Problems with java and javac commands? Do the following

This is a branch from the usual discussion about java. You don’t really need this if you didn’t have any errors when executing the java –version and javac –version commands in the last post. You probably also don’t need it if you’re using an IDE since the commands are run internally for you. Now, let’s start sorting things out.

The windows command prompt has inbuilt commands. You can also run other executables from the command line as long as the command prompt knows where to find the executables. In order to find the executables, it searches the current directory in which you are and also the path (which is just a list of directories you specify). If the javac –version command doesn’t run, it is likely you have not included it in your path. Let’s do that now.

Even though I strongly advise you to do this yourself by following either method 1 or 2, I have included a small utility written in python to search for your java installation and add it to the path for you. You can find this in method no 3

Method 1: Using the command prompt

1. Open an elevated command prompt window (press Windows key to open the start menu, type cmd, right click on the cmd and select run as administrator)

2. Type path. The output you get are the list of search folders in which command prompt looks for commands or executables

3. Type setx PATH "%path%;%ProgramFiles%\Java\jdk-9\bin" /m and press enter (If you have installed another version of java, the jdk-9 part will have to change. If you installed the 32 bit version of the jdk on a 64 bit version of Windows, the %ProgramFiles% will have to change. You can also just open a folder and navigate to the location of the installation of the jdk and copy the path to the directory. It should look something like C:\Program Files\Java\jdk-9\bin)

4. Type setx JAVA_HOME %ProgramFiles%\Java\jdk-9 /m and press enter

5. At this point, you’re done. Now we have to check to see if everything worked. Type start and in the new command window, type the javac –version command and press enter. If it gives you the right version of java installed, you’re really done. Otherwise, the path you specified was incorrect.

Congratulations, you’re done.

Method 2: Using the Advanced System Settings dialog

1. Open a folder and navigate to the jdk folder. Copy the path to the folder from the address bar

2. Open the run dialog and type sysdm.cpl. This should open the system properties dialog box

3. Switch to the advanced tab and click on environment variables

4. Under the System variables, locate the variable named path and edit it

5. Paste the path you copied into the value column at the end of the values that already exist. Make sure there is a colon ; separating the previous entries from the current one. (On the latest build of windows 10 as you can see below, you need to click New and paste into the empty field)

6. Press OK

7. Click New under the System variables and type the variable name: JAVA_HOME. Under the variable value, paste the copied value there without the \bin at the end.

8. Click OK to close all the open dialogs.

9. Restart all command prompt windows and the changes will take effect.

Method 3: Using a script

You can use this utility as a last resort if all else fails. It is written in python and compiled to run on windows.

If you already have python installed and configured on your windows system, I encourage you to use the python source instead, else, you can use the windows executable instead.

My Java Journey–Installing the necessary software

This is part of the series of posts on My Java Journey. In order to follow the discussions, please do well to read the previous post before proceeding to this one. If you haven’t read any of the posts, I encourage you to start here.

Before we begin some real work, we have to make sure all necessary software are properly installed and configured. I’ll take you through the installation of the Java Development Kit (JDK 9) and Eclipse IDE on Windows. Unfortunately, I will not cover installation on Mac or Linux. I will however provide some links below the post that will guide the users of Mac or Linux to install the necessary software.

Installing the JDK (6 minutes)

If you haven’t downloaded the JDK already (I wonder what you’re waiting for), go ahead and download it from here.
Below are the screens you will see during the installation process. I advise you keep the default settings unless you know what you are doing.

1. Launch the installer and press yes when prompted for user account control permissions

2. Press next on the screen to proceed to the next screen

3. Press next on the screen above after changing whatever you wish to change. I advise you keep the options that have been given. You should see the screen below the installation then proceeds. Wait a while for it to complete.

4. This screen shows when the process above completes. Press next to proceed with the JRE (Java Runtime Environment) installation. Feel free to uncheck Enable java content in browser, but I advise you leave it there so we can have a little fun in the browser.

