April 18 Marks the 107th Anniversary of the Great 1906 Earthquake

The April 18, 1906 earthquake ranks as one of the most significant earthquakes of all time. Beginning at 5:12 a.m., with the epicenter located near San Francisco, the shocks were felt as far north as Oregon and as far south as Los Angeles.

As the earthquake anniversary looms, it presents the opportunity to begin a dialogue with your family and community about emergency preparedness in your home or workplace.

This April, we are providing you an incentive to become better prepared as it relates to water. We want you to share a photo of your water-related emergency preparedness tips. Tweet us @WSIPInTheNews or email us at wsip@sfwater.org now until April 30, and let us know what you're doing to be a local water hero by demonstrating (via photo) or sharing your own tips.

Bay Area residents, social media influencers and city agencies who participate will receive a pen and certificate.

The 107th anniversary of the devastating 1906 earthquake is coming up on Thursday, April 18th.

This April, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) encourages all Bay Area residents and business leaders to take the time to discuss plans, supplies and ideas with your family and community to ready your home or office for an emergency or catastrophic event.

Be a Local Hero Contest!

This April, we want to know your tips for emergency preparedness and any precautions you and your family or office have taken to be prepared for an earthquake or natural disaster.

Tweet us @WSIPInTheNews between April 8 and 12, and let us know what you're doing to be a local water hero by demonstrating (via photo) or sharing your own tips. Participants will receive a pen and certificate.

We'll retweet some of your tips during the week of April 15, but are encouraging your participation all month long. All cities and residents are eligible for a certificate by tweeting us your tip or showing how your city, home or office is a local hero.

Restoration Work Continues!

The Contractor will grind and pave eastbound Bennett Road and Edgewood Road on Monday, March 11th from 7:00am to 7:00pm.

Bennett Road – Eastbound Bennett Road will be close from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM with the necessary traffic controls to direct traffic.

Residents from 2 Bennett Road to 12 Bennett Road will not be able to drive in or out during restoration work hours. Please make the necessary vehicle parking arrangements to park outside your driveway and off eastbound Bennett Road on Sunday, March 10th.

Edgewood Road – During grinding and paving work, the Contractor will close one lane at the time and will have the necessary traffic controls in place to direct traffic. Expect delays and use alternative routs when possible.

Hydro-seeding Completed, Restoration Continues!

Steve P. Rados, Inc. continues performing restoration work at the various sites of the Cordilleras Micro-Tunnel Project.

The Hydro-seeding process was completed for the SFPUC Right Of Way Areas at the hill on Bennett Road, the receiving shaft area on Edgewood Road and the staging area on Rathgar Ct. above Edgewood Road by utilizing a spray-on seed and fertilizer mixture.

The hydro-seeding process will prevent surface erosion during the rainy weather. Once the vegetation grows it will create a habitat for local animals and wildlife. The pollinating flowers will attract native birds and bees and contribute to the local eco-system. For example, the federally endangered Mission Blue Butterfly feed on lupine (which is a part of this California native hydro-seed blend).

Landscape restoration at the Jacking Pit area on Bennett and Cordilleras Roads will begin on the week of March 4th and will take about two weeks. While this work is taking place, the Contractor will also complete the remaining “punch list items” such as restoring street pavement and concrete curbs.

Restoration Work Currently Taking Place!

Steve P. Rados, Inc. has begun restoring the Cordilleras Micro-Tunnel Project multiple sites after successfully completing installation and welding of 1,397ft of new pipeline as part of the 9-mile Bay Division Pipeline No. 5 Peninsula Project.

Restoration work at the Jacking Pit area on Bennett and Cordilleras Roads is partially completed. Curbs and gutters of Bennett Road median are done; pavement and landscape restoration will take place during the last week of February and beginning of March.

During the last week of February, the Contractor will also hydro-seed the hill on Bennett Road, the receiving shaft area on Edgewood Road and the staging area on Rathgar Ct. above Edgewood Road utilizing a seed and a fertilizer mixture.

This seed mixture is a blend of 24 approved California native grasses and flowers. The hydro-seed blend is non-toxic and will re-establish California native vegetation on the Right of Way.

Pipeline Installation Completed!

Steve P. Rados, Inc. has successfully completed installation and welding of 1,397ft of new pipeline as part of the 9-mile Bay Division Pipeline No. 5 Peninsula Project.

At the Jacking Pit on Bennett and Cordilleras Roads, the Contractor is currently installing a manhole structure on top of the newly installed pipeline that will allow the SFPUC Operations Department to access the pipe when needed for future maintenance.

During the second week of February, Rados, Inc. will be hydro-testing the 1,397ft of pipeline recently installed to make sure no leakages occur when the Bay Division Pipeline Peninsula No. 5 is brought to service.

During the same period of time, the Contractor will be installing a 63ft long 16” service pipeline that will eventually be connected to water service from BDPL5 at a later time outside the Cordilleras Micro-Tunnel Project. Interruption of water service to local residents and businesses during this installation work is not anticipated.

Restoration work at Bennett and Cordilleras Roads is expected to begin towards the beginning of March.

