Yes, yes. I've finally made the move to Wordpress.

I will always miss my blogging roots (sorta. Blogger kinda sucks now comparatively) but I've wanted to move for SO long. It's been a constant back and forth because it's not free (money, you know how it goes). But, I finally decided, what the heck. You never know till you try, right?

I know I've been absent from blogging lately, partly due to my schedule, but partly due to the fact that I just wasn't happy with my blog. I kept trying to update it and it was difficult and annoying and there were quite a few things I was unable to do. At least with free templates. My lack of excitement about my little corner of the internet led to me not being motivated to write anything because I wasn't proud of my blog and that's a problem.

But, thanks to Ashley at Nose Graze (who you should totally stalk....I mean follow btw) I have a wonderful new Wordpress blog. I used her hosting site (BookHost) and so far, so good! Her Ultimate Book Blogger plugin alone is amazing and so worth it.

But, I'm still trying to figure things out and get it all nice and pretty for y'all. I've done the designs myself and am still working on making it perfect. However, I'm very happy with what I have up so far. It'll be a few days most likely before I start posting (besides an introductory post), but feel free to check it out!

Oh, For the Love of Books!

It'll take a few days for bloglovin followers to be switched over to the new blog but don't fret! It'll happen seamlessly :)

I'm so excited to get back in the blogging universe and just have fun with it. And, hopefully, y'all will to.

The One Where I Introduce Myself for Armchair BEA 2015

It's that time of year again. The time when book bloggers, authors and all bookish fans get together in the NYC for the great meet and greet known as BEA. For those of us not lucky enough (read: poor college student) to attend the real life version of BEA, there is the great internet version known as Armchair BEA so that we unlucky folk can get a taste of the great big BEA in our own little corner of the internet.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself: How long have you been blogging? Where are you from? How did you get into blogging?

I actually started blogging wayyyyyy back in January of 2012 (I feel so old at this moment....). I accidentally came across one while looking for a book recommendation online and just kept finding more and more. I thought it seemed like a lot of fun, the community is great, and I just like to spread my opinion, so I created it on a whim. Even though I've had this blog for a good long while I've taken a lot of lengthy.....breaks. When I first started blogging I never realized how time-consuming it could be (I'm sure many other bloggers can understand). A lot of these breaks happen during the school year because with full credit loads and work, time is almost nonexistent and Netflix is all-consuming (curse you NETFLIX *shakes fist* okay, not really, you're amazing I love you). I always try to get back into it, but time-management is not my forte and unfortunately blogging gets pushed to the wayside. However, as always, I try and restart and get back into it. I enjoy it. I really do. And even though I may not always be the most consistent, it's still a ton of fun and I enjoy coming back to it and getting back into the community.

A little bit about myself:

I'm an Army brat so I'm not really "from" anywhere, but everywhere. I'm currently blogging from GA but go to school in VA. I'm a HUGE movie lover. Some of my favorites? Gladiator, LOTR, Harry Potter, any war movie, superhero movies (a la avengers), Lion King, Mulan, Aladdin, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, the Princess Bride, Major Payne, and my absolute favorite comedy - MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL! If you love that movie, we can be automatic friends. And don't get me started on TV (see above paragraph for obsession with Netflix). I also love all things shopping and fashion. Too bad I have so few funds and that my love of clothes competes with my love of books. And traveling! Oh how I love to explore the world! I've visited and lived all over and can't choose favorites. Each place holds a special place in my heart. I also absolutely love animals. I wanted to be a zoologist until I learned it was pretty useless unless I had a PhD. Too much money. Also, too much science. But I have 2 wonderful, adorable, and annoying pugs. Gotta love em. I instead turned to Psychology. Still a science, but a science I enjoy so much more and only need a Masters for. So, still a ton of money, but at least it's something I enjoy.

2. What is your favorite genre and why?

Yes. I'm a HUGE fantasy junky. I love the escapism aspect of fantasy novels. I love to find a new world and get lost in it. The creativity and imagination behind fantasy books is like no other. I'm always a sucker for magical realms, magical powers and creatures, warring countries, action-packed fighting scenes, assassins, thieves, chosen ones, political intrigue and all sorts of weaponry. Give me a high fantasy any day of the weak.

3. What book are you reading right now?

Crown of Embers by Rae Carson.

Phenomenal. This is actually a re-read for me in preparation of the last book and it's amazing. I forgot just how much I absolutely love this book (and series). And what better book to be reading during this armchair BEA where the theme is diversity? The main character does not fit the typical beautiful, skinny girl mold but must deal with emotional eating. Though she's a tough character, her strength in not in her skill with weapons but her intelligent and strategic mind. And this takes place in a Middle Eastern or African inspired realm that is beautifully crafted and magical.

Read it.

4. What book are you most looking forward to reading this summer?

Queen of Shadows (Throne of Glass #4)

5. What is one book everyone should read?

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

If you're a fantasy lover and love kick-butt women, hot guys, political and royal intrigue, assassins, emotional blows to the heart, feelings, feelings, and more feelings, pure awesomeness, tons of action, fae, awesome bad guys you hate, magic, and more awesomeness and hotness, then read this (and that's a really horrible description that doesn't do this the slightest justice). This is one of the few series where it actually gets better as it goes along. Book 3? Destroyed me, put me back together, said "PSYCH!!", and destroyed me again.

I loved it.

Top 10 2014 Releases I Meant to Read, but Didn't

These are books I either own and never got around to, or books I don't own but wanted to read.

1. The Blood of Olympus: I own it and refuse to read it. I DON'T WANT IT TO ENDDDD!

2. Red Rising: So much hype. So many reservations.

3. Sea of Shadows: FANTASY AWESOMENESS! ANIMALS! But, I heard some...iffy reviews and I admit it turned me off. Library?

4. Death Sworn: One word: Assassins. But I also heard not so good things about this one so......

5. The Murder Complex: Yet another one in which I had high expectations yet seems to fall flat. I'll get around to it....eventually.

6. The Midnight Thief: Loved the prequel I got for review. Heard some rather boring things about this book from people I trust so I'm waiting for book 2 to see if it gets better.

7. Talon: Why haven't I read this yet? I read the first couple chapters and was intrigued. I would've been happier had it not been urban fantasy. But dragons!

8. Suspicion: I got this one for review through Netgalley and just haven't gotten around to it yet. I hope to read it soon though.

9. Mortal Heart: I own it but I don't want it to end! What a great series! ASSASSINS!

10. The Vault of Dreamers (the picture wouldn't work): I got this for review and really should read it. I read one chapter.....not that I didn't like it, just wan't feeling it. I'll pick it up again soon.

I used to keep up with them a lot more but not this year. The One with My 2015 Challenges

Even though my track record with challenges is....lackluster to say the least, I still really enjoy participating in them. While I don't take too much stock in the challenges, they are lots of fun and can help me when I'm choosing what to read. However, I'm a total mood reader and won't let these challenges force me to read a book because I feel I have too. How horrible would that be? I usually do it to help keep track of books I read and connect with other bloggers. And they're fun (even though I suck at them). These are some of the challenges ~~that will kill me~~ I'm going to partake in this year.

Challenge: Goodreads 2015 Reading Challenge

Host: Goodreads

Goal: 52 books

I've participated in the Goodreads reading challenge every year since I've found this website. It's a great way to help keep track of all the books I've read that year. I'm not a fast reader and lately it's a miracle if I even read at all (I know, shame on me). I've decided to set my goal at 52 books which means 1 book a week. There are going to be times that I can read more (school breaks, slow school weeks), and other times where I have very limited time. However, I think this is an achievable goal. Wish me luck! I'm going to need it.

Challenge: Fairytale Challenge

Goal: Magic Mirror -- 5-9 books

The lovely Mel is taking over this challenge from the previous host Debz. Her obvious love of fairy tales makes this the perfect challenge for this first time host! You got this girl!

As for the challenge itself, I only participated in this last year and only met half my goal (which was incredibly low to begin with). This year, because I know of at least 4 books I want to read that are retellings, I decided to level up to a whopping 5-9. So daring, I know.

These are the four books I want to read for this challenge:

1. Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge (Beauty and the Beast retelling) - This one will actually be a re-

read but I'm curious to know why I knocked down the rating. I remember devouring it. This is

what I get for not writing a review immediately after finishing. By the way, I thought this was a

standalone but on Goodreads it says it's part of a series. Interesting.

2. Crimson Bound by Rosamund Hodge (Little Red Riding Hood retelling) - Beautiful cover, girl

who can kick butt, kingdoms and princes, hate turned love relationship possibility = my cup of tea.

3. Fairest (The Lunar Chronicles #0.1) by Marissa Meyer (Evil queen retelling?) - Since evil queens

are (almost) always part of a fair tale, I figured this one could count and I'm SO excited. This chick

is crazy psycho. My inner psychologist can't wait to understand why that is.

4. Winter (The Lunar Chronicles #4) by Marissa Meyer - *FLAILS* OMGOMGOMGOMG! So, not

gonna lie, Winter seemed a bit....odd to me in her cameo in Cress. However, this series is

phenomenal and I have absolutely no doubt that Marissa Meyer will once again blow me away.

