Established in 1996, Real Coffee & Tea Café is celebrated as the Home of the Original Calamansi Muffin. This iconic Boracay spot draws locals and tourists alike with its cozy pastries, flavorful breakfasts, and refreshing teas and coffees.

Real Coffee and Tea Café is at Station 2 just near D’Mall. Their balcony gives you better view of the beach while sipping your coffee and enjoying their calamansi muffin. The beans are hand‑grind daily and each cup is prepared using a traditional Italian moka pot, ensuring every espresso is fresh and authentic.

Café Del Sol

Café Del Sol is one of those popular restaurants in Boracay. Strategically located at the beachfront of D’Mall in Station 2, Café Del Sol opened in 2003. At Café del Sol, you’ll find a wide variety of drinks—from bold Italian espressos and creamy blended frappes to soothing teas and refreshing freshly‑squeezed fruit juices. They offer all-time favorite Filipino breakfast, pancakes, paninis and sandwiches. Aside from that must-try are their cakes and pastries. Their Brazo de Mercedez is something you should really try!

I stumbled into this café while looking for a place to work while having coffee. They are located in Station 2 just near D’Mall. Aside from Boracay, they have stores located in La Union and in Mandaluyong.

Season Coffee is a cozy Boracay café that blends island charm with specialty brews. Known for its thoughtfully crafted coffee and relaxed atmosphere, it’s the perfect spot to sip, unwind, and soak in the island vibe—whether you’re starting your day or pausing for an afternoon pick‑me‑up.

Café Uno

Café Uno is a rooftop bar café located in Station 1. It’s a perfect spot to drink and chill while watching the sunset in Boracay. Known for its warm atmosphere and friendly service, the café offers a mix of freshly brewed coffee, refreshing drinks, and comforting meals that make it a go‑to stop any time of day.

The retractable rooftop adds a more dramatic ambiance with the beautiful sunset of Boracay. The live drum performance gives an energetic and lively experience for the crowd. They also have great line-up of DJ.

Aside from their coffee they also offer different alcoholic drinks. They even offer a free shot of their mai tai. Book a reservation in advance as this place gets full immediately especially in the afternoon.

Craft Beer in Boracay

On one of our nights in Boracay, while searching for the next place to have a drink we stumbled upon an old colonial looking establishment in Station 3. To our surprise the place is actually a brewery serving their own craft beers. Our curiosity and the accommodating staff outside the establishment convinced us to enter the place. The place is called Boracay Island Brewing Company (BIBCO) located right next to Subo, Boracay, their sister company.

Upon entering you will be surprised on the design of the place. It’s décor and furniture are all vintage looking. In front is a brewery. The bar is located on the side. There are televisions showing different sports events. It’s like a modern sports bar but the repurposed items will bring you back in the past. The table where we sat is made up of old ironing boards!

The Beers

BIBCO offers a diverse lineup of craft beers ranging from hop-forward IPAs to refreshing tropical ales and rich stouts, making it one of the Philippines’ standout microbreweries. Their portfolio reflects both international styles and local flavor inspirations, appealing to casual drinkers and craft beer enthusiasts alike.

They also offer Beer Flight wherein you can choose four beer flavors served in 150ml glasses which is a great way to experience the different beers.

Many of their beers are designed to pair with Boracay’s tropical vibe—light, fruity, and refreshing for beachside enjoyment. From hazy to double, they showcase modern hop trends while keeping approachable ABVs. The Kiamoy Sour reflects Filipino flavors, offering a distinctive craft beer experience. Their beer options range from sessionable ales to bold stouts, catering to different palates. Aside from beers they also offer food menus that are perfect to pair with your drink.

What makes the place also enjoyable are the board games and card games that they have. They also have Jenga. These are all free and customers can play with them while drinking and eating.

According to legend, the Jade Emperor sent the Mother Dragon and her offspring to aid the Vietnamese people in a battle against foreign invaders, and they have remained there in the form of jungle-clad islands.

The Journey Begins

As your cruise ship pulls away from the harbor in the early afternoon, the chaos of the mainland melts into the horizon. The gentle hum of the engine, the salty breeze, and the panoramic views of limestone islets set the tone for a voyage that’s equal parts adventure and serenity.

The Old Quarter: Hanoi’s Living Time Capsule

Stepping into Hanoi’s Old Quarter is like flipping through the pages of a living history book. Narrow streets brim with motorbikes, street vendors, and colonial-era buildings that whisper stories of centuries past. Each street is named after the trade it once specialized in—silver, silk, herbs—creating a maze of tradition and commerce. The scent of pho wafts through the air, and locals sip egg coffee at tiny stools that spill onto sidewalks. There are a lot of fruit and flower vendors as well. The blue and red stools are a common sight in the streets. It’s chaotic, yes, but beautifully so.

Hoan Kiem Lake: Serenity and Legend

At the center of Hanoi lies Hoan Kiem Lake, a tranquil oasis steeped in legend. Locals gather here to practice tai chi at dawn, couples stroll hand-in-hand, and elders play chess under banyan trees. The lake’s iconic red bridge leads to Ngoc Son Temple, where the tale of the magical sword and the golden turtle live on. It’s a place where time slows, and Hanoi’s soul reveals itself. The temple was erected in the 18th century. In the middle of Hoan Kiem Lake is a small tower called Turtle Tower or Tortoise Tower. It is one of the most iconic, symbolic and most recognizable pieces of architecture representing Hanoi and the entirety of Vietnam.

Train Street: A Thrill Between the Tracks

Just when you think Hanoi couldn’t surprise you more, Train Street delivers a jolt of adrenaline. Imagine sipping coffee or beer at a tiny café, mere inches from railway tracks—then watching a train thunder past, close enough to ruffle your hair. It’s surreal, thrilling, and oddly serene once the train disappears. Locals have adapted to this rhythm, and visitors are left wide-eyed, cameras clicking in disbelief. Too bad it was raining at the time we went there. Ask your hotel or a local on the schedule of the train as the schedule is different if it is a weekday or weekend.

St. Joseph’s Cathedral: Gothic Grace in the City’s Heart

A short walk from the Old Quarter leads to the majestic St. Joseph’s Cathedral, a neo-Gothic masterpiece that feels like a slice of Europe in Southeast Asia. The twin bell tower of the Cathedral resemble that of Notre-Dame de Paris. Built in 1886, its weathered façade and stained-glass windows evoke quiet reverence. Whether you’re attending mass or simply admiring its architecture, the cathedral offers a peaceful pause amid Hanoi’s bustle. St. Joseph’s Cathedral is open from 8AM to 5PM. There are a lot of cafes and restaurants around the Cathedral as well.

Beer Street: Where Hanoi Comes Alive After Dark

As the sun dips below the horizon, Ta Hien Street—better known as Beer Street—erupts into a lively celebration of sound and spirit. Locals and tourists alike cram into this narrow lane, clinking glasses of Bia Hoi (fresh beer) and sharing laughter over sizzling plates of street food. The vibe is electric, the beer is cheap, and the people are warm. It’s Hanoi’s version of a block party, every night of the week.

