On May 22, thousands of supporters of America’s most powerful pro-Israel lobbying group, the America-Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC, converged on Washington for the group’s annual conference. For two days they watched Democratic and Republican congressional leaders pledge their undivided loyalty to the state of Israel, and by extension, to AIPAC’s legislative agenda. Speeches by President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu highlighted the conference, with Obama attempting to clarify his statement demanding that 1967 borders be the “starting point” for negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
I interviewed several AIPAC delegates in the streets outside the conference. While few, if any, of them were able to demonstrate the slightest degree of sophistication in their understanding of the Israel-Palestine crisis, they had been briefed inside on how to respond to critics. No one I spoke to would concede that Israel occupied any part of Palestinian territory; none would concede that Israel had committed acts of indiscriminate violence or that it had transferred Palestinians by force; one interviewee could not distinguish Palestine from Pakistan. With considerable wealth and negligible knowledge — few had spent much time inside Israel — the delegates were easily melded by the cadre of neoconservative and Israeli “experts” appearing in AIPAC’s briefing sessions.
As the day wore on, many delegates waded into confrontations with members of Code Pink and Palestine solidarity demonstrators who had set up a protest camp across the street. With conflict intensifying on the sidewalk, Code Pink’s Medea Benjamin invited AIPAC delegates to express themselves from the protest stage. There, their most visceral feelings and deeply held views about Israel-Palestine crisis were revealed. See it for yourself.

Campaign group Breaking the Silence has met with a hostile response from Israel, especially after it published testimony by soldiers who took part in the war on Gaza in 2008-9. Photograph: Ali Ali/EPA

Transgressions by the Israeli army in the occupied Palestinian territories will be disclosed by a group of former soldiers in an internet campaign aimed at raising public awareness of military violations.
Video testimonies by around two dozen ex-soldiers – some of whom are identifying themselves for the first time – will be posted on YouTube. The campaign by Breaking the Silence, an organisation of former soldiers committed to speaking out on military practices, launches with English subtitles on Monday.

Some of the former soldiers describe the “neighbour procedure”, a term for the use of Palestinian civilians, often children, as human shields to protect soldiers from suspected booby traps or attacks by militants. The procedure was ruled illegal by Israel‘s high court in 2005.
Others speak of routine harassment of civilians at checkpoints, arbitrary intimidation and collective punishment.
Idan Barir, who served in the artillery corps, describes in his testimony how an officer forced Palestinian civilians to crawl in a “race” towards a checkpoint near Jenin in the West Bank during the 2000 olive harvest. Only the first three out of “teams” of eight were allowed to pass.
Another, Itamar Schwarz, says Palestinian homes were routinely ransacked in search operations. He describes the day of the World Cup final in 2002, when soldiers confined a Palestinian woman and child in the kitchen of their home for two hours while the unit watched the game in the middle of an operation.
Arnon Degani, who served in the Golani brigade, describes the distress of a young woman who tearfully pleaded to be allowed to pass through a Jenin checkpoint in order to sit an important exam. He gradually came to understand, he says, that the Israeli army’s intention was “to enforce tyranny on people who you know are regular civilians” and to “make it clear who’s in control here”.
“Part of the silence of Israeli society is to believe these are isolated and exceptional incidents. But these are the most routine, day-to-day, banal stories,” said Yehuda Shaul of Breaking the Silence.
Identification of the ex-soldiers willing to speak out was important, he said, “so that Israelis understand that there are people behind these stories, that in a sense we’re all involved”.
The former soldiers were aware of the potential legal and social consequences of going public, Shaul added. “They understand that they risk being prosecuted for what they’re saying. But they’re doing it because it needs to be done.”
Since Breaking the Silence was launched in 2004, it has met with a hostile response from Israel’s political and military establishment, partly targeting the anonymity of some witnesses. There have been attempts to discredit supporters and block funding, and its leaders have been subject to interrogation. Censure increased after it published testimony by soldiers who took part in the war on Gaza in 2008-9.
Schwarz, 29, who served in the Nahal infantry brigade between 2000 and 2003, told the Guardian that he had gone public with his testimony “because to me it’s important that Israeli society is exposed to the moral price and moral experience that an Israeli soldier goes through in armed service”.
The events he describes are “things that are really little, but they tell you the big picture of the occupation”.
He said his army experience was “like a scar, I carry it with me. We have to talk about it, to put it out to the world. Only then can a society deal with the moral price”.
The Israeli Defence Forces said: “The allegations made by Breaking the Silence are unfamiliar to us. The organisation has been informed, on numerous occasions, of the option of filing specific complaints including personal testimonies and other evidence through the appropriate channels. This is to ensure that their allegations are subjected to a thorough and proper legal investigation. To date the organisation has refused to provide substantiated allegations, making it impossible to properly examine their claims.”