5. No idea. I'll probably re-read Cress (because it was PHENOMENAL! THORNE! READ IT

NOWWWWWW).

Challenge: Flights of Fantasy Reading Challenge

Host: Alexa Loves Books & Hello, Chelly

Goal: 15 books

I was so lucky to stumble upon this challenge because I LOVE fantasy. Like, ridiculously so. It is my go-to genre, the best of the best, the most awesome of all that is awesome! Also, since you can set your own goal and it's my favorite genre, I figured it'd be relatively easy to complete this challenge. So there's that.

Ha. HAHAHAHA. I'm really shooting for the stars here. But I've got a horrible ratio (mainly because I got approved for books but forgot to download o_O) but anything helps. And, let's face it, I'm totally going to request more.

Challenge: 365 Days of Reading YA

Goal: Whatever I feel like.

I'm doing this one purely for the absolutely AMAZING graphic. WHAT?!? WHO TOOK THE TIME TO DO THIS?!? Regardless, it's awesome. I'm really just joining this one because it gives me great ideas about what to read throughout the year. It's basically a set your own goal. Totally my speed. Will I complete all these challenges? Well, I like to think I could, but I'm a realist. So... no. Ha! But that's okay. If I do, awesome. If not, awesome. Basically, if I read, I consider it an accomplishment. Besides, I like to think of these challenges more as guidelines about what to read, rather than actual ~~rules~~ goals.

New Year, New Blog (sort of?).

First off,

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

May 2015 shower you with blessings (aka lots of books) and joy (also meaning books)!

Now, on to the purpose of this post. New blog! Okay, not as in an actual "new" blog, but more of a reboot or restart. 2014 was...well quite frankly it was basically a failure. As I'm sure you've noticed I was absent most of this year. You came to visit the blog and crickets started sounding in the background. I could give you a ton of excuses for why, but I feel like I've done that way to much (with all my other "I promise I'm coming back" posts). Instead, I'm just going to jump right in.

Time management is one thing I am not good at. I NEED to set goals or have deadlines. If I do, I'm fine. So, cue a New Year's Resolution: to work on time management. A way to help? Keeping up this blog of course! Not to mention I've been dying to get back to it. Blogging is such a wonderful thing and I miss is dearly! But, along with getting back to blogging, I want to get back to blogging how I first started out: when it was fun. Sure I want to plan, but I also want to just kind of go along with the flow and just have fun with it which is something I believe I've lost sight of.

So basically this post is just to let y'all know that I'm planning to reboot Oh, For the Love of Books! *cue flailing*

I think I'm going to try and freshen up the blog's look to kind of help me jumpstart (if y'all have any ideas PLEASE let me know). The first couple posts will be some recap of 2014 and looking forward to 2015. I know I'm a bit late to the race (since most other bloggers did that at the end of 2014 -- still weird to say that o_O), but I think it's a good, easy way to get back in the game.

I can't guarantee that this won't get pushed to the wayside as it has in the past, but I can guarantee that I will try my hardest to keep this up and enjoy it.
I really missed y'all and can't wait to start talking books again!

It's the end of an era.

Something I both dreaded and anticipated. Whenever it comes to the end of a series, I feel this way. I needed to know how this book ended. Yet, at the same time, I couldn't image what would happen. Would I relish in the ending? Would it just suffice? Or would I loathe it with the passion of a thousand fiery suns?

What words can I possibly use to describe Ruin and Rising. It tore my heart in two, then mended it together. It was full of death, longing, and loneliness, yet also so full of hope, friendship and strength. The world that Bardugo has created is a cruel one, a broken one. Yet, there is always that little glimmer of hope for a better world.

The characters, both new and old, were full of depth and heart. I laughed, cried, and grew frustrated alongside them. The main characters from books past continued to grow into amazing people. While the secondary characters were all those we've met before, we learn so much more about them and they truly come to light. Alina and Mal are no longer alone. Some of these characters I never would've thought would be brought to the forefront, but I adored them all. I felt their despair deep in my soul, but also saw the hope and strength these characters exuded. Though different, they all came together for what matters most to them: a new Ravka.

Alina, a orphan girl suddenly thrust into power, yet still so alone. She may not have always had physical strength, but she had strength of heart. She grew so much throughout this series. From a young, lonely girl, to a powerful grisha to a woman willing to sacrifice in order to make the world a better place.

Mal, who has always been, and always will be there for Alina. A "normal" boy who, like Alina, wants what is best for Ravka. A boy willing to sacrifice his own happiness in order to achieve it. A boy who loved a girl for who she was, not what power she possessed. Unfailingly loyal to the end.

Nikolai, the gloriously good-looking prince. Cocky, arrogant, snarky and ~~most importantly~~ handsome. A swashbuckling privateer. A suave prince. A future king. But he's so much more than that. Through all of his outer arrogance and sarcasm, he truly cares about Ravka. He sees how broken it is and, being the true prince he is, wishes to see Ravka become the glorious country she should be.

And the Darkling.

A villain with so much depth that my heart broke for him. He was so alone. A boy with power that no one should have, and no one to share it with. What he did was cruel, cold, and calculating. Yet, all I could see was the lonely little boy who just wanted to be loved.

And the story itself....I had absolutely no idea what to expect. And this book threw me for many loops. It contained heart-break, death, depth and shocking discoveries, but always with a little glimpse of hope. I can't say too much without giving it away, but Bardugo created a wonderfully complex world, a brilliant story, and characters worth admiring. And the "After" chapter? Beautiful.

So, thank you Miss. Bardugo.

Thank you for creating a wonderfully complex world. A world that is far from perfect, yet so lush and beautiful. Your words contained a magic of their own. Thank you for a story that contains so much sadness, yet so much goodness. Thank you for creating characters with such depth. Characters who didn't always make the right decision, yet pulled through anyway. Thank you for giving me a villain I could feel sorry for. A villain so ~~mysteriously delicious~~ full of depth that I could understand the reasoning behind his cruelty. And thank you, THANK YOU, for giving me

Wow. Basically August was nonexistent on the blog. I blame it on my unexpected lack of internet (see above). But, instead of bemoaning my lack of posts for August, I'll let you know the awesomeness that is coming up in September.

First. A review and GIVEAWAY! Well, the giveaway isn't the book (though that may change between now and then), but it is related to the book. So jump for joy!

Also, look for my reviews of the Throne of Glass series. Unfortunately, I got behind on reading that series. I had originally wanted the reviews for the first 2 books posted before now with my Heir of Fire review being posted today in order to correlate with the release. Unfortunately, life happened and I haven't yet gotten around to Heir of Fire (I'm dying on the inside - I must know what happens!) but am planning on getting around to it within the next week or two. So, even though I haven't read it, I know it'll be amazing and am about to shamelessly promote it.

Top 10 Books I Really Want to Read But Don't Own Yet

So I could've easily made a whole list of books that aren't out yet that I would give up my first born for (I kid....possibly). But, I realized that there are a lot of books, especially series, that I haven't yet finished and would really love to. So, this list is split in half. The first half consists of book series that I've started, but don't yet have the final books. The second half consists of books coming out in the future that I'm incredibly psyched for.

Already Released

1. Allegiant (Divergent #3) by Veronica Roth

I read Divergent when it first came out a long time ago. In between waiting for the next in the series, I found new books to read. Which means this series was left by the wayside. Though I still haven't read Insurgent (don't kill me!), I own that one whereas I don't own Allegiant. I plan on getting around to reading it....eventually.

2. The Bitter Kingdom (Fire and Thorns #3) by Rae Carson

Guysssss this series! AHHHHH! So good! And HECTOR?! *Swoon*

I can't believe I haven't gotten around to the final book yet! I'm actually going to reread the whole series to get all the feels (and lots of Hector).

3. Deception (Defiance #2) by C.J. Redwine

I read Defiance a while ago after the raves from fellow bloggers and I remember loving it. Too bad I didn't write a review for it :/ Anywho, I also plan on rereading this soon now that the whole trilogy is out!

4. Sacrifice (Legacy #3) by Cayla Kluver

This series is...interesting. As you can tell from my review of the first book, Legacy, my feelings were definitely mixed. And....I actually never finished the 2nd book....but I plan to, I promise! Again, like book 1, I absolutely loathed it and loved it. The reason I didn't finish it isn't because it wasn't good, but because I was absolutely terrified of how the ending would come about. At this point I hated Alera and Narian and the people I liked were in awful situations. So, I set it down choosing to be blissfully ignorant of how the book seemed to be going and instead make up a nice, happy ending in my own head. I plan on shattering those notions soon though to finish the 2nd book so I can get to this one. It's only taken me 3 years. Not long at all....Baby steps. Baby steps.

5. Fuse (Pure #2) by Julianna Baggott

So this is yet another series I started way back when and never finished. Pure was incredibly dark and raw and brilliant. It's a wretched dystopia that I was dying to understand. Unfortunately, I just never got around to getting my hands on the 2nd book and this series fell to the wayside. It's definitely one I plan on delving into in the future.

6. The Orphan Queen by Jodi Meadows

Moving past her name, this book sounds amazing. She's a princess, a spy, and a threat?1 Trifecta of awesomeness! Also, the Black Knife (aka hot man?) sounds mysterious and intriguing. Sign me up!

