4. Acne conglobata:

Acne conglobata is a serious case where multiple forms of acne combined and spread in large areas. This condition affects man more commonly.

There are people who thought that different types of acne require different types of treatment. However, no matter what type of acne you have, the causes of it are all similar. Acne happens due to build up of toxins in your body, oily skin, hormonal imbalance and presence of excess dead skin cells that can clogged up pores. Home Remedies for Acne:

1. Apply fresh lime juice mixed to a glass of boiled milk as a face wash for pimples, blackheads, and cracked skin.

2. Mix lime juice and rose water in equal portions. Apply on affected area. Wash it off after 20-30 minutes with lukewarm water.

3. Apply ripe tomato or cucumber pulp on acne pimples and keep upto 1 hour, then wash.

4. Apply a mixture of 1 teaspoon lemon juice and 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder. Note that this remedy is not for sensitive skin.

5. Make a paste of roasted & powdered pomgranate skin with fresh lime juice and apply over boils,acne, pimple, blackheads and whiteheads.

6. Apply grated potatoes as poultice to treat skin blemishes, wrinkles, boils, pimples, blackheads, whiteheads , etc.

7. Make a paste of sandalwood with rose water. Apply on affected area. Wash it off after 20-30 minutes with lukewarm water.

8. Make a paste of ground radish seeds with water and apply on face to remove blackheads.

9. Apply a paste of ground seasame seeds with water as poultice for inflammation of the skin due to allergies, skin rashes, and pimples - acne.

10. Apply a paste of fresh fenugreek - methi leaves over the face every night and wash with warm water in the morning for preventing pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, dryness, and wrinkles.

11. Make a paste of ground orange peel with water and apply on the affected area. Wash it off after 20-30 minutes with lukewarm water.

Major Diet for Acne:

A diet based on whole, unprocessed foods may benefit people with acne. Try to eat at least five servings of vegetables per day and at least one serving of fruit per day. Avoid eating refined sugar. Fried foods and trans fats such as milk, milk products, margarine, shortening, and other hydrogenated vegetable oils should be eliminated. Foods containing healthy omega-3 oils such as ground flaxseeds and sardines should be increased. Some people find that chocolate, caffeine, carbonated beverages, iodized salt, shellfish, wheat and/or milk products aggravate acne.

Regular bowel movements are important. Drink at least 8 glasses of day of water. Increase fiber intake. In addition to eating fresh vegetables and fruit, choose whole grains. Some people may benefit from a one- to four-week liver detox diet based on fresh vegetables and fruit.

Are you becoming concerned about that persistent reddening on your face? Are you beginning to notice unusual pimple outbreaks and thin red lines on your face, too? If you do, chances are you are experiencing a skin condition commonly referred to as rosacea.

What is Rosacea? Rosacea is one of the most common inflammatory conditions of the skin of the face. Once it afflicts you, your face will take on a characteristic redness that looks like a permanent flush or blush. Soon after, pimples and thin red lines will likewise develop. This condition is sometimes referred to as acne rosacea but this can be terribly misleading since acne and rosacea are two different conditions.

Rosacea affects both the males and the females and usually begins after the age 30. The condition is aggravated by several lifestyle and environmental factors such as eating hot, spicy foods, drinking alcohol and/or caffeine, exposure to the sun, rain, or wind, temperature changes and stress. Some medications such as ACE inhibitors are also linked with the development of the disease.

However, it is important to remember that the triggers do not affect all people in the same way. What affects some may not affect the others. So, to identify what factors are actually causing your symptoms to appear, you may need to keep a diary for a few weeks. Jot down everything you have eaten or drank during the day, your emotional state and the weather. This will help you identify what factors trigger your rosacea flare-ups the most.

Symptoms of Rosacea Disease:-

o Erythema, or flushing of the face or neck

This happens when the blood vessels on the face and the neck expand to accommodate the increased volume of blood flow. The redness will disappear during the initial stages but will eventually become permanent as the disease progresses.

o Telangiectasia, or the formations of red lines on the face

The red lines you see on your face are actually the enlarged blood vessels underneath the skin. Unfortunately, they become more prominent as the redness fades.

o Formation of papules or the pimples

The pimples of rosacea are commonly characterized as small lumpy red pimples. Some of these pimples may contain pus and may appear as small white bumps. In rosacea, no whiteheads or blackheads are present.

o Burning or itching of the skin

o Edema or swelling of the face

o Rhinophyma or the enlargement of the nose

This condition usually accompanies rosacea and is most common among older men.

o Ocular rosacea

Most people afflicted with rosacea also develop mild to severe eye-related problems. Inflamed, dry and crusty eyelids and conjunctivitis characterize ocular rosacea. If left untreated, ocular rosacea can give rise to more serious problems, which includes irisitis or the painful inflammation of the iris and keratitis or the ulceration of the cornea.