Hanoi Night Market: A Festival of Lights and Life

Every weekend, the Old Quarter transforms into the Hanoi Night Market—a sprawling pedestrian zone filled with stalls, music, and street performances. From Hang Dao Street to Dong Xuan Market, vendors sell everything from handmade crafts and souvenirs to trendy clothes and local snacks. The market isn’t just about shopping—it’s a cultural experience. You’ll hear live music, see traditional dances, and feel the pulse of Hanoi’s community spirit. There is also a lot of street food in the market. It’s a place where locals and travelers mingle, haggle, and celebrate the night.

A Day in Taichung

Taichung is the second largest city in Taiwan and has a very warm climate compared to Taipei. Taichung is a major political, economic, transportation and cultural hub during the Japanese occupation. The city was able to preserve many of its historic sites and retain the original “chessboard” street plan from the Japanese era. We spent a day touring the sunny city of Taichung.

Taichung is a city with a lot of things to offer. One of the most popular places to visit is the Houli Flower farm. Houli Flower farm is a picturesque farm known for its different flowers and instagrammable spots. You will spend hours just taking photos in this place. Most famous spot to take photo is beside the windmill and the piano in the middle of flowers. Aside from the vast span of flower fields, there is an area where you can eat. The entrance fee to Houli Flower farm is NT120 and you get to be surrounded by beautiful flowers.

If you like ice cream, Miyahara is the place for you. Miyahara is a red brick architecture built by an ophthalmologist, Miyahara Takeo in 1927. After the surrender of Japan in 1945, the building became Taichung Health Bureau. However, the Heath Bureau got suspended and the building became unused and started to decay. Fortunately, a pastry company acquired the building and preserved the original red-brick wall and archway. The Miyahara building became the home for Dawn Cake’s famous pineapple cake and signature ice cream.

The Miyahara ice cream parlour is outside the building but you will never miss it because of the long line of people buying ice cream. Try the assorted flavors of ice cream and choose various toppings like pineapple cake, cheesecake and many more! Since Miyahara is a popular place, it can easily get busy and lines can get very long. There are many signatures ice cream flavor that it is hard to choose which to pick. They have wide array of tea-infused flavor ice cream, chocolate flavors, fruit flavour and the Miyahara Special. The staff will hand you the menu while waiting in line. One scoop of ice will cost you NT$90 and you get a free topping. Two scoops are NT$160 which will get you two toppings. If you order three scoops, it will cost NT$225 with three toppings. You also have an option to add a waffle coin which is NT$20.

After having ice cream at Miyahara, we went to Rainbow Village. The Rainbow Village is a former military dependents' village that was converted into street art in Nantun District. Huang Yong-Fua retired soldier began painting the walls of his home and surrounding buildings in 2010 in an attempt to have them preserved. Rainbow village consists of a few homes with different colorful mural painting. You can go around the place and take your photo in ten minutes. The Rainbow Village became a popular instagrammable place because of its colorful paintings. Aside from taking photos there are no other activity in Rainbow Village.

The last place we visited is the Gaomei Wetlands which is located on the south of the mouth of Dajia River. The soils in Gaomei wetlands is mixed with mud and sand which made is a very good breeding place of diversified organisms of both plants and animals.

Gaomei Wetlands is characterized by a row of wind turbines. There are patches of sedge grass which is one of the few plants that can survive on a water with high salt content. I was hoping to see the sunset during our visit but it was cloudy on that day. Gaomei wetlands is a windy place and can become a bit cold. There are some food stalls near the parking area. The best sun cake in Taiwan is located in Gaomei Wetlands. The store is just in the entry of the parking area.

A day is not enough to see the beauty that Taichung can offer.

Shifen Waterfall is a picturesque waterfall located in Pingxi District on the upper reached of the Keelung River. It is the broadest waterfall in Taiwan with a total height of 20 meters (66 ft) and width of 40 meters (130 ft). It is a cascade waterfall in which the water flows in one direction and the rock sloped in the opposite. We went to the waterfall on an afternoon. There were a lot of tourists like us wanting to see the waterfall.

To reach the waterfall you will have to pass on a suspended bridge. Adjacent to the bridge is a functioning train railroad. After passing the bridge, you will pass by at a small temple. After that you will reach the food stalls and waterfall. After the food stall, you will see the majestic waterfall. There are several viewpoints of the waterfall, and it is mostly crowded of tourist. However, each viewpoint will give you a stunning look at the waterfall.

Shifen Waterfall is open daily from 9AM to 4:30PM and its free. I would suggest going early to avoid the crowd.

A few walk away from Shifen waterfall is the Shifen oldstreet which is popular for its sky lanterns. Tourists flocks the Pingxi Railway Line to write their wishes on the lantern and release them on the sky in the middle of the train tracks.

The custom of releasing sky lanterns can be traced back to the Fujian province of China. In the middle of 1800s, the Pingxi area is full of bandits. The local villagers would send up sky lanterns to inform others that it was safe to pick up supplies. The locals started to writing wishes to the gods on the lanterns since it goes high into the sky.

The price for a sky lantern and Shifen is TWD 200 (single color, red is the most common), 250 (four colors), or 350 (8 colors). Each color of the lantern has a meaning. Once you light up the lantern and release it, it will immediately go up. One of the vendors will assist you in arranging the lantern so that you can write your wishes. They will also assist you in releasing your lantern and they will take photos of you releasing the lantern.

You can also buy some souvenir items on the stores selling lanterns. There are a lot of lantern keychains. Aside from shops selling lanterns, there are also some food stalls along the train tracks.

A Guide at Yehliu Geopark

Yehliu Geopark is one the popular tourist attraction in Taiwan. Yehliu Geopark is located on the north coast of Taiwan. Yehliu Geopark is divided into three section. The first section has rocks like the famous Queen’s head, Fairy’s Shoe and Candle. The second section has rocks like Bean Curd and Dragon Head. The third section has sea-eroded caves and seal shaped rock. The rock formations in the Yehliu Geopark are caused by weathering, marine erosion, and crustal movement.

Travel time from Taipei to Yehliu Geopark may take 1.5 hours. There are buses from Taipei that can bring you directly to the Geopark. There is also an option to take the THSR or TRA. However, you will still have to take a bus after going down the train station. The entrance fee at Yehliu Geopark is NTD 120. There is usually a long line in the ticket booth.

Since Yehliu is popular tourist spot it can easily get crowded, so it is better to plan your travel to maximize your trip. The Queen’s head always have a long queue of tourist wanting to get a picture with it. You can try to find other angle wherein you can get a picture with the Queen’s head without people in the background.

Aside from the different interesting rock formation, the Yehliu Geopark offers a scenic view of the sea. There is also a market just outside the park where you can buy souvenirs and food.

