Gratitude, Respect and Appreciation!!

As Monday dawns and I reflect on Greg and Christy's Wedding, I am filled not only with Gratitude, but with Respect and Appreciation for these two young people. Their love, determination, and steadfast devotion to a common goal resulted in a day to remember and lessons for us all.

As the afternoon beckons, I am reminded once again that my children are my Greatest Teachers and as a Mom I am called upon to Applaud their Accomplishments and share Aretha's Message with All.

Having spent the last several days in Christiansburg, Virginia, I witnessed first-hand Greg's calm confidence, his powerful mind and his steadfast determination to pursue his heart's desire. He knows what he wants, marches to the tune of his own drummer and wins the race with a steady pace. At 25, he is living with his soul mate in a home they bought together with their Great Dane, in an area far from his birth place and has been totally independent for the last four years.

He trusts himself, throws off negative influences, loves unconditionally, knows what brings him joy and moves toward it day by day! He is managing an organic restaurant, has honed his cooking and managerial skills, works 12 hour days, 5 days a week and greets each guest with a smile. Never asking for approval, treating others with kindness, answering only to himself, he gains my Appreciation and Respect!

Seeing Christy in action, I am struck by the self-confidence that has emerged in the last few years. Clearly, she has blossomed in love. She completely planned the wedding, bought her dress, shoes and arranged for both food and entertainment. At the reception, she reigned as a Queen, fully composed as she posed for pictures, danced, cut the cake and made appreciative remarks to those who helped her. She commands Respect!

I also appreciate Linda Sowers, J.R. Karr and Preston who have welcomed Greg into their family and appreciated his presence in Christy's life. My great appreciation is also extended to John Reeder and Mary Brun who took time off from work to make the cake, prepare the food and drinks.

Greg and Christy met, fell in love, found a way to combine their strengths and energy, buy their first home, get married, and surround themselves with those who love and support them.

As a Mom, living far from her first born, I am forever grateful to those around Greg and Christy who have supported their dreams, desires and visions.

I appreciate Mikie Moser for giving them the chance to work together; for hosting Christy's bridal shower, for giving birth to Belle, who was the cute flower girl, and for arranging for their wedding, reception and stay at the Nesselrod. I also appreciate Robbie Stewart, who delivered a touching toast to their long lasting friendship and served as Best Man.

The big day would not have been nearly as bright without the presence of Wendy Fore, who was the best lady-in-waiting, I've ever seen! She remembered the nutribar, the curling iron, the hairdo, applied Christy's makeup perfectly and signed the guest book with Laura Rose Smoke.

Wayne and Betty are also very much appreciated for their good counsel and support over the last several months leading up to their wedding. It meant so much to both Christy and Greg that Wayne officiated and blessed the union with a special prayer. Special thanks is also extended to Mark Gordon who ensured that everything at Nesselrod was picture perfect.

Greg and Christy are making great strides forward with the support of friends and family. They are moving in the direction of their dreams with focus, determination and commitment not often seen in young adults their age. I see their gentle spirits, their consistent actions, and their dedication which is awe-inspiring. The results are magical and their future beckons brightly.

I thank God for giving me these fine teachers!

Time Sensitive Data - Astrid Witt - A Wonderful Educator with a Story to Tell!

I hope you're having a great weekend! I just finished watching a great movie with my youngest son and welcoming my daughter home from her late night shift at work. My husband is at the beach and enjoying time with his brother and I plan to sleep in tomorrow! Oh yes, life is good!

As a busy Mom, I love weekends, things slow down a bit, I can stay up later and I can schedule in events that the work week doesn't allow. With this in mind, I wanted to make sure I got some great news to you! I could not go to bed before I made you aware of the phenomenal work being done by my dear friend and educator, Astrid Witt.

Astrid is passionate about educating and empowering our children and she often stays awake long into the night, pondering how she and other educators can reach and positively impact their lives. She has invested her heart, mind and soul along with her life savings to bring this event to other Moms and Educators.

Astrid, like you and me, became concerned as she:

Watched kids struggle in school
Felt helpless trying to help
Wondered if their special talents were being ignored
Looked for help for hyperactive/hypersensitive kids

Meet a Visionary, Creating a Village for Special Families, One Family at a Time!

