Nepal has great diversity in its animal wildlife. Nepal has different climatic conditions, from near tropical conditions in the plains to near arctic conditions in the upper Himalayas, that too within a span of 200 kms.
Its wildlife biodiversity is also due to its having radically different ecoregions such as, plains, savanna and grasslands, foothills, wetlands, water bodies like Rara lake (Mahendra Daha), dense forests, pine forests, glaciers and river systems, mountain and gorges and snow and ice covered upper Himalayas.

This has lead to Nepal having a large variety in wildlife, of both plants and animals. To conserve and protect its wildlife, the government has established numerous national parks and reserves. The offshoot of having so many conservation parks and reserves is wildlife tourism.

Wildlife tours, wildlife trails and trekking to see the animals in their natural habitat has become a boon for Nepal's tourism industry. The spiny babbler, a species of bird in the Leiothrichidae family is endemic to this country and it is only occurs here.

Nepal animal - Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris)

The Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) is the greatly established subspecies of tiger. It is estimated that Nepal has about 250 of these animals in its wildlife reserves. The Bengal tiger is classified as endangered species by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The tiger reserves, Chitwan National Park and Parsa Wildlife Reserve in Nepal are contiguous in the south with Indian Tiger Reserve, Valmiki National Park.

The Bengal fox (Vulpes bengalensis), also known as the Indian fox, is endemic to the Indian subcontinent. The Bengal fox is found in the Terai plains and foothills of Himalayas in Nepal. The Bengal fox is a small fox with an elongated muzzle and long, pointed ears. The animal's bushy tail is nearly half the length of its head and body. A black patch is present at the tip of the muzzle as well as the tip of the tail.

The clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa) is found in the foothills of Himalayas in Nepal. Its habitat extends to mainland Southeast Asia and China. The clouded leopard is classified by IUCN in 2008 as vulnerable species. It is estimated that less then 10,000 mature clouded leopards exist in the wild. The habitat loss due to deforestation and hunting of the animals for their skin is endangering these animals.

The corsac fox (Vulpes corsac) is a medium-sized fox, distributed widely in the central Asia, China and Mongolia. In Nepal, corsac fox is found in open grassy steppes and grasslands. It has grayish yellow fur on its body which is paler on the underparts. In winter the fur becomes, longer, thicker, silkier with pale straw color. A darker line runs down the back.

The red panda (Ailurus fulgens) is a small arboreal animal native to eastern Himalayas and South-western China and Nepal. IUCN has classified the red panda as vulnerable. The red panda population of less than 10,000 is dwindling sharply due to habitat loss and poaching. The red panda has brown coat which is darker on the underside. The red panda is mostly nocturnal and active in the night.

The Indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis) is also known as Indian one-horned rhinoceros is classified by IUCN as vulnerable species. Main population is restricted to Terai riverine grasslands in the foothills of Himalayas in Nepal and north-eastern Assam state in India. Their population had dwindled due to habitat loss and poaching for their horns. The Indian rhinoceros population in Nepal is around 500 animals.

The snow leopard (Panthera uncia) is distributed in the mountainous regions of central Asia and Himalayan Asia. The snow leopard is usually observed at 3,000+ meter elevations in the Himalayan Nepal. The snow leopard is adapted to cold mountainous habitat. The fur of the animal is long and thick and the ears are small and rounded to reduce heat loss. To suit mountainous life they have stocky body and short legs.

The Indian elephant (Elephas maximus indicus) are native to mainland Asia, including India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Myanmar. IUCN has classified the Indian elephant as endangered species. There is decline in the population of these animals due to habitat degradation and loss.

In the Bardia National Park the Indian elephant population had risen from 25 to 50 animals in a decade. About 60 animals were estimated to reside in the Karnali floodplain and the Babai Valley.

The gaur (Bos gaurus), also called Indian bison is classified by IUCN as vulnerable. Earlier Gaur was distributed throughout Asia. Presently the animal population is restricted to pockets due to wildlife habitat loss. In Nepal, gaur are found primarily in Chitwan National Park and the adjacent Parsa Wildlife Reserve. Chitwan wildlife reserve is estimated to have 300 animals and Parsa wildlife reserve is estimated to have 40 animals.

The brown bear (Ursus arctos) is a large bear distributed across much of Europe, north and central Asia and north America. The Himalayan brown bear (Ursus arctos isabellinus) is the subspecies of brown bear. These animals are found in Nepal, India, Pakistan and Tibet. They are not endangered. However brown bears are considered to have become extinct in Bhutan.

Nepal has over 800 species of birds, which are about 8% of the world's recorded bird species. Nepal is endowed with different climatic zones within a span of 200 kilometers.
In Nepal, right from tropical Terai region, through, foothills, lower himalayas and Great himalayan ranges one can come across subtropical zones, temperate zones, cold zones, subarctic-like zones and arctic-like zones. The birds of Nepal also have great diversity in having evolved or adapted to the climatic requirements.

Nineteen species of birds in Nepal are near threatened and 15 species are in the category of restricted range. There are many wintering species and also migratory birds breeding in Nepal or passing over the country. Nepal offers many bird watching spots for the tourists, trekkers and climbers.

The Shivapuri Watershed and Wildlife Reserve, Nagarjun Royal Forest on Jamacho hill, banks of the Manohara river, Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, Chitwan National Park, Langtang trekking region, Solu Khumbu trekking region and Annapurna trekking region are some of bird watching spots in Nepal.

The spiny babbler (Turdoides nipalensis) belonging to the Leiothrichidae family, is found only in Nepal.

