Several years ago when I attempted to apply for a job overseas, I was stunned over their qualification:

Must have 12 years of education

Seriously, do I have to take another two years so I could qualify to the said job position? When I heard that DepEd want to implement twelve years of education in our country, it gives me hope and also for those who want to have a quality education for their kids.

We adapted the educational system patterned from Spain and the United States. In 1946, right after the liberation of our country during World War II, the system changed radically.

What is K to 12 Program?

An education program initiated by our government and DepEd covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education. It consists of six years of primary education, four years of Junior High School, and two years of Senior High School. Students will hone their skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship.

Below is the timeline on the journey of K + 12 Basic Education program that DepEd and legislators initiated for a better future. And it's now known as Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 :

Oct. 5, 2010: K+12 proposal started during the World Teachers’ Day when Education Secretary Armin Luistro unveiled DepEd’s “Enhanced Kindergarten-Grade 12 (K+12)” program.

Dec. 30, 2010: DepEd started universal kindergarten program in 2011

Jan. 1, 2011 Pre-enrollment starts as DepEd encourages parents to pre-register their children in the public kindergarten program this January to avoid the enrollment rush in May and June.

May 7, 2011: Over one million preschool children signed up during the early-registration campaign conducted in January by the department, Education Secretary Armin Luistro said.

Nov. 21, 2011: DepEd readies plan for K+12 program.

Dec. 16, 2011: DepEd eyed law on K+12 program

Jan. 11, 2012: DepEd introduced enjoyable, less burdensome curriculum under K to 12 such as lessons using the language spoken at home, less contact time, and interactive.

Jan, 30, 2012: Science teaching enhanced in K to 12 curriculum

February 13, 2012: DepEd prepares teachers for K to 12 In preparation for the adoption of the new curriculum under the K to 12 program,as DepEd conducted Test of English Proficiency for Teachers (TEPT) and Process Skills Test (PST) in Science and Math to all Grades 1 and 2 public school teachers nationwide.

March 8, 2012: K to 12 program starts taking off for school year 2013-2014.

March 27, 2012: Kindergarten program received $1.5M grant from the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction (JFPR).

March 31, 2012 DepEd began unclogging the enhanced 12-year curriculum implemented starting with incoming Grade 1 students of SY 2012-2013 and incoming freshmen of SY 2012-2013 will be the first beneficiaries.

April 24, 2012: K to 12 program officially launched.

June 4, 2012: Start of K-12 basic education program amidst criticisms from different sectors.

October 1, 2012: The Committee on Basic Education and Culture approved the substitute bill on the K to 12 Basic Education Program. Through voting, 25 members voted for while two voted against the bill.

November 19, 2012: The Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2012, or House Bill 6643, was approved on third reading.
January 30, 2013: The Senate and the Congress have ratified the Bicameral Conference Committee report on the K to 12 Basic Education Reform program, needing just President Aquino’s signature to make it a law of the land.
May 15, 2013: The Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 or the K to 12 Basic Education Program was signed into law by His Excellency President Benigno S. Aquino III.

President Aquino signed the Enhance Basic Education Act of 2013

The Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 or the K to 12 Basic Education Program was signed into law by His Excellency President Benigno S. Aquino III.

He signed today the K to 12 law, a landmark piece of legislation that institutionalizes 12 years of basic education, making it responsive to global educational standards. The law – which introduces two additional years in secondary education and makes Kindergarten mandatory among 5-year olds – is expected to give graduates better choices in the field of work or further education.

“[Sa K-12] tinitiyak nating sapat at kapaki-pakinabang ang kasanayang naibabahagi sa ating mga mag-aaral,” said the President. ([With K-12] we are making sure that adequate and useful skills are being imparted to our students.) The additional two years after fourth year high school are intended to further hone the skills and talents of students for their chosen career path in arts and sports, technical vocational, entrepreneurship or tertiary education.

Education Secretary Br. Armin A. Luistro FSC, for his part, expressed gratitude to all sectors that helped shepherd the bill into law. “We are particularly grateful to the members of Congress, government agencies, the working groups, and other individuals who share with us the vision of a relevant, responsive and truly 21st century education.”

DepEd is currently preparing for the full implementation of K to 12 in 2016. In school year 2012-2013, the curriculum for Grades 1 and 7 was rolled out. By June of this year (school year 2013-2014), the curriculum for Grades 2 and 8 will be introduced.

Last April 24, I was invited to the launching of a worthy fundraising advocacy which can help a lot of people. As the number 1 Buy and Sell website in the country, Sulit.com.ph in partnership with World Vision as they invited bloggers to bring their pre-loved items and sell it through their website. The total amount of sales will then be matched by Sulit.com.ph, and donated for World Vision’s humanitarian efforts.

Battling out the sickness

I've been working online for almost two years. And I always got flu and fever whenever I worked late at night.

Few years ago, when I was diagnosed with dengue, I was weak and was hospitalized for five days. I almost had a blood transfusion when I found out that my platelet is 50. And during that time, I want to do a lot of things but my immune system makes me really sick.

DepEd increases tuition fee subsidy for Grade 7 students

The Department of Education has increased by 24% the number of slots for Grade 7 students availing of tuition fee subsidy in private schools under the education service contracting scheme (ESC).

Education Secretary Br. Armin A. Luistro said that from 250,896 slots in school year 2012-2013, the ESC slots for Grade 7 students has been increased to 310,709 slots for school year 2013-2014.

ESC is a scheme under the Government Assistance to Students and Teachers in Private Education (GASTPE) wherein the government subsidizes the tuition fee of students who enroll in private schools because public secondary schools cannot accommodate them anymore. It is jointly implemented by DepEd and the Fund for Assistance to Private Education (FAPE).

The subsidy is P6,500 per student in participating schools outside the National Capital Region and P10,000 per student in private schools in the NCR.

“The decision to accommodate more students under the ESC is part of our continuing thrust to democratize access to quality education across the country,” added Luistro.

DepEd and FAPE determined the distribution of Grade 7 slots under the ESC based on public school shortage in the regions, schools division and municipalities. “We also put weight in the participating schools’ compliance to performance-based standards.

Based on DepEd Memo No. 65 series of 2013, the total number of Grade 7 slots comprises the actual number of grantees in the previous school year, which are fixed, plus additional slots in areas where there are serious overcrowding.

Another basis for the allocation of additional slots is the certification/accreditation ratings given to compliant schools as of March 18, 2013.
