The {Wooden Horse} that wasn't meant to be...

I have this "thing" for horses.

Mainly, I'm drawn to the antique toy variety.

Even though, I do love to watch horses run!

(otherwise known as the horse races)

My grandfather spent alot of his extra time piddling with horses.

And oh, how he wanted his grandchildren to love horses too.

I did love them....from afar!

I was deathly afraid of those big animals, especially if I was riding one.

There are fond memories spending time flipping

through Quarter Horse magazines with my grandpa.

We would often watch horse races on TV together, especially Derby Day.

My grandfather named some of his racehorses

after each one of his grand kids.

Janis Jet stepped on a nail, and never got to run a race...pooh!

But we did make trips to Ruidoso to see Johnny Jet, a horse named after my brother. Johnny never quite made it to the winner's circle.

Maybe horse loving is in my genes,

or maybe their majestic design makes me pause...

but whatever the reason, I like horses!

My very first "antique" purchase was this horse tricycle.

I lived in St. Louis at the time, and was scouring Cherokee Street for a Dining table...and came home with this toy horse instead!

This wooly German pull toy horse I found antiquing in Warrenton.

The lady must've had several, because I kept seeing them in other people's stashes. I bought the last one she had!

This Czech wooden rocking horse was purchased several years ago.
(Also picked up at the Round Top antique show)

I love the lightly distressed white paint, leather ears and reins.

While antiquing last week, I spotted a very nice wooden horse from afar.

This wooden horse was obviously an antique,

with beautifully peeled white paint, leather ears, and the sweetest eyes.

It was a smaller version, so probably once a little pull toy.

As I got closer, my heart was palpitating...

I was trying to see the price tag, but at the same time,

not look too interested.

You know the game. I was planning on haggling a bit, so I couldn't let the owner know I was ecstatic about this tabletop horse!

Ah...I see a 1 and a 5 and a 5.

Hot diggity dog, I'm thinking...this horse is gonna look so great in my

living room. I'm mentally placing it in lots of different spots in my home.

I look away, quickly assess, and plan my strategy.

OK, I'm gonna offer 125...and see what she says.

As I ease my way closer to where the vendor is seated,

I take another look at "my horse".

What? Am I seeing things right?

Is that a "zero"??? Oh surely not...it's smaller than the 5's and the 1.

But, no...it's definitely a zero...after the 5!

Oh, the horrified look that must've taken over my face

at that very moment!

So, I slowly started walking...away

far, far away from "my horsey"...

it just wasn't meant to be.

So I will enjoy the lovely horses that I have!

My old rocking horse has a new home for now.

I think she looks great here in the living room!

DIY,...easy projects that require hammer, nails, maybe a saw or drill, but no chainsaws,

Decorating,...have a good eye for beautiful stuff, copy good design, like to rearrange, etc.
yep, I can do that!

{Marburger Farms} Antique Show in a Day

Does seeing white tents lining both sides of the road

make your heart go pitter patter?

If you are familiar with "antiquing",

then you know that those tents just may have something wonderful

that you've been looking for to add to your decor.

Yesterday, I ventured a 2+ hour drive to see the

Marburger Farms Antique Show.

This show is situated between Warrenton and Round Top.

I enjoy it because it's easily accessible, it's self-contained, and the vendors are top-notch with lots of variety...

and you can do it in a day!

I thought I'd take you on a little tour of some of my favorite booths

and their unique wares.

My eyes were first drawn to this display outside

of pieces forged with iron and wood.

This vendor also brings antiques from France that she shops for at flea markets there. Her husband does the iron work pieces. What a great team!

The layout at Marburger is easy to figure out (even for a directionally challenged person like myself) and the tents are marked clearly.

{Mantle vignette} for Spring

I am one who likes to change things up...

so when I began decorating for Easter, I decided to move my big clock

and put this lovely picture of a shepherd and a lamb in its place.

When I hung the picture, the scale wasn't quite right.

The picture was a little too small for the space.

Empty frame to the rescue.

I hung it on the center nail (where my clock hung),

and set the picture off center, leaning against the frame.

A few of my grandmother's encyclopedias are stacked on the left,

with a candleholder for height.

The sweet bird's nest completes the left side.

I try to stay away from symmetrical designs.

Mainly because it's too confining and it's hard to know where to stop.

Playing with differing heights and balance tends to work best for me.