Causes Rosacea Of Disease:-

What Causes Rosacea? Nobody knows for sure. For all we know, there may be a number of factors that lead to this condition. However, it was observed that some people are more prone to developing the disease and that it seems to run in the family.

So, what do you need to do once you suspect that you are afflicted with rosacea?

First, go see your doctor. He or she is in the best position to make the correct diagnosis and give you the most appropriate treatment. Do not take this matter lightly. Early diagnosis and treatment are necessary to ward off other problems associated with the disease.

Second, make the necessary lifestyle changes. Avoid the triggers as much as you can.

Third, protect your skin. Use moisturizers to soothe your skin when it feels dry or sore. Don't forget to put on your sunblock and use a scarf to protect your face when it is cold or windy outside. Do not use skin care products that contain harsh ingredients and do not rub or scrub your face!

And lastly, keep your cool. Stress aggravates rosacea and may lead to a nasty flare up. So, if you are feeling stressed out, take a time out to cool down. You can use slow, deep breathing techniques to keep your emotions under control.

Although no accurate data is present regarding the prevalence of rosacea, a great body of evidence suggests that approximately 10% of fair skinned Americans are susceptible to acquire rosacea. The presentation of rosacea varies markedly. Although the diagnosis is often straight forward, sometimes the presentation is not clear and diagnosis consumes much effort and time. A deep understanding of the different clinical types of rosacea is pivotal to guide early detection and treatment of this common skin disorder.
The following is an outline of the different types of rosacea:

1- Erythemato-telangiectatic rosacea:-

The most common manifestation of this type of rosacea is central flushing of the face which is often associated with an irritating stinging and/or burning sensation. The redness often spares the area of the skin surrounding the eyes. Inflammation of the red areas of the face leads to roughness of the skin with the appearance of scales. Patients' symptoms are often triggered by stress, spicy foods, alcohol, exercise, hot baths, hot drinks and hot or cold weather. Patients with erythemato-telangiectatic rosacea often suffer from severe burning or stinging sensation when using topical preparations on their face lesions. This type of rosacea is sometimes associated with pathological weakness of the blood vessels of the face; a condition which is known as telangiectasia. Telengiectasia has been treated lately with laser successfully in many situations.

2- Papulopustular rosacea:-

It is the most common type of rosacea presentation. It commonly affects females who present with redness of the central portion of the face which contains crusty lesions. Patients with this type of rosacea are usually very sensitive to direct exposure to sun light.

3- Phymatous rosacea:-

This type of rosacea is marked by areas of skin thickenings which are associated with irregular skin nodules of the forehead, chin, nose the ears and/or the eyes. This type of rosacea is mainly treated with isotretinoin and surgical corrective procedures.

4- Ocular rosacea:
Occasionally, rosacea may affect the eyes years before the classic skin manifestations supervene. Ocular rosacea leads to inflammation of the eye lids and/or the conjunctiva. Patients often complain of burning and/or stinging of the eyes. Dryness of the eyes is often irritating to most patients with rosacea. All patients with rosacea should be screened for ocular rosacea, because similarly to phymatous rosacea, ocular rosacea has distinctive lines of treatment.

History Of Psoriasis:

Likely one of the longest known illnesses of humans is Psoriasis. Psoriasis became the ugliest disease for each human that they experience. Either you are king, members of the royal family, a statesman, an entrepreneur or such an ordinary individual you are not safe in psoriasis. Plenck does not compared the Psoriasis from other skin diseases discovered till Robert Willan ( 1757-1812 ), an english dermatological doctor along with Thomas Bateman recognized this disease as an independent. They divided it into 2 classes : ( 1 ) Leprosa Graecorum, as the condition when the skin had scales ; and ( 2 ) Psora Leprosa, as the condition when it became eruptive.

In 1841, Ferdinand von Hebra ( Viennese skin specialist ) as he was working with Willan's notes, he ascribed the name psoriasis from the Greek word psora or to scratch in the English compendium, he's also the one who described the clinical image of psoriasis that our dermatological doctor are using today.

Erythrodermic psoriasis-:

This type of the skin disease can cause protein and fluid loss that can lead to severe illness. Since the skin loses its protective functions this can be life threatening.

