This is the wonderfully zen New York City apartment of design icon Donna Karan. Ms. Karan has created an empire with her chic, well tailored and wearable designs. Her Upper West Side apartment, with sweeping views over Central Park is spacious and tranquil. It's a retreat from her hectic days in the fashion industry.

Architect Bonetti Kozerski worked closely with Ms. Karan to create a gorgeous, peaceful retreat. The black and white color palette adds a spa like feel to the apartment. It's wonderful to see that her simple, less is more approach carries into all facets of her life.

Donna Karan's Hampton Estate is just as fabulous and serene as her New York City apartment. Both of her New York State residences have a that casual Asian style she obviously loves so much. I can easily visualize the goddess of chic walking around this place.

designed by Artek, Architect-ATP Planungs GmbHI love all the bright cheerful colors of the rooms and furniture. The furniture is light weight and easy to maneuver (by the little ones) and keep clean. These colorful play areas were designed to encourage creativity and confidence and help develop social and physical skills in children as they play. Parents can join in or they can watch their child from a sitting area.

We had our first snow a couple of days ago and it was beautiful and white. Sadly it rained today buh bye snow, it melted:-(. Then surprise... it snowed again and it is sticking! Yipee! Although here we say goodbye to Finland's gorgeously crisp Autumn days we welcome the stunning beauty that winter brings. Yes, yes I am all poetic and excited about winter right now, you know the darkness, snow, ice, but it won't be long before I am daydreaming of warm sunny beaches in far off places. Who cares for now everything is beautiful in nature and I cannot wait to get out there and enjoy it. Too bad my little man Jonah is back in Seattle, he would have had a blast out there.

Frank Gehry-Hotel Marqués de Riscal

The Hotel Marqués de Riscal in Elciego, Spain was was commissioned by the Marqués de Riscal Winery and was designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry. Mr. Gehry also designed Spain's famed Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

The hotel is located in the Rioja wine region. It has spectacular views of the vineyards and the town of Elciego. You can enjoy the vistas from any of the hotels eight terraces. Gehry's trademark waves of titanium and mirror-finish stainless steel on the outer surface shade each room from sunlight without obscuring the view.

Bukowskis Auction House has an international modern & contemporary art and design auction coming up next Sunday, November 08, 2009 at their Helsinki location. The online catalog is available online (here) for viewing. "Bukowskis organises two major international auctions every year. Objects for sale include Finnish and foreign art, sculpture, furniture, silver, jewellery, glass, porcelain and design items of a high standard."

Halloween In Finland

These are some photos of the youngest man in my life. His name is Jonah (Nonah some days) he is two and I adore him. He cracks me up because he is methodical about everything he does. It took a while to find the perfect pumpkins because he wanted two of similar size. When he found them he was done. He climbed in the wheel barrel, folded his hands together and asked to go home. Now that's the life. Get what you want and get out quick. I must confess, I get so much pleasure watching a child develop, there is nothing like it in the world! Well at least not for me.

Cupcakes For You

These cupcakes are from the GOOP Newsletter. I have not tried them yet so I hope they are good. Goop 's recipes are always very good, so I trust that these will be as fabulous as all the others. If you haven't already, I hope you will take a moment to visit Goop and check it out for yourself. Ms. Paltrow's guests are always amazing and the advice, recipes and ideas are great.

Eyeball Cupcakes

Ingredients:

½ cup vegetable shortening
1½ cups granulated sugar
2 eggs
¼ cup red food coloring, plus more for the frosting
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
2½ cups unbleached, all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk
¼ cup water
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon white vinegar
1 teaspoon baking soda
plenty of vanilla butter-cream frosting (use your favorite recipe or buy it prepared)
red food coloring
24 Gummy Lifesavers (or any round candy with a hole in it)
24 black jellybeans

Preheat oven to 350°. Line two 12-cupcake tins with white paper liners.

