New Australia immigration rules for UAE applicants from July 01

Applications for a skilled labour immigration visa to Australia are to be registered through SkillSelect, a programme designed to match labour demand with supply.

The government of Australia has introduced significant reforms to the skilled labour immigration programme last month.

The employer nomination scheme (ENS) and the regional sponsored migration scheme (RSMS) have been integrated with a new skilled migrant selection register named SkillSelect.

The changes came into place on July first and embody the ‘expression of interest’ approach, where applicants for a skilled labour visa register online expressing interest to migrate to Australia.

The government can then select and invite applicants based on the skilled labour demand.

“These new arrangements are designed to better respond to labour market demands and form part of ongoing reform of the skilled migration programme,” a Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) spokesman was quoted as saying on the Department’s official website.

“This will give the government greater control and flexibility to adjust to changes in the economy.

“Sponsors must also demonstrate they have a genuine need for the workers and that the skills required cannot be found in their region,” he added.

According to Rasheed Backer, registered migration agent (RMA) of Australian Immigration and Citizenship Services the new system has advantages and disadvantages for the applicant.

“Now the applicant does not need to pay for a visa application. He can register online by answering all the questions posed; it is a very simple system,” he explains adding that the application would previously cost the applicant over Dh11,000.

However, the simplicity can be deceptive.

“When the government decides to invite the applicant he needs to be able to support all his qualifications with official documents and a visa can easily be denied when these documents are not presented correctly,” Rasheed points out.

“It may look simple, but the applicant would still need to make sure that all required paper work is available. He still needs to do the IELTS (test of English for higher education, immigration and employment) test.”

Whereas the old system required the applicant to have a minimum of 65 points the new system allows applicants with 60 points to register.

“But selection with this minimum is less likely to be seen,” thinks Rasheed.

“A person applying with 60 points will probably not hear anything in the first six months, whereas a person applying with 70 points is more likely to be selected.

“Your qualifications are more important than the time of application. Among those with the same rank in points there will be a first come, first pick principle.

“But the government will consider higher-qualified applicants first.”

According to Rasheed immigration to Australia is all about skills.

“There is a shortage of skills in Australia at the moment. The government is keen on inviting migrants to the country but applies a very tough selection procedure.

“You need to have at least three years of experience in the field to be considered.”

The new system is in his eyes a tool for the government to increase control over the immigration procedure, as it does not need to legitimise its decisions.

“With the old system people paid money for their application. When they would not receive a response they could make an appeal, and they did.

“Now registration is free of charge, and the applicant will be in the system for two years. Within those two years the government has the freedom to decide who to select and when.”

The latter could mean more uncertainty for the applicant.

Apart from the fact that selection can be anytime, it is unclear how many people will be invited every month as this depends on demand of the labor market.

“In July, 90 people were invited,” tells Rasheed. “I am not sure, but I believe that was from applicants of all countries.”

In the same month Rasheed received 70 applications through his office only.

“The Australian government said they would invite a large number of applicants in August,” Rasheed added.

People who have applied for a skilled worker visa before July 1, 2012 will not be subjected to the new rules and will have to wait for a response to their application according to the old system.

Immigration from UAE: Canada announces new rules

More weight to proficiency in one of two Canada's official languages - English or French

CIC has announced the three-pronged approach to the Canadian immigration program, largely affecting the Federal Skilled Worker Programme.

The Canadian government has announced proposed amendments to Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA), which include changes to the Federal Skilled Worker Class (FSWC) and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), as well as it introduces a new Federal Skilled Trades Class (FSTC).

This was reported by various regulated immigration consultants, although the official government body Citizenship & Immigration Canada (CIC) has not yet published the news on its website.

The proposed amendments are referred to as the three-pronged approach, but mostly affects the FSWC, Canada's flagship Immigration selection programme.

According to Deepak Kohli, President of Transcend Consultants, a regulated Canadian-based immigration consultancy office, the new FSW programme is likely to favour immigrants who are younger, have Canadian work experience and better language skills.

“The new Federal Skilled Worker Class (FSWC) will require the applicants to be assessed against the revised selection grid that gives more weight to proficiency in one of the two Canada's official languages (English or French), and prefers younger applicants, while giving lower weight to work experience outside of Canada,” Deepak explained.

The second prong of the change includes revision to the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), tells Deepak. The minimum work experience requirements will be brought back to 12 months instead of 24 and language requirements will be streamlined with these regulations.

The third prong is the introduction of the Federal Skilled Trades Class (FSTC).

“The new FSTC would be open to skilled tradespersons with experience in the occupational areas such as industrial, electrical and construction trades; maintenance and equipment operation trades; supervisors and technical occupations in natural resources, agriculture and related production; processing, manufacturing and utilities supervisors and central control operators; as well as chefs and cooks, and bakers and butchers.

“Applicants to the proposed program would be required to meet four minimum requirements that include ability to work in one of the trades (job offer or assessed qualifications); proficiency in official languages; previous work experience in the selected trades and meet the employment requirements of the selected trade.” The regulations are expected to be implemented in January 2012 but may be revised based on public consultations.

High-tech security cameras on Dubai streets soon

Dubai authorities intend to install advanced security cameras on the city’s streets within the next few days as part of an ongoing plan to control crime, a senior police officer was reported on Thursday as saying.

The new cameras will also monitor traffic on roads and are among the most advanced security photographic devices, said Brigadier Khalil Al Mansoori, director of the criminal investigation department.

“The cameras will be installed in several areas in the next few days…they are not many but have advanced features,” he told the Arabic language daily Alittihad.

The paper said the new cameras are part of a Dh500-million plan approved by Dubai’s authorities to deploy high-tech security cameras through the Gulf’s business and tourism hub to control crime and road traffic.

Around 25,000 security cameras currently dot the streets of the city of more than two million. “We have a plan to extend the use of these cameras to all places and areas in a way that will not violate people’s privacy,” Mansoori said.

Hawkers in Meena Bazaar say tourists are top buyers

They were already waiting in anticipation as this reporter parked her car and ventured out in the sweltering heat of Meena Bazaar.

“Designer bags, madam?” whispered one of the pack members. “We have Gucci, LV, Hermes, you name it madam. All for good price.”

Taking no more than two steps and another enterprising salesperson stepped forth to practice the same pitch, this time quoting a starting price of these so-called ‘designer handbags’ at just Dh89.

Thwarting a few more wayside entrepreneurs, curiosity and the rising mercury in the outdoors thriving market of Bur Dubai got the better of me, and I agreed to check out a few of these bargain buys.

Snaking through the narrow alleyways, Syed stopped in front of a residential building that has seen better days, informing us the store was in fact on the mezzanine floor, away from prying eyes (read authorities here).

With the cellphone clutched in hand, ready to call for help, the broken steps led me to the cleaner confines of a storeroom of sorts, packed with goods that easily cost millions in losses to the world’s top designers and fashion houses, all courtesy the fake, counterfeit market.

Shelves upon shelves were bursting with the mentioned brands, along with Fendi, Prada, Miu Miu, Mulberry, Dior, Aigner – the mind boggled.

Bargain buys

“These are all real ones madam,” came Syed’s eager response to the unspoken question.
However, it didn’t take long for the truth to spill out with a little probing.

He explained: “These are real madam. They come from the same manufacturing plants in China that make the expensive bags you see in showrooms. However, these are made from leftover materials or are rejected items due to some scratches or other defects.

“People don’t find a few defects if you can get it for a good price; so we ship them here and sell them.”

Syed’s story is repeated over and over as we make our way through the cubbyhole shops that are hidden away in buildings and backyard storage rooms across Bur Dubai.