5. The installation of the JRE also proceeds on it’s own until it finishes

6. Click close to finish

Installing Eclipse IDE for Java SE Developers

If you think installing the JDK was easy, then you’ll be amazed how easy installing Eclipse is. Eclipse comes as a portable zip which you just need to copy to a location of your choice. You can run the executable file from there anytime you want.

If you’ve not downloaded Eclipse yet, download it from here.

1. Open the eclipse zip file with your favourite zip archiving or deflation software. Windows Explorer is able to create and extract zip archives so if you don’t have a third party zip archiver installed don’t worry. Below are three views of how the opening the Eclipse zip will look like

Drag the folder named eclipse to any location of your choice. I advise you either put it on the desktop or in your program files folder

The eclipse launcher is one that we will be using multiple times during the learning process so we need to make it easy to access. I advise you either create a shortcut of it to your desktop, pin it to your taskbar or pin it to your start menu.

Before we begin

Everything we need for now is installed. We just need to make sure we are all setup and configured properly. We will do this using the command prompt to check on a few things.

1. Launch the command prompt. (If you don’t know how to do this, just press Win + R, type cmd and press enter).
2. Type in the command java –version. You should see the current version of Java you have installed. If you don’t it probably means you have not installed java correctly or you have issues with your path. We’ll fix the latter soon

3. Type javac –version. You should see the current version of the java compiler

If everything works up to this point, all you need to do is flex your fingers and continue to learn Jshell, a new feature of Java 9 which has been in other programming languages for sometime now.

My Java Journey - What you need

Welcome to the third post in this series of posts that attempts to introduce the beginner to programming using Java. Before you get started, I hope you have read the previous write-up about what Java is.

Any way, I have some Good news - Everything you need to write programs in Java can be obtained free online.

Text Editor
You will need a text editor to type the instructions that the computer will execute as your program. These instructions that you type are called your source code. The text editor you need here must be a plain text editor. In other words, it should not be able to add text formatting like bolding, italicizing and underlining. On a windows machine, you can use notepad. It is not advisable to use rich text editors like Wordpad, MS Word, Text Edit(Mac), etc. If it becomes crucial to your health that you should use one of those, please remember not to format the text and save it as plain text.

There are however some specialised text editors that make programming easier. Notepad++, Emacs, Sublime Text and Atom are some examples. These ones give you features like colour-coding, line numbering, code formatting and code suggestion which will make your programming easier. As if that is not good enough, there are Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) that simplify most of the work you’ll be doing during programming for you in one place. They provide syntax highlighting. Some IDEs are smart enough to tell you better ways of writing some lines of code. Some of the common IDEs are NetBeans, Eclipse, IntelliJ and BlueJ. For the purposes of this series of post, I’ll be discussing only the use of Eclipse. You can use any other IDE that you are comfortable with.

Java Development Kit (JDK)

Apart from a text editor or IDE, you will definitely need the Java Development Kit. This is a free software that allows you to write programs in Java, compile them and deploy them. You can download a copy from the oracle site. The current version as of writing this is version 9. Just accept the license and download the version that is right for your platform. Install it and we’re good to go

Patience

That’s the last thing you will need before we begin. After a lot of internet search, I couldn’t find a link that allows you to download this one .
I won’t speak much about this, all I’ll do is quote Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: “The heights by great men reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight, but they while their companions slept, were toiling upward in the night.”

My Java Journey - What is Java?

This is the second post from a series of posts about my personal journey with Java. If you haven’t read the first post and the disclaimer, you can do that now.

See how people use different languages in speaking with each other? Well, Java is a language that computers speak among many other languages. This is not entirely true. If you could hear two computers speaking, you will probably hear something like 01001000 01100101 01101100 01101100 01101111 … – just a series of zeroes and ones - and that won’t make lots of sense. This series of zeroes and ones is known as binary.
Humans need to be able to speak in this way in order to speak to or instruct computers to perform tasks (programming). Due to the difficulty in this, other computer languages were developed that closely resemble human language. Java is just one example of such a language. Others are C++, C, Python, Perl, Ruby, Ada, JavaScript and PHP. Hundreds of programming languages exist.