The Himalayan monal (Lophophorus impejanus) is also known as danphe. The Himalayan monals belong to the pheasant family, Phasianidae. The Himalayan monal is the national bird of Nepal. The Himalayan monal are large birds weighing above two kg. The natural distribution of the Himalayan monal extends from Afghanistan in the west to Myanmar in the east along the Himalayas. It prefers the temperate regions of the mountains and is found in altitudes between 2700 and 3700 meters.

The great crested grebes (Podiceps cristatus) belong to the order Podicipediformes and family Podicipedidae. They are small to medium sized birds, seen diving in freshwater bodies. Though there are twenty species of grebes, only three species are found to occur in Nepal. The great crested grebes are the largest of the grebes. The great crested grebes are distributed throughout Europe and Asia.

The spot-billed pelicans (Pelecanus philippensis) also known as grey pelicans belong to the order Pelecaniformes and family Pelecanidae. Of the eight species found worldwide only two pelican species are found in Nepal. Spot-billed pelicans are large water birds, having a pouch under their beak and webbed feet. The spot-billed pelicans are distributed throughout Asia, including Nepal and Indonesia.

The purple herons (Ardea purpurea) belong to the order Ciconiiformes and family Ardeidae. Of the 61 species belonging to the Ardeidae family, 16 species are found to occur in Nepal. The purple herons are large wading birds having long necks and legs. A typical characteristic of the Ardeidae family is that in flight the birds keep their neck retracted. The subspecies, Ardea purpurea manilensis are distributed throughout Southern Asia, including Pakistan, Nepal, Philippines and Indonesia.

The painted storks (Mycteria leucocephala) belong to the order Ciconiiformes and family Ciconiidae. Of the 19 species of Ciconiidae family worldwide, 8 species occur in Nepal. The painted storks are large wading birds found in the wetlands of Asia and Southeastern Asia including Nepal. The painted storks are not migratory and fly between local water bodies. They have distinctive wing patterns and have pink tertial feathers.

The glossy ibis (Plegadis falcinellus) belong to the order Ciconiiformes and family Threskiornithidae. Of the 36 species of Threskiornithidae family worldwide, only four species are known to occur in Nepal. The glossy ibis are large wading birds and strong fliers. The glossy ibis are distributed throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and Americas. The glossy ibis nest on tall reeds, grasses, low trees or bushes in the wetlands and marshes.

The red-crested pochards (Netta rufina) belong to the order Anseriformes and family Anatidae. Worldwide there are 131 species in the Anatidae family and Nepal has 34 species. The red-crested pochards are large diving birds found in marshes and wetlands. The red-crested pochards are distributed throughout southern Europe, Central Asia and Indian Subcontinent. The male red-crested pochards have distinctive rounded orange head, red bill and black breast.

The brahminy kites (Haliastur indus) belong to the order Falconiformes and family Accipitridae. Worldwide Accipitridae family has 233 species and 50 species of them are found in Nepal. The brahminy kite also known as the red-backed sea-eagle. They are medium sized birds of prey distributed in Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia and Australia. They are found near coasts and inland water bodies feeding on fish and other small prey.

The sarus cranes (Grus antigone) belong to the order Gruiformes and family Gruidae. Worldwide Gruidae family comprises of 15 species and four of the species are found in Nepal. The sarus cranes are large non-migratory cranes, usually found near wetlands and marshes. The sarus cranes are the tallest of the flying birds. The sarus cranes are distributed in Indian Subcontinent, Southeast Asia and Australia.

The long-tailed broadbills (Psarisomus dalhousiae) belong to the order Passeriformes and family Eurylaimidae. There are 15 species in the family Eurylaimidae and only two species are present in Nepal.

The long-tailed broadbills are found in the Himalayas. They are small birds with long tail. The long-tailed broadbills inhabit the forests in Himalayas and feed on insects.

Nepal (Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal or सङ्घीय लोकतान्त्रिक गणतन्त्र नेपाल) is a landlocked country located in the Himalayas, bordered to the east, south and west by India. Its northern border is shared by the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.
Northern Nepal is mountainous. Of the world's ten tallest mountains, eight are in this country. Nepal has more than 240 mountain peaks towering over 20,000 ft (6,096 m) above sea level. Lowland plains (Terai) border India. As we move northward, the landscape changes into hills and foothills, then into hilly mountains and then into mountains of the Great Himalayan Range.

Nepal has eight of the world's fourteen mountain peaks which are higher than 8,ooo meters from the sea level. They are, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Kanchenjunga, Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and Manaslu.

Endowed with numerous mountains and peaks, Nepal has become a travel destination for mountaineering and trekking. The mountains offer changing landscapes and present five climate zones namely, subtropical zones, temperate zones, cold zones, subarctic zones and Arctic zones.

An adventure tourist can experience all the climate zones within 100 kms of travel in Nepal.

Everest mountain

Mount Everest with its peak reaching 8,848 meters (29,029 ft) above sea level is the highest mountain on the Earth. The international border between Nepal and China runs across the peak's precise summit point. The challenges involved in climbing, such as crossing Khumbu Icefall, facing blizzards, risking avalanches and low atmospheric pressure attract many highly experienced climbers and mountaineers from many nations. As on March 2012, Mount Everest has been climbed 5,656 times and associated tragic record of deaths is 223. On 29 May 1953, at 11:30 am local time, Edmund Hillary from New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay, from Darjeeling, India, successfully reached the summit.

Kanchenjunga mountain

Kanchenjunga is the second highest mountain in Nepal and the third highest in the world. It is in the Himalayan range known as Kangchenjunga Himal and is located on the border with Sikkim State of India. Of the five highest peaks in the range, three lie on the border between India and one is located in the Taplejung District of the country. The main Kanchenjunga peak is 8,586 m (28,169 ft) high from the sea level. Joe Brown and George Band, of a British expedition, climbed the Kangchenjunga on 25 May 1955. In fact all expeditions to Kangchenjunga stop short of the summit, to keep the summit inviolate, as a tradition of Nepal. Kangchenjunga Himal ranges have 14 protected areas rich in fauna and flora. Snow leopard, Asian black bear, red panda and white-bellied musk deer are some of the protected endangered species in these reserves.

