Dear readers!

It's been a while and I'm now on to a lot of new projects that occupy a lot of my time. For example I run a new webshop called Timetoshave.se I sell branded razors and blades like Gillette Fusion and Gillette Venus.

Hopefully I will soon have time to write some new posts regarding my special interest in music from the 60's and 70's.

See you soon!

Richard Wright

2008-09-22T16:17:00.005+02:00

Today, it's one week ago Richard Wright died. I must say the news hit me quite bad. Even though he wasn't seen as one of the front figures of Pink Floyd he's still a musician that I've really admired.

As a tribute, here is one of my favourite songs of Pink Floyd, and it's written by Richard Wright himself.

Ray Charles Sings Yesterday!

2008-09-22T16:04:00.003+02:00

I listened to this clip today and thought it was worth sharing. It's a cover on The Beatles' song "Yesterday". performed by Ray Charles.

Yesterday (Live) - Ray Charles

YouTube info:
The concert film Ray Charles: Soul of the Holy Land August 1973 documents the legendary performer's historic Tel Aviv concert and includes footage of him visiting some of the most renowned religious sites in the world. The 17-song set list includes many beloved hits including a cover of the Beatles' "The Long and Winding Road," "Let the Good Times Roll," "I Can't Stop Loving You," and "Yesterday."

The reason why I found this clip was that it was presented as #3 of best covers on "Yesterday" at this website. Maybe you can find some more good covers if you check it out!

The John Butler Trio

2008-09-18T15:04:00.008+02:00

My first contact with John Butler was two years ago when I listened to his instrumental song "Ocean", on YouTube. It's a amazing song and I must say I was really impressed. His guitar skills are brilliant and I'd never before heard that kind of sound.

Ocean - John Butler

This summer I visited Cambridge, and by a coincidence i ran into a copy of The John Butler Trio's latest CD "Grand National". I didn't listen to it until i came home but since then it feels like it has been running through my speakers constantly. Except for a great guitarist and a special sound, the music aren't anything like "Ocean" but It's still amazing!
The CD contains 13 tracks and in my opinion, all of them are great. This is a CD everyone have to listen to. Myself, I'm on my way to get their other releases and If they're just half as good as Grand National is I'll still be happy.

Here're some samples!

Caroline (Live) - The John Butler Trio

Better Than - The John Butler Trio

Wikipedia:
The John Butler Trio are an eclectic roots/jam band from Australia led by guitarist and vocalist John Butler. Two of the band's albums, Three (2001) and Living 2001-2002 (2003), have gone platinum in Australia and reached the top ten of the Australian album charts in those years. The 2004 album Sunrise Over Sea debuted at number one on the Australian charts on March 15, 2004 reaching gold record status in its first week on sale. Their next and latest release, entitled Grand National, was released on March 27, 2007. The band's releases are marketed independently by Jarrah Records which John Butler co-owns with West Australian folk band the Waifs.

The band won an ARIA award for "Best Independent Release" for Three in 2001 and again for Grand National in 2007 and has been nominated for three others. Three was released in the U.S. in 2002 and the John Butler Trio toured the U.S. in that year supporting the Dave Matthews Band and John Mayer.

I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did!

Ballad In Plain D

2008-09-15T18:02:00.007+02:00

I've been listening to Another Side Of Bob Dylan this weekend. I managed to fall in love with one song.

Ballad In Plain D - Bob Dylan

The song deals with hi recent break-up with Suze Rotolo and her sister. I think the song is fantastic, even though Dylan once said, refering to the song: "I look back at that particular one and say...maybe I could have left that alone."

Lyrics:

I once loved a girl, her skin it was bronze.
With the innocence of a lamb, she was gentle like a fawn.
I courted her proudly but now she is gone,
Gone as the season shes taken.

Through young summers breeze, I stole her away
From her mother and sister, though close did they stay.
Each one of them suffering from the failures of their day,
With strings of guilt they tried hard to guide us.

Of the two sisters, I loved the young.
With sensitive instincts, she was the creative one.
The constant scapegoat, she was easily undone
By the jealousy of others around her.

For her parasite sister, I had no respect,
Bound by her boredom, her pride to protect.
Countless visions of the other shed reflect
As a crutch for her scenes and her society.

Myself, for what I did, I cannot be excused,
The changes I was going through cant even be used,
For the lies that I told her in hopes not to lose
The could-be dream-lover of my lifetime.

With unknown consciousness, I possessed in my grip
A magnificent mantelpiece, though its heart being chipped,
Noticing not that Id already slipped
To a sin of loves false security.

From silhouetted anger to manufactured peace,
Answers of emptiness, voice vacancies,
Till the tombstones of damage read me no questions but, please,
Whats wrong and whats exactly the matter?

And so it did happen like it could have been foreseen,
The timeless explosion of fantasys dream.
At the peak of the night, the king and the queen
Tumbled all down into pieces.

The tragic figure! her sister did shout,
Leave her alone, God damn you, get out!
And I in my armor, turning about
And nailing her to the ruins of her pettiness.

