Free COVID test kits are available for kids on Thursday, December 30 and Friday, December 31st.

These tests are optional. They are NOT required to return to school.

To get the test kits, you need to register at THIS LINK. Scroll down and go to the next page as necessary. Please note the day, time, and location. (There are sites in East Montpelier and in Berlin).

The tests are rapid-tests that you perform at home on Saturday and Sunday. School resumes on Monday.

The school board wants to hear your ideas

Hello families,

The Montpelier Roxbury school board is the group of people who make decisions about our school budgets. They are elected by Montpelier and Roxbury voters.

The school board wants to hear from parents (that's you!) about your values, concerns, and ideas. The school board is inviting parents to a Community Listening Session.

Questions can include:

What are the top three things you would like to see more investment or spending in?
What are some of the values that should be driving our spending decisions?
What are your top three challenges and concerns?
What are you seeing that is working really well?
What would you like to see more of?
What do you value the most?
Students: What is the best thing about school for you?
Students: What are your challenges?

You can participate in several ways:

If your child is registered for Monday's vaccine clinic, please see THIS DOCUMENT to know when your child's class will be receiving vaccines. **The times are different than what you signed up for.**

You can come in to be with your child, if you choose.

Please arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled time.

Come to the main entrance. You will need to wait outside until it is your child's turn. Please dress warmly!

Monday's vaccine clinic is full. If you'd like to make an appointment for your child to be vaccinated in another location, please see the information below.

Covid vaccine clinic at UES on Nov. 8 - sign up beginning Nov. 4

Hello families,

UES will be hosting a Covid vaccine clinic for 5-11 year olds. It is completely optional.

If you choose to have your child vaccinated against Covid, you can do it at the school clinic, at a local pharmacy, or at your family doctor.

The clinic at UES will be on Monday, November 8 (first dose) and Monday, November 29 (second dose). The Pfizer vaccine will be given.

Registration for the UES clinic will be online and will go live on Thursday, November 4 at 8:00 a.m.

If you want to have your child vaccinated at UES:

Before Thursday, go to this Department of Health website to create an account for your child. (Scroll down to the blue "make an appointment" button.)
On Thursday at 8 a.m., go to the same website to register your child for a time slot. Choose any time.

If you do not sign up your child for vaccination, they will not be vaccinated.

You are welcome to come to the school at the time we’ve scheduled your child to be vaccinated and join your child when they get their shot. More information will be coming soon on how to join your child for the vaccine.

Caregiver Forum regarding COVID Vaccines for children under 12

Hello families,

Today Superintendent Libby Bonesteel sent a letter regarding vaccines for children under 12.

An FDA Advisory Committee has recommended the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use for children ages 5-11 years old.

MRPS will hold a vaccine clinic for children as soon as possible. It is not scheduled yet. Details will be coming.

On Monday, November 8, there will be an information forum (meeting). The purpose is to answer questions about the vaccine for children.

Presenters: Melissa Houser, MD, a MRPS parent and doctor who specializes in family medicine, and Sierra Miller, DNP, RN.

COVID testing for students, and Caregivers Alliance meeting

COVID Testing for Students

Starting on Monday, September 20, MRPS schools will administer COVID tests to students.
Testing will happen only if parents says "yes" to the testing. To give your permission ("consent"), fill out this form.
A part-time school nurse will do the testing on Mondays.
There is no cost for the testing. Families will be able to see the results online within 72 hours.
If you have questions, contact UES school nurse Megan Spaulding at meganspaulding@mpsvt.org.

It has been wonderful to see your children this week. We are enjoying being back in person and working with our learners. Here are some changes and details for this school year:

New start time

School starts at 8:00a.m. this year.
Classes enter the building at 8:00 promptly, so it's great if children can arrive a few minutes before 8:00.
You can drop your child starting at 7:50.

Breakfast and lunch

This year, all students can get hot lunch and breakfast free of charge.
Classroom teachers are sending home sign-up papers each week. Check your child's home folder for this paper.
The September lunch menu is here.
If a day's lunch contains meat, a vegetarian option is available.
If you would like your child to have the vegetarian option, check "vegetarian" on the sign-up paper.
Breakfast comes in a paper bag and is given to kids at the end of the day. They can take it home and eat it at home. We are not eating breakfast at school this year.

Stay home when sick!

If your child has any of the following symptoms, please keep them at home and contact your family doctor or our school nurse, Megan Spaulding (225-8206 or meganspaulding@mpsvt.org).

Fever (100.4 F or higher)
Cough
Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
Chills
Fatigue
Muscle or body aches
Headache
Sore throat
New loss of taste or smell
Congestion or runny nose

If your child is going to be absent from school, you must notify the office before 9:00am. You can call the office at 225-8200 and leave a message, or you can email Diana at dianakoliander@mpsvt.org.