Lhotse mountains

Lhotse is the third highest mountain in Nepal and the fourth highest in the world. Lhotse is located on the border with Tibet region of China. The main summit is 8,516 meters (27,940 ft) above sea level. There are two more summits, Lhotse Middle (East) and Lhotse Shar, which are also above 8000 meters. Ernst Reiss and Fritz Luchsinger of a Swiss expedition, climbed the main summit on May 18, 1956. Lhotse Shar was first climbed by Sepp Mayerl and Rolf Walter of Austria on May 12, 1970. Eugeny Vinogradsky, Sergei Timofeev, Alexei Bolotov and Petr Kuznetsov of a Russian expedition climbed Lhotse Middle on May 23, 2001. As on December.2008, Lhotse main has been climbed 371 times.

Makalu mountains

Makalu is the fourth highest mountain in Nepal and the fifth highest in the world. It is located in Mahalangur Himalayas sharing the border with China. Mt. Everest is 19 km from this peak. The main Makalu peak is 8,463 meters (27,766 ft) above the sea level. Kangchungtse and Chomo Lonzo are two other peaks in the Makalu range, which are above 7000 meters from the sea levels. Lionel Terray and Jean Couzy of a French expedition climbed the Makalu peak on May 15, 1955. Makalu, having steep pitches and knife-edged ridges, is one of the most difficult mountains for mountaineers to climb. Makalu-Barun glacier valley in Nepal is situated at the foot hills of Makalu mountains having beautiful landscapes comprising cascading waterfalls, deep gorges and dense forests harboring rare fauna and flora.

Cho Oyu mountains

Cho Oyu is the sixth highest mountain in the world and fifth highest in Nepal. It is 8,201 meter (26,906 ft) high above sea level. It is located in Mahalangur Himalayas sharing the border with China and is 20 km west of Everest. Cho Oyu was first climbed on October 19, 1954, by Herbert Tichy, Joseph Jöchler and Sherpa Pasang Dawa Lama of an Austrian expedition. Mountaineers consider Cho Oyu to be the easiest peak to climb among over 8000 meter peaks.

Dhaulagiri mountains

Dhaulagiri ranges extend 120 km from Kaligandaki River to the Bheri. Dhaulagiri ranges have thirteen above 7000 meter peaks. Dhaulagiri I is the sixth highest peak in Nepal and is the seventh highest mountains in the world. Dhaulagiri I is 8,167 metres (26,795 ft) high from sea level. Kurt Diemberger, P. Diener, E. Forrer, A. Schelbert, Nyima Dorje Sherpa and Nawang Dorje Sherpa of Swiss-Austrian expedition climbed the Dhaulagiri I summit on May 13, 1960. It is located 34 km west of Annapurna I. As of 2007, Dhaulagiri I was climbed 358 times and there were 58 fatalities.

Manaslu mountains

Manaslu is the eighth highest mountain in the world and is the seventh highest in Nepal. It is located in the Mansiri Himal ranges of Nepalese Himalayas. Manaslu is 8,156 meters (26,759 ft) high above sea level. Other major peaks with over 7000 meters height in the region are Himalchuli and Ngadi Chuli. Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu, members of a Japanese expedition, successfully climbed the summit for the first time on May 9, 1956.

Apart from mountaineering, trekking is a popular sport in these regions. The Manaslu Circuit Trek is a popular trekking trail. The Manaslu Conservation Area in Nepal has rare and endangered fauna like snow leopards, grey wolf, musk deer, blue sheep, Himalayan Tahr and pandas.

Annapurna ranges

Annapurna ranges are located in north-central part of the country. Annapurna I is tenth highest mountain in the world and the eighth highest in Nepal. Apart from Annapurna I, thirteen more peaks towering over 7,000 meters from sea level are present in this region. The peaks in Annapurna ranges are considered dangerous to climb, having high fatalities of climbers. Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal, of a French expedition were the first to climb Annapurna I on 3 June 1950. The Annapurna Conservation Area is a trekking haven. In the snowstorms and avalanches of October 2014 in Nepal, at least 43 people were killed and 175 were injured.

The Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal (सङ्घीय लोकतान्त्रिक गणतन्त्र नेपाल) is a landlocked country. Located in the Himalayas, Nepal shares a common border with the People's Republic of China in the north.
Nepal is bordered by India in the east, west and south. Kathmandu is the capital city and is the largest metropolis in the country. The national symbols include its unique flag, its emblem, Rhododendron flower, monal bird, and cow. Gautama Buddha was born in this country.

Nepal flag

The national flag is a combination of two pennants (pennons in vexillology). Among the world nations, it is the only flag which is not an quadrilateral.

The flag is crimson red, the color of its flower (Rhododendron arboreum) symbol. The border of the flag is deep blue, the color of peace. A red triangular flag is a Hindu symbol of victory.

The combined twin triangles may also be the signs of Himalayas or the two major religions of the country. The depiction moon and sun represents the hope that the country will last as long as the sun and the moon.

The present flag was adopted on December 16, 1962.

The emblem (coat of arms or symbol) of the country was adopted on 30 December 2006. On the crest of the coat of arms is the flag. The emblem also depicts the Mount Everest and green hills.