Normally, computers will not be able to understand such languages. To remedy the situation, other programs convert the instructions into forms that can be understood by the computer. We say the program has been compiled. With a little more work, a program written on one machine should be able to work on other machines. Java has an upper hand here. With java, you scarcely need to compile a program that you write multiple times. Programs written in Java is able to run on any computer running any of the main operating systems. This is called cross-platform.

Unlike most languages which compile code to machine code, Java programs are compiled into bytecode. Bytecode is the machine code which does not depend on any specific platform. It is the machine language for the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). This code does not need to be compiled again for any other platform. All it needs is to be interpreted to work on another platform.

Enough of the long talk. Let’s dive right in.

My Java Journey – Intro

This is a series of posts which will attempt to introduce my cherished readers to the Java programming language. I started learning java a couple of years ago. Although it wasn’t easy at first, I think it was worth it.

Disclaimer: I am no expert at Java or any other programming language and therefore not remotely an authority in those regards. Actually I’m a nutritionist. Seriously. All I will be saying in this series of posts are from my thick head and from things I have read during my Java journey.

Advice: Eat fresh and neatly washed fruits and vegetables, drink loads of water, otherwise, you’ll start writing crazy stuff like I am doing now.

The first time I saw a computer was when I was 13 years (I’m from that part of the world ), and gosh, it was love at first sight. I was mostly fascinated about that little arrow (which I later heard was called a cursor) that moved on a screen according to the movement of a small device on the table. I got hooked. I enrolled for a class in which I learnt basic computer use. I enjoyed it but it really didn’t satisfy my urges. I needed more challenge.

Unfortunately after the class, I had little to no practice since my family owned no computer. Worse, I had to go to boarding school for 3 years. But it didn’t really sway me. Luck being on my side, my family got a computer while I was gone. I had the opportunity to use it every time I came back on holidays. That was really when my journey started.

I looked for something that was really challenging that I could do on the computer (playing road-rush and Super Mario was not much of a task, neither was typing and checking my mail once a while). I had the chance to corrupt our windows installation multiple times and do some formatting in the learning process. As it turned out, finding the solutions to my computer problems were more fun that playing with clippit in Microsoft word 2003.

I happened to chance upon programming languages a while later and from what I read, it wasn’t an easy thing to do. I thought to myself ‘I’ve met my match today’. I did some reading and the name Java kept appearing. That was when I made the decision to learn Java.

After my secondary school education, I continued with my infatuation (or maybe it was love) with programming. I read about windows batch programming and other stuff. It was then that I chanced on a tutorial that I really love (God bless you David J. Eck). It was a lot of reading and I read it. By then, I had left home for the university to read nutrition (I told you I was a nutritionist), without my own computer. I had to do most of the reading on my “Chinese phone” – a non-smart phone that has an eBook reader. I had to convert the tutorial to txt and read. The least chance I had with other’s computers, I tried to practice what I read. All my resources were on a pen drive which I bought.

The learning was slow, having to combine it with my academic work. I wrote my first GUI program 3 years later and I’ve been at it since then. I am not in any way saying it has to be difficult for everybody, people even have it worse. I’m only trying to say “persevere!”. Next, I'll speak about what Java is.

Status Grabber

A feature was recently introduced into WhatsApp which allows your contacts to upload images and videos as status messages. These images and videos automatically disappear after 24 hours. The only way you could see them again is if the uploader re-uploads it or sends it to you.

Status Grabber is an app which automatically saves all the lovely statuses that you view in WhatsApp. This allows you to watch them at any time you want. You can perform many actions actions with this images and videos that are saved with this app including using them as your WhatsApp profile or background picture, contact photo, etc.

Good part about the app is that, it is totally free and very easy to use. All you need to do after installing the app is just launch WhatsApp and view the statuses of your contacts. The app will do the rest. Start the app and view all the statuses that have been saved, both image and video.

