New Zealand vs Australia Live Streaming Score, Highlights – ICC Champions Trophy 2009 Finals Preview

It will be the same old rivals that will clash for the coveted Champions Trophy 2009; playing the finals. Australia will take on New Zealand at the Centurion, South Africa.

There is an interesting share here; both Australia and New Zealand won the title once each. Aussies are defending the title and the Kiwis won it in 2000 and courtesy Chris Cairns.

Australia though will go as pre-match favorites to lay their hands on the coveted trophy. Kiwis are battling injury woes, although they have had a convincing victory against the Pakistan they don’t look still their best form. In fact all fancied teams had to go out including India and South Africa. Although India had been unlucky with one match being abandoned due to rain. So New Zealand is fortunate to be here and should things including toss go in their favor, they can well pull up another surprise.

But New Zealand batting should come strong right from top; Brendon McCullum and Redmond. He debuted against Pakistan and although did not have had success; he cannot be written off soon, but a second game against a team like Australia should tease his batting and he will pick a lesson or two from the game, nevertheless. Daniel Vettori has been graduating lately into a wonderful all rounder that kiwis could depend and Elliot will prove to be the best bet lower the order, and if McCullum plays his best, there will be no stopping to the kiwis.

On the other hand Australia will be pleased with their continuing good form and there are many actually that are playing very good including Watson, Ponting, and Hussey among the batsmen and Brett Lee, Hopes and Siddle amongst the bowlers. They look a well jelled unit with balance of experience and youth. They will most likely retain the trophy.

Australia set to tame underdogs New Zealand

JOHANNESBURG: New Zealand will adopt a familiar role of underdogs when they confront title holders and hot favourites Australia on Monday in the

ICC Champions Trophy final.

Form and tradition are stacked against the 'Black Caps', but that will not concern skipper Daniel Vettori and his warriors ahead of the 50-over-a-side contest for a record $2 million first prize in Centurion.

While New Zealand once again boxed well above their middleweight status to oust Pakistan by five wickets in the semi-finals, the match never scaled the heights of 24 hours earlier when Australia crushed England by nine wickets.

The 247-run Australian batting masterclass starring unbeaten Shane Watson and skipper Ricky Ponting surpassed the totals of Pakistan or New Zealand and sent a chilling message.

Australia have long been a Champions Trophy bogey team for their neighbours across the Tasman sea, winning the three previous meetings in the mini-World Cup with something to spare.

The victory margin was 164 runs seven years ago in Sri Lanka, seven wickets in England in 2004 and 34 runs in India three years ago when the tournament was last staged.

Not that records will concern Ponting, who passed the 12,000 ODI run mark in the rout of England and lies third behind a cricketer he admires so much, Indian Sachin Tendulkar, and Sri Lankan Sanath Jayasuriya.

The 34-year-old Tasmanian is a team man first and last and says he will reflect on personal achievements in a game he has graced for a decade and a half only when father time decides the bat must give way to a rocking chair.

"Respect every ball," Ponting warned his team-mates ahead of the England slaughter and it will be no different against New Zealand at SuperSport Park just off the Johannesburg-to-Pretoria highway.

While resurgent Watson beamed after his 136 runs against England, the facial reactions of Ponting did not portray a man who had struck 111 and featured in a record Australian One-day stand.

It was great torturing old enemy England, but the mission was incomplete. Winning finals is what counts in the hyper-combative world of Ricky Thomas Ponting and he has two World Cups and a Champions Trophy to boast of.

Vettori is a great captain, too, and after a timid surrender to South Africa his team upset Sri Lanka by 38 runs, England by four wickets and Pakistan to reach their second final having beaten India in the 2000 Nairobi climax.

What the 'Black Caps' deliver is often far more than the sum of their parts and reached the final despite losing bowlers Daryl Tuffey and Jacob Oram and batsman Jesse Ryder to injury.

Australia had to reshuffle their pack as well after vice-captain Michael Clarke and star bowler Nathan Bracken caught the injury bug, but those left appear to have another all-round strength to celebrate come Monday night.

