Former Manchester United defender Gordon McQueen says Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been “very poor” for Jose Mourinho’s men this season and thinks the striker is struggling to deal with the “pace and intensity” of the Premier League.
Ibrahimovic was part of the Red Devils line-up that crashed to a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
It was Mourinho’s first return to Chelsea since his sacking last season and the loss leaves United six points behind leaders Manchester City in seventh place.
McQueen, who made 184 appearances for United over seven years at Old Trafford, thinks Zlatan Ibrahimovic “is not good enough” to play for the club and is partly responsible for their poor form.
“Ibrahimovic has done nothing so far and looks very poor. He looks like an old man playing football,” he said.
“He might have got 50-odd goals in France last season, but it’s an inferior league to the Premier League and he is proving it this season.
“There is nothing like our league for pace and intensity, and he is finding it out the hard way.
“Of course, it would help if he got some good crosses from the wings, but he’s not making the most of the chances he does get and doesn’t seem able to find that yard of space where it really counts.
“It is not a lack of effort, I wouldn’t accuse any Manchester United of that, I just think he is not good enough, it’s as simple as that.
“There is no chance of him getting 30 goals this season. He will do well to reach double figures the way things are going.
“He scored a few at the start of the season, but it’s gone quiet for him and he isn’t able to bully Premier League defences as he could in France and elsewhere.”

Despite his damning verdict on the 35-year-old, McQueen thinks United have broader issues than just the Swedish striker and their defence.
“It is not just the defence, it is the whole team. They are a million miles away from being a good team,” he added.
“They went a stupid goal behind after 30 seconds and it spooked them. They never recovered their composure after that.
“United teams of old would have regrouped, but this lot are not good enough to do it.
“It is a shadow of the defence that had Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic at its core. He brought in Eric Bailly, who has done okay, but no better than that. Mourinho can’t trust a settled defence because he doesn’t have reliable defenders who can do a job week in, week out.
“All Mourinho can do is hope that he can stay in touch with the leaders. What we’ve seen so far that might be a big ask.”

No deal on Syria as Obama and Putin meet

Hangzhou, China (Extra Knowledge)US President Barack Obama and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin met Monday as talks between their governments on ending violence in Syria ended without an agreement.

The two leaders conversed on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit here for ninety minutes, a senior US official said, and worked to clarify gaps in negotiations over on the Syrian crisis. The pair also discussed Ukraine and Russia's cyber intrusions, the official said.

The exchange came after talks between Secretary of State John Kerry and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov failed to result in a Syria ceasefire agreement. They had been working to negotiate a plan that would have boosted military cooperation between the two nations in an effort to better target terrorists and prevent civilian deaths.

Negotiators failed to work though differences, and the talks have ended for now. Following Obama's meeting with Putin, an official said the leaders indicated a desire for Kerry and Lavrov to reconvene deliberations in the coming days.

"There are still issues to resolve," one US official said. Differences between the two sides are technical, another official indicated, suggesting the divide was at a level that Obama and Putin wouldn't negotiate themselves.

Photos of the session distributed by the Kremlin show the two leaders and aides, including Kerry and US National Security Adviser Susan Rice, seated around a table. The presidents appeared in congenial moods, with one photo showing Putin smiling broadly.

Both Russian and US officials said the meeting -- which was held in a conference room at the G20 summit site here -- lasted longer than planned, and that leaders spent the bulk of their meeting discussing Syria.

Cautious optimism

On Sunday, cautious optimism prevailed that a deal could be struck between Washington and Moscow, long at odds over policy in Syria. Kerry and Lavrov had been working "around the clock" to come to an agreement, Obama told reporters.

Russian forces have aligned with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to target US-backed opposition fighters that Moscow and Damascus claim are terrorists. The campaign has spurred a humanitarian crisis and caused millions of Syrians to flee for Europe.

The US hopes to align with Russia to identify terrorist targets, including ISIS and the Nusra Front, a group formerly tied to al-Qaeda. Officials hope a ceasefire will help advance talks on a political transition that would lead to the resignation of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad.

Any deal to end widespread suffering in Syria was likely to be met with doubt after past settlements, including a ceasefire agreed to in February, failed -- a fact Obama acknowledged on Sunday.

Why Obama shouldn't expect much from the G20

"Given the failure of previous cessations of hostilities to hold, we approach it with some skepticism," Obama said.

But he insisted any work toward easing the deeply troubling humanitarian crisis was valuable.

"It is worth trying," he said. "To the extent that there are children and women and innocent civilians who can get food and medical supplies and, you know, get some relief from the constant terror of bombings, that's worth the effort."