Shilin Night Market

Shilin Night Market is one of the largest night markets in Taipei. It is incredibly famous for its various snacks and eatery. If you are taking the Taipei MRT, you just need to go down the Jiantan station and from there its just a short walk. Even as you step out of the subway there are already food stalls leading to Shilin Night Market. Aside from food, Shilin Night Market is also a best place to buy souvenirs. Items are cheaper than in other places. They have ref magnets, cable holders, shirts, key chains, and others. There are also games or activities wherein you can win some prizes.

There are a lot of good food stalls in Shillin Night Market. For us to maximize our visit, we already did research of the best food stalls. There are also some food stalls that has been given the Michellin Bib Gourmand. A Bib Gourmand is more likely to offer comforting favourites at their best.

There are stalls that offer tanghulu. Tanghulu is a candied fruit snack. Originally it is made frum hawthorn berries, but it can made with other fruits as well like strawberry, grapes or plum.

One of the must-try is Raohe Street Fuzhou Black Pepper Buns. The famous black pepper buns in Raohe Night Market is alson in Shilin Night Market. Just like in Raohe, the buns are roasted to perfection inside a clay oven.

Another must-try is Guan Zheng-zong’s Original Small Sausage Wrapped in Big Sausage. It is Taiwanese sausage inside sticky rice sausage. They offer different flavors for the sauce of the sausage like garlic, spicy, satay, honey, soy sauce, and more.

Hometown BBQ Chicken is one of the best Taiwanese fried chicken selections at Shilin Night Market. They have a stall located near the Jiantan station. The chicken is big and crispy.

If you want to try these stalls, I suggest you come in early as there is always line in these food stalls. Shilin Night Market opens at 6PM although not all stalls are open at this time. Some are just starting their set-up but coming in early will give you more chance to go around the night market.

Going Around Ximending

Ximending is a neighborhood and shopping district in Taipei. Ximending is a popular theater street in Taipei in the past. Today, Ximending has twenty theaters and is a popular area for small concerts and street performance. Every night there are different street performances.

One of the famous place in Ximending is the Red House Theater. It was built in 1908 by Kondo Juro, a Japanese architect. The Red House started as a public market then shifted to bookstore, cinema and to a theater. The Red House is now a platform to promote Cultural and Creative Industry making Ximending as most iconic location of Cultural and Creative Industry in Taiwan.

Aside from being an entertainment and shopping hub, Ximending is also a place for food. And I mean really nice food! But I’ll be sharing my food trip in another blog. So aside from the entertainment and food, what else can you do in Ximending?

At the main intersection, just near the Red House is the Rainbow Six Crossing, one of the most popular spot in Ximending. It is close to the LGBTQ+ bars and the whole are around it has huge billboards and neon displays.

Just a short walk from Ximending is Taipei North Gate which is a historical landmark dating back in the 1880s and is located in Beimen North Gate Square.

From Taipei North Gate you can walk to Beimen MRT Underground station where you can ride a train to Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall. The hall was built in a previous army headquarters. The square in front of the memorial hall is a popular gathering place. The National Concert Hall is located on the left side of the memorial hall and on the right side is the National Theater. The square between the two halls is used often for performances and musical activities.

The famous Taipei 101 is just six stations away from Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall. Taipei 101 from outside looks like a bamboo stalk towering the other building. In the basement of the building is a decent food court. The famous Din Tai Fung is located at the ground floor. Tickets for the observation on the 88^th and 89^th floors is at the 5^th floor. You can have a 360 view of the Taipei at the 88^th floor. If the weather is good, you can also try the outdoor deck at the 91^st floor.

Dining at Kayuputi

Kayuputi restaurant is located at The St. Regis in Bali. It is the signature restaurant of The St. Regis Bali Resort. The St. Regis Bali resort is in the serene beach of Nusa Dua.

Kayuputi offers Asian-inspired cuisine. The restaurant has a magnificent view of the beach and is comprise of elegant and stylish interiors. In the center of the restaurant is a large open kitchen where you can watch the culinary brigade with their chef prepare your dishes.

Kayuputi offers a variety of dishes through a la carte and degustation menus, as well as Sunday brunches and champagne brunches. Each of their dish has a mix of Asian flavors and western influences.

Advanced reservation is needed. We try to make dinner reservation two weeks before our arrival in Bali and their reservation is almost full. We had to change some plans just to be able to fit in our schedule their available slots.

When we arrive at The St. Regis Bali Resort, we were greeted by their staff. They assist us in getting a caddy to bring us in the restaurant. Yes, there is a caddy car to bring you in the restaurant since it is a bit far from the main lobby. While waiting for the ride we were able to watch performance of fire dancers.

At Kayuputi, we were immediately assisted to our seat. We chose a seat outside to feel the sea breeze. The seats outside are also more intimate.

A few minutes after we are seated, they took our orders and they immediately brought out complimentary dishes. First food they brought us is their five flavored bread rolls with four dipping sauces. I forgot the flavors of the bread but the dipping sauce are olive oil, butter, tartar sauce and catsup with banana.

Another complimentary dish is the fresh salmon with cucumber. This dish is very refreshing.

For appetizer we tried their Char-grilled Octopus Tentacle. It has Spring onion – ginger flower sambal, Balinese seasonal beans velvet, ruku – ruku leaf oil, purple potato chips. The octopus is melt in your mouth. The thin purple potato chips is a delight.

For our mains, we ordered their Swordfish Loin and Sumberkima or Coral Trout. The Swordfish Loin has soy-glazed oxtail ragout. The small meats in the ragout is very tasty and adds a different texture from the swordfish loin. The dish also has edamame beans and Asian green herbs salad.

The Sumberkima or Coral Trout is steamed and is placed in black ink emulsion. This is my favorite dish from what we ordered. It has zucchini, konbu, allium crumbles, green shallot oil and potato net. All of the ingredients in the dish compliments one another. The fish is soft and then you have the crispy potato net.

Lastly for dessert, we had their Valrhona Chocolate ice cream. There is nothing too fancy for the ice cream. It easily melts so it’s best to immediately consume it.

For drinks we tried their American Mint Lemonade mocktail. It has lemon juice, sugar syrup, mint leaves and lemonade which is very refreshing on a humid weather.

Overall, we enjoyed our dining experience in Bali and if ever we go back to Bali, we will definitely make another reservation at Kayuputi.

Kuta Beach and Art Market

Kuta beach maybe is the most famous place to visit in Bali and it is very accessible from the airport. The place has a lot of tourist, restaurants, and hotels. Kuta is an hour away from our hotel but we decided to visit it for their art market and to check the beach.

They say Kuta Art Market is a street filled with stalls selling unique Bali art, souvenirs, and handicrafts. However, this is not what we saw in the famous street. We learned that all shops are now in a building complex. Only few stalls are being occupied in the building and moreover, there are only few stalls open when we went there. We feel that it must be because of the pandemic that there are only few stalls left. Still the art market is located on the street going to the beach.

Since we arrived early in Kuta, we decided to have breakfast first at Kopi and Kue. Food is decent but what capture my attention is the wall of vandal going to the restroom. After breakfast, we visit some of the shop going to the beach to compare prices.

