A little more about Mr. Kolezar:

"I've been working in film for the last ten years. I studied History in college and during that time I wrote and directed two feature films. After graduation, I moved to Portland where I finished my third feature. I like doing commercial work and music videos because it's a quick turnaround in comparison to full length films. I try and seek out businesses like Flutter that have an interesting aesthetic; it makes the work fulfilling. I like garlic bagels, hockey, and Jerome, AZ.

...at Flutter! When I walked into work on Sunday morning, I was truly astounded by just how great the store looked all ready for the holidays. Everything is all sparkly, with bowls of ornaments, mossy coverings, shimmery garlands, and sweet smells all around. I must say, it put me in an instant good mood. I wanted to pour a cup of nog and sing along to Bing Crosby's 'White Christmas'.

Of course, I snapped photos a'plenty. This weekend, I plan to bring in one of my old cameras and some black & white film and go picture crazy. But for now, some phone photographs of tree trimmings and ornaments in the shop that make my heart melt and holiday spirit rise...

A Few Fluttery Things.

Happy Sunday! I hope you all are feeling well-rested with an extra hour of sleep thanks to Daylight Savings Time. Today I have a few things to share. First, I must mention that our sister store Eden (located in the Pearl District) now has an online shop, as well as a stunning new lookbook! The photographs, by Annie Montgomery, were shot in a Washington Forest and feature beautiful jewelry and vintage clothing, models, and even furniture (yes, put in the middle of the trees.) I think it all turned out so beautifully, and am quite happy Eden goods can now be purchased from all over the USA!

Good evening, Flutter fans! I hope that you all enjoyed the crisp sunny weather today- I know I did. Portland looks beautiful right now- Autumn just suits this city so well. If tomorrow is as nice as today was, I think I might need to take a walk down to Laurelhurst Park with some tea, a blanket, and a good book.

Anyway, besides talking about the seasons and the weather, I thought tonight it would be nice to share some photographs and art from the past, all inspired from items in the shop. We sell such a wide variety of vintage and vintage-inspired items, I knew that I could easily find scenes, advertisements, paintings, and old photographs that pair well with some of our products. Plus, sometimes it's just nice to take a peek into the past.

Painted Flutter.

I often find myself inspired while spending my Sundays at Flutter. Not only do I have some of my favorite music playing and get to meet some lovely folks, but there's no denying that I am completely surrounded by beautiful things. Usually I find this inspiration being targeted to my camera, but this week I decided to do something a little different. During the few quieter moments in the shop, I broke out my sketchbook and doodled some of my favorite objects and garments. While curled up on my sofa during the evening (while watching some bad tv, I admit), I painted them in with watercolors.

Oh, pretty little things, I love thee. This coming week I'd like to pair some shop objects with some of my favorite old film stars. I have a feeling they'll go together hand-in-hand.

It looks like it's going to be a lovely weekend. I wish you all: cinnamon vanilla tea (my current favorite), warm apple crisp, a classic movie viewing with someone you admire, a great thrift store find, sweet scents, some bed reading, good crisp weather, flirtations, salted caramels, a cozy nap, bursts of inspiration, some ridiculous dance moves, and discovery.

Have I mentioned how much I love this time of year? October is the best. You can feel the excitement in the air from children and childlike adults (like myself) getting ready for Halloween. It's the only time you can dress up as anything you desire and eat an obscene amount of candy without question. There are masquerades and costume parties, haunted houses and pumpkin patch strolls. The best.

Here at Flutter we're getting into the Halloween spirit. There are beautiful decorations, novelties, vintage costumes, etcetera. And masks, oh the masks...

These Peruvian ones and our lovely crow ones are also spectacular for the holiday. Now who else thinks our beloved shop cat King needs one of these?

A Lovely Sunday.

Good evening, folks. It is the end of Sunday and the beginning of autumn, which means I spent my day at Flutter listening to both the pounding rain and some lovely music (my favorites for rainy shop days? Nick Cave, Billie Holiday, and The Magnetic Fields.) Wanderers came in and out, soaked by the rain, but happy to be greeted by King, our ever-charming cat, and the coziness of the shop. I'll tell you, I am a deep lover of this time of year. Crisp air, vibrant colors, scarf weather... and Halloween. I love Halloween. But we'll get more into that next week.

Being a collector and design lover (see more here), there are many things inside Flutter that strike my fancy. Industrial furniture, inspiring books, vintage oddities, and one-of-a-kind dresses. Fall at Flutter.

