My FUN Valentine...

This past Valentine's Day was awesome. The week started with me getting a beautiful "just because" purple rose arrangement from The Hubby which was awesome; and then on Valentine's Day I received another (this one with orange roses) - both with handwritten notes and were simply awesome. Mr. Swann can be such a sweetie at times - too bad he wasn't stateside for me to "love on" in person. It was a great day...

As for Valentine's Night I attended a concert at L'Auberge Casino Resort in Lake Charles. I was invited by a coworker and purchased the tickets months ago, only to realize that the concert was Valentine's Night the week prior and I would be attending as the "third wheel" to her and her husband! Nonetheless, I went along and had a ball. We sent text messages to the teleprompters, sang along, and danced in the aisles; I didn't feel like a third wheel at all and she was right behind me when I decided to run up to the stage to catch a rose (well more like snatch a rose) but it WAS intended for me. The concert was great and Boys II Men performed many of their hits to which I sang along so loudly, I was hoarse the next day.

After the concert we drove to Coushatta Casino Resort which felt like another hour away but was probably more like 15-20 minutes (I think I fell asleep on the way) and met up with another co-worker and some friends to dance the night away in the Casino's dance club. I really enjoyed myself and danced the night away. I was dropped off about 4:30 am and remember nothing of the ride but arriving at home, it was seriously past my bedtime!!! I haven't stayed out that long since....well I can't remember. And I know just why I don't as I had to get right up and have Robert at an 8 am soccer game that morning...it was not a good look. I slept all day on Saturday and it literally took until Sunday night to recuperate. They, on the other hand, went right back out o Sat and asked was I attending....I think I'm too old with too many commitments for that type of lifestyle regularly. But, I did enjoy myself immensely...and even got to talk to the Hubby via Skype right before I dozed off that night (well morning),

5K Color Run for a Cause

I did it!! My first 5K in over a year and it was great fun. This event's theme included being splashed by bursts of color periodically throughout the course. There was pink, blue, yellow, orange, purple and I believe green color bursts and I made it through each one in my all white attire (a stipulation for the run). All proceeds went to Hope Village, a local one-stop shop of resources within the community that serves the disadvantaged, less-fortunate, and those who simple are down on their luck. When I first arrived In DeRidder I volunteered at one of their subsidiaries God's Food Box, a local food bank and pantry, I really enjoyed helping out and giving back to those in need. And it was a great way to really get to know and understand the community of which I was transplanted. I haven't been able to donate time since due to work hours, but I still donate food items as much as I can.

So with a determined spirit, I ran the entire thing with my new Walgreen brand headphones (I lost my Beats ear buds at the gym - still distraught over that) and even held a pretty solid pace. Nonetheless, it would be nice to get it done in under 30 minutes (my time was 43.59) There's always next time...Now if I can just get all of this blue pigment from off of mys skin, the other colors came off pretty easily (I have a feeling this blue is gonna take several attempts).

Let It Snow!!!

It really happened! I can't believe it, I am actually in awe! It snowed in SWLA (Southwest Louisiana)!!! Well this phenomenon of snow is not something new to the natives; I was informed that it snowed quite regularly in their childhoods and they would sled using things like trashcan lids, cardboard boxes, and anything else with a smooth surface that could go down a hill! It reminded me of winters at home in MD and doing the same things in the snow. But as I have been here for a little over 3 years, I have yet to experience this event...until today!

It snowed last night and in preparation for their wintery event, schools were informed that they would be closed on Friday; so Thursday afternoon as the announcement was made, cheers rang out school-wide and made me laugh to myself in my empty classroom. The pure joys of childhood does get me at times :). I, on the other hand, sneered at the thought of the entire parish shutting down for what would be considered flurries up North and thought everyone was seriously overreacting. But I guess the thought of something occuring that hasnt in 3 yrs at minimum could do that to a town.

So we all waited and last night as the temps dropped and the sleet mixture started, I saw no accumulation of snow. However, my friends to the North in Leesville had already begun experiencing their "snowstorm" and posting FB pics! I was now convinced that it was all just another overblown weather forecast. But when I awoke, to my surprise there was a blanket pf snow covering the town! I actually snowed...

I'm sure it was only 1/4" at maximum, but it was snow. And I took advantage of it by taking out the boys (Rah of whom doesn't remember being in significant snow even though he has) and having some family winter fun!

It's the End of the Year

It's the end of the year and I must say it has been quite an eventful one. And as such, this year we have decided to remain in LA for the holidays (even though up until now I'm considering options for a getaway). I can't seem to stay still for long.

I was offered a full-time staff position in my dream classroom, both Garr and Rah enjoyed an organized sport and we're quite the athletes, we got to experience a wonderful Bahamian vacation, and Daddy Swann is embarking on his new career goals and was recently offered the career opportunity he'd been waiting on all year!

I have no doubt that 2014 is going to be even more of a whirlwind; a stress-filled, love-laden, bunch of experiences that when in the moment appear totally overwhelming and all-consuming, but in hind-sight, nothing more than ...life.

Here's to 2014 and all of the obstacles and achievements it has to offer. I'm prepared...

The Child, The Teen, & The Parents

Not quite 2 months since my last my last blog but these kids have been keeping me quite busy. Football season has officially come to an end for both boys and sadly enough no playoffs in sight for either the DJHS Dragons or the Swamp Dragons (well I guess I'm not too sad 'cause I actually get to sleep in at least THIS Saturday). Both Garr and Rah also made honor roll with straight A's and B's and are doing well academically, as for behaviorally....well they are my sons and well I guess genetically inclined to be impulsive (and that's not generally good for overall classroom management). Hopefully, Rah will mellow out as he ages as Garr has done but needless to say it doesn't end with the addition of the teenage factor.

From Swamp Dragons to Just Plain Ole' Dragons

Garrett is on the field now and in his element! Both of my boys are playing football and both are cornerbacks (hilarious). But as Rah is playing for the community based DeRidder Youth Football League, Garrett is playing for the school and as all the city of DeRidder schools carry the same mascot he is a Dragon, of course. In elementary they are "Baby Dragons" and in Junior High School the Dragon changes a bit to look more "adolescent like" and the full-blown Dragons are represented by the one and only DeRidder HS.

Garrett plays for DeRidder Junior High School and is #8. He told me he wanted to play on Friday, so I got him a sports physical on Monday, and he started in his first game that Tuesday.

They ended up losing that first one and he was a bit disappointed but he made up for it in the next game which was a win! Check out the videos below. But it was short lived as the loss their next game, sadly of which he made two bad plays that could have helped the team squeeze out a win (according to him) I didn't make that game as it was in Alexandria and over an hr away. But he has two games scheduled for this week and I'll surely be at both!!

So wish him luck and a phenomenal season along with continued success with his grades as he made all A's and B's on his Progress Report!!!

Robert is finally at the age to join little league and as we have decided to make DeRidder, LA our home for at least he next three years it is time to get him involved in community based sports just as Garrett played little league football, basketball, and baseball when we were in Upper Marlboro, MD (boy time surely flies). Darryl is simply elated at the fact that his boy is playing and is an active team dad helping out with all of the practices. Robert has practice Mon,Tue, and Thurs from 5:30-6:30 and his first game is slated for Sept 28th.

