Death toll in Thai-Cambodia clashes rises to 16 as 120,000 flee border area

Escalation of military exchanges could move towards ‘state of war’, Acting Thai PM Phumtham Wechayachai says.

The death toll from clashes between Thai and Cambodian troops has risen to 15 in Thailand and one in Cambodia, according to authorities, as more than 120,000 people living along both sides of the border separating the two countries flee the ongoing fighting.

Deadly fighting continued for a second day on Friday as both countries traded heavy artillery and rocket fire, the bloodiest military confrontation between the two Southeast Asian neighbours in more than a decade.

The ongoing clashes have taken place in 12 locations along the disputed border, up from six the day before, a Thai military official said on Friday, indicating a widening of the fighting. Rear Admiral Surasant Kongsiri, a military spokesperson, told a news conference that Cambodia had continued to use heavy weapons.

“Thai forces have responded with appropriate supporting fire in accordance with the tactical situation,” the Thai military said in an earlier statement.

Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health reported that at least 14 civilians and one soldier were killed in Thailand when fighting broke out on Thursday, and a local provincial official in Cambodia’s Oddar Meanchey border province told the Reuters news agency that one person was killed and five wounded in Thai attacks.

More than 30 Thai civilians and 15 soldiers were also injured, according to Thailand’s Health Ministry, while some 100,672 people from four Thai provinces bordering Cambodia have been moved to shelters, Thailand’s Ministry of Interior was quoted by AFP news agency as saying.Arsit Sampantharat, the Thai Interior Ministry’s permanent secretary, was quoted by the country’s Channel 3 television channel as saying more than half of those evacuated were from Surin province, while the rest were from the provinces of Sisaket, Buriram and Ubon Ratchathani.

Quoting officials in Cambodia’s Preah Vihear province, the Khmer Times news organisation said about 20,000 residents have evacuated from the country’s northern border with Thailand.

Thailand has opened more than 300 evacuation centres, according to officials.

Reporting from Surin province, near the Cambodian border, Al Jazeera’s Tony Cheng said the government described the frontier as “very long and porous”, complicating efforts to track the movement of displaced people. “It is very hard to see how many people are here in the evacuation centre… because there are people arriving all the time,” he said.

Almost every upcoming phone has plans to incorporate machine learning and large language models in some form or another, and the first to do so are already on sale. But what are the best AI phones – and the features they bring actually worth having?

I’ve used a bunch of phones with AI on board, and a handful more that offload their AI processing to the cloud. The best AI smartphones have a mix of both. You’ll even find AI cameras and AI image editing on certain flagships. Some use cases are genuinely impressive, and will appeal to most phone owners; others are a lot more niche, and will only be useful to a small minority. These are the models that stand out so far.

