the sting operation, Pawar said he was not aware of this.

"I don't know. The BCCI have to take a view on that. The BCCI is one of our member and I am sure if any serious matter is there, the BCCI will take cognizance of this," he said.

"I can't come to a conclusion based on a video," he reasoned.

Angry Pakistanis pelt donkeys in protest at fixing

KARACHI: Protesters in Lahore slapped donkeys with shoes and pelted them with rotten tomatoes on Monday to vent their anger at the latest Pakistani cricket fixing scandal.
Protesters led a procession of donkeys with the names of players accused of taking bribes to fix incidents during the fourth test against England stuck on the foreheads of the animals.
“These players have let us and the country down. We are already facing so many problems because of the floods and terrorism and they took away our one source of happiness,” a protester screamed at a television channel.
Television pictures also showed Pakistanis pelting their team bus with rotten vegetables when it arrived at Lord's in London on Sunday.

ISLAMABAD: A parliamentary sports committee in Pakistan on Monday asked the government to dissolve the country's cricket board in the latest corruption scandal to hit the sport.
Seven Pakistan national team players are facing a police investigation over a match-fixing scandal which surfaced on Sunday in British tabloid the News of the World.
“Our committee has unanimously recommended to dissolve the Pakistan Cricket Board and if it is not done we will collectively resign from this committee,” said Iqbal Mohammad Ali, chief of the committee in parliament's lower house.
Pakistan's national team have remained on tour in England since the scandal broke on Sunday, but are under pressure to cancel the rest of the planned matches.
“We also demand that the government call back the team's manager and coaches immediately and send new management (to England) to handle the crisis,” Ali told reporters outside Parliament House.
The standing committee on sports has repeatedly sought the removal of the cricket board's chief, Ijaz Butt, in recommendations to President Asif Zardari for mismanagement and the poor performance of the national team.
But Zardari, who is a patron of the board by virtue of his office, has ignored the demand.
Ali said the parliamentary committee would convene a special meeting on the issue of match-fixing and would hold its own inquiry into the controversy.

LONDON: The man at the centre of an alleged betting scam involving the Pakistan cricket team was out on bail Monday as police, governments and authorities probed the scandal rocking the sport.
Mazhar Majeed, 35, was released from custody having been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud bookmakers, following a newspaper's claim that he took money in return for exact details on no-balls in the Lord's Test match between England and Pakistan.
The allegations have caused uproar in Pakistan and shaken a sport that prides itself on being considered synonymous with fair play.
British police bailed Majeed without charge late Sunday.
“A 35-year-old man has been bailed until a date in the future,” a Scotland Yard spokesman told AFP.
He said the police would not be discussing the date or his bail conditions.
Scotland Yard detectives have also grilled Pakistan captain Salman Butt and two of their star strike bowlers Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif in their investigation.
Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said the claims “have bowed our heads in shame”, as he launched an investigation.
The News of the World newspaper said it paid Majeed 150,000 pounds (230,000 dollars, 185,000 euros) in return for advance details about the timing of three no-balls in the fourth and final Test, which England won on Sunday to take the series 3-1.
The report said Aamer and Asif delivered blatant no-balls at the exact points in the match indicated by the alleged middleman.
Pakistan team manager Yawar Saeed said detectives had on Saturday visited the team's hotel, where Butt and the bowlers had been interviewed about the allegations.
All three gave statements to the police, who took away their mobile phones.
Scotland Yard said they could not discuss persons interviewed as part of an inquiry.
The News of the World published a photograph, video and audio of its encounters with Majeed. He was pictured counting wads of banknotes given to him by a reporter posing as a front man for a betting syndicate.
The Lord's Test was played to a finish Sunday, but unusually, the post-match presentation ceremony did not take place on the outfield but was moved inside the pavilion.
During the ceremony, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chairman Giles Clarke refused to shake Aamer's hand when presenting the player with the Pakistan Man of the Series award and a cheque for 4,000 pounds.
Despite the allegations, Saeed denied that Pakistani cricket was “institutionally corrupt”.
“I would not like to say that,” he said. “Yes, one has heard and one has read (allegations), but I would not like to go that far.” A defiant Butt insisted he would not resign the Test team captaincy over the claims.
“Anybody can stand out and say anything about you, that doesn't make them true,” he said.
In Pakistan, Gilani said a probe was under way.
“The latest fixing allegations have bowed our heads in shame,” the prime minister told reporters in his home town of Multan.
“I have ordered a thorough inquiry into these allegations so that action could be taken against those who are proven guilty.” President Asif Ali Zardari has expressed his disappointment at the claims and is being informed of developments.
The country's federal sports minister Ijaz Jakhrani promised that any players found guilty would be severely punished.
If wrongdoing was proven, “all the players involved must forget to play for Pakistan in future,” he said.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said they had requested access to the ongoing investigation.
The no-balls at the centre of the claims were bowled on Thursday and Friday.
Pakistan's players now face an awkward time as they must remain in England for a series of one-day matches.
“As far as I am concerned the one-day series is on,” Saeed said.
Former Pakistan captain Imran Khan said cricket in Pakistan must not be allowed to be dragged down by corrupt players.
“Why should Pakistan cricket suffer if some players have indulged in a crime?” he told Britain's ITV television.
“The people who are found guilty should be removed from the team and replaced and should be punished as an example.” Ramiz Raja, the former Pakistan captain and later PCB chief executive, wrote in The Daily Telegraph newspaper Monday: “It is a disaster for cricket...those players must now be dealt with severely.
“For them to do it at Lord's, the Mecca of cricket, brings extreme shame and sadness.” The latest allegations are a further blow to cricket in Pakistan, already at a low ebb with home matches ruled out due to terrorism fears.