It is my deep pleasure to introduce you to Sandra Pearson, a wise woman, a wonderful mother, and a visionary with a vibrant dream to support special families with resources, tools and community. Sandra created OUR SPECIAL FAMILIES VILLAGE knowing that family members needed support, resources and recommendations.

This organization is an outgrowth of Sandra's own needs. She has created the Village that she needed when her son Matthew was first diagnosed with Autism at 3 years of age, 16 years ago. Sandra launched this new venture, announced its creation via social media tools and came into my life as this new year began.

While I was regaining my equilibrium after learning of my daughter's engagement from my husband's brother who had heard the news from Aunt Jean, who had learned of this announcement via Facebook, all BEFORE my daughter had shared the news with her father and I, Ms. Pearson entered my life and I met a kindred spirit.

We immediately hit it off; Sandra Pearson got it! As a mother of two young adults, Elizabeth and Matthew, she immediately identified with my disappointment and frustration. She applauded my coping skills and I was happy to share my experience with her village. You can watch as I share my story with Sandra.

As many of you know I have been focused on helping Moms of Young Adults with Special Needs for quite some time. I put together a telesummit and created the Finally, an IEP for Mom Experience because I knew first hand how lonely I felt as I confronted challenges in the world of special needs. Knowing that Moms need support if they are to continue to support their children into adulthood, I made it my mission and vision to create an Oasis of Hope and Support for Moms who are weary, worn out and in need of rejuvenation and respite.

Like the Village that Sandra has created, my Oasis, seeks to support Moms of Young Adults with Special Needs. At the Oasis, I fortify Moms and help them to develop their own Individualized Empowerment Plans, while letting them know of resources, tools, and other Moms who have walked in the Desert, survived and learned to embrace the adventure. I love connecting Moms with other Moms who know what it is like to get regular emergency calls, to attend countless IEP meetings, to advocate for services and support and get positive results.

So, with the goal in mind, I interviewed Sandra and asked her to share her vision and Village with you. With hopes to inspire you to move forward with hope, determination and focus on the road to becoming the role model you were meant to be. As 2012 Begins, My Baby Continues to March to His Own Drum!

Today, as I walked on the beach, I reflected and paused to write in the sand. Happy Birthday, Greg! While my first baby was far from me, thoughts of how our lives began together rushed over me, much like the waves rushing to the shoreline.

Twenty-Five years ago, my husband and I were sitting in the waiting room at Arlington Hospital, anxiously awaiting his arrival. My husband, grew impatient, left to feed our dog, thinking that Greg's birth mother would remain in labor for several more hours. A few minutes later, much to everyone's surprise he came forth, much earlier than expected. Suddenly like a wave, he arrived, and I was flooded with emotion as I became a Mom for the first time.

As I walked further, I continued to reflect on the last 25 years and what a joy and pleasure it has been to watch Greg grow. While Greg, my oldest, is celebrating his 25th birthday, I am celebrating his life. It is no accident, that I soon find two sand dollars on the shoreline. These I pick up with joy, knowing that I will be giving them to him and his bride to be in the next few weeks. Today, I am enjoying the gifts of time, wisdom and reflection. Today, I am empowered to see new possibilities all around me. While, 25 years ago, I thought my life was complete, I know now it was just beginning. Little did I know then, that life would never be the same again and that my individualized empowerment plan was in the making.

He began as a miracle from God and even today, he keeps me on my toes, keeps me guessing, and keeps me inspired.

Today, Greg lives in a rural community, works as a Chef in an Organic Restaurant, and he and his bride to be have bought their first home. He still walks to the beat of his own drum and continues to surprise us. Over Thanksgiving, we found ourselves happily forgoing a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner at home, to help he and Christy in moving from their farm house to their own home. Truly, life holds many surprises!

Growing up in Northern VA, I would never have guessed that his interest would take him down this road. As he was growing up, we made sure that he had the opportunity to play baseball, football, and soccer. We provided tae kwon do and piano lessons. Each time, we were sure he would want to pursue one of these pastimes on a deeper level and each time we were wrong.