7. The Young Elites by Marie Lu

OMG!!! I've been waiting for this one forever. Well, maybe not forever, per se, but pretty darn close! It sounds so dark and magical and has hot men. And Adelina sounds like an anti-hero you can't help but feel for. Not to mention its blurbed as "X-men meets Assassin's Creed 2 meets Game of Thrones". I CAN WAIT NO LONGER!!!!

8. Shadow and Scale (Seraphina #2) by Rachel Hartman

Seraphina was absolutely stunning. Brilliantly done, captivating, and there were DRAGONS. I've been waiting for news on this book and it's finally here and sounds phenomenal! IT ONLY TOOK 3 YEARS!

9. The Blood of Olympus (The Heroes of Olympus #5) by Rick Riordan

WLEFJWOEIFJWOEFIJWODF!!!! IT'S THE END!!!! I DON'T WANT IT TO ENDDDDDD! PERCABETHHHHHHH!!! EVERYONE ELSE!!!! LEOOOOOOOO!

10. Throne of Glass series

Okay, so I'm totally cheating on this one because I technically own up through Heir of Fire, but they are eARCs and I want the real thing. I want these beauties sitting on my bookshelf so I can stare adoringly at them. They are brilliant and CHAOLLLLL!

Okay, so another cheat. Sue me. But I can't wait to learn all about Levana's backstory. I love learning about how people become who they are and why they do what they do (psychology lover here), so this is basically perfection. Also, it's like book-length which makes me happy. Yay!

ALIVEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

Yes, I'm sure that most of you probably thought something horrible happened to me since I basically became nonexistent over the past couple weeks. Sorry. But I have a good explanation. I promise. And it's a doozy.....

I had no internet.

Shocker, I know! How, oh how, did I live before the wondrous internet deemed me worthy of its time? These past couple weeks of lack of internet have really given me time to take a step back and figure out my priorities. And I've realized by priorities include Netflix. #NoShame.
And blogging. Oh how I missed you blogging!

See, I didn't know that I wasn't going to have internet, else I may have scheduled stuff (just kidding, when do I ever schedule posts?). I was planning on taking a couple days off because I was moving to my new apartment, but I hadn't realized my roommate hadn't had internet hooked up yet. I said no big deal because I thought I could set it up when I got there and they'd come the next day. Little did I know that I wouldn't be able to get an appointment for them to set it up till 2 weeks later. Longest. 2 weeks. EVER. A bit sad to be quite honest, but once school started I needed it. The first week, not to bad. I could live without internet. But week 2? Seriously, I had e-mails to write, classes to add/drop, applications to send and no internet. I was losing it. There's only one provider for this apartment complex and lots of students needing internet moving in. It was a fight to get it first. Lesson learned.

And you think I would've taken all this free time to read. Yeah....no. For some reason, when I have too much time on my hands, I get nothing accomplished, including reading. Don't worry, I'm working on it. Instead I got addicted to Gilmore Girls that my roommate had on DVD. Gah.

But, I now have internet. Which means back to blogging. And reading (here's to looking at you Heir of Fire).

Hey guys! So, remember that list of 55 questions I started last week (found through the amazing Notebook Sisters)? If not, here is the first 27 for you to check out. When you're done, I present to you 28-55!

28. Favorite reading snack?

I don't have one. Usually just coffee will do. That's basically heaven, in my book.

29. Name a case in why hype ruined your reading experience.

Ohhhhh.....let's see. I think I'll pick 2. One that's old school and everyone knows about, and one that's a bit newer. First up on the chopping block - Vampire academy. Peer pressure sucks sometimes. The plot and non-stop action were what kept me reading. But Rose? I wanted to punch her so many freakin times. She wasn't snarky, she was just plain mean. Hated being called a slut, yet, quite frankly, didn't exactly do anything to help her reputation. Also, even if she wants to do all that, I could've had a bit of sympathy for her had she not complained and talked about other people doing the same thing. Quite hypocritical. Also, what's up with Dimitri? Why does everyone find him so attractive?! The only good thing about him was the fact that he wasn't afraid to call Rose out. She needed it. So, as far as Vampire Academy goes - not for me. Though I did read the next 2 books....

Alright, second book up on the chopping block - The Kiss of Deception. Now, I didn't hate this one. Actually, I enjoyed it. It just wasn't what I expected. I expected a sweeping fantasy with to die for romance and heart-grabbing emotions. What a got was a light fantasy that barely touched on the world with a mediocre romance and slight emotions. I did actually end up liking Lia, which, from the synopsis, I didn't think would happen. Unfortunately, neither of the guys made my heart go aflutter, but I was intrigued. The problem being, it wasn't really till the end that the book actually delivered on what everyone said. The plot finally got going, the men got interesting, the world was beginning to get fleshed out and crap actually happened. And then it ended. Of course. Will I read book 2? Yes. But book 1 definitely didn't blow me away like everyone said....

30. How often do you agree with critics about a book?

I assume your talking about professional critics? If that's the case, I don't read their opinions. If the critics opinions about books are anything like their opinions about movies, they suck. So I just don't read them.

31. How do you feel about giving bad/negative reviews?

Well, I don't believe in bashing and basically destroying a book (or the author - they worked hard!) with words, but at the same time, this is a place for me to give my opinion. If I don't like a book, I don't like a book and I'll tell you. And, it's just something people are going to have to realize - just because I don't like a book, doesn't mean someone else won't find it phenomenal. My blog is a place for people to determine whether or not they'll like a book. If they have similar taste, or if our pet peeves are the same, they'll turn away from it. However, my review could also help solidify someones decision to read it because things stated in my review that bother me, may not bother them.

So, in short, I don't believe in just plain hating on a book, but describing why (with a bit of snark and sarcasm, obviously) to help others determine whether this book is for them.

32. If you could read in a foreign language, which would you choose?

GERMAN! Yes, I love my 2nd home. I picked up the language when I lived there long, long ago, but have, rather unfortunately, lost it. I hear reading in another language is a great way to pick it up though. Maybe I'll try it one day.

33. Most intimidating book you've read.

Is this a thing? INCONCEIVABLE! I've never been intimidated by books... Well, I take that back now that I think about it. If not wanting to read a series finale because it means a great series is over is considered intimidation, then yes. I have been intimidated by books. Curse you Ruin and Rising!

34. Most intimidating book I'm too nervous to start.

None to date. I'M INVINCIBLEEEEE!

35. Favorite poet?

Shel Silverstein. He's awesome. And basically the only poet I know.

36. How many books do you usually have checked out from the library at any given time?

I exercise great self-control at the library. So only a couple. I'm a slow reader and don't really care to pay fines. If I'm going to pay for a book, I want to actually own the darn thing. Also, my old library (haven't gotten round to the new one yet) didn't have that many options, so that helped a lot.

37. How often have you returned books to the library unread?

Surprisingly, not often. Though I'm also not a big library person so I don't have too many checked out at one time (see questions above).

38. Favorite fictional character?

WHAT KIND OF QUESTION IS THIS?! OMG...how do I answer this?! CELAENA! Any of the main gals from the Lunar Chronicles series!! So many characters from Rick Riordan's fabulous series (PERCABETHHHHH)! So many HP characters too! And ALANNA (Song of the Lioness)! NIKOLAIIIIII!!! GAHHHH! SO MANNYYYYYYY!

39. Favorite fictional villain?

Mmmmmmm The Darkling. Absolutely enticing. So evil. So delectable.

Michah (from the Seven Realms series).

Any of the baddies from Rick Riordans books. So evil. So funny.

Basically, any villain who has reasons and is evilllll. I love a good villain.

Though I have noticed, I tend to like books with multiples baddies. Or with ones that have a main baddie, but other characters aren't exactly saints.

40. Books you're likely to bring on vacay?

Any awesome fantasy book. Or, basically, any book. I'm not picky.

41. The longest you've gone without reading?

Ummmmmmmmm....do I really have to answer this question? Okay, *takes a breath* - 16 years. Don't kill me! Okay, it's not like I never read in those 16 years. I started reading really early and found some awesome series to read. But, I wasn't a reader. Reading was for my siblings. My sister used to bug the crap out of me and basically brag about how much she read and how smart she was and blah, blah, blah that I did the only natural thing - I did the complete opposite. I said I was too cool for reading. Had too many friends to take time to read. Yes, horrible me. But I learned my lesson! The end of my junior year I got my Kindle, found Goodreads, and found blogs. Before this, I might find a series through friends or family and devour it (Song of the Lioness, HP, Percy Jackson), but I'd never look into finding another series. With Goodreads and blogs, that all changed. I was now able to find books similar to books I'd previously liked. And now that I blog, it keeps me reading. It helps me make it a priority and realize how incredibly awesome delving into a new world can be. So thank you fellow readers. You helped me find my new love.

42. Name a book that you could/would not finish.

I have a couple DNF books actually.

1. The Queen's Choice - I have such a love/hate relationship with her previous books that I wasn't sure whether I'd like this one or not. Definitely not feeling it. For too many reasons to count.

