Hello everyone!! It's been such a long while since my last post that I am not sure where to begin. I think I've lost my blogging mojo and hope to find it soon. If you know where it is let me know.

On a serious note, as some of you know I have not been feeling well for a while and my absence is related to that. I am home and hope to be able to get back on track in the coming days/week. This last week has been mostly about settling into my daily routines and focusing on my family. Today I woke up knowing that I would not let another day pass without saying hello to all of you.

Thank you so much for all of your amazing emails and for showing me so much love and concern, I am totally overwhelmed! I have so many emails that I am not sure when I will be able to reply but I will try my best to answer them asap. We have so much catching up to do, cannot wait to read your blogs and get caught up on what you have all been up to!

I hope you enjoy these amazing photos taken just outside my door.

I remember carrying on about not having any snow, almost daily, and all of a sudden...WHITE-OUT. Finland has been covered in this gloriously beautiful blanket of snow since mid-December and I wanted to share these with you. Finland has not had this much snow since 1968...it is awesome!

Home For The Holidays

This beautiful home was designed by designer Hanne Berzantin. The Christmas season brings extra colors to the neutral interior of white, gray and browns. The coffee table is made of untreated recycled teak.

The Arco-fiberglass chairs were designed Finn Østergaard and manufactured by Punkzum of Interstudio. The painting is by Anette Holmberg.

The black reading wall lamps, in the kitchen, are not a typical choice, but the homeowners like the way they looked.

Kids room is festive and fun with lots of color. The wooden table and stools are by Nanna Ditzel Trissen- originally designed in 1962, and are still in production today.

The crib , Kili, was manufactured by Sebra and grows and with the child. The fabulous bright quilted rug can be purchased directly from the manufacturer, here.

Awesome Christmas Gifts

Have you made your list, and have you checked it twice? Good, then you should already know who's been naughty or nice. Here's my list of a few awesome finds for the boys and girls in my life. I hope you like them as much I do.

All I want for Christmas this year is the Bubble necklace and ring set designed by Tiina Arkko from Oz Jewel in Helsinki. The Bubble set is stunningly beautiful. It looks like one solid piece but in fact they are all small individual pieces of silver (or gold). When you put the necklace on the small individual pieces glisten like diamonds against your skin. Absolutely stunning!

Oz is a Finnish jewelery shop specializing in modern gold and silver jewelery in the heart of Helsinki, on Kluuvikatu. Last week I visited the Galleria Heino in Helsinki and viewed the "Re-Trace" exhibition by artist Oliver Whitehead. It was fabulous! The exhibition runs through December 20, 2009, if you get a chance to stop by the gallery it is definitely worth the visit. I am so glad I went and saw it up close, photographs don't do this series justice. Mr. Whitehead works with different media, eg. film, video, digital imaging, photography, installations, drawings, wall drawings and paintings.

CTRL Clothing

Finnish label CTRL has been around for at least 11 years. At the beginning it was an underground label rooted within the skateboarding crowd. A few weeks ago I was going through my daughters old room (upon her request) and came across 2 huge plastic storage cases with at least 50 CTRL tee-shirts and sweatshirts that she had carefully packed away and stored in her closet before we moved to SE Asia. When my son saw them he went wild and snatched them all up. When I told the girl about it she went a little cuckoo... fogetaboutit! She wants them back! Go figure, the drama I tell you the drama! '

To avoid conflict I decided to buy the boy some new ones (in case the girl actually means it and takes them all back.) I was pleasantly surprised to find the label bigger and better than it was 10 years ago! The brand is trendier and more colorful than it once was, but still just as quirky and fun as ever. I like many of the new designs but my favorite is the’ Missing U’ tee and sweatshirt.

Helsinki Chosen-World Design Capital 2012

Last week the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) designated Helsinki as the World Design Capital (HWDC) for the year 2012. HWDC 2012 will comprise a wide range of events and projects related to design.

Helsinki’s theme in its World Design Capital year 2012 is Open Helsinki – Embedded Design. Design embedded in everyday life in Helsinki ties design to innovation from the very beginning. Embedded design in Helsinki brings together human needs, aesthetic qualities and functionality.

"Design embedded in people’s lives is the overriding theme of Helsinki’s World Design Capital year and events. Helsinki approaches design from a broad perspective, and design underlies all processes that bring about social, economic and cultural improvement."

Come and discover the new and improved Marimekko lifestyle collections. These last two collections are my absolute favorite, especially the one above. From home accessories to the socks on a child's feet it is pure Marimekko. Definitely puts a smile on my face and worth a peak for all Marimekko lovers out there.

I love these images! They have done an amazing job redesigning this company. After every show I walk away cheerful and wanting something I've seen there. I always think that's a good sign, being that I only have an eye for black or white. So when color catches my fancy I always stop and take notice. Tomorrow I will bring you the Spring/Summer 2010 Collections.