An abnormal mass of tissue in which cells grow and multiply, seemingly unchecked by the mechanisms that control normal cells. They are classifieds into two main groups:

" Primary

" Metastatic

Primary brain tumors are those which are developed from the tissues of the brain, or begins in brain tissue. The most common type of brain tumor is gliomas. There are many types of gliomas too:

" Astrocytoma

" Brain stem glioma

" Ependymoma

" Oligodendroglioma

Metastatic brain tumors are those which arise anywhere in the body (like legs etc) and migrate through bloodstream.

1- MAJOR BRAIN DISEASES Ependymoma:

Ependymomas are tumors that originate from the ependyma. Ependymomas are an uncommon character of glioma. They produce from the ependymal cells which line the ventricles and from the key canal of the spinal cord. People of all ages can develop ependymomas, including children. Ependymomas can be found in any part of the brain or spine, and are particularly common in the cerebellum in children. They are the second most common spinal cord tumour. Microscopically, ependymomas can appear different, called either standard or anaplastic ependymoma. These two types are treated the same and have approximately the same prognosis. A third type, which occurs at the base of the spine, called myxopapillary cauda equina ependymoma, tends to be much less malignant than any of the other forms.

Ependymomas of the backbone story for over half of all grownup spinal tumours. A fourth character, called ependymoblastoma, is a more competitive kind of this tumor and more hard to handle. Its diagnosis and administration are related to that of crude neuroectodermal tumor and is discussed in the part on crude neuroectodermal tumor. Ependymomas may occasionally spread from the brain to the spinal cord in the cerebrospinal fluid. Cerebrospinal fluid is the fluid that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord. An ependymoma in the cerebellum may lead to problems with coordination and balance. Ependymoma of the brain treated with complete resection and radiation to the tumor area can result in an approximately 50 percent cure rate. Spinal cord ependymomas are often easier to treat, and have an excellent prognosis.

Ependymomas are frequently sluggish growing tumours and any signs and symptoms normally produce slowly over many months. People of all ages can produce ependymomas, including children. Tumors at the base of the brain, in an area called the posterior fossa, are more common in children. The main symptoms occur due to increased pressure within the skull. This may be caused by a blockage in the ventricles of the brain that leads to a build-up of cerebral spinal fluid. Specific symptoms of ependymomas include swelling of the nerve at the back of the eye, rapid, jerky eye movements, neck pain and irritability. Ependymomas can grow in different parts of the brain, and symptoms may relate to the area of the brain that is affected. The symptoms of an ependymoma in the spinal cord will depend on which part of the spine is affected. Symptoms include neck or back pain, and sometimes numbness or weakness in the limbs and loss of bladder control.

The handling for an ependymoma depends on an amount of things, including your general health, the size and stance of the tumour, and whether it has scatter to new parts of the mind or spinal cord. If the pressure in the skull is raised, it is important to reduce it before any treatment is given for brain tumours. Steroid drugs may be given to reduce swelling around the tumour. This means that many may be genetically inclined to developing this condition. However, as far as the genetic link and tumor progression, there is no one specific cause. In addition to these theories pertaining to the causes associated with this type of tumor, it has been established that those that have the condition identified as neurofibromatosis may develop this tumor. 3-MAJOR BRAIN DISEASES Oligodendroglioma:

The oligodendroglioma is a rare tumor that develops in the brain. It is created by the cells that are located in the connective tissue that surround the nerve cells of the brain. The symptoms that the patient experiences are heavily dependent upon the location of the tumor itself.

While more common among the adult population, these cells have been found in children as well. The oligodendroglioma tumor is considered to be one that grows at an extremely slow rate. In the United States population, this type of tumor accounts for approximately 3% of all tumor diagnoses. It has been established that males are more prone to this type of condition than females.

Major Symptoms of the Oligodendroglioma Tumor:

Individuals that experience the oligodendroglioma tumor may endure a multitude of symptoms. The symptoms that are experienced are heavily dependent upon the exact location and general size of the tumor. In most instances, the following symptoms are identified in patients suffering from this condition:

• Many individuals will start to experience headaches. In most cases, as the tumor progresses in size, the headaches will progress in severity.

Astrocytomas are the most common glioma, accounting for about half of all primary brain and spinal cord tumors. The remainder of astrocytomas are unclassified unique variants. Futhermore, some tumors may show histologic similarities to multiple glia, e.g. oligoastrocytomas. The existence of such tumors brings debate as to the proper origin of gliomas: possibly cancer stem cells, not the glia themselves. For patients with anaplastic astrocytomas, the growth rate and interval between onset of symptoms and diagnosis is intermediate between low-grade astrocytomas and glioblastomas. There are different types of astrocytomas, and these lesions are classified into several categories according to their appearance under a microscope. This classification is important because, the appearance of an astrocytoma will often predict its behavior and, therefore, a patient's prognosis.

