Within “Agora thinks Performance Art”, that focuses on the bridges and non-bridges between choreography and performance art, a performance evening that combines the works of artists from the two fields.

The performance artist Lan Hungh and the choreographer/dancer Hermann Heisig were requested to show each one a solo piece in the same evening. The ideia is to give the members of the audience the opportunity to experience works that comes from the two distinctive backgrounds and practices, and make their own links, connections or disconnections. We welcome you to take part of this experience.

The following day will consist of a round table, with more then 25 professionals from both fields, discussing how each discipline sees the other, what are the clichés, why the similarities in their artistic product and why these scenes are so segregated here in Berlin.

“Agora Thinks Performance Art”, Agora’s program inside the frame on “The Month of Performance Art Berlin”, focuses on questions that permeate, connect and disconnect two distinctive manifestations from the performative field: Choreography/Dance and Performance Art.

The program consists of different activities that Agora proposes to raise questions and create contexts to encourage the interaction between Contemporary Dance and Performance Art professionals.

The performative body in conceptual construction

This workshop is about exercising and analyzing performance art in different contexts, to conceptualize a performance and to make it not an abstract movement or action, but a common communicative human language.

Another part of the workshop will be a research of each participant, to find the common desire and the subconsciously common-will between performer and others (audience). We will practice these in order to straighten a performance and to produce more interactivity.

These are some questions we will relate to during the workshop:

What is the basic element to construct a performance?

How minimal can a performance be?

How to deal with terms such as “site-specific”, “context”, “interaction” and “provocation” in a performance?

Should we worry about the audience, or should we let audience affect us?

How change the world?

On May 11th, the workshop will be followed by a performance by Lan Hungh and another by Hermann Heisig, as continuation of “Agora thinks performance Art” program.

About the Instructor

Lan Hughn is a taiwanese artists active in many disciplines.

Lan studied musical theatre in CNR of Rueil-Malmaison in France, in 2005 he moved to Berlin.

He has been invited as artist/ performer for Détournement Venice 2009, Jerusalem Show 2012, “art is action = action is production in Tabacalera-Madrid, GFZK in Leipzig, Infr’action Venice and many important art/ performance festivals. He works actively as body politician in his performances, provocatively and site-specifically.

In the prize winning work “Nomadic Mushrooms”(Jeunes Createur most votes from public), he creates a piece which dialogues with painting, installation and performance. “Seven Shanzhai Pieces” raised the issue of copyright in performance and Chinese productions. “Free me, I need to do performance” questions about the visibility of work (the performance is invisible, when the public sees it, and the performance is gone), “Please wait till your number is called” exams how theater context could affect a performance.

Currently Lan is working in Stattberlin as art director and curator, as well as in MPA-2013 as an associate curator.

Prerequisites

People who has a strong will to discuss and exercise performance art. People that are open with other’s and their own body, as well as comfortable with provocative and sexual content and willing to put it into analyzation.

Where is Jelili Atiku?

Co-lab editions 10 involves the collaboration between the presence of the Taiwanese artist Lan Hungh and the absence of the Nigerian artist Jelili Atiku. Where is Jelili Atiku?

Atiku was retained in Nigeria due to the denial of his VISA by the German embassy. After the artist submitted the required documents with full support of the art project space Savvy Contemporary Berlin and the travel grant from Prince Claus Funds for Culture and Development - Netherlands, Jelili Atiku's VISA was denied. The ambiguous reason stated that ”the information submitted regarding the justification for the purpose and conditions of the intended stay was not reliable”. This is even more surprising, as Jelili Atiku just returned to Nigeria from a performance art tour through several prestigious institutions in Europe, including the Tate London.

This situation is becoming a rather common issue, especially with regard to African artists that receive a grant or a collaboration possibility in the West, but are still refused the possibility of fulfilling these opportunities. But this time, both artists, Lan Hungh and Jelili Atiku, with full support of the Co-lab editions program and Savvy Contemporary, decided to go beyond the hurdles posed by the embassy and to give continuity to their collaboration. After many Skype conversations, telephone calls, emails and exchanges of pictures and relevant documents, all spiced by bad internet connections, both artists embraced this issue as a motivation to develop their collaboration. This collaboration between Lan hungh and Jelili Atiku will be an epitome of inventing ways of being together.

Furthermore, Co-Lab editions 10 will proceed with its initial conceptual approach of testing both artists desire and ability to share creative authorship by engaging and allowing members of the audience to act as co-collaborators and creators of an art work. Such accomplishment cannot take place without formulating a last question:
What does it take to build a co-authorship work between artists and their audience, when both artists are situated in two different locations, 7,405 Km away from each other, in two different contexts, involved within two distinct groups of spectators?