Mathan, another such enterprising sales person, pawning off a Hermes $10,000 bag for a mere Dh230, said: “People love buying Louis Vuitton handbags. They are cheap also, with a medium-sized bag costing only Dh140.”

Five minutes later, the cost was reduced to Dh100 when this reporter chose to walk away.

Tourist takers

Babu, who called himself the oldest seller of ‘designer’ bags in Meena Bazaar, said the biggest buyers of such counterfeit goods are the tourists, mainly from the UK, followed by Russia.

“Those Indians from England (British Asians) are our biggest buyers; at least purchasing eight to 10 bags per trip. Plus they aren’t tight fisted with their money, so we don’t bargain at all,” beamed Babu.

Almost prophesising, a group of British Asian tourists are led in through the doors by Babu’s sidekick minutes later who reveal they are holidaying here from Manchester.

Tia Kamath, who is an ad executive back in England, said: “This is outrageous stuff here. My cousins who travelled over to Dubai last year told me about this place, this Meena Bazaar. So we had to come over.

“There is no way anyone back home will even recognise this isn’t an original.”

Babu said shipments arrive once every few weeks, packaged within the goods that are shipped from China as legitimate items.

Before I could further my query, he added: “We are backdoor office of the shops down below,” sweeping a hand across the window that looked out over the bustling Meena Bazaar.

“They sell the cheap goods publicly while the real business takes place up here, in these buildings.”

Syed didn’t contradict Babu’s story, but added: “There are different ways to get these goods in.

“They come from China, made in the mainland and then shipped via Hong Kong so authorities don’t suspect these are not real ones.”

But then many simply look the other.

“Here we hide and sell, but in the Dragon Mart, these goods are sold openly,” said Syed. “Surely there isn’t anything wrong in doing so.”

Fighting back

Last year, designer label Louis Vuitton fought back via a lawsuit to teach counterfeiters a lesson.

In a statement, the fashion house said: ‘The fight against counterfeiting is a long-term element of Louis Vuitton’s worldwide sustainability strategy.

‘…One of the biggest threats to that survival today is counterfeiting, whose effects go far beyond buying a cheap bag on a street in a faraway city while on holiday.

‘Following its respect for creativity and protection of intellectual property, Louis Vuitton has a zero tolerance policy to counterfeiting…’

Recently, Harper’s Bazar magazine stated that the selling of counterfeit goods counts for almost 10 per cent of all goods sold in worldwide.

This percentage translates to an estimated loss of $512 billion per year in the global market, or $20 billion to American companies alone.

While several fashion houses have collaborated to fight off the menace via raids and lawsuits, protecting one’s intellectual property rights bears no meaning for people like Syed, Mathan and Babu.

Quiz them if they are aware of what they are doing is a criminal offense, Mathan replied: “Madam, I have a family back home in Kerala to feed. Letting them starve to death, isn’t that a bigger crime?”

His words are cut short as the bell tinkled the arrival of another group of ‘Indians from England’ as they hurried over to fuss over a collection of Prada and Fendi bags.

Until there’s a market for it, they will find a way to sell; it’s as simple as that.

Dubai, although a Muslim emirate, is one of the most liberal of all emirates in the Middle East. However, there are some definite rules that need to be followed, in order to avoid any faux-pas, so as to not offend the local populace. Further, these tips may help you in taking care of everything that you need to, before planning a travel to Dubai.

Best time to plan a visit to Dubai

The best time to visit Dubai is during the period November and April, as the weather is rather pleasant during this phase (with temperatures in the low 30s). During the summer months, Dubai is horribly hot with temperatures even going up to 48°C. The Ramadan period may seem to be a good period to visit, only if you are interested in Islam. But, if you plan to shop and indulge yourself in the best foods served at restaurants and bars in Dubai, then the Ramadan period is best avoided. The exact dates of Ramadan vary from year to year.

There are plenty of sporting activities hosted by Dubai, including the Desert Classic, Dubai Tennis Championships and Rugby Sevens. If you are a sports buff, you may consider visiting Dubai during this period.

Travelling with Children

Small children are welcome in Dubai, just as in any other part of the world. Dubai is a destination that kids would love to visit, as there are plenty of activities for children, both in and around the star hotels, special amusement parks, green areas, museums, swimming pools, theme parks, and entertainment centres. The bigger hotels offer a good choice of kids’ meals, apart from baby-sitting services available at main hotels, if required.

Women Travellers

Dubai is a safe destination for women travellers. Women are permitted to drive, work etc, and lead a liberal lifestyle here, in comparison to several other Gulf counterparts. However, you may be in for unwanted attention if you are travelling alone. Women travellers should be aware that they are visiting a place that adheres to strong traditional roots. It would probably be better if you plan a relaxed visit and stay in one of the four or five star accommodations in Dubai, so that you can use the private beach facilities in the hotel. It is better to avoid wearing tight or revealing clothes when travelling away from the beach clubs and resorts. For instance, loose trousers and long sleeved cotton shirt may fit the bill. When socializing in local company, it is better to wait until a hand is offered to you for a handshake, as some devout Muslims do not prefer to shake hands with women. In UAE, usually women are given priority and attended first at banks, post offices, police stations, while the government offices have a separate queue for women.

Travellers with special needs

The Dubai International Airport has a special handling area for passengers with special needs. Therefore, wheelchair passengers will receive more personalized service. Several star hotels have rooms specifically meant for use of the disabled, while even major shopping malls have good access and facilities for people with special needs. Even the Transport Taxis in Dubai are fitted to accommodate wheelchairs.

Accommodation

Accommodation in Dubai is highly expensive. So plan in advance. The room rates drop considerably during peak summer, but, it may not be the best time to enjoy an outing in Dubai. Dubai has several other good and decent two-star accommodations too. If you find the five-star hotels too expensive, you may choose to stay in the two-star, and use the rest of your money food, purchase, and entertainment. Larger families can consider a shared accommodation.

Health

The UAE is one of the very few nations that do not have any reported cases of holiday sickness, as reported by leading international magazines. This is due to major success of government immunization programs, the high standards of hygiene maintained in hotels and restaurants, and availability of clean drinking water.

As for vaccinations, no special immunizations are required. But, it would do good to find out in advance whether the area you are visiting is free from health-risks. Tetanus injections are usually recommended, if you are considering a long trip. Polio has been eradicated. Hepatitis A is rare, and can be avoided if precautions are taken. Hepatitis B, C, D is transmitted only through sexual contact, blood transfusions or use of un-sterilized needles. Mosquitoes are few in towns and cities, therefore it is not considered as a risk. In any case, it is better to use a suitable insect repellent, to avoid being bitten.

Dubai, being a hot city, the sun can be fierce all through the year, and travellers are at risk of heatstroke or heat exhaustion. Therefore, ensure that you carry adequate sunglasses, hats, and sun creams.

The medical facilities are generally very good in public hospitals, and may deal an emergency free of charge. However, it is wise to carry medical insurance to cover all eventualities, as, if you need to visit a private hospital, the treatment can be quite expensive.

Most medicines are available at the pharmacies. Some pharmacies open 24 hours a day. The Municipality emergency number, 04 2232323, lists the location of open chemists.

There are good dentists available, including orthodontists.

Personal Safety and Security

The UAE, particularly Dubai, is a safe place to visit. It is designated as one of the safest holiday destinations by the international travel industry. However, it is wise to carry travel insurance and follow normal precautions to safeguard yourself and your valuables.

Due to the low crime rates in Dubai, it ensures a trouble-free stay for visitors. Nevertheless, you are advised to take care of your valuables in busy public places and when using the public transport. Further, due to the present international scenario, visitors to Middle Eastern nations are advised to remain vigilant due to threat of terrorism. Special care is required when visiting entertainment venues that are largely western-oriented. Further, avoid participating in any sort of political gathering or demonstration.

