Type 'Find My Phone' in Google to Locate Your Android Phone

Google on Thursday announced users can now simply type 'Find My Phone' in its search box to find their lost or missing Android smartphone.

Google made the announcement on a Google+ post, users would have to simply type 'find my phone' in the Google search bar when logged in with the same Google account as registered on their smartphone. In the search results, they can see the handset last used and Google Maps showing the location of the handset. Users have to have the latest version of the Google app (aka Google Search app) installed on their smartphone for the 'find my phone' command to work.

"If the pesky phone is hiding nearby, Google can ring it for you - or you can see it on the map if you, say, forgot it at the bar. Just make sure you've got the latest version of the Google app!" says the post.
n option to ring the smartphone will also be shown, clicking on which will ring the smartphone on full volume for five minutes. Users can stop the ringing by pressing the handset's power button. We tried both the ring and 'find my phone' features, and found the lost smartphone's GPS also needs to be active, otherwise the new feature will not locate the handset.

Google last month rolled out an update to Android Device Manager that was meant to help users find their lost device via an Android Wear device. The feature can either work with voice command "Ok Google. Start. Find my phone" or by selecting the 'Find my phone' option from the start menu. If your device is mapped with Android Device Manager, it will start ringing at full volume till the time your Android Wear device/ smartwatch is in range (Bluetooth range). The Android Device Manager was introduced in 2013 and essentially allowed locating, resetting and deleting data for Android devices from Web.

Yamaha launches YZF-R1M in India priced at Rs 29.43 Lakhs

Yamaha Motor India Sales today launched its YZF-R1M superbike in the country priced at Rs. 29.43 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

The 998-cc model would be available only on order, the company said in a statement.

It also announced the launch of two colours, Deep purplish blue metallic C and Vivid Red Cocktail 1, for YZF-R1 model.

Yamaha retails the YZF-R1 model in India at Rs. 22.34 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

"The all-new 2015 YZF-R1 and YZF-R1M are based on Yamaha's high-tech-armed pure sport concept of an all-out supersport model fully armed with advanced technology," the company said.

RBI Warns Against 'All Bank Balance Enquiry' App

Cautioning public against a fraudulent bank account mobile app in its name, the Reserve Bank of India on Saturday said it has developed no such application.

The RBI in a statement said it has come to its notice that an app (application) "is doing rounds on WhatsApp purportedly to facilitate checking of balance in customers' bank accounts".

The application has "an RBI logo with the title 'All Bank Balance Enquiry No' and has listed several banks with either a mobile number or call centre number", it further said.

The central bank also said that customers using the platform are doing so at their own risk.

"The Reserve Bank wishes to clarify that it has not developed any such application the RBI said. Members of public are, therefore, advised to use the application, if at all, at their own risk."

TRAI recommends 112 as single emergency number for India

A single number '112' can be used for all emergency phone calls across the country including for police, fire and ambulance, telecom regulator TRAI proposed on Tuesday. Similar to the '911' all-in-one emergency service in the US, government can integrate all existing emergency numbers such as 100, 101, 102 and 108 into the proposed '112' helpline number, TRAI said in its recommendations on emergency number.

"Authority recommends that the number 112 be adopted as the single emergency number for India. This new number may be popularised extensively through a public awareness campaign by the Government," TRAI said.

The regulator suggested existing emergency numbers such as 100, 101, 102 and 108 can be retained as secondary numbers. If any call is made to these numbers, the call should be directed to the new single emergency number 112, TRAI said. People will be able to make calls on 112 from their mobile or landline phones even if their outgoing call facility has been debarred or the service is temporarily suspended.

An SMS-based access to new emergency number, in which telecom operators may be asked to provide location information of the device from where SMS has been sent, can also be provided, the regulator said.

TRAI also recommended setting up of Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) to handle people's call in distress. Under the new system, the regulator has asked government to set up Response Management System under PSAP which will coordinate for despatch of emergency service. The PSAP is suggested to have various systems, including a facility to automatically direct incoming calls to a free call taker and location tracking system having an interface to plot incoming location information on a map showing all nearby landmarks and resources and display on a monitor.

Responding resources like PCR vans, Fire engines and Ambulances should be fitted with GPS to transmit location information to PSAP, it said.

TRAI has recommended that PSAP operators should be able to handle calls in Hindi, English and local languages. Under the new system when an emergency call will be made, PSAP should get access to location of caller automatically from database of telecom operator and immediately direct concerned emergency service, be it police, ambulance or fire brigade to reach the spot, it said.

