Nikon announced two new products today - the Media Port UP300 and UP300x video headset. This is a rather awkward direction for Nikon and I am not sure of the intended target audience, but those gadgets look pretty impressive. It is interesting to see the word "video" in another Nikon product, not to mention the "x" in the model number.

Its 2008 and Photokina 2008 is on.

Nikon and Canon were battling for megapixels in the APS-C and Full Frame sensors in the run up to Photokina and camera watchers were raving about the 5D MkII's 21.1 MP and HD Video capability and Nikon being the first to launch an DSLR with video capabilities.

Then on the 1st Day of Photokina 2008, Leica changed the rules of the game. It launched the Leica S2. A new format - 30 x 45 mm with a whopping resolution of 37.5 megapixels.

Leica has surprised the industry by creating a totally new standard. Leica have housed a larger, custom 37.5-megapixel, 30 x 45mm sensor (approximately 56% larger than a full frame sensor) into in a body that's no larger than a conventional SLR - a medium format in a 35mm sized camera. It is expected to redefine the future of SLR and medium format photography.

The S-system will utilize an advanced new dual shutter, with both an in-body focal plane shutter for fast lenses, and in-lens leaf shutters for high flash sync speeds. The first camera, the S-2, will feature a 37.5 megapixel CCD sensor in a weatherproof body which is similar in size and handling to conventional 35mm-type DSLRs. The new ‘Maestro’ image processing system provides twice the operating speed of current medium-format backs, significantly reduced power consumption, and allows production of in-camera JPEGs. The company has also developed a range of nine new lenses, including macro, ultra-wideangle, and tilt-and-shift designs.

Canon G10

Canon's PowerShot range has a new flagship - the G10. It is the much anticipated successor to the G9. Key changes include a new 14.7 megapixel CCD sensor and a new 28-140mm wide zoom, increased screen resolution - plus a DIGIC IV processor.

A new top panel layout adds a dedicated AE compensation dial and there's an improved grip, but overall externally the changes are subtle.

The G10 will also enter the arena at a $499 retail price.

New CMOS sensor

The EOS 5D Mark II newly designed full frame 21.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor features ISO sensitivity from 100-6400, expandable to 50, 12,800 and 25,600. Large 6.4µm2 pixels have been redesigned to capture more light and yield a better signal to noise ratio to ensure lower noise images throughout the ISO range. The full frame sensor has the same dimensions as a frame of 35mm film. This means that wide-angle lenses stay wide, without the change in angle of view associated with smaller sensor cameras. As well as benefiting from finer control over depth of field, photographers moving up to the EOS 5D Mark II full frame format will find the newly designed wide, bright 98% coverage viewfinder a joy to work with.

New DiGiC 4 processor

A new DiG!C 4 processor combined with 14-bit analogue to digital conversion provides smooth gradations in mono-tonal areas such as skies, and highly accurate colour rendition. A new 3.0” VGA resolution LCD provides a wide 170º angle-of-view, providing plenty of clarity for accurate focus checks in playback. The screen brightness can automatically adjust to suit viewing conditions, extending battery life in low light and improving viewing in bright conditions. A new dedicated Live View button switches modes to display a real-time image on the LCD. This allows EOS 5D Mark II photographers to enjoy simplified shooting from awkward angles. Precision focus and metering

A 9-point auto focus system is supported by 6 additional invisible Assist AF points, located inside the spot-metering circle to optimise subject tracking performance in AI SERVO AF mode. For accurate exposure readings in tricky lighting conditions, the spot metering circle covers just 3.5% of the frame.

Control

The EOS 5D Mark II redesigned menu system includes a new Quick Control screen, for instant access to the most commonly changed settings. A new Creative Auto mode allows photographers to cede control of key settings to the camera, while retaining control over creative variables such background blur, drive mode and image brightness. Custom user settings allow photographers to switch between two completely different camera setups. This is ideal for changing quickly between two different environments, such as switching from working inside a church without flash to outdoors with fill-flash at a wedding.

Accessories

Leica C-LUX 3

Another new compact from Leica in the run up to Photokina 2008.

The LECIA C-LUX 3, combined with its optional colour co-ordinated cases, just oozes style.

But, as you would expect from Leica, substance has not been forsaken merely for style. Compared to its predecessor there is a wider 25 mm “space grabbing” initial focal length, and a longer zoom up to 125 mm (both 35 mm format). With a very creditable f / 2.8 starting aperture and a 10 mega pixel sensor, this camera can really hold its own.

In addition, Leica Camera AG has developed its own unique colour matching, contrast and picture definition profile which produces digital picture characteristics complimentary to Leica M film photography. On auto, the camera combines many individual functions including O.I.S. image stabilization and improvement face recognition whereby focus and exposure values are automatically adjusted to the faces in the picture. With no preparation, a “grab shot” which was previously technically challenging, can now produce sharp, exposure compensated, images of people’s faces within a scene.