The corners might be a little rounder and the sides a little flatter, but otherwise the Galaxy S25 Ultra is very similar to last year’s effort. A faster chipset with better cooling, uprated ultrawide camera and tougher, less reflective display glass are the only improvements of note. But given the S24 Ultra was such a fantastic all-rounder, marginal gains are still enough to make this new phone rather desirable indeed.
A Snapdragon 8 Elite For Galaxy CPU provides the performance muscle, with Samsung-specific tweaks that give it the edge over rival flagships. 12GB of RAM and a range of capacity options mean there’s a model out there for everyone. The S Pen stylus is a little more basic this time around, but still comes into its own for note-taking and doodling.
The 200MP main snapper continues to trade blows with the best of ’em, and though the two telephotos aren’t quite class-leaders, they can still bag a pleasant pic. The 50MP ultrawide is a welcome improvement, and adds macro close-up abilities to boot. Samsung hasn’t boosted the 5000mAh battery between generations, but the more efficient CPU helps it last the day on a single charge.
Galaxy S25 Ultra AI features
Galaxy AI, Samsung’s suite of AI-enhanced software, debuted on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, but felt a bit piecemeal; things are a lot more cohesive this year, with shortcuts and OS-wide tools instead of standalone apps. AI Select lives in a pop-out sidebar and lets you highlight text to activate Writing Assist, or images to generatively edit them.
Writing Assist is an evolution of the Chat assist tool baked into the S24 Ultra’s onscreen keyboard. It can create more professional-sounding copy for work, pepper sentences with hashtags for sharing on social media, or sprinkle in emojis for expressive texting. There are also options to summarise longer stretches of text, translate between languages, and check spelling and grammar on the fly.
You’ll also find a transcription summariser built into the voice recorder, which transcribes conversations on the fly (in multiple languages, to boot) and then creates a succinct synopsis in just a few taps. Real-time voice translation, for both phone calls and in person, also relies on AI to give speedy and accurate interpretation. It supports 13 languages at launch, with more expected to follow later.
Now Brief and the Now Bar are all new for 2025. The former is a contextual hub that summarises useful info from your apps. Think sports scores, weather reports, commute traffic and upcoming calendar appointments. The latter simplifies that even further on your lock screen, a bit like Live Activities on iOS.
There’s also Circle to Search; this Google-led tool isn’t exclusive to Samsung phones any more, but it works brilliantly with the S25 Ultra’s S Pen. Press and hold the home button (or gesture bar, if you’re using gesture controls) and draw a circle around anything onscreen. Machine learning recognises objects and locations in a flash, bringing up relevant Google searches – including where to buy the items in question.
Samsung has also added AI to its image editor and photo gallery. It can remove unwanted reflections from glass and shadows from faces with a tap, delete or reposition objects anywhere in the frame, and generationally expand any images you’ve cropped too tightly. The AI camera elements are largely done post-shutter press, rather than before, but object detection does rely on machine learning.
Finally, Instant Slow-mo can create extra frames and inject them into your recorded video footage, creating a convincing effect even if your clips were only shot at 30fps. Just preview your video in the Samsung Gallery app, press and hold on the moment you want slowed down, and it’ll play back brilliantly smoothly.
The best news for owners of older Galaxy phones? Samsung will likely bring most of these AI additions to the Galaxy Z Fold6, Flip6, Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S23 series, meaning you don’t need to upgrade to try them out.

After burning through US$46 billion on the metaverse with little to show for it, the Meta CEO is now doubling down with an even more ambitious wager: superintelligence AI.

This time, however, the stakes are higher, the competition more fierce, and the potential rewards more transformative than anything Meta has attempted before.

With nine-figure compensation packages and infrastructure investments that dwarf even the metaverse spending spree, Zuckerberg’s superintelligence AI gamble represents Silicon Valley’s most expensive talent war – one that could either cement Meta’s position as a tech giant or become another cautionary tale of visionary ambition meeting harsh reality.

The birth of Meta Superintelligence Labs

The formation of Meta Superintelligence Labs marks a shift for the social media giant. In an exclusive interview with The Information‘s TITV live-streaming programme, Zuckerberg told founder Jessica Lessin that “the most exciting thing this year is that we’re starting to see early glimpses of self-improvement with the models, which means that developing super intelligence is now in sight.”

The integration of Wang’s team as a re-imagining of how Meta approaches AI development. The group is working in an office space siloed from the rest of the company and next to Zuckerberg, highlighting the importance placed on the initiative.

A philosophical shift: From open source to closed development

Perhaps the most significant development emerging from Meta Superintelligence Labs is a potential abandonment of the company’s long-standing open-source philosophy. Last week, a small group of top members of the lab, including Wang, discussed abandoning the company’s most powerful open source AI model, called Behemoth, in favour of developing a closed model.

This represents a departure from Meta’s historical approach. For years, Meta has chosen to open source its AI models, making code public for other developers to build on. Meta executives have argued it is better for the technology to be built in public so that AI development will move faster and be accessible to more developers.

The shift reflects concerns about competitive positioning in the AI race. Meta had finished feeding data into its Behemoth model (training) but has delayed its release because of poor internal performance. The setback has prompted a serious reconsideration of the company’s approach.

Infrastructure as a competitive advantage

Zuckerberg revealed that the company is “building multiple, multi-gigawatt data centres” and pioneering new construction methods, including “weatherproof tents” to accelerate deployment.

In Q1 2025, it held a 40% share – something Samsung likely didn’t expect when this race began.

I’ve tested nearly every Galaxy Fold – every one except, apparently, the Fold7. Samsung Ukraine decided we didn’t need to review it. Maybe they were worried we’d tell it like it is. But I did spend six months using the Fold4, and that was exactly the kind of “unconventional experience” where you’re both intrigued and constantly thinking about switching back to a normal phone – without needing a therapist. The display? It didn’t survive the first cold snap – its protective film peeled off like a moody teenager storming out after an argument. Apps? Almost half had no idea what to do with the inner screen. Overall, software optimization felt like a student showing up to an exam hoping to wing it.