On the right, I propped this large cross up against

the back and inside corner.

More books are placed on the right, with the apothecary jar filled with

speckled eggs and a satin bow, set on top.

The finishing touch is the He is Risen banner I made last year.

6 Easter decor ideas

Celebrating Easter has always been important for me and my family!

When the kids were little, I wanted to instill in them the true meaning

of Easter, and not get lost in bunnies and eggs.

I thought I'd compile the posts from last year

that I did to celebrate Easter at our house.

First, the tablescape I created using sheet music placemats.

Fortunately, there are so many resources that assist parents in explaining the message of Christ's sacrifice to children of all ages.

truly can prepare the heart for the Easter season.

I am a bunny lover, so in my kitchen I put chocolate bunnies in jars for a

tasty display that did, and will again this year, get eaten!

Only twice a year do the lush farm fields between Austin and Houston transform into fields of tents as far as the eye can see.

(First weekends of October and April...but opens 2 weeks prior)

I have been a faithful visitor for almost 15 years.

The town of Warrenton is a few miles outside Round Top,

and where you will find me rummaging
through the fields looking for the best bargains!

My tip is to go early, when vendors begin setting up.

The good stuff goes quickly!

I bought this Chop Suey sign

as it was being unloaded off the dealer's truck!

Joe is one of my favorite vendors who travels from St. Louis.

He salvages cool architectural items from buildings

before they are demolished.

He gave me a great price and could've sold it many times over throughout the day for triple what I paid.

The crafts editor and product designer at Martha Stewart Living
roamed the vast fields and tells you what's collecting currently,
as well as 14 reasons to love Round Top.

{Moss Cross} DIY Spring Vignette

When I think of Spring, I think green!

Since I don't have much of a green thumb,

moss is my friend!

Here's a simple project to get you ready for Spring and Easter

that adds a pop of green.

Supplies needed:

Styrofoam- 1 rectangle, 3 squares
3 bags of sheet moss
glue gun

(In the photo, there's a bottle of styrofoam glue...I tried it and it did not work for me)

Use your glue gun to adhere the styro pieces together to form your cross, like I laid out here in the pic. Then begin placing the sheet moss on the top and sides until no white styrofoam is showing through.

Glue the sheet moss on with your glue gun, and watch those fingers!

When the cross is covered, you can lean it against a wall in a display, or attach a ribbon and hang it on your front door for Easter.

I have a section of broken wrought iron fencing...hung apart on studs due to their weight...with scripture on vellum secured between. You can read more about it here.

I adore bunnies and nests for spring decor. I set these cement distressed bunnies near the books and the nest under a glass dome. You can find more spring/easter decor ideas here and here.

{Vellum Insert} Candle Apothecary and Vignette

The Oscar nominations are out...

can you guess which movie is on my favorite list?

If you are a Les Miserables fan like me,

then I'm sure you are familiar with this quote...

"To love another person is to see the face of God" by Victor Hugo

Oh yes, it's powerful!

And if you've seen the movie,

I'm sure you might just now be getting a little emotional

just thinking about it!

So I decided to incorporate it into my winter decor.

I sort of have a "theme" going.

Books, words, pages, etc.

After completing the mantle, I moved to the entryway table.

Here I displayed an open book of Famous Poems.

The old set of dominoes kept with the neutral color scheme, so I placed them in a tarnished silver footed bowl.

Height was needed, so my trusty apothecary candle jar

came to mind.

I typed up the quote using Jellyka Delicious Cake font and printed it on translucent vellum. (I have a jet printer, so I let it sit to dry for awhile)

When I placed the vellum in the jar, there was all this space above...

and I wasn't quite satisfied.

I also cut blank vellum and taped it to the back so that the entire cylinder was covered. An 8 1/2 X 11 didn't fit all the way around my cylinder.

Sheet music to the rescue! I added equal strips to the top and bottom to cover the open space completely.

Book pages would work well too!

Here it is all aglow!

{Stacked Books} Winter Mantle Design

It's drab and dreary here today...

been raining nonstop!

Makes me want to crawl in bed with a good book and read all day!

Hmmm...I think I have an idea!

I was staring at my totally blank mantle, and began gathering old books from around the house.

(yes, I have them scattered all around the house in different places.)

My inspiration was this totally cool Christmas tree made of stacked books with colored lights strung throughout.

I flipped the book bindings to the back, so the pages would show instead.