Cream shortening and sugar together by hand or in an electric mixer until fluffy. Add eggs and blend well. In a small bowl, make a paste of food coloring and cocoa and add to the shortening mixture. Sift flour and salt together into this mixture. Add the buttermilk and stir until incorporated, then stir in the water and the vanilla. In a small bowl, mix the vinegar with the baking soda. Fold this mixture into the cake batter, making sure it’s incorporated but being sure not to over-mix it.

Pour the batter into the cupcake tins. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the cakes spring back when touched. Remove from oven and let cool for about 10 minutes, then turn the cupcakes out of pans and onto a rack to finish cooling completely.

When they’re cool, cover the cupcakes with vanilla frosting. Tint your extra frosting with red food coloring. Using a pastry bag and a small round tip, pipe the red frosting on the tops of the cupcakes to resemble bloodshot veins. Place one jellybean into the hole of each round candy. Now you have irises and pupils. Place one in the center of each cupcake. Serve in pairs. Eeeek!

Another gorgeous home from Denmark. This stunning Copenhagen apartment building was designed by architects Nils Holscher and Claus Sivager from Holscher Architects. The architects occupy the top two apartments with their families. I hope you enjoy these stunning images taken by Martin Dyrløv and Peter Nørby. Lots of glass, white and open spaces, all of my favorite features in a home. The building has received several awards since its completion

The top floor is amazing! I love the walls of glass, clean modern lines, the spectacular suspended staircases and glass floor in parts of the apartments. It’s hard to believe that these apartments are the home to three small children! I love it!

Piero Lissone sofa and table- the sliding door leads to bedroom & bathroom.

The family spends most of their time on the first floor of the apartment where you see the large kitchen & dining room and family room.

The orange bar stools are by Louise Campbell, the lamps are Louis Poulsen. In Front of the window is a bench that stretches the length of that glass wall. The bench is used as seating and extra storage for the Sivagers two boys.

La Biennale di Venezia 2009- Artek

Did you know....
The Finnish Pavilion is a pre-fabricated structure designed by Alvar Aalto in 1955 and was assembled in 1956 from parts produced in Finland. The Pavilion is made entirely of wood, and was intended to be used for the 1956 exhibition.

Artek is the sponsor of the 53rd La Biennale di Venezia International Art Exhibition, which opened on June 07th and will close on November 22,2009. Artek designed furnishings for the Palazzo delle Exposizioni della Biennale, a bookshop, cafeteria and additional furniture for an educational area.

Artist Tobias Rehberger won first place for the cafeteria he designed in collaboration with Artek. Rehberger was awarded the Golden Lion as best artist at the 53^rd International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia.

Jorma Puranen...Photographic Magic

Contemporary Finnish photographer, Jorma Puranen was born in 1951 in Pyhäjoki, Finland. He studied photography from 1973 to 1978 at the Helsinki School of Industrial Art. He returned to teach there in 1995 and has since mentored many young artists. Puranen’s work can be found in most of the major international photographic collections. You can take a look at an artist statement and his CV here.

Jorma Puranen creates Icy Prospects images by painting a wooden board with high gloss black paint, he then photographs the reflected image of the landscape. The end result is breathtaking.

" In Icy Prospects I have particularly considered the nature of the picturesque, the sublime and the mysterious. The idea of Icy Prospects came from reading histories of northern expeditions. The Arctic is often associated with an idea of immensity, infinity and distance. Journeys across the sea are always both metaphorically and meteorologically an encounter with the unknown." I am so pleased to be incorporating the "Beyond Borders Wednesday"

into my blogging week! I have wanted to diversify a little and share the work of some of my favorite non Finnish architects and designers from around the world. Today I bring to you the work of the McGill Design Group.

I am a huge fan of the work of the Toronto based architecture and interior design firm McGill Design Group, their work is divine. When I first saw the photos I'm sharing with you today I was thrilled because the whole space is magnificent. These designers know how to keep a space looking and feeling clean and modern but without losing the warmth we all seek. I hope you enjoy these photos as much as I have. Tikau, Bee Mine....

Tikau was founded by Taina Snellman. Her main objectives have always been transparency, sustainability, and an alternative to mass production as well as a commitment to contributing to the communities she works with. Today a portion of Tikau's sales goes directly to local charities. Take a closer look at Tikau and Ms. Snellman here.

