As such, we're almost always researching something. Which means we're almost always looking for some place to stash our research where we can find it again. Papers will give you that place on the iPad. Papers is a vertical app targeted at scientific and academic researchers, but it can be valuable to anyone doing any kind of research. It's especially valuable to researchers working across Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) platforms, since Mekentosj makes versions for not only the iPad, but also for the iPhone, iPod touch and Macs.
You'll also find the app useful if you work extensively with documents in the Adobe (Nasdaq: ADBE) PDF format and like to highlight passages, add notes to pages and share those PDFs with others.

Borders eReader Blackberry App

Borders is joining the digital market with their version of an eReader for the Blackberry making them compete with the Barns & Noble eReader app and the Kindle app for the Blackberry. Its great to have the big three releasing free software for the Blackberry increasing the choices of books for Blackberry users.

Using the Borders eReader you can make advance searches in their library of titles and purchase the book using their app. I like the fact their a sellection of free titles which is a great option to try out the app or reading on your phone.

MyLookout is a security software designed for the Blackberry. It offers a wide range of features such as security checks during downloading and checks during installation of applications. There's also scanning for malware in your phone and your memory card.
There's also a backup feature to save all your data just in case you loose your phone. What made me really interested on My Lookout was its AntiTheft features such as the ability to track your phone's location if its stolen, activation of an alarm even when its on silent mode and probably the most useful is the remote data wipe via a special sms message sent to your phone.

Send a download link to your Blackberry: MyLookout

This GPRS monitor for blackberry is the ideal software when you want to keep track of your daily GPRS consumption to see if you might need a bigger or lower GPRS subscription.
Main features of Minimoni:

For devices with SD card the program can write the content of the logbook to SD.

Separate "Traffic watch" to observe the traffic for a limited period of time separately (Testing of an application etc.)

Blackhole is a very simple game that uses your storms accelerometer. You simply tilt your phone and try to roll the ball into the blackhole. It gets complicated with each level when you have to balance multiple balls or objects.

Freerange is a light weight RSS reader for the Blackberry. You can follow upto 10 RSS feeds in your Blackberry. Updating is very fast, as well as browing through your feeds. I like how Freerange integrated Del.ico.us, so you can bookmark all the important articles to your account.

FreeRange Blackberry RSS reader: Link

Upvise - Rss News Reader

Upvise is a suit of applications for your Blackberry. It has the following apps contacts, notebook, RSS news reader, mobile bookmarks, wikipedia mobile and shopping list. What makes Upvise very special is the web base interface which allows you to encode information, bookmarks and enter news feeds. It even has a sync features.
In this article I'm going to talk more on Upvise's RSS reader application. When you download upvise and signup for an account you will get your username and password which you will need to login Upvise's web base interface from your PC or laptop. This is where you enter your new RSS feeds and even bookmarks to your favorite web articles.
All the information you enter in the Upvise's web base interface will automatically be updated to your Upvise software in your Blackberry. Bellow are some feeds I have entered via their web interface and this is how it looks in my Blackberry 8230.

I think the people from Upvise are doing something right with their blackberry software. The fact that its very light and stores information locally( offline mode) makes it faster and doesn't stop you from getting information if you don't have data coverage. I also applaud them for make it works over WIFI, makes it more appealing to people who are stuck with unreasonable data plans.

download Upvise OTA: Blackberry download link

Plusmo has recently been acquired by AT&T and has expanded their collection of Widgets to games and simple clients to major services such as Google News, Digg, Twitter and even major news networks. The sale to AT&T guarantees Plusmo wider support from content providers and may even come presinstalled into futures Phones.

The RSS function has not been remove but expanded you can now create your own combination of RSS from different sites, a directory is available to search on ready made feeds. The

--------------------------------
There's finally a simple solution for getting all that news and online magazines in your Blackberry, by getting a Blackberry RSS reader. Lite feeds has a software for the Blackberry so you can sync and download all the RSS feeds you want. The Lite Feeds RSS Reader does have some limitations but the features available are enough to get you the info you want, currently the service and software is free.

When I started using the Bolt Browser during its Initial Beta release it was already fast but had a some poblems that needed to worked out. But then things started to change with the more recent releases. I can now say the Bolt browser is impressive and very fast. Just enter the URL you want to visit and in a matter of seconds you can see it on your screen.

The bolt browser has some interesting screen features like split screen, where the top portion is the full view mode and the second half is a zoom mode where you can read the text.

I have to admit the Opera browser is still my favorite in terms of usuability and I still love how in aligns the text so you can read everything without side scrolling. But its nice to keep an additional browser in your phone especially since the browser may be one of your most used software.