MAJOR Symptoms Of Astrocytoma Diseases:

Astrocytomas are the most common variety of glioma and may be benign or malignant.

The first symptoms of astrocytoma, or any brain tumor, can be caused by increased pressure in the brain as the tumor grows. Like all brain tumors, astrocytomas are very serious and are usually described by the medical community based upon their grade. People of all ages can develop astrocytomas, but they are more common in adults, particularly middle-aged men. Astrocytomas in the base of the brain are more common in children or young people. In young children, the growing pressure of an astrocytoma tumor inside the skull may enlarge the head. Changes (such as swelling) may be observed in the back of the eye, where the blind spot is. Usually there are no changes in temperature, blood pressure, pulse or respiratory rates except just before death.

General symptoms of an astrocytoma tumor are an outcome of growing force inside the skull. These symptoms include worry, vomiting and psychological position changes. Regional effects of astrocytomas include compression, intrusion, and devastation of mind parenchyma. Arterial and venous hypoxia, competition for nutrients, release of metabolic end products, and release and recruitment of cellular mediators disrupt normal parenchymal function. Generally, maintenance of patients with mind tumors is primarily directed by a neurologist or specialist in neurooncology. Patients with an astrocytoma and a story of seizures should obtain anticonvulsant therapy with monitoring of the drug density in the blood flow. The brain stem connects the brain to the spinal cord. It is the lowest portion of the brain, above the back of the neck. The brain stem controls many of the body's basic functions, such as motor and sensory activity, coordination and walking, and heart and respiratory functions. It has three parts:

The midbrain, which develops from the middle of the brain
The medulla oblongata, which connects to the spinal cord
The pons, which is located between the medulla oblongata and the midbrain

Most brain stem tumors develop in the pons. A glioma is a tumor that grows from a glial cell, which is a supportive cell in the brain.

Brain stem glioma is most often diffused (spread freely) through the brain stem by the time of diagnosis. This type of tumor is very aggressive. A small percentage of brain stem tumors are very localized or focal tumors. Focal tumors often are low-grade (the cells look close to normal) tumors, and behave in a more benign (less aggressive) fashion.

Brain stem glioma tends to occur in children between five and 10 years old. Most tumors grow in a part of the brain stem that can be difficult to perform surgery in, making brain stem glioma challenging to treat.

Children with brain stem glioma often experience the following symptoms. Sometimes, children with brain stem glioma do not show any of these symptoms. ::Stroke::

A stroke, previously known medically as a cerebrovascular accident (CVA), is the rapidly developing loss of brain function(s) due to disturbance in the blood supply to the brain. This can be due to ischemia (lack of blood flow) caused by blockage (thrombosis, arterial embolism), or a hemorrhage (leakage of blood). As a result, the affected area of the brain is unable to function, leading to inability to move one or more limbs on one side of the body, inability to understand or formulate speech, or an inability to see one side of the visual field.

Besides cancer and heart diseases, stroke is the third leading cause of death. Approximate 1/4 of all stroke victims die as a direct result of the stroke or it's complications. Stroke is caused by uncontrolled diet that is high in saturated and trans fats resulting in cholesterol build up in the arteries and high blood pressure. In other words, if cholesterol building up in the arteries is blocking the circulation of blood in any part of the body causing oxygen not to be delivered to the brain, resulting in some cells in the brain to die off and are unable reproduce, then we have stroke. Other strokes happen when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures causing the cells in your brain to be deprived of oxygen in your blood, they die and never come back.

1-Major Causes of stroke::

There are similar causes of stroke and heart diseases, but in stroke the result is more severe. Any delay of rescuing will result in death of the victim. Here are some causes of stroke:

1. Unhealthy diet:

A diet high in saturated and trans fats causes bad cholesterol to build up in your blood vessels in the brain, blocking oxygen needed for the cells thus increasing the risk of stroke. Also unhealthy diet causes high blood pressure making your heart work harder to pump blood to your body in result of heart diseases. High blood pressure also causes the blood vessels in your brain to harden and thin, increasing the risk of stroke.

2. Smoking:

Smoking not only has a devastating effect on the health of the smoker but also to anyone that inhales its toxic fumes. Cigarettes contain high levels of cadmium that causes the blood to clot activity of cells in result of blocking blood flow and damaging the blood vessels in the brain.