For this, four regional databases, one each in metro city, containing subscriber details of telecom operators should be set up in the country. These regional databases should be interconnected and each of the telecom operator and PSAPs should be mandated to connect to the nearby regional database centre, it said.

The regulator has recommended that BSNL may be directed to set up or hire and maintain infrastructure (data centre) wherein the subscriber database provided by all telecom operators is installed and updated. BSNL will be responsible for managing the confidential databases and also ensure confidentiality and secrecy of the data, the regulator said.

TRAI has also recommended that access to emergency facility should not be allowed from mobile handsets or devices which do not have a SIM.

Snapdeal Acquires FreeCharge Online Recharge Service

Online marketplace Snapdeal on Wednesday announced that it has acquired FreeCharge, an online recharge company. FreeCharge focuses entirely on recharges - you can only use it to recharge your mobile phone, datacard, or DTH service - and offers customers discount coupons for using the service.

Mobile recharges are a fast growing business in India - in November, Paytm revealed that it was poised to reach $1 billion (approximately Rs. 6,227 crores) in transactions by March 2015, and at that point, 80 percent of its business was coming from mobile recharges - and several companies including RechargeItNow, MobiKwik, and of course Paytm and Freecharge are all operating in this category. According to Snapdeal, 3 million mobile recharges are done online in India, out of a total 75 million recharges that take place every day.

MobiKwik has also announced a fresh series of funding, and an investment of close to $25 million (approximately Rs. 155 crores) from investors including American Express and Sequoia Capital. Unlike FreeCharge, MobiKwik also has a brick and mortar retail network. It claims to have over 100,000 merchants tied up with it, and has also applied to the RBI for a Payments Bank licence.

While the exact details of the Snapdeal-FreeCharge deal were not announced, Economic Times earlier reported that Snapdeal was in talks to buy FreeCharge for $450 million (approximately Rs. 2,800 crores). If that is correct, then the acquisition is bigger than the $300 million (approximately Rs. 1,868 crores) Flipkart-Myntra deal in 2014. The company also claims that with this acquisition, Snapdeal becomes the largest mobile commerce company in India, with a user base of over 40 million people.

"The age of monolithic e-commerce platforms is over," said Kunal Bahl, co-founder and CEO, Snapdeal. "We are building an ecosystem that powers billions of digital commerce transactions in the country in the coming years. With FreeCharge, we have significantly enhanced our user base and now offer all our customers access to the widest selection of products and services online."

The FreeCharge team will be kept on under FreeCharge co-founder and CEO Kunal Shah, the release stated. It will continue to function as an independent platform and all aspects of FreeCharge's shopping experience will remain intact, the release stated.

"FreeCharge is at the forefront of the mobile commerce revolution which is taking place in India right now," said Shah. "We have been ahead of the curve and as a result, 85 percent of our transactions originate from mobile, these transactions have very high repeat customer behavior. The partnership with Snapdeal comes at the right time, I foresee this as an opportunity to accelerate our road map in India and reach out to millions of users across the country."

"As a brand, Snapdeal has a massive recall and we are very excited to be a part of the team that is creating the biggest digital ecosystem of the country," he added.

Aside from FreeCharge and MobiKwik, Paytm also recently received a large investment from the Chinese firm Alibaba. In January, it was reported that Alibaba will buy a $550 million (approximately Rs. 3,427 crores) stake in Paytm's parent company, One97. With large scale investment, it is clear that the payments space is going to become much more competitive in the near future.

HTC launches Desire 826 in India at INR 25,990

HTC India has announced the launch of its Desire 826 smartphone in the Indian market. The phone will go on sale in the coming days with a maximum operating price (MOP) of INR 25,990.

HTC launches a new device One 8s

HTC has launched a new device called HTC One 8s which has a mix of new and revisited features on a midrange handset.

According to CNET, it has a 5-inch screen and curved with metal body. The display comes with a 1920x1080-pixel resolution.

HTC One 8s runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop with version 6.0 of its Sense interface.

One 8s comes with a 13-megapixel duo camera with f/2.0 aperture and 28mm lens. Video recording can be done at 1080p HD. It has a5-megapixel front camera to work with. 1080p HD video recording on that front camera is a nice touch.

Like other HTC phones, the 8s integrates BoomSound dual front-facing speakers that promise loud and clear audio.

HTC One 8s works on a Qualcomm's octa-core Snapdragon 615 presents 64-bit computing through four cores at 1.7GHz and four at 1.0GHz. The One 8s supports quick-charging, for faster battery top-ups. That battery has a 2,840mAh capacity and is rated to 20.25 hours on 3G.