And yet, I loved that phone. Because I genuinely appreciate when technology dares to be different – even when it stumbles.

iOS 17 is the newest version of iOS, the operating system that is designed to run on the iPhone. Previewed in June, iOS 17 is available now on the iPhone XR/XS and later. There are new features for Phone, FaceTime, and Messages, along with small improvements for other apps and an all new app that's coming later this year for journaling.

Apple focused on communication, and overhauled the Phone app. You can now create customized Contact Posters that people see when you call them. You can choose a photo or a Memoji, select a font, a font color, and more. Contact Posters are available for the Phone app and also for third-party apps.

When someone leaves a voicemail, the Live Voicemail feature shows a real-time transcription of the message on the Lock Screen as the person is speaking. Based on what's being said, you can choose to pick up the phone. Calls marked as spam by carriers will be instantly declined and won't appear as Live Voicemail.

NameDrop, a new facet of AirDrop, lets you bring your iPhone near another iPhone to exchange contact information. This works with Apple Watch as well. Bringing two iPhones together can initiate SharePlay so you can listen to music, watch a movie, or play a game with another person who has an iPhone, and it also works for transferring content. Later this year, AirDrop will allow large file transfers to be initiated by two phones in close proximity, with the transfer finishing over iCloud.

FaceTime supports both audio and video messages, so if you don't pick up a call, the person on the other end can leave a video recording for you or an audio message. FaceTime also supports a range of Reactions like hearts, balloons, fireworks, laser beams, and rain. Effects are activated through gestures, and will also work in third-party apps.

An iPhone or iPad can now link to the Apple TV 4K for FaceTime on the TV. Using Continuity Camera, an iOS device serves as the camera for a FaceTime call, but the video is displayed on the larger screen of the TV. It supports Center Stage framing and all other FaceTime features, including Handoff, for transferring calls between an iOS device and the TV.

In the Messages app, there's a cleaner interface with access to apps, photos, and the camera tucked away behind a "+" button that's next to the compose bar. Tapping on the button gives quick access to the Camera, Photos, Apple Cash, Audio Messages, your Messages apps, and an updated Stickers experience.

All emoji characters are now stickers and are in the Stickers section of the Messages app. Emoji can be used as normal, but can also be placed over images and messages like a sticker. You can create your own stickers from your photos using the Remove Subject from Background feature that was introduced in iOS 16. If you use a Live Photo, you'll end up with an animated sticker that you can share in the Messages app. Stickers can have special effects like a hand drawn look, glitter, or a different color, and they can also be used across iOS, essentially wherever you can use an emoji.

Search in Messages supports search filters for finding exactly what you're looking for. You can start with a broad search and narrow down the results by entering additional search terms. If you have trouble keeping up in group chats or with a person who sends a lot of messages, the catch-up arrow lets you know exactly where you left off so you can see what's unread. You can reply right inline by swiping on a text bubble, and if you send an audio message, it's now transcribed automatically so it can be read right then. One-time verification codes delivered by the Messages app can be deleted automatically.

Location sharing in Messages is simpler and when a user shares a location, it's updated in real time in the conversation. It works in tandem with Check In, a safety feature that tells a friend or family member that you've arrived safely at your destination when traveling. When Check In is turned on, the person you're communicating with is notified when you arrive where you're going, and if you don't make it in time or progress stalls, your contact can see your iPhone's location, battery level, and cellular status to determine whether you need help. Unsolicited nude photos can also be blocked in messages with a new nudity warning.

What are the security and privacy features of Apple iOS?

iOS includes the following security features:

THE MIGHTY SMARTPHONE is facing a reckoning—at least from a sales perspective. During the 2022 holiday season, smartphone shipments declined more than 18 percent from the same period the year before. In general, last year had the lowest annual shipment total since 2013. Research firm IDC said this was due to “significantly dampened consumer demand, inflation, and economic uncertainties.”

One needs only to do a double-take at their grocery bill to feel these pressures, but macroeconomics aside, the smartphone itself probably deserves some of the blame (or credit) for our waning interest. Smartphones are, actually, amazing devices. That’s why we’re so addicted to them and why, in so many places around the globe, most people have one. You don’t even need to spend a grand anymore to get a premium phone. Have you used a $300 or $400 phone lately? They’re pretty darn good. Phones are also becoming more repairable; why buy a new one when you can just swap in a better battery? The used or refurbished market is growing too.

