Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo Saturday April 28th

Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo is coming up in April. We are looking at getting a group to go on the 28th the Saturday for a same day trip. Doors open at 10am and close at 7pm. Tickets at the door are $25 per person or $20 in advance through the site www.calgaryexpo.com

Not bad day so far. Finalized a booking for in a few weeks. Got another booking for earlier tonight, went back out to the base and got another trip in, now just waiting for 12am to come around to take the first group back home to the base.

Popular games tonight on the way into Med Hat were Mario Kart and Wii Sports for the bowling. Yes you can play bowling in the van, if you know how to cheat! Which we teach all the soldiers how! Might have to ride with us to find out :)

Just trying to make up a post for those of you who will be posted at BATUS in Ralston, Alberta.

Banff, Alberta is 4 hours away from Ralston (CFB Suffield or BATUS). It's in the Rocky Mountains and it's an area that you'll find people from all over the world there. No discrimination there like Medicine Hat.

It's worth the travel time (especially when you get movies to watch or play Wii Games all the way there and back with us).

Plan this trip for the weekends or days where you have a couple days off so you can enjoy either touring around there or just partying it up.

Our Price for 1 to 13 people One Way is $530

We do pickups from Banff as well if we've dropped you off and it's the same price back.

So for a group of 13 people that's $40 each way per person. Can't beat that for prices by renting cars or other forms of transportation. Why rent a car when if we take you, you don't have to worry about someone not being able to drink cause they're the designated driver?

Sticker Price Wrong at Hat News and Tobacco? They Make You Pay More #medhat

So before heading out to the base today we headed over to Hat News and Tobacco because they carry pizza from one of the places we like. Of course they don't have any so we grab sandwiches instead. Got everything up to the till and the clerk starts ringing everything into the till. She gets to the sandwich Alan grabbed looks at the price sticker on it and says "Go grab another sandwich, I can't sell you this one cause the price is wrong it's too low" Ummmm what the hell? We told her that she had to sell it for the price that was marked. Nobody changed the sticker. Who ever wrote the price on the sticker by hand wrote the wrong price.

It was the only sandwich of that kind and Alan didn't want any others. So we told her to stuff it, she was in the wrong and should be giving customers items for the price marked on them and then we walked out and went somewhere else.

DONT go to Hat News and Tobacco unless they're the only ones who sell the item. There's other stores in the area who sell some of the same items.

We're going to try and sit out there probably from 5pm on to 9pm tomorrow. If you need a ride down to Canex and back let us know. Don't pay those other taxis $10 or more for the one way to Canex when we're sitting in the line, we charge $5 each way.

You won't see us probably on Friday or Saturday out there. We've got bookings from BATUS going to Calgary Friday and then Lethbridge Saturday. We'll also be booked up on Sunday for return trips from those cities.

Trips that start outside the Medicine Hat boundaries

do not have to be booked in advance

but please

be courteous and give us an hour notice

just in case we're not out at the main gate.

Especially during the winter months,

when we don't necessarily sit at the base.

Sundays we never sit at the base and are usually in Medicine Hat. We accept trips on Sundays but we're busy from 10:30am to 2:30pm unless you book ahead at least the day before.

If we are in Medicine Hat it takes us about 35-45 minutes to an hour to get to the main gate, depending on traffic, previous customers and road conditions.

We ask for at least an hour booking so we can get to you on time.

Make sure and ask about our Customer Loyalty card. Ride with us 5 times into or from Medicine Hat or Redcliff and then get $10 off your next trip in. (If you want it off a bigger trip you'll have to negotiate that with Alan in the van)

Our Prices (each way)

Canex / Ralston / Gym 1-13 People $5 or $10 for round trip with 10 minute wait included; round trip with 20 minute wait is $20. Must be paid up front. We will wait no longer than 20 minutes. If your WHOLE group is not out within 20 minutes we head back up to the gate and you have to call and pay an additional $5 to get to the gate.