Yellow color in the emblem is the symbol of fertile Terai region. The male and female hands join to denote gender equality. There is a white map of the country in the coat of arms. A garland of red Rhododendron flowers (national flower) is also depicted. The national motto in Sanskrit carried in red scroll is placed at the base of the emblem. The motto is "जननी जन्मभूमिश्च स्वर्गादपी गरीयसी" meaning "The Mother and the Motherland are greater than Heaven".

The bright crimson red flowers of Rhododendron arboreum, a small evergreen tree, are the flower symbol of the country.

Rhododendron arboreum is the state tree of Uttarakhand & Himachal Pradesh states of India.

National bird of Nepal

The Himalayan monal (Lophophorus impejanus) is the national bird of the country. Monal is also known as danphe and belongs to family Phasianidae.

The male like all other pheasants has multicolored plumage whereas the females have dull brownish plumage.

It is a fairly large size pheasant, weighing above two kilograms. It is also found in the surrounding Indian states and other countries bordering Himalayas.

Cow is the animal symbol of the country. Cattle including cows are ungulates and belong to genus Bos in the subfamily Bovinae.

Cows are considered sacred in Hinduism. In Nepal and some states in India cow slaughter is prohibited by law.

Palace of the Shirvanshahs is situated in the Inner Walled City of Baku, the Capital of Azerbaijan. Palace of the Shirvanshahs was build in the 15th century by the rulers of Shirvan.
The palace complex contains the two-story main building, the tomb, the Divanhane or Divan-Khane (State Council or pavilion), the mausoleum of Seyid Yahya Bakuvi, the Murad's gate, the shah's mosque with a minaret, a reservoir and the bath-house (hammam).

The palace is built on the highest point of one of the hills within Icheri Sheher and is considered as one of the pearls of Azerbaijan's architecture. It can be seen from the sea as well as high points in the city. Baku city and its tourist spots are attracting many holiday travelers.

The Shirvan capital, Shemakha, was ruined by a devastating earthquake in 15th century. Shirvan rulers, transferring the capital to Baku had built the palace complex. The complex suffered serious damages during 18th century bombardment by Russian Navy. Much of the upper parts were destroyed. The main entrance leads to an open courtyard at the upper level with access to residential area and Divankhane.

The Divankhane, a small stone pavilion, is the place of state meetings and receptions. It is built on a square courtyard arcaded on three sides and the Divankhane structure occupying the center.

It has a magnificent portal at the entrance and the structure is covered by a dome. The ruler might have sat on raised platform. There is a basement cell with grille in the floor for communication.

The residential area of the palace has two stories. The entrance is through a high portal into an octagonal domed hall. The hall leads to a small octagonal vestibule connecting to other rooms of the residential area and two staircases. Captivating different views of the Caspian sea greet the holiday traveler from each of the rooms. The lower storey opens on a garden.

The garden contains the Mausoleum of Seyid Yahya Bakuvi, who was a Helwati Sufi saint and a royal scholar in the court of Shirvan ruler. The tomb is a two-storeyed domed building. The lower floor housed the burial vault.

The Mausoleum of the Shirvanshahs is a rectangular structure covered with a hexagonal dome. 1945 excavations revealed seven burials.

The palace mosque is situated in the lower court of the complex. It has a big prayer hall for men and a smaller prayer hall for women. There are two subsidiary rooms. The main entrance has a portal and in total there are three entrances to the mosque.

The Palace Bath house was discovered in 1939 excavations of a vineyard on the lowest terrace of the complex. The bath house ruins are two large rectangular structures divided into smaller ones. The bath house is semi-underground.

October 18: The Republic of Azerbaijan declared its independence from the Soviet Union on the 18th of October in the year 1991. Greetings to the citizens of Azerbaijan. The tourism industry of Azerbaijan is a fast growing sector, especially in the past five years.
The rich ancient, attractive cultural and natural heritage of the Republic of Azerbaijan has made it a travel destination of visitors from all over the world. The unique location and climate of the country has made it a tourism holiday destination both in the summer and winter.

Azerbaijan is situated in the Caucasus region, a growing tourism center. It is a contiguous transcontinental country spanning Europe and Asia. It is a democratic and secular republic with presidential system of government. The capital city is Baku. The country has rich resources of crude oil, iron ore and other metals. The country has towering mountains, national reserves, forests, heritage sites, valleys, plains, lowlands, lakes, sandy beaches, lakes, small islands and a long coast bordering Caspian Sea as tourism attractions. Most of the rivers and rivulets flow into the Caspian Sea.

Azerbaijan national reserves

Nearly half of the territory of the country is mountainous with several mountain lakes and mineral springs as holiday travel destinations. The country has 13 nature reserves and 18 wildlife sanctuaries as tourism attractions for nature lovers. Gizilagach state reserve, Zagatala reserve, Shirvan reserve, Turyanchay reserve, Ismayilli reserve, Goygol Reserve and Girkan national park are some of the famous travel and tourism destinations.

Azerbaijan is endowed with more than 5000 varieties of plants of which nearly 200 are endemic. Trekking lovers can travel and explore the deciduous forests, riparian forests, subalpine forests and meadows.

Azerbaijan fauna

The fauna is diverse and more than 12 thousand species are found in the country. The forests and meadows have bears, wolves, foxes, jackals, lynx, badgers, roe deer, gazelles, deer, chamois, dagestan goat, wild boars, hares, pheasants, partridges and grouse. Birds are tourism attractions and birds like geese, swans, herons, pelicans and flamingos can be seen in lakes and shallow bay of the Caspian Sea. Salmon, sturgeon, beluga, bream and carp are the fish wealth of the country.