Tipping

Although tipping is not expected, it is a common practice to do so. For the staff at hotels, gratuities are given based on one’s discretion. Majority of the restaurants include service charges to the bill. In case this is not included, you may add 10percent of the total to the bill value. However, taxi drivers do not expect to be tipped. Supermarket baggers, bag carriers and windscreen washers at petrol stations are generally given Dhs 2.

Photography

The films are readily available, and so are the processing facilities and colour prints. It is better to ask people before photographing. Avoid photographing Muslim women. Avoid taking photographs of docks, airports, government buildings, and telecommunication equipment, military and industrial installations.

Alcohol

Alcohol is permitted in Dubai. It can be purchased at the Duty Free Shop at the airport (limit per person is four bottles), as it cannot be purchased in the supermarkets or liquor stores here, unless you are a Dubai resident with an alcohol license. Dubai does not allow consuming alcohol on the streets. Drinking and driving is strictly prohibited. Also, no alcohol will be served on public holidays, periods of mourning, or in public places.

Drugs

Dubai has absolutely no tolerance towards drug offences, and you may face serious consequences if caught. Dubai has its own regulations regarding controlled drugs. So, if visiting with prescription medicine, it is better to verify if your medicines have any particular restrictions. For instance, Tylenol 3 is restricted due to the presence of codeine in it. So it is best to check before travel. Also, if you are travelling with prescription medicine, it is better to carry only the amount required for your travel.

Sex

Public display of affection should be avoided, as it is considered offensive. Dubai follows the Sharia law, and hence, unmarried couples who are travelling together will have to look for separate accommodations. Homosexuality is also not permitted in any part of the UAE.

Visas

It is best to check with your local embassies for visa requirements, as they are likely to change often. Majority of nationals enter Dubai on a tourist visa for nearly 60 days. Some are not permitted entry without a valid visa on arrival. Check with your travel agent and confirm the visa requirements for your country, before planning your trip to Dubai.

Driving

When on a visit visa, you are allowed to use International driving license. But, when you are a resident, you will have to apply for a Dubai driving license. Dubai sticks to left-hand driving. Drinking and driving can attract huge fines, imprisonment, lashing or deportation. In case of any accident, remain there with your car, and call the police, who will handle it as per the local laws. Speeding is common in Dubai, and therefore, if you do not follow traffic rules, the chances of you being knocked out are also common. Taxis are expensive in Dubai, and therefore, renting a car is considered a better option.

Dubai Customs

UAE, being tax-free country with little import duties, there are few restrictions on the items that you are allowed to bring in and take out of the country. Dubai is liberal about the duty-free allowances, wherein nearly 2000 cigarettes, 400 cigars and 2kgs of tobacco are permitted. Alcohol is allowed to be imported only by non-Muslims.

Dubai forbids import of firearms or dangerous weapons, religious propaganda, unstrung pearls, and raw sea food.

Other general information

The Tourism Department has set up a series of tourist information bureaus in the city. Each of these offices will issue maps and brochures about the hotspots in the city, and other information on public transportation, shopping and accommodation.

The information counter at the Dubai Airport is open 24 hours. The main bureaus in the city are located in Baniyas Square and on SHK Zayed Road, while the smaller bureaus are located in several main shopping centres in the city.

Time

The UAE is four hours ahead of GMT, and there is not time change during summer.

Electricity

Domestic supply is 220 volts.

Weights and Measures

The UAE uses the metric system, although even the British and US standard weights and measures are understood.

Clothing

Typical light-weight summer clothing is ideal for Dubai weather. Usually casual clothing is used. It is best to avoid swimsuits, shorts, bikinis, and revealing tops, and confine it to beach resorts.

Toilets

Most public toilets at the shopping centres, museums, public gardens, are clean and well-maintained. The public toilets in souq and bus stations usually have only gents toilet. On the city outskirts, although there are public toilets available at petrol stations and restaurants, they usually lack toilet paper and may not be in good condition.

Food and water

The standard of food hygiene and water quality is usually high, especially in larger centres, although in smaller cafes of remote areas, one cannot be very sure about the conditions. Water is usually desalinated, and so normally safe to drink, but, it better to use bottled water, and you may need to drink plenty of it, in the scorching Dubai heat.

Money

The United Arab Emirates Dirham (UAE Dirham) is the local currency in Dubai. There are no currency restrictions in the UAE, and all major currencies in the world are accepted and exchanged. Bank notes come in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 dirham, while coins are used in denominations of 25 and 50 fils and 1 dirham. The dirham is pegged to the US dollar.

All banks in Dubai offer cash withdrawal facilities from ATM’s scattered across major hotels and malls. Do not involve in money exchanges on the streets, as it is not a permissible transaction, due to the possibility of fraudulent notes being offered.

Internet

Most five-star hotels in Dubai offer internet accessibility to their guests with cheaper rates between 7pm to 7am.

Post

The General Post Authority in Dubai is quite efficient. The post offices function from 8am to 11.30pm (Saturday to Wednesday), while on Thursdays it functions from 8am to 1pm and from 4pm to 8pm. Fridays are closed. In Dubai, the main post office is located at Zaizabeel Road, Bur Dubai. The smaller post offices are scattered in Deira, Satwa, Karama and Jumeirah.

Shopping hours

Normal shopping hours are from 9:00am to 1:00pm and from 4:00pm to 10:00pm, although majority of the shops stay open all day. Some supermarkets are even open all 24 hours. However, on Fridays, being the Islamic day of rest, all shops close for prayers between 11.30am to 1:30pm.

Office working hours

All government establishments work from 7:30am to 3:00pm. But private offices have their own working hours that are usually longer. The government offices are usually closed for their weekend holiday at mid-day on Thursday, and open only from Saturdays. The weekend holiday of private offices, however, may vary.

Language

Arabic is the main language in Dubai. Majority of the local people here can understand and speak English.

Religion and etiquette

Dubai strictly adheres to the Islamic Laws. Islam, being the official religion in Dubai, it is better to not publicly criticize or distribute any material against it.

Eating in public is prohibited from sunrise to sunset during the month of Ramadan.

Other common western habits that attract stiff penalties are swearing, rude remarks, public display of affection, choices of clothing such as women revealing bare arms, legs or midriff.

Also refrain from eating, drinking or smoking in public places between sunrise and sunset, during the month of Ramadan.

Taking photographs of sensitive UAE military and civilian sites or foreign diplomatic missions could result in arrest, detention, and prosecution by local authorities. Further, engaging in mapping activities using GPS equipment, without co-ordination of UAE authorities, will have serious consequences.

What are speed grace margins for Dubai roads

Residents confused over supposed variations in place on different roads

Responding to residents’ confusion over speed limits and grace speed margins, Dubai Police has clarified that the grace speed limit is 20kmph on most roads in the emirate.

Most roads in the city of Dubai have a grace margin over an allowed speed limit for that road. This means that where the maximum speed on a road may be 100kmph, the radar will get you at just over 120kmph, for example.

Residents have been unsure about internal city roads such as Al Wasl Road or Beach Road where common understanding is that the grace speed limit is just 10kmph over and over the prescribed speed limit of 70kmph.

Elsewhere in the emirate, most roads such as Sheikh Zayed Road or Al Khail or Emirates Road allow for 20kmph over and above the notified speed limit.

“Because the maximum speed is the number appearing on the traffic boards along the road, the grace speed can only be found out through flirting with the speed radar. A little too much of advancement can easily result in a fine, at least,” says George KV.

