Valencia agree to sell Juan Mata to Chelsea

2011-08-21T22:32:00.000-07:00

Chelsea have agreed a fee with Spanish club Valencia to sign Juan Mata for a reported £23.5m.
The Stamford Bridge club said the deal was subject to the winger, 23, agreeing personal terms and passing a medical.
No fee has been officially disclosed but reports in Spain suggest the Blues are paying £23.5m.
"An agreement has been reached with Valencia CF for the transfer of midfielder Juan Manuel Mata," a statement on the Chelsea website said.
"The move is now subject to the player passing a medical and agreeing personal terms."
Valencia had confirmed the deal themselves earlier on Sunday.
After Chelsea's 2-1 win over West Brom, boss Andre Villas-Boas said: "He can add to any squad in the world."
Mata has been at Valencia since 2007 and as captain helped Spain win the Under-21 European Championship in the summer. He was also part of Spain's 2010 World Cup winning squad.
Villas-Boas has previously spoken of the need to recruit more midfielders and the club have also made bids for Tottenham's Luka Modric.

You can argue Mata brings something Chelsea have lacked since Arjen Robben left - a player with real acceleration who can put defenders on the back foot. I do not think it means an end to Chelsea's efforts to sign Luka Modric as, while Mata can play in the centre, I would be very surprised if he did for Chelsea. I would imagine he will play on the right with Florent Malouda on the left. He is creative and has two good feet, although he is predominantly left-footed. Mata is quite a modest and down-to-earth guy and can be a key player for Chelsea for years to come.

On Saturday after Chelsea's 2-1 win against West Brom Villa-Boas was questioned about Mata.
He refused to be drawn on whether any deal was close, but he said: "He's a good player, a very good player.
"He's not our player but he's an interesting player.
"His curriculum speaks for itself. He's a player who scores and assists and he can add to any squad in the world."
Mata joined Valencia from Real Madrid's youth team. Last season, the 23-year-old midfielder, who is 5ft 7in tall, scored eight goals to help Valencia to a third-place finish in the Primera Liga.
He was also part of Spain's 2010 World Cup-winning squad and captain of the under-21 team that won the European Championship this year.
If Mata leaves, Valencia will have sold all four of their World Cup winners, with Mata following David Villa (Barcelona), David Silva (Manchester City) and Raul Albiol (Real Madrid) out of the club.

Spanish players vote to strike over wage guarantees

2011-08-12T10:26:00.000-07:00

Fixtures in Spain's top two divisions face being postponed after the players' union said it would hold a strike.

Players want a guaranteed wage fund where they would be paid even if their clubs become insolvent, and games over the first two weekends are in jeopardy.

ANALYSIS

The root cause of the threatened strike is that many clubs in Spain pay their players several months in arrears. The only legal obligation clubs have to their players is to settle all their debts by June 30 at the end of every year and many don't even do this

Phil MinshullRead Phil's Spanish football blog here

"We are unanimous in our decision," said players' union president Luis Rubiales. "The league will not start until a new agreement has been signed."

The top division, La Liga, is set to start on the weekend of 20-21 August.

Second-tier club Hercules have struggled to pay some of their players recently, while Real Zaragoza applied for administration in the summer.

Flanked by Real Madrid keeper Iker Casillas, midfielder Xabi Alonso, Barcelona captain Carles Puyol and other internationals, Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE) chief Rubiales added: "We are behind all of Europe in this matter.

"Players from the first and second divisions have made the decision to call a strike for the first two matchdays of the season.

LA LIGA OPENING FIXTURES

Saturday, 20 August: Espanyol v Granada, Levante v Real Zaragoza, Villarreal v Sporting Gijon, Osasuna, Valencia
Sunday, 21 August: Rayo Vallecano v Mallorca, Racing Santander v Getafe, Real Madrid v Athletic Bilbao, Malaga v Barcelona, Real Betis v Sevilla
Monday, 22 August: Real Sociedad v Atletico Madrid

"The players have met with us and decided that enough is enough."

Last season a proposed strike was called off after players protested about the distribution of television money.

Champions Barcelona begin their defence of the title away at Malaga on Sunday 21 August, while Real Madrid host Athletic Bilbao.

Villarreal, who face Pep Guardiola's Barca side in the second round of matches, also have to contend with a Champions League qualifier against Danish side Odense either side of the opening weekend.