Azerbaijan travel

The national airline is “Azerbaijan Airlines”, in short AZAL. It connects to all the major cities from the capital Baku to promote tourism. AirBaltic, Aeroflot, FlyDubai, Emirates, Qatar Airways,and Pegasus Airlines are some of the airlines connecting Baku. Excellent roads connect major cities of tourism interest. Public transport buses, private buses, minibuses and purple London cabs are available for travel inside the country. For travel inside Baku, the underground metro trains are the best choice. Car rental is available, with or without driver.

Bhutan is situated in the southern slopes and foot-hills of the eastern Himalayas. The kingdom is landlocked and located between the two great Asian nations of China and India.

Districts and Blocks

The kingdom is divided into four administrative divisions (dzongdey). Each zone is further divided into districts (dzongkhag). There are twenty districts. Large districts (dzongkhags) are further divided into sub-districts known as dungkhag. At the root level, groups of villages form a constituency blocks ( gewog) and are administered by a gup, an elected people representative.

Thimpu is the largest city of Bhutan with a population of 98.676 (2005 PHCB).

The National Library of Bhutan (NLB), Thimphu,was established in 1967 under the patronage of HM Queen Ashi Phuntso Choden. It was started with small collection of precious documents. The Memorial Chorten (the Thimphu Chorten), is a chorten (a stupa) located on Doeboom Lam in the southern-central part of the city of Thimpu, near the main roundabout and Indian military hospital.

It built in 1974 honouring the 3rd King of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck (1928–1972).

It is a prominent landmark with its golden spires and bells.

View of the Trongsa (Tongsa) town, capital of the Trongsa district. Trongsa means 'new village' in Dzongkha language. Drukpa Kagyu lama, Ngagi Wangchuk had built the first temple here.

Takin (Budorcas taxicolor) is a goat antelope occuring in Eastern Himalayas. There are four subspecies of Budorcas taxicolor. The Bhutan Takin is Budorcas taxicolor whitei. They are 100 - 130 cm tall and weigh upto 650 kg. Takin is the national animal of the Kingdom.

Golden Langur or Gee's Golden Langur (Trachypithecus geei) was brought to attention of zoologists by E. P. Gee in 1050s. It is a Old World monkey found in a small region of the foothills of Black Mountains of Bhutan and western Assam region of India. It is one of the most endangered species of primates.

The Clouded Leopard (Neofelis nebulosa) is a medium-sized cat found south of the Himalayas and in Southeast Asia. They occupy tropical and sub-tropical forests at elevations upto 3000 metres. Clouded leopards are highly arboreal and they rest and hunt on the trees. It has a tan or tawny coat, and is distinctively marked with large, irregularly-shaped, dark-edged ellipses.

The Binturong (Arctictis binturong) are arboreal animals belonging to family Viverridae, which includes the civets and genets. They are found in the forests of Bhutan, India, Bangladesh, Burma and south Asian countries. They primarily eat fruits and are also known to eat rodents and birds.

The Indian Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis) or the Great One-horned Rhinoceros or the Asian One-horned Rhinoceros is a herbivore and is primarily found in, Bhutan, north-eastern India, and Nepal. Their distribution is confined to the tall grasslands and forests in the foothills of the Himalayas. In the wild fully grown males are larger than females weighing from 2,000 to 3,000 kg.

The Asian or Asiatic Elephant (Elephas maximus), is the one of the endangered species of animals.

The elephants of Bhutan are mostly confined to the southern plains and foothills from Sipsu in the west to Dhansiri Chhu in the east along Indo- Bhutan border. In this kingdom the estimated elephant habitat is around 2,000sq.km and resident population about 60 to 100 animals.

The Indian leopard (Panthera pardus fusca) is a leopard subspecies widely distributed south of Himalayas on the Indian subcontinent. It is smallest of the four big cats namely lion, tiger and jaguar. They inhabit temperate forests and northern coniferous forests, dry deciduous forests and tropical rain forests. The are found up to an altitude of 2.500 m, bordering snow leopard habitat.

The Indian Cormorant (Phalacrocorax fuscicollis) belong to genus Phalacrocorax. They are found south of Himalayas in Bhutan, Nepal, India and south-west and south-eastern Asian countries. They are mostly resident birds, small and slender in size and measure upto 60 cm in length. They dive into the water and catch their prey, mainly fish.

The Greylag Goose (Anser anser), also called Graylag Goose in US, belongs to the genus Anser.
These birds are distributed widely in the Old World. These birds have evolved for an aquatic existence with webbed feet, flattened bills and feathers with oily coating so that they do not get wet. They have a rotund, bulky body, a thick and long neck, and a large head and bill.

Indian-ringnecked Parakeet (Psittacula krameri manillensis) originates from the southern Indian subcontinent and has naturalized populations worldwide. They are non-migratory and show gender dimorphism.In the wild, they usually feed on buds, berries, fruits, nuts,vegetables and seeds. Wild flocks also fly several miles to forage causing extensive damage to farmlands and orchards.

The Striated Heron (Butorides striata), also known as Mangrove Heron or Little Heron, is a small heron. It found to populate the low lands and water bodies of Bhutan. It is a resident non-migratory bird. However they are distributed all over the world.