As Garr and Dae threw the ball around, Darryl and I couldn't help but reminisce about the years we spent together at Garret's practices when he was Robert's age and the comparisons are hilarious. Garrett was always doing something at practice - kicking dirt with his new cleats, picking weeds/flowers for mommy, and tackling on instinct (even though its flag) - Robert does exactly the same things, lol

Garr is having his sports physical tomorrow and hopefully he'll be back on the DeRidder Junior High School team, then I will have two athletes in the house and a whole bunch of carpooling and coordinating to do PLUS one super proud dad (even though he's first and foremost a Redskins fan)!!!!

Swann Family End of Summer Fiasco

Summer's ending and the Swann Family took its final season trip to the waterpark. We only found out about this waterpark by chance. We knew of the local amusement/waterpark Blue Bayou/Dixie Landin' in Baton Rouge (about 2 hrs east - halfway point to New Orleans) but as we were on a time crunch and had to head North to Alexandria, I figured I'd investigate if there was something by the way of an amusement park and/or water full in the area that would allow us at least 3/4 hours of fun!

I was delighted to find that there was indeed! Right there in Shreveport, LA (about 2hrs North of DeRidder and 1.5 North of where we were in Alexandria). Splash Kingdom is a Christian operated Waterpark (only in the south) and we jumped at the opportunity to Seek the Kingdom Matthew 6:33 - it was on all of their float tubes! How cool! They play contemporary Christian music over the loud speakers and there are colorful scriptures painted everywhere, but nothing seems out of place or schema - it's far from over bearing. It is a splash park so there were bikini clad individuals and swimwear about, but nothing beyond what is seen at the local pool and totally family centered and oriented - I absolutely loved it!

The park consisted of about 7 large water slides, a huge wave pool (I laughed to myself atone point wondering if it was diluted with Holy Water) and lazy river. It also had a kids area with the normal squirting apparatuses, bridges, kids castles, lagoons, and the like. It was great fun and very reasonable in price (about $17/pp). We paid our admission, we offered meal value chips for an additional $6. Meals consisted of either 2 slices of pizza, a cookie, and a large drink, hamburger curly fries and a drink, or 4 chicken strips, fries, and a drink - for $6! That's surely a deal and went only to enjoy some summer fun! Or you could just eat use cash and eat as you like...

I took Rah on a waterslide. His first, but he was too consumed with riding in the raft that he continuously got stuck (not enough body weight to move it) and wouldn't let it go to slide down normally. At one point he actually stood up inside of the half-tube and I think I went into cardiac arrest! Meanwhile the adjoining side has had like 4 other persons go down successfully. By the time Rah finally emerged at the end of the slide, the park announced that slides would be closed due to the possibility of bad weather! So needless to say, I didn't get to slide - only walk up and down the 3 flights of stairs! LOL. Good thing the lines moved so quickly. I teased Rah that he was the reason that the slides were closed down, but didn't care at all because he got to go down the slide! That booger!!!

So we went back to the wave pool and after Rah scared Darryl by continuously swimming to the rear like he was an Olympian only to get caught up in the waves and disappear and resurface, I figured we'd go to the lazy river so that Daddy Swann wouldn't experience once of those coronaries too as he was still fully clothed besides swim trunks.

I did later coax Mr. Swann into the lazy river, we shared a double raft and I tried desperately not to get my hair completely wet! Natural hair takes forever to dry, good thing Darryl was able to stir the raft away and since he was trying to stay moderately dry also I flipped the raft and dunked him when we exited!!!! LMBO I'm still waiting but I know he's gonna get me back somehow...

We left the park as planned 3 hours later which seemed to coordinate perfectly with the threat of lightening/rain. It never actually rained but one can't take chances with lightening at a water park - and it was announced later that all tickets for the day would be allowed reentry for another time during the season (I don't know of many parks that offer that concession either). So guess what? If its not raining, we're heading back this weekend for Part TWO of Swann Family End of Summer Fiasco and this time I'm going down the slide before Robbie!!!!

We took a wonderful trip to Toledo Bend and had some fun fishing with The Jarden Family. Mr. Jarden is one of my closest friends here in DeRidder and also happens to be the paraeducator who works alongside me in The Swann Class. As we get along so well at work, why not start getting our families together? It took some strategic planning as the families were originally trying to get cabins and stay for a couple days, but we couldn't seem to coordinate the schedules of everyone involved with the cabin availability in addition to the upcoming school year. We settled on a day trip, and what a trip it was...

Heading out super early (7am) and staying well into early evening: the men grilled, Darryl showed everyone who was interested in fishing about fishing, the little ones played in the lake, and I laid out on the sand and soaked up some much needed sun.

We just had fun, talking as friends and families and enjoying each others company. It was a great day and I look forward to the next Swann/Jarden or Jarden/Swann collaboration - (I guess who ever hosts can put their name first, LOL )

Garr Got Glasses

Garr got his new glasses and boy did he need them! Unfortunately he got his vision from me and has been squinting to see for the last two years. I got him glasses a couple years back while he was here for the summer but when he decided to go to school in MD and let someone else wear the glasses (as glasses are cool now) he never saw them again. I only found out about this at the end of the school year when he told me his "declining grades were a result of his diminished sight." I told his father to contact to contact the school and make arrangements with that parent to get them back or have them replaced, I had spent over $250 on those glasses and he had wore them for less than 3 months, Sheesh. Needless to say as I am here in LA and the issue in MD the next time I saw him there were still no glasses, although the parent had provided the money for a replacement pair.

Fast forward to this past school year, with the knowledge that the dang boy can't see and that it impacts his grades AND the promise that glasses would be purchased - well he's here and there are still no glasses, BUT there was braces! I was informed that the "need to correct bad teeth outweighed the current vision dilemma"....arrrgggghhh.

So we are currently working towards straight beautiful and teeth, but he won't be able to see to brush them.... Hmmmmm.

Well being a person that is "sight disabled" and knowing how frustrating it can be to constantly squint and well just plain having common sense - I promptly scheduled an optometrist appointment to again purchase more glasses with the threat (nay promise) that I will power drill the handles into his dang temples if he even thinks of "loaning" them to anyone! I think he fully understands my meaning...

On our way home from the optometrist you should have seen Garr: smiling from ear to ear, looking around at everything, sliding his glasses down and comparing his vision with/without the them as he read street signs, marquees, and license plates. He was like "the world is like in 3D now" and "I want to read everything". To which I quickly replied "well make sure you maintain that mindset over the next 9 months as school starts on the 12th of August and you can read plenty of textbooks!" HA

Family Reunion Weekend on the Mississippi

The Swann Family Spent 4th of July Weekend on the Mississippi River with the kids in the Good ole' NOLA. We had a blast! This year EMF (Essence Music Festival) dedicated a full day Thursday, July 4th to that of Family and held a day for family fun on the waterfront. It was called Family Reunion Block Party or something of the like.We arrived around 3pm Thursday and promptly were treated to dance competitions, goodie bags by sponsors like McDonald's,Walmart and Tonka, wonderful foods, and concerts, and photo ops with kids characters. Biz Markie dee jayed the events and we danced and sang all night until the sky rang with a splendid array of fireworks timed to music that lasted about 15-minutes long out on two massive barges in the middle of the Mississippi. Finally the self-proclaimed "Dance Hall King" himself Cupid came out and led us all in a myriad of line dances until we felt as if we did one more coordinated step we may have died, it was awesome!