Kuta beach is very disappointing. It is full of tourists which is actually normal, a lot of local offering you to rent chairs and shades, and pricey restaurant with mediocre food. The sand is gray and full of trash. Not sure if the water is even clean to swim in the first place but there are still a lot of surfers.

After roaming in the beach, we went back to the market street and bought some souvenirs. The art market is filled with magnets, figurines, key chains and other knick knacks. They also sell souvenir shirts, sarong and beach shorts. There also a lot of the local coffee and other delicacies.

Next stop in our Kuta trip is the Pie Susu store. Pie Susu is a thin pastry with layer of custard filling made with condensed milk. Near the Pie Susu store, is the Anomali cafe. We went to try their coffee and their pastry. They have different kinds of coffee from different part of Indonesia.

Although, we did not like the beach in Kuta, you may still consider visiting it if you love to surf and party at night.

Exploring the East of Bali

East Bali is somehow overlooked by other more popular tourist destination like Ubud, Seminyak and Canggu. East Bali is a bit far from Denpasar. It is a two-hour ride from Denpasar. However, if you prefer to immense yourself to nature and more of the Bali tradition, then East Bali is a perfect place.

There are a lot of places you can visit in East Bali. Most of the tourist places in East Bali are very popular in social media because of its scenic views. We only went to three places in East Bali because it is very far from Nusa Dua from where we stay. From Nusa Dua our travel time is approximately three hours. We also took into consideration the long lines of tourist that we may encounter.

The first place we visited in East Bali is the most Instagrammed Lempuyang Temple where the Gate of Heaven is located. En route to Lempuyang temple you will see the majestic Mount Agung. You will also pass by towns and some rice field.

Lempuyang Temple opens at 7AM everyday and closes at 5PM. Cars are not allowed to go at the Gates of Heaven. At the parking lot there is a booth where you pay 50,000 IDR for a shuttle that will bring you to the Gates of Heaven. The road going up the Gates of Heaven is very steep. When you arrive at the lower ground of the temple, you will have to pay 100,000 IDR for the entrance, getting the iconic photo and for the sarong rental. They will not allow you to enter without the sarong. Men and women need to wear the sarong. There is no need to booked in advance the ticket however it is important that you arrive early because there is usually a long queue of tourist waiting for their turn to get the photo. In our case, since it is off-peaked we just waited for around one hour and thirty minutes. During peak season waiting time can reach up to three hours or more. While waiting for your turn on the photo, you may take pictures on the other area of the temple ground.

The temple ground is all concrete. The reflection shot is a cellphone camera trick. When its your turn for the photo, you will give your mobile phone to one of the staff in the temple. They have a small mirror where they just place your camera lens on top to create the reflection or water trick. You can only do five poses during your turn however; the photographer takes continuous shot so you will get more than five shots. It also better that you have already thought of the pose you will make.

Aside from the Gates of Heaven, you will also have a more beautiful view of Mount Agung. Honestly, I was captivated by Mount Agung more than the Gates of Heaven. Opposite the Gates of Heaven is a set of stairs with dragons and greenery which is also a nice area to take pictures. There are also lesser people taking picture in this area.

After Lempuyang Temple, we went to Tirta Gangga Water Palace. This is just another place where you can get good photos for your social media. The entrance fee for Tirta Gangga is 30,000 IDR. The place is full of ponds with large Koi Fish. You can buy fish food to feed the fish. The most popular attraction in Tirta Gangga are the stepping stones on the pond where you can take pictures. Aside from that the place has a lot of beautiful flowers and ornate carvings. The place can get crowded especially the area where the stepping stones are located. It is better to visit the place earlier to avoid too much crowds. Tirta Gangga opens at 8AM and closes at 5PM. There are also restaurants inside the water palace.

The last place we went to in East Bali is Taman Ujung Palace. It is quite far from Tirta Gangga as it also took us around forty-five minutes to reach the place. Taman Ujung Palace is located near the sea and has three large pools. It is offers a great view of Mount Agung especially in the morning. Entrance fee is 75,000 IDR. You will cross a bridge filled with bougainvilleas to enter the complex. Inside the complex is a building named Gili Bale which is connected to the edge of the pool by a bridge with beautiful arches and detailed stone carvings. Taman Ujung is bigger that Tirta Gangga and Lempuyang Temple. It may take you an hour to completely tour the whole place. If you are in to it, you may climb the stairs and get a better view of the whole palace and the sea. When we went to the complex, there were only three small groups of tourist.

Other place in East Bali to visit is the Virgin Beach and Bukit Cinta where you can have a better view of Mount Agung.

A Day in Ubud, Bali

Ubud is a town in Bali located in the uplands which is known for its arts and traditional dance. Ubud is a famous destination for waterfalls, rice paddies and rich culture. It’s one of the must-see places when you travel to Bali. Ubud has its own charm that a traveler would fall in love with.

There are a lot of tourist attraction in Ubud that it will be difficult to complete all of it in just one day. We just selected the places that we would like to visit. However, if you plan to really explore all of Ubud, it’s better to book a place to stay in the area. There are a lot of hotels and Air BnB located in Ubud. Some of them are even located in Tegalalang rice terraces.

Our one-day itinerary in Ubud includes Tegalalang rice terraces, Campuhan Ridge Walk, Ubud Royal Palace and Coffee plantation.

Our first destination was the Tegalalang rice terraces. The Tegalalang rice terraces is located at the north area of Ubud. The best time to visit Tegalalang rice terraces is early morning when the sun gives a golden glow on the lush green rice field. Entrance fee on the eastern side of the valley along Jalan Raya Cebok is 10,000 IDR. If you are coming from Ume Ceking the fee is 50,000 IDR. Ume Ceking is the common point of entry for the rice terraces. This is also the area where you can experience the swing with the rice terraces as the backdrop. However, when we went there it seemed that most establishments that offer the swing is closed. From above, you can take a picture of the rice terraces, but you can also go down and explore the rice terraces. Exploring the rice paddies need stamina. There are steps that are steep and sometimes slippery.

Our second destination is the Campuhan Ridge walk. Campuhan Ridge walk is also best to visit early in the morning when it is not too hot. It is a scenic trail and very easy to trek. The trek will take you 20 to 40 minutes depending on your pace. In our case we were able to reach the end of the trek in 20 minutes. At the end of the ridge is a village with cafes. There are also some art and souvenirs that you can buy. We decided to have our brunch at Karsa Kafe. It’s another 10-minute walk from the end of the ridge but the food and view at Karsa Kafe is worth the extra walk. A must-try is their local Balinese pancake and Bali coffee. Karsa Kafe is surrounded by lotus pond and a rice field.

After having our brunch at Karsa Kafe we went to Ubud Royal Palace. The Ubud Royal Palace is just near Campuhan Ridge Walk. It is just a five-minute travel by car, however there is usually traffic near Ubud Royal Palace. There is no entrance fee for Ubud Royal Palace. You may wander around the compound and take pictures. Ubud Royal Palace is also just near the Ubud Art Market.