â€œWe want the Palestinian people to know that even though our government overlooks the humanitarian crimes in Gaza, we, the people, stand beside you,â€ Manuel Espinar, a coordinator of the Freedom Flotilla to Gaza, told Press TV.
The Freedom Flotilla II, named after the first Freedom Flotilla — which Israel attacked in May 2010, leaving 9 activists dead — is bound to set sail to Gaza in June. Like its predecessor, the Freedom Flotilla II will attempt to break the illegal blockade on the Gaza strip.
According to diplomatic sources, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has recently telephoned Spanish Prime Minister, JosÃ© Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, to urge the Spanish government to stop its citizens from participating in the Freedom Flotilla II.
On Wednesday, the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement saying that, “The government strongly advises against any vesselâ€¦ to travel to Gaza as it cannot guarantee the safety of its participants.”
â€œIsrael has not been penalized economically or politically by the international community for ignoring its international obligations and not allowing Palestinian refugees to return to their homelands. Therefore, it is up to us to demand a just solution to the humanitarian crimes against Gaza,â€ Adnan Sulayman, a Palestinian Association Activist, told Press TV.
People took to the streets across the world to mark the anniversary of the 1948 occupation of Palestine by Israeli forces.
Israeli forces expelled more than 700,000 Palestinians out of their homeland to the West Bank and Gaza Strip and other countries in the world.

Ethnic Cleansing Video of 2011 Released by Americans

Below is a small piece of a video released by the American activists from CPT which shows the zionists perpetrating the crime of ethnic cleansing, as a part of their genocide of Palestinians, under the coordination of the “civil administration”.
Fatmi Mahmoud Jaboor, the woman who you will see in the video falling to the floor after she breathed the poison gas of the IOF, died some hours after this video was taken. She had been brought to a hospital for medical attention.

This is what they call “humanitarian activities in the occupied territories”.
The same crimes as seen in the video were repeated several times in different villages, towns and locations, one place after another. Khirbet Bir al Eid, where 454 Palestinians were uprooted from their homes, is located south of Hebron. Khirbet Tana, where all houses were destroyed and all Palestinians were expelled, is in the district of Nablus. Khirbet Mirza is in the district of Tubas – it was also completely destroyed and ethnically cleansed. Village of Ein al- Hilweh, where all houses were destroyed and all Palestinians were expelled. Other villages were also ethnically cleansed and razed.

These crimes were perpetrated not only against innocent civilian villagers, but also against their animals, trees and water wells that all were razed. The images in the video represent the current situation of the Palestinians under the brutal israeli occupation. The act of ethnic cleansing which appears in the video was perpetrated on May 6 2011 at the Palestinian village of “Amniyr” south of Yatta in the southern district of Hebron city. Amniyr is a Bedouin community north of the Susia colony on the southern Hebron hills in the Yatta district. Hebron is the second biggest city in the occupied territories. It is my homeland, from where I was expelled in 2002.

CPT has released a video of the ethnic cleansing of Amniyr, a Palestinian village south of Yatta, carried out by the Israeli military on Friday, May 6. After declaring the area a closed military zone, soldiers and police used tear gas and sound grenades to chase away the families who own the land. The previous day at 5 a.m., the military destroyed six
shacks and uprooted 150 olive trees in Amniyr, demolishing all the structures in the village for the third time in about ten weeks.

On January 19, 2011, the Israeli Occupation Authorities delivered demolition, ethnic cleansing and halt of construction orders. Since then, the village was completely demolished on February 22, then again on March 29, after the Palestinians of Amniyr rebuilt their homes.

