Microsoft on One Windows, the future of Windows RT, and more

2014-04-12T09:46:00.003+05:30

Terry Myerson, Microsoft's Executive Vice President of Operating Systems, has provided more details of the idea behind 'One Windows'. He also shared updates on the 'Windows Embedded' platform as well as the future of Windows RT.

In an interview with ZDNet, Myerson said the One Windows concept may have been misunderstood. According to him it "is the one developer platform across the Internet of things, phone, tablet, PC, Xbox, PPI (Perceptive Pixel touch displays), the cloud." He adds that through this concept, the developers can target the whole Windows ecosystem at a time, and not keep themselves limited to specific OS versions or devices.

When the future of Windows RT was brought up, Myerson seemed to give further credence to the rumours that a future version of Windows may run on x86 and ARM systems, instead of being a separate fork like Windows RT. "We want to take advantage of the innovations in ARM, he said. "I think ARM chipsets have a bright, vibrant future, and Windows will run on those chipsets."

Furthermore, Myerson was quite bullish about the future of desktop. "We actually value using the desktop. I feel highly productive using it. It's very familiar to me. We plan - (as) we talked about at the Build conference - to bring modern apps to the desktop. We are going to have machines that have a great desktop experience. The desktop is part of our future. It's absolutely core to Windows."

2014-03-26T06:00:00.000+05:30

Samsung is all set to launch the Galaxy S5 in India on 27 March. As of now, there is no word whether the Samsung Gear 2, Gear Neo and Gear Fit will also be launched in India on the same day.

Update: Samsung has officially sent out invites for the event on Thursday.

However, it's worth pointing out that the Galaxy S5 will be available in India starting 11 April 2014 - the same date as Samsung had announced as global availability (150 countries) at its Galaxy S5 unveiling at MWC 2014.

Microsoft: Here's $100 if you drop Windows XP

2014-03-22T09:49:00.003+05:30

April 8 is the day support for XP ends. So, Microsoft is reaching into its bag of discount tricks to get users to drop the decade-plus old operating system.
If you own a PC with XP and upgrade at the Microsoft Store, you get $100 off, 90 days of free support, and a "free data transfer," as spotted by Neowin.
The offer includes a new PC or Surface device priced at $599 or more and excludes Surface 2 "and some PCs," Microsoft said.
And you have to make an online purchase with a Windows XP machine or take an XP PC to a physical Microsoft Store.
wants to "make things better" for users without touch screens.
So, if you hail from the mouse-centric world of XP, the Windows 8.1 update should be the most palatable Windows 8 to date for XP users.
Those changes include new right-clickable context-sensitive menus, the ability to pin Metro apps to the Desktop task bar, and adding dedicated search and power buttons to the Start screen.
Meanwhile, the countdown for the end of support for XP continues. "There will be no more security updates or technical support for the Windows XP operating system," as Microsoft has made amply clear.

The suit calls for Fitbit to notify every person who has bought the Fitbit Force device in the state of California, and to arrange to refund the $130 cost of the device, plus tax and any shipping fees. It also calls for Fitbit to provide a full disclosure of the cause of the wrist irritations.

10 Harvard Business School Startups You Should Know

2014-03-14T06:00:00.000+05:30

You may not need a degree to start a great company, but many founders have degrees — advanced degrees — from top business schools. One such school producing tech startup founders is Harvard Business School — some of the most successful startups that came out of it include Gilt Groupe, Rent the Runway and Birchbox.

At Harvard Business School, student ambitions aren't what they used to be. In the old days, the top program pumped out management consultants and investment bankers. Today, entrepreneur in residence Jules Pieri says she has to counsel students to not feel guilty if they don't start a business on the side while in school.

Samsung Galaxy S5 to be cheaper than Galaxy S4 at launch: Report

2014-03-12T06:00:00.001+05:30

Samsung finally took the wraps off its latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S5, amidst much fanfare at MWC 2014 in Barcelona.
The South Korean manufacturer at the event however, did not reveal a price for its Galaxy S5. According to a Korean report, Samsung is in talks with various international mobile carriers, before it announces an official price.

Phone Arena, citing a Korean publication, has claimed that Samsung is considering pricing its latest 2014 flagship lower than the competition, such as the Sony Xperia Z2. Further, if the Korean report is to be believed, the company might price the Galaxy S5 lower than the company's 2013 flagship, the Galaxy S4 (launched in India at Rs. 41,500 last year).