On the eve of the ICC Champions Trophy 2009, Australian captain Ricky Ponting expressed deep satisfaction for playing in ICC Champions Trophy.

"I think it's been an excellent tournament. It's been very rushed for us, and England, coming in as late as we did. But this has certainly been the best and most enjoyable ICC Champions Trophy that I've played in," opined Ricky Ponting.

Further he added, "To have the best eight teams, over a shorter period of time...people in this country and all over the world have enjoyed the One-day cricket played over the last couple of weeks. These events are about showcasing the game, and I think the ICC and the players have done a terrific job of making this tournament a spectacle for the 50-over game."

Ponting also expressed his opinion about making 50-over cricket more interesting.

He said, "The key issues with the 50-over game come down to the way teams want to play it. The middle overs have been what the administrators have been worried about. Bringing powerplays into the game has added a different dimension to it. If you want to play the game as best you can, as a batting side, you have to maximize those middle overs. If you do that, you'll make good scores. The more attractive the players can make the game, the more the fans will enjoy it as well", said Ricky.

Johannesburg: A relieved man after his side made it to the title clash of the ICC Champions Trophy, New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori says it was the burning ambition of winning a big tournament that helped the Kiwis cross the semi-final hurdle.

New Zealand broke their big tournament semi-final jinx, beating Pakistan by five wickets in the second last four match of the ICC Champions Trophy last night.

The Kiwis will now lock horns with traditional rivals and defending champions Australia in the final tomorrow.

"There is a real ambition in the side. There's belief and desire to win tournament instead of just ending up as semi-finalists," Vettori said after the victory.

"It's good that we came to this semi-finals on the back of two good wins. We carried the momentum forward, it wasn't as if we scrapped to the semi-finals," he added.

The Kiwi captain himself played a crucial role in his side's win against Pakistan with 41 runs and 3-43 spell, but he preferred to shower praise on Grant Elliot (unbeaten 75 off 103 balls) with whom he shared a match-winning 104-run stand for the fifth wicket.

Captain Daniel Vettori praised Grant Elliott after he batted with a broken thumb to lead New Zealand to a five-wicket win over Pakistan in Saturday's ICC Champions Trophy semi-final.

The all-rounder needed an injection before anchoring New Zealand's run-chase with 75 not out off 103 balls. Vettori said Elliott would need to have his thumb put in a splint for six weeks when the tournament ended.

"Grant played an innings of such character. He had his thumb injected and he couldn't feel it and he just gutsed it out," Vettori told a news conference after the Kiwis reached their target of 234 with 13 balls to spare.

"It was an outstanding 75 and he will be very proud of his innings and I know the team is really proud of the way he played," the skipper added after New Zealand set up a final meeting with Australia in Centurion on Monday.

Left-arm spinner Vettori also turned in a fine all-round performance, taking three for 43 and scoring 41 with the bat as he helped Elliott put on 104 for the fifth wicket.

"My main mission as captain is to lead by performance," he said. "Sometimes the actual captaincy side of things is overrated. It is about the team and how they perform. I think my team will follow me if I perform.

"We have not played well lately, until this tournament. But there is a belief in this team now."

Vettori was confident about New Zealand's chances in the final. "We know Australia will play well and we know they have great players but we have to think about what we are going to do," he said.

"Hopefully the team that has played for the last three games turns up and gives us a chance of winning."

Pakistan captain Younus Khan blamed his team's defeat on a poor batting display. After winning the toss and electing to bat Pakistan could only muster 233 for nine in 50 overs.

"Our batsmen got a couple of good starts but were not able to cash in. Yet again in this tournament we did not take advantage of our powerplays," said Younus.

"Daniel's all-round performance was fantastic. He makes a real difference to the New Zealand team."

Elliott leads Kiwis into ICC Champions Trophy final

Johannesburg: Grant Elliott struck an unbeaten half-century to steer New Zealand to a five-wicket win over Pakistan in Saturday's ICC Champions Trophy semi-final.