2. Ender's Game - I'm sorry, but I truly do not understand how this is basically considered sic-fi royalty. It was boring. It was beyond weird. And just......not for me. Really, really disappointing. I know y'all are going to kill me but, the movie was actually better, not that it was great though either. THE HERESY!

3. Carnival of Souls - Wow. I don't even remember this book. I was just looking through my reviews to see which books I DNF and this one popped up. It was just so meh. And weird.

4. Glitch - Made it 46% of the way through. Plot still hadn't gone anywhere. Annoying character who couldn't make up her mind. Insta-love. Made up cuss words. Also, looking back over the review, there is one really awkward part. I don't remember what it was. I'm kind of interested in going back to check it out....

5. The Last Princess - So much potential. So much fail. Not enough details, a mediocre MC, a weird insta-lovey relationship, and ridiculously quick pacing that didn't create a full picture.

6. Starters - 1st half of the book = really interesting. 2nd half = not so much. After the first plot line is resolved, it gets boring. Also, confusing.

43. What distracts you easily when you're reading?

Well, I actually prefer it to be quiet, or with very low background noise. People talking to me is a big no-no. If you see me reading, be kind and let me know you want to talk to me or ask me a question instead of launching into your life's story or asking questions straightaway. Give me a chance to put my book down so I can give you my full attention. Unless I'm at a really good part. Then you wait.

44. Favorite film adaptation of a novel?

I actually was rather fond of both Hunger Games movies. They stuck really well to the books. Also, LORD OF THE RINGS! So, I've never read the books, but the movies are absolutely phenomenal. So good that when I went to New Zealand with my parents, my one request was that we visit the film site. Amazing.

45. Most disappointing film adaptation.

Percy Jackson. Horrible. Absolutely horrible. NOTHING LIKE THE BOOK! See, I'm actually relatively easy to please when it comes to books to movies, as long as they stick relatively well to the books. I'm not super picky because I know that the movies will never be as good as the books. BUT, this was horrific. Completely different than the books. I actually started this series because my friend wanted to go see the movie. For those who have never read this series, please don't base your decision on whether or not to read the books based on the movie. Sure, the movies are at least entertaining, somewhat. However, they never should've been called Percy Jackson.

46. The most money I've ever spent in the bookstore at one time.

I try and only buy 1 book at a time (college budget here!). Does that always happen? *snort* NO! Let's see, the other day I spent....$46, give or take a dollar.

47. How often do you skim a book before reading it?

Is this a thing? I don't think this should be a thing.

48. What would cause you to stop reading a book halfway through?

Well, if it's completely boring for one. Also, if I don't like the MC, the plot, or insta-love I'll DNF probably. Thing is, sometimes I can get over having one of these things so long as everything makes up for it. What I've noticed with book I tend to DNF is that everything is very "meh". I'll even finish a book that I'm totally hating on as long as it's not completely boring (Camelot Burning).

49. Do you like to keep your books organized?

I don't even have proper bookshelves, so, no. Don't worry, I'm getting some for my new apartment. Still probably won't be organized though.

50. Do you prefer to keep books or give them away one you've read them?

MINEEEEEEE!

51. Are there any books you've been avoiding?

The only one I can think of currently is LOTR. I absolutely loved the movies. Seriously, I watched them as soon as they came out (I was in elementary school - nothing scared me!). I even just had a LOTR extended addition marathon this past spring at school! I don't recommend it though. So. Many. EMOTIONS! Since I love the movies so much, I'm afraid to read the books. I'm afraid it will ruin it for me whether it's because they are boring or because they are different than the movies. So, I'll just stay blissfully ignorant.

52. Name a book that made you angry.

Oh, I really don't know actually. I've not liked books before. I'm not sure any have made me angry per se. Frustrated? When the MC is completely, utterly, idiotic.

53. A book you didn't expect to like, but did?

Threats of Sky and Sea - I was a bit surprised by this one. I think because it was a little known book but surprisingly good. The MC really helped. I wish things would've been fleshed out a bit more, but definitely looking forward to book #2.

The Winner's Curse - This one had a lot of hype. I was hesitant but picked it up anyways. Beautiful. Amazing. Breath-taking. Emotional. So, SO good. Read it. READ IT!.

54. A book you expected to like but didn't?

The Queen of the Tearling and The Kiss of Deception - I didn't hate either book, but I certainly didn't love them like I expected.

55. Favorite guilt-free pleasure reading?

Irrelevant. I feel no guilt while reading. I read what I like. Except in public....

1. I'm done with work! My 2 months of imprisonment FINALLY are over!!! Okay, maybe likening it to prison is a bit harsh. It actually wasn't awful. I really loved both of my jail mates (or coworkers if you want to be PC) and I worked for my brother so it was actually fun and easy going. Just mind numbingly boring. But, easy money. I'll miss it.

2. I'm heading up to my new apartment at school next weekend. Woohoo! I'm always sad to leave my family, but I am very excited to finally get out of the dorm and live on my own (well, with roommates). And decorating? Oh, so much fun! I've still got some shopping to do before heading up. All that hard-earned money (see above) going down the drain. For a good cause, of course.

3. School starts. Bleh. Actually, I'm really excited for some of my classes, and to see my friends of course, but homework (aka papers)? Not so much. I'm someone who can just listen to lectures or discussions and be okay. Weird, I know.

Last week sometime, I was perusing my blog feed minding my own business when I came upon wondrous blog post by the amazing Notebook Sisters: 55 questions about books. Questions about where I get to talk about books and myself? I'm always game for that. These 55 questions, which the Notebook Sisters believe originated here, are what I bring to you today. Well, at least the first part. I agree with Cait and Mime, 55 questions is a lot.

Well, at least not in one post.

So, without further ado, I present to you 27 questions about yours truly.

1. Favorite childhood book:

Soooooooo, confession time:

I, Mackenzie, here at "Oh, For the Love of Books" did not grow up reading.

But don't go grabbing your torches and pitchforks quite yet. I wasn't necessarily a reader, but I did read. Only when I found those really rare books that captured me. My sister was always the reader and would bug the crap out of me to read and brag about all that she read so I decided I was better than reading. Naturally. Doing the exact opposite of what I'm told to do? Welcome to childhood.

Anyways, what books I did read were simply phenomenal. Two series that stuck with me were the Harry Potter series (who wasn't impacted by these?) and both The Song of the Lioness series and the Immortals series by Tamora Pierce. Both J.K. Rowling and Tamora Pierce are goddesses amongst man. Most of y'all have ~~definitely~~ probably read HP, but if y'all have not been lucky enough to be blessed by the awesomeness that is Pierce, I suggest you remedy it immediately. Else I might take the torches and pitchforks to you....I kid. I kid. Somewhat.

2. What are you reading right now?

I am currently re-reading the gloriousness that is Throne of Glass by yet another goddess amongst man, Sarah J. Maas. I've decided to re-read the whole series in preparation for Heir of Fire (WLEJHRWOEFJWOIEJFO!!). I just finished The Assassin's Blade and my emotions are currently a wreck. Naturally, I've decided The Assassin's Blade did not produce enough feels and decided to jump right into Throne of Glass without giving myself the necessary time to get myself together. Please ignore my feels. They may dissipate....eventually.

3. What books do you have on request at the library?

....um......none...PLEASE DON'T HURT ME! I JUST MOVED HERE!!!

4. Bad book habit:

Umm....okay, just give me a moment......ugh, sorry, can't think of one. Which means I'm perfect. Obviously. And humble.

5. What do you currently have checked out at the library?

Please see #3.

6. Do you have an e-reader?

Yes, And I absolutely adore it #NoShame. I'm a traveler and having an e-reader is a wonderful help. Also, I usually get ARCs through Netgalley and it's much easier to read on a Kindle rather than a computer. Actually, ARCs are really all I use it for. I still really love owning books. I can't ever give that up completely.

7. Do you prefer to read one book at a time or several at once?

Well, I prefer to read one book at a time. However, that doesn't mean I don't read more than one at a time. Usually that happens when I'm not totally in love with a book or I'm not in the mood. I'll start it, put it down and start another book, and when I'm finished with the second book, I may or may not pick up the first one again.

8. Have your reading habit changed since you started to blog?

Not that I can recall. I guess I try to read more and take advantage of free time?

9. Least favorite book you've read so far this year?

Unfortunately, I feel like I've had quite a few I've been disappointed with. To name a few:

All of those were books that I wasn't sure what to expect, but was disappointed anyway. There are two books that I had high(er) expectations for, yet fell somewhat flat for me: Kiss of Deception and The Queen of the Tearling. Both were books that the blogosphere were practically exploding over, yet left me with somewhat confused feelings. Both were books I devoured while reading, yet still found many issues. The Kiss of Deception didn't leave me with quite as mixed emotions as The Queen of the Tearling (as you can see from the review), but both were less than savory.

10. Favorite book you've read this year?

Impossible. There is no one book, but many. Therefore, A LIST!