For its third occurrence, “Voyeurs” takes on a more intensive pace to explore its concept of out-of-gaze performances by inviting three artists to inhabit and exploit “the cube inside the cube” over the course of three evenings and three different performances.

“Voyeurs 3.0” is co-curated by EXPO and Vassiliki Vayenou. “Voyeurs 3.0” is organized with the support of berlinerpool (www.berlinerpool.de).

“Voyeurs”

In “Voyeurs”, performers don’t act directly in front of the public. They are entrapped within the exhibiting apparatus, a closed white cube of 8m³ from which spectators are excluded. “Voyeurs” revolves around a voyeuristic contraption.

If the performance takes place inside a closed space, the spectators peek only what peers through the fabric of the cube. If they are not in it, they are forced outside of it. They can surround it, move around it, sit next to it, stand far from it, look at it, come closer and peep in it or do none of the above. The choice is theirs.

In “Voyeurs”, the viewer is put in the position to think about his place in the viewing process. He can interact (peep) with the structure separating him from the performer or he can decide not to and surrender his ability to see, possibly letting his other senses take over his experience of the performance.

With “Voyeurs”, artists are invited to take advantage of this peculiar and perverted scenography which either deals with subjects already present in their work or explores new facets of it.

Taiwanese; lives and works in Berlin

After graduating from Taiwan University of Arts, Lan Hunghstudied theatrical music in France, at the Conversatoire National de Région à Rueil-Malmaison.

Lan Hungh's practice consists of performances, music, installations, videos, sculptures and curatings. In his work, he explores the concept of the everyday and life's intimacies. With a mixture of culture, his performances function as diaries; they incorporate music and movement from personal experience.

Frauke Frech studied Performance and Fine Art with La Ribot and Yan Duyvendak at Geneva University of Art and Design and with Peter Hendricks at Muthesius Academy in Kiel.

Frauke Frech is a performance and visual artist whose practice combines performance art with dance, installation, video and real-time video. In her work, she investigates personal and social relationships, boundaries and translation processes.

Maria Mitsopoulou

Maria Mitsopoulou studied in Greece and Spain. After graduating as a painter in Thessaloniki, she followed courses at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Valencia. In 2004, she obtained a Master of Studies and Projects on Visual Culture from the University of Barcelona.

Throughout her work, Maria Mitsopoulou creates, captures, and reproduces collective and individual processes of cultural resistance. Through her performative practice, she reflects on issues related to identity, cultural normalization, gender, human relations, art productions and visual representations.

Vassiliki Vayenou

Greek; lives and works in Berlin

Vassiliki Vayenou studied Art History at the Queens College in New York and the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. She writes art reviews and curates exhibitions.

Live Performances within the Project “Art needs Space”

We would like to invite you to Live Actions and Performances within the Project “Kunst braucht Fläche” (“Art needs space”)

On Saturday, July 21, 2012 from 17:00 3 live performances will take place at 2 locations:

1. at the intersection Torstraße / Schönhauser Allee / Alte Schönhauser Straße the artist Tofa will create an art piece with a mix technology of painting and stencils (air-brushed stencils collage)

2. at Bernauer Straße 50, across the entrance to Mauerpark, two artists present their works: Alexandre Sannen will design the space with live painting and Lan Hungh will presented a live performance.

The action at the Bernauer Straße will continue on Sunday, July 22, 2012. Time: 15:00-19:00

About the project:
From July 21st for two weeks (until August 5th), several of selected urban advertisement spaces (such as billboards, city banners, and columns in various sizes) in the inner Berlin city centre, will be open for Berlin based artists to show their work.

Wir möchten euch am Samstag, 21 Juli 2012 ab 17:00 zu Live/Performance Aktionen einladen, die an 2 Standorten stattfinden:

1. an der Kreuzung Torstraße/ Schönhauser Allee/ Alte Schönhauser Straße wird der Künstler Tofa eine Freifläche mit einer Mixtechnik aus Malerei und Stencils (Sprühschablonen-Collage) gestalten

2. an der Bernauer Straße 50, gegenüber vom Eingang des Mauerparks werden zwei Künstler ihre Werke präsentieren: Alexandre Sannen gestaltet die Fläche mit Live-Malerei und Lan Hungh präsentiert eine Performance.

Der Gedanke hinter dem Projekt „KUNST BRAUCHT FLÄCHE“

Vom 21. Juli werden für zwei Wochen (bis 5. August) mehrere ausgewählte Plakatwerbeflächen in der Innenstadt Berlins (wie z.B.: Werbetafel, Stadtbanner und Litfaßsäulen in verschiedenen Größen) zum freien Gastalten zur Verfügung gestellt.
Aus Werken, die man bei Ausstellungen sehen kann, wird Kunst für die Straße zugänglich gemacht, Street-Art mal anders: Die Tendenz Street-Art Kunst in Galerien und renommierten Museen zu präsentieren wird umgedreht. Aus den zahlreich eingegangenen Bewerbungen wurden final 18 Arbeiten ausgewählt, die an neun zentralen Plakatflächen Berlins der Öffentlichkeit dargeboten werden.