Sorry everyone. No trips going out today. White out conditions across Southern Alberta. Don't travel. People are already going in the ditches. We'll see how tomorrow goes.

Oh and City of Medicine Hat... please use Calgary as an example and start using the snow melting chemical they use. It works after -10C unlike salt which doesn't and keeps the roads clearer than you're salt and gravel.

Oh and sorry but the Wii Game System is down until we get enough business to replace it. All I'm going to say is it "broke". It was my fault and it wasn't in the van at the time.

Alan's laptop that we use in the van to run the movies decided to overheat and quit on us last night. Wasn't under warranty anymore, that expired 6 months ago.

So off down to Microdyne Computer Services we tried to go. Well last we knew they were down on South Railway Street here in Medicine Hat. They weren't there. So off to home we went to look up the phone number. Phoned them and they talked Alan through a possible fix. Which worked.

Thanks Microdyne for saving us tons of money we don't have right now to invest in a new laptop that's as good as this one to play our movies and keep Alan happy with his games!

Glimpse into New Canadian-Somalian Life

Well this weekend was a long one. {EAV_BLOG_VER:954ecacfacc8d719}

First on Friday we had a trip to Calgary from Medicine Hat through Saamis Immigrate Services which made trip number 4 through them.

Then on Saturday we had a trip to Edmonton from Medicine Hat through Saamis again. We got the trip up to Edmonton with very little problems, they spoke the least amount of English of all our 5 Saamis trips so far. Made us think we've got to come up with a cue card system with English on the one side and their language on the other side so things like bathroom stops can be understood. This time we just stopped in Strathmore at Husky and the little bit of English they spoke was ok for us to relay to them where things were.

We got them to the home of their relatives in Edmonton and unloaded. One of the little boys that lived there already came up to both Alan and I and told us "I remember you". I was like "Really?" "Did we drive you up here?" He said "yes". He had been part of the 10 person family we drove up to Edmonton back around April of this year. They had been our first Saamis trip. When we drove him up to Edmonton we are pretty sure he didn't speak English at all or very little. He is now pretty fluent from what we heard talking with him. He couldn't have been more than 8 years old.

To our surprise we were asked to park the van and come inside for some food. So we did.

One of the brothers sat down at the table with us while everyone else was busy either in the kitchen or in the living room or other parts of the town house. He explained some of their customs, where they were from (Somalia) and how long he had been here in Canada. Before we started eating other members of the family who we drove up in that first trip came and greeted us. We recognized the 80 year old couple that was part of the original group. They were really happy to see us.

Eating with them was sure different. The food wasn't really different (seared / baked chicken legs, beef (at least that's what we think it was - and it was really good) and rice which I think was just cooked in broth. It was all delicious. Also very different in the way they eat.

Busier day than we were Expecting - British Army, BATUS Soldiers

So far a good day at the base. Trips down to the CANEX were slow and non existent today. Well okay we had one that went down and then called us back to come get them.

Got a smaller trip into Medicine Hat and then tried staying in the city. Well that didn't exactly work. We were in Wal-mart shopping like usual when a call came in.... "Can you come and get us? We're going into Med Hat and there's 9 of us." Me - "Okay it'll be 30 minutes". Stupid forgot that 1. It's 35 minutes from Wal-mart and 2. We weren't even through the main till yet.

So we hurried up to the tills waited in line, paid for groceries, and then headed out to the base. I figure we were about 10 minutes late. Not bad. We were surprised they were still there. Patiently waiting and no comments about being late were made. Fully knowing what most of these soldiers are like in big groups they probably were late getting down to the gate as well. They're usually 5-10 minutes late. Not always but usually.

They were the guys who high-fived me yesterday after or before a trip from the CANEX. Can't remember why they did, but they did. Probably over our price vs the other taxis.

They happily seat danced their way into Medicine Hat. Especially with Green Day (can't remember the song name) and Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night (TGIF)" while playing the Wii.

Now we have a booking at 1am to bring them back. Wonder if they'll remember. That and I wonder how many we'll actually get back. Usually lose a few.