One 8s has internal Storage of 16GB, with 2GB of RAM, but it can support a microSD card of up to 128GB. The One 8s also supports NFC, Bluetooth 4.1 and Wi-Fi.

WhatsApp calling now available to everyone, without invite

Pvt banks to hike fines, charges from April 1

The new financial year will begin with a new set of charges and higher penalties for customers of private banks. Most large private banks — including HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank — have announced a hike in charges ahead of the new rules kicking in for penalty on non-maintenance of minimum average balance in savings accounts. Banks are also introducing charges to nudge customers to use digital channels and move away from physical instruments such as cheques.

In November last year, RBI had asked banks to impose from April 1 a penalty which would be proportionate to the shortfall in minimum balance. Banks are also required to inform the accountholder through email or SMS of imminent charges when the balance requirement is breached. Thirdly, banks are barred from creating negative balances by imposing charges on the grounds that charges will be deducted from future deposits.

"The charge for non-maintenance of average minimum quarterly balance is the most widely applied charge by banks. If there is a reduction in this, it will have a major impact on the bank's bottom line. Earlier, the penalty used to be uniform whether the shortfall was Rs 100 or Rs 4,000. Now with proportional charges, there will be a reduction in overall income which banks are trying to compensate by revising charges," said an official with a private bank.

HDFC Bank has introduced a slab-wise structure for non-maintenance of minimum balance. Under the new norms, the penalty for non-maintenance of balance will range from Rs 150 to Rs 600, depending on the shortfall. It has also increased some fees. For instance, locker rentals in some branches have almost doubled.

Besides this, HDFC Bank has introduced new charges for return of any deliverable (cheque book/PIN) for negative reasons such as consignee shifted/no such address. Requests for re-generation of PIN at branches will attract Rs 50 and if any standing instruction for payment is rejected, there is a Rs 200 penalty.

ICICI Bank has said that it will increase the penalty for non-maintenance of minimum average balance by Rs 100 for urban and metro areas, but has done away with the penalty for rural areas. The bank has also decided to introduce cash deposit charges for notes deposited in cash-accepting machines beyond one deposit every month.

Kotak Mahindra Bank, which revised its service charges from January, has said that from April the penalty for non-maintenance of average quarterly balance would be hiked by Rs 50 for most accounts.

Similarly, Axis Bank too has hiked charges for non-maintenance of minimum balance. For instance, in the domestic prime segment, customers will have to pay a minimum penalty of Rs 350, or Rs 5 per every Rs 100 of the shortfall — whichever is lower. Earlier, the charge was a flat Rs 250 a month.

WhatsApp may soon get free voice calling

NEW YORK: If media reports are to be believed, mobile messaging service WhatsApp is set to launch a free voice calling feature for its 600 million active users.

Recent changes in the interface of the app suggests the feature is coming soon.

"The leaked images of the upcoming user interface shows that the app has been enabled with other language translations which will be displayed at the time a person receives a call via WhatsApp," a report on thefusejoplin.com stated.

The translation feature available in the latest version of WhatsApp has made it clear that the voice calling plug-in is on its way.

While the voice calling feature is all set to be released on WhatsApp, there is no update if there is going to be a similar feature on Facebook, it added.

Facebook-owned WhatsApp has witnessed a 15% rise in its traffic since the acquisition.

WhatsApp has crossed 50 million active users in India alone.

Xiaomi has unveiled its next smartphone Redmi 1s for Rs 5,999 at an event in Delhi. The all new Redmi 1s will go on sale on September 2 and the registrations for the phone will begin at 6PM today. Looks like, Xiaomi along with Flipkart will follow the same flash sale strategy.

In July, Xiaomi had announced that the Redmi 1s will be sold at Rs 6,999 for the Indian market. However, the price has been dropped to 5,999 to further intensify the competition in the budget mobile segment in India. Yamaha launches FZ Version 2.0, FZ-S Version 2.0

Yamaha Motor India Sales on Monday launched two new models in its FZ series.

The new models -- FZ Version 2.0 and FZ-S Version 2.0 -- are mounted with a newly designed air-cooled 149cc 4-stroke, SOHC, single-cylinder fuel-injected engine on a lightweight frame to realize the product concept of a "Sharpened & Power-packed New FZ."

With the launch of these new models targeted at young men between the ages of 18 and 30, the company hopes to see a steep growth in the customer base, especially keeping in mind the mileage conscious target audience.

