A LA PRESA POR EL RIO CHILLAR.-
A la presa a través del cauce del río Chillar
Este itinerario discurre por el cauce del río Chillar, Los Cahorros destacan por su belleza, son desfiladeros por donde el río se achica hasta un punto en el que se puede tocar las paredes laterales con sólo estirar los brazos. Una gran parte de esta ruta se hace por el lecho del río, por lo que hay que ir preparado, durante todo el año, el agua se eleva al nivel de la rodilla en algunos puntos.
El acceso a la ruta es a través de la calle Picasso, una de las calles por encima del Centro Municipal de Deportes, que conduce a un camino que desciende hasta el lecho del río. También se puede comenzar desde la desembocadura del río en la playa El Playazo.
Por el carril que serpentea a través de los cultivos del río Chillar llegamos a la confluencia con el río Higuerón. En la colina que separa ambas vías, La Cruz del Pinto, hay una cantera de áridos. Detrás de la cantera, el lecho del río se estrecha, los cultivos desaparecen y el carril continúa hasta llegar a La Tecera Fabrica o Salto Grande, una estación hidroeléctrica pequeña.
Desde este punto se tiene que continuar a pie, a través de un camino que alterna entre cada uno de los bordes del río y se pierde al llegar a Los Cahorros. La vegetación se hace cada vez más interesante debido a su exuberancia y buena conservación. Después de caminar a lo largo del lecho del río un tramo considerable llegamos a El Vado de los Patos, donde podremos tomar un baño. A partir de ahora será más difícil.
Aproximadamente 2 kilómetros más arriba nos encontramos con La Presa. En este punto el río se ensancha. A nuestra izquierda se encuentra un bosque de eucaliptos pequeños y un poco más arriba todavía, ya la derecha encontraremos un par de casas semi en ruinas frente a la cual se encuentra un árbol de albaricoque grandes. La presa es una gran reserva a la derecha del río donde el agua se acumula y, finalmente, llegará a los canales de riego que pasan por un lado del valle del Chillar.
Podemos regresar a lo largo de los bordes de estos canales de riego, de aproximadamente 6,5 Km. de longitud y, a medio camino, pasan a través de la llamada Cueva de las Palomas. El canal termina en la Fábrica Tercera. Esta alternativa nos ofrece un paisaje maravilloso, donde podemos ver todo el valle por donde fluye el río, aunque hay que tener cuidado ya que puede ser peligroso en algunos puntos.
La distancia desde el inicio de la ruta a través de la presa se encuentra a 8 Km. El tiempo requerido es el de un día entero, ya que caminar por el agua es lento.

TO THE DAM VIA THE CHILLAR RIVER BED.-This itinerary runs along the river bed of the Chillar river, where Los Cahorros stand out for their beauty, narrow passes through which the river stretches itself until a point where you can touch the side walls just by stretching out your arms. A large part of this route is encompassed by the river bed, due to which one must go prepared as, year round, the water rises to knee level at some points.
Access to the route is through calle Picasso, one of the streets above the Municipal Sports Centre, leading to a pathway which descends to the river bed. Access can also be gained via the mouth of the river at El Playazo Beach.
Following the lane which winds through the crops of the Chíllar river we arrive at the confluence with the river Higuerón. On the hill which separates both waterways, La Cruz del Pinto (The Pinto Cross), there is a dry quarry. Behind the quarry the river bed narrows, the crops disappear and the lane continues until reaching La Tecera Fabrica (The Third Factory) or Salto Grande (Great Jump), a small hydroelectrical station.
From this point one has to continue by foot, via a path which alternates between each of the river edges and loses itself upon reaching Los Cahorros. The vegetation becomes progressively more interesting due to its exuberance and good conservation. After walking along the river bed for a considerable stretch we reach the tarn known as El Vado de los Patos (The Ford of the Ducks), where we will be able to take a dip. Progress henceforth will be more dificult.
Approximately 2 kilometres
further up we encounter La Presa (The Dam). At this point the river widens. On our left there is a small eucaliptus forest and a little further up still and on the right we will find a couple of semi-ruined houses in front of which stands a large apricot tree. The dam is a large reservoir to the right of the river where the water accumulates and will eventually reach the irrigation channels which run through one side of the Chíllar valley.
We can walk back along the borders of these irrigation channels, of about 6,5km length and, halfway, pass through the so-called Cueva de las Palomas (Cave of the Doves). The canal ends at the Tercera Fábrica. This alternative offers us a wonderful landscape, where we can see the entire valley through which the river flows, although care is required as it may be dangerous at some points.
The distance from the beginning of the route through to the dam is 8km. The time required is that of a whole day, as progress through the water is slow.