“It’s good that the police has clarified the grace limit. I can now drive in a more relaxed manner and not have anxiety if I am over-speeding. Also, those who speed up between radars and slow down when one approaches, can now drive at a more regular pace,” he added.

S. Kumar, an Indian motorist tells that he always drives at a 70 kmph speed on Jumeirah Road, until his colleague told him that she passes the same road at a 90 kmph. “We had a discussion about the grace speed there. She told me that she had never been fined at that speed. But I was not sure enough to try the same.”

To make things more clear, the Traffic Department of Dubai Police clarified the speed limit and grace speed at five major roads in Dubai; Sheikh Zayed Road, Emirates Road, Al Wasl Road, Jumeirah Road, and Al Khail Road, with two different speed limits existing on Sheikh Zayed Road.

In response to the announcement of Abu Dhabi traffic authorities that the grace speed will gradually be reduced to be zero by the start of 2013, Colonel Zaif Mohayer AlMazroi furthermore clarified that no such measure has been discussed for the emirate of Dubai.

'The Dark Knight Rises' is off to an IMAX start after a day of no-show

Christopher Nolan’s epic Batman series has finally risen after suffering a minor setback on Friday following a technical snag at the IMAX screening.

All shows on Friday were cancelled with the movie showcaser Grand Cinemas offering a full refund to the tickets.

The issue was resolved within the day, with all shows resuming from 9am on Saturday.

“The issue was resolved last night and all screenings to ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ have resumed,” confirmed Andy Fordham of the Grand Cinemas.

The update was also posted on their official Facebook page.

“GREAT NEWS. After 5 hours on the phone with IMAX in CANADA we have resolved the problem affecting all IMAX sessions today. We have been testing for last one hour and all is back to normal with the sound. The next session at 9.15pm will run as normal,” wrote Andy.

Soon after the issue surfaced, Grand Cinemas used their social media network to report about how their IMAX projection system suffered a technical fault at 3am on August 17.

“We are flying in an IMAX technician from UK who is bringing the part to fix the problem tonight. All things going to plan then we will be up and running again less than 24 hours after the fault occurred,” wrote Fordham.

The customers who had booked for the Friday shows were offered three options – a full refund plus a free regular ticket, partial refund of Dh25 plus a regular ticket to ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ on Friday and a free regular ticket, or a transfer to another IMAX show plus a voucher for free regular movie.

Although the issue spoilt the plans of many eager Batfans, the audience was forgiving. “Was sitting in the hall waiting for the movie to start at 3.30 am...bt yeah can't help it...technical faults...no one to blame!” facebooked Cibby Cherian .

The back-up plan was also appreciated. “Guys you did the best that you could..you are true amazing dealer with customer satisfaction :D,” Mohammed Slaiman.

Some customers, however, weren’t as lucky.

Cleona Godinho-Pathak posted on facebook that the ticketing officer was confused and refunded them Dh25 each for 4 IMAX tickets plus the tickets for another IMAX show.

“However, we did not get four free tickets to use for another movie as you mentioned in the posting above. How and where do we get these?”

The Christian Bale-starrer Batman tale had already witnessed a month-long delay in its release as local distributers did not wish to showcase it during the holy month of Ramadan.

Dubai Traffic Police not to impose fines during Eid

Good news for motorists in Dubai.

There will be no traffic fines issued during the Eid holidays.

However, warning motorists against mistaking the Dubai Traffic Police’s kind gesture for a free pass to traffic violations, Acting Head of Traffic Department, Col Saif Mohair Al Mazrouei, said, “There will be no compromise and tolerance of abuse of roads.”

He was quoted by local daily Gulf Today as saying, “Dubai Traffic Police will celebrate Eid Al Fitr by issuing congratulatory cards to minor violations and “with gentle and friendly advice” instead of fines.”

Al Mazrouei said the issuance of congratulatory cards would start on the first day of Eid and continue through the Eid holidays.

“The cards also serve as a tool of awareness to the motorists to be alert and protect their lives and that of other road users. These are also a message of love and happiness from us to the people we serve,” he said.

He strongly cautioned the public against “turning the happiness into misery and tragedy.

“If the drivers follow simple basic traffic rules such as avoiding overspeeding or overtaking illegally, they can easily have a safe Eid for themselves and other road users,” he said.

Meanwhile, police patrols will be beefed up on major highways like Emirates Road, Bypass and Ras Al Khor roads.

Eid: Free parking, Metro timings extended

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced the service timings for availing different RTA services during the forthcoming Eid Al Fitr holidays via customer service centers, paid parking zones, public buses, Dubai Metro, marine transit means, driving schools and vehicles' testing and registration centers.

Ahmed Mahboob, Director of RTA Customer Service, announced that Customer Service Centers would be off during the Eid holidays starting from 29 Ramadan and would resume duty on 4 Shawwal (4th day of the Eid).

All paid parking zones in the emirate of Dubai would be free to use, except for the parking lots of the Fish Market and the multi-level parking as of 29 Ramadan and fees system would be reactivated on 4 Shawwal.

Mahboob continued: "The RTA will extend the working hours of the Dubai Metro during the Eid holiday and the service will start at 5:50am and continue up to 1:00am (past midnight).

Buses

“During the Eid holidays, the timing of public buses will be as follows: Main Stations (such as Gold Souq and Al Ghubaiba) will start at 06:00am and remain open up to 00:00 (midnight).

“Subsidiary stations (such as Satwa, Al Qusais, Al Qouz Industrial, and Jebel Ali) will also start at 06:00am and remain open up to 00:00 (midnight). Metro Feeder Bus Stations at Rashidiya, Mall of the Emirates, Ibn Battuta, Abu Hail ,Burj Khalifa and Etisalat will offer service from 06:00am up to 01:00am.

"During the Eid holiday the timing of commercial buses and inter-city bus service during the Eid holiday will be as follows: Main Stations (like Ghubaiba) will remain operational 24 hours a day, while subsidiary stations (such as Sabkha, Union Square, Deira City Center and Karama) will be on duty from 06:00am up to 00:00 (midnight).

“External stations (such as Sharjah-Bur Dubai) will be on service round-the-clock during the Eid holidays, while Sharjah, Deira, Abu Dhabi, Fujairah, Ajman and Hatta services will start at 06:00am and continue up to 00:00 (midnight) during the holidays," stated Mahboob.

Marine transport

He also indicated that the working hours of marine transit systems during Eid Al-Fitr holidays would be as follows: Water Bus from 07:00am up to 10:00pm, Water Taxi from 10:00am up to 10:00pm, and Ferry Dubai from 09:00am up to 09:00pm.

Driving schools

As for driving schools and centers, Mahboob announced that Emirates Driving Institute, Belhasa Driving Center, Dubai Driving Center, Galadari Driving Center, Al Ahli Driving Center, and Dubai International Driving Center would be off during the first and second days of Eid Al Fitr and would resume duty on the third day of the Eid.

All vehicles testing & registration centers will be out of service during the three days of Eid Al-Fitr and will resume duty on the 4th of Shawwal, he added.

Dubai Customs

Dubai Customs has announced the working hours at its customs centers and posts to enable continuity of clearance of goods for both individuals and companies, offering convenient times for clients.

"Dubai Customs is keen on providing consistent services particularly those associated with clearance of goods during Eid holidays, in line with its strategic vision and objectives with respect to providing value-added customs services and consistently supporting the economy and trade for meeting the broad needs of clients," said Ahmed Mahboob Musabah, Executive Director of Client Management Division at Dubai Customs.