Wir wollten daran erinnern, dass eine Werbefläche etwas Schönes ist und zeigen, dass der Inhalt die Werbefläche ausmacht, außerdem wollten wir eine aktive Gestaltung des öffentlichen urbanen Raums ermöglichen und das Stadtbild auf kreative Weise verändern und den Künstlern eine Plattform bieten ihre Werke einem breiten Publikum vorzustellen und somit junge Künstler zu fördern.

Preface for the catalogue of the exhibition “RPLCMNT”, 2010

An object is an object is an object…

But is an object in the sense of a physical body, notwithstanding its abstract and epistemological connotations, really an object in the sense in which it is generally objectively perceived i.e. having a specific form and function? Supposed a RPLCMNT of the term ‘object’ was done with the term ‘hanger’. Yes, a hanger! This noun defined by the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary as a curved piece of wood, plastic or wire, with a hook at the top, that you use to hang clothes up on. This piece of design so much a perfect example of Louis Sullivan’s postulation about form follows function threatens to be once again the protagonist. With its very particular form, this object which is trimmed and destined to fulfill a definite functionality i.e. carry clothes, forces us to reconsider or perception about form and functionality, reality and imaginary, truth and lies, as well as an almost evangelistic notion of belief and disbelief as described by Carson Chan (See page X). In fact, the aforementioned hanger instigates us to reflect on the subjectivity of objects and their content.

True lies – The finding, combining, transforming and presenting of sometimes trivial objects and materials as art works built some of the milestones in art history in the last century; be it Objet Trouvé, Ready Mades or Appropriation Art. All these have in common the fact that these art works are stuck between two sides of the same coin; on the one hand the lie of being an authentic and original art work, as they are based on found objects, which in their form have already attained the utmost functionality and on the other hand, the truth of being in a particular context and concept, thereby gaining a new authenticity, originality and innovativeness. Thus is the case with the famous hangers found on the way by Lan Hungh (1976, Taiwan) and Darri Lorenzen (1977, Iceland) on the way to SAVVY Contemporary for the first real meeting on their exhibition project, which will later be entitled RPLCMNT. This twist of fate thus became a trigger for both artists to playfully research on the truth, the hyper-real and their opposites. Their apprehension of reality can thus be likened to Paul Watzlawick’s theory on the perception of reality:

“It is rather important for us… to be content with the much simpler perception of reality, namely as a product of two elementary principles: chance and necessity.”1

This ideology also shared by the Nobel Laureate Jacque Monod in his epic on the philosophy of Biology2 goes as far as postulating that the interaction between chance and necessity is the point of origin of life. If this be the case, then Hungh’s and Lorenzen’s ‘necessity’ to do art/ an exhibition and their ‘chance’ of finding a carton of hangers is the initial point of a new reality.

Their playful research process they coined experience of experimentation in the new-found studio at the SAVVY contemporary space entailed creating very geometric hanger-sculptures or chance-sculptures by throwing the hangers like in a game of dart. The research and development process i.e. the formation became the art, just as much as the form which will be realized as drawings, photography, videos, sculptures and performances… with replacement at the focus.

RPLCMNT – the concept of replacement involves the putting or usage of something in the place of another which in the case of this exhibition might imply the replacement of truth with lies, belief with disbelief, reality with unreality and vice versa. But the idea of replacement which has been reduced to the abstract terminology and consonant-entity RPLCMNT is actually literally dissected by Hungh and Lorenzen into its syllabic bits and pieces. With the patience in repetition, time and the quest for understanding by repeating, they attend to the prefix Re-. By doing a parallel exhibition in the SAVVY contemporary art space and on the internet, www.rplcmnt.tumblr.com, the artists seem to question the concept of space and physicality as well as the gallery a geographical Place where art is exposed. They seem to attend to the suffix –ment by their drill towards the action and the process as result.

Trialogue – by inviting the curator Pauline Doutreluingne (xxxx, Belgium) to build up a trialogue with the artists Lan Hungh and Darri Lorenzen, SAVVY contemporary pursues its aim of establishing a platform for art irrespective of the “western” or “non-western” background of the artists, but with more emphasis on the qualitative depth and scope of their artistic production. With the challenge of working together despite the nuances in the artistic languages (related maybe to culture, education, personal affections, media, etc.) both artists achieve a rapproachement of visions and cultures which is hardly achieved in other fields of life. With this approach and the brilliant cooperation in this exhibition they already do a RPLCMNT of the current way art from the “west” or “non-west” is discoursed, with a more objective, and less geography-oriented perception of art.