Our last destination in Ubud is the coffee plantation. From Ubud Royal Palace, it took us around 30 minutes to reach the coffee plantation. Once you arrive at the coffee plantation, a staff will immediately usher you inside and will give an informational tour about the coffee, cacao, tea, and other fruit-bearing plants that they have in their compound. The staff will explain the difference between Arabica and Robusta. The staff will also show you the civet cat and the process of the luwak coffee. Luwak coffee is considered the most expensive coffee in the world. Luwak is a coffee that consists of partially digested coffee cherries, which have been eaten and defecated by the civet cat. After the tour, the staff will take you in an area where you can have a free taste of their coffee and tea selection. However, if you want to try the Luwak coffee, you must pay 50,000 IDR. The coffee plantation has a shop inside their compound where you can buy coffee including luwak coffee. They also have other teas and other souvenirs.

There are other places in Ubud that you may visit aside from what we included in our itinerary. Some other must-visit attractions in Ubud are the Ubud Monkey Forest, Saraswati Temple, Ubud Art Market and Tibumana Waterfalls to name a few.

General Bali Guide

This is a late post of my trip to Bali last November 2023. This post is to give general information on what you need to know about Bali for your travel and what you can expect.

November is not a popular time to visit Bali because it is their rainy season. However, luckily it was sunny during our trip and just experienced one drizzle during our whole stay on the island. Since it is off-season there are fewer tourists and shorter lines in some tourists’ destinations. There are only two seasons in Indonesia, pretty much like in the Philippines. Its two seasons are defined as dry (April to October) and wet (November to March). However, even if it’s raining, it can be humid in Bali. So, it’s better to bring and wear light attire.

The first thing we did when we arrived in Bali was withdraw cash. There are some ATM machines before you exit the airport. Based on our research BNI has the lowest exchange rate, so this is where we usually withdraw our money.

There are a lot of taxis offering rides. In our case we booked a vehicle through Gojek. Gojek is the local ride hailing services in Bali. It is the same as Uber or Grab. There is also a Gojek booth outside the airport that can assist you. We downloaded the Gojek application before our flight. Gojek accepts cash payment, or you may link your credit card to the app.

The place where you want to stay in Bali will depend on what is your itinerary. Some tourist destinations are from each other hence it is better to book a place where you want to stay based on your itinerary.

Getting around Bali is easy. The most popular way is renting a motorbike. Motorbike rentals are common in Bali. It is also cheaper and gives you more flexibility. Another option is booking a ride through Gojek. You can also contact tour services in Bali to help you get around the places you want to visit. In our case, we told our tour service our itinerary and they advised us if it is feasible and gave us the total cost. We checked three different tour services to compare costs and inclusion. Some tour services do not include gas charges. It is better to read and compare the inclusions of their services so that you can get better value for your money.

Most tourist attractions have entrance fees but there are some which are free. Most of the temples we visited have an entrance fee. There are also some temples that have a dress code which you need to follow. Temples are still very common in Bali.

Aside from temple, one of the famous tourist attractions in Bali is their beaches. There are a lot of beaches in Bali and each beach offers a different experience. Popular beach destinations in Bali are Kuta, Uluwatu, Sanur ang Canggu. Another popular beach destination is Nusa Penida, however this is a small island near the big island of Bali.

Of course, a travel in Bali would not be complete without experiencing their food. Popular local food is Babi Guling or roasted suckling pig. There are Warungs that offer Babi Guling. Warung is a small eatery or cafeteria. Satay is also a popular local dish in Bali. Other must-try food in Bali are Nasi Goreng, Tahu and Tempeh and traditional cakes and dessert.

Travel to Bali is not complete without having their traditional coffee. You can visit coffee plantations and have free samples of their teas and coffee including the expensive luwak coffee. They also explain how they create their tea and coffee. You may also try their local beers. The most recognized local beer is Bintang.

Aside from this it is better to also understand the culture of Bali. majority of the population is Muslim, while in Bali the Hindu religion is predominant. In general, Balinese are very religious. You can see them prepare and have canang sari in their houses or any establishment. Canang sari are usually based in a woven bamboo container and include rice, flowers, incense, sweets, fruits, and spices.

Visiting Bali is a remarkable experience. It is both an adventure and a tranquil place in one. Will be posting about more of our detailed tour in Bali.

Gastronomy in Vigan

The pandemic has really taken a toll on our desire to travel and experience a lot of new things. To start my revenge travel this year, I went to Vigan, Ilocos Sur. The trip to Vigan is simple. We do not have any itinerary because it just a weekend trip. I know some of you would wonder why just a weekend trip to Vigan. Well, we have other ulterior motives in going to Vigan. However, we know we would like to eat in Vigan. And I mean really eat! And I do not mean eating in every restaurant in Vigan. We try to choose the best places to eat in Vigan and limit it to the must try.

So, our first food adventure brought us to the well-known Grandpa's Inn where Kusina Felicitas is located. We decided to have our lunch here. Kusina Felicitas is popular for their Pipian na Manok and Sinanglao. However, Ilocano dish like Bagnet and Pinakbet is also a must-try. For our lunch, we ordered their Bagnet and Pinakbet. Of course, the Bagnet tastes great. Their pinakbet is not very salty based on my taste. You can appreciate the own taste of each vegetables because the bagoong does not overpower it. Instead, the bagoong in the pinakbet helps enhance the taste of each vegetables.

Aside from the Bagnet and Pinakbet, we also had their chocolate cake. Its a classic chocolate cake.

In the afternoon, we searched for Irene's Empanada. Based on our research, this where you can buy the authentic and best empanada in Vigan. Irene's Empanada is located in Calle Crisologo. There is a sign so you will definitely not miss it. They have different varieties of empanada and they also have okoy.

For dinner, we decided to go to Calle Brewery. We do not want to miss to try their craft beers. Aside from the craft beer they offer smoked meats. Its different from the other foods offered by the other restaurants. We ordered their BBQ plate. The BBQ plate consists of rice, two sides and your choice of meat. We ordered sausages and beef brisket for the meat. The meat is very tender and juicy. And, of course we tried their craft beer. They have six craft beers that you can choose from.

On the next day, we had our breakfast in our hotel. Since we are in Vigan, we ordered their local longganisa for breakfast. I like the garlicky taste of Vigan longganisa. Its very flavorful.

To end our food trip, we tried their local coffee, Ilocos coffee, at Coffee Break Vigan. Coffee Break Vigan is a quaint cafe in Calle Crisologo. Aside from coffee, they also have sandwiches, breakfast meals and pasta.

There are a lot of other restaurants and cafe in Vigan. Hopefully we can try them on our next visit.

Travelling Solo in Abra

I have already planned to have a solo travel at the start of the year. The only question that I had for some months is where would I go. There were two places in my mind when I started to plan my solo travel. It's either I go to a beach or on a place near the mountains. The two provinces on my mind is either I go to Sorsogon or in Abra. Although Abra is not really located in the mountains. So I did some research on the two province.