So what’s the future of the phone itself in this era of slowing sales? As WIRED commemorates its 30th year as a publication, we asked more than half a dozen technologists, builders, designers, analysts, and futurists their thoughts on what’s next for the smartphone. Some focused on the form factor. Others said sophisticated silicon will help us identify “real” media versus fake or AI-generated facsimiles. And a few predicted that actual phone calls will fall by the wayside. Still, almost all of them believe that the smartphone is something we’ll continue to carry with us, both literally and metaphorically. The smartphone market may never see the same meteoric rise that it did in the 2010s, but the all-powerful pocket computer is here to stay.

Below are five of their responses to the question: What does the smartphone, and our usage of the smartphone, look like in 10 years?

Tony Fadell, principal at Build Collective: I’m not a soothsayer, so I don’t know exactly what’s going to happen. But I do know what’s going on at the technology level. I think we’re going to continue to see better and better displays. Brighter colors and better power management and stuff like that. But also, the pixel density is going to be really great, and it’s going to be a question of, what else can you hide underneath the display?

Foldables will be a niche; they’re very expensive, and they’re going to continue to be bulkier because of the nature of mechanical systems. So I think there will be a specific place or specific needs for those.

More specifically, though, I think the connection between the pixel that you see and the CPU and the graphics cores will be fully encrypted. So right now, when we say something’s encrypted, it’s from the device to the server. It’s encrypted in transit, or in storage. In the future, things will be encrypted between chips and between input-output. And this is because you’re going to want to know something was real. So when you capture a voice, or a photo, or a video, it’s being processed through a specific core, and it’s being stamped. It’s verifying that it was not a deepfake, it was not doctored in some way or photoshopped or filtered.

The smartphone AI market is poised to grow along with smartphone ownership, which is expected to grow to 3.8 billion by 2021, according to market researcher Newzoo. While many phone manufacturers are building in expected AI features like user authentication, emotion recognition and device management, the true potential of AI-enabled smartphones are in understanding user behaviors.

Companies spend billions every year in mobile advertising to better understand their customers’ behaviors. While more companies are investing in mobile advertising, these companies are still searching for better user data and the ability to better target consumers with contextual offers.

AI is poised to help, now making it possible to allow the smartphone itself to create an accurate and rich offline profile of its owner. Moreover, and perhaps surprisingly, it can be done without sharing any personally identifiable information (PII) outside of the phone. This is possible by smart interpretation and fusion of the signals generated by on-device multiple sensors such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, barometers, accelerometers, GPS and more.

How much intelligence can you hold in your hand? The answer is quite a lot.

2017 was the year artificial intelligence (AI) finally arrived in our smartphones. Not just in the cloud that smartphones connect to, but in the smartphones themselves.

Featuring on-device AI engines, these phones are designed to efficiently take in data from sensors, assimilate it, then store and compute it locally on the device. Performing tasks such as facial recognition, activity prediction and enhanced data encryption, these phones must balance demands for additional storage and computational power with size constraints, cost effectiveness and battery power. Because the AI chips going into these phones must be able to deliver speedy, accurate decisions from local data, they are reliant upon faster and more innovative system memory and storage.

Real-World Use Cases for AI Smartphones

New user experiences have already emerged from the enhanced image, auditory and voice processing capabilities offered by the latest smartphones. The next wave of experiences will be apps that support new use cases for AI in smartphones, including language processing, human activity prediction, and enhanced data encryption, among others.

As facial recognition for user authentication catches on, innovators will use on-device AI to help user authentication become more complex, yet more secure and more convenient. For instance, previously, a photograph could be used to defeat facial recognition. Now, using multiple 3D-depth sensors and infrared cameras, smartphone user authentication is both more secure and faster.

Natural language translation with on-device AI can enhance the speech recognition already present in most smartphones. Even further, local analysis and processing phone and chat conversations can help a smartphone become more responsive by using intent prediction, where a person’s behavior is predicted and a smart assistant recommends an action or a purchase. Future smartphone apps will surely move some buyer-assistance functionalities from cloud-based bots to smartphones, which are faster and more secure.