The gorgeous Tikau Bombroo rug was designed by Finnish Artist/Illustrator Klaus Haapaniemi and handmade in Kashmir, India. The inspiration for the pattern of the rug are bees, also reflected in the name "Bombroo" meaning "Bee" in Kashmiri.

Color Fever... À la Panton

This is the home of Carin Panton von Halem daughter of the designer Verner Panton. Her colorific house in Southern Germany is an amazing tribute to her father. The house, bursting with color and decked out with some of the groovy furniture made famous by her father sits proud in this spectacular home that he helped her create and she shares with husband and two sons.

The Orange room has two sliding glass walls that lead to the garden and the pool. To get the colors exactly right the orange sofa and table were custom made. The dish is by Verner Panton.

From the custom, bright yellow, kitchen you can see all the way through to the outdoor pool.

The lamps on the shelf are Verner Panton originals as well as the art work The Lips. The image is of Carin's mothers lips. Serge Hasenböhler photo in the The hot-pink hallway and a one of a kind Verner Panton chair at the end.

The table is from Rausch, Tivoli-chairs were designed by Verner Panton, in a new green color. Carin Panton and her husband Clemens von Halem designed the house so that most of the floor to ceiling glass doors slide open, connecting the indoor and outdoor spaces.

"I grew up with color so I need color around me, it gives me warmth and confidence. I gave each room one unique color to create peace and harmony. If you use too many different colors in a room the result is messy and makes me uneasy." When Carin Panton and Clemens von Halem bought the house, they could not afford to do much with it at the time. "I thought that we could work with the colors to make it more exciting. Dad helped me to choose them, "she says with a smile.

Glass Artist Pertti Metsälampi

A few stunning pieces from one of my favorite glass artists, Pertti Metsälampi. I am drawn to the purity of his color palette and the clean lines of his designs. His work can be found in museums and private collections around the world.

Trained as an Interior Architect, Pertti Metsälampi, has had a long successful career as a glass artist. Employed from 1976-1984 by the legendary Finnish artist Tapio Wirkkala, Metsälampi says that his work alongside the great master had a big impact on him and his style. Today he uses some of the old methods of glass blowing that they used back then.

"The years I worked with Tapio Wirkkala had a great impact on my work and production methods. It was in his design office where lines and shapes were approached with the precision of a sculptor. The techniques are old, still one can always find something new. Glass is transformed into sculpture in the hands of the master glassblower." Pertti Metsälampi

One Stop Shopping at Design Boulevard

Design Boulevard is a fabulous interior design shop located in the Finnish City of Tampere. They carry a broad range of furniture, lighting, French ceramics, electronics, and other accessories from new and established designers. Every piece is carefully selected and reflects their passion for design. Their label, DSGNBLVD, is currently under development and will consist of pillows, throws and designer toys.

The Design Boulevard website is in Finnish and unfortunately cannot be translated using the Google translator. It is a fun site to surf, especially the link on the right that reads inspiraatio blogi that means inspiration blog.

It is a fun blog, and although it is in Finnish it provides the name and web address of different websites. A treasure trove of inspiration, ie. gronlykke.com, theroyalcafe.dk, and cphsquare.dk. It is definitely worth a look. Hope you all agree!

The backsplash was made using vintage Trifid wallpaper from Osborne & Little. The wallpaper is protected protected with Optiwhite glass. Unlike ordinary glass, this glass has no iron, which makes it crystal clear. (TRIFID W5556 pattern is Interlocking Chinese key in metallics)

Notice that in the photos, the homeowner used the wallpaper on a different angle than
Osborne & Little displays theirs. I love that sort of versatility in wallpaper, textiles and art, It breaks it up a little when you can personalize it.

Patric Johansson

I was reading an old issue of the Swedish home decor magazine Sköna hem, and I loved everything about this gorgeous apartment, including the photographs. The apartment is located in the Södermalm district of Stockholm and was shot by photographer Patric Johansson. I have heard of him before from stylists, designers and other photographers and was thrilled to finally see his work. Here are the photos from Sköna hem article that I referred to and a few more that I love and I want to share you .