Fall has arrived at Flutter! When I came into work on Sunday, I was completely blown away by how different the shop looks. Cindy closed the shop for a day to bring in new products, take out some old ones, and completely rearrange everything. Let me tell you, it looks lovely.

There are so many new items coming in for Autumn and the holidays. New books, scents, household items, and novelties, as well as new vintage finds. There are a couple antique couches I just dream of curling up on at home with my cat and a cup of tea.

Now, let's get ready for this heat to end and the leaves to change. This year I am welcoming fall with open arms.

New in the shop: my picks:

1 and 2. Tomas Casademunt and The Selby is in your place: two very inspiring photography and interior books. Full of color and the prettiest clutter.
3. New Tokyomilk roll-ons. Not only do they smell delicious, but they come packaged in pretty vials with corks. I'm such a lover of this company.
4. Tree identification matches. We have a few new matchbook boxes in stock, but these ones are my favorites. Simple & classic packaging for a home necessity.
5. Classic nudie postcards. I myself have already purchased three of these and they look perfect hung next to my canopy bed in my girly bedroom.
6. Horse bottle opener. It reminds me of a door knocker on a old pub.
7. More classic naked ladies, this time on little pocket mirrors. I can't resist a little vintage sexiness to keep in my purse.
8. Devil acrobat toy. Just in time for Halloween, I'm pretty sure my little boys would love this.
9. I love Eleanor Grosch's work, so I was quite happy to see a trunk filled with her notecards for sale.

Flutter on Film.

Through the lens of an old Canon film camera...

It sure does look pretty, doesn't it? I usually snap most pictures of the shop on my iPhone, but last week I brought one of my film cameras in (I'm a bit of an obsessive collector) and snapped these. Just like certain albums sound best heard on a scratchy old record player, I think Flutter looks best on film. Like any good classic.

On another note, come stop by the shop this week- a bunch of items are now on sale in the back, along with furniture on the sidewalk. We're clearing way for a whole lot of new products coming in for the fall. Or just come by to pet King, marvel at our new arrow sign (seen above), and "smoke" some candy cigarettes!

I don't know if you have come by the shop in the past month, but it looks like the circus has arrived! Inside both of our huge front windows there are wooden games, acrobats, clowns, and even a full-size puppet theater with wiggling marionettes...

The entire display was handcrafted and painted by local artist Stephanie Brockway, who has been showing her work all over since 2004. She definitely knows how to craft a beautiful puppet. Each one has it's own unique look and seems like its right out of the twenties or thirties. All items are available to purchase (prices vary.) Come stop by and see these fanciful creations yourself!

Summertime at Flutter.

Good afternoon! This is Summer, your new summertime Sunday shopgirl (I do like the way that sounds.) I must say, I am thoroughly enjoying spending my weekend time in Flutter, surrounded by lovely oddities, gorgeous dresses, and intoxicating scents. And of course, having long conversations with King the shop-cat... he has quite the nightlife when the lights in the store go out, believe me. The tales are epic!

First I'd like to share some photos I have been taking during my time at the shop. I love taking pictures, and Flutter seems to be the perfect place for inspiration, even if just snapped on my iPhone...

Ah, a lovely place to be. And now, some of my favorite new (non-vintage) items I have been absolutely loving (all currently available at Flutter):

1. Tokyomilk's Dark Bittersweet perfume- one of the best smells ever. There's nothing quite like smelling as if you've been endulging in the finest dark chocolate.
2. The beloved frog prince bottle opener. He just makes me smile.
3. These dried bugs in glass paperweights are both a little eerie and breathtaking.
4. The Encyclopedia of the Exquisite has been fabulous to flip through while at the register. Did you know crickets used to be prized pets and champagne manufacturing was once a very dangerous occupation due to bottles exploding?
5. Another Tokyomilk product I am loving: Kabuki shea butter lotion. It smells like sugared citrus fruit and jasmine flowers and leaves your hands soft as silk.
6. Photobooth Dogs. Dogs. In photobooths. Need I say more?
7. I want to take these alphabet discs and hang banners all around my house of fanciful words.
8. I love all the masks we have in the store, but for some reason, this bear is my favorite. His face reminds me of old drawings from The Three Little Bears. This would make a mighty fine photobooth prop.

