The year was 1997. Apple was a struggling computer company, AOL was a booming Internet service provider, Microsoft was on the verge of releasing Windows 98, and the Web was a very different place. Through the magic of the Wayback Machine, we can travel back in time and revisit the past.

Apple

Apple, now the most valuable company in the world, was a struggling computer company back in the ‘90s. Apple’s website from 1997 seems like it’s about a completely different company from the Apple we know today. But even back then, Apple was pushing mobile devices – the eMate 300 in this case, which used Apple’s Newton platform. (It was a flop.)

Google

Google didn’t even have a website in 1997, so I’m cheating a bit here by showing you the page from 1998. The iconic, minimalistic design is present here. Here’s a little-known fact: the only reason Google started with such a simple design is because they didn’t have a webmaster or anyone that knew HTML.

Yahoo

1997 was the pre-Google era, so people used other search engines – like Yahoo. Yahoo was a pretty basic search engine and directory back then, nothing like the jam-packed front page it would become. But then, Yahoo just couldn’t be cluttered back then. It would have taken too long to download over those old dial-up modems.

Microsoft

Microsoft was working on Windows 98 at the time, and their “Where do you want to go today?” slogan featured prominently on their website. The top headline – “Internet Explorer 4.0 Debuts to Critics’ Applause” – seems hilarious in retrospect, with Internet Explorer ultimately becoming a drag on the Internet. At the time, Microsoft was actually trying – and they would keep developing IE until they released version 6, after which they stopped development, leaving the Web to stagnate.

Amazon

I’m going to cheat again because the Wayback Machine doesn’t have any snapshots of Amazon.com from 1997, so here’s a screenshot from 1999. The old Amazon actually looks surprisingly modern. Of course, a big part of this is because Amazon’s website had changed so little until the recent redesign.

AOL

AOL’s website really is a blast from the past. The front page advertises the beta release ofAOL Instant Messenger, which ultimately became very popular. It even offers a free AOL trial, which brought many people online for the first time.

GeoCities

If you were around in the ‘90s, I’m sure you remember GeoCities. Instead of creating blogs, people created their own personal websites – and they usually looked horrible. GeoCities was shut down in 2009, but it faded away and died many years before.

The New York Times

The New York Times shows us what a newspaper website used to be like. The website attempts to bring the familiar newspaper-style layout to a browser – luckily, newspaper websites have advanced since then. It’s also amusing to see that the early versions of Internet Explorer were considered “complex” in their time.

AltaVista

If you weren’t using Yahoo, there’s a good chance you were using AltaVista. AltaVista now just redirects to Yahoo’s search results, and Yahoo is just a frontend to Microsoft’s Bing.

The White House

The White House didn’t have a shiny website back then – the website’s front page was the “White House Virtual Library.” It offered the ability to browse and search a variety of documents. No splashy front page with the latest news and high-resolution images of the president here, just a glorified search engine with a background that made the content harder to read.

One day, someone will write about how ancient the Web looked back in 2012 and marvel at how backwards we were.

Tips and Tricks To Upgrade Your Android

Hi Friends,
The biggest problem with the Android platform has been how slowly many phone makers release the latest version of the OS for their older models. It's also not unusual for them to never do so. (A company may not want to spend resources on phones they no longer sell; or, they and the carrier for a particular model may not agree on when to provide an update.)

If you own such a neglected phone, and don't want to buy a new one, then your best shot is installing unofficial Android firmware on it.

The following is a primer on what you should know about the process of installing unauthorized Android
firmware. Each phone can have its own unique steps for doing this, so you should follow instructions for your specific model.

1. INSTALL AT YOUR OWN RISK

Installing unofficial OS firmware on your phone will likely render whatever warranty from its maker you have on it null and void.

Thoroughly read the installation instructions for your specific phone model and then follow them carefully, taking time and patience. Though the odds of bricking your phone -- rendering it inoperable because of something going wrong during the install process -- is fairly low, it can happen and especially so if you rush through things.

Be aware that some features on your phone running its current version of Android may no longer be available after you successfully install a custom Android firmware. Other features could be buggy or have quirks.