More Nokia X Android smartphones on the way despite Microsoft deal

2014-03-11T06:00:00.001+05:30

While most were surprised by Nokia's move to release an Android-based smartphone given the impending acquisition of its mobile phone business by Microsoft, the Finnish mobile giant insists it's business as usual.
Jussi Nevanlinna, Vice President for Mobile Phone marketing for Nokia, answered a series of questions, including one that directly addressed the 'strange' timing of the announcement.
"I can't speak on Microsoft's behalf; what I can say is our strategy with Mobile Phones has been, and remains, connecting the next billion," said Nevanlinna. "Microsoft is equally focussed on 'mobile first; cloud first'."

Nokia Lumia 525 review

2014-03-10T09:58:00.001+05:30

Nokia is trying to be something to everyone with its current lineup of Lumias - they come in a variety of shapes, sizes, materials and colours. However the nature of Windows Phone as an OS hasn't made it easy for Nokia hit all the right price points. Nokia's devices were either too premium or too weak to capture the interest of buyers in the critical sub-Rs. 10,000 mass market.

That started to change with the introduction of the Lumia 520. With its low price, bright colours and unique design, the Lumia 520 was a breath of fresh air in a dull market segment overflowing with similar-looking Android phones from second-tier brands. According to a recent report, the Lumia 520 accounts for nearly 45 percent of all Windows Phone devices sold in India, and just over 25 percent worldwide.

Shifu review

2014-03-09T06:00:00.001+05:30

One of the big upsides of using an Android phone is the sheer scope of customisation that is available to users. Rooting your phone and choosing a completely different version of the operating system isn't hard, but otherwise there is a whole laundry list of apps that can change everything from the way your phone looks to the way it works.
Shifu, by Delhi-based The Signals, is one such app, which lets you outsource the job of remembering what's important and when to do it. The app keeps running in the background and tracks how you're using your phone. It also requires access to your phone's calendar. So it knows, for example, that at 9AM every day, you're traveling from home to office, and it knows that you're going to take half an hour to get there.

The developer claims that it can even analyse your commute patterns (detect if you've taken the metro and therefore have time to read, for example) and make suggestions from your to-do list based on all these facts. What makes it powerful is that it's simple and easy to set up, and as you keep using the app, it starts to build patterns based on your usage, and make suggestions accordingly. If there's any actions that you make regularly, then Shifu will start to suggest them to you based on a predictive algorithm, when it thinks you're likely to want to repeat that task - something like calling your driver every evening when it's time to leave office, for example.

Samsung Galaxy S5 variant with metal body, QHD display coming in May: Report

2014-03-08T06:00:00.001+05:30

Samsung Galaxy S5, which was unveiled in Barcelona at the sidelines of MWC 2014, could soon have company in the form of a premium variant that could launch in May.

A new report emerging from Korea has claimed that the South Korean manufacturer will announce a new premium line-up of smartphones dubbed Galaxy F and a Samsung Galaxy S5 variant sporting metal body and beefed up specifications that the leaks had indicated, would be its first member.

The report claims that premium Galaxy S5 will sport a Quad HD display and the rear camera will feature OIS (optical image stabilisation), a feature that is missing in the Samsung Galaxy S5 unveiled earlier this week. In addition, the report claims that Samsung, which has been using plastic body for its devices, will finally change gears and introduce a metal chassis for its alleged Galaxy F smartphone range, in-line with previous reports. An earlier report had even claimed that a Galaxy S5 variant featuring QHD display has entered mass production.

Tipster Ricciolo has also claimed that due to the HTC M8 (codename for the HTC One successor) Samsung's 'luxury' Galaxy S5 variant will be announced in May. The tweet said, "Due to M8 shipping in april, you will see the LUXURY S5 version with metal+exy+better screen in about 2 months from now on."

App Converter Bridges Tizen-Android Divide

2014-03-07T06:00:00.001+05:30

The first Tizen phones may still be on the horizon, but at least one software provider is already planning ahead. This week at Mobile World Congress, Infraware Technology debuted software that can port Android apps to Tizen.

Both Android and Tizen are based on open source Linux, of course, but that doesn't mean their native apps are compatible. With that in mind, Infraware's Polaris App Generator is designed to enable Android applications to operate on the Tizen mobile OS without additional development or customization.

Boeing Unveils Suicidally Secure Smartphone

2014-03-06T09:51:00.001+05:30

Boeing this week filed an application with the United States Federal Communications Commission for a secure Android smartphone called the "Black" that will self-destruct if anyone tries to physically open the case.

The company will offer it to the U.S. defense and security communities.

The Black has embedded hardware security features, can be configured through software policies, and has endless modularity capabilities, according to Boeing.