Putin's persistent support for the Syrian regime, Moscow's moves in Ukraine and the charge that Russia may be meddling in the US presidential contest have built a deeply antagonistic dynamic between the two leaders.

Obama said on Sunday that Russian participation was essential.

"Our conversations with the Russians are key because, if it were not for the Russians, then Assad and the regime would not be able to sustain its offensive," he said.

What thoughts come into your head when you think back to the Under 18s here, winning the Youth Cup and breaking into the first team?
When I first came, I remember when I was at school at the academy. They used to come and drop us. I had this picture of my training. I saw Warren Joyce, I always remember the training I had with him, the changing room, the canteen where we eat, just the same and I was thinking about it before. It’s like a picture, I had my picture… it’s just something I cannot explain, it’s crazy. I just feel happy. There’s no words, to be honest, there’s no words. Just happiness. And I just can’t wait to start playing with my new team. It doesn’t look like it’s my new team, it’s just like I left this team and now I’ve come back. It’s just a great feeling to be honest.
We’ve missed you here on MUTV – we enjoyed having you here the first time. How did your experiences of being on MUTV regularly set up you?
I started on MUTV. My first interview was here at United. So now I come back and feel like I’m doing my old interview – I’m just taller, bigger, older. And I’m just enjoying it.
You’re signing for a very successful manager with a big personality, so how important was he in your decision to come here?
First of all, I spoke with a lot of players [who played under him] when he was at Madrid – I spoke with [Alvaro] Morata, [Raphael] Varane – and they all told me he’s the coach for me; he will make me improve a lot and make me work harder. I feel this. I spoke with him a few times and he gave me energy, he gave me positivity. So I was thinking ‘why not?’ I’m sure he can make me improve and make me a better player and a better person.
It’s been a big journey for you over the last six or seven years but you’re still very young in a footballing sense, so what do you feel you can you achieve in your career?
First of all, win the league for the first time with United, because I hadn’t won the league when I left. The Champions League, of course, and personally, one of my dreams is to win the Ballon d’Or. That will come with time hopefully but first the Premier League – I’ve never done it.
This move means you’re reunited with people like Jesse Lingard, who you played with in the FA Youth Cup-winning team. Have you kept in touch with those guys?
Always we kept talking – I’ve just kept in touch with him. I’m very happy for him and what he’s doing, very proud of him, because he just keeps it up. I know he went on loan, he came back, he went on loan again, but it was just Jesse Lingard scoring goals, as always. So I’m very happy for him. I see Sam Johnstone too, and Will Keane and some other players who went away. We just keep in touch and I’m very happy for them.
The fans are excited to have you here, so do you have a message for them?
I’m back and I can’t wait to make them happy, to show them that I’m still Paul Pogba but in a different way, and that I came here not to joke but to make them happy and feel like we can win the league. That’s why I came here.

Paul, welcome back to Manchester United. How do you sum up your emotions right now?
There’s no words, to be honest, there’s no words. I just came back to Carrington. It was like I’d just come back home. I just went for a holiday, looks like I went for a holiday. I’ve come back home, I’m happy and I see everyone, the same persons. It’s just a great feeling, to be honest.
I suppose it’s a funny question after what you’ve just said but why are you back here at United? What made you come back?
I think it’s destiny, I would say it’s destiny. First my mum told me I would come back here and I told her, ‘You never know, you’ll see.’ For myself as well it’s a big challenge too, just to come back to where I came from, where I grew up, where I started. I didn’t finish what I started here so I think I came here to finish it.
And of course, you have to listen to your mum…
My mum, she says ‘Your mum’s always right.’ So she was right this time, so it’s good.
And how does it feel to be the world’s most expensive footballer? That’s quite an achievement with all that you’ve already achieved on the pitch…
The thing with me is I only think about the pitch. I want to do great, I want to be one of the best, I want to win titles, I want to achieve things and that’s all; that’s why I came here, just to do this, to become one of the best and to win titles because I know this club has to win titles. This club is created to win titles, to win things, to win big things. I just focus on this and that’s it. I’m just ready to go and work on that and just kill it. (smiles)
Has it been a mad summer for you, playing in the Euros at home for France and then being linked with different clubs?
Yeah. Was there a bit of sadness? Of course, because we lost the final at home. But I will say I’m happy. It was a bad thing for a good thing so I’m happy now. I’m back home and it’s something crazy, it’s really crazy, I cannot explain. I’m very, very happy, the feeling I have in my body. I can’t wait to start.
What’s it like being Paul Pogba now, compared to when you were here at 18 or 19, in this indoor arena at the Academy?
Well, I was younger. Now I’m taller and bigger (laughs). It’s just like… as I told you… it looks like I went for a holiday and I came back home. I was meant to come back here. I feel this. I always had this United thing in my heart and that’s why I came back. I’m happy, just happy.
How have you changed as a player since you were here at United the first time around? What have you learned about your game, about yourself? How are you different?
I’m more experienced, I’ve won titles at Juventus. I’ve been playing with big players like when I started at Man United, of course. I came back. I’ve not come back from the Academy now; I went to play somewhere else and I came back, I would say, as a person, as an adult. I would say with experience, with more games, so I think that’s the difference.

