Date & Time Stamp with firewire video capture

To capture video in high quality, firewire video capture (DV link, IEEE1394) is used to transfer video in full DV mode to the PC. When we shoot video with a camcorder, the date & time code plus other video data are recorded to the camcorder media.

Many of us experience the time & date code is not displayed or superimposed in the video when using firewire video capture (DV transfer) despite the time & date code is already embedded in the video (output as DV avi file). The date & time information, which is accessible by the capturing software, is only used internally by the software to split video or for other stuff. When we playback video from the camcorder in TV using analog connection (S-video, AV jack) or when we transfer video to VHS recorder, the date & time data will be transferred along with the video stream and will appear on TV.

Usually we like to include date & time stamp in our home video for future reference. We want to remember all our important moments in life and associate them with date & time.

Here are a few options you may want to consider to mark your home video with date & time with firewire video capture.

1) Insert date & time In DVD titles during authoring - We can write the date & time information on the chapter titles and track titles during DVD authoring instead of stamping in the movie.

2) Capture video via analog connection (analog video capture card) - video quality will drop for this option. If video quality is not important or if you have the intention of making SVCD or VCD instead of DVD, you may probably consider to use analog connection (via S-video or AV out jack), but you must have an analog capture card installed in you computer. The camcorder must be configured to display the time & date during playback.

1) You may have too many old files in your computers accumulated over a long period of time. Clearing off these junk files or temporary files will help to boost up speed of your computer.
- Go to My Computer, right-click on drive C and click Properties. In the General tab, click on Disk Cleanup and then Ok button. You will be able to remove temporary Internet files, empty Recycle Bin and remove Windows temporary files.
- Open Window Explorer, under Drive C go to Windows or WINNT folder. Clear all files in Prefetch folder.

2) You data in your computer may be fragmented or broken into pieces. This will make the data or files harder to be retrieved or saved. You can run disk defragmentation to speed up the access of data. Go to Accessories via Start, then select system folder and look for File Defragmenter.

3) You should check the integrity of the files stored in your hard disk. You can detect and repair disk errors using the window Error Checking utility. When you use your hard drive, it develops bad sectors which will slow down the hard disk performance. Bad sectors make data writing difficult.
- Go to My computer, right-click drive C and then click Properties. In the Tools tab, click Check Now button. Tick all the dialog box and then click Start.

If yes, the question you should ask is whether it’s just sometimes or always running so slow. Do you also experience that your computer is slow in starting up? Sometimes the start up process may take up to several minutes.

Today, many computers suppose to run faster than they are. To have a computer running at its original speed, scheduler maintenance must be carried out. Below are some useful tips you can use to tune up your computer.

Part I: The Computer is always running too slow / The computer is always slow in starting up

1) The Window OS default settings are usually not optimized for every computers or users with specific application. Window OS is configured for a general-purpose computer system. You can tweak and optimize its settings according to your personal application and your computer hardware configuration to get the best out of it.

Turning off unnecessary desktop features will speed up your computer. Here are a few actions you can take:
- Go to Desktop, right-click and select Properties. In the Settings tab, change the color quality from 32bits to 16bits.

2) Inadequate RAM memory in your computer system will slow down the programs execution. All active programs or processes use RAM memory to run. RAM memory is the working space of the computer, the more the better and the faster. When a program is terminated, the open data will still remain in the RAM memory until the computer is shut down. The working space of the computer will get smaller. There is software you can use to constantly monitor and recover RAM memory space by emptying old open data.

3) An old computer, with old hardware or inadequate processor speed, uses the latest software will run slower compare to the latest computer. You may want to consider upgrading the CPU or the other hardware.

4) You may have too many unnecessary programs running in the background. These programs are launched automatically each time when you boot up your computer. When you install new software, new items are added in to the automatic start-up list. You indeed do not need to launch these programs during boot up until you really need to use them. All these pre-launched programs running at the background will occupy computer resources such as RAM memory, CPU resource and will slow down your computer.

Here’s how to disable items in the automatic start-up list.
- Go to Start, in the Run dialogue box, type in MSCONFIG and hit Return. In the pop-up window select Startup and uncheck programs which you do not want them to be pre-launched during boot-up. This will resolve computer slow in starting up issue, and your computer will run faster on the next boot up. The above procedures may not switch off all the unnecessary programs at boot-up.