3. Excessive drinking:

Moderate drinking is good for your heart, but excessive drinking can raise levels of some fats in your blood causing cholesterol to build up in the arteries and blood vessels in the brain resulting in increase of the risk of stroke.

4. Diabetes:

People with diabetes tend to develop heart disease or have strokes at an earlier age than other people. Diabetes with unhealthy diet causes high blood glucose levels that damage nerves and blood vessels, leading to complications such as heart disease and stroke, the leading causes of death among people with diabetes.

5. Obesity - a body mass index of 30 or higher:

Study shows that even after adjusting for other stroke risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, cardiac diseases, moderate alcohol consumption, and physical activity; obesity is still associated with a greatest risk of stroke in men and women.

6. Use of birth control pills:

Birth control pills contain estrogen and one of two other hormones, lynestrenol or norethisterone that increase the risk of blood clotting, which can lead to ischemic stroke especially in woman who smoke and who are older than 35.

There are many other causes of stroke such as heart diseases that we have discussed lengthily in the heart diseases articles.

2-Types of Major Stroke Diseases::

As we mentioned, strokes are caused by uncontrolled diet that is high in saturated and trans fats as a result of bad cholesterol building up in the blood vessels that block the circulation of blood to the body including the brain. If oxygen is not delivered to the brain cells, some cells die off and can not reproduce, then you may get a stroke. Other happen when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures causing the cells in your brain deprived of oxygen.

There are 2 types of stroke:

1. Ischemic stroke caused by a clot or other blockage within an artery leading to the brain.

2. Hemorrhagic stroke caused by the vessel in the brain rupturing in result of blood leaking into the brain.

1. Ischemic stroke::

This is the most common type of stroke accounting for almost 80% of all strokes. The brain depends on its arteries to bring fresh blood from the heart and lungs. The blood carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain, and takes away carbon dioxide and cellular waste. If an artery is blocked then the brain cells may not receive enough oxygen. They then cannot make enough energy and will eventually stop working.

a) If blood clots from the inside of the arteries of the brain, we have thrombic stroke.

Study shows that this type of stroke is responsible for almost 50% of all strokes. The most common problem is narrowing off the arteries in the neck or head.

b) If blood clotted in other parts of the body's arteries subsequently entering the brain, we have embolic stroke. In this case the clot was formed somewhere other than in the brain itself.

The clot then travels the bloodstream until they become lodged and can not travel any further. This naturally restricts the flow of blood to the brain and results in embolic stoke.

2. Hemorrhagic stroke::

Hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel bursts inside the brain, causing an increase of the fluid pressure on the brain and harms the brain by pressing it against the skull. Hemorrhagic stroke is associated with high blood pressure, which stresses the arterial walls until they break.

3-Most Common Ischemic Strokes::
1. Thrombotic stroke:

These strokes are also sometimes referred to as large-artery strokes. The process leading to thrombotic stroke is complex and occurs over time. Thrombotic stroke might be caused by the arterial walls slowly thickening and hardening as a result of arteries being injured. Such injures signal the immune system to release white blood cells to the site causing stroke. Thrombotic stroke also occurs when the inner wall of arteries were injured in result of less nitric oxide being produced, causing the hardening of the arteries. If the blood clot then blocks the already narrowed artery and shuts off oxygen to part of the brain, we have a thrombotic stroke.

2. Embolic stroke

An embolic stroke occurs when a blood clot or other particle forms in a blood vessel away from your brain. It is usually caused by a dislodged blood clot that has traveled through the blood vessels until it becomes wedged in an artery. It is also caused by irregular beating in the heart's two upper chambers. This abnormal heart rhythm can lead to poor blood flow and the formation of a blood clot.

4-Most Common Hemorrhagic Stroke:

Hemorrhagic stroke accounts for only 20 percent of all people admitted to hospitals for stroke. It is caused by blocking the circulation of blood in any part of the body as a result of the heart working harder in providing oxygen to the cells. The increase of blood pressure might cause a blood vessel in the brain to rupture in result of swelling in any part of the brain, causing the cells in the brain to be deprived of oxygen.

There are 2 types of hemorrhagic strokes:

1. Intracerebral hemorrhage:

Intracerebral hemorrhage is internal bleeding that can happen in any part of the brain. Blood may accumulate in the brain tissues itself, or in the space between the brain and the membranes covering it. Most commonly the problem arises in the small arterial inside the brain which have been diseased causing these tiny blood vessels to start to leak. Since the actual source of the bleeding is often small, it can take time for the blood to build up resulting in symptoms of an intracerebral hemorrhage and often increases over minutes or hours. People may not notice the problems associated with bleeding into the brain and ischemic strokes.