On Friday, May 6, the Israeli military declared the area of Amniyr, a Palestinian village south of Yatta, a closed military zone and chased away the families who own the land, after demolishing structures and trees on the land the day before. The demolitions occurred at 5 a.m. on Thursday, May 5, when the military destroyed six shacks and uprooted 150 olive trees in Amniyr. The Palestinians of Amniyr had returned to the land and hung six tarps to create makeshift tents. The Israeli army issued a “closed military zone” order on the area at 9:00 a.m. At 2:00 p.m. seven military jeeps arrived, including police and border police. The commanders showed the order and gave the people one minute to leave.
Using sound bombs and tear gas, the soldiers and police forced off the land all the Palestinians present—about thirty adults, many of them elderly, and ten children—as well as accompanying internationals. One woman, Fatmi Mahmoud Jaboor, passed out due to the bombs and required medical attention. The Palestinian Red Cross evacuated her to the hospital, and she was dismissed in the evening.

At 7 p.m. four military jeeps returned to Amniyr and destroyed the tarps and what had been left standing in the area. This is the third time in ten weeks that the military has destroyed trees, tents, dwellings and other structures on the land of Amniyr, effectively demolishing the entire village and affecting six families. Although Amniyr is Palestinian-owned private property, Israel has declared it “state land” and prohibits the people of Amniyr from building any structures or using the land. A local Palestinian leader has told CPT that he believes Israel is trying to confiscate the land of Amniyr because of its proximity to the Israeli settlement of Susiya.
In the last fifteen years, Palestinians in the area have endured several waves of eviction and land confiscation. Using military orders to establish closed military areas, “security zones” and a “National Park” prohibited to Palestinians, the Occupation Authorities
have thereby restricted the land accessible to Palestinians. The Occupation Authorities have also destroyed cisterns and caves and denied basic services to the Palestinian families still living on their land, while allowing Israeli settlers to build homes and other
facilities on the confiscated land.

I address the videos below to the human rights organization, the international public opinion, and to all lovers of justice in the western countries. After watching the video, I ask you politely for your help. Each sign of interest in this matter could help the victims. I ask you to forward the video to human rights and legal organizations in your country, to write protest letters, to file legal complaints if this possible, to organizing Peace activities such as demos, sit-ins, at israeli embassies, to protest against the injustice which you will see in the video. The crime took place at “Amniyr” village south of Hebron in the occupied territories. The victims were women, elderly and children. All are innocent civilians and simple residents who ONLY want to survive in peace on their own lands and be able to provide food to their children.

Your efforts, your support for the victims of israel and your rejection of ethnic cleansing is highly respected and appreciated, NOT ONLY by the victims but by all Palestinians and everybody else who seeks justice. Your personal effort and voice are very important to prevent further crimes by the zionist jews. The victims only ask for your word, your intervention before your own government, the public opinion, and the silenced international media which is owned by the zionists and their allies.

Please submit the videos, together with your complaint or protest letter to the ICC in The Hague, legal organization and prosecutors specialized in international humanitarian law, to your representatives in governments and parliaments, to the European Union and Parliament, to US senators and US courts of justice, etc. It is important to direct your complaint against the individuals who are seen perpetrating the crimes in the video, the commanders and the officers above them, those who issued the orders to perpetrate the crimes and their spokespersons who justify these crimes before the local and international media and public opinion. If the laws of your country support filing criminal complaints against the israeli ambassador in your country, who earns their salary representing and justifying all these criminals, please do also include them in your complaint, or do whatever is possible to you.

If you write to the ICC in The Hague, please enter your complaint as a “Communication to the Prosecutor under Article 15”. The ICC is normally reluctant to accept jurisdiction over the crimes of israel. Even if Israel or the PA would prosecute the crimes shown, the judicial procedure and sentences imposed upon the perpetrators would only have the purpose of protecting them from further prosecution, what has happened in many cases of atrocities and crimes of jews against Palestinians which have been able to attract the attention of the israeli courts. The gist of the situation is that the israeli judicial system protects and encourages genocide, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity rather than punishing these crimes according to even its own laws.

Israel, the occupying power, is a criminal organization which represents itself as a state in order to receive the privileges and courtesies which states, or “subjects of international law”, extend to each other under the “Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties of 1969”, as amended. The “State of Israel” demonstrably does not have the capacity to be a subject of international law and its representatives have signed many bi- and multilateral agreements and protocols with the clear purpose of defrauding its co-signatories.