In this app, video statuses and images are separated. The app also has some customizable options including hiding the images and videos saved from the android gallery.

Ewe Catholic Hymnal (Dziƒomɔ)

This brought me to design a new app with hymns and prayers. The hymns are taken from the Ewe Catholic Hymnal, Dziƒomɔ.
This app contains all the hymns (including the latin hymns) in the Dziƒomɔ, the hymnal and prayer book for catholics who speak the Ewe language. It also contains some prayers from the Dziƒomɔ.

The app hopes to cater for people without the hymn book or who will prefer to use their smart phones for searching hymns rather than the hymnal since the app has greater flexibility of use compared to the hard copy of the hymn and prayer book. Some of the features included in the app are listed below.

List of hymns as they appear in the Dziƒomɔ

This app lists the hymns in order as they appear in the hard copy of the Dziƒomɔ. It does not only list the Ewe hymns but also the latin hymns that appear at the ending part of the Dziƒomɔ. The hymn number for each hymn is written right beside it. Just tap on any hymn to view the lyrics.

Search for hymns

That moment that you did not hear the MC mention the hymn number, you have the option of searching for any hymn using any word (or sentence) found within it. The search is so flexible that, spaces and accents do not matter. Even though it has a dedicated keyboard for Ewe, it accepts search for c, which is not found in the Ewe language, to mean ɔ.
The search can be done using small or capital letters. The search bar also accepts hymn numbers. Type in the hymn number in the search bar to find the hymn with that number. Do well to use the custom keyboard that comes with the app.

Download this app now

Custom Keyboard

The app spots its own custom keyboard that has the letters of the Ewe alphabet that do not appear on the default android English keyboard. This helps in entering such letters in the search box and any other place you need to enter letters of the Ewe alphabet. The keyboard by default shows only one row of keys. Accented characters can be shown by clicking the ellipses at the right of the keyboard.

Zoom Hymn and Prayer

When viewing hymns or prayers, you can zoom in and zoom out to the size you want. The zoom button is by default hidden. Once you tap on the screen whiles viewing a hymn, it is displayed at the bottom right of the screen.

Make Corrections to Hymns and Prayers

Even though the words of the hymns and prayers have been double checked, in case you still come across an error, you can make corrections to the words and submit them. Don't forget to reload the hymn or prayer after any edit. Also, you can add completely new prayers to those already added.

Add Favourites

You can mark prayers and hymns that you like to your list of favourite prayers and hymns. This enables you to access them all at one place.

Upload and Download Audios to hymns

You have the option to upload an audio for hymns. For hymns that have audios uploaded, you may download them and play them from within the app.

Share Hymns With Others

Love a hymn or prayer, feel free to share it with others using other app on your device. Share via email, instant messaging apps, bluetooth, etc. For the hymns with audio, you can also share the audio files with others.

Give Feedback

Help support the development and update of the app by giving feedback on app performance issues, Feature suggestions, crash reports, etc. Also do well to check for updates and rate the app.

SA File Sharer - Say goodbye to file size limits

Whatsapp file sharer becomes SA File Sharer

Your favourite app, Whatsapp file sharer, an app which enables you to send files easily and quickly to others on your WhatsApp instant messenger contact list is no longer on play store.

This is due to the fact that, it did violate a trademark right of WhatsApp Inc in its use of the name WhatsApp. Worse was that, the app icon clearly resembled that of WhatsApp.

The updated version of the app, SA File Sharer, has been uploaded to play store. Please install it.

How to use the WhatsApp File Sharer app

The WhatsApp file sharer app enables you to share any type of file via WhatsApp. The following is a short information on how to make the best use of it.