After Pakistan totalled 233 for nine, Elliott's 75 not-out led his team to 234 for five with 13 balls to spare as the Kiwis set up a final meeting with Australia in Centurion on Monday.

Elliott, who hit five fours and one six in his 103-ball innings, shared a 104-run stand with Daniel Vettori (41) for the fifth wicket before the captain was stumped by Kamran Akmal off spinner Saeed Ajmal.

New Zealand had struggled to 71 for three before Elliott and Ross Taylor combined for a partnership of 55. Taylor was then bowled by leg-spinner Shahid Afridi for 38 in 61 deliveries.

Ajmal was Pakistan's most successful bowler with two for 39 in eight overs.

Earlier, Ian Butler took four wickets after Pakistan had won the toss and elected to bat. The 27-year-old fast bowler claimed career-best one-day international (ODI) figures of four for 44 in 10 overs, fighting back in style after his first two overs had cost 20 runs.

Pakistan's score was built on Umar Akmal's second ODI half-century. The 19-year-old, playing in only his eighth ODI, scored 55 off 62 balls before being trapped leg-before by Vettori.

Akmal helped Pakistan recover from 86 for four by putting on 80 for the fifth wicket with Mohammad Yousuf (45). Yousuf went when he played a delivery from seamer Kyle Mills on to his stumps.

Spinner Vettori, 30, bowled with guile to take three for 43 in 10 overs, reaching 250 ODI wickets in the process.

Captain Ricky Ponting became the third batsman to reach 12,000 one-day international (ODI) runs as he guided Australia to a nine-wicket win over England in Friday's ICC Champions Trophy semi-final.

Ponting hit 111 not out and Shane Watson thumped an unbeaten 136, the pair sharing an unbroken second-wicket partnership of 252 to set Australia up for a final meeting with New Zealand or Pakistan on Monday.

"(Passing 12,000) is a nice little achievement I guess but I'll look at it when I have finished playing," Ponting said at the post-match presentation.

"(Squad member) Dave Hussey came out (to the middle) tonight and said, 'I wanted to tell you that you were getting close to 12,000 runs'. I had no idea, it's never been anything that motivates me, personal stats.

"It is about doing a job when it matters for the team so I'm happy I have been able to do that today," added Ponting.

The 34-year-old, who joins India's Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka in achieving the milestone, led from the front as Australia reached their target of 258 with 8.1 overs to spare.

Watson Relief

All-rounder Watson's innings came as a relief to the opener after a run of patchy form with the bat.

"I hadn't had a great start to the tournament at all although I felt my bowling was quite good. So it was good to get going today and nice to bring the team home," said Watson.

"I have been lucky to play in a few big games for Australia although I haven't played as much of a part in them as I would have liked. Today I wasn't too overawed, as I have been previously."

England captain Andrew Strauss accepted his team were well beaten after they had been bowled out for 257 in 47.4 overs.

"It was a very good pitch and we definitely wanted to play shots but it just didn't work for us," he said. "It was very frustrating to lose our first six wickets for 101 runs but I guess you live by the sword and die by the sword.

"We've got to keep playing shots and improving our skills. It just didn't gel for us today."

New Zealand sealed a place in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy after a stunning win over Pakistan by 5 wickets at The Wanderers.

Pakistan had made a disappointing 233-9 off 50 overs, with Umar Akmal (55) and Mohammad Yousuf (45) top scoring, although it was also grateful for an unbeaten stand of 35 for the tenth wicket.

In reply, New Zealand looked in trouble at 71-3 and struggled to score against some excellent bowling from the likes of Mohammad Aamer who took 1-32 in 10 overs.

But Grant Elliott (75 not out) and Daniel Vettori (41) timed the run chase to perfection, taking advantage of the batting powerplay, to comfortably achieve its victory by five wickets.

Sydney: Australia and New Zealand will play in the finals of the ICC Champion Trophy on Monday, with both the teams vying to make history.

The all-Antipodean decider is likely to add spice to the final, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Australia is aiming to become the first country to successfully defend the ICC Champions Trophy title following their win in India three years ago.