A further proof that israel cannot be considered a “subject of international law” is that the israeli record shows constant “fraudulent conduct” per Article 49 of the “Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties of 1969”, especially regarding its accession to the UN, its signature of the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and all other treaties of international humanitarian law, including those from which the “Rome Statute of the ICC” derives.

All representatives of Israel since 1948 have shown in word and fact that they consider themselves above and beyond any codes of conduct whatsoever. With such a policy as the fundament of their society Israel has become a refuge of grave criminals against humanity and an operating base of international organized crime and terrorism. This all firmly suggests the ICC must regard Israel as “hostis humani generis” (enemy of mankind) rather than splitting hairs about quaint issues of jurisdiction. Interview with Paul Larudee, co-founder of the Free-Palestine Movement, from Berkeley

UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Valerie Amos has condemned Israel's forceful displacement of Palestinians.

Paul Larudee, co-founder of the Free-Palestine Movement, discusses the issue in an interview with Press TV.

Press TV: We have the statement that's come from Valerie Amos but there's nothing new about this. We're looking at years and years, and in turn, daily systematic excursions in the occupied territories in which the world doesn't take notice when that occurs. What do you make of what Valerie Amos has said being the UN humanitarian chief?

Larudee: It's about time because it's started 150 years ago when Zionist settlers bought land in Palestine and did something that people who bought and exchanged land in Palestine for hundreds or even thousands of years never did. They displaced the people who were on the land, who were working the land, and that was the beginning of what we see today.

This has been the policy of Israel; it is the policy of displacing the indigenous population and replacing it with their own population. If one thing doesn't work they'll try something else.

They've made life extremely difficult for Palestinians on the theory that if it's difficult enough they'll leave. It's worked a little but not much. The Palestinians are pretty attached to their land and they're going to stay.

Press TV: One thing that's interesting is the extensive coverage that we have given to the Palestinian cause, and this began with the unity deal between the Palestinian faction of Hamas and Fatah, and that news is setting its agenda in somewhat a positive note regarding Hamas. Of course, that comes to the dismay of Israel.

We also see the movements in the Arab world and in particular what happened in Egypt. Do you think that the time has come that perhaps we may see a change, slowly but gradually, towards some Palestinian causes being resolved?

Larudee: It's ultimately going to be resolved in one way or the other. And it's because of the actions of the Palestinian people and of the people of the world who are going to force their own governments to do what's right in this case.

People are getting fed up with the way this has lasted for such a long time. And people who were willing to live with it in the past are no longer willing to live with it.

I think, perhaps, the governments of the West and the United States are saying we crushed the Hamas election before and we caused problems before but what are the consequences of that? Maybe the consequences of living with Hamas are not as bad as the consequences of trying to destroy Hamas?

This is an equation that is being discussed in various circles. Israel won't like it but at some point the United States really does have to defend its interests and not necessarily Israel's.

Press TV: The United States tried to defend its interests but let's look at what happened.

We've had that Middle East peace envoy, George Mitchell, who recently announced his resignation. What was he good at regarding the so-called mediation efforts? It just seems that it bought time and put on a face, and some say a process of negotiation-to-negotiate, and it was basically all he did.

Larudee: That's precisely it. The peace process is a goal in itself. It is a way of trying to defuse the fact that Israel is making progress on the ground in its ethnic cleansing campaign.

I think that neither the public worldwide nor the press is going to buy that. They have to find something else.

George Mitchell is either fed up with the peace process that leads nowhere or his handlers in Washington are.

Press TV: If you could answer this for us quickly; do you think that once the United States is going to put themselves in the driver's seat behind being a mediator, how is it going to pan out when we have, at this point, just a military council ruling Egypt and we know how much of a factor Egypt was in this peace process with Israel?

Larudee: I cannot be optimistic that the United States will be a force for progress. On the contrary, they will allow progress to go only as far as they feel they have to and then they're going to try to limit it as much as possible.

But, perhaps, the United States is not as much in the driver's seat as it has been in the past. Perhaps the people of the region are beginning to take the wheel.