Earlier yesterday, the Miss World contestants were given the chance to explore more of Sanya’s rich culture and one-of-a-kind biodiversity with a breathtaking trip to the Sanya Orchid Exhibition and Sanya Cultural Industry Fair.

In spite of an early start, the contestants immediately beamed as they saw the sight of hundreds of colourful orchid leis welcoming them upon their arrival to the Orchid exhibition.

Miss Northern Ireland, who could not control her excitement at seeing the stunning and plentiful garland of flowers waiting to greet her said, “In China, orchids represent the inner and outer of beauty of women so I think it’s a perfect fit for us Miss World contestants to be here and celebrating this unique flower!”

As a special gift from local floral artisans, each Miss World contestant was presented with a handmade orchid crown, varying in colours and designs, for them to wear. Each crown was inspired by the beauty and femininity of the contestants, and the attention to detail and savoire faire that went into each headpiece was so unbelievable that, dare we say, our contestants, who later showcased the pieces on stage, looked like supermodels straight out of the most extravagant fashion show during Fashion Week!

“I feel like a princess”, said Miss Ethiopia. “I don’t think I have ever felt this beautiful. I am definitely considering getting one of these crowns for my wedding one day!”

Miss Albania, who took countless selfies with her headpiece, said “There is something so special about these crowns. It’s like Miss World wants us to feel like we are all winners.”

It will begin airing on September 23, 2015, in the United States on Fox.This season will be produced by 20th Century Fox Television, in association with Imagine Entertainment, Lee Daniels Entertainment, Danny Strong Productions and Little Chicken Inc. The second season will have ten roles receiving star billing, with seven of them returning from the previous season, in addition to three characters upgraded from the first season. Terrence Howard will portray Lucious Lyon, a former drug dealer turned hip hop mogul and the CEO of Empire Entertainment who now is imprisoned. Taraji P. Henson will play Cookie Lyon, Lucious' outspoken ex-wife and mother of his three sons, who served 17 years in prison, and have now made a hostile takeover for Empire Entertainment with Anika, Andre and Hakeem. Lucious and Cookie have three sons: Andre Lyon, the eldest son of the Lyon family and CFO of Empire Entertainment who will be played by Trai Byers, and will deal with his wife killing Uncle Vernon in the previous season finale. Jussie Smollett will play Jamal Lyon, the middle son and "black sheep" of the Lyon family, a talented, gay singer-songwriter who has been given control over Empire from his father, Lucious. Bryshere Y. Gray will portray Hakeem Lyon, the fame-obsessed youngest son and Lucious' favorite child, who is a hip hop star on the rise and has been included in the hostile takeover with his mother, Anika and Andre.
Other series regulars returning are Grace Gealey, who will reprise her character Anika Calhoun, former head of Empire Entertainment A&R and Lucious' ex fiancée who has worked together with Cookie replace the acting board of directors at Empire. Kaitlin Doubleday will play Rhonda Lyon, Andre's power-hungry and money-obsessed wife who must deal with killing Uncle Vernon in order to protect Andre. In addition, Ta'Rhonda Jones, Gabourey Sidibe and Serayah McNeill were upgraded to series regulars after being billed as recurring characters during season one. They will be playing their respective roles as Porsha Taylor, personal assistant to Cookie, Becky Williams, executive assistant to Lucious at Empire Entertainment and Tiana Brown, a R&B-pop artist signed to Empire Entertainment, respectively.^[6]^[7]
Chris Rock, Lenny Kravitz and Alicia Keys will guest star as themselves,^[1] while Adam Rodriguez will recur as Laz Delgado, a smooth promoter and a potential love interest for Cookie.^[11] On June 11, 2015, it was announced that the producers were casting the new breakout role of Betty Barz, a “moody, outspoken” teenage rapper who will first appear in the season premiere. Description of the character was that she was an African-American, “unapologetically butch,” and something of a hometown hero in her “Brownsville-Never-Ran-Never-Will, Brooklyn” neighborhood.^[27]
On June 26, 2015, it was announced that Tyra Ferrell was cast as a lawyer who will be in contact with the Lyon family.^[13] It was announced on July 2, 2015, that Marisa Tomei was cast as Mimi Whiteman, a demanding venture capitalist who becomes embroiled in Lyon family drama.^[9] Kelly Rowland was reported on July 6, 2015, to have joined the cast as Lucious Lyon's mother in flashbacks.^[21] On July 17, 2015, TVLine reported that Andre Royo will join the cast as Thirsty Rawlings, a sharp lawyer who will defend Lucious.^[8] Bryshere Y. Gray was the one to announce that Becky G will join the cast in a guest-starring role in the second season as Valentina.^[16] It was announced on July 14, 2015, that Hakeem will have a new love interest whose name is Laura, a serious talented vocalist.^[23]
On August 3, 2015, it was revealed that Adam Busch has signed on for a multi-episode recurring arc, playing Chase One, a sexy, gifted, avant-garde gay artist who’s doing a photo shoot, and is infatuated with his male star,^[10] while Jamila Velazquez, Raquel Castro and newcomer Yani Marin will play unconfirmed recurring roles.^[16] It was announced on August 5, 2015, that Mariah Carey will guest star in one of the upcoming episodes in a top-secret role.^[22] One day later, on August 6, 2015, it was also confirmed that Pitbull would appear as himself.^[20] Al Sharpton and Andre Leon Talley will appear as themselves, and will appear in the season premiere as they will show their support for the embattled music CEO at an epic, outdoor “Free Lucious” concert.^[19] On August 21, it was announced that Mo McRae was cast as J-Poppa, a love interest for Gabourey Sidibe's character Becky, which will appear in three episodes.^[18] On September 14, 2015, it was announced Rafael de La Fuente would return portraying the role of Michael in at least four episodes of the season.^[28]

