But one mysterious girl fills her sheet of paper with rows of apparently random numbers instead. Fifty years later, a new generation of students examines the capsule's contents and the girl's cryptic message ends up in the hands of young Caleb Koestler. But it is Caleb's father, professor John Koestler, who makes the startling discovery that the encoded message predicts with pinpoint accuracy the dates, death tolls and coordinates of every major disaster of the past 50 years. As John further unravels the document's chilling secrets, he realizes the document foretells three additional events -- the last of which hints at destruction on a global scale and seems to somehow involve John and his son. When John's attempts to alert the authorities fall on deaf ears, he takes it upon himself to try to prevent more destruction from taking place. With the reluctant help of Diana Wayland and Abby Wayland, the daughter and granddaughter of the now-deceased author of the prophecies, John's increasingly desperate efforts take him on a heart-pounding race against time until he finds himself facing the ultimate disaster -- and the ultimate sacrifice.

Buy the movie poster for Push

The Division, a shadowy government agency, is genetically transforming citizens into an army of psychic warriors--and brutally disposing of those unwilling to participate. Nick Gant, a second-generation telekinetic or "mover," has been in hiding since the Division murdered his father more than a decade earlier. He has found sanctuary in densely populated Hong Kong--the last safe place on earth for fugitive psychics like him--but only if he can keep his gift a secret. Nick is forced out of hiding when Cassie Holmes, a 13-year-old clairvoyant or "watcher," seeks his help in finding Kira, an escaped "pusher" who may hold the key to ending the Division's program. Pushers possess the most dangerous of all psychic powers: the ability to influence others' actions by implanting thoughts in their minds. But Cassie's presence soon attracts the attention of the Division's human bloodhounds, forcing Nick and Cassie to flee for their lives. With the help of a team of rogue psychics, the unlikely duo traverses the seedy underbelly of the city, trying to stay one step ahead of the authorities as they search for Kira. But they find themselves square in the crosshairs of Division Agent Henry Carver, a pusher who will stop at nothing to keep them from achieving their goal.

But when inexplicable events begin to happen, Casey begins to understand why she left. Plagued by merciless dreams and a tortured ghost that haunts her waking hours, she must turn to the only person, Rabbi Sendak, who can make it stop. With the help of Sendak, her best friend Romy and boyfriend Mark, Casey uncovers the source of a family curse dating back to Nazi Germany--a creature with the ability to inhabit anyone or anything that is getting stronger with each possession. With the curse unleashed, her only chance at survival is to shut a doorway from beyond our world that has been pried open by someone who was never born.
Buy Movie Posters

SHRINK * New Music Video "HERE" by Jackson Browne...in Theaters July 24th

What happens when the people we count on to hold us together…are barely holding it together themselves? Jonas Pate's Shrink is a striking, fast-paced exposé of the “other” Hollywood, featuring folks living outside their comfort zone and the people who put them there. Henry Carter (Kevin Spacey) is a psychiatrist with an A-list clientele, including a once-famous actress (Saffron Burrows), an insecure young writer (Mark Webber), and a comically obsessive-compulsive superagent (Dallas Roberts). Henry is not in a good place, however. He has been asked to take his first pro bono case, a troubled teenage girl from a neighborhood far from the Hollywood hills. Considering his present state of mind, is he ready for the real-life troubles of a young woman who loves the world of movies he has become so jaded by? At its core, Shrink is a study of control and our endless need for it, even when it grows increasingly impossible to obtain. Writer Thomas Moffett uses classic archetypes in this modern Hollywood tale, but never pushes them over the edge of credibility. Performed by a well-matched cast at the top of their form, the result is both satisfying and exhilarating. Watching Shrink makes us feel like voyeurs looking through a window into the lives of people who look great, feel worse, and end up behaving badly.

Buy Movie Posters

Bruno official trailer at ireel.com

There are actors and then there are ACTORS. Sacha Baron Cohen is one of those ACTORS. His style has always seemed to include fully committing himself to the role of the character he has decided to take on, really showing his dedication to his work. First he gave us Ali G., a satirical character displaying the stereotype of a non-black British suburban male who consumes himself in black and Jamaican culture through hip-hop and reggae. Ali’s job description included interviewing various public figures in the UK, shocking them with his street image and his deeply stereotypical view of the world.