At the Receiving shaft site on Edgewood Road, the Contractor has successfully backfilled the site and restored top soil getting the area ready for hydro-seeding.

Hydro-seeding is the process of applying a seed mixture and a fertilizer on the ground. This seed mixture is a blend of 24 approved California native grasses and flowers. The hydro-seed blend (including the fertilizer and bright green color) is non-toxic and will re-establish California native vegetation on the Right of Way.

The Contractor will continue with construction activities in the Right of Way this Saturday, February 9th. Working hours will be 8:00AM to 5:00PM.

Cordilleras Micro-Tunnel Project Last Phases

The Jacking Pit on Bennett and Cordilleras Roads, has been back-filled!

The Contractor is currently demolishing and removing a portion of the steel beam reinforced concrete piles that form the walls of the jacking pit to continue the installation of the pipeline segment coming out of the shaft and connecting with the pipe under the median.

Early next week, Steve Rados, Inc. will install a manhole structure on top of the newly installed pipeline that will allow the SFPUC Operations Department to access the pipeline when needed for future maintenance.

At the Receiving Pit on Edgewood Rd., the Contractor will be grouting the pipeline’s inside joints; completing the installation of pipe spools. Shortly after, the site will be back-filled to begin final restoration during the second half of February.

The Contractor will continue with construction activities in the Right of Way this Saturday, February 2nd. Working hours will be 8:00AM to 5:00PM.

Cordilleras Micro-Tunnel Project Near Completion!

The Cordilleras Micro-Tunnel Project expects to wrap up by the end of March.

At the Jacking Pit on Bennett and Cordilleras Roads, the Contractor is currently building a concrete base at the bottom of the shaft for the 90degree pipeline segment coming out of the micro-tunnel. Shortly after Steve Rados, Inc. will remove the second and third levels of steel shoring structures from the shaft and continue with the installation of vertical pipeline segment.

This work requires hauling and delivery trucks accessing the site. Occasional street closures on Bennett Rd. with traffic controls can be expected.

At the Receiving Pit on Edgewood Rd., the installation of the last two pipeline segments and tie-in to BDPL5 is currently taking place. This work requires the demolition and removal of the shaft’s concrete walls.

The Contractor will continue with construction activities in the Right of Way this Saturday, January 19th. Working hours will be 8:00AM to 5:00PM.

Concrete being poured to create a base for the pipeline at the Jacking Pit and steel shoring structures to be removed shortly.

Last two pipeline segments to be installed at the Receiving shaft on Edgewood Rd.

Steve P. Rados, Inc. has successfully completed the installation and welding of 468ft steel pipeline through the Cordilleras Micro-Tunnel! Tunneling equipment, including the Minnesota origin Micro Tunnel Boring Machine is currently being demobilized from both construction sites at Bennett Rd. and Edgewood Rd.

During the last week of 2012, the Contractor will install the vertical steel pipeline connections from each end of the Cordilleras Micro Tunnel to the surface.

During the first week of 2013, Cordilleras Micro-Tunnel Project will complete installation and welding of 1,397ft of new pipeline as part of the 9-mile Bay Division Pipeline No. 5 Peninsula Project.

Occasional closures during construction hours will continue during this time with traffic controls to maintain access to Bennett Rd. Please follow all signs and directions from our traffic control personnel.

The Contractor successfully installed the new steel pipeline segments from top of Bennett Rd. hill and across Bennett Rd! The open trench has been back-filled and will be fully restored when construction activities are completed.

Pipeline installation is now taking place on the Bennett Rd. median and inside the Cordilleras micro-tunnel. As for the rest of the open trench pipeline installation, construction on the median involves digging a trench, laying and welding the segments of pipe, then backfilling the trench.

Closure of east bound Bennett Rd. will continue throughout the week of December 10^th.. Occasional closures during construction hours will take place the following two weeks for pipe segment deliveries and crane swings when lowering pipe segments into the Cordilleras Micro-Tunnel shaft.

Traffic controls will continue to maintain access to Bennett Rd. during construction hours. Please follow all signs and directions from traffic control personnel.

After completing the excavation of the 486ft Cordilleras Micro-Tunnel, concrete lined steel pipeline segments have been delivered to the site. Installation from top of hill on Bennett Rd. down to the median on Bennett Rd. has begun and will continue throughout the next three to four weeks depending on weather conditions.

Pipeline construction involves digging a trench, laying and welding the segments of pipe, then backfilling the trench.

Cordilleras Micro-Tunnel is fully excavated!

Last Friday afternoon the micro tunnel boring machine (MTBM) broke through after excavating 468ft of hard rocky material giving form to the BDPL5 Cordilleras Micro-Tunnel! The MTBM arrived at the Receiving Pit Side (near Woodhue Court and Edgewood Road) and the Contractor is now taking it apart to retrieve it from the receiving shaft. The 72” diameter pipe casing segments continued to be inserted and welded of as the MTBM moved along becoming the metal walls of the micro tunnel.

The Contractor is now demobilizing all the tunneling equipment from the Jacking Pit Side, grouting annular space between the tunnel and casing and preparing to install and weld the new 60” water pipeline segments inside the 72” diameter micro tunnel.