Production

Empire was renewed for a second season on January 17, 2015, by Fox after only two episodes had aired.^[3] It was announced to contain 18 episodes, which will be split into two parts with ten episodes airing in the fall, and the remaining eight episodes will air after the Christmas break, beginning in January.^[29] The second season will begin airing on September 23, 2015, in the same timeslot as the previous season on Wednesdays 9:00 pm ET timeslot. Filming began on June 23, 2015, as confirmed by Fox, in addition to Chris Rock being spotted on set.

De Gea signs new contract at Manchester United

Manchester United have announced that goalkeeper David de Gea has signed a new four-year contract with the option of an extra year.
De Gea was said to be “distraught” over the collapse of a £29million deadline-day move to join Real Madrid but the 24-year-old has now committed to a new deal with United.
The Spain stopper told the club’s official website: “I am delighted to be starting this new chapter in my United career.
“I have always enjoyed playing with these great players in front of our fantastic fans. Manchester United is a special club and Old Trafford is an ideal place for me to continue to develop my career. I’m looking forward to putting a difficult summer behind me and concentrating on working hard to improve and help my team-mates to be successful.”
Senior figures at Old Trafford said earlier this summer that they had given up hope of De Gea staying at the club, but he has now performed a remarkable U-turn that will please manager Louis van Gaal and the club’s fans immensely.
Van Gaal said: “He’s one of the best keepers in the world. I’m very pleased he will be part of the team for many years to come.”

De Gea’s agent Jorge Mendes and members of the goalkeeper’s family were spotted going into the club’s training ground in Carrington on Thursday for talks. Van Gaal left De Gea out of his team for the first six games of the season because he said he felt the two-time player of the year was not able to focus due to Madrid’s interest in him.
De Gea played for Spain in their midweek Euro 2016 qualifier against Macedonia, but it remains to be seen whether the 24-year-old will feature for United in Saturday’s home game against Liverpool.

Martial, 19, became the world’s most expensive teenager when he joined United in a surprise £36million switch from Monaco on deadline day.
That fee could rise to an eye-watering £58million depending on add-ons, including the France striker winning the Ballon d’Or award.
Martial is uncapped at senior international level but, addressing a packed news conference at Clairefontaine ahead of his country’s friendly against Portugal on Friday, admitted his family were a “little nervous” about the money involved.
However, the striker insists he’s more than ready to prove himself a hit at Old Trafford – and hopes to learn from Wayne Rooney.
“I don’t know if I am worth 80m euros but I don’t worry about the sums,” said the Frenchman.
“I’m going there for the football side of things – the price is between the two clubs and I don’t see myself under any pressure.
“My family were really happy for me that I am going to such a big club. They were definitely a bit nervous given my high price but I am going to stay focused on proving my worth.”