I have to give credit to the people who developed the Bolt browser, its not easy making a browser especially since people are very critical about it, but what they did with the bolt is interesting. People who use a phone browser want it very fast and I think they have achieved that end, making me a happy bolt user.

Download Bolt Browser : Bolt Blackberry

Opera 4.2

The Blackberry browser is getting better, but for most of us still waiting for the Blackberry Bold or the Storm, the new Opera browser is a must have application. You now have different color schemes to choose from, I set mine black to match my dark blackberry curve theme.

I notice a considerable increase in loading time, partly due to Opera updating their server reducing the overall loading time for Opera mini users. I really love this browser, its no safari but works just fine in my Blackberry Curve.

The Inventor of tab browsing has created a new browser for the Blackberry. This time it comes with all the modern conveniences of a modern browser such as RSS support, photo sharing, and secure connections.

Description from Opera Website:
Opera Mini allows you access to the full Internet on your BlackBerry device. Users can surf any Web site such as Google, Yahoo, Amazon, eBay, and Hotmail on their BlackBerry device just like they would on a normal computer. Instead of requiring the phone to process Web pages, it uses a remote server to pre-process the page before sending it to the device. You can also download Opera for your desktop so you can sync your bookmarks with your Blackberry and your PC.

Models: Works on all models with enhance feature for new Blackberry Phones

Note: You can use Opera using your Blackberry's Wifi making a really great companion for your blackberry.

Blackberry Shortcuts

This application enables you to have shortcuts to your favorite sites on
your Blackberry. A great time saving device compared to typing the exact
URLs or domain names of your favorite sites which are very difficult to remember.
We had heard a little about BIS 3.1 before which mentioned that it would include 2 way calendar sync for Gmail but that looks like it was pushed off until BIS 3.2. Still RIM is working on getting 2 way email read/unread sync first so I doubt calendar sync is a priority.
From the details:

v3.1 (June 2010)

Two-way contact (address book) sync with Yahoo! and Windows Live Hotmail and Sync ML (ALT-N)

Ability to share credentials on the device for an overall easier

User able to self delete BIS account (added security)

v3.2 (October 2010)

Calendar sync with Yahoo! and Google

Small business management console

What do you think? Anybody else just waiting for RIM to support full ActiveSync in BIS so we can get 2 way sync of EVERYTHING including email, calendar, notes, contacts, & tasks? Facebook is the perfect portal to BlackBerry users who aren’t power users and familiar with all the features that BlackBerry has to offer. I have talked to friends over Facebook who have only discovered barcodes on their BlackBerry since I posted the BBM news to my wall. RIM aren’t the only people educating users through Facebook. SAM and MO BlackBerry, the avatars created by Rogers to educate their sales reps, use a variety of Facebook apps and posts to get the message out.
Even though it’s a great idea, the service still lacks in a few ways. The process to create a BBM barcode is very simple, all you have to do is follow the steps, input your pin, and the app will generate the barcode. Once the barcode is created, you can customize it and add it to your profile picture. The app will also create a box for your Facebook profile page, as well as a news feed post about the barcode. This is where the service starts to break down.

The profile picture that has your barcode attached doesn’t automatically get added to your profile. Instead, the new picture is placed in an album called “BlackBerry Barcode Generator Photos”. From there, you have to click “Make Profile Picture” in order to set it up. While this process is easy, I’ve noticed a lot of users who added it to their profile, but didn’t know where to find the new picture and thus never set it as their profile picture. While I’m not sure about what APIs are available when making Facebook apps, this is definitely something that can be improved by, at the very least, a message saying “make sure to add this picture as your profile pic.”

Also added to your profile is a small box that contains a BlackBerry with your barcode inside. I can’t figure out what the point of this box is. The barcode is so small that I couldn’t scan it with a Bold 9000 or a Bold 9700. At the very least, this barcode box should expand to a larger version of the barcode that can be more easily scanned.
Another issue with the service is that RIM missed an opportunity to integrate this feature with the Facebook for BlackBerry app. RIM know how many users have installed Facebook on their BlackBerry, they have their email addresses and accounts logged. How difficult would it have been to write code that tells you how many of your Facebook friends have a BlackBerry and thus can connect with you on BBM? I’m sure it’s technically possible. They could have also integrated this with their MyBlackBerry social network, but that’s not as important in my opinion.
Overall, I would say this is a great initiative by RIM, but whoever is in charge of the program didn’t have the vision to take it as far as it should have gone. Hopefully we’ll see an update to this service, or some integration, but my guess is that this was a one-trick pony. GMTaskSync simply synchronizes your BlackBerry tasks with your Google tasks wirelessly.

Now that GMTaskSync is out of beta the application can sync your tasks to either Gmail or your Google Apps account. The sync is two ways and looks very similar to Google Sync for BlackBerry. Currently when the app runs into conflicts the server overwrites the BlackBerry but that might change in the future. I am not sure if the app also syncs the notes and due date related to the task.