The FZ Version 2.0 is priced at Rs 76,250 and FZ-S version at Rs 78,250.

Bollywood star John Abraham unveiled the new models in New Delhi. The new FZ Version 2.0 and FZ-S Version 2.0 will be available in the market beginning July 2014.

Google shutting down Orkut social network, to focus on more popular services

Orkut, Google's first social networking site, will cease to exist after September, with the Internet giant deciding to shut down the service launched 10 years ago.

Google said it will shut down Orkut, which is very popular in India and Brazil, on September 30. The service, however, did not do so well in other parts of the world and lost sheen to rivals like Facebook.

Orkut, which popularised posts or "scraps" between friends, did not disclose the number of users on the website. ..

However, according to its website about 50.6 per cent of its users were from Brazil. Another 20.44 per cent came from India, while the US and Pakistan accounted for 17.78 per cent and 0.86 per cent, respectively.

"Over the past decade, YouTube, Blogger and Google+ have taken off, with communities springing up in every corner of the world. Because the growth of these communities has outpaced Orkut's growth, we've decided to bid Orkut farewell," Google said in a post on the Orkut blog ..

Orkut was launched in 2004, the same year when Facebook was founded. Facebook is now the world's largest social network with 1.28 billion users.

Orkut was the result of a "20 per cent project" in which Google workers got to spend a fifth of their time on ideas not necessarily related to their job responsibilities.

Google launched its Google+ social network in 2011 and has been slowly weaving it into other services. While Google+ was positioned to compete with Facebook in the beginning, over the last few years, it has established Google+ as a unified "user identity" system.

In 2010, Facebook overtook Orkut as the top social networking site in India with 20.9 million visitors in July that year compared to Orkut's 16 per cent growth with 19.9 million visitors, according to research firm comScore.

Google said it would preserve an archive of all Orkut communities that will be available from September 30.

"If you don't want your posts or name to be included in the community archive, you can remove Orkut permanently from your Google account," Google said.

Flipkart launches its 1st tablet Digiflip Pro XT712 at 9,999

Indian e-retail giant Flipkart on Thursday unveiled its first Android tablet under the Digiflip brand in the country. Priced at INR 9,999, the tablet is targeted to the entry-level buyers.

Dubbed as Digiflip Pro XT712, the tablet sports a 7-inch 1280x800p IPS HD display and is powered by 1.3GHz MediaTek quad-core processor. It also features 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, microSD card slot, 5MP rear camera, 2MP front camera, 3G connectivity and dual-SIM support.

According to Flipkart, the Digiflip Pro XT712 runs on Android 4.2.2 and it will be getting Android updates in future but the company has not specified any timelines.

HTC Desire 516 goes on sale online for Rs. 13,300 in India

HTC has taken an unusual sales route and the handset is already available for sale at online retailer ebay.in. It was just on Tuesday that the budget handset was spotted on the Zauba import records and clearly we were a bit too late, since the handsets were all set to go on sale on Wednesday.

The HTC Desire 516 features a 5 inch qHD (960 x 540 pixel) display that is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 200, quad-core chipset clocked at 1.2 GHz and coupled with 1 GB of RAM.

Also included is 4 GB of internal storage which is expandable via a micro SD card slot. On the outside you will find a 5 MP primary camera unit with an LED flash and a generous 2MP snapper up front. The handset runs Android Jelly Bean 4.2 and is powered by a sufficient 1950 mAh battery unit which seems a bit less considering the handset’s dual SIM capabilities.

Apple launches cheapest iMac

Apple has launched a cheaper iMac, aimed at boosting sales as tablets eat up the market share. The new model has a slower processor, lesser storage space and lower-end graphics, but is Rs 13,000 cheaper than the current iMacs.

The new iMac has a 21.5-inch Full HD screen with dual-core 1.4GHz Intel i5 processor, 8GB RAM, 500GB hard disk and Intel HD Graphics 5000 as standard configuration, priced at Rs 79,900 in India (US pricing is $1099). Buyers can also choose 1TB SATA, 1TB Fusion Drive or 256SSD storage options, which raise the price. Connectivity options of the new iMac include 802.11ac Wi-Fi connectivity, four USB 3.0 ports, two Thunderbolt ports and Bluetooth 4.0 and SDXC card slot.

This new model has been positioned as the new base model for the iMac lineup and will sell alongside the iMacs that were launched last year.

Apple will start shipping orders for the new iMac from today itself, with delivery time of 24 hours.