A new Leica compact camera, the D-Lux 4, had turned up in the pages of French print magazine Chasseur d'Images.

Premiering with the camera is the wide range of accessories for additionally widening its photographic potential, offering the sophisticated user even more possibilities for creative photography. With its 1/1.63“ CCD image sensor, unusually large for this class of camera, the LEICA D-LUX 4 produces images of superior quality.

The LEICA D-LUX 4 sports a high-speed LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON 5.1-12.8 mm f/2.0-2.8 ASPH. lens with a focal length range of 24 to 60 mm in 35 mm format. Leica Releases M8.2

No, not a M9 but yes, a M8.2 - an updated version of its M8 digital rangefinder camera. The M8.2 features the same body as the M8, but includes the previously optional upgrades announced at PMA in January 2008. These include a low vibration, extra quiet focal plane shutter with the option to re-cock the shutter at a more convenient moment. The camera body also sports a new vulcanite finish and a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal cover glass for LCD protection.

The black version of the M8.2 can be identified by the black Leica logo dot and hotshoe.

Leica has listened to the complaints of M8 users, too. First is the on/off switch, which previously slipped easily into the last position -- the self timer. Imagine using a camera designed for photojournalists and missing the shot because the switch has slipped and started a ten second countdown. The switch now has much more positive click-stops.

Another complaint was the viewfinder. The M series cameras use "brightline" frames to show the section of the viewfinder which will be captured on film (or memory card). Due to troubles with lens crop factors, these were rather inaccurate in the M8. That, too, has been fixed.

There is a new shutter, too. The metal shutter on the M8 replaced the cloth shutter used in all M series cameras until then. The cloth shutter was the main reason for the M's legendary quiet operation (the other is the lack of a flip-up mirror). The M8.2 still has a metal shutter, but Leica says it has made it quieter.

The LCD screen has an unexpected but welcome addition: a sapphire crystal cover. This shows that Leica is still committed to making cameras which will last for years. The M8.2 is actually an addition to the M8, not a replacement, and M8 owners can upgrade their existing bodies with some of the new features. Leica's hasn't yet said which, although we assume that all of the above-mentioned tweaks will be available. Two additions which are unlikely to be offered as upgrades are the black logo on the black model, a more discrete version of the famous Leica red dot, and a vulcanized "easy grip" finish which goes some way towards mitigating the lack of a finger-grip.

Available from end-September 2008, this version is particularly stylish with a new extra durable high-quality deep black finish, SRP is £3990 (inc VAT).

World's fastest Aspherical Lens from Leica - The new LEICA NOCTILUX-M 50 MM F / 0.95 ASPH

GERMANY - 15 September 2008 – The new LEICA NOCTILUX-M 50 mm f/0.95 ASPH. launched by Leica Camera AG, Solms, represents a milestone in lens design. It is the successor of the famous NOCTILUX-M 50 mm f/1 marketed by Leica for over 30 years, beginning in1975. Due to state-of-the-art optical and mechanical technology, Leica has now been able to make substantial improvements to the predecessor product. It is now possible to “break the optical sound barrier” of a lens speed of 1:1.

The LEICA NOCTILUX-M 50 mm f/0.95 ASPH. offers a unique performance spectrum: A noticeably higher lens speed has been achieved without any major alterations to the size of the lens. The characteristic rendering of the previous 50 mm f/1, valued by many users as a means of creative photography, has been retained with extremely shallow depth of field at full aperture. However, when stopped down, the lens performs comparably with the LEICA SUMMILUX-M 50 mm f/1.4 ASPH. launched in 2004 which was regarded as the best standard lens ever produced. The new LEICA NOCTILUX-M 50 mm f/0.95 ASPH. can be used for a particularly wide range of applications. At full aperture the lens features an extremely shallow depth of field, allowing incomparably esthetic portraits or detail studies, for example. The lens is also useful for available light photography, even surpassing the speed of the human eye. In normal light, it can be unhesitatingly used as a universal lens, and the extremely natural effect of the 50 mm focal length enables a true-to-life rendition of the subject.

The LEICA NOCTILUX-M 50 mm f/0.95 ASPH. integrates eight elements arranged in a double Gauss design symmetrical to the aperture. To ensure high imaging performance, two aspherical lens surfaces are used, which, due to their size and shape, are manufactured in a complex grinding and polishing process at the Solms factory. Five of the glass elements exhibit partial anomalous dispersion, three of them are extremely highly refractive and therefore exceptionally expensive (the price per kilogram of this glass is roughly twice that of silver). An outstanding performance in the close-focus range is also guaranteed by a floating element, the last lens group of which changes its relative position to the rest of the system during focusing. Panasonic DMC G1 - Micro 4/3rd DSLR or an Interchangeable lens camera

Following up on last month's Micro Four Thirds system announcement, Panasonic has launched the world's first compact interchangeable lens camera to employ the technology today, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1.