17 year old killed during Nakba demonstrations in East Jerusalem

A 17 year old Palestinian from Silwan has died this morning from wounds sustained during clashes in the East Jerusalem neighbourhood yesterday afternoon. Milad Said Ayyash, a resident of the Ras el-Amud neighborhood in East Jerusalem was shot in the abdomen with live ammunition as Border Police officers and settlers clashed with local youth. He was evacuated to the Muqassed hospital with no pulse and in critical condition, where he underwent surgery in a failed attempt to save his life.

Israel is claiming that the minor was shot by Israeli security forces but eyewitness and activists on the ground are claiming that he was shot by private settler security guards around the large settlement, Beit Yonatan, in the heart of Silwan. According to the Popular Struggle Coordination Committee, the bullet extracted from Ayyash’s abdomen has been found to belong to a handgun. This type of bullet is scarcely used by the Israeli police in crowd control situations. The bullet therefore indicates the likelihood that the youth was shot by one of the settlers’ security guards.

Israel’s heavy handed response to demonstrations was not limited to East Jerusalem yesterday. In Nabi Saleh, one Israeli suffered a broken arm after border police officers fired a tear gas canister directly at him from a distance of 5 meters. The activist was forced to hike two kilometres in order to reach a car that would take him to hospital because the ranking commander in Nabi Saleh would not allow anyone to pick him from the outskirts of the village. An American activist was also hit directly in the head with a tear gas canister from a distance of 15 meters resulting in sustained but stable head injury. Injuries were reported in Qlandiya, al Ma’asara, Bil’in and Nablus in Nakba related clashes with the Israeli military.

In the current climate of revolution against tyranny in the Middle East, Israel has chosen violence to handle popular unarmed demonstration. Israeli military planners understand that there is likely one outcome of killing minors involved in demonstrations in East Jerusalem; continued and strengthening clashes. By killing a minor in East Jerusalem, Israel is sending a message to Palestinians (and to the international community) that it is interested and willing to fight. In a sea of emerging democracies, Israel is behaving like a tyrant using harsh military force against a movement of people’s unarmed resistance to occupation and control. Demonstrations are planned throughout the West Bank tomorrow and Palestinians in Silwan will hold a demonstration after the funeral of Milad Ayyash this afternoon. The likely outcome is violence.

In the following video from Nabi Saleh yesterday, you can see the Israeli army attacking unarmed woman and the shooting of the Israeli peace activist. What you are watching are crimes which will most likely go unpunished.

Israel is asking that the body of the minor killed yesterday be turned over for an autopsy which the family is unwilling to do. This tactic will buy valuable time in taking responsibility for the killing ahead of Sunday’s planned Nakba commemorations throughout the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Just received the following email about my Associate, Mazin Qumsiyeh

This is a quick note that Israeli soldiers arrested Mazin along with two
other Palestinians early this afternoon local time May 15, 2011 as he was
participating in a peaceful nonviolent civil disobedient march toward the
Green Line in Al Walaja (one of the many Nakba events taken place today.)
Many media were there and his arrest was caught on tapes as he was just at
the scene peacefully.   He is currently being held at the Israeli military
compound near Rachel’s Tomb.   As this message is being written, I got a
call from a friend who was still in Al-Walaja reporting that IDF is firing
tear gas at the remaining protest crowd. Some protesters escape to village
houses, but IDF soldiers followed into one house and arrested five more
people (one Irish, one other international, and three Palestinians) from
inside the house.

Elsewhere in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, Gaza, and Golan Heights, there
were reports that dozens were wounded in many places, including more than
150 wounded at Qalandia checkpoint. Please complain to your government and
demand them to stop supporting the brutal Israeli Apartheid regime. Please
support and participate the Nakba events around the world today and double
the effort of BDS on Apartheid Israel.

Interview with Sarah Akl, Political activist, Cairo

Thousands of Egyptian activists poured into the streets of Cairo and other major cities to show their solidarity with the Palestinian people.

The Cairo rally — named a million-man march — coincides with the anniversary of Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories in 1948.

The Muslim Brotherhood, The Youth Revolution Coalition and the National Association for Change, have been leading the call. They urged people to rally in a show of national unity and support for the Palestinian cause.

What follows is the transcript of Press TV’s interview with Sarah Akl who is a political activist in Cairo.

Press TV: Sarah, we know that activists from all over the political spectrum have been calling for this protest and national unity. What can you tell us about that?