2. Subarachnoid hemorrhage:

Hemorrhagic strokes that cause bleeding into the fluid filled spaces located deep in the brain are called subarachnoid hemorrhage. Subarachnoid hemorrhage may occur at any age but is most common from age 40 to 65. It is caused by the presence of blood within the subarachnoid space from some pathological processes a result of ruptured aneurysms and bleeding may stop spontaneously. Other causes include vascular malformation, tumors and infection.The most effective treatment is to proceed with microsurgical clipping of the lesion. This stroke causes paralysis of all limbs, unconsciousness and bleeding into the cerebellum produceing typical signs of incoordination with headache and stiffness of the neck.

Brain injury can be as individual as people, because every case of brain injury can happen for different reasons and have different effects on people. Classifying the different types of brain injury can require a lot of research. Generally the classification starts with the two more common types of brain injury: traumatic brain injury and acquired brain injury. The levels are ranted as mild, moderate or severe. Brain injuries can also be classified as an open or closed brain injury. In this article, we'll talk about the more common types of brain injuries.

Traumatic Brain Injury-::

Traumatic brain injury can happen whenever something strikes the head with force. The force would be strong enough to cause the brain to move in the skull causing internal damage to the brain. It can also occur if the skull breaks and the break itself injures the brain.

There are various reasons for this type of force. It could due to a violent experience, sports injury or a variety of other causes. Any event that causes the head to be struck hard enough an cause this type of traumatic brain injury.

This type of brain injury can also occur from rapid movement back and forth, shaking the brain hard enough in the skull that it becomes damaged. This more commonly happens in auto accidents or in cases such as Shaken Baby Syndrome. The rapid movement back and forth can do severe damage to the brain.

How To Tell If You've Suffered Traumatic Brain Injury::

If you have suffered a severe blow to the head, or have been in an accident where your head was violently shaken, or suspect someone else has had this type of injury, go to the emergency room immediately or call 911 for further assistance. It is recommended that you do not wait. Severe brain injuries can become worse and could become fatal if not treated immediately.

Common symptoms of traumatic brain injury are as follows::

Spinal fluid coming out of the ears or nose, looking like thin, watery liquid
Loss of consciousness
Suspected concussion - not all concussions cause loss of consciousness
Severe dizziness or loss of balance
Dilated eyes
Loss of vision, or change in vision, either improved or reduced
Slow pulse
Slow breathing
Vomiting
Lethargic
Headache
Confusion
Numbness or tingling sensations in any parts of the body

Different Types of Traumatic Brain Injury::

Depending on how severe the injury is, the brain can suffer many types of injuries. Some of the more common classifications of such injuries include:

Diffuse Axonal Injury -::

This type of injury seems to be more common with the rapid movement of the head as occurs with Shaken Baby Syndrome. It usually happens because the skull is moving faster than the brain, causing certain structures in the brain to tear. This injury can be temporary or permanent, causing a coma or even possibly producing fatal effects.

Concussion - ::

A concussion can be caused by violent action toward the head, by severe blows, or a whiplash effect. This type of injury causes blood vessels to stretch. It's one of the more common types of brain injuries, and a concussion can take months or even years to fully heal.

Contusion - ::

Again, this type of traumatic brain injury will happen with a violent action at the head. The injury is caused by bruising or bleeding on the brain. If the injury is severe and there is much bruising and bleeding, it can require surgery to correct.

Acquired Brain Injury-::

An acquired brain injury occurs any time after birth and is not induced by birth trauma or hereditary. This type of injury occurs on a cellular level. Such an injury can affect the entire brain, rather than a limited area like a traumatic brain injury.

Such injuries can occur for any of the following reasons: air obstruction, chocking, throat swelling, near drowning, electrical shock, trauma to the head, severe blood loss from open wounds, heart attack, stroke, infectious diseases, Meningitis, AIDS, brain tumors, toxic exposure, illegal drug use, overdose of drugs, alcohol abuse.

Symptoms of Acquired Brain Injury::

Because this type of brain injury is internal, you might have a harder time trying to identify the symptoms. Some of the more common symptoms for acquired brain injury are:

Impairment of function
motor skills or memory
Long lengths of time spent in a still
'vegetative' state
Sudden or severe behavior changes or problems - depression
restlessness
anxiety
psychosis, etc

Different Types of Acquired Brain Injury::

Anoxic Brain Injury::

This type of injury occurs when the brain is deprived of oxygen. There are three types of anoxia: Anoxic which is no oxygen is getting through, anemic which means severely limited amounts of oxygen is getting through, and toxic which means something is blocking the oxygen in the blood from being used in the brain.