We ended out "kid friendly" night with a walk down Bourbon Street to give the boys the Ultimate experience, it was only 10pm so we figured it couldn't be that bad - well that wasn't until I looked down and saw Robbie showing his tummy to some strangers on balconies throwing him beads to which he immediately caught!!!! I instantly snapped a pic and scooped him up and high-tailed it to Canal Street for the nearest trolley to the Garden District to the B & B where we always stay for the most reasonable rates; close enough to walk but far enough for piece of mind on those rowdy nights. Nonetheless we never caught our trolley home as they were all full and simply continued to pass us with standing room only like Metro buses that can't accommodate and the 10-block walk wasn't gonna cut it so we caught a cab back to the rooms, bathed the baby who had developed a new found fright of "The Voo Doo Woman" thanks to the boys and the local attractions and put him to bed.

We then promptly headed back out to the Howling Wolf to catch an 11pm comedy show with the Legendary Mr. Paul Mooney! It was awesome, the closest you could possibly get to the comedic genius of Richard Prior himself...and if your wondering where all of my photos are, well remember that cab ride I spoke of ..... (I think that's where I last can trace it too)! Paul Mooney had me laughing soooo hard, you know he's 80? And still has every bit of whit about him. Darryl said he must be the angriest black man ever! HA!!! Love it!

So besides some candid phone snapshots that were taken by Davaughn (Ebby's son who comes down each summer, I have no pics besides that taken by Darryl at the Howling Wolf). And I had soooooo many - I like to have cried once the reality hit - I would really like to offer the camera for the pics! Man what a shame, my next camera will have automatic WiFi upload for this reason.

But Alas....the next day we visited the NOLA Audubon Museum, Butterfly Gardens, Insectarium, and IMAX theater. It was a great day. Although the aquarium is not as massive as that of the Georgia Aquarium it is extremely nice and quite a good one in comparison - we did not have a chance to visit the zoo as it was raining but at a $120 total admission for 5 people (with the military discount it was well worth it). If you have never had a family friendly day in NOLA it is possible during daylight hours - even though Garrett had the impression that we were going to "club" like he is old enough #1 and like we are friends #2! That boy is really delusional...

I did allow them to get ONE set of beads however after Robbie took the lead and showed his tummy and caught some and they began to pout as if they, 14 and 16 were toddlers...hey it is Bourbon Street!

In celebration of our Pastor and First Lady's pastorial anniversary in the Leesville, LA area the congregation planned a wonderful 50's themed party and welcomed in "Happy Days". All dressed in the best rendition of 50's era apparral everyone had a ball and simply honored our religious leadership. We didn't leave the fellowship hall until late that evening; conversating, watching skits and films, drinking soda pop from the bottle, eating burgers and hot dogs, and everyone just simply having a good time in the company of our Pastor & First Lady.

My wonderful principal, gave me the opportunity to go over to his school during the work day and see his wonderful program. I also was instructed to record it for Daddy Swann who was in MD with Garr at the time so excuse the quality of the video (I was trying to hold the camera and FaceTime him simultaneously to no avail - as you will see).

Robert was even awarded the Perfect Attendance Award, in your face Aunt Ebby; Your kids aren't the only ones who don't miss any days of school (but I guess, I still can't beat their since they started school record)!

Fill a Bag & Feed a Family - Today, Saturday, May 11, 2013

Last week sometime when Darryl bought in the mail I found this brown paper sack and was about to throw it in the garbage along with all of the other junk mail (fliers, advertisements, and credit card offers that we don't EVEN give a second thought) until I noticed that it was printed. On it had a date and information; it was a food drive. A through the mail food drive! What a great idea!!! You were encouraged to fill a bag with non-perishables and deliver them to a person in need, otherwise leave it at your mailbox for your letter carrier on the agreed upon date. I immediately though of disgruntled letter carriers picking up heavy bags of can lad paper sacks to and laughed to myself, but don't pass that on...LOL

Well of course I would participate! One could easily pick up an extra bag of groceries at the store and canned foods are quite inexpensive I would think (even if not, its a great cause). You cold also simply clean out your pantry. People are starving and would readily eat those non-perishables that you have not gotten to and that has been canned in your pantry for the last year! OK, enough suggestions - get to work.

I noticed the bag again today sitting atop the desk as I got up to prepare breakfast so I checked the date, AND IT'S TODAY!!! Needless to say I got right on it. Luckily, I just went grocery shopping yesterday (Why does the Commissary still have mandatory grocery baggage personnel they make you feel so obligate? Its like a underground escort service or something. Maybe"old military likes it, but it frustrates me that you are "obligated" to have bag loaders. I can carry my own bags, push my own cart to the store, and load them in the trunk! This should be totally optional - and if you don't have cash to tip, you are made to feel like you just robbed someone of their sole existence. I wonder if they report back that you didn't have cash to tip, and they put you on a "ate-up service-member's list" - they literally may as well. At least that would bring some humor to this outdated infrastructure. I actually bypassed the Commissary to go the general grocery store simply because I didn't have cash and didn't wanna bother getting singles to tip! Isn't it enough that I just spent $280 in grocery and now I have to pay someone to load them for me when I was perfectly able to load them myself. Just another way to nickle and dime underpaid and overworked soldiers..OK, I digress) but I still have cabinets full of stuff that is non-perishable! So I'm pretty bare now, I generally but fresh or frozen veggies and the like. I think we did well.

So, Rah and I filled a bag. Since we live in apartments we set it atop our community boxes and hope that you all will join with others today to help Stamp of Starvation (I should trademark that) and Fill and Bag And Feed a Family...apartment #52

Well he's not quite a New York Times Bestsellers but he may be one day! His class compiled a bunch of their favorite recipes and then wrote a page each of sequential steps and created accompanying illustration for each. Rah picked his favorite recipe and wrote the steps on how prepare it, he then created his illustration, please take a look. 2013 Special Olympic Games of Southwestern Lousiana - The Swann Class

This past Friday The Swann's Class had the privilege of joining hundreds of others in the area for the annual Special Olympic Games! We represented Beauregard Parrish and of course Carver E.S. and my 2nd and 3rd grade students rocked! 9 out of 14 cygnets (baby swans) boarded a bus around 9am and drove about 45-minutes to Sulpher H.S. in Sulpher, LA where the games where hosted this year. Following the opening ceremonies consisting of welcoming speeches, prayers, and the lighting and running of the torch around the track, all of the teams were dispersed to their individual and group events.

Look, I found two former Swann's at the games - Jayce & Issabella (in 4th Grade now)!

And Mr. Jarden found the KPRC TV Channel 7 Team!