Martial has scored 15 goals in 70 appearances for Monaco and linked up with the national side for the first time this week. He scored four times in 12 games for the France Under-21 side.
However, he said he believes his style of football will be suited to the Premier League and does not expect to encounter problems adapting to the English game under new manager Louis van Gaal.
“Since I was young, people have told me I have the right characteristics to play in England. I’m really keen to develop my game in the English league and prove my worth.
“He (van Gaal) asked me my preferred position – I’d prefer to play in the centre. He told me I could play in a number of positions. It’s the coach who decides but whatever position I’ll do the best I can.”
When questioned about claim’s Rooney did not know who he was, Martial added: “”It’s normal he doesn’t know me. I’ve played a lot in Ligue 1 but I’m happy to go there. He’s a big player and next to him I’ll improve my game a lot.”
Martial could make his debut for United against Liverpool in the Premier League on 12 September.

Mata: De Gea ready to play for United again

Juan Mata insists David De Gea’s “hunger and professionalism remains intact” – and insists the goalkeeper is willing to play for Manchester United again despite the breakdown of his move to Real Madrid.

The 24-year-old saw a move to the Bernabeu collapse on Monday evening after a admin error meant the paperwork on the deal wasn’t completed in time.
The summer-long saga looked like it was due to reach a conclusion after Real agreed to pay United £18million and send £11million-rated Kaylor Navas the other way.
But the failure to get the deal over the line meant the player will remain at Old Trafford until January at least.
But Mata, who is currently on international duty with De Gea for Spain’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Slovakia on Saturday, insists the goalkeeper remains focused on doing a job for club and country.

“His hunger and professionalism are intact,” said Mata. “He seems the same as ever to me, calm and relaxed.
“It’s been a manic few days for him, he’s my friend and I’m there for him for whatever he needs. Right now he’s focused on the two upcoming games for the national team; being here will do him good and he’s going to be as professional as he has been throughout his career.
“His personality will help him. He manages to play even better in moments of maximum pressure and stress. His personality will help him on and off the pitch.
“We all know what a great goalkeeper he is and he would make any team in the world better. The fans will get behind him and so will the team.”
United winger Ashley Young told BBC Sport everyone would be “pulling in the right direction” when they returned after the international break.
And on De Gea, player of the year at Old Trafford for the past two seasons, he added: “He is a professional player, always has been, always will be.”
De Gea is one of three keepers picked for United’s Champions League campaign by boss Louis van Gaal. Argentina international Sergio Romero – who has been starting United’s recent games in place of De Gea – and youngster Sam Johnstone are also included.
However, former Barcelona man Victor Valdes is not included as he continues to be frozen out by Van Gaal after the Dutchman claimed the keeper refused to play in a reserve game.
Earlier, Spain boss Vicente del Bosque said De Gea’s Euro 2016 finals spot would be at risk if he does not feature for his club side this season.
He told Spanish radio: “If he doesn’t play it will be very difficult for him to come.”
De Gea has made five appearances for Spain and Porto’s Iker Casillas – who has 162 caps and left Real Madrid in the summer – remains first choice.
He has linked up with the squad for Euro 2016 qualifiers against Slovakia and Macedonia, while United and Real argue over responsibility for the failed transfer.
“He needs to be professional and move on from this episode. I hope that he starts playing again and is happy, and if he plays well we can bring him along,” Del Bosque added.

United name De Gea in Champions League squad

David de Gea has been handed a possible route back into first-team contention at Manchester United after being named in their 25-man squad for the Champions League.
The Spanish goalkeeper was on the verge of completing a move to Madrid until paperwork problems meant the move was unable to be finalised before Spain’s transfer deadline at 11pm on Monday.
De Gea has yet to play for United this season, with the club instead selecting Argentinian Sergio Romero, but his inclusion in their Champions League squad is an indication that Louis van Gaal will welcome the Spanish stopper back into the fold.
De Gea’s Spain team-mate Juan Mata also insists the keeper is ready to play again for United in a further hint at a thawing of relations.
While there was good news for De Gea, there was no place in the squad for compatriot Victor Valdes as he continues to be frozen out by Van Gaal.
The former Barcelona goalkeeper was close to a move to Turkish club Besiktas last week but that move fell through and his prospects of earning playing time this season appear bleak.
Romero, who has deputised for De Gea while the Madrid saga rumbled on, and Sam Johnstone are the other two goalkeepers in the squad.
Elsewhere, youngsters Guillermo Varela, Nick Powell, Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira were all included while new signing Anthony Martial is listed in the forwards alongside Wayne Rooney, Memphis Depay, Juan Mata and James Wilson.