Hypoxic Brain Injury ::

This sort of brain injury occurs when the brain does get oxygen, but doesn't seem to get enough oxygen. It could happen because of lack of blood flow or blood pressure is weak.

If you should suffer from any symptoms listed, have suffered a blow to the head or you suspect that you or someone you know may have any form of brain injury, seek medical treatment right away. Call 911 if you see someone who has had an injury to the head, even if that person says they are fine. When caught early enough, many types of brain injuries are treatable.

The brain can be damaged in multiple ways. In order to understand head injuries, it is useful to understand the different types of brain injuries that can occur:

Diffuse axonal brain injuries (DAI) - ::

In this type of injury, a shearing force damages nerve fibers or stretches blood vessels in the brain. The result may be hemorrhage (bleeding) and can also cause a cascade of chemicals that are toxic to the brain to be released. The temporal and frontal lobes are often affected. Symptoms of DAI include inattentiveness, problems with memory and disorganization.

Hypoxic-Ischemic brain injuries (HII) - ::

Stroke is a common cause of this type of injury, in which the amount of oxygen is reduced to the brain (for example, from a blood clot). The injury causes brain swelling that restricts oxygen, glucose and other necessary nutrients from reaching the brain. A poor prognosis is associated with both HII and DAI in terms of cognitive function and memory impairment, if the patient survives the initial injury.

Hemorrhage - ::

A cerebral or intracranial bleed occurs when blood vessels within the brain bleed as a result of trauma or inherent weakness of a blood vessel (e.g. aneurysm). Hemorrhages may be tiny or large and symptoms correspond to the severity and location of the bleed. Hemorrhage does not always occur immediately after an injury, but may be delayed for hours or even days.

Infarction- ::

"Infarction" is the medical term for stroke. Strokes occur when an artery supplying the brain is blocked, cutting off oxygen and nutrients to the brain. Speech, language and visual problems often occur after a stroke.

Hematomas -::

Hematomas develop outside the brain. Subdural hematomas occur over the surface of the parietal or frontal lobes. A subdural hematoma is slow bleeding outside the brain caused by a vessel carrying venous (unoxygenated) blood. Epidural hematomas are usually caused by damaged arteries, which carry blood under pressure, which can cause severe pressure which must be released immediately or death will occur. Subarachnoid hemorrhages occur when bleeding spreads slowly over the brain surface. Subarachnoid hemorrhages rarely cause death and may even be symptomatic.

There are numerous types of injuries which may be caused by trauma or physical conditions. Understanding the type of injury sustained can provide clues as to what to expect in terms of symptoms and outcome. Any time a brain injury is suspected, medical attention must be sought. Brain injuries can cause permanent and severe damage when not treated. With proper treatment, many patients recover.

How to Identify Symptoms of a Head Injury::

Head injuries are all potentially serious and should be treated quickly and with a thorough assessment. Identifying the symptoms of a head injury can be done by someone in the immediate role of carer but it is very hard for a first aider to know with any certainty the precise type of head injury, so the treatment method suggested here is suitable for all head injuries while waiting for emergency medical help. Additionally, head injuries can only be effectively treated by those with emergency treatment or medical training, and as with any potentially serious injury, the victim should be taken to hospital as quickly as possible.

Steps

Be aware that the precise identification of the type and severity of a head injury are next-to-impossible for a first aider to assess. Internal injuries will require checking out by medical specialists in appropriate medical facilities.
Check for external injuries. Such signs might include:
- Bleeding
- Cuts or lacerations
- Wounds
- Foreign objects lodged in the head.
Recognize the different types of head injuries that are possible. Following a blow to the head, an accident in which the head is impacted, or the insertion of a foreign object into the head can result in the following injuries:
- Concussion
- Cerebral compression
- Skull fracture