Our single event wasn't slated until 11:30am so we had time to spare and in the interim there were booths set up around the venue for the Olympians to engage in all types of free fun and games where they could win prizes (sort of like in carnival/fair fashion) - and they won so much that we had to find garbage bags to simply lug around all of their loot!

LaShawn visited a tattoo booth and then wouldn't use his right arm from that point on for fear of ruining it; you could only imagine the results!

Dustin's Grandma swaddled in a blanket (it was a crisp morning but warmed up by afternoon).

Afterwards we took a rest break and headed to a snack tent where we were provided with chips, drinks, fruit, and other treats before our event.We had two wonderful class volunteers as Dustin's grandma and aunt helped us wrangle our bunch and ensured they weren't lost in the masses of other participants. Olympians from elementary school age to adulthood were participating in events, so my students were quite impressed as they saw how fast some of the other athletes were running, jumping, and how far they were throwing. They were also intimidated about how big/tall the volunteering athletes from local colleges were (especially Dustin who is tiny and loved football, but was astonished and had to be coaxed into a picture with the McNeese football players).

At the end of the day, "The cygnets" ran well and won many ribbons in the 100-Meter (their only event of the day). LaShawn, who waved to the crowd as he ran down the track and Dustin who stopped after about 10-steps claiming that he was tired (I think he was really embarrassed that everyone was faster than him), seem determined to make me work as I had to run onto the track and finish the event with him!

Cozumel, Mexico

I don't even think I made a wish!

I'm welcoming in the big ole' 35 today by doing absolutely nothing! Darryl has been trying to get me out of the house all day but I refuse (especially since the restaurant is at least a 45-minute drive) but maybe I'll feel like it by then. But for now, I'm content to lounging around and being pampered by 2 out of 3 of my favorite men :)

Darryl and Rah welcomed me home late last night from my week long vacation (birthday trip to myself with my BFF) by cleaning the house. And boy was it cleaned - I actually thought the carpet had been shampooed! LOL, but this morning I was treated to a bottle of limited edition Daisy perfume! I already had the original but when I saw the limited edition I made such a fuss that Darryl must have actually paid attention - I'm addicted to Marc Jacobs perfumes, not simply due to the delectable smell but the lovely bottle! I have every fragrance simply because I love the bottles (I think I may start collecting vintage perfume bottles as a hobby). I cant wait to see what he's gonna come out with later this year.

I flew to Fort Lauderdale on Monday and met up with Niece, from there we hopped on a ship (that didn't sink, I might add) and took a quick week long get-a-way to the Keys and Cozumel. I really needed some sun and couldn't think of anyone more willing to drop everything and meet up with me for some! My plan was to relax and sunbathe and as Niece doesn't like laying out in the sun (she literally covers with a towel, I find this amusing) - we both like to shop so the compromise works well. And she'll sacrifice a bit for me.

Day 1 - We slept as planned. Got of the ship in Key West (we both have been there many times). Did a bit of shopping, and re-boarded for sunbathing, drinks, and more relaxation before dinner.

Day 2-3 - Went just as Day 1 but add room service for breakfast (that's the only way we'd make it - and that continued until we left) and then a formal dinner. After sunbathing, we took pictures, went to a comedy show, and partied all night long! Now this generally doesn't happen as we fall asleep by 10pm trying to convince ourself to go out but then deciding that sleep is simply more appealing! Ahhh, the joys of getting older. I tell you if I'm not already out of the house and dressed by 8 /9pm for an evening out - it's simply not gonna happen. Walking the local markets in Cozumel (didn't even bother with the beach - both of us have been there, done that.).

Day 4 - More laying out and just relaxing poolside (exactly what I intended to do). They even had a life-sized chess set of which I "attempted" to set up and play. Darryl gets mad because I never play at home with him - but quickly informed me that I set the board up wrong. That's why I just posed with the pieces! LOL

Swann Family Easter

I, like many moms, have been preparing the family all month to put forth our best appearances for the Easter Holiday. It's by far the most important day in Christianity to me as it represents the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. So as this month has progressed I have been attempting to rid Rah of the entire "Easter Basket" debauchery and instill in him the significance of the day itself. Now, I'm not going to take away his "Easter" in the worldly sense, but I do want him to know the reason for the holiday - and it's surely not about a "big ole' bunny, or eggs, or even mommy trying to color coordinate the entire family". But, we all get caught up in it at times, which brings me to today's blog.

Earlier this week, Rah had his Easter Hunt at school, a wonderful class picnic, an dyed a single egg! I must say that experience in of itself seemed to satisfy him of his "pagan" celebratory spirit. We went through the storage shed, found an old basket, and used the leftover decorative mesh to create a handle (I really see no point of going beyond that especially if he wasn't to use it again)! I had a closet full of basket from years past but I gave them away for last year's festivities.

So, Darryl and I volunteered at the school and made Rah's class Easter Egg Hunt a family event and had a ball doing so, check out the pics.

Picnic Lunch Time - the bad parents we are actually forgot to bring his bag lunch (I really don't remember seeing that portion of the memo - Reading is Fundamental) but "Great Teachers" are always prepared for unprepared parents, so Mrs. Choat had extra lunches packed at her own expense. I felt horribly, but was truly grateful otherwise Darryl was gonna have to make haste to McDonald's because Rah would have not had it!

You see, things like that - not to mention all of the other things "us" teachers supply for forgetful parents (like myself in this instance) as well as underprivileged families are not reimbursed through salary. We don't get overtime, but it's required as we work it to ensure the needs of the students are met. But some things we just do it on our own, as the children can not continuously "pay" as a result of their circumstances and over the years it adds up. I have spent upwards of $1000/class a year and that's me "reeling it in". It can't be helped when you see a child with too small clothes, who hasn't eaten, or who is being mocked/tormented, it doesn't just affect their academics, it effects their entire existence - their potential. A teacher embodies that to the point of self-detriment at times; I know I'm guilty of it. It's a hard thing to balance - but our reductions in pay, lack of support from parents and the public, and the consistent "dumbing-down" of the education system simply so it can be monetized by testing, curriculum, and textbook corporations tuns "small issues into monstrous ones" overtime. OK, I will now step off of my soapbox.

Easter Egg Hunt Live (it was a bit windy):

So, of course when we got home Rah is trying to eat everything out of his basket and I told him to wait until Easter, he just had a school Easter Hunt because Easter is on Sunday so there will be no school, Spring Break just started. Which brings us to today...Sunday.

Sunday
We get up and prepared for church, I sleep a bit past my time although I have much to do, I'm confident we can get out of the house and to church by 11am for Easter service. I get dressed and get Rah bathed. Darryl on the other hand hasn't bothered to iron his white shirt and its still in the bag (to him this means it's ironed). As I try to inform him that he needs to iron it, he ignores me and begins to put on a wrinkly shirt. Now I'm getting frustrated. We live a half-hour from church and I don't wanna be late, not late to church on any day, but definitely not late on Easter Sunday when everyone and their mamma's come - we were not even gonna be able to get a seat! We needed to leave out by 10:30am at the latest for service, it was nearly 10:45am - I was officially blown.

