Haas to Expand Energy Research and Curriculum

The Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley has named a new executive director for its Energy Institute (EI@Haas) as part of an effort to expand its energy curriculum and research. Elizabeth Bailey, a former economic consultant and award-winning MBA instructor at Arizona State University, will assume the newly created executive director position beginning this month.

Bailey will develop and coordinate the energy curriculum for MBAs and undergraduates as well as teach an energy course at Berkeley-Haas. She will also engage in applied research on energy and environmental issues to support the business and policy communities.

MIT Sloan Announces New Round for Master of Finance Program

MIT Sloan has announced a new application round for its Master of Finance (M-Fin) program beginning July 2012. This new round will have a submission deadline of March 15th.

MIT Sloan’s degree is a one-year program designed to prepare students for careers in the financial industry and the M-Fin program primarily targets recent graduates with 0 to 2 years of experience for recent graduates of post-graduate programs in math, science and engineering who wish to enter the finance profession.

As part of this new, third M-Fin application round, applications will be due on March 15th and decisions will be released by April 13th.

Yale SOM to Form New Deans Network to Focus on Globalization

Last February, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business made a plea to business schools to make globalization more central to the B-school curriculum. Yale SOM is now making the Global Network for Advanced Management.

So far, network members include Yale, INSEAD and the National University of Singapore, and other members will be formally announced at an event in April. The group will meet four to five times a year in different locations around the globe and the content of these meetings will be posted to a website that Yale will develop.

Wharton adds new MBA campus in San Francisco

The University of Pennsylvania's top-ranked Wharton School for business hopes a San Francisco campus will raise its high-tech profile and attract aspiring technology entrepreneurs.

The new site, a block from the Bay Bridge, is 37,000 square feet and more closely resembles the area's Internet startups, with high ceilings, exposed brick and the latest videoconferencing equipment.

The campus is part of Wharton's effort to attract aspiring technology entrepreneurs to its master's in business administration program for executives. Most students in the program, ranked first in 2011 by U.S. News & World Report, are in Wharton's hometown of Philadelphia. The new location can accommodate 150 students, a 50 percent increase from the old building.

East Coast business schools are increasingly looking to shore up their West Coast ties, either through satellite campuses or partnerships with other institutions. In addition the programs provide easier access to the world's biggest technology companies, including Apple, Google, Facebook, Oracle and Intel. New York's Columbia University offers an executive MBA program with the University of California, Berkeley. Northeastern University in Boston said in November that it plans to open a Seattle campus this year with programs in information technology, computer science and other fields.

Annual tuition runs $48,550, in line with the other top executive MBA programs in the country.

Kellogg to shrink 2-year, emphasize 1-year MBA program

Following a strategic review, Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management plans to shrink the size of its two-year MBA program by up to 25% and double or triple the enrollment in the school's one-year MBA program for business undergraduates. Demand for the two-year MBA is going to be slowing and that growth for one-year programs is growing.

Kellogg also will offer executive education courses in both Shanghai and San Paulo with partner schools.

The 12-month MBA program for students who already have an undergraduate business degree has increased in recent years to 85 students, from 74 in 2007. Applications also have increased for the one-year MBA to 326 last year from 250 in 2007. Over the next five years enrollment in Kellogg's one-year MBA program would grow to perhaps 250 students, while enrollment in the school's two-year program would fall to about 850 students from 1,115.

UCLA Anderson School of Business Rejects 12 Applicants for Plagiarism

UCLA’s Anderson School of Management discovered plagiarism in 12 admissions essays, after checking the essays through Turnitin in a batch of 870 applications for the current admissions cycle.

Turnitin was launched in 2009 and now is used by as many as 20 business schools. Penn State’s Smeal College of Business signed on with the service after discovering 29 cases of plagiarism in a batch of 360 essays submitted for the 2010 admissions cycle.

Booth School of Business Professors Appointed to G30

Two Booth School of Business faculty members have been appointed to the Group of Thirty (G30); Raghuram Rajan, a Chicago Booth professor of finance since 1991, and Axel Weber, a visiting professor of economics and incoming chairman of UBS, were named to the G30 on January 9th.

Rajan teaches international corporate finance and the theory of financial decisions, is also an economic advisor to the Prime Minister of India, a senior advisor to Booz and Co., BDT Capital, MCAP and a member of the international advisory board of Bank Itau-Unibanco in Brazil. He took a leave of absence from Booth from 2003 to 2006 to serve as chief economist for the International Monetary Fund.