Cress - Cress is just absolutely, preciously adorkable. As if that wasn't good enough, the romantic interest is Captain Thorne. *SWOON*

The Falconer - Aileana is one butt-whoopin, faerie-killing machine. She. Is. Awesome. With a beautiful Scottish setting, a snarky, intelligent, kick-butt heroine, and, of course, the incredibly mysterious Kiaran, this book is a favorite. BUT THAT ENDING! GAHHHH! Oh, and Kiaran.

The Winner's Curse - So beautiful. I didn't know what to expect, but this just blew me out of the water. I actually plan on re-reading it before writing a review. It was that good.

The House of Hades - It's Rick Riordan. I'm fully convinced that he is one of the gods of olympus hiding amongst us rather mundane mortals.

The Grisha Trilogy - I re-read this and the FEEEELINGSSSSS. I can't believe this series is over with! I'm in denial. My only consolation is the fact that the Great Leigh Bardugo is writing another series set in the Grisha universe. I suppose that sates my appetite somewhat.

The Assassin's Blade - I read all of the novella's save for the last one (and The Healer that was exclusive in this book) before this book came out. Then I stupidly bought this book. They were super good. But the last one. The last one. MY FEEELLINNGGGSSSS! It gutted me. Destroyed me. I even knew what happened, just not how. And the how is what destroyed me. Beautiful, haunting, heart-breaking, and feels-destroying. But oh so satisfying.

11. How often do you read out of your comfort zone?

Never. Well, basically never. Unless textbooks count.

12. What is your reading comfort zone?

I don't really know actually. If it comes to genres, I'll read most any fiction, except contemporary. I just don't like contemporary. I read to escape. Contemporary doesn't allow that in my opinion. I may not be huge fans of some genres (urban, horror, thriller) but I'll still read them. They may just not be my forte, per se.

13. Can you read in the car?

If you don't mind me puking all over you, then yeah. I don't like getting sick though, so I'll go with the safe HECK NO!

14. Favorite place to read?

Anywhere at home that's comfortable. I really love the chair by the window I have in my room. We also have a reading room with two chairs looking out a window that's so comfortable to read it. And my couch. I love my couch.

15. What is your policy on book lending?

Non-existant. Not many of my friends really read to be honest. If I lend them to anyone, it's usually my sister. The only thing I hate that she does is using the cover for a book mark. I mean she takes off the whole cover and shoves it in the book instead of just using the flap. IT'S BOOK CANNIBALISM! Other than that, if I lend em out, I just ask that they take care of them.

16. Do you dog-ear books?

17. Do you ever write in the margins of your books?

MORE BLASPHEMY!

Okay, I totally get why people do this and, to be honest, I even envy them. With the writing, the books look so loved and worn. But, but, BUT! I just can't bring myself to do this.

18. Not even with textbooks?

Not even with textbooks.

19. What is your favorite language to read in.

English. Else I wouldn't understand a thing I was reading and it would be far less enjoyable.

Though, I do hear it's a great way to help learn a new language!

20. What makes you love a book?

You know, I can't really pinpoint it. Not making me want to gouge my eyes out usually helps. But I'm usually relatively easy to please. At least I think so. But what makes a book great? Wonderfully complex and amazing characters, an engaging plot, action-packed awesomeness, and FEELS! I need to feel connected and actually care about the characters. Also, added bonus points for maps. And really, to make a book awesome in my opinion, you need all of these dumped in one awesomely fantastic medieval-like fantasy world (with magic). I love fantasy.

21. What will inspire you to recommend a book?

If I love it, I'll recommend it. Usually I don't recommend though. I'm truly awful at it.

22. Favorite genre?

FANTASYYYYY (see #20)! Seriously, give me fantasy any day of the week and I'm a happy gal. I love exploring new worlds with magic, wonderful characters, adventure, and complex systems. Also, if it's got a medieval vibe to it, it's basically perfection.

23. Genre you rarely read but wish you did:

Oh. Um. I don't know. I guess classics. Unless I had to read them for school, I avoided them like the plague. I feel like I should like the classics. But I don't.

24. Favorite biography?

You're assuming I've read one...

25. Have you ever read a self-help book?

Part of one. When I was considering opening an Etsy store I read the how-to guide for idiots. Quite informative actually.

26. Favorite Cookbook?

Any Christmas/dessert recipe book. I actually only have one, but it has my favorite seasonal dessert in it: Pumpkin cheesecake bars. To. Die. For.

27. Most inspiration book you've read this year (fiction or non-fiction)?

Oh. I don't know if inspired is necessarily the right word, but I do truly love the Throne of Glass series. For one, phenomenal writing, characters, and world-building. If I ever was a writer, this is what I'd aspire to be. But, I love it too because I love complex characters who aren't perfect and had to make incredibly hard decisions. I'm a psychology major and I absolutely love delving into personalities and the mind and decision-making when it comes to difficult situations. It's amazing what people will do to survive and it blows my mind how two people can be in the same situation, yet react completely different. It simply amazes me. And Celaena is as complex as it gets. I totally understand why she is how she is and I love delving into her past and really learning about her. She may be an assassin, but she's much more than that. It goes to show that you truly can't judge a book by its cover. It's what's between the pages, the inner story, that counts.

Top 10 Characters I Would Want on a Deserted Island With Me

For hotness or otherwise.....

1. Celaena (Throne of Glass)

Because she's Celaena. First off, she's snarky and we can complain to each other about our unfortunate circumstances. However, we'd totally be rocking it on the beach. She'll totally make it fun with all her sarcastic wit. Also, she kicks butt. I'm pretty sure she could take on whatever unsavory creature comes our way.

2. Cress (Cress)

Yes, sweet, adorkable Cress. She's a techie! Sureeee there aren't going to be any technological advances on a deserted island, but I feel like she's a gal who could make a communicator out of coconut and twigs.

3. Captain Thorne (Cress)

Move over Cress, he's mine now. He'd make living on a deserted island bearable with his wit and humor. And hotness. Can't forget that.

4. Hermione (Harry Potter)

One word: magic. You know, so we could actually survive. There's probably a spell out there somewhere for building a boat. And if not, the LeviOsa charm will come in handy for lifting large pieces of wood to build said boat. Also, she's is the brightest witch of her age, so she'll know what to eat and what not to eat. She can make a magical tent or treehouse. And, if all else fails, she could just apparate us out of there.

5. Chaol (Throne of Glass)

Because he's really, really, ridiculously good-looking. Also, he'd take being on a deserted island in stride. And practice sword-fighting on the beach.

6. Percy Jackson (The Lightning Thief)

He's the son of the Sea god! We're on a deserted Island in the middle of the ocean! How could I not want this kid? He can use his awesome, watery skills to get us off the island. And make a really cool waterside of some sort. He can make a rainbow for an Isis-message to let people know where we are.

Also, wit. He makes any situation fun. And not to hard on the eyes either ;)

7. Annabeth (The Lightning Thief)

Because, let's face it, where would Percy be without this girl? She's a super genius! Both she and Percy can call in favors with the gods which is always helpful. She's also an architectural genius which means she knows how to build a boat. And while we are waiting for the boat to be built, we can live it out in style with the amazing treehouse I know Annabeth will build. It will put HGTV to shame.

8. Cinder (Cinder)

She's a mechanic and tinkerer. I feel like with her, Hermione, Cress, and Annabeth, we should be able to build a freakin boat....

9. Katniss (The Hunger Games)

Not gonna lie, I think she's kind a downer. Not a fun as the other people on this list. But, she's hunts. I eat.

10. Nikolai (Siege and Storm)

Because he's Nikolai. He's also incredibly inventive. And funny. And hot. And intelligent. And snarky. And hot. And sarcastic. And a privateer. And a prince. And hot......

I think I have a pretty good list going here. Honestly, I wouldn't mind being on a deserted island with this motley group of awesomeness. I'd have a blast hanging with all the gals kicking butt, swapping stories, exchanging wit and looking at the gloriousness that is the men shirtless. I think I'd like to hang out on this island a bit soaking up the rays, building campfires, and awesome tree houses (and having fun with water slides and waves a la Percy) before heading out. I'll be sure to mark it on a map so as to come back and visit.

This is yet another book that has been making the rounds of the blogosphere as of late. Everywhere I turn it's Kiss of Deception this or Kiss of Deception that. So, naturally, I had to give it a go.

Before I read:

Initially, before even starting the book I had some reservations.

1. This was obviously a book focusing on romance. Sure, the summary makes it sound like there is a lot of adventuring and unlocking of secrets, but from what reviews I've read, the men are a big focus of the story.

2. Love triangle. These actually don't always bother me, so long as it's done well. And by done well, I mean she chooses. Sure there can be tension between her and the other guy (because he's obviously going to be uber hot, amirite?), but she still knows who she wants.

3. Perhaps the most serious of reservations was my hesitations towards Lia. You can see right there in the summary that she flees an alliance. FLEES AN ALLIANCE! Alliances are to smother tensions and prevent countries from killing each other. HOW CAN I GET BEHIND HER ABANDONMENT OF HER COUNTRY? It's selfish. Obviously tensions are high, which is the reason for the alliance in the first place. But, I also totally feel her. See? I'm not completely cold hearted. So, while a bit hesitant, I went into this book with an open mind.

The results?

Those reservations were unfounded.

Well, at least somewhat.