2. TWO CHOICES: CYANOGENMOD OR MIUI

In the unofficial Android firmware development community, there are two major choices: CyanogenMod andMIUI. Both are built on the Android source code officially released by Google, and their latest versions are based on Android 2.3 (codenamed Gingerbread). As of this writing, the volunteer development teams of both projects are working to get new versions built on Android 4.0 ("Ice Cream Sandwich").

What's the difference between the two? CyanogenMod sticks with the basic, default components of Android that come with its source code release; its UI is "clean," devoid of unnecessary extras. MIUI completely overhauls the stock Android UI with one that resembles that of Apple's iOS.

If your Android phone is (or was) a popular model, it is probably supported by either the CyanogenMod or MIUIcommunity.

If not, there is still a chance that somebody may be working on a port for your specific phone; search its model name in the official community forums for CyanogenMod or MIUI to see if there is such an on-going effort. (An excellent source to check is Android Forums.) But know that some or several features of your phone may not work if you install such an experimental, work-in-progress build of CyanogenMod or MIUI that is not officially sanctioned by that OS's community.

3. ROOT YOUR PHONE

Before you can start to do anything to your phone, you'll need to root it, which means basically to unlock the security settings put in place in the OS to prevent it from being altered. Check out GingerBreak to help you conveniently root your phone.

Unfortunately, this app tool might not work on more recent Android phones. This guide provides a list of instructions for rooting several specific phone models.

4. BACK UP YOUR CURRENT FIRMWARE AND PHONE DATA

You really want to do this if you need to re-install your phone's original firmware and data later (e.g., something goes wrong when you install the unofficial Android firmware; you decide you don't like CyanogenMod or MIUI; or, you need to reactivate your phone with its carrier, something which you cannot do when running either of these unofficial OSs on it).

The easiest way to do a back-up is to install ClockworkMod ROM Manager on your phone. Run this app, and select "Reboot into Recovery" from its menu. This downloads and installs a recovery image profile for your phone, restarts it, and loads a plain-looking text menu, where you can select the back-up process.

After the copy of your phone's firmware and data is made, you can move it to a computer for safekeeping. Connect your phone by USB cable to your computer, then simply drag-and-drop the backup's folder (it's on your phone's SD card under the folder "clockworkmod") from your phone's SD card to the latter device.

5. PREPARE GOOGLE'S DEFAULT ANDROID APPS FOR INSTALLATION

If you're installing CyanogenMod: Unless you want to keep your to-be-upgraded phone clean of Google apps, you'll need to install them separately. CyanogenMod does not include the standard Google apps that typically come pre-installed on an Android phone. So you'll have to download a ZIP file that contains the installation packages for apps such as Google Search and, most importantly, the Android Market. Put this ZIP in the main root directory of your phone's SD card.

6. INSTALL THE CUSTOM ANDROID FIRMWARE

This is the big deal. Download the CyanogenMod or MIUI firmware designed specifically for your phone model, which comes in the form of a ZIP package, and save it in the root directory of your phone's SD card.

Once again, run the ClockworkMod ROM Manager app, and select "Reboot into Recovery." After your phone restarts into the ClockworkMod Recovery tool, you may need to wipe out its data and cache, and format its "/system" directory -- this depends on whether you are installing CyanogenMod or MIUI, so you should refer to the instructions that specifically are for your phone.

Next, you select the ZIP file of the custom Android firmware you placed in the root directory of your phone's SD card, and start the upgrade process. It normally takes less than two minutes. If you're upgrading to CyanogenMod: Don't reboot your phone just yet... repeat the above step for the ZIP file containing the Google Android apps.

You return to the main menu of the ClockworkMod Recovery tool and select to reboot your phone. After about 2 minutes, it should boot and then run on the custom Android firmware.

7. ENJOY YOUR NEW ANDROID PHONE!

Besides updating your phone to a more recent version of Android, CyanogenMod and MIUI can also give it new features and tools, which include better power management, Wi-Fi tethering, stronger security settings, and broader personal customization of the UI. Many users report their phones run faster with one of these unofficial OSs than with the version of Android that came originally installed on it.

Google Map 3D now Shows You Helicopter

Google is adding a new "helicopter view" option for directions in Google Maps, enabling you to see your trip from above in full 3D glory. Google is making use of its Earth view engine for this and it's a great way of both making people aware that they can see 3D content in Google Maps but also a way making trip planning more fun.

