I do not think I should bother you with what visa-free travel means because I hope you already know what it is. However, for the sake of those who do not know what a visa-free travel is, it is just a method of travelling out of your location without a visa. This method of travelling is ordinarily not available for Nigerians.

However, due to research and some intelligent collaboration with our foreign partners, we are glad to inform you that Nigerians now have a way of travelling out of the country visa-free. Yes! We mean Nigerians can now join the league of people globe-trotting without a visa. This is now possible through participation in EU Citizenship Programmes which are a better option compared to the US- Diversity Visa Lottery Programme and its likes.

Some smart Nigerians have benefitted from this visa-free travel without telling their closest friends how they made it. They see it as a closely guided secret which must not be revealed to their mothers not to talk of their friends. They now travel the world without visa, work in structured organisations, school in tuition-free institutions, pay very small amount in tuition fees where required, enjoy the best medical facilities, do not join the queue in embassies where they require visas, and enjoy social amenities provided as their rights. TRAVELLING OUT: HOW EXPENSIVE IS IT?

Just like any worthwhile venture, travelling too has its cost implications. But despite the claim by Nigerians that ‘things are tight’ (meaning that economic conditions are not favourable), a good number of us still pay so much money to visa agents in order to get out of this country. Surprisingly, however, some Nigerians do not care how much they will pay to get visa to anywhere. Little wonder Nigerians are found in every country of the world! Most of them are still struggling to make ends meet despite having been in foreign lands for decades. The entered as illegal immigrants!

Depending on your perception and destination, travelling out of Nigeria costs little to the traveller. A number of factors come into play in determining which cost is ‘little’. It may be worthy of mention to let you know where Nigerians travel to most. Visits to embassies, consulates and high commissions in Lagos and Abuja will reveal the commonest travel destinations for Nigerians as USA (known amongst travellers simply as America), UK (often referred to as London by travellers), Ireland (known as Dublin in travel parlance), the Schengen States (mostly called Europe by travellers), China-PRC (known as Shinko), Singapore, Malaysia and Ukraine. Canada is not mentioned here because most people who wish to go there do not always want to go to Ghana for their visa processing.

One fact I should not forget to let you know is that most travellers engage the services of ‘agents’ to secure visas to all these destinations. This is because most people do not know how to go about the visa processing, or they do not have the time to do the running, or they rely on the ‘insider’ links of the agents. Being an agent myself, I must confess that not many visa applicants know what the consular officers actually want from them. Leave visa applicants to do the processing on their own, you will find out that over 90% of them will be refused.

The above reason accounts for the high fees charged by visa agents in assisting applicants. Though, from my personal experience, most agents record as much as 80% success rate in their visa applications. This often justifies the high fees charged.

Visiting visas for Ireland and the Schengen States are currently being processed at an average of N450,000 only. UK and USA are the most expensive at an average of between N650,000 and N1+ million respectively. China, Malaysia, Singapore and South Africa average of N150,000 to N200,000. All the visas are for short stay only.

Because most of the visas are for short stays only, most Nigerians abroad are residing in the foreign lands illegally. They often refuse to leave for Nigeria when their visas expire. However, when they are caught they find themselves in prisons before they are eventually deported home.

WHY DO NIGERIANS RELOCATE TO FOREIGN LANDS?

This title can aptly qualify as a million dollar question even though it sounds rhetorical. However, I will try my best in answering the question to the best of my ability. Meanwhile, regardless of the number of reasons one may adduce as the cause(s) of this unending exodus of Nigerians, mostly youths, from their fatherland I will only aggregate all the reasons as just one. Lack of hope in the country and its leadership!

NIGERIA: ANY HOPE FOR A BETTER FUTURE?

It is common knowledge that this our country has no promising future for the average Nigerians. It is an understatement to say that our political leaders are insensitive to our plights as citizens of this country despite its very high potentials.

Constant and regular supply of electricity has become so elusive that when occasionally we are given supply for up to 2 hours continually in a day we think it is a mistake on the part of the power authority (PHCN or NEPA as we still call it). We have been so use to irregular and low-voltage power supply! We all can imagine what this problem alone is causing you and me.

Our governments see nothing wrong in our universities being shut down for months owing to ASUU strikes. Even the standard of education has fallen so much that parents now aid and abet their wards and children in exam malpractices. After all, no parents want to continue spending on a child to write WAEC-SSCE or NECO-SSCE more than 2 times maximum.

The health sector is not spared of the insensitivity of our leaders. Many supposed Teaching Hospitals are not better than local health centres in developed nations. Other health facilities are as good as mortuaries.

Our roads have become death traps over the years. Many innocent lives are lost on a daily basis in road accidents owing to the poor states of the roads.

To worsen the already bad situation, religious, ethnic and communal violence are gradually becoming a part of our live.

Crime and criminality are on the increase. Kidnapping that started like a child’s play has now become a cherished ‘profession’. Because no one can tell who the next victim will be, you carefully choose where to go in your fatherland. Some parts of the land are ‘no go’ areas. Nothing seems to be working normally in our beloved country!

A visit to the international departure lounge of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMA) in Lagos will definitely charge your emotions. You will see youthful Nigerians who should be its strength trooping out of the country in their numbers. ‘To where?’ you may ask. Of course, to better countries where ‘animal rights’ are respected; where human rights are too precious to be trampled upon; where social amenities are rights and not privileges; where governments listen to the complaints of their citizens; and where everything works normally. Do you blame those travelling out of Nigeria to seek better living conditions? If you do, I don’t. And if you must be sincere to yourself, I know you will not blame them. After all, who no want better life? I ask: who no like better things? If you don’t, I do. I know you too do!