The antiquing of the pages vary due to the age of each book,

which adds to the interest I think.

Now just to find some items to place on top.

The black cross is unique, and to add to the "word" or "book" theme, the Jesus Loves Me plaque works great!

I placed the cute angel alongside.

It's a little like treasure hunting in your own house...

I take something from this room, or that,

and let it live in a different place for awhile.

On the right side of the mantle, I topped the book stacks

with these rustic crowns.

This old schoolbook has some interesting pictures and pages,

so I propped it open so you could get a little peek!

Old books are such treasures!

The "book" theme for this mantle will last me through February.

I added the heart/bookpage banner for some fun

as we look ahead to Valentine's day!

The Stockings are hung...{Burlap velvet stockings}

The stockings are finally hung,

and the Christmas mantle is done!

I chose burlap (I ordered a finer weave and it's less smelly)

and ivory velvet as my fabrics of choice.

Burlap is all the rage, you know. I may be late to the party,

but I'm here with my own version.

I wanted a basic shape with a contrasting cuff,

and then personalized each one with different adornments.

These faux wooden buttons looked manly enough for the hubster.

A box of vintage lace revealed these little beauties for my stocking.

That same vintage lace box had this sweet little lace collar for my daughter's stocking, and it fit the cuff perfectly!

Sometimes, the odds are in your favor.

Thank heavens they were in my favor today!

I went rummaging in my son's room to find something
interesting for his stocking.
Oh yes, his jar of vintage keys was just the thing!

They even jingle!!

I thought about glitter initials for each stocking,

but found these mirror ones...

and they were easy!

Can You Hear the Christmas Bells Ringing?

My kids aged 4 & 5 playing "dress-up". I hung a backdrop and started taking pictures.
This was taken 11 years ago.

There is an old Christmas hymn

titled "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day".

This carol is based on a poem "Christmas Bells" by

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, written in 1864.

The Civil War was raging and Longfellow had

recently lost his wife in a tragic fire.

His son had also been severely injured in the war.

He was heartbroken and suffering...

In 1872, John Calkin rearranged some of Longfellow's words.

He removed the references to the war and penned this version

that we have become familiar with today.

"I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day"

I heard the bells on Christmas day
Their old familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet the words repeat
Of peace on earth, good will to men.

I thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along the unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.

And in despair I bowed my head
'There is no peace on earth,' I said,
'For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.'

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
'God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail
With peace on earth, good will to men.'

Till ringing, singing on its way
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime, a chant sublime

(I "bolded" the portion of the lyrics for emphasis.)

We don't reside in Eden...the world we live in is NOT

what God intended for us.

But there is good news...

God sent us His Son, so that we may have HOPE!,

and PEACE with Him!

"For it pleased the Father that in [Jesus] should all fulness dwell; and, having made peace through the Blood of His Cross, by Him to reconcile all things unto Himself"

(Colossians 1:19-20).

{Mercury Glass} Christmas Hurricane

How do you decorate your coffee table?

I've been de-reddening my Christmas decor downstairs, so I needed a new something for the center of the living room.

I turned a plain glass hurricane candle holder into a

mercury glass masterpiece last year.
Well, not quite a masterpiece, but it looks pretty good!

There are lots of tutorials on how to transform
a glass container into a mercury glass lookalike.
Krylon makes a Looking Glass spray paint that makes it very easy.

I pulled out my Hurricane candle holder to take a look...

and decided it would work well with the

"new color scheme" of winter white, ivory, silver, antique silver,
bronze, and glitter everything!

Now to decorate around it!

I started with a silver charger, then added fresh greenery around.

I pulled apart a decorative floral pick and just used the bronze glittery branches, and the silver berries. I tucked them in the greenery.

Those 3 large, rusty jingle bells came from Hobby Lobby.

You know I love sheet music!

I put some through our shredder, then scrunched them up a bit, and put a clump in the middle.

I made room in the center for the hurricane candle holder to sit level.

Don't forget the candle....

All done!

Here's another closeup view. I generally always take apart those decorative floral picks, so you can spread the sparkle around!

There's my coffee table decorated for Christmas.

The other end of the table sits 2 large books with
a large stone cross resting on top.

Using simple items that you already have...layering them,

makes a quick and easy centerpiece!

Vintage Tablescape {Christmas Card Placemats}

Do you save your Christmas cards year after year?