New Zealand will also be out to make history by becoming the first side to win the tournament twice, having won the 2000 edition in Kenya.

Australia topped their pool group and beat England by nine wickets in Friday's semi-final in Centurion.

The Black Caps also finished top of their group, and have now notched three successive wins, over Sri Lanka, England and Younus Khan's side

The workman like Kiwis have reached their second CT final. They bowled well and restricted the Pakistan side to 233. Then they relied on a team effort from their batsmen to see them through and thanks to Elliott and Vetto, that is what they got. It was a gritty performance from the Kiwis and they thoroughly deserve to be in the final. The Pakistan bowlers tried hard, but were unable to get anything out of the surface. Younis dropped Elliot on 42, an easy dolly of a catch and that proved to be the turning point.

Presentation Ceremony:
Vettori is the Man of the Match as well: We are happy, it all started with the way we bowled. 230 was a score we always felt we could chase. We haven’t been a consistent side, but over the last 3 games we have rallied together and if we can do it in the final we have a good chance. We planned to get it to 60 off 60 at the end and Elliot was exceptional in that over against Gul and that won it for us I think. It was a plan from the team for me to bat at No.6 and I will be staying there. It is going to be a tough ask against the Australians in the final.
Younis Khan: Maybe we were 20 or 25 short. We were struggling all the time and we collapsed in the powerplays. The plan was for the top 4 to stay there and make runs. It was a good pitch to bat and if we had made 250 it would have been good. If I had taken that catch, maybe the match would have changed. We are improving day by day.

The two teams last met in World Twenty20 at the Oval and Pakistan won with 6+ overs to spare (and read this in a 20-20 match). It will be another similar repeat by Pakistan. They have started as a rusty team but picked up form at the right time.

Pakistan cricket fans are all excited to see their team zoom past the semi finals and majority of betters are favouriting Pakistan in this match. Younis Khan too expressed very beginning of the tournament that his team will be there in the finals and take the Trophy to home. They are inching close to the captain’s words.

Still, we cannot underestimate New Zealand, they ended their fans’ frustration playing great game against the Sri Lanka. They have posted a mammoth total on board well contributed by Jesse Ryder, Guptill and Vettori. Sri Lanka faltered and could make 277 in reply.

Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill are the top scorers so far in the tournament and they are sure to give some tough time to Pakistan bowlers; Aamer will need to have special balls for these batsmen who have no respect for any bowler. I still believe New Zealand will spring a surprising result and might shock Pakistan.

Ponting won’t be happy without winning Champions Trophy

Johannesburg, Oct 3(ANI): Australia captain Ricky Ponting has said that he admires the rapid improvement that his relatively inexperienced team has made in the Champions Trophy and says that he won’t be happy till his team successfully defends its title.

Australia, who defeated England by nine wickets in Friday’’s semi-final at SuperSport Park, will now play against the winner of the other semi-final between New Zealand and Pakistan on Monday.

“We”ve been talking about playing at a level that is going to get us into big games. At the start of the England series we were focusing on being prepared for the Champions Trophy and being in a position like (Friday’’s) where we can play our best cricket when it matters,” the AAP quoted Ponting, as saying.

“If you look at our team I guess it probably is a new era. To have Michael Clarke and Nathan Bracken not take any part inthe Champions Trophy at all and to have this group of relatively young guys make it through to a final is a good achievement in itself. But, we won”t be happy until we peak in the final,” he added.

Ponting further said that he was particularly satisfied with his own performance and added that the short break that he took after the Ashes series has helped him a lot to improve his game.

Ponting scored his 28th ODI century during the game against England and was also had an unbroken stand of 252 with Shane Watson, which is the biggest partnership by an Australian pair in ODI’s.

“I was particularly keen to get out there and play well. When the Australian team took the field I think we had a different sort of energy and aura about us than we probably have had for a while,” Ponting said.

“That’’s my job, as an experienced player and leader, to make sure the guys get into that frame of mind as well. I pride myself on big games and I think all us experienced players do. It’’s up to players like myself to set the example and lead from the front,” he added. (ANI)