New home for Alexis Sanchez

2011-07-23T11:44:00.000-07:00

Benvingut Alexis Sánchez, a 22-year old winger slash all-purpose player capable, if his Copa America performances are anything to go by, of filling gaps in the front five. His transfer fee is a €26m deal with an additional €11.5m in performance-based variables while the contract itself is a five-year deal.
He’ll play on the wing, in the middle, and up front, but he’ll also get back on defence. At times during Chile’s recent match with Venezuela, he played almost too much defence in a desperate attempt to get the ball back and score the equalizing goal. His tenacity was remarkable and at one point he raced from Venezuela’s box back to just outside his own to thwart a vinotinto attack. Unfortunately he was therefore out of position for the counterattack. It’s hard to fault him, however, for making up for his teammates’ own lack of positional discipline. There will be moments, no doubt, when his Barça teammates require him to dash in to cover some breakaway and we’ll all sing his praises if he pulls a Mascherano and keeps Bendtner from dashing our Champions League hopes in the final minute.
Whatever your thoughts about him, he’s most assuredly not a regular goal scorer. He scored 12 in Serie A this year, 4 of them in a single game, but has only scored 21 at Udinese in 3 years and 50 some in his whole career. There are players who would envy such numbers, but few attackers would; judging from comments around the internet, there is a significant number of cules who believe, like they believed with Ibrahimovic and Villa before him, that Alexis will score 30+ goals in his first year. You can put it out of your mind because it won’t happen. Certainly not in the first year and I’d bet not at all in his career.
Interestingly, according to Opta, Sánchez received the most fouls of any player in Serie A last year: 115. Generally this shows a willingness to take on players and the gifts to beat them and force them into bad tackles, which is good. He’s certainly fast - or perhaps he should be described as “quick” instead - and he’s got good dribbling skills, which should make his wing play effective. He’ll get plenty of games, especially with Bojan heading to Roma on a 2-year deal (more on that at the bottom of this column), but he shouldn’t be considered a starter from the beginning. He has to earn his place in the system through the kind of hard work that got him where he is.
I’ve previously called the signing a classic case of Barça over-paying and I stand by that assessment, but I do not believe there was any other way to get Sánchez if, indeed, Guardiola was hell-bent on getting him. I should also note that “overpaying” is a very subjective statement and it depends on what you consider the real value of a player (“whatever the market dictates is the real value of a player” is one way to look at it) and how you adapt to changing policies, inflation, and the rise of the global game. It would be a mistake to compare the transfer fees of 2 players from different years - is Alexis Sánchez 3 times the player that Yaya Touré was in 2008? Or is he just 1.1 times the player Touré was in 2010? If we end up paying all €37.5m for Sánchez, is he really a more valuable player than Dani Alves, who came in for €32m?
I’m not sure which squad number Sánchez will occupy, but the 9 is free thanks to Bojan’s glorified loan move to Roma that brings in €12m for Barça. What I mean is, Bojan goes to Roma while Roma loans us €12m; there is a buy-back clause of €13m that must be enacted in 2013 unless Roma stumps up €40m for Bojan (or, effectively €28m on top of the 12 they have already loaned to Barça). No matter what happens in the next two years with the little guy - and I hope great things happen for him - I sincerely doubt that Roma will exercise that option. And if they do, he’ll have to be worth it and we’ll be losing out on a fantastic player.
Would the perfect situation be that Bojan gets good enough to be worth €25m or so but not €28m and so Roma forgoes their option and we get a 22-year old €25m rated player back for, effectively, €1m? You could call it €13m and it’s still a great deal. Good luck to you, Bojan! Score some goals, win some trophies, etc. Just not against us.
Welcome Alexis and goodbye Bojan. It is not the dawning of a new era, but it is certainly the dawning of a new season and it’s just about time to get really, really excited.

Bojan join to Roma

2011-07-22T10:51:00.000-07:00

Barcelona have confirmed they have agreed to sell forward Bojan Krkic to Roma for €12 million.

Bojan Krkic

The deal includes an obligatory buy-back clause that would see Barca re-sign the player at the end of the 2012-13 season for €13 million, but Roma can nullify the clause if they pay a further €28 million.
Bojan, 20, was one of the best rated young talents to emerge from the Barcelona academy and made his debut for the club in the 2007-08 season, but he has found his first-team opportunities restricted of late.
At Roma, he will join up with former Barcelona B coach Luis Enrique.
"It's not an easy decision - it's a bittersweet situation for me," Bojan told a press conference at the Camp Nou. "I was at this club for a long time. This is the start of a new era.
"It wasn't possible to stay here, so I'm pleased that another club believes in me. The last year, there wasn't much belief in me, but I'm proud to have been part of a group that became the best team in the world.
"Not getting the chance to play in the Champions League final, for the second time in a row, is one of the reasons I am leaving. I hope that I can rediscover my enjoyment of football, which is something I had lost over the last year in particular."
Asked about the prospect of returning to the club in 2013, Bojan said: "You never know. It will depend on me and how I perform.
"Luis Enrique has been crucial in my choice. I'm grateful to him. Guardiola is the best coach in the world, but of course I don't agree with some of the decisions he has made."