Then came our beloved Borat Sagdiyev, a popular Kazakh journalist traveling through the United States recording real-life situations on the behalf of the fictitious Kazakh Ministry of Information. The majority of the film features unscripted scenes of Borat interviewing and interacting with Americans, who truly believe he is a foreigner with little or no understanding of American customs, and they go out of their way to teach him their customs. He in return goes out of his way to further stereotype the image of a foreigner.

Now comes Brüno, a flamboyant Austrian fashionista who decides to take his show across the water to the USA. Similar to Ali and Borat, Brüno is also a reporter. However his niche includes fashion, entertainment, celebrities, and homosexuality. His interviews get funnier depending on how much of a prejudiced person the interviewee is, for the extremists he presents them with an over the top stereotype persona of a homosexual irking prejudice responses from them. I for one cannot wait to see the film, Sacha has been awesome in his acting, whether it be his own characters on TV and his feature films, or if its an assigned character in a movie such as his Talladega Nights’ Jean Girard, a homosexual NASCAR champion. It won’t be long, a month flies by in the summer we’ll all be rushing in once the film is released, I would in no way be surprised if this movie does well in the box office. Watch for it coming to theaters July 10!

This movie stars unknown actress Tricia O'kelley as the sassy morning weather girl Sylvia. The movie follows her ups and downs as her life unravels at the beginning of the movie. She's 35 has a tv job and is living with the morning news show anchor. She thought everything was going well until she discovers he's been cheating on her. Then everything falls apart, she breaks down on tv, quits her job and moves in with her younger brother. This movie is a comedy, but it does have a well developed story line. The comedy is light, realistic and fits well in the movie. As the movie goes on you see Sylvia's struggle with relationships and finding a job now that she's known for having a meltdown on tv. The movie was pretty good. The cast is mostly unknown with small parts from Blair Underwood and Mark Harmon as the cheating host Dale. The movie is good in that it feels real, not ridiculous or unbelievable. You just get to see Sylvia, her comedic struggles with life and how it all comes together in the end. I would recommend this movie if you're looking for something good, different, and not the same old big budget movie where you can predict every scene before it occurs.
Buy Movie Posters

Happy 4th of July from Popcornmonsters.com

Happy 4th of July from Popcornmonsters.com. Look for other great movie reviews on Popcornmonsters.com.

No one could stop Dillinger and his gang. No jail could hold him. His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone—from his girlfriend Billie Frechette (Cotillard) to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression. But while the adventures of Dillinger’s gang—later including the sociopathic Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham) and Alvin Karpis (Giovanni Ribisi)—thrilled many, Hoover (Billy Crudup) hit on the idea of exploiting the outlaw’s capture as a way to elevate his Bureau of Investigation into the national police force that became the FBI. He made Dillinger America’s first Public Enemy Number One and sent in Purvis, the dashing “Clark Gable of the FBI.’’ However, Dillinger and his gang outwitted and outgunned Purvis’ men in wild chases and shootouts. Only after importing a crew of Western ex-lawmen (newly baptized as agents) and orchestrating epic betrayals—from the infamous “Lady in Red’’ to the Chicago crime boss Frank Nitti—were Purvis, the FBI and their new crew of gunfighters able to close in on Dillinger.

Scrat is still trying to nab the ever elusive nut, while maybe finding true love. Manny and Ellie await the birth of their mini-mammoth. Diego the saber toothed tiger wonders if he's growing too soft and Sid the sloth gets into trouble when he creates his own makeshift family by hijacking some dinosaur eggs. On a mission to rescue the hapless Sid, the gang ventures into a mysterious underground world, where they have some close encounters with dinosaurs, battle flora and fauna, run amuck and meet a relentless, one eyed, dino-hunting weasel named Buck.

Meet Genevieve. She loves romance. She loves flowers. She loves Valentine's Day. All of which is fitting as the owner of "Roses for Romance," a quaint flower shop in the heart of a friendly Brooklyn, NY neighborhood. Her one problem is that she hates relationships. Having been hurt numerous times in the past when it comes to matters of the heart, Genevieve keeps herself happy by not letting any one man in. Dating is a game to her, a game she is very good at. Genevieve doesn't get dumped and never gets hurt because she doesn't stick around long enough for things to get ugly. Then she meets Greg.
Buy Movie Posters

Couples Retreat Trailer, in theaters October 9

Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau, Malin Akerman, Kristin Davis, Kristen Bell and Faizon Love star in Universal Pictures’ upcoming comedy Couples Retreat. Based on an original idea of Vaughn’s, the comedy follows four Midwestern couples who embark on a journey to a tropical island resort. While one of the couples is there to work on their marriage, the other three set out to jet ski, spa and enjoy some fun in the sun. They soon discover that participation in the resort’s couples therapy is not optional. Suddenly, their group-rate vacation comes at a price. What follows is a hilarious look at real world problems faced by all couples. The film also stars Kali Hawk and Jean Reno.