This book was good and it was enjoyable, but I wasn't head-over-heels either. It was just solidly enjoyable.

Somewhat unfounded reservation #1 - This one is somewhat unfounded, not because the romance isn't an integral part of the plot, but because that is not necessarily what Lia focuses on consistently. The romance is integral because you don't know who is who. Therefore, the boys play a big part. BUT, Lia isn't sitting there constantly mooning over them. She's got her own life to live. Now, do the boys entrance upon said life often? Yes. But, eh. I'm not going to say no to two mysterious men.

Somewhat unfounded reservation #2 - Yes, there is a love triangle. And no, you don't immediately know who she is going to choose. However, she does choose. She even feels bad when she feels that she's played on the other's emotions. Sure, the other is ridiculously good looking too, but, though there may be some instances, she still knows. Good for her.

Also, what I really loved about the love triangle, and it actually kept me reading, was the fact that you don't know which boy is which. That's right. This is a guessing game. You know a prince and an assassin are sent for her, but since both are hiding secrets, you don't know which is which. I thought I might've guessed, but then I kept psyching myself out thinking "well that's what she wants you to think" sort of thing. I enjoyed it.

Somewhat unfounded reservation #3 - I ended up liking Lia a lot more than I thought I would. Do I agree with her decision? Eh. But I also don't necessarily fault her for it either. Her brothers were given plenty of freedom, but since she was a "first daughter" she was restricted in many areas. I can't hate her for wanting choice. And this girl is fiery. She's got a sharp tongue that can bring a man to his knees. But, what I really loved about her was how hard-working she was. This trait is what redeemed her in my eyes. This chick knew exactly what kind of life she was getting into by leaving. She knew she wouldn't have attendants or an overabundance of food. She knew she'd have to work.

And she did it anyways.

I've never seen someone enjoy work so much. I envied her. She went at it with such vigor that I couldn't help but root for her.

SLIGHT SPOILER: Though, as much as I love her, I do have to say this though: What did she think would happen? She's almost surprised when she hear's stories about threats of war, etc. It was incredibly naive of her and she comes to regret her actions far to late. END SPOILER.

However, this does bring me to a couple of things that made this book good but not great.

1. So, as you know, you're not supposed to know which guy is the assassin and which is the prince. This kept it fun and interesting, but also made me realize that there aren't many differences personality-wise between the two. Also, though this does focus on romance, I also didn't feel like we got to delve deep into either personality enough to get me to love either boy. Neither guy is really fleshed out. Maybe this is because they are both hiding their identities in this book. Hopefully the second book, since you learn at the end of the first one who's who, will delve deeper into their personalities. Also, kinda insta-attraction. It's why the assassin doesn't kill her right off (crappy assassin in my opinion).

2. Nothing really happens in this book until the end. The first 3/4 are of Lia's new life and the secretive boys. But the plot doesn't really kick into high gear until the last quarter. The first part was interesting, then it goes through a bit of a dry spell where I wasp like "LET'S GET A MOVE ON!". But it's this last part where we're finally going somewhere and doing something. The plot is finally moving forward.

Alongside the plot not going anywhere is the world not really being delved into. The world is described and there is a map (lots of extra points for that), but the history isn't delved into. Now, I'm assuming this is following the trope of lots of discoveries and her being lied to or something or other, but still. It could've been delved into a bit more. Again, the history of the world goes alongside the plot where it doesn't really pick up till the last quarter. However, I really did enjoy those little tidbits taken from some of this worlds books in between the chapters.

Ohhhh how could I forget?! I was so caught up in talking about the plot, the boys, and Lia that I totally forgot another plus in this book. Bindi, Gwenyth, and Pauline. Bindi is the somewhat cross, but really a sweet momma bear owner of the inn/tavern. Gwenyth, the saucy and mysterious barmaid that tells Lia like it is. And Pauline. Sweet, naive Pauline. What I liked most about her was her relationship with Lia. Though she was Lia's servant, they both treated each other as equals and were good friends. Love it.

Overall:

This book was enjoyable. I ended up liking Lia more than I originally thought I would and liked the guessing game when it came to the guys. However, I believe the lack of plot movement and the fact that I wasn't head-over-heels for either of the boys kept this from being great. However, the last quarter, when things start moving and Lia becomes incredibly determined and really shines and we start learning more about the world and it's history, I got interested. I'm definitely looking forward to book number two.

Let's face it. Unless you've been living under a rock for about 6 months, you've heard of this book. I have seen raving after raving review of this book with all it's epic high fantasy-ness and intriguing plot and plain but tough in her own way heroine. So, naturally, I went out and spent my money on it.

Eh. I'm not sure.....

Apparently, I missed the "really awesomely fantastic OIWJEFOWEJF" book part. And yet, I didn't.

Honestly, I really have absolutely no idea how I feel about this book.

When I finally got my hands on it, I devoured it. This book is huge with really small writing, yet I took ever opportunity to read it. That should mean I loved it, right?

Wrong.

This is one of those books where I was eating up the pages like

The book was pulling at me saying "read me, love me, worship meeeeeeee".

Then I finished the book and looked more like this....

And right about now, I have a ~~really unflattering~~ look of confusion upon my face.

Writing this review? Impossible. How can I say I loved it, yet felt it lacking in so many places? After finishing this book, I knew I had to get all my thoughts down, no matter how jumbled they were. So, I sat down at work and wrote an e-mail to myself with bullet points of all the good, the bad, and the just plain ugly (because who actually works at work, amirite?) It's a confusing and messy mixture of words. However, it's really the only way to write this thing.

So, without further ado, here are my incredibly eloquent, long, and not in the least bit confusing bullet points with both the positive and the negative of this....interesting book.

First off, loveeee the cover and style of this book. It feels so old timey and even had a BUILT-IN BOOKMARK!

It was good. Obviously. Else I wouldn't have devoured it like I did. But, this is one of those books where, after you finish, you're like "wait....what?". Sure, a couple things bugged me during, but after actually finishing and allowing things to sink it, I realized I had many issues.

So...the Caden are supposed to be like super awesome assassins.....except they aren't. Don't get me wrong, Mace is skilled, I get that. Butttttt shouldn't assassins be all lithe and really skilled? Mace is just brute stregth, but I feel as if the assassins could've, ya know, dodged the mace. But they didn't. He took down like 4!? Couldn't one have distracted while another came from behind with a knife or something? Also, SUPER quick fight. I feel that if it had gone into a bit more detail to really show how the Mace beat them, it'd be more believable. But he swung his Mace and sayonara!

Also...how was NO one able to find her? I'm assuming Magic of some sort. Still not sure though.

The Red Queen is very one dimensional when you stop to think about it. She's evil for the sake of being evil. But why? Again, I know that this will be discussed (hopefully) in future books, but there could've been a glimpse of her past. Her evilness was definitely mainly the shock factor. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited to see why she's evil (and psycho) and I was intrigued by her few chapters, but still left wanting.

I like Kelsea. She's tough and intelligent (somewhat) and though insecure, she holds her own. But I still had issues.

Her insecurities. I think it's awesome when a heroine isn't your typical model-pretty. It's realistic because not everyone is going to look like that (myself included). The problem lies in the fact that here she is complaining about being "plain" (overused) yet is quite cruel to a woman who isn't pretty according to her, yet the woman obviously believed so. Example? " and for all the anguish that Kelsea's own reflection had caused her lately, she saw something far worse than being ugly: being ugly and thinking you were beautiful." What's wrong with that? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, isn't it? Neither Kelsea nor this woman may fit into the "standards of beauty", but it doesn't mean they aren't or that someone won't find them beautiful. Had it just been her complaining about her being plain, I would've been annoyed slightly only because the word was overused, but it was this quote that diminished my view of her. I understand jealousy, but to a girl who has confidence (even if she does have a crappy attitude)?

For all her faults, I still liked her. But, I definitely have some issues with her...politics. Look, I'm a realist. I admit it. And Kelsea....is an idealist. So, our....politics...differ. One, I don't really care for when author's shove their beliefs down your throat and unfortunately, that happens. Often. Normally, whether I agree with them or not, if it's subtle I'm totally okay. This was definitely a bit forced. And applicable today. So, since this takes place in the future, it's hinting that basically because things weren't done a certain way, it caused all our problems, eventual downfall, etc. She's definitely and idealist, and I congratulate her on it, but things just aren't that simple. I think that is really the problem. Not so much that we may differ in views, but that she thinks it's just so easy. Politics are NEVER easy. Part of me wants to be like YAY! she's going to be a great leader who cares about helping, but she also has NO grasp whatsoever on politics if she thinks you can just say it and it will happen. There are a lot more factors than that. Sorry girl.