2011-06-07T19:46:00.000-07:00

Argentina as well as Nigeria, both worldwide groups in the center associated with a match-fixing analysis through Fifa, tend to be to satisfy one another once again within Bangladesh within Sept.

Fifa tend to be looking into large wagering upon a late goal becoming obtained within the match, that Nigeria received 4-1 by having an under-strength Argentina aspect rating from the doubtful penalty within the 8th moment associated with injury-time.

Both groups also provide a good contract in order to perform one another within Dhaka upon 6 Sept, however organisers of this online game demand they've absolutely no reference to the match within Abuja a week ago which Argentina tend to be caught to create the full-strength aspect such as Lionel Messi towards the online game.

The actual Bangladesh online game may be organized through Indian-based firm Celebrity Management Group, who've additionally setup a match in between Argentina as well as Venezuela within Kolkata upon two Sept. Bhaswar Goswami, Celeb Administration Group's professional overseer, informed Push Organization Activity: "We are looking to raise about $5m (£3.04m) from the game against Venezuela and around $4m from the match against Nigeria in Dhaka. The full-strength Argentina team will come, including Lionel Messi, we have a contract which mentions all the names."

Goswami stated he or she had been worried about this news which FIFA tend to be to research final week's match. He or she additional: "We had nothing to do with last week's match, we only operate in Asia, but we heard about the news earlier this week. It's very worrying and these things should not have happened but of course we have no control over it - Fifa is looking into it and can take action.

"We are organising these matches in association with the local federations. The referees for our matches are being arranged by the Indian football federation and I hope they will use officials from the Asian Football Confederation."

Within final week's online game, a wide array associated with wagers had been all of a sudden positioned within the last 5 min's associated with regular period with regard to an additional goal to become scored. Chaibou had been additionally the state from an additional complement below analysis through Fifa – an amiable in between Bahrain along with a 'fake' Togo aspect final Sept. Musa Amadu, the actual assistant common associated with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) stated they'd particularly asked for Chaibou for that Abuja complement. He or she stated: "Chaibou is a respected referee in Africa and has officiated in many international matches, and we always try and use referees from adjoining countries. We had no concerns over his history, and if there was anything to suggest that he was not honest and competent to officiate in the game we would not have appointed him. This is an unwanted issue because this was our best result in international football."

Who will fill Fulham and Villa's hot seats?

2011-06-05T12:39:00.000-07:00

Peter Odemwingie to Arsenal | Jordan Henderson and Phil Jones to Liverpool | Wilson Palacios to Napoli and Leandro Damião to Spurs

