Can we all just take a moment to appreciate how great of an album Howlin' is...yeah... it's pretty great.

Australian psychedelic/dance band Jagwar Ma made their way onto our radar a long time ago. It was hard to not instantly fall in love with their incredibly unique sound and infectiously catchy vocals. Their debut album included "Come Save Me" "The Throw" and "Uncertainty", tracks that have been some of our favorites for a while now. Put simply, we can't get enough of these guys.

We also recently had the pleasure of getting in a few words with Gabriel Winterfield of Jagwar Ma.

1. How did it all happen? What brought Jagwar Ma together ?

Jono and I grew up in the same scene in Sydney, and by chance we started collaborating on stuff for fun in our spare time on the weekends. it all just kind of rolled on from there

2. What's your favorite food ?

Japanese, french and Persian are all my favourite cuisines, and the occasional cheeseburger

3. What inspired you to get into music?

I grew up with music in my house, I find it hard to imagine a world without it. I started learning the violin when I was 4 and it resonated with me deeply, but I soon moved into playing other instruments and discovering guitar and I always liked singing whenever I could.

4. Top 5 songs ?

In all the millions of songs I couldn't possibly reduce my taste to 5 songs. but I will put down five tracks I think deserve to be on a list of sorts.

Working on our next album.

8. What's the wildest experience you've ever had while on tour?

Going from playing a show in Acapulco to playing a show in Vancouver in less than 24 hours was pretty interesting. 24

Today is a good day. Ben Plant ala Miami Horror has dropped the first remix he's done in about 4 or 5 years. I remember the ol' school MH remix days- back when synth music was just starting to grow in Australia, and consequentially around the world. The Miami Horror remix of Sober by Childish Gambino (originally meant to be a cover) is flat out sick. Expect rich, 80s synth undertones and creamy, dreamy vocals. A fitting remix-comeback from Miami Horror indeed.

2 Friends + Summer Disco Tape

So recently I made two new friends haha (terrible joke)... but seriously, these past few weeks I came in contact with a very interesting dance-house duo called Two Friends. LA based Matt Halper + Eli Sones have been making dancey-house music for quite a while now, getting some major hype after dropping a few remixes for Milky Chance and Urban Cone not too long ago.

Recently though I've been sold on their latest edit- a sick remix of Vicetone's ''Angels''. The track is everything you'd expect of a banger summer dance track, and it's just about perfect for big party settings- I know, I gave it a spin this past weekend myself! Another sick track I've been digging is their remix for Milky Chance's ''Flashed Junk Mind'', which is totally bomb- I've linked it below as well.

Be on the lookout for this LA based duo, they've been growing steadily over the past year or so and I expect big things from them in the future. Also, I did a new disco-house set filled with some of the sickest tracks I've heard all summer (with nods to a few Valerie era classics ofcourse), so be sure to check that out as well- special thanks to Matt and Eli for some early support!

Not quite 80's revival, not quite vaporwave--Motion Cntrl are unqiue blend of sound and style. The vocals bear a strong similarity to many on the Nu Wave front such as Ronika or Kristine. That being said, with the backdrop of a much darker and complex sound, the vocals and the music as a whole take on much more different shape than that of Nu Wave and 80's influenced music.

Coming off there fairly recent 6 track release, Fun To Be Had, Ur Face is a refreshing and stringy Nu Disco original. That being said it carries vibes of Kido Yoji and Pony Pony Run Run and is a great end of summer anthem.

and that's the thing about Future Classic... They just can't release bad music... After their last couple of releases, namely ''something about you'' (ala Hayden James) and ''Jungle'' by Panama, the label has definitively raised the bar for what constitutes worthwhile electro-indie music.

Get to know the name ''Midnight to Monaco''. Ricky Ducati and Donnie Sloan (aka Midnight to Monaco) are perhaps the most talented artists I've encountered in years. Their debut single (on Future Classic), ''Suicide'' is literally out of this world...Expect instant chills with this one.. What makes Midnight to Monaco so unique is that their style of music is unheard of.. ''suicide'' sounds like something by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Daft Punk, and Lorde combined. I know, a very odd combination, but a brilliant one none the less. enjoy!

One of my favorite aussie synth groups, Back Back Forward Punch (known by many for their last release, ''emergency bow tie'' which was one of my favs for quite a while), are out with a brand new track.. unlike their previous tracks, ''Settle The Score'' is pure future house. yes, not disco, no nu-wave funk, but future house. Normally when a synth group attempts something like this, the results are...less than stellar.. but props to BBFP, because ''Settle The Score'' is an instant classic. I'm definitely going to spin this next time I do a house set (which will be pretty soon...)... be sure to follow them here, and be sure to HYPE this on the machine.

If you're into synth music, then you must already be familiar with both Moullinex and Satin Jackets
..These guys have been in the loop for years now, and unlike some of the other artists in the scene, they've managed to not only stay true their sound, but they've also managed to grow immensely as producers. Moullinex's '''take a chance'' was beautiful to begin with, but the Stain Jacket's remix is really something else.. Smooth 70s guitar licks and dreamy vocals make this track an absolute gem. Be sure to pump this on the Hype Machine as well, it's high time this kinda music gets the publicity it deserves. Special thanks to our good buds at DiscoTexas for keeping the sick tunes rolling.

(We Are) Nexus is an interesting act to say the least. While definitely appealing to the electronic music crowd, it is fair to say that Nexus do not necessarily fit in to the 'EDM' box. Reminiscent of 90's house with soothing vocals and melodic themes, Nexus gives the listener a sense of nostalgia all the while pushing new and unexplored musical frontiers.We sat down with them and discussed a range of different topics.