PERFUME

I love perfume. It is such an easy pleasure: practically guilt-free, completely mood altering and indulgent. For pennies a day anyone can slip on this subtle second skin, causing people to lean in and breathe deep. Hardly a day goes by without someone telling me I smell great. I used to hate the smell of perfume, I just didn’t know what I was missing. I told Cindy I’d help her choose perfumes for the new shop, EDEN, and it blasted open a new dimension of perfumes for me. My desk sprouted a forest of tester vials, and for a few weeks I was just swimming in new scents. I would spend quiet evenings at home spritzing my wrists, smelling, taking notes. I wore a different scent every day for a month. I learned a thing or two.

1. There is definitely such a thing as an evening fragrance. I gave the super-sultry ‘a la nuit’ by Serge Lutens a test drive on the PSU campus, and I felt like I’d gone to school in a slip. Which could be awesome, I guess.

2. There are places you really ought not wear highly discernable fragrance. Like, a martial arts dojo on a Saturday morning. One of my favorites is so volatile, so intense that I can’t really wear it out in the world. It’s the perfume equivalent of a black satin ball gown (Samsara by Guerlain).

3. I have no allegiance to one scent or brand or type. Choosing a scent to wear in the morning is all about my mood, the season, what I have to do that day. It’s nice to have a wardrobe of options, BUT there is something to be said for having a signature scent. Once I tried on a perfume and immediately realized I’d made a mistake- it smelled EXACTLY like a friend of mine, and I was going to be seeing her later in the day. Smell is such an intense way to recall events or people. It's because our olfactory bulbs are strongly linked with parts of the brain associated with memory and emotion. Last time I got hijacked by scent was when I was unpacking a box and my old scented Strawberry Shortcake doll was in there. Oh Hasbro, tugging my heartstrings!

4. “Artificial” chemicals in perfume are ok with me- in fact they can be completely amazing (and use literally tons less natural resources). I wouldn’t trust a lab to make a decent rose or other single note fragrance, but for a complex, 9-layer spice bomb with notes of frankincense, pine needles, thyme, honey and figs, evocative of a campfire on a windswept island… well, that takes a certain amount of alchemical magic; a mixing of essential oils, plant waxes and lab-made ingredients. Yes, please.

Jean-Marie Farina by French perfumers Roger and Gallet is one of the first Eau de Colognes ever made (the formula was perfected in 1806!). Bright and botanical, it’s extremely refreshing and perfect for summer. As crisp and classy as a Bombay gin and tonic. Their other scents are equally compelling (try the Bois d’Orange), and totally unisex. It’s at Flutter.

Matin d’Orage by Annick Goutal is a terrific floral. It was inspired by the smell of a Japanese garden after a storm, broken leaves and gardenia and orange blossoms whipped by the wind. It is beautiful and wearable, and smells especially good in warmer months. Cindy will carry it at the new store, Eden, as well as three more Goutal scents that have enormous reputations. Eau d'Hadrien might be the most popular scent in France.

Cocoa Tamarind by Voluspa never smells wrong, on anyone, ever. It is the most flattering, versatile perfume I have ever smelled, and is such a good deal (oh, Voluspa!). At Flutter.

Dead Sexy by Tokyo Milk. Ok, It was hard to choose, they have such a range of scents, and I love what they do. I don’t know if it’s necessarily my favorite, but it is a standout. One of the biggest perks of working at Flutter is deciding which scent to put on in the morning. We have more than 30 Tokyo Milk perfumes, so I don’t get tired of any one of them. Shout out to Kabuki, Marine Sel, Bittersweet and Marie.

Encens Mystic, a little roll-on solid perfume by a French company called Crazy Libellule. It smells like the Hagia Sophia must have smelled 300 years ago: smoky myrrh, beeswax, straw and pine needles. It kind of takes my breath away. Plus, it’s so portable and affordable. It's at Flutter.

Sa Majeste La Rose by Serge Lutens. The rose is so maligned. Horrible caricatures of it exist everywhere, in cheap perfumes and all manner of scented products (lemon knows how it feels). A really good rose is so difficult and costly to procure that it seems to only exist in really high-end perfumes. The Lutens version is so lovely, it is the kind of rose you just want to stick your whole face in. It is GORGEOUS. At Eden.

Vanille Sauvage de Madagascar- I put this one here because it’s the one I get the most compliments on (usually from men who would say that they hate perfume). I like it even though it’s not edgy or complicated (maybe the art house perfumes have spoiled me). I am always drawn back to its simplicity and one-note perfection. At Flutter.