Weber, who taught an MBA course in banking at Booth earlier this year, was previously president of the Deutsche Bundesbank and a member of the governing council of the European Central Bank. He is also a research fellow at several economic institutes including the Center for Economic Policy Research in London, the Center for Financial Studies in Frankfurt and the Center for Financial Research in Cologne.

UC Berkeley Haas Focuses on Environment, Leadership

Haas School is adding two new courses focused on the environment; Environmental Management and Policy, is a two-unit course taught by Professor David Vogel that will explore how corporations can both cause and address environmental problems and how public policy can play a role in or work against such efforts. The second, a one-unit course taught by Associate Professor Christine Rosen, is called Ethics and Decision Making in Green Product Design. It will examine the social, political, legal and business issues raised as we become increasingly aware of the impacts of industry and products on human health and the environment.

Students in both the full-time MBA and evening & weekend MBA programs can also now choose a new leadership elective course. This highly interactive course, taught by Professor Jennifer Chatman, will include a series of live cases presented by executives from organizations including Gap, AT&T, the Oakland Raiders, Abbott Labs and Walmart.com.

HBS R2 Details

According to Harvard Business School (HBS) Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid Dee Leopold, the timing of exactly when you receive an invitation to interview for the school’s second round is not an indication of the strength of your application.

Email invitations will go out on three consecutive Tuesdays, January 31st, February 7th and February 14th, Leopold said in her Director’s Blog. All candidates not invited twill also be notified o on February 14th.

Interviews for HBS’s Round 2 will be conducted between February 15th and March 9th. In addition to on the HBS campus, interviews will be conducted in London, Paris, Shanghai, Mumbai, Dubai, San Francisco, Palo Alto and New York. Skype interviews may also be an option for candidates located outside the United States who are unable to travel, Leopold added. The email containing the interview invitation will provide full details about the process.

In the first round, 750 invitations were sent out as part of the first wave of invitations, 80 as part of the second and 25 as part of the third and final wave.

GMAC Survey Reveals Impressive ROI, Narrowing Gender Wage Gap

B-school graduates recoup one-third of the money they spend to obtain their degree within one year of graduation and the full amount within four years, according to a recent survey of graduate management alumni conducted by the Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC).

The 2012 GMAC Alumni Perspectives Survey also found that an MBA or other graduate management degree can help to close the wage gap between men and women. Female graduates of full-time MBA programs reported starting salaries equivalent to 85%of the earnings their male counterparts drew, on average. Census bureau information for the U.S. population as a whole, in contrast, shows that women earn just 77% of what men earn.

Stanford Hosts Events for Minorities, Women

Stanford GSB will hold two March events targeting minority and female prospective applicants; each event will include an overview of the Stanford GSB MBA program, a class immersion experience and chances to hear from GSB students, alumni, faculty and staff. Both events are free, but space is limited, so interested prospective students are asked to complete a brief application. Registration for both events opens this week.

On March 10th, the school will host “Many Voices: Perspectives on Diversity,” an event put on by the Black Business Students Association (BBSA), the Hispanic Business Students Association (HBSA), GSB Pride (the student club for LGBT students and allies) and the Asian Society (AS). Prospective students of any background are invited to attend the event, which will highlight the perspectives of U.S. minorities.

The following day, March 11th, will bring “XX Factor: Women Changing the World,” an event sponsored by the Stanford MBA Admissions Office and the Women in Management Club.

Cornell Johnson Appoints INSEAD Professor as New Dean

Cornell University appointed INSEAD's Soumitra Dutta as its new dean, becoming the first major U.S. business school to hire a dean from a school outside the country.

Soumitra Dutta was a business and technology professor and director of the new media and technology innovation lab INSEAD. He is become Johnson’s 11th dean effective July 1, 2012. Butta also erved as a visiting professor at UC Berkeley’s Haas School, the Oxford Internet Institute at University of Oxford and Cambridge University’s Judge School.

HEC Paris #1 at 2011 Financial Times European business school

HEC Paris has kept its place at the top of the 2011 Financial Times European business school ranking. Insead, and London Business School make up second and third places.

Based on four FT rankings, published during 2011, this composite ranking includes 75 European schools. It assesses both the quality and quantity of their programs. Ranks for MBA, executive MBA and masters in management programs have been calculated where applicable, along with a rating for shorter, open-enrollment programs.

SDA Bocconi, has risen 10 places on 2010’s position, to finish joint seventh this year. Iese Business School climbed five places in the composite European table to fourth.

The 75 schools in the 2011 ranking are spread across 18 countries. France has 18 while 21 are in the UK. Germany has five schools, followed by Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain.