Before we start, a minute's silence for the death of Mark Hughes's career.
Stop laughing. It's not funny. Not funny at all.
Although the Daily Mail, as on the ball as ever, reports that Hughes is free to talk to Aston Villa, in the same way that Piers Morgan is free to stop Being Piers Morgan, the Mill knows that's not the case. Randy Lerner wants nothing to do with the manager who immediately activated a break clause in his Fulham contract upon hearing that Gérard Houllier had left Villa Park. Only to find out that Villa have absolutely no intention of hiring the man who spent £18m on Roque Santa Cruz. Hughes will spend the rest of the day on the phone to Mohamed Al Fayed trying to convince him that whole break-clause thingy was just a practical joke and he's not really leaving Fulham and he'll be in bright and early on Monday morning and, oh God, he's just gone and bought a house in Aston and what the hell is he going to tell the wife now?
So anyway there's a job going at Villa, with Martin Jol, Steve McClaren and Roberto Martínez in the frame. Carlo Ancelotti wants to go to a club in the Champions League though. Chelsea sounds fun. Fulham also need a new manager now – ~~oh Sparky~~! – and Villa's former manager Martin O'Neill is the early frontrunner. Fulham are also eyeing up Jol and McClaren, not to mention Nice Chris Hughton and Nice Gianfranco Zola. But not Mark Hughes. No one wants Mark Hughes.
Bored with repeatedly linking Cesc Fábregas to Barcelona, this morning the tabloids have broken with tradition and are ignoring the story completely.
Arsenal have told Real Madrid that they won't be getting Cesc for anything less than £54m.
If Fábregas does go, Arsène Wenger, lurching deeper and deeper into self-parody, will spend a whopping £4m to bring West Bromwich Albion's Peter Odemwingie to the Emirates. Showboating dandy Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will also be snapped up for £10m from Southampton. If all that doesn't stop ungrateful supporters complaining about 6% price hikes in season tickets, the Mill doesn't know what will.
Meanwhile Robin van Persie has told Chelsea to "shut the fuck up". That'll be a two-match ban for Wayne Rooney then. The Dutchman, exhibiting the sort of self-awareness that would shame Sepp Blatter, is fed up with Chelsea's players always complaining about referees. Van Persie is managed by Arsène Wenger. Van Persie, of course, did his bit for the Respect campaign by calling his sending-off against Barcelona in March "a total joke". Van Persie wasn't finished there – he also hit out at Barcelona for trying to get opposition players booked, presumably for tackles like this.
Impressed by England's stunning World Cup last summer, Kanny King Kenny wants to build a nucleus of home-grown players at Liverpool. Well it's better than building an army of clones. On the way to Anfield are Sunderland's Jordan Henderson for £20m and Blackburn's Phil Jones for £15m. Smell you later suckers, Number 19 is in the bag. Dalglish will face competition for Jones from Arsenal and Tottenham, though. If Henderson does go to Liverpool, Steve Bruce will use the money to bring in social networking's Darron Gibson and Wes Brown from Manchester United.
Wheeling and dealing's Harry Redknapp is in the market for some more players. So what's new? They're not having much luck though, Internacional rejecting a £10.5m bid for their Brazilian international Leandro Damião. If Tottenham can't get him, they'll move for up-and-coming tyro Didier Drogba. Wilson Palacios's move to Napoli has stalled, though, with Spurs demanding £15m for the Honduran midfielder.
Alexis "Lawrie" Sánchez has told Manchester City he doesn't want to leave Udinese. So there. Real Madrid's manager José Mourinho has told City he won't give them £14m for Emmanuel Adebayor, last seen stomping around the Camp Nou karate-chopping any Barcelona player that dared to move. Everton's David Moyes is closing in on Germany's Miroslav Klose, who's very good, although he'll be a bit miffed if he ends up signing Bayern Munich's Miroslav Klose, who's very bad. Harry Redknapp is also "aware of Klose's situation". Of course he is. West Ham's Demba Ba could also be on his way to Everton, assuming he can be bothered to scrawl his name on a contract.
Swansea have offered Watford £3m for their striker, Danny Graham, who sounds like he should be auditioning for a role in a Guy Ritchie film. QPR are keeping tabs on former Liverpool and Leeds gadfly Harry Kewell and fellow Australian Lucas Neill, and will use the presence of the Walkabout in Shepherds Bush to sway the pair, who are both available on free transfers.

Didier Drogba to Milan?

2011-06-05T12:35:00.000-07:00

Palermo reject £33m bid for Pastore? | Higuaín available for £15m? | Palacios off to Napoli?