Canadian teen heart-throb Justin Bieber is most searched person on the internet, says Ask Jeeves.
The search engine revealed Bieber, who is just 16, had beaten Lady Gaga to the position and is being searched three times more than David Beckham and 29 times more than US President Barack Obama.
"The Bieber is an online sensation so it's fitting he now rules the search engine world too," said Nadia Kelly from Ask Jeeves.
The news comes just days after hackers exploited a flaw in video-sharing site YouTube which allowed them to redirect web users searching for Bieber's music videos to sites containing adult material.

The Bloom Energy Server (commonly referred to as the Bloom Box) is a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) made by Bloom Energy, of Sunnyvale, California, that uses liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons (such as gasoline, diesel or propane[1] produced from fossil or bio sources) to generate electricity on the site where it will be used; Bloom Energy representatives assert that it is at least as efficient as a traditional large-scale coal power station.[2][3] According to the company, a single cell (one 100mm × 100mm metal alloy plate between two ceramic layers) generates 25 watts.[4]
The Bloom Energy Server uses thin white ceramic plates (100mm × 100mm)[5] which are claimed to be made from "beach sand" but are in fact scandia stabilized zirconia ScSZ. Each ceramic plate is coated with a green Nickel oxide[disambiguation needed] -based ink on one side (anode) and another black (probably Lanthanum strontium manganite) ink on the other side (cathode).[6] According to the San Jose Mercury News, "Bloom's secret technology apparently lies in the proprietary green ink that acts as the anode and the black ink that acts as the cathode--" but in fact these materials are widely known in the field of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Wired reports that the secret ingredient may be yttria-stabilized zirconia based upon a 2006 patent filing (7,572,530) that was granted to Bloom in 2009; but this material is also one of the most common electrolyte materials in the field.[7]. US Patent Application Publication US 2008/0261099 A1 which is assigned to Bloom Energy Corporation suggests that the secret ingredient is scandia stabilized zirconia ScSZ. ScSZ has a higher conductivity than YSZ at lower temperatures which provides greater efficiency and higher reliability when used as an electrolyte in SOFC applications. Scandia is scandium oxide (Sc3O2) which is a very scarce rare earth metal oxide that is sold between US$1400 to US$2000 per kilogram in 99.9% form. Current annual world wide production of scandium is less than 2000 kilogram and most of the 5000 kilogram used annually is sourced from limited former Soviet era stock piles.
To save money, the Bloom Energy Server uses inexpensive metal alloy plates for electric conductance between the two ceramic fast ion conductor plates. In lower temperature fuel cells, platinum is required at the cathode.[6]
According to the board of Bloom Energy, the technology works.[4][8] A Guardian report on the story added, "But industry watchers say they remain unsure exactly how it works."[4]