Rafael leaves Man Utd to sign for Lyon

Rafael Da Silva has signed for French club Lyon on a four-year contract after paying Manchester United a fee reported to be £2.5million.

The French side announced the signing of the Brazilian full-back following a medical on Monday.

He had one-year left on his contract at Old Trafford but was told he was not part of manager Louis van Gaal’s first-team plans this season following the arrival of Italian Matteo Darmian.

A statement on Lyon's website read: "Olympique Lyonnais informs of an agreement with Manchester United for the transfer of Brazilian international Rafael Da Silva, who will sign in the coming days a four-year contract with OL, ie until June 30, 2019."

Reports in France suggested the club will pay up to £2.5 million for the three-time Premier League winner.

Rafael, who joined United in 2008 from Fluminense, made just 11 appearances last season.

The defender established himself as a first-team regular under Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes, but Van Gaal often overlooked him in favour of Antonio Valencia.

He made 96 Premier League appearances in total for the Red Devils, scoring five goals.

His twin brother Fabio left United in January 2014 to join Cardiff City.

Beyoncé is already a superhero to the BeyHive, and she might be taking her powers to the silver screen for a new Avengers movie. That is, if the report from a Britian’s “most successful newspaper,” is actually true.

According to The Daily Star, producers believe Bey “could add millions” to the multi-billion dollar movie franchise (that’s a no brainer). “We would love to have Beyoncé on board, almost certainly as a newcomer to the screen from Marvel's existing catalog of comic book characters,” a senior executive at Disney allegedly said.

Marvel will release The Avengers: Infinity War flicks in 2016 and 2018. Mrs. Carter is reportedly being considered for several different Marvel characters including Boom-Boom, the alter-ego of secret agent Tabitha Smith, who uses mind power to create plasma bombs; Blink, a superheroine who can teleport anywhere; and Tigra, a “cat-like crime fighter” with superhuman strength. Another supposed choice is Hawkeye, a male character who is a master at archery, and was originally played by Jeremy Renner. Maybe producers want to switch it up and turn him into a female in Bey’s honor?

Other than the Daily Star’s “exclusive” report, there’s no real proof that the 33-year-old is actually joining anAvengers flick. But let’s face it, we’d all love to see Super Bey share screen time with Scarlett Johansson,Robert Downey Jr., and the rest of the Avengers' crew.

Time will tell.

BlackBerry is reportedly planning a switch to Android

BlackBerry may release an Android smartphone this fall.

BlackBerry is considering a new smartphone that will run Google's Android operating system in a bid to win back customers it ceded to the iPhone and Android smartphones, Reuters reports. BlackBerry's existing devices currently run its own BlackBerry 10 operating system.

The Android-powered smartphone, which will reportedly launch this fall, will sport a slider form factor with a QWERTY keyboard hidden underneath a la BlackBerry's previous Torch. It's unclear if the device is the same slider device the company teased at Mobile World Conference earlier this year.

Switching over to Android would give BlackBerry users access to Google's massive ecosystem of apps;

BlackBerry 10's weakness has always been its lack of apps. Recent BlackBerrys like the Passport and Classic support the Amazon Appstore's Android apps, but the selection there still pales in comparison to what Google has in its Play Store.

"Android is part of BlackBerry's strategy to pivot to focus on software and device management," the report states. Releasing an Android device is a vote of confidence in the company's BES12 device management system used by enterprises and government to manage devices on a many different operating systems including Android, iOS and Windows.

With less than 1% of the smartphone market share, trying something new might not be a bad idea for BlackBerry.

Watch this Boeing 787 Dreamliner's stunning near-vertical takeoff

From the moment of takeoff, the 787 Dreamliner in this Boeing video of a rehearsal for the Paris Air Show is out to make an impression.

And it succeeds.
The jet takes off at an angle that would make even frequent fliers nervous, then continues on a path that is anything but typical for a commercial flight.

Boeing will be showing off its 787 Dreamliner at the 51st Paris Air Show, which runs for a week beginning Monday at Le Bourget Airport.

Although the Dreamliner has caused repeated headaches for Boeing — the FAA grounded all of the aircraft for a period in 2013, and a computer glitch was recently discovered to be capable of shutting down both engines — it remains a showpiece for the manufacturer.

The video, above, received a largely positive reception online.

But not everyone was impressed by the 787's maneuvering capability.