The Customs Centres at Dubai Cargo Village, Hatta Customs Centre, Customs Declaration Management at Port Rashid, Coastal Berth Customs Center and Creek Entry Customs Center shall operate on a 24/7 basis throughout the official holiday.

Customs Posts at Dubai International Airport (Terminal 1, 2 '&' 3) will be operating round the clock during Eid to facilitate smooth process for in-coming passengers. A large number of visitors who wish to spend Eid holidays in the UAE are expected to arrive atDubai Airports over the coming days.

The working hours at Dubai International Airport Free Zone Inspection Centre will be from 7.30 am to 10pm throughout the Eid holidays.

The Multi-Commodities Customs Center will be working from 9:00 am until 9pm during the whole Eid period. Creek Customs Centre will be operating on 2nd and 3rd days of Eid from 8am to 1pm.

Port Rashid Customs center will resume work on 3rd day of Eid from 8am to 1.30pm. The working hours at Postal Customs Centre will be from 9am to 1pm on 2nd and 3rd days of Eid.

Hamriyah Port Customs center will be operating from 8am to 1pm.

Financial markets

The Eid Al Fitr holiday for the financial markets will start on Friday, August 17 (corresponding to 29 Ramadan) and will run until the third day of Shawwal (Hijri calendar), the Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA) has said.

SCA said that the transactions will be resumed on the fourth day of Shawwal.

Postal services

Only main post offices will be open from 9am to 1pm from August 17 to the third day of Eid on the occasion of Eid Al Fitr.

However, all post offices will remain closed on the first day of Eid.

The following post offices will be open from 9am to 1pm (except on the first day of Eid): Abu Dhabi Central Post Office and Hamdan Post Office in Abu Dhabi; Al Ain Central Post Office; Dubai Central Post Office and Al Khor Post Office; Sharjah Central Post Office and Al Ghuwair Post Office; Ajman Central Post Office; Umm Al Quwain Industrial Post Office; Ras Al Khaimah Central Post Office, Al Uraibi Post Office; Fujairah Central Post Office, Dibba A Fujairah Post Office and Khorfakkan Post Office.

Dewa timings during Eid

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority has announced the official timings for its customer service centers during the holiday period of Eid Al Fitr.

Dewa’s customer service centers will remain open with the following timings to help its customers. All services will be delivered to customers at head office in Za’beel East, the Burj Nahar Center, Al Wasl Center, and Discovery Gardens on Saturday, 30th of Ramadan, from 9 am to 1.30 pm, and on 3rd of Shawal from 8.30 am to 3 pm.

In case Saturday is the first day of Eid Al Fitr, all Dewa’s customer service centres will be closed on that day.

Dewa provides regular payment channels through its offices from 7:30 am to 8pm except Fridays, and also through petrol stations such as Enoc and Eppco, Emirates Post Offices, Etisalat and banks’ payment machines, mpay through the website, and through Dewa’s electronic portal.

Dubai Health Authority Eid timings

All primary healthcare centres will remain closed during the first day of Eid. They will be open from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm during the second and third day of the festival, the Dubai Health Authority announced today.

All primary healthcare centres will remain open from 9 am to 2 pm during the 30th day of the Holy month of Ramadan. Al Safa and Al Mamzar, will be the two centres open during the evenings on the 29th and 30th day of the Holy month of Ramadan. They will be open from 8:30 pm to 12:00 pm.

The DHA has wished Eid greetings to all.

Municipal Health Authority Eid timings

The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City announced that Customer Service Centers would resume receiving the public at the Head Office as usual from 07:00 am up to 05:00 pm, and at External Centers from 07:00 am to 03:00 pm after the end of Eid Al-Fitre holidays.

The move is aimed to serve customer needs and sustain the rising tempo of transaction processing to meet the expectations and serve the interests of our valued customers.

The Customer Service Centers have processed 22 thousand transactions during the holy month of Ramadan. A report compiled by the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City states more than 22 thousand transactions were processed including more than 11 thousand transactions related to the issuance of consumption materials supplied through the two Foodstuffs Distribution Centers at Abu Dhabi and Musaffah, whereas about 2,000 transactions were related to the health inspection operations supplementing customers transactions, and licensing of activities. More than 10 thousand transactions related to lands have also been processed.

The report stated that Customer Service Centers have upgraded the service offering process as it managed over the past three months to process more than 123 thousand different transactions; with May witnessing the process of more than 21 thousand transactions through Foodstuffs Distribution Centers, and transaction processing clocked more than 22 thousand in June and 23 thousand in July. In the field of following up health inspection operations relating to licensing of activities, more than 1,600 transactions have been processed in May, 1,500 transactions in June and 1,700 transactions in July in addition to several transactions and services rendered to customers during the same period.

It's official: Eid in UAE, Saudi Arabia on Sunday

It's official now. Muslims in the UAE and Saudi Arabia will celebrate Eid Al Fitr on Sunday as Shawal moon was not sighted on Friday evening, the moon sighting committees said.

A noted UAE astronomer had predicted last week that Eid Al Fitr will fall on Sunday 19th August.

Astronomy researcher and General Superviser of the Sharjah Planetarium Ibrahim Jarwan insisted that calculations showed that the crescent moon marking the beginning of the month of Shawwal will rise on Friday 17th August at 7.54pm. As the moonrise takes place 65 minutes after the sunset on that day, it will be impossible to see it because it will not be there on the horizon.

The ideal time to watch the crescent moon ranges between 10 to 30 minutes after the sunset on a day, explained Al Jarwan.

Thus Saturday will be the 30th day that completes the month of Ramadan, and the crescent will be visible on the horizon 17 minutes after the sunset, he added.

If Eid Al Fitr falls on Sunday, people in the UAE will enjoy a 5-day Eid holiday starting from Friday and ending on Tuesday. Work will, then, resume on Wednesday.

Authorities in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman have already declared 10-day Eid holidays.

Muslims in other Gulf Arab countries are still waiting for announcement from their respective moon sighting committees. Most of Arab countries celebrate Eid on the same day.

Eid in Pakistan

But Pakistani media reports said that Shawal moon has been sighted in Pakistani cities bordering Afghanistan and the Muslims there will celebrate Eid tomorrow.

Reports said that Muslims in Miran Shah and North Waziristan will celebrate Eid tomorrow after authorities declared Eid tomorrow in those areas.

Friday night moon sighting to decide Eid holiday

Dubai: UAE residents will be on edge Friday night to find out if the Eid holidays start on Saturday.

If the crescent moon is sighted anytime after sunset, Eid will start Saturday in line with the Islamic lunar calendar.

So, what’s different about the Islamic months and why does the moon play such a shining role in the lives of countless Muslims around the world?

The tradition of moon sighting has stood for 14 centuries since the birth of Islam.

In fact, the waxing and waning of the moon — the visible part of the moon made so by sunlight spreading across its surface — has been used since ancient times to keep track of time.

“This moon or lunar calendar’s been there forever, it predates Islam. Anyone can use it. You just look at the moon and know what day of the month it is,” said Hasan Al Hariri from the Dubai Astronomy Club.

“The moon has clear fixed phases — from the crescent moon, to half moon, to full moon and back to crescent — that makes it easy to follow. So, you know what day and month it is, but what about the year?

“[In the corresponding year 622 AD] it was fixed as ‘Year One’ of the Islamic calendar, also called Hijri to mark the emigration of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, from Makkah to Madinah.”

We are now in year 1433 in the Hijri or Islamic calendar, and today (Friday) could be the last day of Ramadan.

Each of the 12 lunar Muslim months is either 29 or 30 days, as the moon’s orbit around the earth is about 28.5 days, he explained. It takes about another 24 hours to be able to see with the naked eye — the faint crescent of the new moon traditionally marking the new month.