While he enjoyed each extracurricular activity, when he entered high school, he surprised us and went out for Lacrosse. We wondered where the inspiration had come from. When he moved to Christiansburg, after pursuing college life, he happily reported that he loved the slower pace and the country life and I wondered where this fascination had developed.

As I looked through old photographs, a sudden understanding emerged. I came upon a few pictures that both surprised and delighted me. When he was little, we enjoyed taking him to the Reston Petting Zoo. We introduced him to horses, goats and chickens. Looking at the pictures now, I can see now how his early fascination began.

As we begin a new year, I encourage you to think about the memories you are making. I encourage you to take time to reflect. I encourage you to enjoy your discoveries, your loved ones, and every day miracles!

Dear Friends and Partners,

I am committed to giving voice to the unspoken dreams of young adults with special needs and find that I am most successful in my quest when I empower their moms first and foremost! An empowered Mom can move mountains and inspire her children to take action. A mom without power can barely get out of bed in the morning and does little to motivate her young adult.
I Believe:

If Mama Ain’t Transitioning, Ain’t Nobody Transitioning

and

“If Mama Ain’t Empowered, Ain’t Nobody Empowered!”

With these beliefs and commitments in mind, I created a telesummit for Moms of Young Adults with Special Needs. While all Moms have stressful jobs, the mom of a young adult with special needs has the most stressful job of all! While most moms can see a light at the end of the tunnel as their child goes off to college or to a job, the mom of the young adult with special needs, may not see an end in sight.

I know what that journey is like, I have seen first-hand, how lonely and tired I became while seeking appropriate educational and medical attention for my youngest son. I became thirsty for hope and support and nearly collapsed in frustration. Thanks to the support of my family, friends, and divine intervention, I found an Oasis in which to rest and regroup.

As I grew stronger, I heard the voice within me grow louder. As the months turned into years, I heard the command clearly: “Doreen, you must help those Moms to survive, if you want to give voice to unspoken dreams.”

When I retired from my government position in March, I simply did not have the energy to plunge into this endeavor. Instead, I nurtured my garden and soul, knowing that I would be ready when the time was right. In July, I felt better…and became more determined than ever to make a difference.

In early August, I learned that a Mom of a Young Adult with Special Needs grew so weary and distraught that she took her own life and the life of her 13 year son, choosing death rather than a continual battle with authorities on what was an appropriate educational setting for her son.

This sad story compels me to work on this project every day. Every day, I think of her and the unspoken dreams of her son, and I know why I am driven to do the work I am doing. I do not want these special moms to give up. I want to give them hope, support and the resources to refuel and refresh their spirits for the long journey.

Finally, an IEP for Mom ~ Individualized Empowerment Plan

Now that my federal career is over, I am launching a new venture! My Free Telesummit for Moms is launching October 10, 2011. It is entitled: Finally, an IEP for Mom, An Individualized Empowerment Plan for Moms of Young Adults who have Special Needs.

My purpose and passion is to give voice to unspoken dreams of young people with special needs. I feel that I am most successful when working with Moms. When Moms are supported, they can move mountains and pave the way to success. When they give themselves permission to dream, they give their children permission to dream. When they take action, their children take steps forward.

Unfortunately, many Moms are very familiar with Individualized Educational Plans and Special Education. Many are angry, frustrated, and ready to throw in the towel as they confront the unsuccessful launch of their adult children with special needs. They are exhausted and feel that they are running out of time.

To respond to these emotional challenges and lack of energy, I have created the Individualized Empowerment Plan for Moms with Young Adults with Special Needs. I will be launching this Free Telesummit beginning October 10th. I plan to encourage collaboration and facilitate a community of support, so Mom can finally rest easy and sleep at night.

Having mothered 3 children with unique learning challenges, I know how important a community of support is to each of us. When I have collaborated with others, I have been energized and have had much energy to share with my family, my friends and community.

I now coach moms who want to launch their young adult children into independence and a life of meaning and am interested in expanding my reach via this telesummit.