Wednesday's CMT Awards — if you don't know what this award show is then don't even bother — decided to spice up its more than two-hour run with a bizarre Uber parody (promoting "Gruuber"), which featured Arnold Schwarzenegger, Justin Bieber, Steven Tyler, Tom Arnold and James Corden, to name just a few.

What do all of these famous people have in common? They are not country music artists — hence our bewilderment at spotting them during the CMTs. (The Biebs did admit to being a Luke Bryan fan, though.)

But it's best not to rationalize these things and just chalk it up to celebrities doing anything that pays well.

iOS 9 and OS X El Capitan: The little features we can't wait to use

At Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) on Monday, the company unveiled major new mobile and desktop operating system features that will change how you use your devices. Among those features were things like Proactive, which will surface information and perform actions for you before you even need it, and built-in transit directions to let you know which train to grab, and when.

But littered throughout the headline features are a number of little changes that could turn out to be very important to your work flow. These are all the little nuggets of gold you'll grow to love in iOS 9 and OS X El Capitan.

iOS 9

iCloud Drive app

iOS 9 has a secret iCloud Drive app that users must enable in the settings to use, according to9to5Mac. It's essentially a browser for all the files you keep in iCloud Drive, which could make it easier to organize or share those files. Apple has long tried to get rid of the traditional file structure system. But with an iCloud Drive app buried in the next version of iOS, Apple is acknowledging that making those files accessible is the right solution for some users.

Smaller apps

If you have a 16 or even an 8 gigabyte iPhone, you're going to love this. Apple is changing the way its devices download apps. Previously, an iPhone would download all the properties associated with a given app, according to Ars Technica. App Slicing will now let developers tag the properties associated with each device, so your phone downloads only what it needs, thus saving you a little more hard drive space.

Document picker in Mail

If you're all-in on Apple's ecosystem, a native document picker that lets you attach files to email is huge. Previously, you'd have to go to the file you want to attach, say, a Pages document, and use the share sheet to send it via email. That meant you couldn't attach documents to a reply email, or attach more than one document. This new feature wasn't announced at the keynote, but Apple's iOS 9 preview on its website shows an iPad with the mail app open and a clip icon on the right-hand side.

Seeing subway entrances and exits in Maps

If you zoom in enough on a train station, you'll now see symbols designating where to enter and exit. So all you recent New York City transplants can commute like the pros and leave at the exit closest to your destination. This is something even Google Maps on iOS doesn't have, and should make city living more efficient.

Photo scrubber in Photos

People love browsing through photos. But it's annoying to have to toggle between a full-screen view, and a grid view with all your images. A tiny row of images beneath full-screen views of photos will now let you scrub back and forth through the album, thus making photo reviewing much easier.

Shift key fix in the keyboard

Pull out your iPhone and bring up the keyboard. Press the shift key. Is it on or off? Don't know? Yeah. Me neither. Apple's shift key has been a mystery since iOS 7 debuted in 2013. But now, with iOS 9, the keys appear as lower-case when the shift key is off, and all-caps when the shift key is on, says 9to5Mac. Mystery solved.

Low Power Mode

Let's say you're getting out of work, your phone is at 25% battery life, and you and your buddies have a long night ahead. Your phone might not make it past happy hour. But a new low power mode will help you squeeze out that last bit of battery life. It does this by turning down the brightness, and disabling background updates. It also slows down your cellular connection. Apple says you'll get about three more hours of battery life than normal. Your phone might just make the cab ride home.

OS X El Capitan

Split View

This feature is straight out of Windows, and it's a welcome addition. Working with apps side-by-side on a Mac right now means you have to manually resize each window. But in the updated OS, holding down the green button in the top-right corner of a window will give you the option of automatically fitting the window into the left or right side of the screen. You can fit another app on the other side, and work on both at once.

Big Cursor

This only got a few seconds of screen time, but it's going to be very handy. Computers can get messy, and the UI can get confusing. Losing the mouse can happen more times than people like to admit. But with just a few wiggles, the mouse gets comically large, making it easy to spot.

Extensions for the Photos app

These days, a lot of casual photo editing happens on the iPhone. Apple's recently released Photos app isn't for pros, but it's a slick, simple app for most people to manage their photos on a desktop. New extensions could take it even further. They allow you to use third-party photo editing tools — like applying a VSCOcam filter — within the Photos app.

There are plenty more features coming in both operating systems, but these are the nips and tucks coming to your Apple gadgets that will enhance your experience and make your life a little easier.

Sorry Android users, there's no free Apple Music option for you

Android users who plan to sign up for Apple Music will have to pay up.

Unlike on iOS, Mac and PC, where there's a free membership option (with Apple ID login) with extremely limited features, there will be no such thing for Android users.