Guus Hiddink is ready to sign up for Chelsea's title chase, but might have to do without Didier Drogba, who has emerged as Milan's £10m-ish top striking target, narrowly ahead of Emmanuel Adebayor. And he might also have to do without Javier Pastore, with Palermo turning down Chelsea's £33m offer for the Argentina winger. "The price is £44m," said the Italian club's president, Maurizio Zamparini. "There are five or six clubs interested."
Adebayor's current and former clubs, Manchester City and Arsenal, are among the English sides intrigued by rumours that Real Madrid are ready to sell Gonzalo Higuaín for a knock-down £15m. But at a fraction of an inch over 6ft the fairly averagely tall Argentinian is unlikely to meet Arsène Wenger's publicly announced primary aim in the transfer market: to ensure "bigger variety in the size of his squad". A boon for players who are either particularly short or particularly tall — perhaps Peter Crouch won't have to leave north London this summer after all.
Gérard Houllier has agreed a pay-off to leave Aston Villa, estimated at £2m by the Express, £2.5m by the Mirror and £5m by the Sun. But Fulham, current employers of Randy Lerner's top target, Mark Hughes, have told him to clear off. Lerner, that is, not Hughes. Although, having said that, according to the Mail, Hughes is a free agent after a break clause in his contract kicked in on Wednesday night.
Dimitar Berbatov has promised never to leave Old Trafford, insisting: "I will stay and I will fight for the 20th title. If I were a quitter I would never have made it this far." Equally unlikely to leave Manchester is City's German flop Jérôme Boateng. Bayern Munich hoped to tempt the defender back to his homeland for £7m, but have been shocked by City's demand for an additional £11m, which would give them a 50% profit on the player they signed last summer and hardly played all season. Presumably City's chief valuation officer lives in an alternate universe where a bizarre succession of niggly injuries actually increase a player's worth.
Inevitable Tottenham rumours of the day: Wilson Palacios is to sign for Napoli, either on loan or for £7m or £8m or £15m, depending on which paper you read. "The next few days will be key for my future," the midfielder said. Harry Redknapp wants to bring in the much-hyphenated Rennes defender Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik, who the French side value at £2m per hyphen and is also a target for managerless Villa.
Liverpool have identified Charlie Adam, James McCarthy and Jordan Henderson as prime targets to rejuvenate their midfield, with Wigan's chairman, Dave Whelan, admitting of McCarthy that "in the end, of course, [we will] have to let him go, there's no question about that". The speculation has inevitably led to massive transfer fees being demanded for all three players, with Liverpool particularly upset about the "ridiculous" (according to the Mail's source) price tag placed on Henderson, rumoured to be as high as £20m, by Sunderland, who want to totally rebuild their squad and need some extra cash to do so. Wigan, incidentally, think they can sign the Almería midfielder Hernán Bernardello for £3m, but have had a £2m bid for their former loanee Ali al-Habsi turned down by Bolton. And Blackpool might want big money for Adam but they'll get nowt for David Vaughan, who is a big-wage target for Birmingham.
Reading are all set to be punished for their failure to win promotion by seeing a veritably player exodus, with winger Jimmy Kébé on QPR's radar and prolific striker Shane Long currently being pursued by Celtic, Everton and Newcastle. Everton, though, are among the clubs — also including Sunderland — attempting to snaffle Demba Ba from West Ham, while Newcastle's scouts have also reported favourably on the Toulouse full-back Cheikh M'Bengue. So favourably, in fact, that the club bid £5.4m for the player on Wednesday, though the offer was promptly rejected. The Hammers might replace Ba with perennial Big Sam favourite El-Hadji Diouf, currently of Blackburn.
Talking of Blackburn, bidding on eBay for the Ewood Park penalty spot from which Wayne Rooney scored Manchester United's title-winning goal was about to pass £1m when we went to virtual press, though it is not yet known how many bids have been put in as a joke by bored nine-year-olds. Talking of Manchester United, they have put their fourth-choice right-back, Wes Brown, up for sale.
Norwich are preparing a new offer for their top transfer target, Millwall's ex-Stevenage striker Steve Morison, closer to the £3m the Lions demand than the £2.6m they had rejected. But fellow promotees Swansea are set to lose midfielder Darren Pratley for nothing, with the 26-year-old believed to have agreed a Bosman switch to Bolton. The Trotters also want a new striker, with Vitória Guimarães' alliterative Tiago Targino apparently high on their list.
Fulham have offered £1m for Bournemouth's 19-year-old striking prodigy Danny Ings, while Peterborough want his team-mate Jason Pearce for half that amount. By the time Ings arrives at Craven Cottage he might find Stephen Kelly has moved on, with the out-of-favour full-back insisting: "I want to play all the time." Of course his current employers have nothing against him playing all the time, so long as what he's playing isn't football.

Samir Nasri refuses to rule out a switch to Manchester United

Samir Nasri refuses to rule out a switch to Manchester United

Samir Nasri has revealed he wants to find out whether Manchester United's interest in him is genuine, with Arsenal talks on hold

Samir Nasri has risked fracturing his relationship with Arsène Wenger by casting doubt over his readiness to sign a new contract at Arsenal this summer, with the France international suggesting he is also keen to discover whether Manchester United's interest in him is "concrete".
Wenger conceded last week that negotiations between the club and the player, a £15.8m signing from Marseille in the summer of 2008, are currently at an impasse over the financial terms on offer. Nasri is entering the final year of his contract at the Emirates Stadium and with three years of Premier League experience behind him, would be an attractive addition to United's option. Speculation that the champions would lodge a bid has been fanned by Patrice Evra urging the attacking midfielder to move to Old Trafford.
That prompted Wenger to say last week: "One thing's for sure, we're not selling him to Manchester United." Yet Nasri himself, when interviewed on TF1's Telefoot, appeared more open to the prospect. "Let's find out if their interest is true first, and then we'll talk about it," he said.
"I don't know if I will sign a new contract. Anyway, the discussions are on-going. For the moment, I don't want to think about this. We will speak about it after the match with Poland [on Tuesday]. Do I want to go to United? We should see if their interest is real and if it is concrete first."