After installation, launch the app
there are two tabs, the SEND and RECEIVE tabs
to send a file, you should use the send tabs
the files you receive show up in the received tabs

SENDING A FILE
1. Launch the app and swipe to the SEND tab if it doesn't already open
2. Tap on the SELECT button. This opens up a file browser from which you select the file you wish to send
3. Tap the SEND button. WhatsApp is automatically launched
4. Select the contact or group you wish to send the file to and tap send

RECEIVING A FILE
1. Launch the app and swipe to the RECEIVED tab
2. The file shows there with the WhatsApp-assigned file name. All files already extracted show up with a green tick, otherwise, it comes with a red cross
3. To recheck for new files, over-swipe down or click the REFRESH icon on the action bar.
4. Tap on the file you wish to retrieve. A pop-up menu appears
5. Tap the EXTRACT option.
6. The file is extracted into the folder you specified for extraction (The default extraction folder is your pictures folder/SWFS/extracted)
7. Open up your file manager and locate the file

CHANGING A SETTING
There are some settings that can be changed. The folder into which extracted files will be stored, the text used to prompt the recipient that he has received an embedded file, and the image into which the file is to be embedded.

CHANGING THE EXTRACTION FOLDER
1. Tap settings from within the app
2. Tap the EXTRACTED FILES DIRECTORY setting (This opens up a file browser)
3. Select the folder you wish the extracted files are stored into and tap SELECT button at the bottom

CHANGING THE PROMPT TEXT
1. Tap settings from within the app
2. Tap the DISPLAY TEXT setting
3. Enter the text you wish to be shown on the image to prompt the user
4. Tap OK

CHANGING THE IMAGE TO USE
1. Tap settings from within the app
2. Tap on the IMAGE TO USE setting. This opens a document browser
3. Tap on the image you will like to use.

How to hack Windows 7 Administrator Account

Disclaimer: You can't blame a drunk for spilling out rubbish, can you? Use at your own peril. ;)

There are times when you forget your password and cannot access your windows 7 system, or you need to install a software but you do not have the right privileges to do so. Maybe you just need to prove to your friends that you are the greatest hacker of all time, or you are absolutely up to no good and feel like hacking into a windows 7 machine. Here's how:

Step One: Accessing some files in the system folder
In this step, you will need to rename some files in the system folder. To do this, you'll need a way to access the system. If the computer is already on (with administrator privileges), you have no worries. Otherwise, consider a more "elegant" approach by using a live CD or Pen Drive

The file you need to edit is %systemroot%\system32\sethc.exe. Rename this file to something else (say sethc1.ex).
Now, make a copy of cmd.exe (found in the same folder) and rename the copy to sethc.exe
Reboot the system.

Step Two: Taking Control
Now, you have a couple of options, delete the administrator account, edit the password, create your own account with administrator privileges, etc. When the system boots to the logon screen, press the Shift key 5 times. This brings up a command prompt window, with administrator privileges. If the command window does not show up, press the shift key some more or repeat Step one.

Using the net commands take control.

Examples:
net user Staphy /add
(adds a new user account with the username Staphy with no password)

net user Staphy hello
(sets the password of the Staphy account to be 'hello')

net user Staphy /delete
(deletes the account with the name Staphy)

net localgroup administrators /add Staphy
(make the Staphy account into an administrator account)

You can prevent your windows 7 OS from being hacked this way by setting a BIOS password or encrypting the data on your HDD.

Boot a PC From Live CD or Live Pen Drive

At times, it becomes necessary to boot your computer from a pen drive or compact disc. This may happen when you need to recover files, test an operating system without installation or tweak some system files.

Hackers may also access your computer files without your knowledge by using a bootable media other than your hard drive to access them. In this way, they avoid most security features you may have set using your operating system. Some of my favourite methods of booting from a pen drive or CD are listed below:

Ubuntu Live CD/Pen Drive: You can run a full Ubuntu operating system from a pen drive without having to install it first. This helps you test the features to see if they suite you before installing. You can access the files on the hard disk of the computer on which you are running the Live CD.

Ophcrack Live Pen Drive: This is one of my preferred methods of accessing a computer avoiding most of the security put in place on your computer using your operating system. Additionally, they can use the ophcrack software to crack your windows password.