A LA FUENTE EL ESPARTO.-

La Fuente del Esparto es un enclave útil para utilizar como punto de referencia en el seguimiento de varias rutas. La distancia desde la carretera nacional es de 6 km.
Desde la N-340 tomamos el desvío a la Cueva de Nerja. A unos 500 metros y precisamente en la entrada del aparcamiento de la Cueva seguiremos el carril que comienza a la izquierda junto a un pino pequeño.
El camino asciende entre colinas bajas y repoblada pinos jóvenes a la derecha del Barranco de la Coladilla, un área todavía se está recuperando de los incendios forestales del pasado.
Alrededor de dos kilómetros y medio más adelante llegamos a un cruce de caminos, a la derecha al Cortijo de La Civila, a través de la Cuesta de Romero y el camino de la izquierda nos llevará a la Fuente de Esparto. A nuestros pies veremos el Barranco de la Coladilla, salpicado de pequeños pinos, palmitos, romero y enebros. El lado opuesto es el de la Mangüeno Cerro donde hay un cortafuegos a lo largo de la cresta.
A menos de 2 kilómetros más allá del cruce de la Civila, llegamos a un área recreativa conocida como El Pinarillo, que cuenta con agua potable y barbacoas. Dejando esto a nuestra izquierda y continuando por el sendero, llegamos a la Fuente del Esparto. Esta debe su nombre a la abundancia de este vegetal en la zona (esparto), que fue recogido para su uso en la artesanía local como materia prima para la fabricación de cuerdas, cestas, alpargatas, etc
El agua que se encuentra allí, en realidad potable, hizo posible la construcción de una planta de lavado del mineral durante la época de la explotación minera en la sierra.
La distancia desde la N-340 es de 6 km.
Una ruta buena alternativa consiste en caminar a lo largo de la base del Barranco de la Coladilla. Se accede por la salida de la N-340, a través de invernaderos, hacia la antigua Fábrica de San Joaquín y en una vía que comienza detrás de esta fábrica. Muy cerca, podemos ver el Acueducto del Águila , construido para llevar agua a esta antigua fábrica de azúcar. Este carril pasa por el barranco a la derecha y cerca de una antigua cantera, más tarde utilizados para tiro al plato. Un poco más adelante bajamos al barranco y se puede disfrutar caminando a lo largo de su cauce bastante llano.

TO THE ESPARTO FOUNTAIN.-
The Fuente del Esparto (Esparto Fountain) is a useful enclave to use as a reference point in following various routes. The distance from the national road to it is that of 6km.
From the N-340 we take the turn-off to the Cave of Nerja. At about 500 m and precisely at the entrance to the car park of the Cave we will follow the lane which commences to our left next to a small pine tree.
The path ascends between low hills and repopulated young pines on the right of the Barranco de la Coladilla de los Cazadores (Ravine of the Hunter´s Defile), an area still recovering from the last forest fires.
About two and a half kilometres further on we come to a fork where the path to the right asceds to the Cortijo de La Civila (La Civila Framhouse) via de Cuesta de Romero (Romero Hill) and the path to the left will take us to the Esparto Fountain. At our feet the Barranco de la Coladilla continues, slotting into the bottom of the valley, dotted with small pine trees, box woods, palmettoes, rosemary and juniper bushes. The opposite side is that of the Cerro Mangüeno (Mangüeno Hill) where a firebreak runs along the crest.
Less than 2 kilometres past the La Civila fork and after passing the old rubbish dump, we come to a recreational area known as El Pinarillo (The Little Pine) which has drinkable water and barbecous. Leaving this to our left and continuing along the lane, we come to the Fuente del Esparto. This owes its name to the abundance of this vegetable in the area (esparto grass), which was picked for use in local craftmanship as base material for the manufacture of ropes, baskets, espadrilles, etc.
The water found there, actually drinkable, made possible the construction of a mineral washing plant during the time of mineral exploitation in the sierra.
The distance from the N-340is of 6 Km.
A good alternative route consists in walking along the base of the Barranco de la Coladilla. Access is gained by heading from the N-340, through greenhouses, towards the old Fábrica de San Joaquin (San Joaquin Factory) and following a lane which begins from behind this factory. Close by, we can see the Acueducto del Aguila (Eagle's Aqueduct), built to carry water to this old sugar factory. This lane passes by the ravine on the right and close to an old quarry, later used for clay pigeon shooting. A little further on we descend into the ravine and, continuing on, may enjoy walking along its tightly slotted bed.