Last weekend the weather guy said we were getting snow- well it didn't happen. I've been waiting and waiting and finally I think it's finally going to happen! So to prompt things along (I'm desperate, it's dark and out there) I am posting these stunning images of the Oulu University Project by Todd Saunders.

" This project was a two-week workshop in Northern Finland for the International exchange students at Oulu Architecture School. The class consisted of 21 students from 14 different countries. Three days were devoted to experimenting with diverse forms through model building. We spent seven days constructing the chosen form from. The last days of the course students chose sites where they would place the project for a short period of time to see how the project would respond to a place or the people using the project. These wonderful shoes are by Julia Lundsten the designer behind the Finnish shoe label FINSK. Last season I did a post on her designs (see here) and I was pleased with the response. Many loved the collection and some of you managed to locate your favorite in your area.

These collections for Port 1961 and Basso & Brooke SS-10 are even more fabulous than the last! The sculptural heels carved from Finnish birch is still much a part of her design and is very prominent in each collection. However this season she also designed more traditional styles for the more conservative among us and the results are fab.

This is the wonderfully zen New York City apartment of design icon Donna Karan. Ms. Karan has created an empire with her chic, well tailored and wearable designs. Her Upper West Side apartment, with sweeping views over Central Park is spacious and tranquil. It's a retreat from her hectic days in the fashion industry.

Architect Bonetti Kozerski worked closely with Ms. Karan to create a gorgeous, peaceful retreat. The black and white color palette adds a spa like feel to the apartment. It's wonderful to see that her simple, less is more approach carries into all facets of her life.

Donna Karan's Hampton Estate is just as fabulous and serene as her New York City apartment. Both of her New York State residences have a that casual Asian style she obviously loves so much. I can easily visualize the goddess of chic walking around this place.

designed by Artek, Architect-ATP Planungs GmbHI love all the bright cheerful colors of the rooms and furniture. The furniture is light weight and easy to maneuver (by the little ones) and keep clean. These colorful play areas were designed to encourage creativity and confidence and help develop social and physical skills in children as they play. Parents can join in or they can watch their child from a sitting area.

We had our first snow a couple of days ago and it was beautiful and white. Sadly it rained today buh bye snow, it melted:-(. Then surprise... it snowed again and it is sticking! Yipee! Although here we say goodbye to Finland's gorgeously crisp Autumn days we welcome the stunning beauty that winter brings. Yes, yes I am all poetic and excited about winter right now, you know the darkness, snow, ice, but it won't be long before I am daydreaming of warm sunny beaches in far off places. Who cares for now everything is beautiful in nature and I cannot wait to get out there and enjoy it. Too bad my little man Jonah is back in Seattle, he would have had a blast out there.

Frank Gehry-Hotel Marqués de Riscal

The Hotel Marqués de Riscal in Elciego, Spain was was commissioned by the Marqués de Riscal Winery and was designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry. Mr. Gehry also designed Spain's famed Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

The hotel is located in the Rioja wine region. It has spectacular views of the vineyards and the town of Elciego. You can enjoy the vistas from any of the hotels eight terraces. Gehry's trademark waves of titanium and mirror-finish stainless steel on the outer surface shade each room from sunlight without obscuring the view.

Halloween In Finland

These are some photos of the youngest man in my life. His name is Jonah (Nonah some days) he is two and I adore him. He cracks me up because he is methodical about everything he does. It took a while to find the perfect pumpkins because he wanted two of similar size. When he found them he was done. He climbed in the wheel barrel, folded his hands together and asked to go home. Now that's the life. Get what you want and get out quick. I must confess, I get so much pleasure watching a child develop, there is nothing like it in the world! Well at least not for me.

Cupcakes For You

These cupcakes are from the GOOP Newsletter. I have not tried them yet so I hope they are good. Goop 's recipes are always very good, so I trust that these will be as fabulous as all the others. If you haven't already, I hope you will take a moment to visit Goop and check it out for yourself. Ms. Paltrow's guests are always amazing and the advice, recipes and ideas are great.

Eyeball Cupcakes

Ingredients:

½ cup vegetable shortening
1½ cups granulated sugar
2 eggs
¼ cup red food coloring, plus more for the frosting
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
2½ cups unbleached, all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk
¼ cup water
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon white vinegar
1 teaspoon baking soda
plenty of vanilla butter-cream frosting (use your favorite recipe or buy it prepared)
red food coloring
24 Gummy Lifesavers (or any round candy with a hole in it)
24 black jellybeans

Preheat oven to 350°. Line two 12-cupcake tins with white paper liners.

Cream shortening and sugar together by hand or in an electric mixer until fluffy. Add eggs and blend well. In a small bowl, make a paste of food coloring and cocoa and add to the shortening mixture. Sift flour and salt together into this mixture. Add the buttermilk and stir until incorporated, then stir in the water and the vanilla. In a small bowl, mix the vinegar with the baking soda. Fold this mixture into the cake batter, making sure it’s incorporated but being sure not to over-mix it.

