My
eyes opened. I was startled to see that I was sitting on a beach.
The waves were rolling in and out. It was completely deserted. Not
a person in sight until I got up and turned around to see a man
standing on a rock in the distance.

Who
was he? I couldn't see him very clearly, so I walked nearer and then
I knew who it was. It was the character named Eric from True
Blood.
I was shocked that this had worked. I was really here. It felt
real.

I
moved nearer to the rock and hoped he would talk to me first, but he
didn't move. The nearer I got, I could see his face clearly and
decided to talk to him.

“Hello
Eric. Do you know who I am?” I asked. It was a silly question,
because he might not be programmed to know who I was at all. I
didn't know why I had asked that, but he just kept on staring at me.
I wasn't sure if he was going to say anything, but I wanted him to
look at me and acknowledge me.

Suddenly,
I realized how odd this was. The whole thing felt real, but nothing
about it was scary. I moved closer to Eric until I was close enough
to put my hand and touch him. I stretched my arm out and then
everything went black.

I
woke up in the chair and looked at Darrell.

“Are
you okay Lucy? How did it feel?”

“Oh
very odd doctor, but interesting.”

“Did
you talk to the character?”

“Yes,
but he didn't answer me and I was about to touch his hand, but then I
came back here. The experience was very real though. It was vivid
and exciting. I'd love to experiment some more with it. I wanted
more time there.”

“I
couldn't let you stay there for too long the first time round. Your
brain must get used to the chair slowly, so it is best that you do
this for a few minutes each day until your mind becomes accustomed to
the chair.” Darrell smiled for a moment and continued to talk some
more.

“I
am glad you found it interesting Lucy. Now I can tell you more about
the chair and what I hope to succeed with it.”

I
felt excited at the prospect of learning more about Darrell's new
project and what it would be used for in the future. I felt proud
that I had found this job. I knew I was going to enjoy it immensely.
This was going to be an interesting project.

To be continued................................

The Flat Iron building in New York

I walked into the lab and waited for Darrell to tell me what he wanted me to start working on. I had been looking forward to this day for a while and now it was finally here. I wanted to enjoy every minute of it.

Darrell guided me to a room that was locked and had to be opened by entering a code and a hand print. This meant I would not be able to get in myself until I had gotten authorization clearance from personnel.

"Miss Bridges..."

"Oh, please call me Lucy doctor."

"Very well. Then you must call me Darrell. Now this room is very important to me. Something very special is in here and it must be protected at all times. Do you understand Lucy?"

He was very serious when he spoke and he looked directly into my eyes with a stern expression. I knew then he had been working on something very important in this room and I was about to enter. I realized he wanted me to work with him on this project. Doctor Simmons always had many different types of projects going on at the same time from what I had heard. I had learned this about him when I had tried a few months ago to contact him.

"Yes I understand very clearly Darrell."

I wanted to see what was in this room now, as he began to lead me into. What could be in there? I knew he had worked on various scientific projects in the past. Some of them were for the army and the government, but they were top secret and I did not have a clue what they were. I had heard that he was fascinated with the mind more than anything and I had heard through various pipelines that he had discovered something unique about the mind. Perhaps, I was about to find out what that was today. I smiled to myself, hoping he would show me and that it would be in this room.

We guided me inside slowly. At first, I could not see anything, but then I saw a huge chair made of leather with computerized buttons on each of its armrests. I didn't have a clue what it could be. It strangely, scientific in some way. I couldn't take my eyes off it.

"Lucy this is my new creation. It is something quite unique in itself. You will understand more when you see how it works. So the first thing for you to start with on your first day of working with me is not to write facts down or talk this through, but to actually experience my new project called 'The Chair.'"

"I see. So, you want me to sit on it or something?"

"Yes my dear. Quite simply that if you don't mind."

"But what does it do doctor?"

"Ah... well okay, I will tell you a little about what it will do before you sit in it. It is supposed to transport your mind to a place or to somebody that the memory cannot recall in every day life. The chair will do everything when you set it with instructions by using these keys here on the armrests. Do you understand now?"

I was excited, so I was willingly to give this a go.

"Yes. I understand completely. This chair will take me somewhere using my mind. Correct?"

"Yes. Correct dear. Now come on tell me something you wish to recall that you cannot remember and I will instruct the chair to do that whilst you sit in it. Is there a time in your childhood maybe that you did not understand something or perhaps someone you wish to meet that you had never met before?"

"Never met before? It can do that? That sounds exciting doctor. Can I meet a famous person?"

"Yes Lucy you can. Who do you want to meet?"