I was already decided to go to Sorsogon but i changed my mind after seeing a picture of Kaparkan Falls in Instagram. It looks beautiful and amazing. So I decided to have my solo trip in Abra albeit the warning of a friend because the place is known for high crime rate especially during election period.

I had a hard time arranging my trip to Abra because there are only few inns and hotels appearing in the internet. Some of them are very far from the town proper. I was able to arrange a tour to Kaparkan Falls and another tour around Abra. Luckily, an officemate just went to Abra and I was able to get some recommendations for the hotel.

Unfortunately, there was a typhoon coming on my planned trip to Abra. The brave soul that I have did not falter amid the coming storm. On that Wednesday night, even though its zero-visibility, my friend gave me a ride to Partas bus station. I was just in time for their 10:00PM ride going to Bangued.

I arrive in Bangued a little past 5:00AM. It was still a bit dark so I decided to stay a little while in Partas terminal. I searched for a place to eat while thinking where would I go. While having breakfast, I received a text message from my tour organizer that they are cancelling the Kaparkan tour because of the weather conditions. I asked her if there is an alternative option since I'm already in Abra. My tour coordinator advised me that I can do the Abra tour on that day since she is also not sure if I can go to Apao rolling hills if it rains the next day. She told me that we can meet at their office in the DPWH compound.

The DPWH compound is also the place where tourists go to ride the truck going to Kaparkan Falls. My tour coordinator, Dykath, contacted a habal-habal to tour me around Abra. She also offered their homestay which is much cheaper that the hotel that I was supposed to go to. Luckily I have not paid anything yet in the hotel.

My tour around Abra includes Apao Rolling Hills, Narnaan Falls, Don Mariano Marcos bridge, St. Catherine of Alexandria Church, Gabriela Silang Gallery, Calaba Bridge and San Lorenzo Shrine.

The Apao Rolling Hills is a bit far and might take two hours of travel. It is advisable to hire a habal-habal to take you to the Hills as there are roads that are narrow and uphill rough roads that is not suitable for four-wheel vehicles. The sound of the winds will greet you upon reaching the hills. According to my habal-habal driver, it was called the rolling hills because the wind creates an illusion that the hills are rolling as it blows through the grass. Too bad that although it was windy that day it is not enough to sway the grass of the other hills.

Next stop is the Narnaan Falls. Narnaan Falls is actually along the road going to Apao Rolling Hills. Locals just recently discovered that there is a fall near the road. The locals removed some of the trees and boulders to pave way to the falls. Unlike Kaparkan Falls, Narnaan Falls is just small and there is no catch basin. But you may wade your tired feet on the stream where its water falls.

There is another falls that we went to. It is called the Enchanted Falls. Just like Narnaan, the falls was was recently discovered by the locals. Going to the Enchanted Falls requires a short trek. Enchanted Falls is ideal for swimming. The trees surrounding the falls give a nice shade. Unfortunately there are already some vandals in the falls.

The Don Mariano bridge is the longest bridge in Abra. We've already passed the bridge going to Apao Rolling Hills but we decided to take some pictures going back.

After the Don Mariano bridge, we went to the old house of Gabriela Silang. It houses a lot of souvenir items and memorabilia of the former Ambassador Rosario Cariño. There are also artworks from famous painters like Fernando Armosolo, Juan Luna and Pable Picasso.

A few walk from Gabriela Silang Gallery is St. Catherine of Alexandria Church also known as Tayum. The church was declared as a Natural Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines.

Another church worth visiting is the San Lorenzo Ruiz Shrine. At the back of the church is a cemetery.

There are other places worth visiting in Abra. Well, I'll definitely go back and hopefully I will be able to visit the Kaparkan Falls.

A Walk in Batad

Nine years ago I went to Sagada. On the way to Sagada, you will pass by Banaue. The famous province or rice terraces. My recent travel to Banaue is quite different compared to my other travels. I went to Banaue with my friend who is experiencing some troubles in his life. My friend said that he feels that Batad, which is a town in Banaue, is his happy place and he would like to go there. However, he does not want to go alone because he feels that time that he cannot process whatever he is feeling. He was able to convince me to tag along with him.

We left Manila on a Thursday night. We booked a ticket at Ohayami Trans a week before the scheduled date. Ohayami Trans is located in Sampaloc, Manila. We arrived in Banaue at around 8:00AM. Upon, getting down the bus, there are a lot of locals offering ride going to Sagada or Batad. You should be a bit cautious about this because some of them charged extremely high. We opted to ride a tricycle that will bring us at the end of the road where the trek going down the village of Batad begins.

We stayed at Ramon's Homestay in Batad. The Ramon Homestay in Batad offers a traditional Ifugao hut where tourists or guests can stay. Our overnight stay in the house costs P 1,800.00. I think they charge higher during peak season but since its lean season it was offered to us in a discounted rate. The hut where we stayed has three beds. There is no electricity in the hut. There is no light or electric fan. One of the staff gave us a flashlight which served as our light during the night. There is a separate toilet and bathroom that guests can use. Aside from the traditional hut, Ramon's Homestay also has rooms with toilet which is at P900.00 per night. Ramon Homestay gives you a perfect view of the rice terraces.

The first thing we did when we reached Ramon's Homestay is to eat breakfast. While waiting for our breakfast to be served, we talked to a tour guide for our itinerary. The guide told us that we can go to the viewpoint at 11:00AM and then to Tappiya waterfalls. There are different view decks in Batad where you can see the whole rice terraces. There are two view point which are located at the highest part of the rice terraces. We chose the viewpoint which is much nearer Ramon Homestay and which has the same path going to Tappiya waterfalls.

Going to the viewpoint and Tappiya waterfalls is a test of stamina and endurance. The trek is not easy. you have to go up and down the rice terraces.

However, even though how tiring the trek can be you will be rewarded by jaw-dropping view.

Our trip to Batad was really short but it was definitely worth it.

Photowalk in Baler

It's been a year, one year and one week to be exact since my first visit in Baler. And I'm back to this town! Admittedly, I can't help it. When I left Baler last year, all I was thinking is when will I go back. The sun, the sea and sound of waves are calling me back to this town. I can't decribe how I feel when I'm in this town. What is weird is that I don't surf so there's really no reason for me to visit this place. I'm also not a good swimmer so the beach isn't also a big factor. But there is something in Baler that me make always go back.

My trip this year was different from last year because now its all about work. I was tasked to organize an out-of-town photowalk for our photography club in the office. So the logical thing for me to do is think of a place that I have been to where there can be a lot of elements for photography. Baler is the first place that comes out of my mind.

Baler is a perfect place for photowalk. There's a lot of things to see and do in Baler. Just staying in Sabang beach for a few minutes will keep you busy in capturing moments of everything around you.

Since I've been to Baler, I also know what is the best time to do the photowalk. Well, most of the surfers get into the sea early in the morning or late in the afternoon which is also the best time for photography because it is the golden hour.

We left Manila at around 3AM and reached Baler at 11:30AM. It was a long drive but worth it because we were able to see some of the beautiful sights on the way to Baler.

