The engine is the heart of your car, but instead of pumping blood, the engine pumps air and fuel. The engines main function is to convert air and fuel into rotary motion so it can drive the wheels of the car. How does it do that ??.... Well let's start with a cutaway of the engine and see all the major parts then we will get into the actual mechanics.

Pistons: Most common engines have 4, 6, or 8 pistons, which move up and down in the cylinders. On the upper side of the piston is what is called the combustion chamber where the fuel and air mix before ignited. On the other side is the crankcase, which is full of oil. Pistons have rings which serve to keep the oil out of the combustion chamber and the fuel and air out of the oil.
Crankshaft: The crankshaft is connected to the pistons via a connecting rod. As the piston moves up and down in the cylinder it rotates the crankshaft and converts the straight line motion into rotary motion.
Valve train: The valve train consists of valves, rocker arms, pushrods, lifters, and the camshaft. (shown in above picture in blue, yellow, and green) The valve train’s only job is that of a traffic cop. It lets air and fuel in and out of the engine at the proper time. The timing is controlled by the camshaft, which is synchronized to the crankshaft by a chain or belt.
Now that we have a general overview of the parts involved let's talk about what happens. Most automotive engine today are 4-stroke (or 4-cycle) engines, meaning they have four distinct events which make up the cycle.

· Intake stroke: The camshaft opens the intake valve and the piston moves down the cylinder. This creates vacuum and sucks in air and fuel into the combustion chamber above the piston.
· Compression stroke: As the piston starts moving back up the cylinder the intake valve closes and seals off the combustion chamber. The causes the air and fuel to compress.
· Power stroke: As the fuel is compressed and the piston nears the top of the cylinder the spark plug fires and ignites the fuel and air. This explosion pushes the piston back down the cylinder and drives the crankshaft.
· Exhaust stroke: After the piston reaches the bottom of the cylinder, the exhaust valve opens and the gasses left over from the fuel and air are sent out to the exhaust system.
Put these four events together in the above order and you have a complete cycle. Are you asleep yet? That's enough theory, let's talk about the real world and problems you might encounter with the above mentioned parts.
Pistons: Remember I talked about the rings, which seal the combustion chamber from the crankcase. The rings over time tend to wear out. When they wear they allow the fuel and air to enter into the oil and dilute it. This dilution reduces the oils ability to lubricate your engine and can cause premature wear. Also if the rings wear down they can allow oil from the crankcase to enter the combustion chambers. This will result in oil being burned and exiting your tailpipe as grayish/white smoke. If your car spews grayish white smoke and it does not go stop in the first few minutes after start-up you might have warn rings. If the smoke goes away after start-up look to the valve train section.
Crankshaft: The crankshaft rides on bearings, which can wear down over time. The bearings support the crankshaft and also the rods, which connect the pistons to the crankshaft. A loud medium pitched knocking noise in the engine points to warn bearings most of the time. This is usually a costly repair and involves removing the crankshaft and either machining the surface where the bearings ride, or replacing the entire crankshaft. To prevent this type of problem, use a high quality oil, change your oil at suggested intervals (3 months or 3000 miles is a safe number) and always maintain your oil level between oil changes.
Valve train: Remember the oil smoke problem mentioned above in the piston sections. If your car only smokes grayish/white smoke at start-up you may have leaking valve seals. Valve seals keep oil from above the valve from leaking into the combustion chamber. When they wear, they can allow oil to seep into the combustion chamber and collect there until your start the engine again. You generally do not get oil leaking past the valve seals while the engine is running since the seals expand with the heat of the engine and plug the leak.
Another common problem is the timing chain or belt will slip or even break causing the cam shaft to stop rotating. Remember the camshaft tells the valves when to open and if it stops spinning then the valves stop opening and closing. No valve moving, no engine running :-)
A term you will here when talking about timing chains and belts is "interference engine". When an engine is an "interference engine" the pistons and valves are so close together that if the valves were to stop moving (broken belt or chain) and the crankshaft kept spinning they would crash into the piston. (that's the interference) This crash tends to do bad things to an engine, breaking valve, bending pushrods, and even cracking pistons. This is why most manufacturers recommend changing the timing chain or belt every 60,000 miles. Timing belts dry out, stretch and deteriorate over time so even if you do not have 60,000 miles on the car think about changing the belt after it's 6 years old.
Preventive Maintenance:

· Change your oil regularly.
· Give your engine a chance to warm up before driving if possible. Let the oil get into all parts of the engine before driving. This is even more critical in cooler temperatures when the oil is cold and sluggish.
· Change your timing belt or chain at your manufacturer's recommended interval.
· void "snake oil" additives advertised on late night TV. Regular oil changes and good maintenance habits will keep your engine running it's best.
· If you have a turbo charged engine, give the engine a minute or two cool down before turning it off. This cool down period allows oil to circulate and cool down the bearings. If you shut off the engine immediately after hard driving, the oil can gum up around the hot bearings and create problems down the road.
What to discuss with your mechanic:

· If you have to replace your engine, discuss the benefits of buying used versus new. If you plan on keeping your car for some time, a new engine might be the best bet. Sometimes new engines are not much more expensive than rebuilt ones, and offer the best solution.
· When trying to diagnose engine noises, be as descriptive as possible. Take note to when the noise occurs; at what throttle position, and when the noise started occurring. Sometimes changing the weight of oil being used can cause a new noise to crop up. Make sure you mechanic knows if you changed oil brands or weight recently.

3000 Mile Maintenance

Change the oil in your engine every 3000 miles. The filter should be changed at the same time. Newer synthetic oils are said to last longer without breaking down. When you change the oil, check the fluids, the air filter, tires, hoses and belts. At this time check the battery cables and terminals for corrosion. This can be removed with a wire brush or sandpaper.

5000-10,000 Miles:

Have your tires rotated and balanced every five to ten thousand miles. This helps the tires wear evenly and extends the life. The best tires should be put in the front of the car. Check the tire pressure regularly and check the tread for signs of uneven wear or damage.

15,000 Miles:

Change the air filter every 15,000 miles. A clean air filter improves the fuel economy of your car. A dirty air filter can cause the engine to run rough and stall. At this time you should also check the pads and shoes on your brake system. Check the brake fluid and top it of, as needed. The fluid should be clear. If you notice noise when the brakes are applied or the steering wheel shakes or vibrates, this can be an indication that the brakes need replacing. 30,000 Miles:

Check the fluid level on your transmission. The owner's manual will have information about the kind of fluid that should be used in your car. The manual should have directions on how to drain and replace the fluid. The pan gasket should be changed when the fluid is drained. Also at this time, give the car a tune up. Replace all spark plugs and wires.

50,000 Miles:

Change the coolant at 50,000 miles. See the owner's manual for directions on how to perform this task.

Remember to take care of your car's finish. You want the paint to remain in good condition for as long as possible. The double din car stereo has come a long way since they were first introduced, are continuing to evolve and add more functionality all the time. From the basics of listening to the radio, they have become much more than an entertainment system with many now offering the ability to use them as GPS navigators and connecting your phone to make calls with.

Not only do they have great screen real estate (usually around 6.5”-7.0") many of them are also touch screen, which makes it a lot simpler to control whilst driving. Compared to fiddling with nobs and dials, you just need to press an on-screen button or two to do the same thing.

This extra screen size also allows us to see more information than is available on the older single din that can only display two or three lines of text, and often scrolls the information, meaning you have to look at the screen for longer. The double din car stereo on the other hand can give you the same, or more, information in a single glance, which allows us to focus on driving. Which is what I’m told I’m supposed to be focusing on.

The screen in most cases also allows us to watch movies and even play console games (providing the stereo comes with the right holes to plug it in). Whilst we shouldn’t watch movies while driving, it can provide entertainment for others in the car on long trips, and for the driver when sitting stationery in the car for periods (waiting for the other half while their shopping?).

If it comes with Bluetooth, chances are you’ll be able to connect your phone to make hands-free calls, which is especially handy with so many places making the use of phones while driving prohibited. Changing the Oil in Your Car - A Basic How-To

Changing the oil in your motor vehicle is one of the most basic maintenance steps in responsible vehicle ownership. Unfortunately, it is also the one that auto and lube shops most commonly overcharge for. An oil change can be accomplished in less than an hour, and with very little physical work. All it takes is a few basic tools, a little bit of research, and some patience!
Before you begin, it is important to make sure you have the tools and parts you will need to complete the job properly. For most vehicles, all you will need to complete an oil change at home is:

* A socket or open-ended wrench
* A catch-can to hold the old oil
* A funnel
* At least one clean rag
* One new oil filter for your vehicle
* New oil to fill your vehicle with