"How about putting me on a beach where I meet a vampire or a wizard of some kind. Can you do that? I would love to meet a vampire from a book or television series."

"I can try to do that Lucy. Tell me the name of the vampire or book."

"Okay. I want to meet Eric, the character from the television series called "True Blood." Can you do that? What will happen if I see him? Will it be an illusion for me or will it be like a dream?"

"Let's not go into that too much until you try it Lucy. I cannot go into all the details. You must experience it for yourself to learn more and then you have to tell me what happened. You will have to tell me how you felt too."

"Why? What will happen?"

"Trust me. Try it then we will talk more about it. Now please sit on the chair. "

I sat on the chair like he wanted me to and I lay back as it glided downwards. My arms were locked into clamps and my legs too. Suddenly, I was scared and did not know what to think of Doctor Darrell Simmons' new creation. Would it hurt me? Was it dangerous? All these questions went through my mind as I lay there.

"Now, tell me who this character is and the details of the television series."

I told him to look up the series on the internet, so he could read about it.

"Right Lucy, all you have to do when you close your eyes is think of the character's face and let your mind picture him. The chair will do everything else. Have fun."

I didn't know if I was going to have fun or be absolutely terrified, but I had a feeling it would work out just fine as all this was surely not going to be real. I closed my eyes and tried to relax, as I felt something zap my skull sending me into a vision of darkness.

start my new and exciting job today. I was going to be an assistant to the famous Doctor Darrell Simmons who had invented many scientific creations for the government. Now he worked for this company that researched science in ways I hoped that I would one day understand.

The building was tall and very elaborate in its design. The tower must be at least 60 floors I thought. I wondered which floor I would be working on.

I walked inside and told someone at the desk that it was my first day here and that I had to report to the 20th floor. The guy at the desk gave me a temporary visitor badge and told me to check-in with security before going up to the 20th floor. I was feeling nervous. I had wanted this job for so long and now I was finally here all the way from the United Kingdom to New York city.

Once I was on the 20th floor, I walked out of the lift and through some glass doors where I found a receptionist sitting behind a desk.

“Hello. My name is Lucy Bridges and it’s my first day here for work. Do you know where I should be?” I said nervously.
“Have you got a name of someone who you should report to?” The receptionist looked up and waited.
“Of course. Doctor Darrel Simmons. He is the Science Technician and I’m his new assistant.”
The receptionist picked up her telephone and dialed a number.
“Hello, is that Doctor Simmons? I have Lucy Bridges here.” The receptionist then put down the telephone and said, “Doctor Simmons is on his way to meet you. Just take a seat over there. He shouldn’t be too long.”
“Thank you.” I walked over to the couches and sat waiting patiently for Doctor Darrel Simmons to arrive.

I looked around at the plush settings of the reception area. The walls were white whilst the reception desk was made of glass. I noticed how fancy everything was and there was a rich smell in the air that oozed of power and money.

A man approached me. He wore glasses and had scruffy, curly dark hair that somehow suited him. He was wearing a white coat like a doctor does. He was short, skinny and eccentric in his mannerisms. As he came closer he smiled at me and put out his hand for me to shake.

"Hello Miss Bridges. I am Doctor Darrell Simmons." I shook his hand and stood up quickly.

"Hello Sir. Pleased to meet you at last." I had heard so much about him and was in awe of his work. Finally, excitement took over my nervousness, as we walked to his labs.

Doctor Darrell Simmons was short with seedy eyes. He walked with a shuffle as he held his walking stick. We entered the lift and he pressed the button for the 40th floor. I hadn't realized we were going up so high. The lift doors opened and I followed him to his labs. I was excited that I was finally here to learn about his work.

To be continued.............. watch this space............

The Chair - A Fiction Novel by Dee Larkin

'The Chair' is a new novel that I am writing at present. I want to share this fiction story with everyone in the hopes that it will get published one day. It is a thrilling mystery romance with science fiction.

The story is about a chair that has been invented by a scientist who believes he can transport peoples' minds to a different place and a fantasy of their choice whilst they sit in it. When Lucy Bridges starts her new job with the eccentric scientist, Darrel Simmons, she becomes intrigued with his work and the chair. What she does not know is what she is getting herself into by trying the chair out. Her experience of sitting in the chair gives her an idea. When she meets a man on the train she does not get the chance to ask his name. She was drawn to his handsome face that she cannot now forget. So, she uses the image she has of him in her mind's eye, because she wants to see him again to find out who he is. Of course, what she does not know is that she is on the brink of disaster!

Now read Chapter One .......................