I have conducted workshops and training events with educators and parents. My most successful presentation was entitled, "If Mama Ain't Transitioning, Ain't Nobody Transitioning." I believe that the IEP Summit for Moms, will be well received as the needs of Mom are great and everyone benefits when Mom has an Individualized Empowerment Plan!

While I agree that all Mid Life Moms have stressful jobs, I believe Moms with Young Adults who have Special Needs, have the most stressful job of all! While Moms with Young Adults can often envision a time, when their adult children will be grown and gone, the Mom with a Young Adult with Special Needs, may not be able to see an end in sight.

LIFE ISN'T FAIR!
THERE ARE NO JOBS FOR ME!
I'M NOT SMART ENOUGH!
I CAN NOT NAVIGATE THIS TRANSITION ALONE!

In an effort to address these challenges, and to help my children to thrive, rather than survive, I decided to approach the transition process from a different angle and with a unique focus.

As a mother with three young adults with learning challenges, I have many people counting on me to “be there.” I have learned to be there for them, I had to first be there for me.

I knew that I had to work tirelessly and with purpose and resolve. I had to work smarter, not harder. Rather than focus on the challenges of my children, I decided to focus on my own competencies, my own resources and my OWN desired outcome.

In short, I decided to focus on my strengths and the strengths of my children and the teachers who were guiding them.

Somedays, we feel blue.

Somedays, we feel down and out..

Somedays, are filled with despair too...

Somedays, we just need to pout and shout....

Somedays, my halo falls off and my horns begin to sprout....

At such times, I like to sit down, to pray, to reflect, to journal, to talk to a dear friend and to find a way to believe that it is going to be all right. I like to take a nice hot bath, to read, and to listen to soothing jazz. I find music and quotes quite comforting on those tough days.

I found the following youtube offering on a friend's facebook posting and wanted to share it with you Mamas in Transition. It's hard work trying to balance the many demands before us. I know somedays, we need music and quotes to lift us up. On other days, it's just fun to be further inspired.

My Miracle Baby Turns 24 and Continues to Delight and Surprise Us!

Today, I reminisced alot, thinking over the last 24 years and what a joy and pleasure it has been to watch my children grow. Greg, my oldest, is celebrating his 24th birthday today and I am celebrating his life.

It seems like only yesterday, that we brought him home and called him our Gift from God. To read more about how his life with us began, please read My Favorite Christmas Story.

He began as a miracle from God and even today, he keeps me on my toes, keeps me guessing, and keeps inspiring me to be the best me possible.

Today, Greg and his bride to be are contemplating buying their first home on five acreas of beautiful VA countryside and he has dreams of developing his own chicken farm.

Growing up in Northern VA, I would never have guessed that his interest would take him down this road. As he was growing up, we made sure that he had the opportunity to play baseball, football, and soccer. We provided tae kwon do and piano lessons. Each time, we were sure he would want to pursue one of these pastimes on a deeper level and each time we were wrong.

While he enjoyed each extracurricular activity, when he entered high school, he surprised us and went out for Lacrosse. We wondered where the inspiration had come from.

When he moved to Christiansburg, after pursuing college life, he happily reported that he loved the slower pace and the country life and I wondered where this fascination had developed.

As I looked through old photographs, a lightbulb lit up. I came upon a few pictures that both surprised and delighted me. When he was little, we enjoyed taking him to the Reston Petting Zoo. We introduced him to horses, goats and chickens. Looking at the pictures now, I can see now how his early fascination began.

That's Incredible!! Four Pounds in Four Days while Eating Normally!!

I woke up today full of energy, quickly got on my exercise clothes, and jumped on the Wii board for a body check. Much to my delight, I found that I had met my two week goal earlier than anticipated. The Wii screen screamed, that's incredible!! And indeed it was!

4.1 pounds lost in the last 4 days!!

What have I done??? First, I proclaimed my desire to loose 30 pounds in 90 days and began at the end of November. With encouragement from many of you, I got into action, exercising most every day, drinking lots of water, and eating less. Still the weight seemed to cling. Then I decided to pick up Marianne Williamson's book on weight loss, and do as she suggested.

Let Go and Let God!