Our principal, Peter Farrell, sends a weekly newsletter with lots of important information. It's called the Swoop Scoop. You can see the latest issue here. To subscribe, click "follow Peter Farrell" on the right side.
We have a new administrative assistant in the office named Alyssa Hamel. If you see an email from her, please open it! Diana Koliander-Hart is still at UES and also sends emails sometimes.

Changes in travel guidance and morning tickets

Superintendent Libby Bonesteel recently sent a letter to families. It explains some of the State of Vermont's reopening plan, called Vermont Forward. Here are some important changes:

Any Vermont resident who travels to another state does not have to quarantine when they return.
Anyone who travels out of state must get a Covid test within 3 days of returning to Vermont unless they are fully vaccinated.
Visitors are allowed to visit Vermont without quarantine.

School information:

At UES, the morning tickets will be changing. The new tickets are pink.
We ask that families continue to take your child's temperature in the morning before school.
If you travel, please be extra cautious when you return. If your child has any symptoms of a common cold, or Covid, please keep them at home and get tested.

Vaccination Registration

Hello families,
If you or someone you know fits into one of these categories, you can register for a Covid vaccination now:

BIPOC: Black, Indigenous, People of Color: age 16 and up: can now sign up through pharmacies (Kinney, Walgreens, CVS, etc.) and the Department of Health website. You can also call the Department of Health call center at 855-722-7878 and press 1 for an interpreter if needed.

Parents or primary caregivers of children with a serious medical condition can now sign up using the Department of Health website.

Anyone who is living in Vermont can be vaccinated. There is no citizenship requirement.

If you have questions, contact your school nurse, your child's EL teacher, or your family doctor.

Change to Gathering Restrictions, until January 2

Hello families,

Yesterday, Superintendent Bonesteel sent an email to families about new information from Governor Scott.

From December 23 - January 2, a family/household can gather with one other trusted family/household, and not need to quarantine after the visit. You may choose only one family/household to gather with. This is temporary and will end on January 2.

This is only for Vermont families. The quarantine requirements are still in place for visitors who live in another state.

On December 22, Governor Scott also said that Vermonters may resume outdoor activities with people from outside their household. You must continue to wear a face covering and keep physical distance.

Travel Restrictions - new information

Hello families,

Yesterday, Superintendent Libby Bonesteel sent a letter to families. The letter explains new travel restrictions from the Governor. You can read the letter here.

Here are the highlights:

If you travel out of Vermont for a few hours, a day trip, or a longer period of time, you must quarantine when you return.
If you are hosting travelers, they must quarantine. You do not need to quarantine if the guests can stay isolated in your home.
People traveling out of state for essential purposes do not need to quarantine.

You can get more details from the letter, from your child's EL teacher or classroom teacher, or from your school nurse.

Every school is getting information about family travel plans over the Thanksgiving and Winter vacation. Please fill out the paper form your child received, or you can complete this survey instead.

Dear Families,

Today Ryan Heraty sent out an important email. Here is some information from that email:

- ALL Union Elementary students will be learning from home (virtual learning) next week (October 26th - October 30th.

- You will receive information about at-home learning via email from your child's teacher. Please let us or your child's teacher know if you have any questions about that information.

- On Monday, October 26th, families can pick up devices and learning materials for their children at UES using the car drop-off loop. Please put your child's name and their teacher's name on the front dashboard of your car. Here are the pickup times:

Grades Pre-K / K 12:00 - 12:30PM
Grade 1 12:30 - 1PM
Grade 2 1:00 - 1:30PM
Grade 3 - 1:30 - 2PM
Grade 4 - 2:00 - 2:30PM

- Lunches are available for UES students to pick up at Montpelier High School while the UES building is closed. Please use this form to order lunches for pickup.

- The Vermont Department of Health is doing contact tracing for all positive COVID-19 cases at UES.

- There is free COVID-19 testing available for members of the UES community at Montpelier High School on Wednesday, October 28th. You can make an appointment for a test here. Please let us know if you need help making an appointment.

Information about COVID-19 Cases at UES

Dear Families,

Today Libby Bonesteel sent a letter with information about the positive COVID-19 cases at Union Elementary School this week. Here is a summary of that information:

- There have been six positive cases at UES. All six cases are in one classroom (pod).

- The teachers and students from that pod and their siblings are all quarantining at home.

- To keep students and staff safe, we continue to minimize contact between classrooms. We also continue to require all students and staff to wear masks, wash hands often, and maintain a distance of 6ft.

- All people who have had close contact with those infected will receive a call from contact tracers at the Vermont Department of Health.