Spoiler (sort of)Also, call me cold and heartless but what she did at the beginning when she gets to the castle was completely and utterly idiotic. This goes along with the whole thinking politics are easy. So....you're going to take you'r whole country to a war which y'all know you ain't gonna win, to save a few? Yes, I'm heartless. Sue me. Like, if she had a fighting chance or thought it through or negotiated or something, then maybe. But WHAT DID SHE THINK WAS GOING TO HAPPEN?! Don't get me wrong. I commend her and even kind of like it, but the fact that she thought that'd be the end of it or that there would be no repercussions is what bothered me. End spoiler

I do like the harem of sexy men though. It's a bit weird because they're all older than her, but I do admit, I love myself a silver fox ;)

Also, THEY have a head on their shoulder. Which most likely comes with age. Which is good for Kelsea. I like her, but she's got a lot of growing up to do and I chalk that up to her being raised in a cottage with only two people. She hasn't had an opportunity to learn from anyone else or engage in critical thinking. I'm excited to see where she goes and how she changes and grows up.

Oh, and the Fetch! How could I forget about him? He's not in here nearly as much as he should be. Sure, we only catch a glimpse of him, but call me interested. He's mysterious. Though....I'm not actually sure of his purpose.

And, surprisingly, the whole world thing didn't bother me that much. Maybe because I expected it? Basically this takes place in the future that went back to medieval times. Now, the explanations for how it came to be or how there were no doctors wasn't exactly logical in my book, but maybe we'll get a better (truer) explanation later on.

Also, I'm definitely over the whole anti-religion thing. Sometimes she handles it well, but very few times. Don't get me wrong, I know that religious systems aren't perfect and have been/are even now corrupt however, to paint all religion negatively and to bring it up often and have it as an integral part is a bit grating. The saving grace? The one good religious guy. I like him. You go adorable, sweet old man.

I did like the random POV changes. They tied in really well and it actually gave us a glimpse of what is actually going on.

Spoiler (sort of - nothing detailed, but overview of plot)
After finishing, I just feel like nothing actually happened. She became queen and that's it. Basically. Like it's traveling from the cottage to the castle, some attempts on her life, reaching the kingdom, doing one grand (stupid) gesture, more attempts, one final grand attempt and that's it. It's not necessarily that nothing happened, but nothing was accomplished. End spoiler.

As you can see, those points are all over the place and definitely not in chronological order. Heck, I'm not even sure I hit it all. But, this is all I wrote at the time and I don't really feel like writing even more (heck, this thing is long enough as is!).

Overall:

So, in case you skipped the rather confusing and jumbled mess that is the review above, here is the run down:

I both loved it and hated it. This book is good. The main character has potential, though she also has a lot of growing up to do. She's got good ideas and really cares, but is also immature at times. There is a harem of sexy, older men. The villain is more shock factor than anything, but I'm interested to see where it goes. The Fetch is hot. And mysterious. Not in here enough, but I look forward to reading more about him. The world-building isn't A+ and I'm not sure exactly how it works out, but it's definitely different. While some political shoving and religious hating nagged me, it was also ignorable (somewhat - it was just a little bit too much of HERE! HERE ARE MY POLITICAL VIEWS! THEY ARE OBVIOUSLY CORRECT! TAKE THEM! IMPLEMENT THEM! NOWWWW). Also, looking back, I don't feel like the plot really moved anywhere. But I liked it. I think. I don't know. I'm confused....

So, remember when I mentioned the harem of silver foxes? Well here's a post full of them so that you'll think reading my long review was worth it. Which it totally was.

Honestly, I didn't really think this would be something I'd like. Sure it's a fantasy, but it seems a bit romantic for me. Not that I don't like romance, I just don't like it to be solely romance and have angst. Please save me from the angst.

But this? There's just something soooo exquisite (yes, I just did that) sounding about it. It's sounds like a truly delectable world just waiting to be delved into. And I admit that the men sound intriguing. And steamy ;)

This is one of those books that just kinda flies by under the radar waiting to be seen as the gem it is. Honestly, I don't even remember how I came upon this book, but as soon as I read summary, I knew (or hoped) it'd be something I'd enjoy. I was happy to find that it was still on Netgalley and took my chances on getting accepted and I'm so glad I did.

This book was just all-around enjoyable. Did it still need some work? Yes. But that doesn't mean it wasn't good. I, for one, found myself eager to pick up my Kindle at every opportunity in order to finish it.

This book follows the basic premises of most fantasy novels, yet was also refreshing.

First off, I really came to adore Breena. She's not exactly your typical heroine what with being a bar maiden and all, yet I loved her all the same. She is spirited, yet has common sense. She tends toward impulsivity, yet she catches herself, thinks things through, and realizes when to hold her tongue and when not to. Example?

"There are times for defiance, but now is not one of them."

See?! INTELLIGENT with a healthy dose of common sense! She's been thrown into a situation that isn't exactly in her favor, yet she takes it in stride. She knows things can't always be changed and she accepts it. She tries to change what she can, but she's also understands when things are out of her control. She's simply a breath of fresh air.

Also, another aspect not often found in books nowadays is a good relationship with parents. Sure, things aren't exactly what they seem when it comes to her dad (gotta make it interesting), but he truly cares about her and she him. They have a loving and caring relationship that adds freshness to the usual horrible/absent parenting.

This book also has some great secondary characters found in the refreshingly sweet and calming Tregle and bristly, actually-hiding-her-true-emotions Princess Aleta. Add in a greedy, manipulative, heartless king and a too-trigger-happy Lady Katherine and you've got yourselves your villains.

Another refreshing thing? The romance doesn't overtake the core plot of this book. Look, I'm all for romance, I just hate when characters become obsessed or do stupid things because of said love interest. I like romance, but I don't like it to be the focus. Therefore, it's always refreshing when it's there, but put on the back burner. Caden was sweet and genuine and had a thirst for knowledge. While I wasn't falling head-over-heels for him, I did see why Breena was starting to have feelings for him.

While the idea of elementals is nothing new, I'm always intrigued by it (also, just starting Avatar so this is helping my obsession. Why haven't I started this series earlier?!). However, I will say the world-building could use some work. I believe some confusion was due to the elemental gifts (they can change the ecosystem) but it was a bit confusing. However, I was still intrigued by the various kingdoms and can't wait for the world to become even more fully fleshed out.

Overall:

Thoroughly enjoyable. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it actually. While I do feel as if this first book skimmed the top of what this world has to offer, I was more than happy with it. Breena is a breath of fresh air. She's got the fiery attitude, but it's mixed with a healthy dose of common sense. It keeps her balanced, but she's not above rebellion. She's been thrown into a rather unfortunate situation, yet takes it in stride. This book also even threw a surprise my way! While I knew one, I certainly didn't guess the other! This book is a gem that's flown under the radar, but I'm here to make it shine ;) Read it!

Why I'm Waiting:

Before the full blurb was up for this book, I was interested. Lu's short little intro about this book ("X-men meets Assassin's Creed 2 meets Game of Thrones"!!!!) coupled with the absolutely beautiful and enticing pinterest board , I was hooked. And when I read the full blurb? I've gone from interested to GIVE IT TO ME NOW mode.

I love me a good anti-hero. Someone who blurs the line between good and evil. Someone who has gone through hardships and may do some cruel stuff, yet is also completely understandable (think Celaena). That is exactly the vibe I get from Adelina. Also, this part of the blurb, "I am tired of being used, hurt, and cast aside. It is my turn to use. My turn to hurt" gave me chills. I need this book.

Add in some hot sounding men, revolution, magical powers, action, and what sounds like some awesome world building and I'm dying to get my hands on this book. I am eagerly waiting on this and you better believe that I will get it the day it comes out.

So, since I'm supposed to do a "real" book review, here it is.

This was part of my series re-read in preparation for the third and final book of this trilogy. And, just like the first book, I was blown away yet again. It's the mark of a strong series when reading the book again brings back the same strong emotions as when you first read them. All the heart-ache and emotions came flooding back to me and kept my heart racing. Kudos to you Bardugo.

Siege and Storm starts off a bit slow, but don't let that fool you. It doesn't take long for this book to kick into high gear yet again and take you on one heck of a ride. At the end of the last book you have Mal and Alina fleeing the Darkling after that craziness that was the ending of Shadow and Bone. Alina and Mal think time is on their side. HA! It isn't long before the Darkling shows up in all his evil gloriousness like "you thought you could DEFEAT ME?! PUNY HUMANS!" and all hell breaks loose yet again. And that's just the first couple chapters. Add in questing, political intrigue, fighting, courting, Sun Summoning, new Darkling ~~psycho~~ powers, and you have the plot line of Siege and Storm. While I thought the first part of their journey (questing) would be the entire book ~~and become boring,~~ I was easily proven wrong. This book doesn't contain just one part of their journey, but multiple parts, all flowing seamlessly together to create a story that is full of humor, heartache, blood, and magic.

But the plot isn't the only part of this book that is phenomenal. Oh, no. The characters are definitely worthy of their own paragraphs of ~~gushing~~ praise.

Alina. Oh, honey. I feel for you. I really do because life is not easy. You always just wanted to blend in, but life threw you for a sucker punch and laughed in your face. But it's okay! Because you can do it! You've grown so much, through the first book and this book. I have faith in you! You're still sometimes insecure and even afraid, but that's okay because it's understandable. Though life isn't exactly on your side at the moment, you hold your own, and for that I salute you. You keep being you girl. Just remember, you're not alone. Some people may not be able to sympathize with you, there are those you can empathize with you and just want to help. Let them.