"Getting directions is one of the most popular features on Google Maps, whether it be for driving, walking, biking or transit," Paul Yang, a Google Maps engineer, wrote.

"Today, we are launching a new feature that allows you to bring your upcoming trip to life, by allowing you to preview your route in 3D," he announced.

The feature is now available to all users, but you need the Earth view plugin to make use of it. Enabling the feature is easy. Just plan out a route, like usual.

You'll see the regular directions page, but there is now a 3D button next to the starting point. Hitting it will switch from the 2D map view to the 3D Earth view.

Then you'll be able to follow along as your trip is played back via the 3D engine. You can pause it at any moment and then move around, zoom in and check out the view from different angles.

You can also jump directly to another part of the trip by clicking on any step from the list on the left. Of course, once you're done, you can switch back to the 2D view by clicking on the 2D button.

The big caveat is that you have to install the Google Earth plugin for any of this to work. The plugin is available for most browsers on Windows, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Mac OS X, Google Chrome, Safari, Firefox. Linux users are out of luck.

Microsoft Uses De-Blurring Technology To Clarify Bing Maps

Bing receives a lot of flack as a search engine, but it has some cool features. One of them is Bing Maps, a robust competitor to Google Maps – and it’s now a bit sharper than before.

Clarity comes courtesy of a de-blurring algorithm developed by Microsoft. Originally intended for consumer cameras, it has been adapted to help de-blur images on Bing Maps. A crisp satellite image is an obvious ideal, but due to the motion of the satellites and/or planes used to take photographs, blur can sometimes rear its fuzzy head – and, as most amateur photographers know, it becomes more prevalent the further a camera zooms in.

As you can see in the example above, the results aren’t game-changing but they are impressive. Small features on the houses photographed become visible and trees look less like poorly defined green blobs.

This de-blurring algorithm provides Bing Maps with a small advantage over the competition. Since it can be used on any image it’s possible that Bing could have clearer maps even if the source photos were identical.

After releasing OneNote, Lync 2010, Document Connection and PowerPoint Broadcast for Symbian 2 months ago, the full Office Mobile app is now available for Nokia 701, Nokia 700, Nokia 603, Nokia E7, Nokia X7, Nokia C7, Nokia Oro and Nokia C6-01. Owners of these devices can get the Office app by using the Nokia Software Update tool or by connecting the device to Nokia PC Suite.

These versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint were designed especially for Symbian, and according to Nokia, “because these apps were created by Microsoft, the functionality are as close as possible – if not the same – to the Microsoft Office apps on your PC”.

The full MS Office Mobile app will also arrive for the Nokia N8, Nokia E6 and Nokia 500 sometime in the future, and will be included in the Nokia 808 PureView when it launches. The apps should also arrive at the Nokia Store in a few weeks.

The all new iPhone 5 is already buzzing with speculation. Will the new iPhone 5 be a complete redesign? Yes! Korea's IT News reported that the iPhone 5 is likely to be housed in "Liquidmetal". Liquid metal is the industrial name for an alloy of nickel, titanium, zirconium, copper and other metals. Apple was granted rights to use it in August of 2010. The current Apple iPhone release wasn't much to rave about, although people do really like Siri, the personal assistant. However, the new iPhone 5 is going to have some amazing new hardware and features like 3D video and pictures, newly designed keyboards and 4G speeds to name a few! This is made possible by the new A6 processor which will also be featured in the iPad 3.

This phone is going to be loaded with awesome new features like video chat on 3g and 4g (no longer restricted to WiFi only), face recognition and extreme downloading with 4G. (List of possible features below). The new iPhone 5 features are speculated, but have been well received by the public and will typically follow suit based on previous releases and their features.

Like the recently release iPad 3, this new iPhone 5 will be equipped with a dual core A5X chip processors, much like the iPhone 4s (A5) and higher

more powerful graphic chips that can deliver higher video resolutions (5-9 times better and 7 times faster) and amazing "still" images when taking pictures, AND it will make multi-tasking a lot faster, in addition to adding support for 4G speeds.