I have been saving mine for 20+ years. There is a big sack of them in my craft closet, so I decided to do something with them this year.

Our family breakfast table was the perfect spot for my idea.

I traced a round placemat that I already had onto poster board.

I sorted through the bag of cards, and picked some favorites. I just used the front of the card and began placing them over the posterboard circle.

When I was pleased with the configuration, I stuck them in place with tape runner or any adhesive would work. I secured some of the edges with decorative tape (the one I used is a music score).

To make them waterproof, I sprayed them with a matte sealer.

Once dry, I started putting the tablescape together. Using fresh greenery for a base, the Santa on the Rocking Horse gets center stage.

Isn't he the cutest thing? This was the first Christmas decoration my husband and I purchased for our home as newlyweds.

I still love him...

I used wire chargers, so you can see the Christmas cards through them.

My mother started our collection of Spode Christmas Tree pottery, and added to it each Christmas until we owned every piece they make!

I hung 6 vintage ornaments that belonged to my Grandmother on the chandelier. It's also draped with fresh greenery

and some ribbon to keep it secure.

Here, I used red holly plates from Target (years ago). The goblets are a subtle green glass from Mexico. They also work well for cocktails!

I tucked a colorful candy cane and a sprig of greenery

under each napkin ring.

Option 2...I tried a soft green plate instead of the red, and put the smaller bread plate on top.

It's fun to play with options.

These plates are Chris Madden collection from JCPenney.

My family uses them daily along with our Scripture plates.

Each placemat is different and unique. I tried to put variety in each one.

The colors add a whimsy and I think it's fun for the Breakfast table!

For those of you with young ones, here's a fun activity.

Have them put the cards into groups.

Santa...angels...baby Jesus...Christmas trees, etc.

Depending on their age, you may have to help them get started.

My kids loved this game, and we played with Christmas cards all month!

I was a Kindergarten teacher in my previous life.

These are a few I came across that are so beautiful, I had to share.

I think I'll frame them and set them around the house.

My aunt does this with some of her cards,

and I actually thought they were prints!

There are so many ways you can recycle your Christmas cards.

5 {Christmas Mantle} DIY projects

My work was cut out for me when I decided to change
my Christmas color scheme this year!
The front door and porch were the first to be done.

Now, on to the Christmas Mantle and the how-to's!

The projects included are:
1. Chalkboard sign
2. Icy branches
3. Mirror garland
4. Frosty glittered sheet music candles
5. Ribbon/Burlap candleholders

The chalkboard I have had for many many years.
They are easy to make and there are many ways to make them.
I bought this empty frame at Hobby Lobby, then cut MDF board to fit it.
I then spray painted the board with "chalkboard" paint.
It took several coats! Pop the board into the frame.

I've seen many lovely wooden signs. You can find the one that sparked my inspiration by clicking here. The blog is Not My Own, which is from one of my all time favorite verses, so check it out!

In the interest of time, I knew using my chalkboard would be a quick and easy way to get the words I wanted up on the mantle.

I played around with some fonts,
and just eyeballed the writing with some chalk!
It's not perfect, but it'll do for this year!!

Project #2... the "icy" branches on the garland.
I saw these beautiful "iced" branches from Make Them Wonder blog.

You can find the instructions here.

This "iced" technique can be used on just about anything.
It's a little messy, so I worked outside.

First you need some Tacky Glue and I used a clear gel, but the regular white would work too. The Colorfill vase filler, I found at Hobby Lobby.

Squirt glue on the branches and sprinkle the vase filler on top. I also shook a little glitter on top as well, for extra sparkle.
I figured I was making a mess already, so why not?

So watch out wreaths, ornaments, garlands, silk flowers, pine cones, etc.

I just might go "ICY" crazy on you!

Project #3...mirror garland.
This is quick and easy. All you need is some jute string, hot glue gun and a package of small round mirrors per strand. I made 3 strands for my 10' garland. I found the mirrors at Michael's.
This idea was inspired by the blog Sweet suite 10 where she made ornaments with these small round mirrors.

Project #4...frosty, glittered sheet music candles.
I've mod podged sheet music onto candles before,
(you can find that tutorial by clicking here. )
While the mod podge is still wet, I made a mixture of Epsom salts and glitter. I mixed it together on some wax paper, then rolled the candle in it until the area was covered and sparkly. I set them upright to dry.