He knew the time. He knew we were late and that I was clearly upset so to cheer me up he must have decided to put on these Angry Bird briefs that I bought him to match Rah's. I bought them Christmas, they were adorable. I figured him an Rah could wear matching undies but he refused to wear them as they were briefs. He had them on now and began to get dressed, I laughed. I couldn't help it. I laughed hysterically - but it was no time for joking we needed to leave. So as I went and continued to get Rah finished and then to begin getting Darryl's shirt to iron and all of a sudden he started to fuss at me like "What, Kenchasa? What now?" and in that moment I wanted in all my might to just walk away and let him just be on his own, but I decided not to as he was a reflection of me. I decided to tell him "You can't wear Angry Bird underwear with white pants!" As through his unlined white slacks, you could clearly see a big ole' red Angry Bird head on his crotch and when he turned around, another across his bottom! I truly wish I would have gotten a picture...

We finally left the house. It was now 11:00 and I began to feel nauseous. I took my medicine but hadn't time to ea, I knew the cause. I eventually had to stop at a gas station and get an orange juice, which I drank immediately while still holding the cooler door open (you should have seen the clerk watching me). I did pay for it. I quieted my "kitty cat tummy". Now for those of you who don't know, "kitty cat tummy" is what Ebby and I call it when you have to vomit but you are forced to do it all delicately like a cat/kitten (if you've ever seen a ca vomit) due to your surroundings. I can guarantee you I would have been "kitty cat" vomiting in church right on the side of the pew - not a good look.

So we drive on; now there is construction - one lane closed and again I think to myself "dang they are gonna get overtime and holiday pay. Working on Easter to complete this stretch of road, don't seem like it's that essential." We arrive at church at good half-hour late to a wonderful service but average congregation size, with a great message - not an Easter message but great nonetheless. I thought maybe Pastor was doing something different as he does at times, so no big deal - and then I learned that 10th Mountain (the local unit was in rotation) so that could attribute for the nominal sized congregation. People weren't flashy or "decked" but we don't have that kind of church so it still didn't dawn on me. After service, we said our farewells, and I stopped and spoke to a young lady who commented on my natural hair as I admired her little girls'.

It was then that Sis. Rhonda asked her to make sure she came back "next Sunday, EASTER SUNDAY, as we would be having a bunch of activities for the children!" All I could do is smile and laugh. I went straight to find Darryl and when I told him he was like, "and you made me feel all bad as you fussed all morning about making us late to Easter service!" I burst out laughing again - it all made since now (the construction, the congregation, the service....so, Easter was Next Sunday!)

Well, Darryl said, I can consider today as a "trial run" and Ebby said only a "true heathen" wouldn't know when Easter was... LOL

But in my defense we've had all these events this week that led up to Easter being this Sunday. And I don't work so I don't know day from day - I know Easter is on Sunday and this year, it's the last Sunday of the month. As school was released on Spring Break, I just knew this was the last Sunday of the month. So, as I told Rah, I'm glad it's not about the clothes either because we surely wore ours today!

It's his Kindergarten Class Picture and he looks as innocent as can be. You wouldn't think that he spends an average 3 out of 4 days either in "time out", getting placed in "in-school" suspension, trapping students in the bathroom - or only just recently punching someone in the belly because "he wanted to" or being pulled from the cafeteria for throwing a corn-on-the-cob at someone! The list goes on. I think Mrs. Maricle has our numbers on speed dial because I surely have an entire folder of parental triplicates with undesired behaviors, awaiting signatures.

But for now, I just look at this pic and see my adorable little man!

Birthday Boy

It all started February, 18, 2013 when Robert Wesley Swann awoke and realized that it was in fact his birthday! This was quite a feat in of itself as it was the first time he knew it was his birthday without being reminded (he'd been monitoring the days) and as the day approached and had at last arrived he was "six"!

Robert's birthday fell on Presidents' Day this year as it had before and I'm sure will again - so we made arrangements for school snack day to encompass his birthday celebration on Tuesday (school was out on Friday for Professional Development). Gotta love birthdays that coincide with holidays (a guaranteed day off school and when you reach adulthood - work, if your lucky). My birthday being April, 13th generally coincided with Spring Break, but as I got further along in school it seemed to always fall on the day we were slated to return to school (I know, sucks right?). Garrett's being April 8th also fell within Spring Break (I think he may even get an Easter birthday within his lifetime).

On Saturday, we ventured to Chuck E. Cheese (a mere 45-minute ride to the nearest location). Rah had a ball, played well with local children, ate a bunch of pizza, and was able to get a pic with Chuck himself. He was however, "found" in the scheduled "birthday section" of the venue seated at a nearby table attempting to take over someone else's party! I had to pry him away and explain to him that it was not his party or his "actual birthday", nor was he invited so he could not continue to disturb the party goers...he did not take that well. But after threats of leaving the entire venue altogether he quickly composed himself and went on his way without further incident.

On Sunday, after church Rah and Daddy had "Daddy Time" and went to the movies. Rah loves his daddy so much and their personal time spent together makes my heart smile. It's such a great bonding experience and I'm only privy to the most general details - of which I wait anxiously to be provided. Darryl is such a wonderful dad and Rah can't get enough of him. He imitates everything he does, from his fascination with anything related to the military to his love of video games, football, and fishing. Their most recent fascination with guns is not quite my favorite, however Daddy Darryl is teaching Rah everything necessary about gun safety and ownership at an age appropriate level - I am very secure in his competence.

Monday - The Day! Rah comes into our room and is simply excited. He is soooo happy that he is" six", it's hilarious. The first thing he does is asks me to measure him on his growth chart. Now, I generally make such measurements annually or semi-annually at max, but he was so insistent that I did because he "was six" and "got much bigger than he was when he was five" (just 24-hours ago)! LOL. So upon measuring him, there was no significant difference, less than a centimeter and if I measured accurately probably millimeter, but as I measured using a sharpie and just drew a stroke on a poster from where I perceive his big head reached, it resulted in growth. Now this made him basically "shut me down" in a "Boosha", "told you so" fashion - that since he was six he grew. He even came to a conclusion that the 6" marking on the poster corresponded to his new age as the 5" mark corresponded to that of him at 5; now I tried to tell him that was in fact not the case but he was not having it - so I just let it go.

Now, that he had accomplished that feat he went on to bigger and better things - like his birthday party. So he asked me "When is my party?" I explained to him that instead of having a big party this year, he went to Chuck E. Cheese on Saturday, he had special Daddy Day on Sunday, and on Tuesday he will distribute "treat bags" to his friends and have cupcakes. Well this did not satisfy Mr. Robert at all and he told me so directly. He stated that it was not "authentically his birthday if he did not have a party". Now, taken aback by this I quickly explained that one does not need a party to have a birthday and this was in fact "an authentic" birthday and he, myself, and daddy would all gather tonight after dinner and have cake and ice cream, sing Happy Birthday, and he could blow out candles. To this Robert replied, that "without friends and presents my birthday doesn't exist and it is not really a birthday." So I again responded by asking if daddy and I not enough? Are we not your friends as well as family and wouldn't he have friends at his celebration tomorrow? Had he not just had two wonderful gifts of a trip to Chuck E. Cheese and a special Daddy Day? Robert went to his room without a reply and I'm assuming after thinking some time, saw that I was clearly hurt by not being viewed "important" so he said "you and daddy are my friends and cake and ice cream with my family is a good birthday. But, at school with my friends I'm still not getting presents, I'm giving them gift bags, their not giving me anything." Lawd!!! So, I explained to him that he would also get a "treat bag" but birthdays' are about sharing more than receiving and he needs to be more grateful. We spoke more about generosity and for then, he moved on...for then.