Sarah Akl: Well, I believe groups of people are uniting today for several causes. For the start, there is the cause of the unity between Muslims and Christians and unity and march against sectarianism and how we all want sectarianism to be part of our country.

We do not want to be a difference between the Egyptian workers and businessmen. It is another call for unity between the Arab world, between the Egyptian people and supporting the Palestinian uprising. A lot of people have been calling for this march for Palestine on the 15th of May.

Today, as you see in Tahrir square, there are a lot of Palestinian flags and I believe they even surpass the Egyptian flags today. There was this Arab united flags together showing support for all Arab countries and all the uprisings and revolutions in all Arab countries like Yemen, Syria, and Bahrain and so on. So I believe today is a very good call for unity among the people of Egypt, among the people of the Arab world, among the people of the revolution and the Egyptian army.

Press TV: How do you see the criticizing of the current interim government and the people, as you heard they were denouncing Yahya al-Gamal who is the Deputy Prime Minister? How do you see this?

Sarah Akl: Well, I believe there is a bit of confusion or a bit of different opinions between people regarding the new government. Some people are supporting the new government’s regulations or the way they handle things right now.

A lot of people see that it is just another extension to the old regime and Yahya al-Gamal is one of the people that the Egyptian people have a lot of contradicting views about him. Some of them find him very not pro the people or not pro the protests or the revolution and movements. He is somehow representing a lot of what the old regime has been doing to the people. A lot of statements and interviews were not very popular among the people. They do not like how he acts or talks.

Yet we can generalize this for the whole government through the past few weeks or months maybe doctor Essam Sharaf has been doing a lot of efforts to make things a bit easier internally and externally. He is trying so hard to gain much popularity from the people and from the revolution. It seems that he has been pro the revolution since the start. So I do not think that people are against the whole government. They are not actually against them but they are somehow against some people in the government who are not showing full support like they used to at the time of the revolution.

Press TV: How do you see the anti-Israeli stance of the Egyptian people that you can see happening?

Sarah Akl: Well, it has always been there. The Egyptian people have always been against Israel. They have been always supporting the Palestinian cause yet due to the old regime there was no channel that we could channel our support for the Palestinian people.

I recall a couple of years ago there was this march for Palestine. It was very small in number and it did not succeed in even reaching Rafah or anything near that but now the masses are growing, the people’s voices are more heard. The communication between the Arab countries has become more and more effective through the social media and through the revolutions in everywhere. So I believe the call for the support of not only Palestine but the Arab world versus Israel has been growing and growing and I believe it is taking a new shape now.

Press TV: Finally, as a political activist a message that you would like to send to the whole world today on this call for national unity among the Egyptians and among the Palestinians as well.

Sarah Akl: I would like to make it very clear that the people of Egypt have always been united, have always been together against all the hardships that they have been facing and that us as the Arab world have always dreamed of this unity we have. We the people want us back together.

We are for peace. We are for unity. We are for solidarity. We do not want anyone coming in between us either from our government or from our external governments. We just want to be there living in peace together as brothers and sisters and today is a big message for these people to show them that we are there one hand and one unity.

“There will be no return-- time has come to tell Palestinian refugees they will not be returning to the State of Israel,” writes Nahum Barnea, a prominent Israeli ‘liberal’ columnist.
It is becoming clear that Israel lacks the means to cope with Palestinian resilience. Despite Israeli barbarism; despite sixty-three years of oppression, racial discrimination and mass murderous tactics-- including the usage of WMD-- the Palestinian people have remained determined to return to their land.
This week they reminded the Israelis, world Jewry and the rest of the world that the Palestinian cause is not going to fade away. If anything, in 2011, Palestinians seem more decisive, firm and united than their parents’ or grandparents’ generations.