MiniTool Power Data Recovery: This software recovers your deleted files and partitions. It runs on a pen drive that it makes bootable. This is to reduce the risk of overwriting files and making recovery less effective.

Various other methods exist. You can add your preferred methods in the comments below. Some applications of booting from live cd or pen drive include using it to hack windows 7 administrator account.

[FIX] Bluestacks Error–Your Graphics Driver Seems to be Out of Date…

Recently, i tried installing Bluestacks Android App player on my Dell PC. Although the installation was successful, i got the error: Your graphics driver seems to be out-of-date. Bluestacks requires updated drivers to run. Update now?

I was quite alarmed because i had already updated my drivers from the Dell Website. Bluestacks however downloaded some drivers for me and those couldn’t install on my machine. Updating from Device Manager didn’t worked either. I was only told i had the best driver for my device.
And what did i do next? I searched online (as you are currently doing) and the easiest solution i found was a registry edit. This makes Bluestacks skip checking for out of date display drivers.
Already willing to try? Download this zip file containing this .reg file. Add the keys to the registry by double clicking it. Confirm when prompted. You’re done.
Another way is to add the keys manually.

Open the registry editor (Press windows key + R, Type regedit, Press enter)
Navigate to HKLM\SOFTWARE\BlueStacks\Guests\Android\Config
Right Click on the space to the right and choose new > DWORD (32- bit) value
Right Click on the new DWORD and choose modify
Give it a value name of SkipGraphicsDriverCheck
And a decimal value of 1
Click OK.

After all this while, the Electronic Voting software i had been developing is now ready for testing. I was able to implement a couple of other vote types.

I made one that would take care of cases in which you have options and the user would have to rate them in the order of preference. This is made typically to cater for cases when you might want to see the opinion of the user on which product is the most preferred or the least preferred. In E-Franchise, i dubbed this Scale of Preference.
Another vote type that i was able to implement is a Grading system. In this system, the user (voter) would choose among a list of options what he feels about a topic. For instance:

	Strongly Disagree	Disagree	Undecided	Agree	Strongly Agree
The president is the person i admire most
I would do anything to spend some time with the president

The user votes for one item in each category.

For security reasons, i also implemented a way to verify the authenticity of the voter. Since this may differ from one vote to another, i made this extendable. By default, i have written two methods which attempt to verify that the voter is a human and not a computer. I use simple Captcha verification ad an Arithmetic verification which asks the user a simple Math question. The voter is only allowed if he/she passes authentication. You can easily extend this to include a thumbprint verification to suite your vote.

The user interface might not be that beautiful, maybe too simple, but i made it that way to ensure ease of use.

Electronic Voting Application

Hey guys, I thought about the problems that usually crop up in paper voting and decided to implement the voting system in software. The project is ongoing but i would also like to know what functionality you would expect in your ideal electronic voting software.

Currently, the program runs the kind of voting where people stand for a particular office and one person is voted by the voters for each office (An Election).

I hopes to implements other vote kinds later. In the mean time, you can send your suggestions as to what to add or remove to make it an ideal program.

The software is implemented in the Java(TM) programming language. It is a client - server software where the clients can vote and the server collates the votes on the go. The client can also be run on a web page so that the voting can be done by visiting a site on which the applet of the client is.

The program is however pluggable and prospective plugin writers can contact me for the necessary files and enquiries.

This program will be out on the ................................ Well, i cant really tell, but i hope it will be out for testing soon.

Free Word Search Puzzle App

Hey, i had some spare time during this weekend and decided to write an application. I settled down with a small puzzle. I wrote a word search puzzle with not too pretty an interface but i think its worth trying out. The interface is however customizable by either changing the look and feel, setting an image background or a color background, etc.


The main Interface

The puzzle has a word list on the right hand side and the hidden words on the left hand side. The puzzle comes with a little short of thirty predefined word lists. You can however easily create your own custom list using the options menu.


Program settings

The puzzle allows the user to export it into three formats, Text, HTML and PNG Image. Unfortunately, the puzzle does not support printing (not for the moment). You can however print it out once you have it exported to your preferred format.