You may have to purchase some or all of these tools. Everything on this list can be purchased at most of the major-name department stores. Funnels, automotive rags, and catch-cans should be available for a dollar or two. To ensure you select the correct type and amount of oil, as well as the correct oil filter for your vehicle, refer to the owners manual.
Getting the Job Done
An oil change can be accomplished in most passenger vehicles in five easy steps. This is assuming the job is done on a level garage floor, and that the vehicle sits high enough for you to reach the oil drain plug and oil filter without lifting the car. If there is not enough space, you will have to raise the car with a jack and place it on jack stands before beginning.
1) The first thing you need to do is remove the old oil from the vehicle. This is best done with the engine warm, but not hot. If your vehicle is cold, start it up and let it idle for a minute or two before beginning. You can still proceed if you have just driven your vehicle recently, but be aware that the draining oil will be very hot.
To locate the oil drain plug, refer to your owners manual. Slide your oil catch can down under the vehicle, positioned under the oil drain plug. Using a socket or open-end wrench, remove the oil drain plug. You will want to make sure your hand and arm are not in front of the plug as it is removed, or it will be covered with the draining oil!
You may have to let your vehicle sit and drain for 5-10 minutes.
2) Now, you need to remove the old oil filter. Locate the filter, and position the catch-can underneath it. You can remove the filter by twisting it off with your hand, or you can use a special oil filter wrench available at auto parts stores. Some people also elect to use a strap-wrench.
As the filter comes off the vehicle, an additional 1/2 quart of oil or so will drain. There is a rubber gasket at the top of the filter that should come off attached to the old filter. If it does not, you will need to pull it off of the engine yourself.
3) Replace the old oil filter with your new one. Before placing the new filter on the car, you will need to prepare it by filling it with some of the new oil. The amount your filter will hold depends entirely on its size and type. You will also want to take a small amount of new oil on your finger and rub it along the rubber gasket on the new filter. This will ensure proper fitment and a good seal.
When placing the new filter on the vehicle, it is best to tighten it on by hand. It is very easy to over-tighten the filter with a wrench, causing leaks. Get the filter on to that it fits snugly against the engine.
4) Fill the engine with new oil! Of course, before you start filling, you should re-attach the drain plug on the bottom! While filling, be careful not to pour too quickly and cause your funnel to overrun. Oil spilled over the engine can take a LONG time to burn off, and will cause smoke and bad smells.
Ensure you add the proper amount of oil using the dipstick. It is very important to wipe the dipstick with your clean rag each time you remove it to prevent contaminants from getting into the engine.
5) Clean up! All of that old oil that drained out of your vehicle is hazardous to the environment, and needs to be disposed of properly. You can use your funnel to transfer the oil from your catch-can to the empty container(s) your new oil came in.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT toss your old oil out in the trash! You can dispose of it safely by dropping it off at any quick-lube shop and most mechanic shops. They will dispose of it properly and safely for free, and will thank you for helping out the environment!
Now that you're done, you can stand back, admire your work, and think of ways to spend that $40 - $70 you just saved by avoiding the shops and doing the work at home!

Internal combustion engines run on heat, the fuel and air mixture is ignited to produce thermal energy, which pushes the pistons, spins the crankshaft and drives the vehicle. The hotter the engine runs, the more efficient it becomes, but there is a limits to that, eventually the engine will overheat and damage will be rendered . Normal operation temperature range for most engines is 195 to 220F, at these temperatures the thermostat should be open all the way to fully utilize the efficiency of the radiator. Keeping the engine at constant temperature is also important for fuel economy and proper performance of your vehicle. Every time you engine overheats, there is a chance it will undergo a significant amount of damage, which can result in very serious consequences, and eventually you can kiss you engine goodbye. The most common result of overheating is detonation, you will experience hammer-like blows that will damage engine components. Some of the common damage engine parts may be, rings, pistons, rod bearing, head gasket, and valvetrain components.

There are many things that can go wrong in the engine bay, that will result in the decrease of the radiator's ability to absorb, transport and dissipate heat. Anything that will prevent the mixture of water and ethylene glycol, or antifreeze, from performing it's normal cooling cycle; where it passes through the engine block and gets heated, and then through the radiator where it loses the heat through the atmosphere, and eventually goes back to the engine block to cool it. Water pump, thermostat, or loss of coolant are the more common reasons that cause the constant circulation of coolant to be disrupted, after which temperatures begin to rise, and the inevitable happens. Insufficient performance of the OEM radiator, under different circumstances, however, is probably the most common cause of overheating for performance vehicles that are put through strenuous heat cycles and endurance situations.
Factory radiators are designed for performance in vehicles with OEM power output and daily-driven conditions. Once you start upgrading your vehicle with aftermarket performance parts, and pushing the limits of your vehicle with strenuous activities on and off the track, the heat generated by you engine increases, therefore making the OEM radiator unable to perform the sufficient enough task as a "heat exchanger" to adequately cool your engine. When internal corrosion takes place, over time the radiators tubes get fully plugged from rust and sludge, deteriorating on the coolants normal cycle, resulting in overheating, yet again.