We were already hungry when we reached Baler so we decided to have lunch first before we settle in our room. We had our lunch at Surfer's Grill which my officemates became interested to when they learn that part of the grilling will be done in the old Volkswagen car. Aside from the ambiance of the place, the food is Instagram worthy.

After having our lunch, we first took a short nap. We woke up at 4PM just in time to take some photos in the beach. We walked along the boardwalk and took some photo. At around 5PM we rented a tricycle to bring us to Diguisit beach to do some photography in the rock formations.

Taking photos of the rock formations is a bit challenging because first there is no flat area where you can put your tripod, second there's wind and waves that makes your tripod shaky. It was already dark when we left Diguisit rock formation and headed back to out Inn.

We rested for a few minutes in our room before checking out the best place to go for our dinner. Near El Teodoro's Inn, the place where we are staying, is a restaurant where beautiful lights are hanging in their tree. Honestly, we agreed to have our dinner at the restaurants because we were very much attracted to the lights in the trees. The name of the restaurant is Khubli.

I can compare Khubli to the restaurants we usually have in Manila. The difference that Khubli have with the restaurants in Manila is that though it looks posh, you will still feel the ambiance of Baler. Also, the food pricing is decent enough unlike other resorts or restaurants that is pricey just because they have a view of the sea. A must try in Khubli is their paella and pizza. They also have a wide variety of beer and other booze which is not also that expensive.

The next day, we woke up just in time for the sunrise. Yep, it's an early photowalk for us. We walked at the stretch of the Sabang boardwalk for like two hours getting busy with our camera and just engulfing a beautiful morning in Baler.

Our tummy started to ramble an during our photowalk we saw the buffet breakfast offered by Bayler View. Their buffet breakfast costs only Php 200.00 per head and you can avail it even if you are not a guest in their hotel.

My companions decided to take some swim in the beach before packing up to go back to Manila. I can say that our trip to Baler is an incredible photowalk experience.

Photowalks in the Philippines

2017 was a very challenging year for me. It even hinders me to do more photowalks. My photowalks even at the latter part of the year. Nonetheless, I was still able to take some snap during my travel though they are not photowalks.

My first travel last year was in Baler. Clearly, my travel for Baler was not for photowalk but I was able to take some nice photo on my weekend stay. Photos of Baler will not be complete if it does not have anything about surfing.

However, there is more to taking photos of surfers in Baler. The baywalk in Sabang beach is perfect spot to take photos.

Baler is also a perfect place for food photography. There are a lot of restaurants and hidden nook in Baler wherein the food and place should become part of your Instagram feeds.

My first official photowalk was in BGC. Since BGC is very colorful at night, the photowalk was done at night.

Aside from the beautiful lights in BGC, the business district is still full of people even at the wee hours of the night. There also seems to be a lot of things happening in the place.

My second photowalk was in the art capital of the Philippines, Angono. Angono is the home of Carlos "Botong" Francisco and Lucio San Pedro. Angono also is a home of many museums. I visited two museums, a lake and a church on my photowalk.

The last photowalk I did was in Intramuros which happened on the early part of December. The photowalk is on street and night photography. I think there is no introduction needed for Intramuros as it is one of the most common place for photowalks. Intramuros is a perfect place for photowalk especially if you are just learning photography and you are inclined to do street photography.

Hoping that I will have more chance to do photowalks this 2018.

A Grand Circuit Tour

Seeing Angkor Wat was really an incredible experience. The small circuit was overwhelming. We were only in Cambodia for two days but it already felt as if we were there for already a month because of the many temples we were able to visit. Some temples might just look like the same but there are those temples that is really different from others.

On our third day in Cambodia our itinerary includes sunrise viewing in Angkor Wat, elephant ride in Bayon and a tour of the Grand Circuit temple.

We have to wake up at 4AM for us to make it on time to see the sunrise in Angkor Wat. We have informed our hotel the day before so they were able to prepare packed breakfast that we will bring and they have coordinated our itinerary with our tuktuk driver.

The time of sunrise depends on the season or time of the year. It is always best to ask the locals about it. Unfortunately for us even though it is dry season in Cambodia there were rains because of climate change. It rained the previous night making it a gloomy morning. The raising sun is covered by gray clouds making a pink to purple color of the sky. You will be surprised that there are a lot of tourists willing to wake up early morning just to see this view.

After seeing the sunrise in Angkor Wat we went to Bayon temple to wait for our elephant ride. We also took this time to have our breakfast and take some rest. The elephant ride opens at 8AM. It costs $20.00 per person for one ride. The elephant took us around the Bayon temple and many tourists took pictures of the elephant while we are riding it.

We headed to do the Grand Circuit tour after our elephant ride. Our first stop was at Preah Khan however i wasn't able to enter the temple because I lost my Angkor Pass. Our tuktuk driver have left us and went to the North Gate of the temple. I told my friends that they can go without me and I'll just wait for them. I went in the East Gate where I waited for my friends. I was able to talk to the guard on the gate and he was able to tell me some historical information about the temple. I can say we had a very good conversation and it was nice to talk to somebody while waiting.

After Preah Khan, we went to buy a one day Angkor Pass so that I can enter the temples. It took us thirty minutes to buy the ticket and get back to the temple ground.

Our next temple was Pre Rup. At Pre Rup we were not only amazed by the temple but also of a phenomenon. Since there were some drizzles in the morning, it formed a sun halo. I was curious of what the tourist are looking at the sky so I look up and see the sun halo. The sun halo lasted for some twenty to thirty minutes.

Pre Rup means "turn the body". There is a common belief among Cambodians that funerals were conducted at the temple, with the ashes of the body being ritually rotated in different directions as the funeral service progressed.

East Mebon is a 19th century temple in Angkor. It is very distinctive for its two-meter-high free-standing stone guardian elephant. The temple was dedicated for the Hindu God Shiva and it honors the parent of the king.

After East Mebon we went to Ta Som. Ta Som is just a small temple so it is just easy to navigate around it. The temple is in ruins and trees and other vegetation are growing in its ruins. In 1998 the World Monument Fund added Ta Som as part of their restoration program.

Ta Som is surrounded by moat and enclosed by three laterite walls which are broken by two sets of gopura or entrance ways. The last gopura has a huge fig tree growing in it. It is located at the far end of the temple. There was a sketch artist when we went to Ta Som and he was doing a sketch of the gopura with the fig tree.

Our last temple for the Grand Circuit is Neak Pean. This is a very distinctive temple because it is surrounded by water.

Neak Pean is a Buddhist temple in an artificial island. The temple was originally designed for medical purpose. Visitors cannot get near the temple as it is enclosed by a fence. There were come locals cleaning the pond surrounding the temple on or visit.

That is the end of our temple tour. The Grand Circuit tour is less exhausting compared to the Small Circuit tour. You may do the Grand Circuit after a visit to Angkor Wat because there are lesser temple in this circuit.