- Special testing clinics are available in the Montpelier area this week. Please see our Testing Information page for location and appointment information.

Updates on Bussing and Daily Health Checks

Dear Families,

Superintendant Libby Bonesteel sent out this letter with information about Bus Routes and Daily Health Checks.

Bus Routes: For the best information about bus routes, visit the Bus Routes Page of the school website. The school district is also hiring bus monitors. This job is 10 hours per week. If you are interested in learning more, contact Anna Hipko at annahipko@mpsvt.org.

Daily Health Checks: The school nurses sent out a letter about daily health checks.

For everyone's safety, your child needs to stay home if:

They are not feeling well, or have any symptoms of COVID-19 (Fever, cough, fatigue, headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of sense of taste or smell),
They have spent time with someone who has COVID-19, or
They have travelled by plane, bus, or train, or to a county requiring quarantine.

Hello families, here is some more information about returning to school:

Lunch for all: This is new information: schools will be able to provide free breakfast and lunch to all children under 18 until the end of December. An online order form will be sent home each week, starting next week.

New school calendar: The school calendar has been revised. You can see it here.

Bus routes: Here are the bus routes. There may be delays during the first few weeks of school. Please be patient while we adjust to new systems.

Flu shots: Nurse Megan recommends that all adults and kids get a flu shot this year. Adults can get flu shots at their doctor or at pharmacies. Kids (6 months and older) can get flu shots at the pediatrician.

Masks: All students are expected to wear masks all day, including on the bus. Students can take "mask breaks" outside if they are 6 feet away from others. Of course, kids can take off their masks to eat! Kids will bring masks home every night so they can be washed.

Traveling: If you travel outside of Vermont, please refer to this map from the VT Department of Health. If you travel to a county that is not in Vermont, and it is not green on the map, you may need to quarantine when you return.

Returning to Union Elementary School - details about drop-off and pick-up

Hello families, we are very excited to welcome your children to school on September 8th! Here are some important details about coming to Union Elementary School:

On September 8 and 9, the morning bus will not run. Each grade will have a different arrival time. This is so we can practice our arrival system. This is the schedule for Sept. 8 and 9:

Grades will arrive at these times on the first two days of school only:
Grade	Arrival Time
Grade 4	8:00AM
Grade 3	8:30AM
Grade 2	9:00AM
Grade 1	9:30AM
Grade K	10:00AM

Starting on September 10, each morning, students arriving by foot or car will line up by class outside of the school between 8:00 - 8:15 am. The gate for entry will close at 8:20 am each morning.

If a family misses the morning arrival time (between 8:00 - 8:20 am) they can return at 10 am and press the buzzer on the front door of the school.

Car drop-off and pick-up will happen on Loomis Street - the same as in the past.

Walking students will need to enter and exit near the upper playground, from Hubbard Street. This is a change from the past!

In the afternoon, bus students will be dismissed at 1:00. Car pick-up and walking students will be dismissed at 1:15.

If your student is walking home, plan to meet them near the upper playground. You will need to use Hubbard Street to get to the playground.

Questions to ask your child every morning: Please look at page 2 of this document from Nurse Megan and ask your child these questions every morning before coming to school. If the answer is YES to any question, please keep your child at home that day.

Family conferences & mask wearing

Hello families,

Teachers have been back at school for a few days now. We are excited to start learning and laughing with your children again! This year will be different in some ways, but in many ways it will be the same: reading and writing, specials and math, and time with friends.

Superintendent Libby Bonesteel sent a letter to families on August 20. Here is some of the important information:

Parent conferences - families in grades K-8 will have a virtual family-teacher conference before school starts. The conference dates are Friday 8/28, Monday 8/31, and Tuesday 9/1. Please watch your email for a note from your child's teacher about scheduling a conference.

Air purifiers - every classroom will have an air purifier. Classrooms will also have plenty of hand sanitizer.

Masks - many parents have asked about masks. Our school nurse, Megan Spaulding, says:

Many children and adults this summer have been wearing face masks at camps, or schools in other countries, and have been doing very well with wearing them. Some children or adults with different health concerns should not wear them, but for children and adults with no health concerns, they can wear them without having any problems.

By wearing a mask, you are keeping your respiratory droplets to yourself. When everyone wears a mask, it's hard for the droplets to transfer from person to person. So when everyone in a classroom wears a mask, we are all protecting each other.

I highly recommend children and adults start wearing masks now and practicing at home for different lengths of time in order to get used to it before school starts.

If possible, every child should come to school each day with 3 masks: One to wear, and 2 in their backpack for just-in-case. Your EL teachers are practicing mask wearing too!