On scene comes Daddy Darryl who decided to FINALLY rescue me and take Rah for an impromptu outing. Rah dresses himself as usual - I give him freedom of creativity, he generally doesn't match and has on shorts but hey, its fairly warm but I notice he has on these sneakers that he has been trying to wear for over a year that are simply too big! Now, these shoes along with a bag of clothes (hand-me-downs always welcomed) were a donation from Janelle's son, Christopher. He's almost 2-years older than Rah but quite taller so his foot is much bigger. I had packed all of the items Rah would eventually grow into in a bag and placed them in his closet. Now, within this bag is a pair of Sketcher sneakers. Rah has been dying for a pair of Sketchers that light up and Darryl had tried getting him some before but couldn't find his size. Now, I know Sketchers may not be considered fashionable to most of you, but to a kid, anything with lights rock (so if he wants to wear Buzz Light Year's, I'd buy them) rather than buying $100 Jordan's, not that Sketchers are that inexpensive. Anyhow, he must have went through this bag and found these Sketchers...bring on the battle!

I said, "Rah, why do you have on those shoes?" "They are too big, put them back and stay out of that bag." He immediately told me that they in fact fit now because he was six! They did not fit a five year old, but they fit him now, because he grew (as I just measured), plus they are six year old shoes! So, again I'm trying to explain to him that this is not logical, but all of my speaking is in vain. Finally, Darryl tells me he has his foot pressed all the way to the front and he wants to wear them because he thinks they're "fast"! Oh my word!!! I'd never though of that!

All this time, he'd been trying to get those shoes was because he thought they were "fast shoes". Now Darryl of course told him that this is in fact not a possibility, but I am soooo delighted by this innocence that I just have to play along. So Rah quickly goes to the entry way and tiger crouches down and runs over to me. Man you would have sworn Edward the vampire from Twilight had entered my room. HA HA HA HA HA I laughed so hard I could barely breathe, I told him that in fact those shoes were surely fast - I hadn't the heart to tell him to take the off after that and as he and Darryl left immediately went online to www.sketchers.com to order my baby some Sketchers in his size. So, I guess he would get a "real present" yet (though not today).

But Daddy Darryl was a step ahead of me. Darryl and Rah came back with a pet from Walmart. Welcome Firero (Robert named him, maybe because he's red???)

Firero is a Beta fish and a wonderful first pet. I think Robert will be a wonderful pet owner, too. I told you Daddy Swann was a wonderful dad. And not only that, they went online together to research Firero and his habitat, behaviors, and how to care for him properly. Robert related all of this information to me, I was truly proud of them both (I love "teachable" moments)!

But alas he did not (last that is)...RIP Firero 2/23/2013. We were informed that Firero was old and we think possibly blind (if you looked closely at his eyes they were clouded, like he had cataracts). Can a fish have cataracts? LOL! Which may explain why he wouldn't eat when we put food in the tank, maybe he couldn't see it but wouldn't he sense the changes in motion of the water? Hmmmm. He'd just float and free fall and then regain himself and rise and move a little (kinda like a old man nodding off for a nap in a recliner and awaking suddenly to continue a conversation) but I guess that's what happens when you but a pet from a Walmart. So, after breaking the news to Rah who took it remarkably well when we told him we thought he was just told and tired, Daddy Darryl went to a real pet store this time and we welcomed "Blue Ray" into the family later that day! Seeing Blue Ray we truly noticed the difference between a young/healthy vs. sick /old fish and he has been thriving member of the family ever since!

He has a wonderful personality too - along with his iridescent hues of reds, purples and greens. He follows you around the tank and charges the top when you feed him. Darryl loves feeding and "playing" with him more than Rah and believe as he is "aggressive" and swells up or puffs out his gills when he catches his reflection in the glass of the tank, thinking there is another fish present. We have even linked Rah's school behavior into feeding him - so if he gets a "green" (good) day he can feed him before school and that night, however if he gets a yellow (average) day he may only feed him in the evening; a red (bad) day results in no feeding from Rah. Darryl has taken over the feeding at such times otherwise, poor Blue Ray would surely meet Firero's unfortunate fate due to starvation!

Camping Out

As I had been gone for nearly a month "the hubby" was truly happy and eagerly anticipating my arrival - so much so to my "treat" (let's say) he rented a log cabin about an hr away at Toledo Bend! Now we generally visit Toledo Bend in the summers and have BBQ's with friends as the boys frolic in the water and I catch some sun (as its the closest and cleanest thing to the beach in the area) but we've never used its facilities otherwise. AND we have always gone to the TX side (which equates to coming to a fork in the road and making a left instead of a right) but boy did it make a world of difference when it came down to what we wanted to do!

We had made that "right" by mistake one time and ventured to the LA side but only found trailers, dilapidated campgrounds, and RV's and immediately hightailed it outta there in the other direction! Now, I've been in trailers that are nicer than my current apartment, believe me - it must be connotation they conjure; it must just be permanently embedded from my city upbringing (like living a stone's throw from the "projects" was such a bourgeoisie living experience, LOL). And although we are and have been Southern transplants for close to 6-years now, it's something about seeing campers/RV's and trailer communities that just makes an area unappealing to me - especially when it appears as if it's no longer a getaway but a way-of-life when it's supposed to be a getaway. If I'm gonna "rough it" at a campsite, I really don't want the impression that I am there with "permanent residents" (it could be just me, but hey). And maybe that was it. The area seemed more like a community than a campground. But not one in which I would like to be, one in which "Freaky Jason" or "Micheal Myers" was gonna wander into from down the road outta their nearby housing development. OK - I think I've drawn the appropriate image.

The other thing was, as sweet as the thought was of "the hubby" to plan such a romantic getaway - it was the last thing I wanted to do! I had been away for over three weeks - all I wanted to do was sleep in my own bed, lounge in my PJ,s, and take in my family. I didn't wanna be away from Rah anymore time, I wanted to be with them both. But, I only had the nerve to tell him the latter (he doesn't read the blog - no worries, LOL). So he quickly changed the romantic getaway into a family getaway and what else could I do but oblige!

I arrived home Wednesday night, packed and grocery/supply shopped all day Thursday and we headed out first thing Friday morning. Meanwhile all of the luggage and laundry from my travels was still piled in the hallway and my house was a complete mess as "my boys" had been living as "independent souls" since I had not been home - All I could do is think of back being in my bed first chance I get back from this family getaway and the pile of housework that now awaited me (insert expletive and exhaustion).