HACIA ELALMENDRON.-

Recomendamos esta ruta debido a la espectacularidad de su paisaje. Aproximadamente a 1 Km de las minas de La Furia y El Uno y en la base de un pino grande, comienza el camino a nuestra izquierda, perfectamente visible.
Es en zig-zag hasta una loma y nos lleva hacia un puerto de montaña en la cara norte del Almendrón.
A partir de aquí se puede ver todo el valle del río Chillar, con el Cortijo del Imán en la parte inferior con impresionantes vistas panorámicas. Ahora estamos al pie del Tajo del Almendrón (Almendrón, que podremos subir desde este punto, para volver más tarde a lo largo de la misma ruta.

Si partimos por la mañana temprano, estaremos de vuelta por la tarde.

TO THE ALMENDRON.-

We recommend this route due to the spectacular nature of its landscape. Approximately 1 Km from the mines of La Furia and El Uno and at the base of a large pine tree, the path begins to our left, perfectly visible.

It zig-zags up a hillock and takes us towards a mountain pass on the North face of the Almendrón.
From here the entire valley of the Chillar River can be seen, with the Cortijo del Imán (Imán Farmhouse) at the bottom with impressive panoramic views. We are now at the foot of the Tajo del Almendrón (Almendrón Cliff) which we will be able to ascend from this point, to later return along the same route.
If we set off in the early morning we will be back by the afternoon.

HACIA EL NAVACHICA (1.832 metros).-

Esta es una de las rutas que se inicia en la Fuente del Esparto. Antiguamente se utilizaba para el transporte de minerales de las minas que están más arriba en el barranco. La loma de la Navachica, con sus 1.832 m de altitud, constituye el techo de la Sierra Almijara.