Choosing a perfume is so personal. They react with your unique chemistry, so what smells great on your best friend might be just awful on you, or it might be great in a different way. For this reason, you should never buy a scent untested. That means: actually sprayed on your skin. When I go into a store with a lot of options, I’ll sniff the decanters to get an idea, and narrow it down to four (or less) to actually try on. This is something I can’t do often, as it’s a real gamble- I have to go the rest of the day smelling like the combination of these four, and it might be horrible. I’ll put one on each wrist and one on each shoulder, or the bend of my elbow, so they each have an anatomical zone to themselves to work their special magic. I save this kind of experiment for a trip to The Perfume House on Hawthorne. I can’t recommend that place enough.

Most perfumes will have a spectrum of scents, starting with the first spray (heavy on the alcohol until it evaporates, unless it’s a roll on). That’s what they call the “top note”, and they’re typically the brightest, most volatile aspects of the scent. Wait a minute or two, then smell it again… the middle notes are emerging. They are considered the heart of the perfume, and they are most noticeable after the smaller molecules of the top notes evaporate. These components combine with the heavier molecules, typically resinous or powdery smells. They’re the ones that are good at sticking around to create the lasting impression of the perfume, called the dry down. The dry down is the character of the scent after it dries, like maybe a full hour later. It might be a completely different scent. You may love the dry down, or you might decide you need a long shower. I’ve scrubbed and scrubbed my wrists, and there are some tenacious elements that really linger, usually the ones I can’t stand. Luckily, in the morning it's usually gone and I can start the adventure all over again.

Ahhh, Spring, my dear old friend, you have returned. The cherry blossoms and daffodils are in full bloom and it is absolutely gorgeous in Portland! This past Saturday, was sunny and still cold outside, but the light was amazing. I simply had to head outside for a walk! I decided it would be a perfect day to take a stroll along Mississippi and visit Flutter for some snapshots. Take a look at a few of my favorite things, I saw along the way....

It's starting to look more like Spring outside, with the Cherry Blossoms blooming, and the sun peeking out once in a awhile! This is my favorite time of year because it's so beautiful and fresh when the flowers explode across the city and the weather gets a bit warmer. We are in full swing at Flutter with lots of new fragrances and home decor, books and novelties that will put a spring in your step!

We love our apothecary at Flutter so much that we have been expanding it this season, to include more of your favorites! The fragrance line by Mor has been in our clutches for awhile, and we could not be more excited about all of the new scents. The packaging is delightful and the perfume oils, to die for in unique combinations.

Introducing the newest from famed TokyoMilk Apothecary! Just in time for a cure to, dry winter skin, and the desire for a fresh new scent, these rare and unique combinations of ingredients are on the mark. "The alchemy of allure", is a proper description of this brand new endeavor of designer, Margot Elena.

The latest addition to the lineup of fabulous products transports you to an uncommon place. "The Dark Line", includes delicious perfumes and lip elixirs, now available at Flutter and of course in our online boutique. I'm particularly excited about the lip elixirs, which are made with natural ingredients like bee balm, green tea, aloe and jasmine(see below). My personal favorite is Le Vie En Rose, so far, but I still have a lot of taste testing to do before I formally commit. This flavor is so exotically feminine and reminds of the old fashioned rosebud salve I used growing up, but with a modern update of citrus, vanilla and a hint of peach. This one is bold and unique, you won't taste anything else like it. Other flavors like Absinthe and Cherry Bourbon are on my list to try next, can't hardly wait until my first runs out!

Hatch Show Print, the History of a Great American Poster

It's no news that Flutter loves books and Portland loves books as well, so it works out perfectly for everyone. Each season, Kalaisha and Cindy hand select an amazing library of awesomeness in many categories to admire and inspire. For Spring, they have curated an extra lot of books in the creative realm. I'm coveting this Book of Old Poster Copies. They just don't make them like that anymore do they? Now you can have your own collection to do what you will with....

I can never seem to acquire enough photography books. There are so many great ones out there, perfect for visual inspiration on a whim. The graphic presentation of this book is beautifully detailed with hand painted, quotes. Unknown Halsman, reveals and overlooked, bizarre, playful side of Philippe Halsman, in this magnificent collection.