Meet the command prompt - The title command

Want one of the easiest commands to ever be used in the command prompt? Here it comes. The title command is very simple to use.
It takes the syntax title .

For example, i could type title format my pen drive.

All this command does is to change the title of the command prompt window in the current execution.

You might want to use this command when you have different command prompt windows open and would like to easily identify them with their titles.

The title command

When you open the command prompt window, it is given a title automatically. using this might save you time searching through all open windows to find the one you were using to change your user account information for instance.

I just love computers

At times, i am tempted to say i love computers even more than human beings because computers tend to treat us better than our fellow humans.

For instance, try booting a fellow human and you will get a dirty slap in the minimum, but boot a computer and it will gladly tell you......

Moreover, most (if not all) humans are quite stingy with the holes they have on their bodies, but a computer allows universal access to its holes, usb port, ethrenet port, (You name them). Just make sure it fits.

Unlike humans, computers very much support of many life forms. they help small ones likes bacteria and viruses to thrive. larger ones like worms find a home in computers. they don't stop there, they even house horses (Trojan horses). in this 21st century, i think they are considering adopting whales as well. glory to malware programmers. humans have tried but could only reach the worm level.

Computers have many wonderful behaviours, just exploit them.

Meet The Command Prompt - The Date Command

This is a fairly simple command to use. The date command simply displays the current date. When this command is run without arguments, It first displays the current date, then prompts for a new date to be entered. You can simply press enter to keep the current date.

When you don't want to be prompted for a new date, you can use the /t switch. This switch when used will simply display the current date

date /t        -    displays the current date
date        -    displays the current date and prompts for a new one
date 08/13/1984    -    sets the current date to the specified date

The Date Command

The date should be entered in the format mm-dd-yy (the month first, the day in the middle, then the year).

Meet the command prompt - The CD command

When working in the windows command interpreter, there is always a current working directory. This is the directory that is shown at the prompt. In the screenshot below, the current directory is D:\Windows\system32. When a command is run with no arguments, it simply displays the current directory path.

Open the command prompt and simply type cd. You will see you current working directory displayed.

The CD command takes a path argument when you want to change the working directory. For example, to change the current working directory to the windows temporary directory, you can type something like

cd %temp% or
cd D:\Users\Staphy\AppData\Local\Temp (depends on your operating system)

You may want to change the current directory if there are files in the new directory that you want to use.

There is another command quite like the CD command. This command, CHDIR, performs the same function as the cd command with only a subtle (in my opinion) difference.

Meet the command prompt - the REN command

The RENAME command can be used instead of this command - they do the same thing. What they do (as the names suggest) is to rename a file. It takes two arguments; the file to be renamed and the new name to be given to the file. It takes the form
ren file1 file2.

Here, file1 is the path to the file to be renamed. file2 is the new name to be given to the file.

After this command is executed successfully, there file specified by file1 no longer exists. If the file existed before, its name will be changed to file2.

Note however that, the file name includes the extension.

Assuming i have my curriculum vitae typed with MS Word, and saved with the name cv.docx, if i want to change the name, i will simply have to type

ren cv.docx curVit.docx.

This will change the name and keep the extension, still allowing it to be opened with the default program.

running ren cv curVit will not work since the command cannot find a file named cv.

Be careful with extensions, since changing them may give you a tough time to use your file.

Meet the command prompt - the pause command

This command is mostly used in batch scripts. What it does is simply to suspend processing/execution of the batch script until the user presses any key. It gives the prompt for the user to press any key to continue.

You may want to use this command when you want the user to see a particular output.

For example:
@echo off
echo Hello there!!
echo My name is Staphy
echo Nice meeting you.
echo I hope we'll get along very well
pause

The Pause Command

When this is put in a batch file and run, it will print out everything and wait for the user to press a key before the batch script is exited.
Were the pause not there, it will quickly print everything and exit before the user has the chance to even see what has been printed.