El itinerario comienza en el carril de la derecha, unos metros antes de la Fuente del Esparto. El camino nos lleva al corazón de la quebrada donde se puede depositar el coche y continuar a pie por el barranco de altas paredes. Debido a su naturaleza calcárea hay muchas grietas y pequeñas cuevas. Algunas de ellas, las situadas en las partes bajas, se han utilizado para las cabras del rebaño, como refugios o incluso como viviendas.
El pase se estrecha aún más y se convierte en un camino que continúa más allá de un chorro de agua, en zig-zag y ganando altura. Se nivela a unos 1.000 m de largo y llegamos de nuevo al barranco, donde parece terminar en un muro que bloquea su avance. Para superar este obstáculo el camino asciende de nuevo bruscamente, escalando por un sinuoso camino alrededor de la pared lateral del paso. Luego, alrededor de la muralla que impide nuestro progreso a lo largo del fondo del barranco, se desciende de nuevo al barranco y se llega a la entrada de las primeras minas de la ruta que están en la Mina del Uno (Minas de uno) y La Furia (La Furia) .
Es necesario no alejarse del establecimiento del camino porque las galerías de los pozos de ventilación permanecen abiertas y semi-camuflada por la vegetación, sin señales de advertencia.
De las minas que siguen a lo largo de la base de la quebrada hasta que llegamos a un cruce de caminos. En este punto debemos seguir el barranco a nuestra izquierda, dejando la quebrada de los Cazadores (que sigue a la derecha) y que nos llevaría hacia la Loma de la Encina. Continuando a lo largo de esta quebrada a la izquierda y a unos 300 metros más arriba, un cruce de nuevo aparece y ahora debemos seguir hacia la derecha.
A lo largo de este barranco nos encontramos con una serie de "pasos" de 2 a 3 metros de altura y que no será difícil de escalar. La pendiente se hace cada vez más empinada hasta llegar a un punto en el que el barranco se cierra y no podemos seguir más allá.
A partir de aquí se procede por un sendero muy empinado que se desvía a nuestra derecha entre encinas. Pasamos por unas cuevas llamadas Los Caños del Rey, donde podremos encontrar depósitos de agua durante casi todo el año. En la parte superior de esta subida nos encontramos con una colina llamada Ranchillo del Viento en la que merece la pena descansar para contemplar el paisaje, a partir de aquí el panorama de los alrededores del Barranco de Cazadores es extraordinario. También podemos ver la Navachica, toda la gama del Almendrón y a nuestra derecha un gran bosque de pino adulto negro mezclado con encinas, que parece un gran oasis rodeado completamente por montañas rocosas. Este es el Pinar de Lomas Llanas.
Para llegar a la Navachica de aquí nos basta con seguir cuesta arriba en dirección a la cima. Casi no se distinguen caminos, pero debido a la ausencia de maleza que no se tienen dificultades para encontrar nuestro camino. A lo largo de este camino la pendiente se suaviza nuevamente. Al ascender a la cumbre hemos realizado a pie unos 18 km, y todavía tenemos que bajar. Por esta razón, es necesario salir muy temprano en la mañana y hacer esta ruta cuando los días son más largos.

TO THE NAVACHICA (1.832 metres).-

This is one of the routes which begins at the Fuente del Esparto. Formerly it was used for the transport of minerals from the mines which are further up the ravine. The peak of the Navachica, with its 1,832m altitude, constitutes the rooftop of the Almijara Sierra.

The itinerary begins on the lane to the right, a few metres prior to the Fuente del Esparto. The path takes us to the heart of the ravine where we can deposit the car and proceed on foot along this high-walled ravine. Due to its limy nature there are many cracks and small caves. Some of them, those situated in the lower parts, have been used to herd goats, as refuges or even as houses.
The pass narrows further and turns into a path which continues past a water spout (populary known as "chorrera" - trickle), weaving zig-zags and gaining height. It levels out at about 1,000m and contonuing on along level ground we again reach the ravine bed, where the ravine appears to end in a wall which blocks its progress. To overcome this obstacle the path again ascends abruptly, climbing and winding its way around the side wall of the pass. Then, circling the wall which impeded our progress along the bed, it descends back to the ravine bed and arrives at the entrance to the first mines of our route which are the Mina del Uno (Mine of One) and La Furia (The Fury).
It is necessary not to stray from the establish pathways as the gallery ventilation wells remain open and semi-camouflaged by the vegetation, with no warning signs.
From the mines we continue along the base of the ravine until we come to a fork. At this point we must follow the ravine to our left, thus leaving the Hunter´s Ravine (which continues to the right) and which would take us towards the Loma de la Encina (Holm Oak Hillock). Carrying on along this left ravine and about 300m further up, a new fork appears which we must now follow to the right.
Along this ravine we come across a series of "steps" of about 2 to 3 metres height and which will not be difficult to climb. The slope becomes increasingly steep until reaching a point at which the ravine closes up and we can follow it no further.
From here we proceed up a very steep path which veers off to our right between holm oaks. We pass by some caves called Los Caños del Rey (The Jets of the King) where in water deposits are to be found throught almost entire year. At the top of this climb we come across a hill called Ranchillo del Viento (Little Ranch of the Wind) where it would be worthwhile resting in order to contemplate the landscape, as from here the panorama of the surroundings of the Barranco de Cazadores is extraordinary. Also we can make out the peak of the Navachica, the entire range of the Almendrón and to our right a vast forest of adult black pine mixed with holm oak, which looks like a great oasis completely surrounded by rocky mountain ranges. This is the Pinar de Lomas LLanas (Pine Grove of the Plain Hillocks).
To reach the Navachica from here we simply continue up-hill in the direction of the peak. Almost no path ways are distinguishable but due to the absence of brushwood we will have no difficulty in finding our way. Along this path the slope becomes gentler again. By ascending to the peak we will have covered on foot about 18km, and we still have the sae again ahead of us to descend. For this reason it is necessary to set off very early in the morning and follow this route when the days are longer.

