It's an unfortunate fact of life that people will say inappropriate things if they can hide behind a curtain of anonymity. Nowhere is this more evident than on the Internet, and particularly on websites that allow for open commenting. Here are a few ways to deal with inappropriate comments on your blog.

Have a policy. Before you can deal with inappropriate comments, it is necessary to define exactly what constitutes inappropriate commenting. Set up some clear guidelines and post them in an easily accessible location on your website. Common guidelines include no spam, no pornography, no profanity and no personal attacks, but ultimately you are the judge of what is considered inappropriate on your website. Of course, it's also important to update that policy as needed.

Stick to the policy. Once you have established a clear set of guidelines, it's important to adhere to it under all circumstances. Do not delete or otherwise censor appropriate comments that happen to disagree with you; likewise, do not let inappropriate language slide in comments that happen to agree with your ideas. If you follow your own rules fairly and impartially, your readers will notice.

Do not respond to inappropriate comments. A common saying on the Internet is "Don't feed the trolls." Most of the time, people who comment with inappropriate language or inflammatory remarks do so deliberately; they want attention. Giving attention to those comments just encourages them to post more.

Google just recently launched the Google Blog Search Pinging Service, which allows individual bloggers to inform Google of their content changes. This new service enables for faster inclusion in Google Blog Search.

The Google Blog Search Pinging Service API allows users who frequently update their blog to programmatically inform Google Blog Search about changes to their blogs. Blogging provider admins can also use this API to notify Google of changes to blogs on their platform(s). To set up automated pinging of Google Blog Search, create either an XML-RPC Client or a REST Client which sends requests as noted below. It doesn't matter which method you choose for notification; both are handled in the same way. We all know that search engines love fresh content; that's why many of us have started blogs and encourage our clients to have blogs on their web sites. Now Google has made it easier to let it know when you've added fresh content to your blog. It's called the Google Blog Search Pinging Service, and there are a lot of good reasons to use it.

Google Blog Search Adds Ping Service

Google has added a pinging service to its Blog Search offering. Dubbed Google Blog Search Pinging Service, now bloggers and blog providers can now instantly inform Google Blog Search of new posts and content changes. Besides its own new Pinging Service, Google Blog Search uses other ping services to update its index as to when blogs are updated. Sure, manual pinging is very 2003/2004 as most blog software pings automatically, but by using the Google Blog Search Pinging Service, bloggers will no longer have to wait for Google to crawl their blogs in order for new posts to show up in the Google Blog Search index. By doing so, blogs get updated faster in Google Blog Search and Google can consolidate its blog crawling more efficiently. Blogs can be manually submitted to the Google Pinging Service and most blog providers should soon start pinging Google automatically.

Good reason to use it

*For one thing, it's not just for Google. To quote from the FAQ, "These updates are then published and shared with other search engines to allow them to discover the changes to your weblogs."

*It's also a great way to add your blog to the list of blogs that Google Blog Search crawls and indexes. Incidentally, if you run a blogging service, you might want to provide this service to your blog writers.

*In the FAQ, Google gives a URL to let you manually ping the service. It's a one-time notification, however, so you'll need to resubmit every time your blog content is updated. You might find it much easier to use the API (also included in the FAQ) to automatically inform Google of every update to your blog.

*Be patient when checking Google Blog Search for your blog updates though; the process is automated, but a number of factors can delay your blog's inclusion.

*If you're really impatient, Google does publish the last five minutes of ping activity for its Blog Search as an XML file.

*Should you use the pinging service if you already use Google Sitemaps? Google is a little unclear on this point. If you're a blogging service provider, it's a good idea.

A recent report finds that 62% of Internet users don't know what a "blog" is.

Last year, the Oxford Dictionary of English added the word "blog" to its selection of new words. Unlike the similar addition of the Internet meaning of "dot" a few years back, I suspect most people replied to "blog" with "Huh?" A recent report supports my suspicion in its findings that 62% of Internet users don't know what a "blog" is.

Plain and simple, a blog is essentially a journal posted to the Internet for anyone to read. What started out as a way for individuals to share their diaries with the world is fast becoming the talk of the Web.

First, let me help you understand the name. Say "Web", like the World Wide Web, then "log", like a daily captain's log. Now, say the two words faster. Sounds like "weh-blog", right? That's the short history of the name.

A blog has grown to essentially cover commentary, opinion or observations posted to a Web site on a regular basis. It's a pulpit from which anyone can share their views with the world. Bloggers (the people that write blogs) include a number of traditional columnists, analysts and pundits. In their cases, blogs let them extend their expertise and audience beyond the confines of the printed, broadcast or packaged publication.

Blogs are also ordinary folks who feel they have a voice. And, it's these new voices that seem to hold the most promise. Professionals who never had a channel to the public, self-decreed or de facto experts on a topic, creative types working the art of the blog and a few blowhards who just think they need to be heard are all blogging.

Blogs may be reshaping our use of the Internet, the distribution of news and the proliferation of opinion. Dan Gillmor recently left his ten-year post as a columnist for the San Jose Mercury News, the newspaper at the center of Silicon Valley. Gillmor struck out on his own to fuel the fire of "distributed" journalism, his terms for the effect of blogs on traditional reporting. "I think of distributed journalism as somewhat analogous to any project or problem that can be broken into little pieces," Gillmor states on his blog at http://dangillmor.typepad.com, "where lots of people can work in parallel on small parts of a bigger question and collectively - and relatively quickly - bring to bear lots of individual knowledge and/or energy to the matter. The important thing is the parallel activity by a large number of people."

Gillmor is apparently on to something. The Pew Internet and American Life Project recently found that blog use increased 58% last year. At the time of the study late in 2004, just 27% of Internet users were following blogs. But blogs represent a huge growth area within the Net.

Some of this popularity is attributed to the recent presidential election and politics in general. Bloggers covered every facet of the political process, including the media coverage. And since blogging is about more than just reporting the news, they have become part of the political process.

Gillmor cites a recent example centered on the DeLay Rule in the U.S. House of Representatives. Gillmor credits two political blogs with helping force House Republicans to reverse direction on a vote. The blogs "asked readers to call their Republican members of Congress and ask how they voted on the original secret vote to give DeLay a break" after being indicted.

Blogs are tied to Web sites, so searching for a blog of interest is similar to finding a Web site. Finding a quality blog may be harder. Try these tips:

* Look at your favorite Web sites for links to blogs.

* Search for a topic in your favorite search engine, following your search term with the word "blog" (i.e., association management software blog)

* Look to sites like Bloglines, Feedster and others that house blogs for writers. Some of these sites list blogs by category, making it easy to find blogs that fit your interests.