First, I had to admit that this weight problem was bigger than me, but not bigger than God. I began to pray, confront issues of fear, anger, resentment. Not easy for me to do, as I try to stuff these feelings inside, but I figured I needed to do things differently, if I wanted better results.

With God by my side, I began expecting a miracle and envisioned myself thinner, lighter and happier and decided to embrace the good, the bad and the ugly in me and those around me. They have all been doing double duty and trying hard to get me to acknowledge them. Well, I finally surrendered, embraced all of me and the wonderful people around me, and my weight shifted.

My journey is just beginning. I am excited and I would love to have company on this journey. I still have 23 pounds to shed between now and the end of February. I know I can do it with you and God in my life. Please join me if you are inclined.

Unexpected Joy!

When we are relaxed, at peace and at ease, we are often surprised with what lands in our lap! This idea surfaced as I gazed upon a picture that I found on my facebook profile. As I surveyed my bulging eyes, I was transported to the event which had taken place the day before Thanksgiving. Peyton, a great big Great Dane was visiting with us and had surprised me with an unexpected jump upon my lap.

I was resting comfortably on our family room sofa, with my legs propped up and extended. I was feeling good about the day, my surroundings and myself. I had enjoyed a good family breakfast; I had gone shopping, found everything I had been looking for; and was feeling happy, content and relaxed. Sure, Thanksgiving was right around the corner, but I knew I could count on the help of friends and family to pull it all together. So I threw my feet up and relished the moment of peace.

Out of nowhere, Peyton appeared. She jumped up on the couch, and before I knew it, she had spread her large frame across my body. Much to my surprise, she and I bonded, as we relaxed together on that couch. In my younger days, I would have been running around like a chicken with her head cut off, much too busy to pause and much too uptight, to allow a dog to get up on my couch.

With joy in my heart, I realize that I am slowing down and am opening up to love, no matter when or where it shows up! I secretly applaud my willingness to relax...This was not always my mode of operation. I realize, I am indeed a Mama in Transition!!!

Tomorrow is Sunday. How will you relax? What will you do to share the love in your heart? Where will you get that unexpected joy?

Banish Your Doubts!! Success is Coming!!

Who would believe that the Roses above were blooming in my garden at the same time the Fall leaves were falling? Banish your doubts and believe you can have your heart's desires!!

I love roses and the roses above came from my garden. As I gaze upon them, my heart expands. I realize, that they brought a special joy to my heart and adorned my Thanksgiving buffet. This year, I gave voice to my desire, shared my hopes with my husband, planted this rosebush on my anniversary in August and this Thanksgiving went out to the garden, where leaves were falling all around me and harvested these blooms.

At this time of Thanksgiving, I am filled with gratitude for the people and family who have strengthened my beliefs and resolve. They have shown me time and again that anything is possible, if I pause to think about what I really want, share my dreams and take action!

My oldest son, Greg, recently shared his dream to buy a small farm house with 5 acres in the beautiful hills near Blacksburg, VA. Together, we toured the farm together, via the internet. We previewed the inviting fireplace, the cozy kitchen, the flowering fruit trees, the pond and the green acres where he hopes to raise organic chickens. Suddenly, his dreams took on a new vitality that spurred him to take additional action.

The next day, Greg actually drove to the property and reported that he and a trusted friend had surveyed the land. The land was in great condition and perfect for his planned activities. He has plans to take it a step further, to get prequalified for a loan, to get partners on board and to tour the inside with Christy, his bride to be, on Monday. I have no doubt that his dreams are moving toward manifestation.

May you be blessed with many hopes and desires..with friends and family who will support you and with beliefs that banish your doubts! If you can concieve it, if you can believe it....you can achieve it!

Jodee Blanco - A Survivor of Bullying Shares Her Heart and Soul!

Tonight, I did two things to nourish my heart and soul. I shared my hopes for a brighter tomorrow and took action!

First, I met a dear friend, sampled a few delectable treats, feasted my eyes on beautiful decorations, learned of some local wineries and shared some hopes and dreams for the coming week. Such a grand way to begin an evening.

Little did I know, my evening would get even better!