The Saarinen marble top Tulip table looks stunning on the black faux pony skin rug, flanked by the Eames Eiffel chairs and the Tripp Trapp highchair by Stokke. Tom Dixon's Copper Shade Pendant Lamp looks spectacular in this kitchen.

In the living room the pillows on the sofa are covered in a variety of fabrics by Josef Frank from Svenskt Tenn.

The Art of A Letter

Aleksi Hautamäki of Armas Design Oy. founded Character in Helsinki about one year ago. While working . Character recycles old signs that have been dismantled and would otherwise be destroyed. The company rescues the letters and gives them a complete overhaul. They clean them up and add a new transformer, LED lights- which provide 30,000 hours of light, power cord and they are good to go. Most of the letters are rain proof, all have been tested, and meet the European electricity standards. Whether displayed indoors or in the garden, the letters are like light sculptures and look fantastic anywhere.

The letters can be purchased online at the Character Net-Shop here. They come in different colors and sizes. Character maintains a wish list for individuals wanting a letter or special character that is unavailable at the time. Inventory changes as letters become available.

Wholesome Goodness...The Color Orange

Orange may not suit everyone’s taste, but generally it does add warmth to a room. In this home the white walls and beautiful accessories set the tone the homeowners were after. This is not the 70's plasticky sometimes tacky orange we remember. Today's orange is chic and can be spotted from the runways of Paris to the pages of fashion and top shelter magazines.

This gorgeous London apartment is one of many stunning spaces available via Inspace photography studios. The two story apartment is a white on white paradise with large windows and beautiful open spaces. The only color in the apartment comes from the art and other perfectly chosen pieces.

Todd Saunders-House With A View

This beautiful white wood-clad single family residence(Villa G) is located in the coastal town of Hjellestad, Norway (near the city of Bergen) and was designed by Todd Saunders of Saunders Architecture.

The kitchen island is 8 metres long and was meticulously designed. It is very functional, storing the smaller kitchen appliances and keeping electrical outlets and cords out of sight.

The ground floor is used mainly by the children. It consists of a family room, three bedrooms, and a play area with its own climbing wall and enough floor area for roller-blading and running around.

The staircase was made using one solid piece of 1cm thick of galvanized steel, carefully processed to make it slip resistant.

This stunning modern home looks like a place many of us would love to live in. But it must be like heaven on earth for active growing children!

Saunders Architecture is a Norwegian-based firm founded by Canadian architect Todd Saunders. I first heard of Todd Saunders back in 2005- he was teaching an architecture design course at the University of Oulu in Northern Finland. Over the years I've continued to follow his work and I am always excited whenever I read about an upcoming project. His work is modern, fresh and exciting. He uses large expanses of glass and natural materials in his designs. The large windows invite the outdoors in and add interest to the design.

Love, Love these Archie Grand notebooks, they are absolutely fab. With punchy titles such as, Designers I met and liked, Artists I met and liked, Fashionistas I met and liked, Chefs I met and liked, etc. The notebooks are wonderfully stylish with a simple matte cover in an array of fun colors and 160 blank pages just waiting for you to make your first entry. The notebooks are made to fit in a pocket of a suit or a small evening bag.

Artek is the sponsor of the 53rd La Biennale di Venezia International Art Exhibition, which opened on June 07th and will close on November 22,2009. Artek designed furnishings for the Palazzo delle Exposizioni della Biennale, a bookshop, cafeteria and additional furniture for an educational area.

Artist Tobias Rehberger won first place for the cafeteria he designed in collaboration with Artek. Rehberger was awarded the Golden Lion as best artist at the 53rd International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia.

Did you know....
The Finnish Pavilion is a pre-fabricated structure designed by Alvar Aalto in 1955 and was assembled in 1956 from parts produced in Finland. The Pavilion is made entirely of wood, and was intended to be used for the 1956 exhibition.