Project #5...Ribbon/Burlap Candleholders.
Basically, go to your pantry and find different sized cans. Wrap them with ribbon and secure with hot glue. Then cover with burlap ribbon. On some, the ribbon was too tall, so I folded the extra down to make a cuff.
(You can see the cuffed burlap on one candleholder in the second photo)

No need to go out and buy more candlesticks!
Shhhh, I don't think anyone will know!

Glittery Iced {Christmas Mantle}

"O come let us adore HIM

CHRIST the Lord"...

This hymn is one of my favorite Christmas hymns, so when I saw it used

on one of the many different wooden or pallet signs,

my head began to swirl!

Making a wooden or pallet sign would be time consuming, so my trusty

chalkboard became the most obvious option.

I searched fonts, and came up with a doable free hand design.

Next came the candles...

Sheet music is stashed all over at my house, so I grabbed some

and every ivory candle I could find.

With a little mod podge, epsom salts and glitter,...I made some wintery glittering candles for the mantle. I gathered candlesticks, and made some makeshift ones using items from the pantry.

I like to incorporate a cross in my Christmas decorating as well,

to remind us that there is more to this story!

Here, I placed a gold cross in a glass apothecary jar,

resting in some fake snow (soap flakes).

The garland is "iced" with vase filler...tutorial coming in the next post!

I added a mirror garland for added sparkle and reflection.

Silvery pine cones are scattered amongst the greenery,

and assorted ornaments are dangling from the branches.

The Christmas mantle is all aglow,...

But what's missing? Did you notice?...

the stocking hangers are empty,... but not for long!

Christmas Porch {Garland}

It's December,

and the white lights are aglow!

The countdown is on as we prepare our hearts to celebrate

the birth of the Light of the World!

This year I decided to replace the red,

and use more white, ivory, and antique silver.

The square wreaths were my first completed project.

I added some bare branches that I spray painted silver to my porch ceiling ...you can read more about the porch lighting installation by clicking here.

Using a sheer organza ribbon, I hung 8 different sparkly ornaments at varying lengths from the branches overhead.

The garland I had used for many years around the front doors needed to be "de-reddened" to match the new wreaths...

I know that's not a word, but you get my drift!

I really didn't want to go out and replace all the reddish ornaments.

With a can of silver metallic spray paint and glitter,

I went to town transforming old ornaments to fit my new color scheme!

I used Rustoelum Metallic Silver and Krylon Looking Glass spray paints.

One trick I found...

I wanted some of the silver ornaments to look more antique rather than shiny bright silver. After the silver paint was dry, I sprayed them with Minwax spray stain and that "antiqued" them just right!

One more TIP:

I had 3 decorative picks left over from my wreath project.

I took them apart and then ended up with 5 smaller pieces per pick,

to insert throughout the garland!

Hang all your pretty sparkly ornaments in your garland

and the front door is finished!

The urns that flank the front porch needed some Christmas lights too!

I found these 3' prelit trees at WalMart. They fit right on top of the urns,

but the tree stand was too wide to bury, so I wrapped the base

with burlap ribbon...wah lah...problem solved!!!

I have to give special thanks to the "hubster" for standing on the ladder

and following ALL of my directions!

It's a group effort for sure!!!

Winter White {Christmas Wreaths}

I am going for a white Christmas this year!

Translation....

I need to redo most of my Christmas decorations!

I'm ready for a change, so we'll see how much stuff I can make between now and Christmas Eve!

The square grapevine wreaths caught my eye,

and I couldn't leave the store without them.

(I found them in a cute boutique that also carries floral items,

but florist shops my have them too.)

This design would also work just as well with an
oval grapevine wreath.

Here's the "how to"...

I already had 2 bunches of frosted greenery and the ivory velvet ribbon.

I went to Hobby Lobby to get the rest, which has all

Christmas stuff 50% off, so hurry!!!

This is the other stuff you'll need, per wreath...

2 glittery floral picks

5 assorted ornament balls

1 bunch of white poinsettias

Build your wreath beginning with the frosted greenery. Secure it with your trusty glue gun. Add the glittery pick, then tuck the poinsettias in the corner. Find scattered places to glue your ornaments. Finish your wreath

with a simple 3 loop bow with long tails.

I love the way the white and ivory stand out against

my newly painted black doors!

I'm liking the silver and the glitter!!!

The velvet ribbon adds a lusciousness too!

I made two, but they aren't completely matching.