HACIA LA CUESTA DEL CIELO.-
Esta ruta se compone de dos tramos muy diferentes La primera, hasta Los Cortijos de la Civila, la subida es fácil y puede hacerse en coche, aunque se va haciendo más difícil cuanto mas subimos. Una vez en la Civila la ruta se hace dura y se continúa a pie hasta la Cuesta del Cielo, un pico de 1.505 m de altitud, muy llamativo por su forma piramidal. La subida es empinada, pero el esfuerzo es recompensado con maravillosas vistas.
Empezamos a pie por un camino en muy mal estado que se inicia junto al Camping de Nerja. Este carril pasa a través de un bosque de pino y lo dejamos cuando podemos ver a nuestra izquierda una casa en ruinas en medio de un claro. A continuación, comenzamos a subir hacia arriba a través de un olivar, manteniendo siempre un muro de piedra a nuestra derecha. Toda esta zona es conocida como Viña de Maro.
Al llegar al último olivo y al lado de un pino grande veremos el camino a seguir por la colina, viendo en la distancia el Cortijo de Juan el Molinero, situado en la parte superior de una colina por la que vamos a pasar. El camino primero serpentea y luego progresivamente sube a la granja desde la que podemos ver Nerja, Maro y el Faro de Torrox. Cruzamos por un bosque de pinos y nos guía a la ruta que lleva a La Civila partiendo desde la Cueva de Nerja.
La Civila es un grupo de casas en la base de una colina y rodeado de albaricoques y almendros. De aquí se sigue hasta la Cuesta del Cielo haciendo otras dos horas de caminata. Seguimos el camino que sube por la ladera conocida como la Cuesta del Cielo. Al llegar a la cima de esta colina se puede ver la vertiente oriental, con una magnífica vista de la costa, en particular, la Punta de la Mona y Cerro Gordo, con la playa de La Herradura, y el fértil valle del Río de la Miel. Justo enfrente se alza el pico llamado La Cabeza del Caballo.
Unos metros más arriba, junto a un árbol seco, la senda se bifurca y se gira a la izquierda siguiendo la ladera de la montaña. Cuando el camino se pierde continuamos a campo traviesa hasta llegar a nuestro objetivo, la cruz que corona la Cuesta del Cielo.
La distancia recorrida desde el camping es de 9 Km.

TO THE CUESTA EL CIELO.-

This route is composed of two very different stretches. With the first, up to Los Cortijos de la Civila (The Farmhouses of La Civila) the ascent is easy and can be made by car, although it gets more difficult the farther on we get. From the farmhouses the route must, by force, be continued on foot until the Cuesta del Cielo (Hill of the Sky), a peak of 1,505m altitude, very striking because of its pyramidal shape. The ascent is steep but the effort is well rewarded with marvellous views.

We start on foot along a lane in very bad condition which begins next to the Camping de Nerja (Nerja Camping Site). This lane passes through a pine grove and we leave it when we can see to our left a ruined house in the middle of a clearing. We then start to climb upwards through an olive grove, always keeping a stone wall to our right. This whole area is known as Viña de Maro (Maro Vineyard).

Upon reaching the last olive tree and next to a large pine we will see the path to follow which borders and peaks the hillock, seeing in the distance the Cortijo de Juan el Molinero (The Farmhouse of Juan the Miller), situated on top of a hill over which we will pass. The path first meanders along half-way up the slope and then progressively climbs upwards to the farmhouse from which we can see Nerja, Maro and the Lighthouse of Torrox. We cross through a pine grove and the path guides us to the final part of the lane which stretches to La Civila from the Cave of Nerja.