Now, I knew what I was in for because as I stated earlier, we had stumbled upon this place a few years back when we went the wrong way so I had accepted that - I did 8-years ARMY, I camped outside, I dug holes for bathroom usage - couldn't be worse than that? The weather was crisp and cool low to mid-50s, rain was expected but not for the first couple days, we had the option for a cabin if we so desired ( "the hubby" was thoughtful in that regard) he knows I can be finicky, but I guess that was also because it was originally a romantic getaway, my bad. But, nonetheless I was ready to rough it, and I knew Rah would enjoy that more - especially the campfire and making S'mores. It was just the mere fact of the timing that bugged me - had this trip been just one week later, I would have had no issue, but I had to "suck it up" because I needed and wanted to spend time with my family and he had been so thoughtful, if this was the plan, so be it! But dang, did I want to be on my pillow top, under my comforter, and walking through my house without the need of bathing with shower shoes! Ahhhh...just the simple luxuries!

We all dressed in layers and packed the staple necessities to eat, drink, entertain, and care for ourselves in case of an emergency. We did not bring any forms of electronics - we were going "family time" full throttle! When we arrived to our surprise the campgrounds had received a complete overhaul! There were updated cabins, the campgrounds were well manicured, and it appeared it was newly sectioned off according to your method of transportation/sleeping accommodation (i.e. campers/RV area, cabin area, and tent area) it was much more aesthetically pleasing, I must say! I was automatically put to ease. Maybe a few others had shared/expressed similar views of mine. Or maybe this had been a completely different campground. This is the largest man-made body of water in the South - we came initially looking for a beach like atmosphere summers ago and what we we saw was the total opposite, maybe it just threw us for a loop. With the long stretch of shore that accompanies it, there must be varying degrees of what one may deem suitable to live. I now felt a since of ease (of which I didn't feel I needed to feel a since of ease about in the first place), if you can follow.

The inside of the cabin was just as nice and incorporated all the updated essential amenities, it felt as if we were in a little hotel log cabin in the woods: full kitchen (fully stocked with cookware and utensils) w/stove, refrigerator/freezer, and microwave, 1-bedroom with a wardrobe (full bed - you must provide your own linen), 1- full bathroom/wet room with seated shower (you must provide your linen), open living room/dining room with sofa and dining table w/extensions, and a flat screen TV complete w/satellite cable in addition to a spacious loft area overhead (Rah had a ball up there). I mean what more could you want, maybe a washer a dryer? They had the facilities right on site within walking distance and a general store should you have forgotten anything else.

We ended up having to pitch our tent inside - as we had of course, scared Rah so much with tales of "Big Foot" that the last thing he wanted to do was sleep outdoors, HA! We gathered wood for the fire, and Darryl chopped it with his new axe (he just had to buy it), we climbed trees to see who could get the highest (Darryl won of course), we had nature walks and answered Rah's million questions, grilled fish, burgers, hot dogs, and corn, we made Smores of which none of us could finish - those things are way too much (and that's saying a lot for me since I like anything sweet), told Rah more spooky stories and scared him by throwing rocks in the woods and making sounds by throwing our voices (Darryl even said he had to go check on something just to go the other way and tap on the side of the house, Rah's heart could have jumped from his chest as he crept quietly to me for safety and told me to "stay quiet and still so we wont be seen"), and lastly we just sat on bench swings watching in the views as Rah skipped rocks and fed ducks. It was simply perfect.

The cabin was very large; it could easily accommodate 7 - we have agreed to go back - we actually stayed an additional day. Well, we were going back and forth with the idea but hadn't quite settled on a firm decision as the following day called for rain yet but as we were heading out for church services Sunday morning the truck wouldn't start - we felt the decision was made for us, LOL! We lounged all day on Sunday in the cabin as the rain prevented much more and that was perfectly fine for us adults, not too much so for a 5 year old so when it settled down a bit he was allowed out and had a grand old messy time in the mud, leaves, and such!

We had no cellphones - Darryl did not bring his and mine had died, thus not many pics to share - yeah, I know. Campground contacted a tow truck to get the truck home (yeah, and hour Glad, we have great insurance); the campground security also took him on base where he borrowed a friend's vehicle so we finished our "family getaway"! Rah and I stayed at the cabin while all of this took place, he didn't arrive back until around 2am (insisting on giving me a quick review on gun use before he left like I was gonna have to defend our homestead). He's so dramatic at times! I rolled my eyes the entire time as 1. I know how to use a gun and 2. Seriously, we're at at campground that is monitored 24-hrs by security and under the jurisdiction of the military.

So after awaking the next morning and creating a few more memories, we packed and cleaned ensuring we left as little carbon footprint as possible and headed back home. There would be 2 more car exchanges before we finally made it there and got the truck up and running - but, hey you can't have a camping trip without a good camp story! And there you have the Swann Family Version.

My Goddaughter Iyanna

While I was in DC, I wasn't in "stealth" mode this go 'round and was able to visit many friends and family members. I can never visit everyone and that's always the difficulty when you live far away but I've learned over the years that I also can't stretch myself thin trying to accommodate everyone or feel guilty by not succeeding - because it'll never happen, so why bother. I'm only one person and although pretty darn super if I say so myself, I am not Superwoman.

This time I got a chance to spend some QT with my one and only goddaughter. Iyanna and I had a day of pampering at a kids spa in Bowie, MD. We've had a difficult time bonding as I moved when she was much younger, and summer visits, and occasional gifts just don't make up for true time together. So, after a couple of our other plans fell through, I finally got her overnight and truly babied and spoiled her rotten. She's the little girl I always wanted but was never blessed with biologically.

There isn't a birthday of holiday that goes by that I don't go beyond out of control with stuff for her. Shopping for a little girl outdoes that of little boys by far, raising two boys has robbed me of this experience and I just go crazy and splurge on her whenever I can. But I think if I were local it'd be more quality instead of quantity.

Yanna and I were both treated to a mani & pedi, facial, and make-up for $95 - the "mommy and me" package! It was truly, to die! First, the decor was delightful all shades of purples and the chairs were giant cell phones and cupcakes. The music was of "kid-bop" origin and the entire staff was teen girls, how cute! So for little ones, it was like getting your nails done by a big sister - the only adults were the hairstylists and the receptionist. We were given terrycloth robes embossed with colorful details and escorted to the pedicure area. I allowed Yanna free reign to choose our colors, and boy did she! LOL

While having our pedicures we were served fruit punch from colorful yet plastic "grown-up" glasses and had our choice of snack (Ritz bits, Oreo cookies, or gummy bears) served from a silver platter. We were really being pampered - I don't get this type of service when I get my regular pedicure! Now, as I said it's teen manicurists and specifically for kids so don't expect a pumice to be pulled out or nippers to get ingrown nails, but they do cut down nails, file, buff, massage, polish, and design wonderfully. You have to remember this is for children - so they generally have soft feet unlike some adults! LOL

Afterwards we were led to the manicure tables of which Yanna picked another three colors for our fingers! By this time she was into everything, she even suggested that she needed a massage because her back was sore (of course this made me laugh hysterically) as one, "her back was sore?" From what? Carrying her backpack. And two, she had confused the dressing room partitions for a massage room, they actually hold fashion shows for little ones who have their b-day parties there - after being pampered they get to play dress-up, walk the runway, and then have a photo shoot! How cute is that? Ikr - I'm gonna see if her mom will allow her next b-day to be hosted there.