I like to mix things up a bit!

There's more work to be done outside. I'm adding a matching garland around the outside of the doors, plus a little surprise, so stay tuned!

{Homemade Granola} in a Jar

I am a HUGE fan of Granola!

I began making it myself when I was trying to lower my sugar intake.

I found that the store bought granola was always

WAY TOO SWEET for my tastes.

I also like to vary the ingredients and try different combinations.

This is my favorite Fall version. It has roasted Pumpkin Seeds which are also called Pepitas! I include another favorite nut...Pistachios!

Dried fruit is a staple in most granolas,

so for this one I add dried tart cherries...yum!

Homemade Granola

2 3/4 cup oats (old fashioned)

1 c. coconut

1/2 c. flaxseed

1 c. pistachios

1/2 c. pepitas, roasted & salted pumpkin seeds

1 Tablespoon salt

1/2 c. brown sugar

1/3 c. maple syrup

1 teaspoon vanilla

1/3 c. coconut oil

3/4 c. dried tart cherries

Preheat oven to 300°. Mix together the oats, coconut, flaxseed and nuts in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, combine salt, brown sugar, syrup, vanilla and oil. Pour over oat mixture and stir until coated. Spread mixture out on a jellyroll pan and bake for 20-25 minutes, stirring halfway. Let cool and stir in the dried cherries. Keep stored in an airtight container.

I love to eat it just as is,
but you can pour milk over it, or mix it with yogurt and fresh fruit.

It also makes a great gift in a jar!

Glare No More {Window Tinting}

I love large picture windows! In our Living Room, there is a configuration of six windows. The view is of our backyard and covered patio.

Due to last summer's drought, we lost a treasured Burr Oak tree this fall. Sadly, it provided not only lovely foliage, but it shaded our patio and kept the sun from invading our Living Room at sunset.

After the tree was removed, my husband and I thought about planting another tree. In the meantime, the whole family was getting blasted by the glaring sun each and every afternoon. An immediate solution was needed!

Window tinting became the next viable option. I did my research online, and quickly discovered a favored brand and product. I found rave reviews for Huper-Optik Nano-Ceramic Films window tinting products.

Fortunately, I found a company in town that installs this product. John, from Invision Window Tinting came by and gave me an estimate. He showed me the ideal balance of tinting. No one wants their room to feel like a cave, but yet you want to cut down on the glare. The Huper Ceramic 30 was perfect.

As the pictures hopefully show, the tinting highlights the colors, but without the glare. I am so pleased with how this came out, so I wanted to share this info with you. Not only has the glare been tempered, the tinting reduces heat and fading. Hoping the heating/cooling bills will be lower as well.

This last pic was taken at full sun and glare! Wish I had a pic of the glare before tinting, but I'm afraid it would have been one bright blob. If you live in the south Texas area and are in need of window tinting, I can highly recommend John and his team. You can find more information on their website here.

The outside of these windows have been cleaned since I took this pic...haha! All you need is a bucket of warm water, with a few drops of Dawn liquid dish detergent. Apply with a sponge, then use a good squeegee and your windows will sparkle!!!

Dinner in a Pumpkin...revisited!

I am celebrating!

It's my One Year blogiversary!!

This was my second post, so I thought I'd share it again,

since NO ONE saw it the first time!

You can laugh along with me...I don't mind!

I'm excited to share this recipe with you. I made it for dinner the other night, and my mouth still waters everytime I think about it! I made a few adjustments to the original recipe from Epicurious.

1 pumpkin, about 3 pounds (I used 2 small pie pumpkins)
Salt and freshly ground pepper
1/4 pound stale bread, cut into 1/2-inch chunks (1 c. croutons)
1/4 pound cheese, such as Gruyère, Emmenthal, cheddar, or a combination, cut into 1/2-inch chunks
2–4 garlic cloves, coarsely chopped
4 slices bacon, cooked and chopped (I used Jimmy Dean sage sausage)
About 1/4 cup sliced green onions
1/2 cup pecans
About 1/3 cup heavy cream
Center a rack in the oven and preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a glass pan with Pam, to prevent pumpkins from sticking.

Using a very sturdy knife—and caution—cut a cap out of the top of the pumpkin (think Jack-o-Lantern). Clear away the seeds and strings from the cap and from inside the pumpkin. Season the inside of the pumpkin generously with salt and pepper, and put it in the baking pan.