In John 20:24-9, we’re told that Thomas the Apostle refused to believe that Jesus has come back to life. For one of the most miraculous events in Christianity, the story of the resurrection— an event that both tests and requires the strength of faith over the world of perceptible truth— has built into it a moment of faithlessness. “Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails,” said the incredulous Thomas, “and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” To preserve a faith stronger than logic, we have in him a surrogate for our doubting. In Thomas,
the gospel presents a figure that ratifies our own uncertainties of things normally impossible. More interesting than Thomas’ gall in doubting Jesus’ transcendence of the material world is his need to confirm the claim through experience. In other words, we only ever know something if we experience it— otherwise it remains in the realm of faith.
If knowledge is information acquired through experience, then for artists Lan Hungh (1976, Taipei) and Darri Lorenzen (1978, Reykjavik), the aesthetic experience, the physical apprehension of art, is a key consideration that spans their practices. What appears, at face value, to be two artists operating within different traditions, aesthetics and intentions, becomes blended at moments when the dominant role the viewer’s body is recognized in many of their pieces. Lorenzen’s Fiskur (2004), first presented at Klink & Bank in Reykjavik, seems to be an early example of how the viewer’s body in experiencing artwork ultimately becomes the work itself. As someone crouches down to see a series of Polaroids affixed to the base of a wall, themselves depicting people crouching by the same wall, a photographer takes a Polaroid photo of the crouching viewer, whose image is then placed with the others. Here, the viewing, the viewer, and the pieces are inextricable from each other, and one thinks of Hungh’s Please Wait Until Your Number is Called, a piece in which paying viewers go through different doors to enter a theatre. Some end up in the audience, some end up on stage, some others still, are led backstage, their inability to view the ‘action’ in the theatre reveals viewing and presence as the real subject of the work.

Often, where Lorenzen is keen to extract the directed forces of narration from his work, Hungh imposes himself as a
locus of meaning. In Lorenzen’s Converge (2008), spectators find themselves, temporarily, in a heightened state of self- awareness. Locked in a room for five minutes, a glowing light bulb dims during this time until the room is completely dark. Simultaneously, a faint sound in the room crescendos, gradually throwing the visitors’ grasp of their surroundings into urgent questioning. How long will we be locked in here for? What will happen next? Likewise, Hungh’s Demolished Sofa (2009) challenges exhibition visitors in a physically felt way.
Disguised as an old armchair in a gallery space, visitors sit upon it, knowingly or not, to discover the artist
beneath the surface of the upholstery, his naked body at times visible through strategically placed openings in the upholstery. The artist’s flesh and our direct surprising interaction with its warmth and movement implicate our own bodies as generators of meaning and consequence. The artist-as-armchair and the room that darkens itself are voiceless devices; their power lies not in their being, but in their potential to activate meaning, experience and ultimately knowledge within their audiences. Where for Thomas, experience made him a believer, Hungh and Lorenzen transforms us from passive viewers into witnesses and participants of artistic becoming.

I pretend my self as a chair, waiting for people to sit on me.

I wasn't moving, most of the visitors missed it.

they could check the chair is "male", if they open the pocket.

Instead of having “performer performs”, the artist chooses a saddle almost invisible way to create intimacy with the audience while he is mentally far away even being in the same room. “The pocket” of the couch is meant to draw the desire in which the “honest” part of his body has been placed and this part tries to connect out of people, tries to connect to the reality whether it is closed or opened.

this is a performance which share the same fantasy with the japanese author Edogawa Rampo, by coincidence, or commune human desire.

The Waiting Room

I would like to invite you to for an interview at The Waiting Room this Sunday, 17th of June.

The idea is that every guest gets to be interviewed by some (or all) of our 13 hosts/interviewers, one at a time. Every encounter is going to be unique: an intimate talk, a therapy session, an interview, an audition, an interrogation... you never know what to expect. The Waiting Room, where you wait between the interviews, becomes the space for encounters between the strangers, mixing up the impressions and exploring the social codes of behavior.

We already did this project at Direktorenhaus in Autumn 2010 and it was very exciting. This time we (myself and Diego Agullo) are co-organizing it together with Peter Stamer and Clement Layes at Flutgraben.

This time the hosts/interviewers will be ourselves, as well as Ana Monteiro, Isabel Lewis, Agatha Siniarska, Andrea Goetzke, Irina Mueller, Lea Martini, Gabriel Shalom, Gabriel von Loebell-Herberstein, Lan Hungh, Andre Wunstorf, Daniel Almgren.