Bloom Energy is the company that develops, builds, installs Bloom Energy Servers.[9] The company, started in 2002 by CEO K.R. Sridhar,[9] is one of 26 named a 2010 Tech Pioneer by the World Economic Forum.[10]

In October 2001, Sridhar had a meeting with John Doerr from the large venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins.[11] Sridhar was asking for more than $100 million to start the company. Bloom Energy has received $400 million of start-up funding from venture capitalists, including Kleiner Perkins[6] and Vinod Khosla.[12]
The company, originally called Ion America, was renamed to Bloom Energy in 2006.[13]
Sridhar credited his nine-year-old son for the name, saying that his son believed jobs, lives, environment and children would bloom.[14] One of the celebrities appearing at the product launch was Michael R. Bloomberg, who appeared by video link.[15] Bloomberg's business news network covered the event, but was attributed every statement to "Bloom Energy".[16]
The CEO gave a media interview (to Fortune Magazine) for the first time in 2010, eight years after founding the company, because of pressure from his customers.[9] A few days later he allowed a journalist (Lesley Stahl of the CBS News program 60 Minutes) to see the factory for the first time.[17] On February 24, 2010, the company held its first press conference.[13]

The current cost of each hand-made 100 kW Bloom Energy Server is $700,000–800,000. In the next stage, which will likely be mass production of home-sized units, Sridhar hopes to more than halve the cost of each home sized Bloom server to under $3000.[6] Bloom estimates the size of a home sized server as 1 kilowatt, although cNet News reports critical estimates recommend 5 kW capacity for a residence.[18]
The capital costs according to NewsWeek magazine is $7–8 per watt. [2]

On 24 February 2010, Sridhar told Todd Woody of The New York Times that his devices are making electricity for 8–10 cents/kWh using natural gas, which is cheaper than today's electricity prices in some parts of the United States, such as California.[19][20] Twenty percent of the Bloom Energy Server cost savings depend upon avoiding transfer losses that result from energy grid use.[18]
Bloom Energy is developing Power Purchase Agreements to sell the electricity produced by the boxes, rather than sell the boxes themselves, in order to address customers' fears about box maintenance, reliability and servicing costs.[17]
Fifteen percent of the power at eBay is created with Bloom technology; after tax incentives that paid half the cost eBay expects "a three-year payback period" for the remaining half, based on California's $0.14/kWh cost of commercial electricity.[21]

The company says that its first 100 kW Bloom Energy Servers were shipped to Google in July 2008.[22] Four such servers were installed at Google's headquarters in Mountain View, California, which was Bloom Energy's first customer.[17] Another installation is for five boxes[1] to make up to 500 kW at eBay headquarters in San Jose, California.[17] Bloom Energy states that their customers include Staples (300 kW - December 2008),[23] Walmart (800 kW - January 2010),[24] FedEx (500 kW),[25] The Coca-Cola Company (500 kW)[26] and Bank of America (500 kW).[27][28] Each of these installations (current or planned) is located in California. Most use either biogas or solar energy inputs.

Writing for a Wall Street Journal blog, Rebecca Smith and Jim Carlton speculated that portable Bloom Energy Servers could be used instead of traditional generators by the armed forces.[29] Sridhar plans to install Bloom Energy Servers in third world nations.[15] Ex-Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Colin Powell, now a Bloom Energy board member, said the Bloom Energy generators could be useful to the military because they are lighter, more efficient, and generate less heat than what the military uses now.[30]