Integrating cloud-based AI with on-device AI expands the range of use cases even further. The University of California, Berkeley, for example, has an earthquake warning app called MyShake that uses the accelerometer sensor in your phone (it adjusts the screen when you turn the phone sideways) and GPS to measure how much shaking is happening locally. Combined with gathering reports from other MyShake users near you and performing consolidated analysis in the cloud, this application is meant to develop into both a personal seismometer and an early warning system.

Smartphones Becoming Learning Machines

Powering the shift to local, on-device AI are new specialized AI processing chips, which are technically more machine learning than AI. Machine learning is a subset of AI; it is technology that helps machines, over time, automatically learn for themselves without manual programming by responding to different types of data and eventually creating repeatable patterns. Neural network systems help these machine-learning applications sort through data, enabling computers to classify data more quickly. In 2017, engineers learned how to add a new AI component into their system-on-chips (SoCs) that improved the performance and efficiency of “smart” or AI-assistant tasks, and made it cost-, power- and size-effective.

AI is Accelerating the Challenge of Mobile Size and Power

Of a smartphone’s components, the CPU/GPU, display and memory consume the most power. Adding to that is now the power requirement for these new AI engines. Consumer demands for more pixel-rich displays and more memory to support them add to the load, so battery life continues to be a major concern for manufacturers.

Commercial 5G network services are expected to arrive in selected cities later this year. This future of ubiquitous, ultra-high-speed wireless connectivity, offering throughput up to 50 times faster than existing 4G networks, with latency improvements at least five times better than 4G, will unlock incredible possibilities for multimedia and video experiences. But mobile devices will require a more sophisticated memory subsystem to keep up with the speed and storage requirements without increasing power or footprint.

A Dedicated AI Engine Needs Processing

Local AI processing will add to the increased memory size and requirements of storage. More importantly, as more AI-specific applications are written, the need for faster storage performance will increase exponentially.

3D NAND is becoming the go-to storage solution for mobile devices that require high density and high capacity in a small footprint. The latest 64-layer versions of 3D NAND stack layers of data storage cells vertically to create storage devices with up to six times higher capacity than legacy 2D planar NAND technologies.

Additionally, the latest 3D NAND memory devices use the high-performance UFS storage interface, which enables read and write commands simultaneously with faster random read speeds than the previous generation e.MMC 5.1 interface. This combination of 3D NAND silicon and the speedy UFS interface enables more storage in a smaller die area, bringing significant cost savings, low power usage and high performance to power mobile devices equipped with AI.

A Shining Future

Smart-assistant features and functionality on smartphones must support fast—yet precise—decisions from the flows of data. Slow storage and memory means slow AI training performance, creating longer standby time and a fast-draining battery. The good news is that memory and storage innovations are delivering faster I/O operations and near-real-time AI calculation, feeding the growing data needs of these AI engines to create a powerful user experience.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE DEFINITION: BASICS OF AI

Understanding AI

Broadly speaking, artificially intelligent systems can perform tasks commonly associated with human cognitive functions — such as interpreting speech, playing games and identifying patterns. They typically learn how to do so by processing massive amounts of data, looking for patterns to model in their own decision-making. In many cases, humans will supervise an AI’s learning process, reinforcing good decisions and discouraging bad ones. But some AI systems are designed to learn without supervision — for instance, by playing a video game over and over until they eventually figure out the rules and how to win.

Strong AI Vs. Weak AI

Intelligence is tricky to define, which is why AI experts typically distinguish between strong AI and weak AI.

Strong AI

Strong AI, also known as artificial general intelligence, is a machine that can solve problems it’s never been trained to work on — much like a human can. This is the kind of AI we see in movies, like the robots from Westworld or the character Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation. This type of AI doesn’t actually exist yet.

The creation of a machine with human-level intelligence that can be applied to any task is the Holy Grail for many AI researchers, but the quest for artificial general intelligence has been fraught with difficulty. And some believe strong AI research should be limited, due to the potential risks of creating a powerful AI without appropriate guardrails.

In contrast to weak AI, strong AI represents a machine with a full set of cognitive abilities — and an equally wide array of use cases — but time hasn't eased the difficulty of achieving such a feat.

Weak AI

Weak AI, sometimes referred to as narrow AI or specialized AI, operates within a limited context and is a simulation of human intelligence applied to a narrowly defined problem (like driving a car, transcribing human speech or curating content on a website).

Weak AI is often focused on performing a single task extremely well. While these machines may seem intelligent, they operate under far more constraints and limitations than even the most basic human intelligence.