I thought this was a very good movie. A good story kept the movie going, and this one didn't need any special effects or over the top events. This movie is about a high school football star, Mike (played by Matt Long) who returns home from college with a new girlfriend, Elizabeth (played by Jessica Stroup). His high school sweetheart Shelby (played by Mischa Barton) never really forgot about him. In fact, she is obsessed with him and doesn't believe they are really broken up. After there first night in Mike's hometown, Elizabeth disappears. What happened to her? Did she go back to an ex-boyfriend? Was she nervous about meeting Mike's parents, or is there something sinister going on? You might be able to guess that Shelby has something to do with it. I don't want to give too much away. The best movies are the ones where you don't already know the whole movie from a trailer or review. This movie has a small cast, but the acting is well done and believable. Overall, I really enjoyed this movie. It keeps you on the edge of your seat watching for what will happen next and trying to guess how it's all going to end. The story line is interesting and the whole movie comes together with all the pieces coming together at the end. Thrilling, scary, suspenseful...one you will enjoy watching at the theater. Watch it in theaters July 17.
Buy Movie Posters

Street Fighter and other movies out on DVD this week

Look for these new movies out this week on DVD. This was a good movie. When it first came out I really had no desire to see it, I didn't care about the transformers. I had heard that it was a good movie and so we rented it. It is packed with action. It's a pretty long movie, 1 hr and 23 min, but it keeps moving the whole time. If you like action packed movies and special effects you will love it. The transformers come to Earth in search of the "cube". It is an energy source that creates life. Megatron, the head of the evil decepticons, wants to find it and take over Earth's technology and get rid of the humans. The good autobots are led by Optimus Prime. Each transformer is a car, truck, plane, etc. that transformers into a huge robot with special abilities. The movie begins at an air force base in the middle east that comes under attack by some huge machine. A few survivors are left who contact the gov't. and try to stop the transformer. The machine has somehow hacked into military computers and taken all the information it could. From here the movie turns to high school student Sam out to get his first car. The car, a transformer named Bumblebee, really chooses him. Eventually Sam meets all the transformers and learns of the cube and how they hope to save the world. Optimus Prime wants no humans hurt, only to stop Megatron from obtaining the cube. Sam has a tie to Megatron in that his great-grandfather discovered him while exploring the arctic circle many years before. Megatron was frozen in the ice and Sam's grandfather activated something on him that produced a laser and imprinted the map of the cube's location onto his glasses. Sam now owns these glasses and is trying to sell them on ebay. That is how the transformers find him. From here it's just action packed. There is a subplot with some computer experts trying to trace the source that has hacked into the military computers to steal all their information. A lot goes on in the movie, but it is not hard to follow. I would recommend this movie if you're looking for a good, fun action movie. It's funny at parts, has a good story and keeps you watching the whole time.
Buy Movie Posters

New features on Public Enemies Home Page

Check out the new features on the Public Enemies Home Page. Public Enemies will be in theaters this Wednesday, July 1!
Helmed by acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann, PUBLIC ENEMIES boasts a star-studded cast that includes Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Academy Award® winner Marion Cotillard. Sanborn and Specialist Owen Eldridge of Bravo Company are at the volatile center of the war, part of a small counterforce specifically trained to handle the homemade bombs, or Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), that account for more than half of American hostile deaths and have killed thousands of Iraqis. A high-pressure, high-stakes assignment, the job leaves no room for mistakes, as they learn when they lose their team leader on a mission. When Staff Sergeant William James takes over the team, Sanborn and Eldridge are shocked by what seems like his reckless disregard for military protocol and basic safety measures. And yet, in the fog of war, appearances are never reliable for long. Is James really a swaggering cowboy who lives for peak experiences and the moments when the margin of error is zero - or is he a consummate professional who has honed his esoteric craft to high-wire precision? As the fiery chaos of Baghdad swirls around them, the men struggle to understand and contain their new leader long enough for them to make it home. They have only 38 days left in their tour of Iraq, but with each new mission comes another deadly encounter, and as James blurs the line between bravery and bravado, it seems only a matter of time before disaster will strike.
Buy Movie Posters