Going Around Siem Reap Small Circuit Temples

After a half-day tour of Angkor Wat, we asked our tuktuk driver to take us to a place where we can have our lunch. The second-half of our day is visiting the temples which is part of the Small Circuit. Usually the Small Circuit tour will start in the Bayon Temple but since we decided to have our lunch first we will do the tour in reverse order.

The first temple we visited that is part of the Small Circuit is Banteay Kdei. Banteay Kdei means a "A Citadel of Chambers".

There are some stalls of paintings once you entered Banteay Kdei. The paintings differ in sizes. The paintings are usually about Angkor Wat or the other temples in Cambodia like the Bayon Temple.

A Buddha is placed in the entrance of the whole structure. Many Buddhist temples were built, including the Banteay Kdei, from middle of the 12th century to early 13th century.

Main attraction of Banteay Kdei is the large tree which located at the back. Below are some of the pictures of Banteay Kdei.

Just like Angkor Wat, Banteay Kdei has a lot of carvings. It is common to see Apsaras Devata carvings in the columns of the temple.

Restorations are being done for the temple. A project in 2004 by the University of California and Sophia University of Tokyo in partnership with the non-profit group Cyark was done. Laser scans of Banteay Kdei and and Angkor Wat Causeway were performed.

Located in the east side of Banteay Kdei is Srah Srang or "the royal bathing pool". The approaching steps to the water edge are flanked by two stone statues of lions with ornamented Naga balustrades. The rain already poured in so we were unable to take a picture of the lake.

Our next temple is Ta Phrom. Aside from its large trees with their roots sprawling over the temple, Ta Phrom became more famous after Angelina Jolie's Tomb Raider was done there.

Ta Phrom was a Buddhist temple. Ta Phrom was originally known as Rajavihara or the Monastery of the King. During that time, almost 80,000 people were required to maintain the temple.

Ta Phrom is one of the temples with many visitors and places of interest gets easily crowded. On-going restoration is being done when we visited the temple.

The next temple in the Small Circuit we went to is not for a person afraid of heights with open spaces. Known as the temple mountain is Ta Keo. The steps in Ta Keo are very steep making it hard to reach the top. The temple was never completed and restoration to preserve the temple is being done.

This is a glimpse of the interior of the temple. You can see the forest surrounding the temple when you are on the top.

Thommanon and Chau Say Tevada are small temples situated across each other. It was a break from all the large temples that we have explored. We only spent little time exploring these temples.

Another large temple that we visit is the Bayon temple. Bayon temple is famous for the stone face in its temples. There are 216 gigantic faces on the temple's towers.

Bayon was built around 1190 AD by King Jayavarman II. They say that that smiling faces of the temple is a portrait of King Jayavarman. Bayon is a Buddhist temple. At the entrance of the temple is a huge buddha. After the death of Jayavarman II, King Jayavarman III turned the temple to Hindu.

Bayon is the largest temple complex among the temples of Small Circuit. It might be quite exhausting just looking on how big the temple is.

Near the Bayon temple is Baphuon. Baphuon is a three-tiered temple located northwest of Bayon. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva. Most of the part of the temple has collapsed and restoration is still ongoing. Rubble of the temple can be seen on the entrance.

On the way back to our hotel, we saw the Terrace of the Elephant. It is part of the walled city of Angkor Thom. The Terrace of the Elephant now lay in ruins. It was used before by King Jayavarman II to view his returning army.

We still don't want to leave the place yet but it was almost 5PM and temple visits ends at this time. It was also already raining that time.

This is the second day of out Siem Reap tour which is mainly about Angkor Wat and the Small Cicuit temples.

A Day in Angkor Wat

This post is part of my Cambodia travel and I hope I could finish my other post of a more detailed information of my trip in Cambodia. Actually, my trip was more focus in Siem Reap. The province where the largest religious monument is located which is the Angkor Wat.

To give a much clearer picture of what to expect of Angkor Wat it is best to explain the whole Angkor Complex. This is a bit confusing when you are doing your itinerary and looking for details on how to plan your trip. The Angkor Wat is located within the Angkor Complex along with other temples like Angkor Thom and Bayon Temple.

The tour in Angkor Wat can be completed within three hours depending on your pace. We visited during the dry season and although the weather was very humid there are a lot of tourist in the place.

To be able to visit Angkor Wat and other temples you need to buy an Angkor Pass. A single day pass cost $37.00, a three-day pass is $62 which is valid for ten (10) days and the seven-day pass is worth $72. The Angkor Pass contains your photo which will be taken when you buy the pass. The Angkor Pass is bought in the Angkor Conservation Area ticket booth on Charles de Gaulle road. It is the road between Siem Reap and Angkor Wat. There is a checkpoint before entering the Angkor Complex wherein you will be required to show your pass.

There are lots of tour package for Angkor Wat but it is much cheaper to just hire a tuktuk driver to bring you to Angkor Wat and to the other temples.

When you visit the temples you will notice that they are usually surrounded by waters. A local explained to us that a pond or river surrounds the temples so that it cannot be easily invaded. In Angkor Wat, the temple is also surrounded by a forest.

The Angkor Wat is built for the God Vishnu. It was built during the reign of Suryavarman II. It was built as the king’s state temple and capital city. Angkor Wat was gradually transformed from a Hindu center of worship to Buddhism towards the end of 12^th century. Restoration of the temple started in the 29^th century which mainly involves the removal of the accumulated earth and vegetation.

Aside from its architecture, Angkor Wat is famous for its intricate carvings in the walls.

When you enter Angkor Wat, there is a corridor which is filled carvings. The corridor is less visited by tourists but is good place to start understanding how beautiful the temple is.

The Angkor Wat temple has five towers. The central tower of Angkor Wat symbolizes the Mount Meru which is considered as a sacred mountain

Since Angkor Wat is a temple which means it is holy, tourists must follow a dress code. Knees and shoulders should be covered. And they don't allow tourists to enter even if the shoulders are covered by just a shawl.

A view of the outer Angkor temple can be seen when you go up the towers. Dress code is strictly implemented when going up the towers. There are also only certain number of visitors allowed to climb the tower. There is a line to maintained in entering the towers. The stairs going to the tower is steep making it difficult for visitors to easily climb the towers.

There are some parts of Angkor Wat which is less visited by tourists which is some of the best place to take some pictures.

There are still some monks in the temple. It is strictly prohibited to take a picture with a monk. If you really want to take a picture with them, you must ask permission first.

Aside from tourists there are also locals whose main source of income is the tourism of Angkor Wat. There are photographers who will take your picture with the background of the temple. There are also stalls where you can buy some foods and souvenirs.

Tourists usually watch the sunrise over the Angkor Wat temple. We did our sunrise watching the next day since we bough a three day pass. Many tourists woke up early to watch the sunrise over the temple. Unfortunately it was a bit gloomy during our visit despite it is the dry season and the sun shine a faint color of pink and purple in the sky.

After a three or four hour tour in Angkor Wat temple, you may have an option to visit the Small Circuit temples or the Grand Circuit Temples.