The establishment of the first king and Bhutan kingdom

After the British war on Bhutan and the subsequent treaty, in 1870s and 1880s competition and rivalry among the pro-British ponlop of Tongsa and pro-Tibetan ponlop of Paro renewed. This resulted in the ascendancy of the ponlop of Tongsa, Ugyen Wangchuck. He defeated his political rivals and enemies and united Bhutan amidst civil wars and rebellions during 1882-1885.
During this time, British to offset the Russian advances in Lhasa, wanted to open trade ties with Tibet.
Ugyen Wangchuck volunteered to accompany the British mission as a mediator and the Anglo-Tibetan Convention of 1904 was secured. In appreciation of his services Ugyen Wangchuck was knighted and accrued greater powers and emerged as a national leader of Bhutan.
He removed his rival, ponlop of Paro and established his supporter and relative belonging to Dorji family, in his place.
When the last shabdrung died in 1903 and a reincarnation did not appear till 1906 Ugyen Wangchuck took control of the civil administration of Bhutan.
In 1907 the 54th Druk Desi was forced to retire and shabdrung system came to an end.
In November 1907, in the assembly of heads of important families, leading Buddhist monks and government officials it was decided to do away with the 300 years old dual power system and Ugyen Wangchuck was elected as the first hereditary king (Druk Gyalpo - Dragon King) of the kingdom of Bhutan, and he reigned from 1907 to 1926.
The top government position of gongzim (chief chamberlain), was created and the Dorji family became hereditary holders of the position in the kingdom.
King Ugyen Wangchuck, to protect the future of Bhutan Kingdom from China, entered into another treaty with British, the Treaty of Punakha, signed on January 8, 1910. The king of Bhutan agreed to be guided by the advice of the British Government in regard to external relations of the kingdom and the British agreed to double their annual stipend to 100,000 rupees and agreed to exercise no interference in the internal administration of Bhutan kingdom.
The first hereditary king of Bhutan is credited with many modernisation programmes of Bhutan Kingdom. Internal communications were improved, schools followed western-style, trade and commerce with India was encouraged and the Buddhist monastic system was revitalized in the kingdom.
King Ugyen Wangchuck died in 1926 and his son, Jigme Wangchuck succeeded him as King of Bhutan.

Reign of the second Bhutan King Jigme Wangchuck

King Jigme Wangchuck reigned between 1926 to 1952. The second King followed his fathers foot-steps and built more roads, dispensaries and modern schools. Monasteries and district administration were brought under royal control. However Bhutan Kingdom still remained isolated from the international community.
When India attained freedom from British rule, it became the defacto protector of the kingdom.
On 8th August 1949, Treaty of Friendship was signed between the Government of Bhutan and Government of India in similar terms of Treaty of Punaka.
Similar to treaty with British, India will not interfere in the internal affairs of Kingdom of Bhutan and India will also give subsidy of 500,000 rupees per annum.
Bhutan on its part will be guided by the India in its external affairs.

Reign of the third Bhutan king Jigme Dorji Wangchuck

The third Dragon king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, was enthroned in the year 1952. He made continued efforts to modernize Bhutan kingdom. His Europe educated wife, who was also cousin of the king of Sikkim, was of great support to him in his modernization programmes. The most important step in this aspect was the establishment of the National Assembly (the Tshogdu) in the year 1953. It was a welcome move towards a constitutional monarchy.
Major land reforms were taken up and slavery and serfdom were abolished. Judiciary was separated from the executive branch of government.
With Indian funding roads were constructed from the central Bhutan to Indian plains.
Many institutions like national museum, national library, national stadium and national archives were established in the Kingdom of Bhutan.
The position of gongzim held by Dorji was upgraded to lonchen (prime minister).
During the period between 1962 and 1965 there was turmoil in the Bhutan Kingdom with assassination of Dorji when the King was in Switzerland for medical care.
Dorji's brother, Lhendup Dorji took over as acting lonchen. There was power struggle between the Dorji family and the Tibetan consort of the king.
This lead to the family of Dorji being exiled from the Bhutan Kingdom.
In July 1965 there was an assassination attempt on the king and the king pardoned the would-be assassins.
In May 1968 gave further powers to National assembly with power to remove ministers and the king himself.
In 1969 the king renounced his veto power and offered to step down if two-thirds of the legislature passes a no-confidence vote.
In 1971 after holding observer status for three years, the Kingdom of Bhutan was admitted to the United Nations.
King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck rule lasted until his death in July 1972.

Rein of the fourth Bhutan king Jigme Singye Wangchuck

Jigme Singye Wangchuck succeeded his father when he was seventeen years old. He was educated in India and Britain.
As his mother was the sister of the lonchen Jigme Palden Dorji, there was reconciliation between the royal family and the family of Dorji.
The formal coronation of the king took place in June 1974. When there was division of Pakistan, Bhutan kindom was among the first nations to recognise the new Nation of Bangladesh.
Bhutan kingdom gradually established diplomatic relations with other nations and started joining international organisations.
Many of the countries with which diplomatic relations were established provided aid for development of the Kingdom.
Official television broadcasting was introduced in Bhutan in 1999.
In the year 2003 with the help of Indian armed forces, Kingdom of Bhutan got rid of Indian separatist groups from its territory.
From 1988 Bhutan Kingdom is faced with the problem of citizenship of Nepali speaking residents now in UN refugee camps.
On 26th of March, 2005 a draft of the first Constitution of the kingdom was circulated and every citizen was requested to review it.
The fourth Druk Gyalpo, King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, abdicted all his powers as King to his son Prince Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck on 14th December 2006.
It was prelude to prepare his son for the fulfledged transformation of Bhutan to a democratic form of government, slated for 2008.

Rein of the fifth Bhutan king, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck

King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck was educated at Yangchenphu Higher secondary school, Bhutan.
Khesar studied abroad at Phillips Academy (Andover, Massachusetts), Cushing Academy and Wheaton College in Massachusetts, United States.
Then he graduated from Magdalen College, University of Oxford, United Kingdom, where he completed the Foreign Service Program and an MPhil in Politics.
He became king on 14 December 2006, and was officially crowned as king on 6 November 2008.
King of Bhutan signed a new treaty with India in February 2007, replacing the earlier 1949 treaty.
The kingdom of Bhutan held its first general elections on March 2008 for the National Assembly.
Of the two political parties contesting the elections, Bhutan Peace and Prosperity Party won 45 of the seats and the the two members of People's Democratic Party won the remaining 2 seats.
Jigme Yoser Thinley was elected to head the Government of the kingdom and is holding the post of Lyonchen (prime minister).