According to BBC tech blogger Maggie Shiels, Bloom Energy is "being very coy and playful about what it will reveal to the press".[31] She quotes Michael Kanellos of Greentech Media regarding the general scope and feasibility of Bloom Energy's plans: fuel cells are not new technology and in order to succeed in the marketplace the Bloom Energy Server would need to be cheaper than existing types of renewable energy.[31] If Bloom Energy can develop such a technology, Kanellos predicts that established energy firms such as General Electric would derive most of the profits due to greater ability to manufacture and market a product.[31] Jacob Grose, senior analyst at Lux Research told Fortune Magazine that he doubts Dr. Sridhar has come up with a way of making these ceramic fuel cells cheaply.[9]
Bloom Energy Server technology is based upon stacking small fuel cells which operate in concert.[5][13] Bloom Energy has made a technological advance by developing stacked fuel cells where individual plates expand and contract at the same rate at high temperatures.[5] Scott Samuelsen of the University of California, Irvine National Fuel Cell Research Center questions how long the reliable operational life of Bloom Servers will be. "At this point, Bloom has excellent potential, but they have yet to demonstrate that they've met the bars of reliability."[13] Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory expert Michael Tucker told the San Jose Mercury News, "Because they operate at high temperatures, they can accept other fuels like natural gas and methane, and that's an enormous advantage... The disadvantage is that they can shatter as they are heating or cooling."[13]
John Doerr, a venture capitalist, who has a large investment in the company, asserts that the Bloom Energy Server is cheaper and cleaner than the grid.[1][32] An expert at Gerson Lehrman Group, wrote that, given today's electricity transmission losses of about 7% and utility size gas fired power stations efficiency of 26-48%, the Bloom Energy Server is up to twice as efficient as a gas fired power station, but no less efficient than one.[2] In a followup story entitled "Bloom Box: Segway or savior?" Fortune noted on 24 February 2010 that "Bloom has still not released numbers about how much the Bloom Box costs to operate per kilowatt hour" and estimates that natural gas rather than bio-gas will be the primary source of fuel for Bloom Energy Servers.[33] Jonathan Fahey of Forbes comments:
Are we really falling for this again? Every clean tech company on the planet says it can produce clean energy cheaply, yet not a single one can. Government subsidies or mandates keep the entire worldwide industry afloat... Hand it to Bloom, the company has managed to tap into the hype machine like no other clean tech company in memory."[34]

Current gas fired power stations convert chemical energy to thermal energy to mechanical energy to electrical energy. A modern combined cycle gas turbine power plant (CCGT) can reach 55-58% overall cycle efficiency. Sridhar says Bloom Boxes convert chemical energy to electrical energy in one step, and are more fuel efficient than current gas fired power stations and also reduce transmission/distribution losses by producing power where it is used.[35]
Sridhar also said the boxes will have a 10 year life span.[20] The CEO of eBay says Bloom Energy Servers have saved the company $100,000 in electricity bills since they were installed in mid-2009,[6] yet Paul Keegan of Fortune calls that figure "meaningless without the details to see how he got there."[33]

A Gerson Lehrman Group analyst wrote that GE dismantled its fuel cell group five years ago and Siemens have almost dismantled theirs.[2] United Technologies is the only large conglomerate that has fuel cell technology that could compete with Bloom Energy.[2] Toshiba only has technology to provide energy for a small device, not a neighborhood.[2]
Katie Fehrenbacher of Business Week reports that Sprint Nextel owns 15 patents on hydrogen fuel cells and is using 250 fuel cells to provide backup power for its operations.[36] Sprint has been using fuel cell power since 2005.[36] Last year Sprint's fuel cell program received a grant of over $7 million from the United States Department of Energy.[36] The Sprint program has partnered with ReliOn and Altergy for fuel cell manufacture, and with Air Products as a hydrogen supplier.[36] Business Week reported that a German fuel cell firm called P21, which is based in Munich, has been working on similar projects to supply backup power for cellular operations.[36] United Technologies makes fuel cells costing $4,500 per kilowatt.
In October 2009 the Department of Energy awarded nearly $25 million in grants for research and development of solar fuels, which Michael Kannelos notes in Wired may be similar technology to the solar cells in Sridhar's description of the Bloom Energy Server.[7][37] Department of Energy grant recipients included a variety of startup companies and universities.[37]
According to an article in NewScientist, there is a claim stating the Bloom Box is "electrolyte-supported" and based on that, there are at least two well-established companies, Topsoe Fuel Cell[3] and Ceres Power, already rolling out products with more advanced non-electrolyte-supported cells. Ceres having a four-year program to install 37,500 units in the homes of customers of the UK's British Gas[disambiguation needed]. [38]
Ballard Power's comparably scaled products are based on proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Ballard's 150 kW units are intended for mobile applications such as municipal buses,[39] while their larger 1 MW stationary systems are configured from banks of 11 kW building blocks.[40]
Another competitor that already has product in-market in Europe and Australia is Ceramic Fuel Cells [41], with an efficiency of 60% for the power-only units, these fuel cells are based on proven technology spun off from Australia's CSIRO.