Check out the app in the store for $3.99 at this link. BlueBerryNite Workshop is also planning on sending every BerryReview user who buys GMTaskSync in the coming week until March 23rd a free registration code for their twitter tool "twast".

There has been much speculation over what OS 6.0 could possibly look like. We were recently hit with these images of what appear to be of a device running OS 6.0 with a similar screen resolution of a storm or storm2. These spy shot images come highly regarded as real from one our best connects. We're hoping to see it soon on a physical device (maybe the slider?) and so until then take from it what you will.

From what we can see, it appears that Research In Motion may have a competing OS against the likes of Google Android; making use of widgets. It will be interesting to see if a device will soon surface with this OS to give it more confirmation. However, from what we've seen and know, it is obvious RIM is at least moving in a forward direction.

YouVersion is an online bible community where people can collaborate and share with other members. They recently created a reader for the Blackberry for their users. I have to say this is one of the best readers anyone has created for the Blackberry. It's light, simple and even has a community sections where you can read people's contribution.
YouVerion's Blackberry bible reader also contains several English bible translations and even several non English translations. Youversion is Free as it should and I highy recommend it to anyone wanting to catch up with their reading.

Dipdive is a social network created by will.i.am that began as a place to host the video “Yes We Can” and has expanded to be somewhat like MySpace. The social network looks as though it has a ton of funding from RIM, as videos on the site constantly feature people talking and using BlackBerrys, and the homepage advertises the Black Eyed Peas concert sponsored by BlackBerry.

I thought I would give Dipdive a try as RIM seem to be investing a lot of money in both Dipdive and the Black Eyed Peas, and their BlackBerry app is available as a free download. It’s hard to review the application without reviewing the social network as well, but they’re intertwined and both relevant.

Dipdive is a social network centered around the Black Eyed Peas. It seems most of the members of the social network are die-hard BEP fans, who are there to talk about the group and their favorite songs. This seems to be where the site and its users derive all value. Users get a fan club of sorts and the band gets to plug their upcoming shows and music. This is also the biggest downside of the social network. If you’re not a BEP fan, you’ll be hard pressed to find a reason to join the site.

In order to bring in users who aren’t BEP fans, Dipdive uses video, blogs, pictures and original content. Personally, I think the content is really weak, and isn’t enough for me to want to spend any time on the site. Overall, it seems the site is on the decline. There doesn’t seem to be many users and Alexa gives it a very low ranking. Dipdive’s traffic has been taking a nose dive for some time now and probably spikes when the group release a new hit.

Okay, enough about the social network and on to the app. When it comes to uploading content to the site from the Dipdive app, there are a lot of great features. You can upload multiple pictures, and edit details such as the ability to post anonymously, write a description, tag with location and set privacy settings for each. The app allows you to upload a lot of different kinds of content such as pictures, video, blog posts, and audio. For someone who is an avid Dipdive user, this is probably the most useful feature of the app.

When it comes to navigation, I found the app a little jittery. It wasn’t always clear what menu was selected, and I found myself scrolling past where I intended to go quite often. I know I can change my trackball speed, but no other application I have loaded gives me this sort of trouble. There are also a few sections in the app where the UI could be improved, and even considered broken.

Almost immediately after loading the app, I got a friend request. It’s easy to accept and view friend requests from the app, but there are times when the app relies on the Dipdive mobile site. A well-designed BlackBerry app shouldn’t require you to jump to a website for information, and should contain everything in the app itself.

Overall, I would say this is a decent app for anyone who is really active in the Dipdive social network. With regards to RIM’s relationship with the Black Eyed Peas and will.i.am’s Dipdive, I’m honestly a little embarrassed. I think it was a mistake to align the BlackBerry brand, known as a high quality smartphone for professionals, with a failed social network and a band that, contrary to what Billboard will tell you, is widely regarded as talentless. I understand the need to align the BlackBerry brand with a cool, hip and young artist, given the latest shift in demographics, but RIM’s marketing team failed in choosing someone appropriate.

This app was reviewed on a BlackBerry Bold 9000 with the official OS 5.0.0.411.

I'm still waiting for a true VOIP service that works with the Blackberry, I was hoping Vonage would come out with a true VOIP app that would work over WIFI. Altough Vonage does not do this, its hard to deny having a Vonage app in your Blackberry is a great option. Using Vonage you can take advantage of low international calling rates and even use a pay as you go option. The sound quality is really good using Vonage to make calls, just be aware the software dials a local US number to route your calls. Having the Vonage app dial a local number is not all bad since it makes compatible with even the Blackberry phones.

Download Vonage for the Blackberry: Vonage Software