How did you two start working together? Creatively speaking how would you say you complement each other as musicians?

Carmen and I met five years ago in Santa Barbara and we eventually formed (We Are) Nexus about three years ago. We released our first single (It Feels So Good) almost two years ago now - wow, time flies!

It was natural really, it was all about timing for us more than anything. Our paths crossed at a time when we were both looking for something like this, something to completely immerse and lose ourselves in. Carmen had the vocal and lyric writing chops and Nick the songwriting and production skill. When we put those two things together it was explosive and created an amazing and energizing partnership. We also get along incredibly well and see eye to eye on almost everything. That alone has to be the best thing that compliments us.

How would you describe your sound and to what sound would you say you are striving for?

Adventurous, risky, creative, passionate… Those are a few words that fit well, we think. Primarily, we want to be known for writing great music and as prolific artists. The whole DJ / tastemaker thing is cool but that’s not really what we want to be known for. Nick had a previous career as a World Music artist prior to (We Are) Nexus and the one thing he has always been vigilant about is how a music career looks after ten years. If you look back at ten years of your work and it’s chock full of tracks that sounded like everyone else’s hit at that moment time, it’s a pretty shallow reckoning. We want to able to look back at our music and be proud that we took risks, ignored trends, wrote from our hearts, and balanced it all with common sense.

Who would you say are your inspirations in the house music genealogy or music in general? (Both as Nexus and as Individual artists)

It’s hard for us to comment on house genealogy, we don’t consider ourselves tastemakers in that area, but there are definitely those artists in dance that have inspired us. At the end of the day it’s the production that gets us. Let’s call a spade a spade, shall we! There’s no jam band, free-styling, or improvisation happening in dance; it’s all about the produced song and the well executed production of the song. We have been inspired by many of the great trance artists such as Armin, Above & Beyond, ATB, BT but that’s because we are big on top line and melody so we tend to gravitate towards the trance / dance side of things. Nick was classically trained at the Royal Academy of Music so we tend to like more in depth structure in music and composition. Our ears are always close to the ground listening to what new adventurous artists are doing such as Kygo, 3lau, Blasterjaxx etc….One of our new favs is Built By Titan. He’s relatively unknown, but that’s not going to last for long!

What is your opinion on the trajectory that Electronic music has taken over the last half decade or so

We love analyzing music markets so we definitely have an opinion on that! We love the trajectory Electronic Music has taken. It’s really quite amazing! It’s an interesting case study that we have heard discussed over and over again in the past few years.

The music business needed a powerful new genre to help redefine itself and give it a new trajectory. When you look at it from the outside, we think the success of Electronic Music ties into the rise of multimedia when dance hit the mainstream again through Lady Gaga. You can hand pick some Dance / Pop tracks that went big over the years but the glue that made it all stick this time was very different!

We really believe it was a timing thing. When Lady Gaga hit with “Let’s Dance” in 2008 (just when FB was first starting to blow up), it was the perfect recipe for a track that had its roots in Dance. It struck a cord with the mass consciousness of the “to be” millennial kids who had never really heard something like that before; they wanted to share it and they now had the technological platform to do so.

The rise of multimedia, the up and coming millennial kids, and the existing dance community (that already shared freely) all seemed to ride in tandem at just the right time. You have all these Millennial kids super savvy on their devices, sharing content, not just music, everything! Dance blew up at just the right time, to the right crowd, and for the right reason! Rock and roll went through the same thing. It all has a deeper cultural influence and meaning on society at a time when music needed a new face.

This is a question we ask everyone we interview—what is your favorite horror movie?

Ooh no…Carmen doesn’t do horror movies - she’s a baby! lol She does like suspense, though. We just finished Season 1 of the Showtime series “Penny Dreadful.” Super creepy! Not a movie but that’s what we are addicted to right now.

do you have any pre-show rituals?

We do, yes. Before each show we find a quite place to hold hands and we have a little mantra Carmen says that allows us to realize our best. It’s awesome and really helps us to focus!

What can we expect next from (We Are) Nexus?

We are really excited about our upcoming track “One More Shot.” We worked very hard to complete a track we think showcases both our vocals and production very well. You can expect killer remixes form Jose Nunez again as well as others. We don’t have a street date yet but expect it sometime mid summer. We are also getting ready to hit the road again around August on a tour which includes mainstream clubs, LGBT clubs and festivals!

Besnine & Raphael - Sulu Archipelago

A great new Nu Disco track coming from blog favorite Besnine. In a collaborative effort with Raphael, Sulu Archipelago is a dark yet uplifting piece of music with a mature and robust production style. As Besnine describes it himself, "The Sulu Archipelago is a chain of islands in the Pacific Ocean. It’s the home of the indigenous Tausug people, litteraly "the people of the [sea] current”. Back in the day, way before pearls were made industrially, those from the Sulu Archipelago were considered the "finest of the world", harvested for thousands of years by divers, mostly women, wearing only a loincloth and forced to descend to depths of over 100 feet on a single breath.

This song relates the story of the archipelago and its inhabitants. It’s a tribute to the marine wildlife and the divers."

A collaborative video is coming within the week. It will feature amazing footages of the Sulu Archipelago from divers and scientists.
Regarding Besnine’s activity, expect a busy month. With a featuring with J.A.C.K. coming up June 15 and a remix for the uprising pop talent Molly Moore for the end of the month, Summer is going to be exciting!