Mal. My dear, sweet Mal. Though the Darkling is my guilty pleasure, you should be the winner. You're a ~~ridiculously sexy~~ soldier who knows how to take care of himself and those you love. You're honorable, kind-hearted, ~~sexy~~ and truly care about Alina. I know that many people felt you were lacking in this book, but I completely understand you. You were a renowned soldier. You were good at what you did and, most importantly, enjoyed it. You liked what being a soldier entailed. But you gave it all up to save Alina. How can I fault you for that? And every day you continue to do so. But both of your paths are so different. And you gave up everything for her. Everything that made you who you were and it feels as if she isn't giving up anything for you. I totally feel your insecurities in having to be in a situation in which you are the odd ball out. Both of you are part of different worlds now. But never forget, you both also came from the same world. Though people hated the way your relationship was portrayed in this book, I applaud it's realism. Though your paths are different, and it makes staying together that much harder, I know you will prevail. I have faith in you.

The Darkling. What more can I say about you? I know I shouldn't like you what with you ~~being evil~~ having different plans than our heroes, but I do. So dark and mysterious. You're alluring and ~~delectable, delicious~~ enticing. Though you are not in this book NEARLY as much as you should be, every scene with you in it made me fan myself. Job well done.

But let's be honest here, the real reason this book is as phenomenal as it is is because of

STURMHOND

Oh, Sturmhond. You sexy beast you. How you made me swoon with your priceless wit, amazing charm, cocky swagger, and brilliant, strategic mind. I was so smitten by you that I chose you as my date for my first ever YA Prom. Your rakish demeanor and sarcastic nature won be over from the very beginning. I looked forward to every scene you were in and what witty rapport would be uttered from you glorious mouth next. Though Alina is clear in who she chooses ~~take me instead~~, that doesn't stop you from swaggering into the scene to steal the show. And, though your sarcasm and wit make you absolutely swoon worthy, I must admit that I was smitten by your intelligence. Yes, I love a good 'ol intelligent man. While good looks and sarcasm are always pluses in my book, intelligence tips the balance from gloriously sexy to WOEIFJWOEFIJWIOEFJ. You just keep being the sexy, swoony, cunning pirate you are Sturmhond. Oh, sorry. I mean privateer ;)

And though these are the main characters, I can't forget about the secondary characters. New additions include fighting family duo consisting of the tough-as-nails Tamar and stoic, mountain of a boy, Tolya. Oblivious, yet sweet, David and sharp-tongued Zoya are just a few of the Grisha that return to this story.

The world that Bardugo has created is phenomenal. So lush and beautiful and full of mythology. I found myself so interested in learning more about the Saints and the political systems of Ravka. Everything was just beautifully done and flowed smoothly together. But this book still sucker punches you in the gut.

I wasn't ready for the ending when it came. You think everything is fine and dandy them BAM! CHAOS! And I'm over here screaming (in my head, of course) and saying NO NO NO! All sorts of crazy stuff just starts happening! And it's brilliant! Heart-breaking! INSANE! After finishing this book, I was so glad I had Ruin and Rising on hand because there was no way I couldn't know what happens next.

Overall:

Amazing. Though this is the 2nd time I've read it, it feels like the first time. The magic is still there. While it took a bit to get into it, it blew me away. I will warn you that some people didn't like Mal, and I understand where they are coming from, but I'm totally on Mal's side. His reactions and their development as a couple is realistic, which makes it readable.

There is something I've discovered about myself this past week....

I am absolutely horrible about scheduling posts.

With my work schedule, I really only have time to do post on Wednesday or the weekends. That's maybe two posts a week. The problem is, I have plenty of time on those days. I just for the life of me can't get around to writing multiple posts and then scheduling them out so I'm not rushing to get a post up. And, let's be honest, this isn't necessarily new news, but being aware of a problem is the first step to fixing it, right? So, ~~hopefully~~ I will try to get better about making sure I get my reviews up instead of waiting till the last minute.

Honestly, I haven't kept up with my challenges but that's on my to-do list for this month. So, look for updates on those next monthly recap. However, I am doing a series finishing challenge that I've decided to do myself this summer (and also joined an official challenge). How am I doing on that? I've finished 2 series!

The first was the Blood of Eden series. I was unable to re-read the whole series because I didn't bring the first two with me to my new house, but I read the final one what a wonderful ending.

The second series I finished was the Grisha Trilogy. I re-read this entire series and THE FEELINGS! Re-reading the first 2 felt just as magical as reading it the first time. And the series ender?! GAH! SO GOOD! SO EMOTIONAL! CANNOT HANDLE!

Life:

Well, it's official. We've moved into the new ~~and final~~ house. With my dad retiring in a few months, my bro taking over a business, and finally getting our things, this month has been hectic. And I've made it through a month of work! That's an accomplishment if you ask me. I work for my bro and while it's incredibly boring, I love the gals I work with so it's bearable. Though I've really got to manage my time. I have so much time on my hands that I should read, but it's almost as if I have too much time on my hands that I abuse it. Something I've learned: Buzzfeed is addicting....

So, what are my plans for next month?
1. Practice on planning - Hello. My name is Mackenzie and I am a procrastinator.
2. ~~Feed~~ Work on my Buzzfeed ~~addiction~~ problem.
3. Continue reading series (or whatever the heck I want to read).
4. Write reviews as SOON as I'm done with the book. It helps. A lot.

Some books I look forward to in the month of July:

I've heard some good things about The Queen of the Tearling and I'm always game for a good fantasy! It's sounds complex and intriguing. Also, sounds like there could be hot knights. All you really need.

Midnight Thief is another book that's been on my radar for quite some time. Thieves and assassins? That's basically my perfect book. Unfortunately, I've heard some not so good things from people I trust. However, my curiosity outweighs my hesitation.

So....I actually didn't really want to read this one, but I'm giving into peer pressure. However, I have heard some really good things about The Kiss of Deception. I'm a bit hesitant because I don't really like the fact that she abandons her country. Is that cold? Oh, well. It was kind of a turn off because I picture her character as being whiny and "why me" and selfish. So.....eh, I'll give it a chance. Only because I ~~hesitantly~~ trust others.

For those international follower's of mine, the 4th of July here in the US is our independence day. It's a day to celebrate how blessed we are to have our freedoms. We celebrate with BBQs, alcohol, friends, family, fireworks and an explosion of red, white, and blue. The colors of freedom.

Glorious. Epic. Irresistible. Romance.

Bardugo is a goddess amongst men. Normally when I re-read, I still love the book, but I already know what's happening so part of the spark is gone. However, you know it's a BEYOND amazing book when those same emotions felt the first time around come rushing back. And that is precisely what happened. Reading this a second time felt like I was reading for the first time. All the feelings came back. My heart was racing, my pulse pounding, trying not to make unintelligible sounds while at work because we know that I would be given ~~side-eye~~ curious looks.

Since this is indeed a re-read and I've already reviewed it once, I'll make this (relatively) short and sweet. If you want to see my rather awesome (if I do say so myself) GIF filled review full of ~~gushing~~ completely coherent sentences, then check it out here.

So, the short of it?

Beautiful. Lush. Brilliant. Perfect.

First off, the world building is A++. Seriously phenomenal stuff here. Lush and gorgeous, Bardugo does a beautiful job of bringing in Russian influence into this unique fantasy world. And the Grisha? So cool! Not gonna lie, I totally wish I was one of them. AND THERE'S A MAP!! I love maps because it means the author really took the time to flesh out their fantasy world. That takes love and dedication.

Second, the characters. Oh, the characters.

Alina, my heart goes out to you girl. Her growth throughout just this book alone is beyond amazing. She's not necessarily strong at first, but neither is she weak. She's a girl who just wants to belong and is suddenly thrust into this world that may prove to be more than she asked for. While oftentimes her desire to fit in clouds her judgement, she more than comes into her own.

And Mal. Oh, Mal. You're the good guy I should want. He's likable from the beginning even though he doesn't have much page time until the end. He's brave and encouraging and charming. And that speech at towards the end? *Swoon* But, while this is the guy that you know is the best for you and that you should be pining after, there's one guy who's just.....delectable.

The Darkling

MmMmmMmmmmmm. Mal is the good guy you should end up with. The Darkling is the irresistible one you want to end up with. Don't worry, it's not necessarily a love triangle seeing as Alina knows who she truly wants, but she definitely feels the pull, as you will too. Mysterious, powerful, and seductive. *faints*

He's just so sincere that it's hard not to fall for him.

And, for a slight spoiler (still vague but check at your own risk):

In the beginning it's so easy to think he is good and not greedy, that he has Ravka's best interests at heart. He's just so sincere. I totally understand how Alina could've been duped. I certainly didn't expect the turn of events. Bardugo does a great job of making you think the Darkling is truly good. Props to that!

Finally, the plot. The storyline is a delectable story wrapped in gorgeously described mythology with beautiful cultural inspirations thrown in. This brilliant plot line is brimming with Grisha, political intrigue, war and deception. Oh, and questing. Can't forget questing.

Okay, so I know I said I'd keep this short, but ~~I lied~~ I thought it would be, until I actually started writing. And it's shorter than my original review, so there's that. However, in short, all you need to know is: read it.