Lastly, we received a facial. You know your skin gets loose and you need to keep it taunt and while also keeping those bags under your eyes away. So we got yogurt face masks and cucumber eye treatments (of which we nibbled at while the treatment ran its course). LOL I opted not to have the face as I just placed tinted moisturizer on that morning (I really need some sun) but, that didn't stop me from partaking in the rest of the treatment. Yanna, opted for a makeup application of her own afterwards and after seeing all of her color choices I decided to allow her to be the "beautiful one" all by herself this time around! HA HA HA

It was a great day, I ended up getting a few pics printed out and creating a framed collage for "My Yanna" to hang in her room to always remember our special day. We tend to keep so many pics electronically that no one has the ability to hold an image in their hands without a mini-computer.
I'll treasure the day always also. I only wish we were closer and could have many more opportunities to spend quality time together.

Presidential Inauguration 2013

I planned and attended The Second Inauguration of President Barack Obama just as I had four years prior in 2009. This year however the forecast predicted weather at least 20 degrees warmer in the nation's capital and crowd in the hundred-thousands instead of millions - so we opted to leave Ebby's 9am instead of 5! We gathered the crew of last year's able participants and headed down to the National Mall (most people from the city consider this act foolish and watch it from their televisions right along with the rest of the viewing world) - but alas, we again opt for the adventure, and boy did we get it.

This year we took the boys (Davaughn, London, and Garrett) as they are teenagers and should be able to fully receive/interpret the symbolism of the moment. Well, the first contrast noticed between this year's inaugural festivities and the priors was that the closest exit on the subway to the grounds was L'Enfant Plaza! All other stations were closed off as a crowd control measure (this was truly surprising as the crowds were said to be much smaller). Last year we exited at the Smithsonian exit and merely walked across the National Mall to our designated spot on the grass where we felt we had optimal viewing. Now, that since this discovery, we were pushed further from our destination (but only if we knew how far). The atmosphere remained was electric and the actual inauguration speeches weren't slated to begin until 10:30 or 11am, so I used the opportunity on the train as a time to teach my son and nephews a lesson on chivalry and had them offer their seats to older ladies who suspiciously took them, but obviously had never experienced such a thing on the crowded DC Metro by a young man in skinny jeans...lol

The exit of the Metro was "interesting" (an escalator was broken, typical Metro) and an presidential impersonator was causing a stir with photo ops. We literally stood on the platform for another 20- minutes simply attempting to exit the underground station. We had to hold onto each other to stay together. It would have been beneficial at this time to have color coordinated hats like many groups opted (I held Gar closely). The view upon exiting the subway was euphoric and historic, once again!

But then, it was put aside as we were herded down barricaded paths in the wrong direction! We could clearly see where we wanted to go (it was directly in from of us - The National Mall grounds) The Capitol Building immediately to the right, but that it not the direction to which we were being funneled. We were being pushed to the left in the completely opposite direction!!!! We were being pushed towards the Washington Monument, closer and closer it appeared and as we looked back we could only catch a glimpse of The Capitol Building. We could not cut across due to the barricades of steel and tunnels that guided us, we were literally cattle, not even being allowed to stop and graze for fear of being trampled. People were growing angry, disgruntled, you could feel the mood shifting from one of excitement to frustration and ambivalence. We had no idea where we would be let out on The National Mall or when, if ever this endless walk would stop - it finally did after about another 45 minutes (not kidding - 45 minutes). We were able to make a left, finally! We entered The Mall, only to be bombarded with the propaganda of the day - fliers, pins, cups, pendants, even Obama condoms! They had everything. I planned on buying things for my friends back home, but I surely didnt plan on carrying things all day - so this aspect f the day ould have to wait.

We were truly far from our designated area - about twice the distance further back than 2009, we were just about to be relegated to acceptance when the crowd then again shifted, You cant be serious! It was moving again!!!We began walking now towards The Capitol Building, down through the grass of The Mall this time (crowd control) I said to myself after I few choice words to others after Garr got separated and was unable to get his way back to me and pleading desperately with his eyes (he can be so shy at times, I have to remember he's only 13) - I could see him, but he couldn't see me- and grown behind adults through my pleads were not being moved by "friendly tones"(I guess my newly adopted Southern home was not working in my favor) - I had to take it back to my Northern origin to get my point across - all was eventually remedied and I had my Garr by my side.

Crowd Control...It took us twice as long to get out of the area and even longer to get home to due to a subway train breakdown and several other closed stations. Ultimately, the last go around, with less "crowd control" the situation moved much smoother and we got home smoother when we had to walk the highway (I-395 which they closed) to get home, it stayed open this go around. I literally considered walking it this time!

"Crowd control" ruined some of the events significance for me. I was spent by the time we carved out an area for ourselves and finally realized we had no essentials: water, chairs, blankets. We had none of that last time but we had not exerted all of our energy either. Food and drink was to my right (a mere 20-feet away), so was a toilet facilities - but I wasn't in the mood. I just needed to hear the President speak and go home. I had enough already.

And then the cold hit, I didn't feel it at first...but it came. It started with my hands and I had no gloves or pockets, then my feet. It literary felt as if I didn't have on shoes or socks. I borrowed gloves from Janelle (Praise Jesus) and began moving around. I'm in it now, Lets get this thing going - at that moment it was truly decided. That although I was in my hometown, I was never to live permanently in the DMV (DC, Maryland, and Virginia) again - I need temperatures that do not dip below 50 degrees in daytime hours.

And through all of that, although in my opinion, the events of the day did not capture the sense of euphoria of the first time around. When the President appeared, it was all worth while; the crowd erupted!!!

Soooooooooo.....

It's been a while huh?
Well let me close out 2012 before entering 2013. The Christmas holiday was wonderful, even though we had to head to the local Lowes for a "fresh" tree as there are no "pop-up" tree lots straddling the corners of parking lots, abandoned storefronts, and malls - as you'd find up North. It was pretty surprising as we pretty much live in a dang forest (well a swamp) but nonetheless - Santa came for Rah and he prepared for the night by baking Santa cookies (oatmeal raisin, Santa's favorite) and a mixture of Reindeer food for his noble steed, you can't forget the reindeer, ya know.

He even sprinkled the mixture outside (well more like poured it all in one big clump) so that the reindeer wouldn't come into the house and trample all over the furniture! LOL. We decorated the tree with Mardi Gras beads keeping true to our adopted hometown and it all went off without a hitch. Rah really enjoyed his holiday - and the grown-ups had a pretty good time too! But I must say, cabin fever set in pretty quick and we were all ready to get out of the house and get away by the time the New Year rolled around (some more than others).

And to top it all off he wanted a "monster truck with a remote controller". Well, the one I saw back in Oct./Nov. that looked as if it were big enough for him to ride, could no longer be found so I completely gave up. There were others similar but not as big and since we'd already outdone ourselves - and Rah was straddling the "Naughty List" (scratch that ON the "naughty list) I simply wasnt getting him one. But, Mrs. Smith bought him one anyway. Check out the video...