36% of masters in management students who enrolled this year were from outside the country in which the institution was based. This proportion was much higher for MBA programmes, (88%), while EMBA enrollments tended to be more local (26% of students were international). 34% completed an overseas internship as part of their degree, while 50% some time overseas studying at a different business school. 11% of MBA graduates from European schools took part in similar overseas exchanges.

Tepper Revamps Curriculum

The Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University, a school known for its heavy focus on teaching quantitative skills, will roll out a new curriculum next fall incorporating more training in leadership and writing.

Dean Robert Dammon is also raising funds to build a bigger building to accommodate Tepper’s growing class. Tepper hopes to expand the MBA program by as much as 50%, to 300 students, in order to take advantage of economies of scale.

Tepper is known as a quantitative powerhouse. It wants to add leadership and push core courses on disciplines like finance, marketing and operations to earlier in the first semester.

The school now offers a new orientation program called BaseCamp designed to give students an integrated view of business before they meet with recruiters.

Harvard Business School Launches i-lab

Harvard Business School (HBS) Dean Nitin Nohria joined University President Drew Faust and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino to officially launch the new Harvard Innovation Lab, or i-lab, which is intended to foster entrepreneurial activities and deepen interactions between students at the business school and the university at large with faculty, entrepreneurs and the Boston community.

Thei-lab is located on the first floor of Batten Hall at 125 Western Avenue on Harvard’s Allston campus. It features classrooms and meeting areas for both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as public areas and meeting rooms for project work.

The space will also be home to business development resources for companies, nonprofits, entrepreneurs, and other individuals in the Allston-Brighton neighborhood and Boston area and will host public lectures, panel discussions and presentations and networking events for student teams, local businesses and nonprofits.

UCLA Anderson Admissions Goes Paperless

The admissions team at the Anderson School of Management at UCLA announced this week that it has begun evaluating prospective applicants to the MBA program on its iPads, rendering the application process entirely paperless.

Anderson has seen a 20% increase in application volume this year, something the transition to an entirely digital process will help with.

The admissions committee believes that its new iPad tool will enhance both the speed and depth of its evaluations and allow team members to share insights more readily than ever regarding which candidates would be best to join the UCLA Anderson family.

IESE Expands Madrid Campus

IESE is expanding its Madrid facilities on 22,000 sq m of land it has acquired adjacent to the existing site, doubling the current 11,000 sq m occupied by the campus.

The plan will be realized in a phased development and the school has launched an architectural competition to find the best design.

The new Madrid campus will host international Executive Education programs and new executive management courses in the fields of public administration and healthcare. There will also be a new scientific and technological research laboratory.

In addition to Barcelona and Madrid, IESE has facilities in Munich and New York.

Is the Euro Crisis going to Effect Popular Euro MBAs?

Euro MBAs are increasing popular with U.S. students, particularly Esade, London Business School, Insead, and Saïd in Oxford. At Esade, Americans are second only to Spaniards on the MBA. Euro MBAs have a wider variety of students and a globally focused curriculum. But as the euro crisis continues and European governments prove increasingly reluctant to give post-degree job visas to non-Europeans, there are real concerns that these advantages will be lost.

The rise of Chinese and Indian business schools is adding to pressuresfor European schools as U.S. MBA students apply there instead. A decade ago, European schools scurried to set up programmes in China; now Chinese universities are setting up campuses overseas. Cheung Kong, has recently set up in London. Also lack of endowments is a big weakness for Euro B-schools.

Many more applicants are taking part-time MBAs because they fear losing their jobs. Debts are lower. Before the economic downturn, fewer prospective MBAs sought the part-time option. Now, part-time and executive MBA programs are very popular. While applications to full-time MBA programs are down at two-thirds of the 199 schools responding to a survey this summer by the Graduate Management Admission Council, more than 40% percent of part-time and executive programs have seen an increase.

Part-time programs generally target students with about five years of work experience. EMBAs seek more experienced people, with at least eight years in management. EMBA courses tend to take place on alternating weekends. Part-time degrees can take three to six years, vs. two for most full-time and EMBA programs.

A decade ago, when employers were covering much of the part-time and EMBA tuition expenses, it would have been taboo for a student to request access to an MBA career office. Those who did sometimes needed a waiver signed by their employer. Today, nearly every program offers students career assistance in some form. For many, that means workshops and speakers focused on advancement with topics such as networking and résumé writing.

Many part-timers are now either a job changers or career switchers. Only 19% of respondents to this year’s EMBA survey were completely funded by their employers, down from 32% in 2007. And 42% paid their entire tuition on their own, vs. 28% four years ago.
Columbia Business School, the second-ranked EMBA, leadership offerings have been enhanced with electives such as “Thinking Globally” and “Organizational Culture Demystified.”

Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management (No. 3 on the EMBA list) has added a course called “Leading High Impact Teams” to its EMBA this year and began offering three EMBA leadership workshops.

Entrepreneurship is also finding its way into EMBA curriculums. At Booth, a concentration in the area was added to the EMBA program this year, and 10% of students have already signed up.

Booth Beats Kellogg in Businessweek's EMBA list

The University of Chicago's executive MBA program is the best in the world, says Bloomberg Businessweek, knocking Northwestern University's program out of the No. 1 spot for the first time in the list's history.

The Kellogg School of Management had held top EMBA honors since the ranking began in 1991. This year it falls to third place in the publication's ranking, due in part to lower marks for student satisfaction, according to a survey of new graduates.

Graduates of all executive programs saw their salaries increase an average of $40,000, Businessweek reports. But Booth School of Business grads enjoyed salary boosts of almost $50,000 on average.

Oxford seeks to widen MBA appeal

Oxford Said was founded 15 years ago and was hated by more traditional dons. Now Said is a big money earner for Oxford and programs are mushrooming. Soon the university will have a “1+1” program, which will enable students to study an Oxford specialist master's degree and an MBA in two years.

The scheme employs both an interdisciplinary approach to business and a flexible approach to study: “depth plus breadth” which means a master's degree in a specialist subject, such as environmental management or education, and the breadth of a business degree.

Harvard Business School runs a 2+2 scheme, a deferred entry program in which HBS guarantees entry to the MBA for young graduates on completion of appropriate work experience. The model has been copied by other schools, including the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad.

In U.S. courses, students can choose from more than 100 electives, but they can't really specialize in depth. The total cost of studying on the 1+1 program at Oxford will be between $114,500 and $134,000, depending on the degree. That is up to $50,000 less than the cost of a two-year MBA at Harvard or Wharton.

There are 230 taught postgraduate programs at Oxford, most of which are a year long and many could be potential partners in the scheme. Four departments are participating in the first phase: geography and the environment; education; computer science; and the Oxford Internet Institute.

Many B-Schools are re-evaluating their relationships with other departments. Stanford and the University of Michigan’s Ross school for example. At Stanford one in six MBA students is studying a double degree program with another school. At Ross 37% of MBA students are on joint degrees.

Many leading schools are looking to add varieties to the tradition 2-year program. At Kellogg, 85 of the 629 students are on an accelerated one-year degree.

Stanford Tops Harvard in 2012 Best Business Schools Rankings

The Stanford University Graduate School of Business beat Harvard Business School for the top spot in U.S. News's 2012 rankings of Best Business Schools. Stanford had tied with Harvard for the lead spot for the past three years, but was able to claim sole possession this year as Harvard's overall score slipped to 98 from the 100 that had become commonplace for the Cambridge, Mass. institution.

Esteemed programs like the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, which has the third-ranked international program this year and is tied for third in the overall rankings, and the Yale University School of Management, tied for 10th overall, have made huge changes to better prepare students to approach their careers with an international mindset. The Thunderbird School of Global Management is this year's top-ranked international MBA program, followed by the University of South Carolina Moore School of Business.

The University of California—Davis Graduate School of Management leapt 14 spots from a tie at 42nd to a tie at 28th; the Vanderbilt University Owen Graduate School of Management jumped from a tie at 36th to a tie at 28th; and the Rice University Jones Graduate School of Business climbed from a tie at 39th last year to a tie at 34th in the 2012 rankings.

$150 Million Gift To Stanford For Social Enterpris

Donors Robert, Stanford MBA '60, and Dorothy King have given $150 million to promote entrepreneurship will drive economic growth to help alleviate poverty in developing economies by founding the Stanford Institute for Innovation in Developing Economies

Stanford is developing an “on-the-ground” initiative to help social entrepreneurs develop organizations that make products and services to help the poor. The institute will teach and support students to create organizations similar to one launched by Daniel Spitzer, a Stanford MBA, who started a venture that grows hazelnut trees in Bhutan. The for-profit company, Mountain Hazelnut Venture Ltd., hopes to produce some 40,000 tons of hazelnuts, giving local farmers a lucrative export product and restoring trees to mountainsides stripped by logging.

The gift is the biggest since David Booth gave $300 million in 2008 to what is now known as University of Chicago Booth School of Business. In 2006, Stanford’s business school received a $105 million gift from Nike Inc. cofounder Philip Knight to help construct its new campus which formally opened earlier this year.

The gift could establish Stanford as the world’s leading business school for social enterprise. For years, U.S. News’ rankings of the best business schools for non-profits have put Yale University’s School of Management first and Stanford second.