Construction work from top of the hill on Bennett Rd. to the median will begin after Thanksgiving weekend; the Contractor will install the new 60” pipeline using an open trench process which involves excavating the trench, laying and welding segments of the pipe, then backfilling the trench.

This work will require the full closure of Bennett Rd. from the median to the hill side as crews work in the street. Traffic controls will be in place. Metal plates will be installed to cover the open trench to restore traffic flow after construction work hours.

Micro-tunneling and the hauling of excavated materials continues at the Jacking Pit side on Bennett Road, Redwood City. The Contractor has already advanced nearly 200ft of the 468ft tunnel. A 72” diameter pipe casing is inserted and welded as they micro-tunnel. The new drinking pipeline will be installed once the tunnel is complete.

Please note that Saturday work is scheduled for October 20th and 27th. Work hours are 8am to 5pm. On October 20th, the Contractor will have the tunnel machinery serviced so the microtunnel operation will not begin until midday.

The 23rd anniversary of the freeway-flattening Loma Prieta earthquake is coming up on October 17th. In the event of a similar emergency, will you be prepared? Will you have enough drinking water?

Make This October Emergency Preparedness Month!
The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) operates the Hetch Hetchy Regional Water System, which provides high-quality drinking water to 2.6 million residents and businesses across four Bay Area counties. The SFPUC is making the investment to seismically upgrade regional water facilities, tunnels, and pipelines. However, it is important for you to remember that smaller pipelines leading to your home might be damaged in an earthquake.As a result, water from your tap may be unavailable for up to 72 hours or longer.

To prepare for an emergency:

Keep a 3-day water supply just in case!
• Each family member needs 1 gallon per day
• Store tap water in food-grade plastic containers; replace every 6 months
• Store bottled water in the original sealed containers; replace according to expiration date.

If your supply runs out, you can treat your water!
• Boil it for 3 minutes, or disinfect it by adding regular household bleach
• Add 8 drops of bleach per gallon of water
• Shake or stir then let it stand for 30 minutes

What’s with all the green stuff on the Right of Way?

The Right of Way is almost returned to pre-existing conditions. All of our neighbors have received their in-kind fence and driveway restoration. Local commercial properties have use of their storage areas and parking lots. Flood Park, Fleischman Park, Red Morton Park and North Fair Oaks Playground are open to the public. All that remains is a few punch list items and most importantly our General Permit condition to establish vegetation on the bare soil by hydro-seeding the Right of Way.

It is a very exciting time for the BDPL5 Cordilleras Micro-Tunnel Project right now! The Contractor is getting the Right of Way ready for micro-tunneling to begin September 20, 2012.

On the Receiving Pit Side (near Woodhue Court and Edgewood Road), the Contractor drilled relief holes through the harder rock of the tunnel shaft. This will allow for easier excavation of the receiving pit when they reach the bedrock. Crews will start digging the tunnel shaft with an excavator on Wednesday of this week. All work will be on the Right of Way and should have minimal impact to traffic on Edgewood Road.

The tunnel subcontractor on the Jacking Pit Side (on the Bennett Road median) began mobilizing to the site in preparation to begin micro-tunneling. Another large crane was brought on site to lower the MTBM (micro tunnel boring machine) and other materials into the 40ft deep shaft.

The guide rails were lowered into the shaft last week. This guide rail system will keep the MTBM on line and will guide the 60” water pipeline into 72” bored tunnel. It is estimated that the Contractor will launch the tunnel head this week and begin the micro-tunnel on September 20, 2012. (More on the anatomy of a MTBM later this week- stay tuned!)

All 24 secant piles have been installed forming the walls of the receiving pit.
The Contractor is drilling relief holes through the harder rock so they can begin excavation of the receiving pit next week on September 12, 2012.

Over Labor Day Weekend (8/31 to 9/4), work is scheduled to begin on the installation of a new five-foot diameter drinking water pipeline across Edgewood Road in San Mateo County.

The new pipeline will be installed using an open trench process which involves excavating the trench, laying and welding segments of the pipe, then backfilling the trench. This work will require the full closure of Edgewood Road from Cervantes Road to Cordilleras Road as crews work in the street. Traffic controls will be in place.

The closure of Edgewood Road will begin August 31st at 10:00 p.m. and last until September 4th at 6:00 a.m. During this time, traffic will detour to Cordilleras Road.

We appreciate your continuing patience and support as this critical work takes place to improve your drinking water delivery system. We will work to minimize inconvenience although road detours are necessary. This new drinking water pipeline is an essential component for maintaining the Hetch Hetchy Regional Water System, which supplies nearly 100% of your community’s drinking water and delivers water to over 2.6 million residents in the counties of Alameda, Santa Clara, San Mateo and San Francisco.

This construction is part of the SFPUC Water System Improvement Program, a $4.6 billion bond-funded program to seismically upgrade and repair the regional water system’s aging pipelines, tunnels, and dams. The BDPL5 Project is delighted to announce that the North Fair Oaks Playground is open to the public! Thank you to all of our neighbors and the community that uses this playground for their patience throughout construction.
