If you'd have asked me back in March what I'd be doing in July, I'd have said panicking! During March I went through a drought. Droughts happen now and then but they've never been a major problem. Now that I'm supporting a family of four on my own, a drought is an issue. Especially when we don't cut back on spending when we should! Well, July is very different to March. Actually, May was

Just today I lost a client. Well, I say a client. I had a 6 week trial and was dropped after just 2 (and only one piece). The reason? My writing skills weren't up to scratch. It's very easy to lose confidence in your writing when that happens. Even though negative reviews and rejection are part of being a writer, it can still sting when it happens. Especially after 7 years of writing and minimal

March and April were dry months for me. I spent a lot of time pitching and not enough creating content for cold hard cash. Sometimes that can happen as a freelance writer. But May looked up. My clients had more work (they had warned me about the temporary slow down, so I could plan ahead) and I took on a new client. But I still kept pitching. One of the pitches went well, and I gained a

This week I've made some changes to my office space. I got really excited about it and couldn't wait to get back to work as soon as I made the changes. Then I realised how ridiculous I sounded. Only those who work from home would actually appreciate some of the changes I'd made and would appreciate my excitement in them. Here's a look at those things. #1: A new desk. I traded my old,

This week I got a new client. I'm excited, as the project is interesting and perfect for the resent rebranding I did of my website. But it wasn't smooth sailing. Technology and time differences caused a problem for us at first. It's easy to think that clients are being annoying and non-committal. But then this potential client could think the same about you. Despite time differences and tech

I've once again let this blog die. Well, not quite die but it is dormant. Things have been so busy that I just haven't had the chance to write much for myself. Honestly, I also didn't know what I wanted to do with many of my blogs. Originally a place to share my thoughts, they've turned into business related blogs. Even this one is more about tips for writers and bloggers than what it

It's really easy to plagiarize without meaning to. I mean really easy. Chances are you've done it in the past without even thinking about it. You see, plagiarizing is more than just copying content word for word. It's copying the layout of the piece or using the exact same tips. You may say the content in a completely different way, but you didn't write it yourself, did you? This type of

Are you not happy with your life? Maybe you're fed up of being unemployed or you hate being stuck in the same town that you grew up in. I know lots of people who spend their time complaining about their lives on Facebook or in blogs. They focus on all the negatives instead of taking steps to make changes. Complaining isn't going to do anything for you. What you need to do is find ways to

It's Thanksgiving this week in the United States. In Canada, we celebrated Thanksgiving back in October but that doesn't mean I can't think about what I'm thankful for this week. For me, I'm thankful for the decision to move internationally this year. I've been able to focus on my business but also get it in a way that I can spend more time with my family. I'm making more money but working

I've read and written many reviews in my time. In fact, I regularly get asked to review products for some sort of compensation, whether it's financial or product compensation. I love reading books and popping my thoughts up online and I try to review any site that I use. When I review, I always tell the truth. I stick to the facts, sharing my opinion in a way that will help others. I don't

Some of the 4 year olds in the UK are set homework by their schools. Here in Canada, they're not set homework but they are encouraged to do some reading and learning some writing and numbers with us. Every day my daughter comes home from school and says she needs to do her "work." We always let her sit at the dining table and trace her numbers, write her name, and do her drawings that she

I was talking to my husband this morning about NaNoWriMo, telling him what it was. Every year I've tried to write a novel and every year I've failed. In fact, I get to November 2 or 3 and decide to give it up because I just always have way too much to do. Last year I was working 2 jobs, 7 months pregnant, with a 3 year old to get around everywhere The year before I was running a business,

I've spoken a lot recently about having a niche for each of your blogs. But I do believe in having one personal blog. This is the place to get all your thoughts down, and write about all the topics that truly interest you. This is exactly what this blog is. It's my personal space to share what I think, what I know, and what I need to get off my chest. Some could say it's a diary of sorts, but

On Monday, I shared the tip to choose what you want to get out of your blog. This will help with the creation of content and making sure you get the right message to your target audience. With all that in mind, I thought it would be worth sharing what I want to get out of my blogs. I have multiple blogs and a few other ideas that I'd like to create in the future. Right now, I'm going to work

There are a few sites that don't allow personal blogging content. It's something that I am completely in favor of, but then I realized that there are debates and confusion over the term personal content on writing sites. Just what is it when sites ask for nothing personal? For me, personal content is something that people can't take anything from. Some people say that it is diary entries,

You've heard the time management tips of multitasking. People say not to do it. Well, I routinely ignore this advice. More often than not I will multitask. In fact, right now I have multiple tabs open all for different things. I'm even making notes of writing course ideas to start creating and offering. Multitasking works for me. I know it does and I've been doing it for years. I've had to be

I’ve spent the last few days thinking about my writing goals for October. Off the back of two 30 Day Blogging Challenges, I’ve made the decision that I want to change a few plans that I had in the summer. Over the last month, I realized that I didn’t want to blog daily in the weight loss niche anymore. I like it but I don’t like it enough. The blog is no longer what I initially set it up as

Have you ever wondered whether people actually make money watching TV? Well, I do it and I know quite a few other people who make money this way. Well, it's not quite the watching TV part that makes them the money. It's the things they do around the TV schedule. Right now, I'm making a five-figure income yearly writing about TV shows and spoilers. I tend to watch quite a bit of TV but I think

As freelance writers we hear all the time that it’s feast or famine. We seem to have more work than we can manage or we don’t have enough to keep food on the table. There are fears that we’ll never get a client again or that our family will lose the home. I know I’ve felt like that in the past. There was a time that I just seemed to have no work at all. I was struggling to meet a target of $

My husband and I are in the planning stages of launching a new site. It’s been something we’ve wanted to do for a while and now finally have some time. Last week, a client dropped me. Initially it was a bad thing but I quickly took it as a good thing. I started applying for a few better paying jobs—not heard back from any yet—and then looked at the residual income and non-upfront paying

Yesterday I was alerted that a client had dropped me. I was part of a writing team and the client had been having problems with some of the articles he’d received. I’ve got to be honest that I don’t really like working in writing teams. I don’t know the people and can’t always create a relationship with them. They think of themselves rather than the good of the team, so can produce

After a week of a very slow blog and other sites acting up, I've come to the conclusion that it's the web host. I've tried everything I can to get the site working again. And it's so frustrating when it just doesn't work as it should. This change has only happened since I updated the WordPress version. But I can't blame that because so many other sites have updated and not had the problem. It

I don’t often shout about my writing accomplishments. Maybe I should, but I’ve got to be honest that sometimes I suffer from a lack of confidence when it comes to writing. That has happened recently with a few problems on one particular writing gig. I’ve ended up finding more clients, only to either not hear from them or find out that the positions have already been filled. So, I’ve been

Sites change all the time. I know they need to evolve with how Google, Bing and others change, but that can mean the sites aren’t right for me as a writer. I need to grow my online income, and that means turning away from some sites. I means putting more effort into others sites online. I’ll be doing that from this week. The Inquisitr has recently changed its way that it pays writers.

I’m always looking for new clients and sites to write at. I’d like to be comfortable with clients and know that any one of my baskets could go at any one time. Well, I thought there was going to be something positive today with new clients but it turned out not to be the case. Not only was the client only willing to pay a small amount (a penny a word isn’t going to cut it for me), but