Utilizing the Micro Four Thirds standard announced last month, the G1 drops the mirror / prism optical viewfinder that has been standard in SLR cameras for over half a century in favor of a newly developed high resolution electronic viewfinder. Squeezed into the diminutive body are a new 12MP Four Thirds Live MOS sensor with SSWF, new processor (Venus Engine HD) and a comprehensive combination of DLSR and compact camera features but no movie mode.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1

Tipping the scales at well under a pound and measuring just a hair more than five inches wide, the G1 is the latest and one of the most promising attempts to date in bringing DSLR image quality to a camera with point-and-shoot compactness. According to Panasonic, with a "lens mounted" form factor roughly the size of the manufacturer's FZ28 ultrazoom, the new Lumix can lay claim to being the "world's smallest and lightest digital interchangeable lens camera."

As a Micro Four Thirds system body, the G1 operates in a full-time live view mode with shot composition on either the camera's LCD or its electronic viewfinder – just like an advanced point-and-shoot. But from a specs perspective, the latest Lumix's sheet reads like what you'd expect from a current consumer DSLR, with a 12.1 megapixel Four Thirds format "Live MOS" CMOS sensor handling imaging duties. Simultaneous four-channel data reading supplies a 60 fps imaging to the camera's display, meaning smoother, more lifelike shot composition whether you're using the LCD or the EVF.

The primary display is a 3.0 inch flip-and-swivel unit with 460,000 dots of resolution and, of course, 100 percent frame coverage.

For an experience more akin to working with a traditional DSLR, the G1 also utilizes an ultra high-res electronic viewfinder, or EVF, the equivalent of a whooping 1.4 million dots of resolution. Unlike in a true DSLR, both displays are electronic: this means that the G1 can be configured to mirror the LCD view through the EVF, to show exposure parameters on the display while allowing for shot composition through the viewfinder, or to show a live preview with differing levels of information on each. However you choose to configure it, a proximity sensor automatically shuts off the LCD panel and switches on the EVF when the viewfinder is raised to eye level.

The G1's lens mount provides compatibility (including AE/AF support) with both the new Micro Four Thirds system lenses – like the ultra-small 14-45mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens that Panasonic is releasing in conjunction with the G1 announcement – as well as full-size Four Thirds lenses from Panasonic, Olympus, Leica, and Sigma using an optional adapter.

A DSLR-style pop-up flash provides additional illumination as needed. The G1 also packs a hot shoe, which can be used in conjunction with a new accessory flash from Panasonic designed especially for the G1 to further expand shot lighting options.

One obvious technological challenged presented by Micro Four Thirds involves finding a means for quick AF performance. Design considerations mean the G1 uses a point-and-shoot style contrast detection AF system, rather than the generally quicker and more accurate phase detection systems from DSLRs.

In order to provide a DSLR-like AF experience, Panasonic has developed a new imaging engine, Venus Engine HD, utilizing a pair of processors. This arrangement gives the G1 an advanced 23-area auto focus system that also supports user-selectable single-area AF, continuous focus tracking, and face detection for up to 15 faces. In short the new camera's AF performance should be somewhere on the border between the best compact cameras and consumer-grade DSLRs.

Likewise, Panasonic's shooting speed claims rival those made by entry-level DSLRs, with the G1 dashing off JPEGs and raw images at an advertised 3 fps.

Because of its full-time live view operation, the G1 is also able to draw on many of the user-friendly "Intelligent" technologies developed for Panasonic's Lumix point-and-shoots. Most notably, the G1 is equipped with Panasonic's iA Intelligent Auto mode. According to the manufacturer, iA offers an integration of several key technologies – including Intelligent ISO, Intelligent Exposure, automatic scene selection, AF tracking, and face detection – designed to improve the auto-exposure shooting experience.

Like much of the rest of the camera, the G1's control arrangement and physical interface is a compromise, drawing on both compact-camera and SLR influences. A front-side control wheel with press-to-select functionality suggests the G1's DSLR roots, though much of the rest of the interface, including the rotating LCD and numerous dedicated controls, can be credited to Panasonic's long-running FZ50 ultrazoom.

Style-conscious users should also take note: the G1 is also unique among current interchangeable lens cameras insofar as it's available in blue and red variants, in addition to the expected black finish.