Free membership only includes access to four features: Artist feeds on Connect, the ability to follow artists on Connect, Beats 1 radio station and Apple Music radio stations with six skips.

To get the most out of Apple Music, however, you need to step up to the $9.99 per month membership tier, which gives you access to over 30 million streaming songs, unlimited skipping, offline listening, access to Beats 1 radio stations, Apple Music radio stations and Connect social integration.

It sucks, but Apple Music users on Android will only be able to sign up for the paid membership option. That's a blow to Android users, for sure. The move is yet another way that Apple is trying to get Android users to switch to iPhones.

Apple Music will go live on June 30 for iOS, Mac and PC users. Apple TV and Android users will have to wait until this fall.

Apple, Google and Facebook warn Obama to stay out of America's smartphones

The world's largest technology companies have a message for U.S. President Obama: don't mess with smartphones.

Two technology organizations representing Apple, Facebook, Google, Twitter and other notable businesses sent a letter to Obama on Tuesday urging his administration not to pursue any policies that would weaken existing encryption measures for fear of undermining the security of users.

"We are opposed to any policy actions or measures that would undermine encryption as an available and effective tool," the Information Technology Industry Council and the Software & Information Industry Association wrote in the joint letter.

"Doing so would compromise the security of ICT [information and communications technology] products and services, rendering them more vulnerable to attacks and would erode consumers’ trust in the products and services they rely on for protecting their information."

In recent months, Obama has suggested that there may be a need for a workaround to strong encryption on personal devices in certain instances when law enforcement may need access to smartphones or applications to investigate suspected terrorists.

“If we find evidence of a terrorist plot… and despite having a phone number, despite having a social media address or email address, we can’t penetrate that, that’s a problem,” Obama said in January. He then noted that technology companies should help find a solution, calling these businesses "patriots."

Clearly Silicon Valley has other ideas.

"Mandating the weakening of encryption or encryption 'work-arounds' is not the way to address this need," the organizations wrote in the letter. "We are committed to finding pathways forward that preserve security, privacy, and innovation... We look forward to continuing this discussion with your administration."

Silicon Valley and the Obama administration once enjoyed a historic bromance, but the relationship became more strained in the wake of whistleblower Edward Snowden's revealing documents that alleged the National Security Agency mined data through companies like Google, Facebook and Microsoft as part of a secret surveillance program.

Tech executives were not shy about their frustrations. Some, like Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, warned that the U.S. government "need to be much more transparent about what they're doing" or else "people will believe the worst." Others like Yahoo and Cisco said the revelations could hurt their reputations and perhaps even their sales abroad.

The latter fear may prove to be true, at least according to a study released this week from the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation. The report estimates that fallout in the foreign markets from the surveillance issue will cost U.S. technology companies more than $35 billion through next year.

"It has become clear that the U.S. tech industry as a whole, not just the cloud computing sector, has under-performed as a result of the Snowden revelations," the report says.

No wonder the technology industry doesn't want to play ball with Obama's plan on encryption.

Move money from your wrist with CommBank's new smart watch app

If you have ever wanted Siri's dulcet tones advising you when to buy or sell Apple stocks, wait no longer.

On Wednesday, the Commonwealth Bank released two smart watch apps aimed at helping customers with convenient, on-the-go consumer banking and share trading.

Available free on iOS, the Commonwealth Securities (CommSec) Apple Watch app lets users view their share portfolio and watch lists, and even use Siri to get live share prices. To make a trade, however, they'll still need to turn to the CommSec mobile app or bank website, or even, horror, make a phone call.

Paul Rayson, executive general manager of CommSec, said in a statement around 25% of logins and 11% of trades now take place on the bank's mobile app, so making a smart watch app for trading is a natural fit for the bank's customers.

The Commonwealth Bank also announced its consumer-focused CommBank app for smart watches is available to the public, after testing and development began in April.

The CommBank app for smart watches, available free on Android and iOS, has some features from the bank's online hub — including viewing ATM locations and account balances.

The bank is also allowing iPhone users to access the CommBank app via Apple's Touch ID, meaning customers will be able to transfer cash and lock down credit cards after just a touch of their fingerprint.

A number of other Australian banks have also built smart watch apps, including Westpac, St.George and ING Direct.

The Commonwealth Bank, in particular, has signalled its openness to incorporating new technologies into banking in recent months. In June, the bank's Chief Information Officer David Whiteing announced the company is using peer-to-peer, online payment transfer system, Ripple, to transfer payments between subsidiaries.

He even suggested the bank may one day allow users to store cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin in their accounts.