Since the month is at least 29 days then, people look for the crescent on the night of the 30th.

If it is seen — usually in the fading twilight after sunset — the current month ends with 29 days ‘hollow’ and the next month starts.

If it is not seen — or if it is too cloudy — the current month is regarded as ‘full’, that is 30 days. This framework means the Islamic year ends up being 354 or 355 days long, compared to the regular 365-day solar year.

This made moon sighting essential for religious ceremonies — and for legal reasons like quantifying the duration of contracts and loans — and so it was done for every month. However, these days — apart from Ramadan and the Eid following it immediately — the start and end of the months are mostly based on calendar dates set in advance in scientific timetables.

“You can know to the minute when the moon will rise or set on a particular day five years down the line, for example. The moon has a fixed predictable orbit and cycle, you just work out those times in advance based on current stations,” said Noor Al Haq from Dubai’s Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities.

“Traditionally, moon sighting has been done with the naked eye, without the use of special equipment. There‘s no dispute among the religious scholars and astronomers about it, they both are specialists in their own field. It’s only the common people who don’t fully understand the logic behind these two specialities that argue over moon sighting or calculations.”

Al Haq pointed out moon sighting has its own talent, depending on the observers’ location relative to the moon, their eyesight, the weather, the height of the observation point, knowledge of where and when to look for it in the sky, among other technicalities.

“People used to take to higher ground to get a clear view of the horizon, from places like hilltops in Ras Al Khaimah. Today, some people do this from Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest tower, in Dubai,” Al Haq said.

Dubai bus shelters to get internet connectivity

RTA's pilot project seeks to set up Wi-Fi hotspots in some facilities by year-end. Dubai:

In addition to the world’s first air-conditioned bus shelters, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will soon boast another first — Wi-Fi-enabled bus shelters.

A pilot project is being planned to have Wi-Fi connectivity at some of the 400 new AC bus shelters to come up at new locations by the end of this year.

“We are currently doing feasibility studies and working out the modalities of having Wi-Fi at new bus shelters. Several vendors have approached us with their ideas and we are looking at the best possible options,” said Mohammad Abdullah Al Ali, Director of Planning and Business Development at the RTA’s Public Transport Agency, in an exclusive interview with Gulf News.

Elaborating further on possible ways to access the internet at different locations he said that only people using public transport services would be able to access it.

Linked to Nol cards

“We are trying to work out the issue of accessibility, we don’t want unwanted people to come and crowd bus shelters just to access the internet. We are planning to link it to the Nol payment system and only those who are actually waiting for a bus will be able to use it after punching their Nol cards,” added Al Ali.

Initially, the project will be tried out at some of the most popular locations and a survey is being conducted to identify potential areas.

“AC bus shelters is the RTA’s pioneer project and Wi-Fi will add more value to it, I don’t think there are such services in bus shelters in any part of the world,” said Al Ali, highlighting some of the RTA’s landmark initiatives.

UAE property market begins slow recovery

Total value of land transactions in Dubai grew 21 per cent to Dh63 billion in the first half of the year. The UAE’s real estate market is showing signs of recovery – nearly four years after the sector faced the fallout of the worst economic crisis in September 2008 that nearly halted most of the development activities. Backed by a structured cash injection, careful re-engineering of major development companies and rescheduling of projects and debts, the sector is expected to rebound – although slowly, according to market experts.

“The overall residential market is seeing a positive trend with the villa market continuing to outperform the apartment sector in the second quarter of 2012,” real estate consultant, Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL), said in a recent report.

Signs of improved investor confidence have flowed into the real estate sector, with continued demand for quality, well located and income producing assets, it said.

“Prime residential buildings in well established locations continue to see improved performance, but secondary locations are still suffering from rental and pricing declines,” the report stated.

Except for RAK Properties, all the publicly listed property developers have recorded solid growth during the second quarter of this year. Emaar Properties recorded a 45 per cent jump in net profits to Dh1.2 billion at a time when its revenue remained flat, while Abu Dhabi’s biggest developer, Aldar Properties, recorded a 228 per cent jump in net profits in the second quarter of the year – visibly recovering from the near bankrupt situation when it had to be bailed out by the Abu Dhabi government last year.

Sorouh Real Estate, meanwhile, recorded Dh259 million profit – a 29 per cent increase over the same period a year earlier, while its revenue jumped 247 per cent to Dh1.2 billion.

“Dubai’s real estate recovery appears to have continued in Q2,” according to a report by Emirates NBD Research.

And prices for almost all categories of housing rose April through June according to data from Cluttons. “Mid-range villa prices rose 18.5 per cent year-on-year last month, outpacing the 14.6 per cent year-on-year rise in high-end villa prices. Apartment prices rose more modestly, while price declines in the beleaguered low-end apartment sector have slowed,” the data revealed.

Total value of land transactions in Dubai grew 21 per cent to Dh63 billion in the first half of 2012, according to the Dubai Land Department. The department’s statistics reveal that a total of 18,953 transactions were recorded in the first half of the year, consisting mostly of sales, mortgages, land development, lease contracts and grants.

Sultan Bin Mejrin, director-general of Dubai Land Department, said these are important indicators of growth and strong performance of the market.

“The real estate market in the UAE is quite fragmented with Dubai already seeing greater stability and even growth in some cases for certain sub-sectors of the market. This trend is expected to continue for the remainder of the year,” Matthew Green, Head of Research and Consultancy, CB Richard Ellis (CBRE), Middle East, told Gulf News.

Echoing similar thoughts is Niall McLoughlin, Senior Vice President of Damac Properties. “Confidence is coming back to the Dubai market and investors are looking to capitalise on some great offers. We are set to see an increase in valuations throughout the rest of the year and into 2013,” he said.

Deflationary pressures are likely to persist during the second half of 2012 as new supply continues to outpace growth in demand and heightened competition aggravates already falling rents, CB Richard Ellis said in its latest report.

“On the flip side those situation in less desirable locations will continue to face challenges in maintaining occupancy rates and in attracting new tenants. For Abu Dhabi the development cycle is significantly behind Dubai, with the capital only now reaching the peak of its development cycle,” said CBRE’s Green. “As new supply emerges we expect to see further deflation of sales and leasing rates, although this will be moderate as compared to the declines that we have seen during 2009 and 2010, at the peak of the market downturn.”

According to a recent report, Dubai remains in the top performing 15 cities in global real estate sector and number one in the Middle East throughout the second quarter with buoyant Asian markets and resurgence in the main European capitals providing a stimulus for growth.

Indians top list of foreign property buyers in Dubai

Buyers from India, Pakistan, UK account for majority of Dh22b invested in the property market.

Dubai: Foreign investors injected more than Dh22 billion in the real estate sector in Dubai, with Indian, Pakistani, and British buyers dominating the market, government data for the first half of 2012 showed.

Dubai’s Land Department, which issued its half-yearly report on Tuesday, says that the funds were used to buy 12,875 properties, including buildings, lands, apartments, and residential villas during the first half of 2012.

Indians purchased 2,153 properties at a value of Dh3.75 billion, followed by Pakistanis who bought 1,814 properties valued at Dh1.713 billion.

“The real estate sector performance is moving from strength to strength over the past two years. The market has been attracting more foreign investors, which reflects a solid national economy and its excellent growth potential,” Majida Ali Rashid, chairwoman of the Real Estate Investment Promotion and Management Centre, said.

She added that the increased investor confidence in Dubai properties and the growth in deals, both in terms of quality and quantity, are positive indicators for further growth.