La Civila is a group of houses at the base of a hillside surrounded by prickly pear and almond trees. From here to the Cuesta del Cielo there remains a further two hours walk. We follow the path which climbs up the hillside known as the Cuesta del Cielo (Hill of the Sky). Upon reaching the top of this hill we can see the eastern slope, with a magnificent view of the coast, particularly, Punta de la Mona and Cerro Gordo which border the Herradura BEach, and the fertile valley of the Rio de la Miel. Directly in front looms the peak called La Cabeza del Caballo (The Horse´s Head).
A few metres further up, next to a dried-up tree, the path forks and we veer to the left following the side of the mountain. When the path loses itself we continue cross-country until reaching our goal, guiding ourselves towards the mirrored cross which crowns the Cuesta del Cielo.
The distance covered from the camping site is of 9 km.

AL PEÑON DE LOS CASTILLEJOS.-
Este itinerario discurre por el lado oeste del valle fértil de la parte más oriental de nuestra sierra, se utiliza desde hace mucho tiempo para los cultivos tradicionales (vid, olivos, almendros) y más recientemente a los cultivos subtropicales.
Apenas se comienza el ascenso a través de la carretera de la N-340 en el kilómetro 298, el verdor y la frescura de este valle es una sorpresa en comparación con otros paisajes de la sierra Almijara. Decenas de cortijos blancos se dispersan por el valle que nos recuerda la tradicional presencia humana que se remonta a la época romana y ha perdurado hasta nuestros días. Las partes más altas de las montañas tienen una vegetación natural.
Continuamos por la carretera hasta llegar a un carril a nuestra izquierda para llegar a un cartel que indica que el camino en el que estamos está llegando a su fin.
Si estamos interesados en la vegetación de ribera, es posible continuar por la carretera hasta llegar a una rotonda y tomamos un carril que comienza allí y nos lleva cerca del lecho del río. Nosotros sólo podemos río arriba y llegar a la desembocadura actual del río es bastante complicado. Hay zonas donde se han formado pequeñas cascadas, otras donde el río se estrecha y alberga una vegetación más exuberante. Este es el hábitat de la tortuga de agua dulce poco común.
Podemos optar por continuar a pie el resto de la ruta (9 Km.), dejando el vehículo en la rotonda y volver a la pista que se ha indicado anteriormente, y que no está en muy buenas condiciones, sino que también permite el paso de los coches. Vamos a continuar por el carril, dejando a nuestra izquierda y a la derecha otros que conducen a las propiedades privadas, hasta llegar a Los Cortijos del Nacimiento, cortijos que se encuentran cerca de donde el río se origina.
Después de pasar un pequeño arroyo nos encontramos con dos rutas alternativas para el ascenso al Peñón de los Castillejos. Con el primero tomamos un sendero que comienza en la forma de un carril a nuestra izquierda, a través del cual vamos a subir a la roca misma en tres cuartos de hora. Aquí podemos observar cómo la vegetación se recupera de un incendio forestal anterior. La segunda alternativa consiste en continuar por el carril y, al llegar al lado de las montañas, nos desviamos a la izquierda para acceder a la base de la roca, esta vez en su cara este. Desde aquí subimos, guiados por la intuición, a la parte superior de la que podemos contemplar unas maravillosas vistas del Valle del Río de la Miel y de Granada y la costa.
Se cuenta entre los lugareños, que una campana de tamaño normal se encuentró aquí y que, oxidados y desgastados por el paso del tiempo, fue cambiado por baratijas a un vendedor ambulante y que resultó ser de plata.
El retorno a la N-340 se puede hacer tras la pista de tierra, de 9 Km. de longitud, y que nos lleva a la zona de Cantarriján (ver mapa).