Graffiti Asia

This book shows photos of artists work from many countries in Asia, along with interviews and quotes, about this fascinating and evolving art genre. Nothing is left untouched in this journey through Berlin, from the two world wars, to the strength in character of the people of this remarkable city. A photographic travel log into the history of one of the most interesting cities in the world. Berlin, Portrait of a City, has been called the most comprehensive book on Berlin ever made.

The Vegetable Garden

I'm am so in love with these classic, vintage illustrated books popping up at Flutter. Just in time for Spring gardening, this illustrated book of vegetable prints to keep bound or ready to frame, can only be described as stunning. The Vegetable Garden features some of the most delicately, detailed science illustrations of all time. You'll find yourself, literally, staring at each page for hours.

This weekend, I was fortunate enough to sit down with Jill McKeever, creator of the natural apothecary line, For Strange Women and have a lovely chat about her creative process. This collection of 100% natural artisan fragrances and unique concoctions of plant extracts are coveted for many reasons. It's makes perfect "scents" when you see a glimpse into this fascinating world of tradition infused with modern ideas. Jill clearly does her work from a very authentic place, where all aspects of her life are filled with inspiration that is unique to her as a designer. It was a pleasure speaking with her about her life and work.

Me (Brehan Todd)-Hello Jill, it's so nice to meet you. Tell me about your background?

Jill-I am an electronic artist and analogue "craftress" in Kansas City, MO. As an artist my first language was dance, then music, and now perfumery, and although they seem as if they would be very different, these disciplines are truly interconnected. Balance, harmony, acute sensory perception, and creative alchemy will always draw me into their magic.

I have a "professional" background in video, graphic design, screen-printing, and photography. I refuse to work for "the man" anymore though.

In order to learn the science behind the magic, did you take chemistry or other classes to educate yourself, or were you born and alchemist?

No, I am a self-teacher. I experiment a lot and I go with my instincts, always.

I began making my own concoctions about 10 years ago because I am sensitive to the harsh chemicals used in commercial cosmetics, fragrances, and soaps, and could not find truly natural products anywhere. I fell in love with herbalism, aromatherapy, and eventually the much broader realm of natural perfumery. Although I make everything from soap to lipstick for myself, I decided to focus my offerings here to the things that are most pleasing to the senses. I am a very tactile-oriented person and love exploring texture. Texture is something that can be appreciated by all of the senses, and I believe there is a comfort to be found in natural ingredients that nothing else compares to.

Who, if anyone, is your muse?

The moon and the kitty cats I encounter on my walks around the neighborhood.

How do you know when a scent is complete?

I usually already have the exact scent I am wanting to make in my mind before I begin making it. For this reason, sometimes it takes a really long time to create a perfume. Some have taken as long as a year to get right.

Absinthe seems to be really popular these days in the form of novelty items. We love your absinthe lips at Flutter. Could you describe the taste for those of us who have never tried absinthe?

"Absinthe is a very bright, sharp taste, similar to black licorice but not as harsh or dark. It is often prepared with sugar so when it is sweetened it tastes like a really delicious candy, and almost minty."

Where do you find inspiration and ideas for new products?

I just make anything that I wish existed (but to my knowledge does not.) I think a lot of people have great original ideas all the time, and the inspiration is not as difficult to harness as the motivation to do it.

Do you have a favorite product currently in your line? Which one and why?

My favorite product is always the new one that is next on the list to make. I have tons of ideas lined up and not enough time to make all of them, and when I am working on something new I can hardly stand it because there has been so much thought and anticipation to get to the point where I am developing it!

Your website is really awesome and fun to travel around, Did you design it yourself and what was the inspiration? To me it feels very much like I'm entering a sort of virtual boutique, and sort of like i'm being invited into your home.

Yes, I designed it. I have made other websites in the same way, where each page is a "room" in my virtual space. I am a cancer and inviting people to my home is very satisfying to me, as well as working from home. Most of the furnishings are actual photos I took of things around my house and I just arranged them on a lovely vintage wallpaper background. My home does not have lovely vintage wallpaper, though.

What films, music and fine art do you find inspiring these days?

I have been listening to Broken Bells a lot lately... I love music that has texture and organic sounds layered throughout a well developed soundscape. I used to do a lot of audio design and music production so I really have an appreciation for well produced albums, which there are not much of anymore! Everything is done so fast and cheap, and so much has been lost in the digital landscape.

I love documentaries, and am going to True/False fest with my boyfriend next week-ish. We are also working on a documentary that will be out next year. My favorite painters of the moment are Colette Calascione and Swanbones.