The British influence of the Bhutan (Drukyul) history started in the late 1700 A.D.
The Cooch Bihar region in the north east region of India was an Independent kingdom and on request from the king of Cooch Bihar, Drukyul helped the kingdom against the Mughals; history records inform of Cooch Bihar becoming a dependency of Drukyul.
However, as a twist in history, in 1772 a succession dispute arose in Cooch Bihar and British troops invaded it and made it their dependency.
The history chronicles inform of Bhutanese being driven out of Cooch Bihar. Druk Desi appealed for help from Tibet against the British.
However the request for the help was turned down and the revival of the old Tibet's claim on the territory of Bhutan was made by the Panchen Lama of Tibet.
This made the Druk Desi to make a peace treaty with British resulting in this country returning to pre 1730 borders and allowing Britain to harvest timber from the territory of Bhutan.
In 1784 British passed on the control of Bengal Duars territory to Bhutan for certain annual tribute payments.

The boundary was not clear-cut and Drukyul defaulted in payments.
In 1834 Britain invaded Drukyul and reclaiming the Duars territory in 1841 paid an annual payment of 10,000 rupees to Bhutan.
In 1852 Bhutan demanded increased compensation which was turned down and the British reduced the compensation to 3000 rupees.
In 1862 Drukyul raided Cooch Bihar and Sikkim and British withheld the payments and demanded return of the territory.

Bhutan did not respond to the demands and further rejected the peace treaty offered in 1864.
This lead to Britain declaring war in November 1864.
As per history records fighting went on for nearly five months and Drukyul was defeated.
History records inform us that In November 11, 1865 the treaty of Sinchula was signed.

Drukyul ceded the territories of Dewangiri, Bengal duars and Assam. In return Britain paid a subsidy of 50,000 rupees annually.
In 1885, Ugyen Wangchuck to protect the nation from further threats, sided with British forces and helped in securing the Anglo-Tibetan Convention in the year 1904.
In the year 1907 the history old Shabdrung system was put to an end and Ugyen Wangchuck was elected as the first hereditary monarch of Bhutan.
Ugyen Wangchuck, on January 1910 made history by entering into a new treaty.

In this Treat of Punakha, British agreed to increase the annual stipend to 100,000 rupees and agreed not to interfere in the internal affairs of Bhutan.
Bhutan, in return, agreed to be guided by the advice of the British government in regard to its external relations.

With peace all around and with British protection energies and resources were channeled by the king for modernisation of Drukyul and revitalizing its monastic system.
With the Independence of India, again history was made when Bhutan signed the Treaty of Friendship between the government of Bhutan and the Government of India.

It was in similar terms of non interference in the internal affairs of Bhutan and being guided by India in external relations.

The early history of Bhutan was chronicled in the scriptures of Buddhism. Many of these documents were lost in fires in 1828 and 1832. More manuscripts were lost in the earth quake of 1897 and arson in 1907.
The history has to be pieced together from the reports and letters of foreign visitors, legends and folklore and a few remains of documents which escaped the calamities.

Bhutan history: Introduction of Buddhism religion in Bhutan

It is believed that Buddhism was introduced into Bhutan in early 200 A.D. However scholars in Bhutan history agree that in 7th century A.D., the first temples were constructed establishing the evidence of spread of Buddhism in Bhutan.
History tells us that Srongtsenn Gampo, a Tibetan king built two Buddhism temples, one in Central Bhutan (Bumthang) and another in Paro valley (Kyichu).
Chronicled history say that, Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), was a great tantric master of Buddhism religion from India. He was sent for by the king of Bumthang (Sendha Gyab) to get rid of a demon.
The folklore say that the Buddhism monk cured the king and converted both the king and the demon into Buddhism.
In the history of Bhutan, during the 8th century A.D., there was a exodus of monks from the Tibet region into Bhutan as the ruler of Tibet had banned the religion of Buddhism.
Thus the religion of Buddhism got firm footing in Bhutan and existed along with the original Bon religion of the region.

Bhutan history: establishment of monasteries of Buddhism and rise of religion in the rule of the nation

During the period between 9th and 17th centuries Bhutan remained a network of loosely connected regions ruled by local chieftains, noble families and ruling clans; Bon and Buddhism were followed.
In 842 A.D., the persecutor of Buddhism, Langdharma, was assassinated and Buddhism again flourished in Tibet.
The Tibetan Lama Tsangpa Gyarey Yeshe Dorji (AD 1161–1211) founded the Drukpa Kagyu lineage monastery order in Ralung.
However these sect of monks were persecuted by the rivals belonging to Gelug lineage in Tibet.
So 11th and 12th centuries saw exodus Drukpa monks from Tibet into Bhutan.
The Drukpa lamas settled and established monasteries in
the Western Bhutan; wielding influence among the locals became power centers.
Many of these lamas established their own sub sects.
Gyalwa Lhanangpa founded the Lhapa Kagyu lineage and established the Tango Goemba monastery.

From Ralung monastery in Tibet,a disciple of Lama Tsangpa Gyarey, Lama Phajo Drukgom Shigpo (1184–1251) came to Bhutan and defeating lama Gyalwa Lhanangpa, wrested control of Tango Goemba monastery.
He converted many people to the Drukpa Kagyu school of thoughts and established the Bhutanese form of Buddhism.
The period between 13th and 16th centuries in Bhutan's history saw the visits by many monks and tertons from Ralung and establishment of many monasteries and flourishing of the religion.
However the politically the region was still in the hands of local leaders and the monasteries were competing with one another for exerting influence.