Confessions of a Shopaholic Now on DVD

Look for these new movies out this week on DVD. I've had the Premonition disc sitting around for months, and simply didn't get around to watching it. After I did, I was glad that I finally got to it.
Sandra Bullock plays Linda Hanson, a suburban housewife with a husband and two young daughters. Her life is pretty much average, until one day she awakens to the reality that her husband is dead. However, she keeps getting premonitions (hence the title) of other adverse events that are going to happen affecting herself and family. As the tale gets told, in a series of nonconsecutive days of the week, we learn about marital difficulties with her husband, her relationship with her mother, the daughter's accident that she can't remember, and a psychiatrist that thinks she's psychotic works on getting her committed.
Premonition reminded me of another film that runs out of order, Memento. In that film, the story is told backwards to simulate the memory disorder where the main character has no short term memory. In Premonition, we're a lot more jumbled as there's no true order, but characters and subplots keep getting revealed in bite size pieces for easy digestion. While it sounds like it is very confusing, I'd say that it's only mildly so, and makes us identify with our protagonists unsettling feeling of each time she wakes up to start a new day, she's not sure if her husband is alive or dead.
Overall, I enjoyed Premonition. It's an interesting drama, that attempts to break new ground in the sequence of storytelling. Also, don't miss the DVD's featurette that shows the story sequence chronologically after you see the film to get some insight on how the whole thing fits together.
Overall Grade: B+

Focus will hold worldwide rights to any features that Neal Street produces. Focus CEO James Schamus made the announcement today.
Mr. Mendes’ new movie Away We Go was released by Focus this month, and last weekend broke into the national boxoffice Top 20 while playing on only 45 screens; its per-screen average of $12,463 is the highest of any film in the Top 20. The picture will open in additional cities and theaters throughout the month. Directed by Mr. Mendes from an original screenplay by Dave Eggers & Vendela Vida, Away We Go stars John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph. Away We Go was produced by Edward Saxon, Marc Turtletaub, and Peter Saraf; Mari Jo Winkler-Ioffreda and Ms. Harris were the film’s executive producers.
Focus president of production John Lyons and senior vice president, international production Teresa Moneo will work on the Neal Street films. Among the projects in development by Neal Street at Focus are:
Butcher’s Crossing, an adaptation of the classic 1960 novel written by John Williams and described by The New York Times Book Review as “perhaps the first and best revisionist Western.” Gabe and Alan Polsky of Polsky Films are producing with Neal Street. The epic adventure set in 1870s America follows Will Andrews as he forsakes his Harvard education and lands in the small Kansas town of Butcher’s Crossing, where he is drawn into a sweeping hunt for one of the last great buffalo herds. No screenwriter is yet assigned to the project.
Middlemarch, an adaptation of George Eliot’s classic novel of the same name, which explores diverse lives and changing fortunes in a provincial 1830s English community. Screenwriter Andrew Davies has written the current draft.
Mr. Schamus commented, “After our extraordinary experience on Away We Go, we knew we would work together again with Sam. The range of Sam’s interests and skills as a filmmaker is limitless, and he is a magnet for top talent in front of and behind the camera.”
Mr. Mendes said, “I’m absolutely thrilled to be in partnership with Focus. I have long been a huge admirer of what they do, and my experience of working with James Schamus, John Lyons and the Focus team on Away We Go has been nothing but enjoyable. I know I speak for both myself and Pippa Harris when I say that we can’t wait to make some more movies with them, and soon.”
Founded in 2003 by Sam Mendes, Caro Newling, and Pippa Harris, Neal Street Productions has enjoyed a string of screen successes, including Revolutionary Road, Starter For Ten, Jarhead, Things We Lost in the Fire, and Away We Go. Neal Street is also prolific in the theater world, having recently received a total of 15 Tony nominations for Shrek The Musical and Mary Stuart. Neal Street Theatricals is currently represented on the London stage by Mr. Mendes’ Bridge Project – a double bill of The Winter’s Tale and The Cherry Orchard at The Old Vic. Ms. Newling comes to Neal Street from London’s Donmar Warehouse; Ms. Harris hails from the BBC, where she was Head of Drama Commissioning.
Focus Features and Focus Features International (FFI) together comprise a singular global company, dedicated to producing, acquiring, financing, selling, and distributing original and daring films from emerging and established filmmakers – films that challenge mainstream moviegoers to embrace and enjoy voices and visions from around the world. The company’s flexible and nuanced approach to distribution allows it to support a wide range of films, from those geared to a single local market to worldwide hits.