Pour the batter into the cupcake tins. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the cakes spring back when touched. Remove from oven and let cool for about 10 minutes, then turn the cupcakes out of pans and onto a rack to finish cooling completely.

When they’re cool, cover the cupcakes with vanilla frosting. Tint your extra frosting with red food coloring. Using a pastry bag and a small round tip, pipe the red frosting on the tops of the cupcakes to resemble bloodshot veins. Place one jellybean into the hole of each round candy. Now you have irises and pupils. Place one in the center of each cupcake. Serve in pairs. Eeeek!

Beyond Borders Wednesday-Holscher Architects

Another gorgeous home from Denmark. This stunning Copenhagen apartment building was designed by architects Nils Holscher and Claus Sivager from Holscher Architects. The architects occupy the top two apartments with their families. I hope you enjoy these stunning images taken by Martin Dyrløv and Peter Nørby. Lots of glass, white and open spaces, all of my favorite features in a home. The building has received several awards since its completion

The top floor is amazing! I love the walls of glass, clean modern lines, the spectacular suspended staircases and glass floor in parts of the apartments. It’s hard to believe that these apartments are the home to three small children! I love it!

The family spends most of their time on the first floor of the apartment where you see the large kitchen & dining room and family room.

The orange bar stools are by Louise Campbell, the lamps are Louis Poulsen. In Front of the window is a bench that stretches the length of that glass wall. The bench is used as seating and extra storage for the Sivagers two boys.

La Biennale di Venezia 2009- Artek

Did you know....
The Finnish Pavilion is a pre-fabricated structure designed by Alvar Aalto in 1955 and was assembled in 1956 from parts produced in Finland. The Pavilion is made entirely of wood, and was intended to be used for the 1956 exhibition.

Artek is the sponsor of the 53rd La Biennale di Venezia International Art Exhibition, which opened on June 07th and will close on November 22,2009. Artek designed furnishings for the Palazzo delle Exposizioni della Biennale, a bookshop, cafeteria and additional furniture for an educational area.

Artist Tobias Rehberger won first place for the cafeteria he designed in collaboration with Artek. Rehberger was awarded the Golden Lion as best artist at the 53^rd International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia.

Jorma Puranen...Photographic Magic

Contemporary Finnish photographer, Jorma Puranen was born in 1951 in Pyhäjoki, Finland. He studied photography from 1973 to 1978 at the Helsinki School of Industrial Art. He returned to teach there in 1995 and has since mentored many young artists. Puranen’s work can be found in most of the major international photographic collections. You can take a look at an artist statement and his CV here.

Jorma Puranen creates Icy Prospects images by painting a wooden board with high gloss black paint, he then photographs the reflected image of the landscape. The end result is breathtaking.

" In Icy Prospects I have particularly considered the nature of the picturesque, the sublime and the mysterious. The idea of Icy Prospects came from reading histories of northern expeditions. The Arctic is often associated with an idea of immensity, infinity and distance. Journeys across the sea are always both metaphorically and meteorologically an encounter with the unknown." I am so pleased to be incorporating the "Beyond Borders Wednesday"

into my blogging week! I have wanted to diversify a little and share the work of some of my favorite non Finnish architects and designers from around the world. Today I bring to you the work of the McGill Design Group.

I am a huge fan of the work of the Toronto based architecture and interior design firm McGill Design Group, their work is divine. When I first saw the photos I'm sharing with you today I was thrilled because the whole space is magnificent. These designers know how to keep a space looking and feeling clean and modern but without losing the warmth we all seek. I hope you enjoy these photos as much as I have. Tikau, Bee Mine....

Her main objectives have always been transparency, sustainability, and an alternative to mass production as well as a commitment to contributing to the communities she works with. Today a portion of Tikau's sales goes directly to local charities. Take a closer look at Tikau and Ms. Snellman here.

The gorgeous Tikau Bombroo rug was designed by Finnish Artist/Illustrator Klaus Haapaniemi and handmade in Kashmir, India. The inspiration for the pattern of the rug are bees, also reflected in the name "Bombroo" meaning "Bee" in Kashmiri.

La Biennale di Venezia 2009- Artek

Did you know....The Finnish Pavilion is a pre-fabricated structure designed by Alvar Aalto in 1955 and was assembled in 1956 from parts produced in Finland. The Pavilion is made entirely of wood, and was intended to be used for the 1956 exhibition.

Artek is the sponsor of the 53rd La Biennale di Venezia International Art Exhibition, which opened on June 07th and will close on November 22,2009. Artek designed furnishings for the Palazzo delle Exposizioni della Biennale, a bookshop, cafeteria and additional furniture for an educational area.

Artist Tobias Rehberger won first place for the cafeteria he designed in collaboration with Artek. Rehberger was awarded the Golden Lion as best artist at the 53rd International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia.