Beneath a bare light bulb the plaster did pound
Her sister and I in a screaming battleground.
And she in between, the victim of sound,
Soon shattered as a child neath her shadows.

All is gone, all is gone, admit it, take flight.
I gagged twice, doubled, tears blinding my sight.
My mind it was mangled, I ran into the night
Leaving all of loves ashes behind me.

The wind knocks my window, the room it is wet.
The words to say Im sorry, I havent found yet.
I think of her often and hope whoever shes met
Will be fully aware of how precious she is.

Ah, my friends from the prison, they ask unto me,
How good, how good does it feel to be free?
And I answer them most mysteriously,
Are birds free from the chains of the skyway?

13 Reasons To Give Ringo Starr some respect!

2008-06-18T21:32:00.005+02:00

I have many times talked to people about the "Pete Best/Ringo Starr phenomenon". Some of them has said that Ringo was lucky, that Pete Best was a lot better drummer. They have also said that Ringo Starr was The Beatles weakest link, that he didn't really know how to drum and that he often got out of tempo. These people don't have a clue of what they're talking about.

If you get into the same discussion it will now be easy to refer to this list:

13 Reasons To Give Ringo Starr Some Respect.

"This is an excellent list of thirteen reasons given by John Bryant (a session drummer who has played with artists such as Ray Charles) why Ringo Starr was much more than “an average drummer,” as he is often labelled by music critics.

Always serving the song without showing off, Ringo was an integral and indipensible part of The Beatles. Ringo’s intuitive feel and creative big beat style continues to be hugely influential to contemporary musicians of diverse musical genres, whether they realize it or not. His feel was so consistent and solid that even the drum parts he played for songs in odd time signatures seem simpler than they truly are. Many technically great drummers could never hope to reproduce Ringo’s distinctive style."

George Harrison: "Playing without Ringo is like driving a car on three wheels."

Won't Get Fooled Again

2008-06-18T18:53:00.009+02:00

This is a clip with The Who performing Won't Get Fooled Again, in my opinion one of the greatest rock songs ever! Please notice the contrast between Townshend and Entwistle in this clip. I Think it's kind of fun. Keith Moon, Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend go crazy like always but John Entwistle is just standing there, (as usual).

Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who

I had the priviledge to se Daltrey and Townshend live last summer. It was amazing!

Robert Plant is not in a hurry!

2008-06-18T00:22:00.004+02:00

As a comment on the widely discussed, possible Led Zeppelin reunion tour and his present collaboration with Alison Krauss, Robert Plant has said:

"I'm in no hurry to go anywhere. I want to stay very close. This is a font of knowledge, and I'm sticking as close to it as I can"

Alison Krauss agrees by saying:

"We're all having a wonderful time, and I hope and I think all three of us (Krauss, Plant and producer T Bone Burnett) are hoping to continue this and that it goes on and on."

Source: oneindia.in

Well, I hope this collaboration won't remain any longer than it is said. I've already seen Plant/Krauss. Now I want to see Plant/Page/Paul Jones!

100 Greatest Rock Songs?

2008-06-17T19:49:00.004+02:00

Yesterday I found this list called "100 Greatest Rock Songs". Well, a lot of the songs listed are not rock songs and the list actually contains 300 songs and not 100 as the title says. But anyway, some good song recommendations I think! Take a look!

The Wind Cries Mary

2008-06-16T20:45:00.004+02:00

I actually discovered this performance today, 41 years after the day it was recorded in Stockholm, the same city I'm located in at the moment. Even though my thoughts about Hendrix are a little bit ambivalent I think this is one of the best songs ever written.

The Winds Cries Mary - Jimi Hendrix

After all the jacks are in their boxes
And the clowns have all gone to bed
You can hear happiness staggering on down the street
Footprints dressed in red
And the wind whispers mary

A broom is drearily sweeping
Up the broken pieces of yesterdays life
Somewhere a queen is weeping
Somewhere a king has no wife
And the wind, cries mary

The traffic lights, they turn blue tomorrow
And shine their emptiness down on my bed
The tiny island sags down stream
cause the life that lived is, Is dead
And the wind screams mary

Will the wind ever remember
The names it has blow in the past?
And with this crutch, its old age, and its wisdom
It whispers no, this will be the last
And the wind cries mary

I always get into a specific mood while listening to this song. It has something special. This is music!

The sound- and picture quality is quite bad in this clip but the song is very good! It's a cover on the version written by Murray Head. But I like Roger Daltrey's version much better!

Twist and Shout

2008-06-13T02:08:00.003+02:00

I just found this clip with The Beatles and thought it was a live performance but then I realised that they didn't have either microphones or cables for their instruments. I compared the music with the track released on their first album "Please Please Me" and realised that they were identical. Intresting.. or maybe not!

Twist and Shout (Playback) - The Beatles

As I said, the song was released on their first album in 1963. The song is actually a cover and the song was originally made famous by the group called "The Isley Brothers". That version was on the other hand a cover on The Top Notes version. A little bit complicated maybe.. Well, here is a live version by The Beatles in 1965. Listen and enjoy!