Machine Learning Vs. Deep Learning

Although the terms “machine learning” and “deep learning” come up frequently in conversations about AI, they should not be used interchangeably. Deep learning is a form of machine learning, and machine learning is a subfield of artificial intelligence.

Machine Learning

A machine learning algorithm is fed data by a computer and uses statistical techniques to help it “learn” how to get progressively better at a task, without necessarily having been specifically programmed for that task. Instead, ML algorithms use historical data as input to predict new output values. To that end, ML consists of both supervised learning (where the expected output for the input is known thanks to labeled data sets) and unsupervised learning (where the expected outputs are unknown due to the use of unlabeled data sets).

Deep Learning

Deep learning is a type of machine learning that runs inputs through a biologically inspired neural network architecture. The neural networks contain a number of hidden layers through which the data is processed, allowing the machine to go “deep” in its learning, making connections and weighting input for the best results.

Artificial intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems. Specific applications of AI include expert systems, natural language processing, speech recognition and machine vision.

How does AI work?

As the hype around AI has accelerated, vendors have been scrambling to promote how their products and services use it. Often, what they refer to as AI is simply a component of the technology, such as machine learning. AI requires a foundation of specialized hardware and software for writing and training machine learning algorithms. No single programming language is synonymous with AI, but Python, R, Java, C++ and Julia have features popular with AI developers.

In general, AI systems work by ingesting large amounts of labeled training data, analyzing the data for correlations and patterns, and using these patterns to make predictions about future states. In this way, a chatbot that is fed examples of text can learn to generate lifelike exchanges with people, or an image recognition tool can learn to identify and describe objects in images by reviewing millions of examples. New, rapidly improving generative AI techniques can create realistic text, images, music and other media.

AI programming focuses on cognitive skills that include the following:

Learning. This aspect of AI programming focuses on acquiring data and creating rules for how to turn it into actionable information. The rules, which are called algorithms, provide computing devices with step-by-step instructions for how to complete a specific task.
Reasoning. This aspect of AI programming focuses on choosing the right algorithm to reach a desired outcome.
Self-correction. This aspect of AI programming is designed to continually fine-tune algorithms and ensure they provide the most accurate results possible.
Creativity. This aspect of AI uses neural networks, rules-based systems, statistical methods and other AI techniques to generate new images, new text, new music and new ideas.

Differences between AI, machine learning and deep learning

AI, machine learning and deep learning are common terms in enterprise IT and sometimes used interchangeably, especially by companies in their marketing materials. But there are distinctions. The term AI, coined in the 1950s, refers to the simulation of human intelligence by machines. It covers an ever-changing set of capabilities as new technologies are developed. Technologies that come under the umbrella of AI include machine learning and deep learning.

Machine learning enables software applications to become more accurate at predicting outcomes without being explicitly programmed to do so. Machine learning algorithms use historical data as input to predict new output values. This approach became vastly more effective with the rise of large data sets to train on. Deep learning, a subset of machine learning, is based on our understanding of how the brain is structured. Deep learning's use of artificial neural networks structure is the underpinning of recent advances in AI, including self-driving cars and ChatGPT.

Why is artificial intelligence important?

AI is important for its potential to change how we live, work and play. It has been effectively used in business to automate tasks done by humans, including customer service work, lead generation, fraud detection and quality control. In a number of areas, AI can perform tasks much better than humans. Particularly when it comes to repetitive, detail-oriented tasks, such as analyzing large numbers of legal documents to ensure relevant fields are filled in properly, AI tools often complete jobs quickly and with relatively few errors. Because of the massive data sets it can process, AI can also give enterprises insights into their operations they might not have been aware of. The rapidly expanding population of generative AI tools will be important in fields ranging from education and marketing to product design.Indeed, advances in AI techniques have not only helped fuel an explosion in efficiency, but opened the door to entirely new business opportunities for some larger enterprises. Prior to the current wave of AI, it would have been hard to imagine using computer software to connect riders to taxis, but Uber has become a Fortune 500 company by doing just that.

AI has become central to many of today's largest and most successful companies, including Alphabet, Apple, Microsoft and Meta, where AI technologies are used to improve operations and outpace competitors. At Alphabet subsidiary Google, for example, AI is central to its search engine, Waymo's self-driving cars and Google Brain, which invented the transformer neural network architecture that underpins the recent breakthroughs in natural language processing.