TO THE CASTILLEJOS ROCK.-

This itinerary runs along the West side of the fertile valley of the most eastern part of our sierra, made use of since long ago for traditional crops (vines, olives, almonds) and more recently for subtropical crops.
Scarcely begun the ascent via the road off the N-340 at kilometer 298, the verdor and freshness of this valley surprises compared with other Almijara landscapes. Dozens of farmhouses scatter the valley with white reminding us of the traditional human presence which goes back to Roman times and has lasted renewed until our times. The higher parts of the mountains sustain a natural vegetation.
We carry on along the road until we reach and take a lane to our left close to the signpost indicating that the road we are on is coming to an end.
If we are interested in riverside vegetation, it is possible to continue along the road until reaching a rotunda and thecarry on along a lane which commences there and takes us close to the riverbed. We can only go up part of the river as getting to the actual mouth of the river is quite complicated. There are areas where small cascades have formed, others where the river narrows and harbours a more exhuberant vegetation. This is the habitat of the rare freshwater tortoise.
We may choose to continue on foot for the rest of the route (9 km), leaving the vehicle in the rotunda and going back to the lane previously indicated, which is not in very good condition but will also allow for the passage of cars. We will carry on along the lane, leaving to our left and right others which lead to private properties, until reaching Los Cortijos del Nacimiento (The Farmhouses of the Source), so-called as they are situated close to where the river originates.
After passing a small stream we come across two alternative routes for the ascent to the Peñon de los Castillejos (Castillejos Rock). With the first we take a path which begins in the form of a lane on our left, via which we will climb up to the rock itself in three quarters of an hour. Here we can observe how the vegetation recovers from a previous forest fire. The second alternative consists in continuing along the lane and, upon arriving at the side of the mountains, we veer to the left to gain access to the base of the rock, this time on its eastern face. From here we climb, guide by our intuition, to the top from which we can contemplate marvellous views of the Valley of Río de la Miel and of Granada and the coast.
It is told amongst farm hand who live in these places, that a normal sized bell was found here which, rusted and worn by the passage of time, was exchanged for trinkets by a wandering salesman and that it turned out to be made of silver.
The return to the N-340 can be made following the earthen lane, ok 9 km length, which takes us to the area of Cantarriján (see map).

A LA CALA DEL BARRANCO MARO.-
Descripción
Esta cala se encuentra en la desembocadura del Barranco de Maro (Barranco de Maro), conocido más arriba como barranco de La Coladilla - Cazadores...
Se accede por el kilómetro 294 de la N - 340 en dirección a Nerja-Almería, entrando a la antigua carretera nacional inmediatamente antes del comienzo de una curva. A unos 300 metros, giramos a la izquierda antes de pasar el puente, y bajamos a través de un carril en muy mal estado (sólo apto para vehículos 4x4). Desde aquí podemos ver el Acueducto del Águila, todavía en perfecto estado, construido en el siglo XIX para llevar agua a los molinos de la antigua fábrica de azúcar de San Joaquín de Maro.
Al llegar a un apero de labranza, el carril se convierte en un camino rodeado de Cañaveras (especie de caña de bambú) y cultivos subtropicales, que sólo es posible bajar a pie. Debemos continuar por la izquierda hasta llegar a un pequeño edificio y aquí empieza un camino que nos lleva hasta la pequeña cala, bonita y rocosa.
La longitud total del recorrido es de poco más de un kilómetro.
Una alternativa B (marcada en el mapa) sería la de cruzar el puente en lugar de girar a la izquierda, y tomando el carril a la derecha, y llegando a un cruce de caminos donde se pueden dejar los vehículos y caminando un poco disfrutaremos de un panorama maravilloso de los acantilados

TO THE COVE EL BARRANCO MARO.-

This cove is situated at the mouth of the Barranco de Maro (Maro Ravine), know further up as La Coladilla – Cazadores…
Access is gained past Km. 294 of the N – 340 in direction Nerja- Almeria, entering the old national road immediately before the beginning of a bend. Carrying on some 300 metres, we turn to the left before passing the bridge, and go down via a lane in very bad condition (only suitable for 4x4 vehicles). From here we can see the Acueducto del Aguila (Eagle’s Aqueduct), still in perfect conditions, built in the XIXth century to carry water to the mills of the old San Joaquin sugar factory in Maro.
Upon arriving at an Apero (tool shed), the track turns into a pathway surrounded by Cañaveras (sort of bamboo cane) and subtropical crops which it is only possible to descend on foot. We must continue along the left hand side until you reach a small building from which the path that takes us down to the small, rocky and pretty cove begins.
The total length of the route is of little more than one Km.
An alternative (marked B on the map) would be to carry on over the bridge instead of turning to the left, taking the track to the right, arriving at a fork where vehicles can be left and a wonderful panorama of shelves cliffs enjoyed.