Recognize the symptoms of each type of head injury.
- Concussion: impaired consciousness, dizziness, nausea, loss of memory, mild headache, seeing "stars", double vision, numbness, stumbling, and lack of hand-eye coordination.
- Cerebral compression: levels of response deteriorate; headaches tend to be intense; noisy, slowed, or irregular breathing; pupil sizes unequal; paralysis or weakness on one side of the body or face; drowsiness; temperature spike, fever, or flushed face; personality changes (irritable, excitable, etc.)
- Skull fracture: you will probably see an external wound or bruise or lacerations on the head and there may be a depression visible on the scalp. Check behind the ears for swelling or bruising. There may be loss of clear fluid or watery blood through an eye or nostril, blood in the white of the eye, a black-eye, and the symmetry of the head or face may be disrupted. The responsiveness of the victim may deteriorate.
Be aware that not all of the signs need to be present. The victim's condition can still be very serious, however, even when consciousness is apparent. Expect to treat the head injury in the same manner, no matter what it might be:
- Check the victim's consciousness or otherwise.
- Use the supported position for an unconscious patient.
- Clear the airway if needed. Continue checking for signs of life every few minutes.
- Keep patient rested and calm.
- Call the ambulance.
- Deal with any external wounds while waiting for the ambulance. You can cover wounds using sterile bandaging. Do not shove anything up the nostrils or into the ears - leave these clear - you can gently wipe off discharge, if any.
- Keep the victim warm. You might need to cover the victim with your jacket or a light blanket.
Always stay with a victim who has a head injury. Never assume that because they seem all right that they are:
- Watch the victim's breathing and state of consciousness.
- Keep talking to them and stay present.
- All head injuries should be seen by a professional. Some head injuries can take up to 48 hours to fully show the extent of damage.

Tips

If the patient becomes aggressive while waiting for the ambulance, keep people away and consider calling for the police to help if they can be faster, while continuing to wait for the ambulance.
Head injuries are one of the principal causes of death in wilderness accidents.[4] Always wear the appropriate safety helmets and gear when undertaking risky wilderness activities.

Prevent sports players with a head injury from returning to the game.

Your brain contains billions of nerve cells arranged in patterns that coordinate thought, emotion, behavior, movement and sensation. A complicated highway system of nerves connects your brain to the rest of your body, so communication can occur in split seconds. Think about how fast you pull your hand back from a hot stove. While all the parts of your brain work together, each part is responsible for a specific function — controlling everything from your heart rate to your mood.

Cerebrum::

The cerebrum is the largest part of your brain. It's what you probably visualize when you think of brains in general. The outermost layer of the cerebrum is the cerebral cortex, the "gray matter" of the brain. Deep folds and wrinkles in the brain increase the surface area of the gray matter, so more information can be processed.The cerebrum is divided into two halves (hemispheres) by a deep fissure. The hemispheres communicate with each other through a thick tract of nerves, called the corpus callosum, at the base of the fissure. In fact, messages to and from one side of the body are usually handled by the opposite side of the brain.

Lobes of the brain::

Your brain's hemispheres are divided into four lobes:

The frontal lobes control thinking, planning, organizing, problem solving, short-term memory and movement.

The parietal lobes interpret sensory information, such as taste, temperature and touch.

The occipital lobes process images from your eyes and link that information with images stored in memory.

The temporal lobes process information from your senses of smell, taste and sound. They also play a role in memory storage.

Cerebellum and brainstem::

The cerebellum is a wrinkled ball of tissue below and behind the rest of your brain. It works to combine sensory information from the eyes, ears and muscles to help coordinate movement.The brain stem links the brain to the spinal cord. It controls many functions vital to life, such as heart rate, blood pressure and breathing. This area is also important for sleep.

Structures deep within the brain control emotions and memories. Known as the limbic system, these structures come in pairs. Each part of this system is duplicated in the opposite half of the brain.

The thalamus acts as a gatekeeper for messages passed between the spinal cord and the cerebral hemispheres.
The hypothalamus controls emotions. It also regulates your body's temperature and controls crucial urges — such as eating or sleeping.
The hippocampus sends memories to be stored in appropriate sections of the cerebrum and then recalls them when necessary.

Peripheral nervous system::

The peripheral nervous system is all the nerves in your body, aside from the ones in your brain and spinal cord. It acts as a communication relay between your brain and your extremities. For example, if you touch a hot stove, the pain signals travel from your finger to your brain in a split second. In just as short a time, your brain tells the muscles in your arm and hand to snatch your finger off the hot stove.

Nerve cells::

Nerve cells (neurons) have two main types of branches coming off their cell bodies. Dendrites receive incoming messages from other nerve cells. Axons carry outgoing signals from the cell body to other cells — such as a nearby neuron or muscle cell.Interconnected with each other, neurons are able to provide efficient, lightning-fast communication.

Neurotransmitters::

A nerve cell (neuron) communicates with other cells through electrical impulses when the nerve cell is stimulated. Within a neuron, the impulse moves to the tip of an axon and causes the release of neurotransmitters, chemicals that act as messengers.Neurotransmitters pass through the synapse, the gap between two nerve cells, and attach to receptors on the receiving cell. This process repeats from neuron to neuron, as the impulse travels to its destination — a web of communication that allows you to move, think, feel and communicate.