Weekly Update - Childcare, Safety, Classroom placements

Dear Families,

Teachers are getting ready for school! Last week, the weekly update from Libby Bonesteel included the following information:

Child Care: If you need help finding childcare, the Family Center of Washington County may be able to help. They may also be able to help you pay for childcare if needed.
Safety: The State of Vermont has revised the Safety Guidance for reopening schools.
Masks: All students who are attending school in person should bring 3 masks each day (one to wear and two extras).
Bus Routes: Routes for the busses will be available soon on the district website.
Teachers: Some students will have a different teacher than they were placed with in the spring. This is because some teacher roles have changed due to the creation of the Virtual Academy. You will receive notification in the coming days about your child's teacher.

Weekly Update - Air flow, Illness Procedures, Virtual Academy

Hello Everyone,

The weekly letter from Superintendent Libby Bonesteel included the following information:

- Air Quality: Andrew LaRosa, director of facilities, is working to get the most fresh air possible into our school buildings.

- Virtual Academy: If your family chose online schooling (Virtual Academy) for this year you should hear from Mike Berry, who is acting as principal for the Virtual Academy. If you do not hear from him by Monday, August 10th at 4:00, please contact him at michaelberry@mpsvt.org.

- Illness Procedures: Students and staff will need to stay home if they have a temperature of 100.4 Fahrenheit or above, or if they have symptoms of COVID-19. Symptoms include cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, chills, repeated shaking with chills, muscle pain/body aches, headache, sore throat, new loss of taste or smell, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, congestion or runny nose. Students and staff must be without symptoms for 24 hours before returning to school.

The deadline for this survey has been extended to Wednesday, August 5. If you would like your child to participate in the Virtual Academy for the entire school year (no in-person school at all), complete this survey by the end of the day on August 5.

NEW First Day of School - September 8th

The first day of school is now Tuesday, September 8th for all Montpelier-Roxbury Public Schools.

On July 28th, Governor Scott announced that all Vermont public schools will begin on September 8th. We will have a new school calendar available before school begins.

Optional "Virtual Academy" for 2020-2021 school year

Hello families,

Yesterday, Superintendent Libby Bonesteel sent a letter to families about a "Virtual Academy." The letter is here. Here is some of the most important information:

This year, there will be an all-virtual (at home, online) option for K-8 students.
There will still be an in-person (at school) option for K-8 students (details here).
Families can choose which option they want for their children.
The choice will be for the whole 2020-2021 school year.

Some reasons families might choose the "Virtual Academy" are:

A child is at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19.
A child lives with someone who is at high risk.
The family prefers this option.

We don't know all the details yet about the "Virtual Academy." Here are some things we do know:

It connects with the same curriculum.
There will be a "regular" school day with a schedule.
Learning will be synchronous and asynchronous.
Students can get school lunch.
An adult at home will need to supervise the child's work (for about 5 hours/day for K-4 students, about 2-3 hours/day for students in grades 5-8).

Virtual learning is not an equal experience to in-person instruction. The Vermont Agency of Education recommends that primary students choose in-person learning when possible.

The district requests that every family fill out a survey for each child with your choice. Please fill out the survey before August 3.

If you do not fill out a survey, we will assume your child will be attending school in-person. In other words, in-person school is the "default" option.

We know that this is complicated! Please, contact any of us to ask any questions.

Returning to School in the Fall

On July 16th, Superintendent Libby Bonesteel sent out this letter which tells about plans for returning to school in the fall.

Here are some of the most important updates:

The first day of school for students is scheduled for Monday, August 31st. This day may change as more information comes from the state Agency of Education.
Union Elementary School and Main Street Middle School will have a shorter school day. School will likely begin around 8:00 and end around 1:30. We will have more information about this when the times are finalized.
We will follow state rules to help keep students and adults healthy. All students and adults will wear masks. Everyone will have a daily health check before entering the school or the bus. Classrooms will be set up to allow 6 feet of distance between students. No visitors will be allowed in the school buildings. Students will eat lunch in their classrooms.
Schools will be cleaned regularly with QT-TB Disinfectant, which has been shown to kill coronavirus.
Work is being done to circulate as much air as possible through the school buildings.
A MRPS Virtual Academy is being developed to provide online school for kids who are "at risk" for severe responses to the coronavirus.

We hope you are having a wonderful summer and are staying cool. We have some announcements:

Bus Transportation

The district is beginning to plan bus transportation for the fall.
If your child will need bus transportation, please complete this survey as soon as possible.
Details about busses are included in the survey.

The school district sends updates by email.

They say "SwiftReach" at the bottom of the email.

The district is working hard to figure out what fall will be like. We are focused on keeping students safe at school. We will share details when we know them.
