The device connects to a host machine over USB 3.0 SuperSpeed interface, taking both power and connectivity from a single cable, and gives out a single HDMI display output. Under the hood is a DisplayLink-designed chipset, which went on to certify the device. While the device still works at its resolution over USB 2.0, USB 3.0 is recommended for smoother display and video playback. Measuring 42 x 64 x 14 mm (WxDxH), the device weighs about 26 g. Its highest resolution supported is 2048 x 1536. It's possible to connect as many as six of these devices to a single USB 3.0 hub without facing performance issues. Slated for mid-March, the RATOC REX-USB3HDMI is priced at 10,500 JPY (US $131).

NY Times "In Data Deluge, Multitaskers Go to Multiscreens"

The New York Times posted an interesting article on the growing trend of multiscreen computing to help increase employee productivity in the workplace.

There's also some interesting data on the sales side of monitors:

Tech firms sold 179 million monitors worldwide last year and only 130 million desktop computers — meaning “more screens per desk,” said Rhoda Alexander, who heads monitor and tablet research at IHS iSuppli. Monitors are bigger, too. The average monitor sold worldwide is 21 inches, up from 18 inches five years ago, according to iSuppli.
The Times cites the growth in multiscreen computing to the growing need to monitor multiple data streams (social media feeds, stock tickers, headlines), to studies that found people are more productive with two monitors over one, and to the drop in monitor prices -- "$200 to $300 for a 24-inch display today compared with $700 five years ago."

The idea of more screen space to accomplish more work is echoed in the article comments. Accounts, programmers, graphic designers, network administrators, and doctors all chimed in saying that keeping information visible rather than having to toggle or adjust windows to get to relevant information helped them stay focused on their work and ultimately be more productive.

It's exciting to read such positive comments on how simply adding another monitor to your workspace can make such a difference in productivity, especially because that is what DisplayLink is all about -- USB connectivity to multiple monitors.

You can read about our multi-display adapters on the DisplayLink benefits page. Connecting your primary computer to a variety of displays, including TVs, mobile screens (also tablets), and Universal Docking Stations through USB DisplayLink technology is simple and easy. The first is the Toshiba dynadock U3.0 Universal USB 3.0 Docking Station. Engadget did a short write-up on it and you can view the product overview on Toshiba's YouTube page.

Its list of features include:

One simple USB 3.0 cable connection from your laptop to all your accessories

Built-in video card supports two displays up to 2048 x 1152 resolution

HDMI™ out port built-in for Full 1080 HD video and gaming

5.1 channel surround sound through HDMI™ or 3.5mm audio ports

Six USB ports

Two easy access front USB 3.0 “always on” Sleep & Charge ports

Fast USB 3.0 data transfer speed to USB 3.0 external storage devices

Universal compatibility with all Windows®-based computers

The second new product at CES is the Toshiba USB 3.0 Mobile Monitor. Toshiba increased the screen size from 14-inches to 15.6 inches and added a USB 3.0 port that both displays and powers the monitor. The protective case also functions as a stand and storage for USB cables. In all, it makes for an easy, no-nonsense portable monitor for those looking to add an additional screen to any Windows-based computer.

PC Magazine's Natalie Shoemaker took look at it during CES 2012.

The USB 3.0 Mobile Monitor sports a 15.6-inch anti-glare widescreen that displays in a 1,366-by-768 resolution; the same as a standard laptop screen. The monitor measures one inch thick and weighs an easily portable 3.6 pounds.
You can read the rest of her overview on PC Magazine. And priceing will be revealed during its launch date later this year. However, the Toshiba dynadock U3.0 Universal USB 3.0 Docking Station is currently available through Toshiba's product page for under $180.

Unboxing of Targus USB 3.0 SuperSpeed™ Dual Video Docking Station

Preview of the Targus USB 3.0 SuperSpeed™ Dual Video Docking Station below.
Laptop Magazine's excitement for the Lenovo ThinkVision LT1421 using DisplayLink technology continued to show through as the reviewer took to YouTube in a video review.

Here's a basic list of the portable monitor's features:

14.1-inch display

1366 x 768 resolution and matte coating

Less than 0.5-inch-thick screen. Full dimensions are 13.2 x 8.6 x 0.85 inches

1.8 pounds; 2.4 pounds with cover

Windows and Mac compatible

Two big draws to Lenovo's monitor is the quickness and ease of setting up the portable device through a single USB port that also provides power using DisplayLink's technology (watch @2:35). And the second, is how well the device handles HD video -- the reviewer plays a fullscreen YouTube movie trailer at 720p (watch @4:50).

Lenovo ThinkVision LT1421 Portable Monitor with DisplayLink Technology Receives Editors' Choice Award from Laptop Magazine

DisplayLink pioneered a new category with its video USB technology -- the portable monitor. The timing for easy-to-use USB monitors is ideal for the growing number of mobile workers, who can boost productivity and standout during presentations with additional screen real estate.

If you've been looking for the perfect portable monitor, Laptop Magazine has found a winner in the new DisplayLink-enabled Lenovo ThinkVision LT1421. Combining Lenovo's devotion to quality hardware and DisplayLink's powerful USB video technology, it's not hard to see why it grabbed the magazine's Editors' Choice Award.

"This year, we've seen a couple of vendors rise to the challenge by releasing portable USB monitors that can fit right in your notebook bag. Lenovo's 14-inch ThinkVision T1421 ($199) is clearly the best of these portable displays, with wide viewing angles, great image quality, and the ability to transfer power and data over a single USB connection."

The review also mentions two other portable monitors that use DisplayLink Technology:

The Toshiba USB Mobile LCD Monitor, an ultraportable 14" display with 1366 x 768 HD resolution, ideal for presentations and multitasking. Laptop Magazine reviewed it here.

The DisplayLink enabled new U-Series Network Monitor from LG offers ease of use through USB connectivity and further expands connectivity enabling users to daisy-chain up to three monitors together when running Windows MultiPoint Server operating system on a host, with each monitor acting as an independent workstation. Depending on the capacity of the host PC, up to 15 U-Series Zero Client Network Monitors can be networked on a single host PC. And it spreads across a physical radius of 15 meters from the host with multiple daisy chains.

“LG has capitalized on DisplayLink technology to offer a complete zero-client solution without the traditional zero-client device,” said Si-hwan Park, vice president of the Monitor Division, LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company. "By connecting the LG U Series Network Monitor system to a single host PC, the host's processing power is virtualized on each monitor, creating an efficient networking solution with less hardware and lower maintenance costs."