Mohannad Al Wadiya, managing director of Harbor Real Estate, said that the real estate market in Dubai has shown high levels of flexibility in meeting investor requirements and trends during the first half of 2012, specially the new investors looking to benefit from the market’s price correction in the past two years.

“Moreover, these results should be considered a wake-up call for developers to finish their projects — and would encourage investors to get back into the market by creating a positive vibe,” he said.

This will also ensure openness and transparency in the market going forward, he added.

Majida said that foreign investors’ purchases in freehold projects in Dubai are still dominated by Indians who have consistently claimed the first spot since foreign ownership regulations were implemented.

She added that British investors bought a total of 1,564 properties worth Dh2,529 billion, ranking third in terms of the number of units purchased, while Russian and Iranian investors competed for the fourth and fifth spots, with Iranians buying 1,057 properties worth Dh1,515 billion while Russians purchased 694 properties at a total value of Dh1,438 billion.

According to the report, Saudi investors came in sixth after buying 416 units in the first half of the year at a value of Dh1,059 billion, followed by Americans with 415 properties valued at Dh694 million. Canadians came in eighth as they bought 329 properties worth Dh754 million.

Emiratis top the list

Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) investors pumped in Dh12 billion in Dubai’s real estate sector, and Emiratis topped the list in the apartment segment.

Sultan Al Akraf, senior director of the real estate registration services at the department, said that the figures reflect an ongoing upside trend and a positive growth in the real estate market performance in the emirate.

Al Akraf added that the total value of real estate transactions has exceeded Dh63 billion during the first half of the current year, representing a 21 per cent growth over the same period in 2011.

According to the department’s figures, the biggest investment was in plots through sales accounting for 14,652 transactions worth Dh30.8 billion.

A visitor needs to get a new entry permit to re-enter the country once he or she leaves the country for any destination. The new entry permit will be issued only after one month from the date the visitor leaves the UAE

Dubai: Visas for visit, transit and tourism are valid only for a single entry into the UAE, said a senior official at the Ministry of Interior, adding that visitors cannot return using the same permit even after a trip to a neighbouring country.

Major General Mohammad Ahmad Al Merri, Director-General of the Dubai General Department for Residency and Foreigners Affairs, told Gulf News: "A visitor needs to get a new entry permit to re-enter the country once he or she leaves the country for any destination. The new entry permit will be issued only after one month from the date the visitor leaves the UAE."

Major General Al Merri was responding to a question about visitors who face difficulties in returning to the UAE after a short sightseeing trip to Oman or after leaving in a hurry for a meeting in Bahrain. They cannot re-enter the UAE immediately since a new visa will be issued only after a gap of at least one month.

The rule applies even if the visitors leave the country before the expiry of their entry permits, he said. "They have to wait for one month before applying for another entry permit."

Major General Al Merri said this happens to some people who arrive on tourist or visit visas to see family or friends or visit the country as tourists.

"They stay here for few days and then decide to go to Oman, Bahrain or any nearby country. These people believe they can return to the UAE using the same entry permit as they stayed here only for a few days.

"They think the entry permit is still valid since they did not use it till the expiry date," he said.

Major General Al Merri said the department, however, could take into consideration any exceptional circumstances pertaining to a particular visitor. But such a decision is taken on case-by-case basis.

"We want to make it easy and enjoyable for people who want to visit our country. But they should adhere to the rules," he said.

Multiple entry

Multiple entry visas are an option for businessmen who are frequent visitors to the UAE and who have a relationship with a reputable company here.

This visa is valid for six months from the date of issue and costs Dh1,000. However, each visit must not exceed 30 days.

Visit, tourist and transit visas are only for single entry.

Dejan immediately exclaimed, “Mazda RX-7!” knowing full well it would be near impossible to source the rotary sportscar, and thus immediately winning the coveted ‘ridiculous and completely unfeasible’ argument award. Nobody could top that, until Sony professed that his favourite would simply have to be a two-stroke Saab twin-cylinder. Imran struggled and flexed his thinking muscle for a while, before deciding that his all-time dream engine is undoubtedly a Duesenberg straight eight.

Then editor Amit laid down the law, and we were all ordered to stick to the latest models, and pick our very favourite four, six, eight, 10, and 12-cylinder engines. It turned out to be a remarkably unanimous decision.

Sony will be representing the four-cylinder engine, choosing the new Toyota 86 sportscar, although really, we’re commending Subaru here. There could only ever be one manufacturer vouching for the six-pots, and that’s Porsche with the new 3.4-litre in the Boxster S left to Dejan, who also drew the lucky straw when it came to our eight-cylinder choice, the 4.5-litre V8 in the Ferrari Italia.

Imran likes them big, predictably, so bagged a 10-cylinder Audi R8, and Amit clutched the keys to the 12-cylinder Lamborghini Aventador firmly to his chest. The only thing left to do was beg our office manager for petrol money, and go wake up every inhabitant within a 20km radius of the sleepy mountain town of Huwaylat. The twisty road — precisely 10km long — carved into the Hajar mountain rock between the Sharjah-Kalba highway and Hatta would be our playground for the day, and since nobody died (only some roadside goats were left with permanent ear damage), we consider this feature a resounding success.

Toyota 86 – four cylinder

Evidently, I start off with a clear disadvantage here. With the top contender in the shootout armed with three times more cylinders than my lowly four-pot Toyota 86, it might seem a foregone conclusion that my Japanese ride will be shredded to smithereens seconds into the fight. Not only is the Toyota’s FA20 2.0-litre boxer four ‘cylindrically’ challenged, it’s also the least powerful of the lot managing just 200bhp and 205Nm. But fortunately, this is much more that a cruelly lopsided fight of horsepower and torque.

And when it comes to pure, unadulterated fun behind the wheel, the 86 proves itself a David who can take the fight right up to the European Goliaths. The free-spinning unit that peaks at 7,000rpm begs to be flogged and will make you work hard for your dollop of fun. To get the max out of the 86 calls for a lot of involvement from the person behind its beautifully weighted steering wheel.

Although the car willingly hangs its tail out at every corner, it takes more than just turning in and stomping on the pedal to sustain that drift for longer periods due to the lack of horses. Choosing the right gear, giving the right amount of input are all vital, and add to the pure old-school sportscar experience. On the open stretches of Maleha Road on the way to Huwaylat, the boxer proved that its meagre output is more than enough for the 1,180kg sportscar.

The linear power build-up and the progressively gruff note of the engine as the revs rise towards the red, do not betray any signs of deficiency compared to the better endowed competition. And once we got off the straight roads into the mountainous twisties, the 86, with its supremely well-balanced chassis and its extremely low centre of gravity, proved more manageable at the job than the rest save probably the new Porsche Boxster S.

In fact, even the Hatta mountain roads seemed too wide for the Toyota’s perfectly composed dynamics. High end torque is quite impressive, as I found out when the 86 despatched steep passes without a huff or a puff even in fourth gear. It’s not a match to the sinister styling of the Aventador, or the appealing lines of the R8. It might not have the emotional pull of a Ferrari Italia or the sophistication of the Boxster S, but the 86, with its four-cylinder boxer, gives infinitely more fun for your money than the rest.

Porsche Boxster S – Six cylinder

The choice was bewildering here. Audi’s recent supercharged 3.0-litre V6 just might stand above even BMW’s sublime straight-six turbo, but then how can we overlook Nissan GT-R’s evolving 3.8-litre V6, that generates more and more power thanks to precise blueprinting and ever-closer tolerances with seemingly every passing model year?

But there’s to be no crescendo here, no drumroll, and no surprises. You’ve seen the pictures, and you already know that in the end the Porsche Boxster S made the cut, with its 3.4-litre flat-six mounted in the middle. Why is this our favourite six-cylinder on the planet right now? Because it makes this car.