"With hardware encryption and other security solutions, you can significantly reduce the potential threat of attacks," Jim McGregor, founder of Tirias Research, told TechNewsWorld. However, "unless you're willing to limit the functionality of the device and/or its services, there will always be some threats."

Imagination, Apple graphics tech supplier, talks future

2014-03-03T06:00:00.001+05:30

John Metcalfe, executive vice president and COO at Imagination Technologies, graphics chip supplier to Apple, chatted with CNET for a few minutes about the future.
Imagination's graphics chip technology -- which must manage, among other things, the millions of pixels on the display -- has been used consistently by Apple in its mobile products, and Imagination's technology appears prominently in the iPad Air, iPad Mini Retina, and iPhone 5S.
I asked Metcalfe in a recent interview about the future of its graphics chips and, by extension, technologies that could appear in future Apple products -- though the latter is obviously only a decision that Apple can ultimately make.

Tim Cook: Apple TV did over $1B in 2013 revenue

2014-03-02T06:00:00.001+05:30

While the iPhone and iPad have come to dominate Apple's business, the television has often been relegated to an afterthought for the company. So much for Apple TV being just a hobby, said Chief Executive Tim Cook.
"That hobby was over a billion dollars of revenue last year," Cook said during the company's annual meeting with shareholders here. "It's a little hard to call it a hobby anymore."
The billion-dollar figure includes content sales conducted by Apple on the platform -- like movies and TV shows -- and not just hardware sales of its set-top box. At Friday's meeting, Cook did not specify the breakdown between the two revenue streams.
Still, the milestone means the product is getting attention from consumers. A little over a year ago, Cook announced that in the first quarter of the 2013 fiscal year, the company sold more than 2 million Apple TVs, up from 1.4 million a year before. (Although it's worth noting that Apple's first quarter includes results from the holiday shopping season.)

Google 'Project Tango' 3D vision smartphone platform announced

2014-02-27T06:00:00.000+05:30

Google announced a new research project Thursday aimed at bringing 3D technology to smartphones, for potential applications such as indoor mapping, gaming and helping blind people navigate.
The California tech giant said its "Project Tango" would provide prototypes of its new smartphone to outside developers to encourage the writing of new applications.

Project leader Johnny Lee said the goal of the project, which incorporates robotics and vision-processing technology, is "to give mobile devices a human-scale understanding of space and motion."

"What if you could capture the dimensions of your home simply by walking around with your phone before you went furniture shopping?" Google said on its Project Tango web page.

Google's Project Tango Struts Into the Spotlight

2014-02-24T06:00:00.000+05:30

Google is making an increased push into the 3D imaging sphere with the announcement of its Project Tango technology.
The project is aimed at helping mobile devices fully map a 3D space to give them the same type of understanding of space and motion that humans have through a blend of robotics and computer vision tools.

"Google has a reputation for finding value in places most other companies pay little attention to or overlook entirely," Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT, told TechNewsWorld.
"While large-scale projects like Google Maps and Earth approach their subjects with a macro view, providing context valuable to the user, you could say that with Project Tango Google is reversing the telescope for a micro view of highly localized locales, including homes, rooms, etc.," he explained.
"The bet the company is making is that garnering insights from enclosed spaces will be particularly valuable for end users," said King.

Samsung's New Galaxy S5 Might Ship Bathtub-Ready

2014-02-23T06:00:00.000+05:30

Of all the Samsung Galaxy S5 rumors to hit this week, the one that had me sit up straight and pay close attention is the rumor that the new Galaxy S5 may be both waterproof and dustproof.
This is a big deal, because it would be the first major flagship smartphone with wide and popular distribution to be waterproof.
Of course, Samsung last year offered the Galaxy S4 Active, which was a variant of its regular Galaxy S4. The Active version had a slightly bigger case and was IP67 certified: It could withstand a 30-minute submersion down to about 3 feet of water.
Unfortunately, you could still void the warranty if the unit actually failed and water seeped inside, killing your Galaxy S4 Active and leaving you high and dry with no recourse other than shelling out for a new phone.
In fact, there were some reports of Galaxy S4 Active units failing under normal, expected underwater use, which surely didn't help launch sales to true outdoor enthusiasts.

Google Barge, which has been sitting unfinished and idle alongside a pier in the middle of San Francisco Bay, will soon be on the move.
CNET has learned that the barge project, expected to be a floating product and Google X concept showroom, will be relocated in a month or less from its current home alongside Treasure Island. Earlier this month, a California state agency said Google either had to move the project somewhere else or get a permit to finish construction at Treasure Island's Pier One.