At 6:30 pm, I battled rain and traffic to attend a special presentation by Jodee Blanco who was speaking at my church on the topic of bullying. This topic is near and dear to my heart and soul, as I have heard one too many stories of young lives that are traumatized by insensitive comments and actions. I have read too many stories of cyber-bullies and I wanted to know what I might do to keep my kids safe.

I very much wanted to hear what this survivor might be able to share with me. Looking at Jodee now, you would never know....

Jodee told of her school days and the torment she experienced daily. She bared her soul and history. She reenacted her junior and high school experience and she had me transfixed.

She talked about being pushed down the steps, being pinned down by several students while others ran to the parking lots to make snowballs which they stuffed into her mouth, ears and clothing. They left her there choking.

She talked about the nightmare of going from table to table in her high school cafeteria and never finding a place to sit. As she asked each group if she might join them, they rejected her, sneered at her, and she was humiliated at every turn. From that day forward, she spent her lunch period in the restroom eating stale snicker bars.

She talked about her senior yearbook being ruined by a hateful remark when all she wanted was one pleasant memory of her graduation year. She talked about her one friend, Mitch, who saw what was being written. She described his eyes welling up, described him putting his face in his hands and sitting silently, while other students walked in, took a look and snickered.

Much to my delight, Jodee's story has a happy ending. She actually returned to her high school twenty years later and found a way to forgive her classmates and herself for believing the lies that were repeated time and time again throughout her school days. She wrote a book about her experiences, then another and married Mitch. She now travels all over, speaking to children, teachers and parents on what they can do to stop bullying.

If you have been bullied or are concerned about your children, your neighbors, or community, you can learn from her too. You may wish to read her book or join Jodee's anti-bullying community. You might want to read Jodee's blog to learn how to manage bullies and reduce bullying in school, on the playground, in the neighborhood and on-line.

Jodee recommended Social Shield as a way of keeping our kids safe on line. While many of our teens are reluctant to befriend us on Facebook, we can rest easier with Social Shield. I came right home and ordered Social Shield. I am currently testing out its capabilities for free and while this system is new to me, it looks very promising. I hope to report more about it in the days ahead.

While reading the Social Shield blog, I came across many resources, designed to keep our kids safe, because while our kids may be "cyber savvy" and know more about new technology than we do, our kids are not necessary "cyber secure." The online resources found here, from Stay Safe Online, provide tips about basic Internet safety, online gaming, cyberbullying, social networking and more.

I learned much and tonight I will sleep better, knowing that I took action to feed my heart and soul.

The story below reminded me of my Grandma. She was fond of saying, "Little kids, little problems. Big kids, big problems." As a parent with three young adults and one still in his teens, I can tell you, it takes big courage to be a parent! You are called on to make big decisions and it is often tough! It is also isolating. Many times, we feel mean and alone.

An October, Like No Other!

Today is Halloween, October 31st, the last day of the month and it will end like many others ... with candy, costumes, and many scary masks.

While similar to many other Halloweens of years gone by, this October is like no other in our lifetime. This October has five Fridays, five Saturdays, and five Sundays. The last time this occurred was 823 years ago.

While some may think that this odd occurence on the calendar will bring them good fortune, I am wondering what I will post... What has this October brought to our attention, like never before?

Cyber-bullying springs to mind as it has dominated the news throughout October. People everywhere talk about its consequences and it is clear that the bullying of 2010 is worse than a punch in the nose or snide comments I remember receiving as a youngster.

In fact, bullying this year has led to a rash of suicides and deep emotional scars, making us all wonder what can be done to turn this horror into a beneficial lesson for us all.

On this note, I turn to the Horrors of Halloween. The world can be a scary place, especially when it is faced alone.

Did you know that Halloween brings terror to many young children and teens who do not fear scary monsters, squeaking doorways, or haunted houses but instead fear being left out, more than anything else?
Did you know that many young people will be rejected by their peers, left behind, and have their candies taken by neighborhood bullies?
Did you know that young adults often act out like monsters not to scare you, not to ruin your day, but in an attempt to be noticed?
Did you know that many parents will lay awake tonight and wonder what they can possibly do to make Monday, Tuesday and all the days to follow better for their children who are less than self confident, who are not in the mainstream and often bear the brunt of insensitive remarks.