A power plant for the home

Those two blocks can power the average high-consumption American home -- one block can power the average European home. At least that's the claim being made by K.R. Sridhar, founder of Bloom Energy, on 60 Minutes last night. The original technology comes from an oxygen generator meant for a scrapped NASA Mars program that's been converted, with the help of an estimated $400 million in private funding, into a fuel cell. Bloom's design feeds oxygen into one side of a cell while fuel (natural gas, bio gas from landfill waste, solar, etc) is supplied to the other side to provide the chemical reaction required for power. The cells themselves are inexpensive ceramic disks painted with a secret green "ink" on one side and a black "ink" on the other. The disks are separated by a cheap metal alloy, instead of more precious metals like platinum, and stacked into a cube of varying capabilities -- a stack of 64 can power a small business like Starbucks.Now get this, skeptics: there are already several corporate customers using refrigerator-sized Bloom Boxes. The corporate-sized cells cost $700,000 to $800,000 and are installed at 20 customers you've already heard of including FedEx and Wal-mart -- Google was first to this green energy party, using its Bloom Boxes to power a data center for the last 18 months. Ebay has installed its boxes on the front lawn of its San Jose location. It estimates to receive almost 15% of its energy needs from Bloom, saving about $100,000 since installing its five boxes 9 months ago -- an estimate we assume doesn't factor in the millions Ebay paid for the boxes themselves. Bloom makes about one box a day at the moment and believes that within 5 to 10 years it can drive down the cost to about $3,000 to make it suitable for home use. Sounds awfully aggressive to us. His scene as a confused bellboy in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002) was deleted.

Origins: This item about the drunk-driving death of actor Ben Savage, best known for his portrayal of adolescent Cory Matthews in the TV series Boy Meets World (and younger brother of Fred Savage, star of the nostalgic TV series The Wonder Years) appears to be yet another Internet-spread celebrity death hoax.

Although this blurb claims Ben Savage died on 16 September 2006, there has been no public announcement or media mention of his having passed away or been involved in an accident.

Bennett Joseph Savage (September 13, 1980-September 16, 2006) was an American actor.

Savage was born in Chicago, Illinois of Jewish heritage, to parents Lewis and Joanne Savage. He is the younger brother of Fred Savage, who starred in the hit series The Wonder Years.

Savage is best known for his role as lead character Cory Matthews on the TV sitcom Boy Meets World from 1993 to 2000. He graduated from Stanford University in 2004 with a degree in Political Science and as a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity.

His brother Fred appeared alongside him in one episode of Boy Meets World as well as in the film Little Monsters.

He made a cameo appearance as himself in an episode of the Disney Channel original series Phil of the Future.

Savage is good friends with his former Boy Meets World co-stars Matthew Lawrence, Danielle Fishel and Rider Strong.

Savage was driving intoxicated and crashed his automobile. He went into a coma and never awoke. He died on September 16, 2006.

(Reuters) - Missing U.S. actor Andrew Koenig, who starred in the 198Os television comedy "Growing Pains," killed himself, his distraught father said Thursday after friends located his body in an isolated area of a park.
"Our son took his own life," Walter Koenig, who portrayed Lieutenant Pavel Chekov in the original "Star Trek" TV series, told reporters at a late afternoon news conference.
Andrew Koenig, 41, was last seen on February 14 when he left the Vancouver apartment of a friend he had been visiting, and he was reported missing four days later after his father, in Los Angeles, received a despondent letter from his son.
Koenig's disappearance caused friends including actress Alyssa Milano, actor Kirk Cameron and comedian Sarah Silverman to post comments online or put out statements seeking information on his whereabouts.
On his father's website, Koenig's parents posted a long description of their son, including the fact that he had been suffering from clinical depression when he disappeared.
Walter Koenig Thursday pleaded with people who may be similarly depressed not to ignore the illness and to seek help.
After a week of searching, Walter Koenig said he and Andrew's friends tried a last sweep of Stanley Park -- a large expanse of grass, trees and tourist attractions near the city's downtown -- Thursday morning. Near noon, a friend found his son's body.
Andrew Koenig portrayed Richard "Boner" Stabone on "Growing Pains," but since then he'd had mostly small roles on TV and in the movies. He performed standup comedy at Los Angeles clubs such as The Improv, and had edited and produced films.
Koenig also was active in social causes and was arrested in 2008 for protesting U.S. involvement in the Beijing Olympics.