The Toyota 86 apparently has a lower centre of gravity than a Boxster, so boasts the press material, but you’d be lying if you said you could totally tell. You can’t: the Porsche is more composed, runs much flatter, reacts quicker, and pivots into a corner off a spot directly beneath the driver’s butt.

All along, the flat-six delivers an uninterrupted supply of horses up to almost 8,000rpm, every single one of the Stuttgart steeds entirely manageable. – 315bhp isn’t a whole lot to be honest, but in the Boxster S the loving relationship between engine and chassis combine for that rare ten-tenths driving experience, where the average enthusiast driver can extract every last drop of performance from his tool.

Porsche’s 3.4-litre engine now breathes through a new flow-optimised air intake system, which draws its precious oxygen from both flanks of the car instead of just one like before. The Boxster S additionally features a controllable resonance flap to free up more torque at lower revs, and engineers also worked hard to get a more resourceful combustion while still managing to keep stress loads and internal frictions lower.

This is a sportscar, and you can expect it to be fast, but forward thrust isn’t electric, especially after climbing out of an Italia or a Lambo. What sticks out is the flat-six’s eagerness to maintain pace high up in the rev band, using its elastic torque characteristics to get you out of botched corners, and instant response for mid-turn corrections. With the lively 3.4-litre flat-six in the Boxster S, remember, the steering wheel is just as effective as the throttle. Zuffenhausen’s engineers even managed to ensure we see a 10.0 litres-per-100km weekend average from this 315 horses roadster. Call them free range horses if you like.

Ferrari 458 Italia – Eight cylinder

When I first strapped myself into the Italia two years ago and headed for the hills, I was touched in places I didn’t know existed. There is a sort of lobe dangling somewhere behind the top of your jawbone, deep inside your ear. When you open the throttle of a Ferrari 4.5-litre V8 and brace yourself all the way to 9,000rpm, this little lobe starts gyrating furiously, feeding masochistically on the engine’s aural onslaught and giving the brain strict orders to expel immense amounts of dopamine. I’ve never felt that dangling lobe before, the one that clenches your jaw shut, glues your eye lids open, and electrifies your spine into a neurosurgeon-approved posture.

Or maybe it’s just the 458 getting to me again? On the one hand I’m convinced the flat-plane crank V8 sitting behind me in the Italia, counts on as much processing power as NASA’S Curiosity rover. On the other hand, the engine’s behaviour is so primeval, sadistic, and barbaric with its sounds, its smells, its furious attacking cavalry some 570 strong, that you find it hard to believe the black magic of electronics could possibly be involved. Specific displacement is 4499cc in this V8, which with its direct injection and compression ratio of 12.5:1, coupled to that free-spinning flat-plane crankshaft, develops 570bhp at 9,000rpm for 127bhp per litre.

The sound splitting the atmosphere out of those three exhaust pipes is loud, but you also know you’re hearing the engine itself; the punching cylinders and violent explosions, the rushing oxygen and workaholic valves. Ferrari’s 90-degree V8 is easily our favourite on the market right now, for reasons that go way beyond its captivating performance.

It’s our favourite because it makes you appreciate every second of life, every fraction of throttle pedal travel. As the manic needle keeps blurring up the tachometer, leaping between five and nine thousand revs, the Ferrari 458 Italia gives you hope for the world. New emissions laws don’t mean that the supercar is a dying breed. It just means that only the strongest will survive. Long live the 458.

Audi R8 5.2 – 10 cylinder

I’ll let you in on a little secret. I’m scared stiff of this R8 V10. Why? Because we have a little history, the Audi and I. Amit had the car for a review a while back and I was begging for the key. I got my way and took the beast out for a spin... And nearly saw the pearly gates. I almost suffered a cardiac arrest when I foolishly buried the throttle. The 5.2-litre 10 cylinder motor leapt into full, unadulterated fury, obliterating the 100kph mark before I had blinked twice. It left me a quivering wreck.

I used to think there was no better sound than a lazy American V8 but the soundtrack of this German beast gave my ears multiple you know whats. As pleasurable as that was, I was so taken aback by the brute force of the R8 that I promised I’d never sit in one again until I was mature enough to treat it with a little more respect. Probably when I was 50 and having a mid-life crisis. But, at the tender age of, err 33, I was again handed the key of this raging monster. It’s got the look of a psychotic killer.

That evil smirk is highlighted by piercing LEDs. That sideblade, extended sill and huge diffuser just add to the drama, as if it needed any more of that. I’d go as far as saying that it didn’t even need two extra cylinders and around 100bhp more than the original 4.2-litre V8. That one was crazy enough but this V10 is borderline insane. 0-100kph in 3.9seconds, 525bhp, 530Nm of torque and a redline set at a glorious 8,700rpm makes for one heck of a car.

It was so good that I insisted on driving it to the mountains and back. No way was this one for sharing. I didn’t even get out of the plush cabin, complete with a suede flat bottom steering, when nature called. Because when you have a R8 V10 for the day, nature takes a back seat. Which the Audi doesn’t have, but still. You sit low to the ground in here and this makes 100kph feel like 200kph. But I was never going to push this thing to its top speed of 317kph. I’d been bitten once by this thing before… The only thing I didn’t take a shine to was the R tronic six-speed gearbox.

Those cogs shift with a jerk and leave your head bobbing back and forth but that’s the only criticism I’ll accept of the R8. The rest of it, including the magnetic ride dampers (there’s not an iota of roll) ceramic brakes (it stops as hard as it goes) and the Quattro all-wheel drive (it’ll get you out of trouble all the time) is simply sublime. And that’s before you engage sport mode. Each gear change is denoted by a ferocious roar from the quad tips and that sound itself is reason why I’d take this V10 over any other out there. That includes the Gallardo, which has more juice in its motor and which it kindly donated, albeit detuned, to the R8. But, I don’t think my heart can take it…

Lamborghini Aventador – 12 cylinder

As I blitz the throttle past the first bend of the many on our test route in the Hajar mountains, the crushing 50-degree heat is permeating through the Aventador’s cabin, aggravating the sweaty palm syndrome usually associated with driving a big Lambo quickly. Unsurprisingly, the AC isn’t up to scratch, but the massive 6.5-litre V12 seems to be working just fine. As the revs rise, the engine note becomes louder exponentially, and as you near the 8,500rpm redline, you get a sense the gateway to the underworld has flung open unleashing a pack of blood-thirsty Cereberus which are now snapping at your heels.

This is how a supercar’s V12 should sound. However, amidst all this aural indulgence it’s easy to forget that by the time you’re out of second gear, you are already doing in excess of 120kph, and unless you don’t mind ending roof-first in a ravine, it’s not the brightest idea on roads where tyres start howling in protest and letting go at anything over 80kph. Of all the cars congregated here, the Aventador is decidedly the most intimidating to drive on this narrow mountain pass riddled with severe hairpins and sphincter-tightening blind corners.

Add to this the ISR gearbox that delivers a Chuck Norris-tribute kick to your lower spine in Corsa mode, and actually unsettles the back of the car, and you’ve got a pure white-knuckled terror machine in your hands.The Aventador develops 700bhp and hits 0-100kph in 2.9 seconds, easily making it the fastest and the most powerful car in this company.

I’ve driven the V8-engined 458 Italia; it’s magical and on these spaghetti roads, I’m convinced that it will match the Lambo move for move. However, there is something otherworldly and sinister about the Aventador; it’s a sensational machine that makes most supercars look like McDonald’s happy meal toys in comparison. Our favourite V12 car? Without a shadow of doubt.