Toss the bread, cheese, garlic, sausage, and green onions together in a bowl. Season with pepper, and salt to taste.—and pack the mix into the pumpkin. The pumpkin should be well filled—you might have a little too much filling, or you might need to add to it. Pour the cream into the pumpkin. You want the mixture nicely moistened. (If you have any extra mixture, just put it in another dish and bake it alongside the pumpkins.)

Put the cap in place and bake the pumpkin for about 45 minutes to 1 hour—or until everything inside the pumpkin is bubbling and the flesh of the pumpkin is tender enough to be pierced easily with the tip of a knife. You can also take the pumpkin top off for the last 20 minutes to brown. I sliced the pumpkins into fourths to serve.

Additional personal notes: I don't ever seem to have "stale" bread around. It's either fairly fresh, or green...so I toasted 4 pieces of wheat sandwich bread slices. Instead of bacon, I used a pkg. of Jimmy Dean sage sausage. Heat up a saute pan, crumble the sausage and cook until no longer pink, then drain grease. I did use gruyere cheese, because it's just so creamy, and decadent. I also added a cup of homemade croutons (I always keep a baggie full of croutons I made with bakery bread of whatever type, that are tossed with olive oil, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes. Then toasted in 350 oven for 15 or so minutes, until dried out and toasty.) I added the garlic, green onion tops, and pecans.

I used 2 fairly small pie pumpkins (5 -6 inches diameter). I did have a little extra stuffing, so I baked it in a separate smaller pan. Both pumpkins were fork tender in about 45 minutes. If using a bigger pumpkin, it may take longer.

This would make a great side dish, or main meal. Hope you enjoy!

{Fall Wreath} Porch Decor

My Fall porch is done!

The wreaths are hung with burlap ribbon...

The mums have found their spot...

and I am in love with the blue moon pumpkins!

Since I have double doors, that means double wreaths.

I made mine to compliment each other, rather than matchy-matchy.

I used some natural elements, like a gourd, antler, pheasant feathers,

and dried flowers.

I also incorporated faux items, such as greenery, berries,

gourds and leaves.

A touch of ribbon peeking out for a little more color!

Fall Porch {Lighting}

Lighting...

it can add drama, interest, and beautiful effects!

I created a hovering grapevine and fall leaf light

for my front porch.

It's great for the little goblins as well as through Thanksgiving weekend!

To some, in the daytime, it may look like a "rat's nest"!

But, by night, it's a subtle lighting overhead that I think

highlights the porch space.

I also have my Pumpkin Topiary Lights flanking

each side of the porch, which also provides

a nice "polka dotted" lighting effect!

Here are the How-to's:

First, we (and I mean "my husband"), strung 3 strands of wire from above

the front doors to the wooden braces at the front of the porch.

Next, we wove grapevine over and around the wire.

Then tried to evenly distribute a strand of white Christmas lights.

And lastly, laid some branches with fall leaves in the vacant spots.

(If you don't have real fall leaves, like me....

just wire some fake ones onto some bare branches.

I don't think anyone can tell the difference, do you?)

It looks a little dwarfed here, but from the street,

it gives the entire porch a very nice glow.

And...

the front doors are done!

They are black!!!

The lights on the topiaries and the grapevine are synced with

a dusk/dawn timer, which is so very handy!

So, I'm a little behind with the rest of my porch.

Wreaths, mums, and a few more pumpkins are on their way!

{Book Pumpkins} Fall Vignette

Pumpkins, pumpkins everywhere!

sweater pumpkins, lid pumpkins, burlap pumpkins, jute pumpkins

and it goes on and on!

When I discovered Pinterest about a year ago...

I saw this book pumpkin made at Craftberry Bush.

You can find the complete instructions here.

I immediately started looking through my bookshelves for books that I could cut up and tea stain!

I knew I wanted 3....

a Big, middle, and small

I followed all the instructions...

and spritzed them with spray glitter, for an extra sparkle!

I used a chocolate brown wired ribbon.

I left the back of the books "unglued",

since I knew I was placing them against the wall.

This way they wouldn't take up as much space.

You can even see a little bit of the glitter sparkle in this pic!

With the decorating rule of "3", I grouped them alongside a fall leaf garland. I placed some books and an antler on the right.

A tarnished silver bowl holds nutshells, pinecones, etc.

I placed a jagged piece of rock with a cross impression, as the final touch.