The rise of Zhabdrung Rinpoche as supreme authority in Bhutan

In 1616 A.D., a descendant of Tsangpa Gyarey Yeshe Dorji (founder of Drukpa Kagyu lineage), Ngawang Namgyal (1594–1651) came to Bhutan from Tibet (Ralung).
He travelled through out Bhutan teaching the religion of Buddhism and soon gained popularity and political clout.
He, with the title of Zhabdrung Rinpoche, established himself as the ruler of Bhutan.
His rule was opposed by rivals from other lineages and his monastery Simtokha Dzong was attacked in 1629. The attacks were repelled and further attacks were mounted with the help of Tibetans. With repeated defeats the opposition diminished and in 1639 Tibet recognised Ngawang Namgyal as the ruling authority in Bhutan.
Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, strengthened his power by establishing relations with the neighbouring kingdoms of Nepal, Ladakh and Cooch Bihar.
During his rule, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, established many monasteries in Bhutan.
In the year 1644 Tibetans along with Mongols attacked Bumthang region and were defeated.
In 1648 and 1649, the powerful Dalai Lama 'Great Fifth' tried to invade Bhutan and was defeated.
The defeat of Tibetans further consolidated the position of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.

The religion and administrative system of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal

He appointed Mingyur Tenpa as governor (penlop) of Trongsa. Mingyur Tenpa brought the remaining regions of Bhutan under the effective control of Ngawang Namgyal.

Ngawang Namgyal, to have a separate religion and cultural identity, formulated many traditions, national dress, customs and ceremonies.
He also formed laws to define lay man, religion and monk and also established a system of taxes and compulsory labour for religion.
He separated the administration of the State into two wings; religion and administration. Zhabdrung Rinpoche handled the spiritual and Buddhism religion aspects of the nation.
The position of Desi was created who is an elected ruler. He was given the responsibilities of handling administrative, political and external affairs aspects of the nation.
Further a position of Je Khenpo, which was equal in status to desi, was established to look after the monastic establishment of the Buddhism religion.
Tenzin Drugyey (1591–1656), a Buddhism monk from Ralung Monastry was the first Desi and he established the system of districts and sub districts governed by Penlop (governor) and dzongpens (lords).
In 1651, in Punakha Dzong, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal went into retreat and passed away. However his death was concealed till 1705 to keep the unity of the nation.

Then the belief of reincarnation of Zhabdrung in three forms namely (ku sung thug - body, speech and mind) was introduced in the Buddhism religion. The reincarnation of the mind of Zhabdrung was considered as the head of the Buddhism state.

The next 200 years of Bhutan's Buddhism history saw great turmoil and internal strife for power. There were six mind reincarnations and 55 Desis of whom 22 desis were assassinated by rivals in the Buddhism religion.
There were invasions by Tibet and finally a truce was initiated by lamas from Tibet and the rivalries died down and the mind incarnation of the Zhabdrung continued as ruler.

The Buddhism history of Bhutan next came under the influence of British in India. This is discussed separately in another post.
Then in 1907, the hereditary ruler of Bhutan was elected and the kingdom was established in Bhutan (Discussed in detail in another post) with state religion as Buddhism.

Other religions in Bhutan

Many Nepalese have migrated and settled in Southern Bhutan and their religion is Hinduism. Temples of Hindu religion exist in Thimpu and southern regions.
The pre Buddhism religion, Bon religion has merged with Buddhism of Bhutan and there are no exclusive practicer of this religion.
Christians are scattered throughout the country in small groups and most of them practise their religion at home; only one building is there functioning as church.
There is a small population in Bhutan practising the religion of Islam.
Vajrayāna Buddhism is the state religion of Bhutan.

Bhutan, the mysterious land locked country, is cradled between the Himalayan mountains in the west and north and is extending to sub-tropical plains on the south bordering North India.

The origins and the early history of Bhutan is steeped in mythology with mystery tales of supernatural powers. The mythology and folklore take one to a dream land of ghosts, spirits, yetis, lamas reincarnated in three bodies, saints flying on tigers, angels rebuilding the temples destroyed by demons.

Archaeological studies give us some knowledge about the Bhutan before the recorded history. Archaeological remains of weapons and stone tools, megaliths and ruins of large structures built with stones (probably used as boundary stones and ritual places) were found providing us clues about a civilisation way back in 2000 BC. Absence of any evidence of neolithic origin, rules out earlier inhabitation of these regions.

Historians theorize the existence of pre history state of Monyul (meaning dark land) or Lhomon (meaning southern darkness). It is believed that this land was populated by fierce mountain aboriginal people (probably related to Monpa tribals of Bhutan).
These tribals were of neither the Mongol or Tibetian stock. The people of Monyul practiced Bon, a Shamanistic religion with the belief that shamans(medicine men) are intermediaries between the humans and the spirits. Shamans are believed to alleviate illness and traumas affecting the spirit and body.
The Monyul state was believed to have existed between 500 BC and 600 AD.
The legends in history narrate about a mighty Monyul king, who invaded and subjugated the Bihar, Bengal and Assam regions now belonging to India.

Some native scholars while referring to their home land used the names Lhomon Khashi (southern Mon country of four approaches) and Lhomon Tsendenjong (southern Mon sandalwood country) which are found in the ancient in Tibetian and Bhutanese chronicles.

Since seventeenth century, it is evident from history that the traditional name of Bhutan has been Drukyul meaning land of Drukpa.
The name Bhutan is used only in official correspondence in English language.
The origin of the name Bhutan is suggested by history scholars as a variant of Sanskrit language words Bhota-ant (end of Bhot or Tibet) or Bhu-uttan (highlands).
The entry of Bhuddism changed the basic culture of Monpa natives.