According to Dr. Cornel West, University Professor of Religion and African American Studies at Princeton University, "We have witnessed the breakdown of the social systems that nurture our children. Our rootless children… have no cultural armor to protect them while negotiating the terrors and traumas of daily life."
Dr. West tells us that young people need:

Families who will stand up for them;
A community of support to sustain them; and
Hope that things can be different.

So what is the answer to indifference, exclusion, and to bullying behavior? Let me share with you responses that I have seen to bullying behavior. I want you to know that people everywhere are confronting this issue head on and I want you to envision a brighter tomorrow.

Imagine young people being supported by a community of family members who compassionately believe in them in the most trying circumstances. Imagine a mother acknowleging her child's weaknesses and then reaching out to other parents and asking for suggestions that can help her to help her child in finding friends. Imagine many other mothers and fathers being sensitive and responsive to this mother's pain and sharing lessons they have learned that have fostered confidence and friendships in their childrens lives.

Imagine a church pastor who has chosen to stand up to bullying and has invited his entire congregation and the surrounding parishes to a special community seminar featuring Jodee Blanco, a nationally known anti-bullying activist and author of New York Times best selling memoir Please Stop Laughing at Me... and the newly released sequel Please Stop Laughing at Us...One Survivor's Extraordinary Quest to Prevent School Bullying.

Imagine teachers and parents working together to strengthen the victim by training targeted children to act more assertively. Look more closely, as you see students in conflict invited to work with a trained teacher or peer-mediator to find a mutually acceptable way of resolving a dispute that may underlie the bullying behavior.

Imagine another author, Sam Horn, who saw this behavior as intolerable, years before it became national news and wrote, Take the Bully by the Horns. Imagine reading Sam's book and sharing the contents with your family, your children and your friends and living your life with a new found confidence.

Imagine finding an author who speaks to your soul and explains serendestiny. Watch Sam's video on serendestiny to help you honor your hunches and move your life forward.

The answer to bullying, the answer to exclusion, and the answer to complacency, can be found in activities outlined above where real people... parents, teachers, pastors, the young, the old and those somewhere in-between have come together to form relationships, foster courage and creativity.

Together, working with courage and creativity:

we can create relationships,
we can give our children a community of support,
we can stand up to indifference, roar for compassion and rail against exclusion.

Here's to courage. May all the Mom's In Transition out there, roar out loud! According to Dr. Cornell West, courage is contagious. Listen to his words and be empowered to toss off complacency and don your courageous attire. It's Halloween!

Known as one of America’s most gifted, provocative, and important public intellectuals, Dr. West gives us much food for thought.

Nourishing our Souls - Before Bed!

Life has a funny way of nourishing our souls, especially when we are least expecting it. This message came to me at the most unexpected time, just when I was getting ready to head to bed.

Today, I reached out to my friends on Facebook and asked for recommendations on blogs that made their spirits soar. I wanted to know which blogs they read and which blogs were meaningful to them. I was asking for recommendations as I am always looking for inspiration.

No replys, nothing came back, so I assumed my posting had failed. I asked my daughter to look for my earlier post and to reply if she found it. A few minutes later, I heard from her.

She did find it, she did reply, and while she did not specify which blog she liked, she did make my spririts soar with a simple message. ILY.

Before heading to bed, I decided to check Facebook, one last time. There I found a message and a blog post, that did touch my soul and warm my heart. It is from Maria Salamao-Schmidt who writes a blog post every Friday. Maria's post was heartfelt and lovingly shared with me and all her readers. I hope you will read it and let me know what you think.

I believe you will enjoy Maria's post. She is a Mama who multi-tasks, takes time to laugh at herself, and takes time to reflect! She is surely a Mama in transition and a role model and inspiration to many, including me. I am sure she will sell many books in the months ahead.

Her posting today, reminds me of a quote I read earlier in a message from Francine Allaire, Sales and Marketing Star turned Daring Entreprenuer, who reported, "Personality and Passion, not Perfection, Produces Profits."

As I head to bed and post this blog, I am still wondering...What blogger makes your heart sing? Does the blogger's message nourish your soul? Does his/her message ring true?