Panasonic's own market research has suggested that only about a third of those who intend to purchase a DSLR actually do so. Explanations for this gap? The size, weight, and general intimidation factor of SLR cameras are the most cited reasons for not making a DSLR purchase, according to Panasonic. Traditionally, ultrazooms or advanced compacts have existed to ease this transition, serving as a connecting link between the point-and-shoot and DSLR markets. With on-LCD shot composition and a combination of SLR and point-and-shoot features and exposure control options, the G1 also fills this "bridge camera" niche, however – and does so in a format that allows for many of the conveniences of an SLR (interchangeable lenses and excellent image quality) in a smaller, lighter, and easier to manage package.

Panasonic has slated the G1 for retail availability in November.

Sony 70-400mm and Carl Zeiss 16-35mm Lenses

Alongside the A900 announcement, Sony has introduced two new high-end lenses to augment its full-frame lens range - the 70-400mm f/4-5.6 and Carl Zeiss 16-35mm f/2.8.

The new 70-400mm f/4-5.6 is a 5.7x super telephoto zoom lens ideally suited for sports, action and wildlife photography.

The Vario Sonnar T* 16-35mm f/2.8 ZA Carl Zeiss Series is a super wide angle 16-35mm f/2.8 constant aperture zoom lens suited for landscape, snapshot and indoor photography. For both lenses, when attached to the Alpha 900 camera body, the AF hold buttons can be customized to activate the camera’s intelligent preview function.

Sony India - Competitive Pricing for DSLRs

In a surprising but a welcome move, Sony India has reduced prices of its DSLR camera models in line with the global price movements. This is the first time that a camera manufacturer has taken the initiative to make in roads into the Indian market.

The Indian market - even a couple of years ago - paid the marked up price (being the US$ list price + 20-30%), equated to INR. So, even when Nikon D40s are selling for under $450 retail in the US, an Indian consumer is being charged 29,990 INR (~ $700 US). Canon also did the same with the obsolete EOS 350D, which was finally offered at 28000 INR, when the 400D was launched and selling well.

The Sony DSLR-A200K with the SAL 1870 (18-70mm) lens is being offered at an MRP of INR. 24,990. The street prices would be a bit lower. This is a proper DSLR - available with warranty - for under 25K, and would be an ideal stepping up model from the digital compacts.

The Sony Alpha 200/DSLR-A200 is a worthy competitor in the entry-level market, offering awesome image quality, robust performance, great ergonomics and loads of useful exposure options. One feature that stands out is the Super SteadyShot option. While many manufactures (Panasonic, Canon, etc.) are starting to offer stabilized lenses with these dSLR kits, the A200 features an effective anti-shake system that works not matter what type of glass you are using. This means many of the other models in this class with require you to purchase more expensive image stabilized lenses to achieve the same level of low light shooting performance.

August 2008 has seen a flurry of launches from Canon.

Three new PowerShots are a part of the pre-Photokina camera line-up from Canon. All three deliver a 10 megapixel sensor and two replace the PowerShot A580 and PowerShot A720 IS, while the PowerShot E1 is dubbed as being 'designed by women for women'.

The new Canon PowerShot A1000 IS features a 4x optical zoom lens with Image Stabiliser, 2.5” LCD screen, optical viewfinder and is available in blue brown or silver. The Canon PowerShot A2000 IS features a 6x optical zoom with Image Stabilisation, 3” LCD (but no optical viewfinder) and is only available in gunmetal and silver, while the PowerShot E1 has a similar lens and electronic and optical viewfinder specifications to the A1000 IS, but is available in fetching shades of white, pink or blue.

Canon 50D

There has been a flurry of new launches from the bigwigs of the camera world in the run up to Photokina 2008.

One of the major ones to make the headlines this week is the Canon 50D.

Essentially an upgrade of the 40D, this DSLR is expected to hit the high street in early October with a body-only price of $1,399. Canon insists it doesn’t replace the 40D (which now drops to $1,099 street) and the 40D remains in the chain as the base model in the mid-segment. But, with the a new 15.1-megapixel APS-C format CMOS sensor, the 50D has enough new imaging firepower to trim the 40D’s long-term prospects.

If you shoot RAW, there are new settings that opens the choice from a large, medium, or small RAW file and you can still set any of these for simultaeous RAW+JPEG capture and you can also correct in camera - stuff like vignetting etc.

Canon has produces a pro-caliber camera, but has not forgotten the amateurs (who make the larger number of buyers) with face detection, creative auto mode and live view.

The 50D will be packaged with a 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 EF IS lens that boosts the base price by just $200.

Ricoh R10

FE-370 and FE-360 from Olympus

Olympus has announced the addition of two new models - the FE-370 and the FE-360 to its current range of FE series digital compacts. Both the 8.0MP cameras have all the basic features you would expect such as Face Detection, Image Stabilization, a number of shooting modes, video capture etc.

The FE-370 has a slightly larger LCD size of 2.7” compared to the FE-360’s 2.5”. The former also has a larger optical zoom of 5x (36-180mm equiv) compared to FE-360’s 3x optical zoom (36-108mm equiv).