Hence, it is almost amusing to follow the bizarre manner in which Israeli writer Barnea tries to convince himself otherwise, proclaiming “Their politicians told them it would happen. The clerics promised Allah’s help. Foreign sponsors provided flags and buses. They embark on their mission with the confidence that the Zionist project is destined to collapse. Another small push and the entire Land of Israel, from the Jordan to the Sea, will become Palestine.”
Whether Barnea grasps it or not, this is indeed the vision more and more Palestinians have in mind and this is exactly the vision I have in mind. This is the exact vision more and more people around the world envisage as a perfect solution, and clearly, this is the only ethical and universal solution to this bitter conflict: Israel will be Palestine. It will stretch from the river to the sea. And it will be a State of all its citizens as opposed to the racially exclusivist ‘Jews only’ State.
“I have news for you, my dear cousins*,” says Barnea in a condescending manner. “It won’t be happening – not in your lifetime…. Sixty-three years have passed since that war; the time has come to embrace other dreams.”
It doesn’t take a genius to gather that Barnea, like many other Israelis, expresses wishful thinking here rather than a reading of the reality on the ground. As it happens - and more than a few of us detected it decades ago - Palestinians are at the forefront of a battle for a better world. The current regional Arab revolution is a mass call for justice, but also for justice in Palestine. As much as the world looks with admiration at young Muslims and Arabs making a change, it also becomes general knowledge that Israel is the biggest threat to world peace. The Palestinian Right of Return is about to become an international priority issue, and Israel will be defeated on that front. The West wouldn’t hesitate to sacrifice Israel on that issue: isolated and humiliated, Israel is going to struggle hopelessly against the entire region. And to clarify the matter, time is not exactly on the side of the Jewish State.
Israel has had sixty-three years to confront its original sin. It had a window of opportunity to repent, and open its border to the millions of refugees it so brutally expelled. But now the window seems to have been closed. Israel has lost the chance to save itself from itself. And what we saw this week was just an introduction. Israel is about to face a tidal wave of Palestinian gatherings on its borders. Israel doesn’t possess the political or military means to deal with these emerging forms of non-violent resistance.
Barnea like many other Israelis loves Abbas: according to the Israeli columnist Abbas is “the most humane, lovely politician in the three governments currently serving in the Land of Israel.” However, Barnea is disappointed to find out that even Abbas “gets carried away” when he declared on the eve of Nakba Day that no Palestinian leader will renounce the right of return: “the return is not a slogan…Palestine is ours.”
Barnea stresses that Abbas refrained from clarifying the question of how, and where this right will be realised, and whether it will be through compensation or physical return. Barnea concludes that “anyone could make what he wanted” out of Abass’ words.” But in fact Barnea is wrong again. Abbas' words were totally clear: there was no hidden message or even ambiguity in them. The return is not a slogan. For a while it was a universal and an ethical call. But as things stand this week, it is now becoming a call for a direct action. Barnea and most Israelis may still fail to grasp that today’s Middle East is a new entity all together. It is united; it is firm, and it is far from timid. It is vibrant, and revolutionary, and fuelled by yearning for justice and freedom. Israel is surrounded by a wall of fierce resistance. As far as the Jewish State is concerned, the countdown has begun.
Barnea ends his diatribe by telling his fellow Israelis that “those who wish to live in the sovereign, Zionist and democratic State of Israel have no other option but to keep telling the Palestinians: with all due respect, what’s in the past is in the past.”
Yet, a universal reading of Barnea’s suggestion surely also logically implies that the rest of us then, can also now relieve ourselves of the endless burden of Jewish exceptional suffering too: after all, Barnea did say, ‘what’s in the past is in the past.’ Accordingly then, if the Jews are not unique in their collective pain, nothing should stop the Israelis from opening a new page too, so they can cross the divide and build bridges with the indigenous people of the land; those whom they themselves ethnically cleansed and attempted to destroy. For if the burden of the past can, as Barnea suggests, lose its relevance or significance, Israel might as well live up to that, and turn its face to a brighter future and voluntarily invite the Palestinian refugees to return to their land. Such a move would mean an immediate end to the conflict.
But, needless to say, I do not hold my breath.
Yet, there is one crucial (currently hypothetical) question I must address: nowadays, when it becomes clear that the Jewish state approaches its final phase, how would Israelis who would like to return to Europe react to a Barnea-like ‘no return’ statement if it were expressed by a European ‘liberal’ columnist? How would Israelis or the rest of us react to the following: ‘there will be no return-time has come to tell the Jews they will not be returning to Europe’?
Such a statement would clearly provoke outrage amongst many of us.
Yet sadly enough, we are all too used to hear similar statements from ‘liberal’ Israelis and Jews.
*Cousins- a derogatory manner in which Israelis refers to Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims. I vow to explore this term and its origin in one of my next papers.
