Those of us in the south have experienced Hurricane Irene. Palmico county has been hit hard by this cat 2 storm, a storm that was measured at 750 miles wide. Here in Oriental, we experienced high winds, some say it was 110+ to 134+ winds, water was 5-9 feet during the surge and the rainfall after was incredible.
Hardest hit were the marinas here, most boats were damaged but cosmetically. Our boat Legacy was out at anchor in the lowest part of the south river about 10miles from Oriental. Legacy did great in southwest creek with no damage and just a few chafed lines.
When we started watching Irene, we saw she was taking the same path we normally cruise to the USVIs, and knew she was heading here. We moved the boat thursday, striped the canvas off and battened down inside and outside of the boat, we put in the fiberglass door entry boards and locked her up.
Friday am about 8am we set off, Aubrey drove, while I sat in the front of the dingy with our dog Uraine and headed to shore. After10+ miles of riding from the boat to the marina we got off at Whittaker point marina and got showers, packed the car and headed to our friends home in town.
After showers, Aubrey took the dingy down the creek to Whittaker creek marina where there is a dingy lift and put the dingy and motor on shore, with the help of several strong men.
With the boat secure, the dingy tied to a tree (as water rose there about 10ft) we set off to our friends, unpacked our things and hunkered down.
About 8pm on Friday, we lost our power till 8pm Monday night when it was restored. At the onset of the hurricane, the electrical poles down highway 55 had bent over and fallen on the road and many transformers had blowen up. This is why the power went off, we were cut off.
Highway 55 is the only main road out of Oriental, since I couldn't get through it, I turned down Kershaw Road and went to the back way, it only goes thru Arapaho and up to highway 304 where it joins into Bayboro, the next town up. Those roads were closed.
Sunday a friend and i went that route taking photos and going for supplies in New Bern. Once you got to Highway 70 the power was on, gas stations had lines around the block, police blocked intersections and directed traffic.
ON the way back we went down highway 55 and had to go under the downed electric poles near Kershaw road, a very scary experience..
Roads here were flooded, trees down everywhere and damage like a bomb hit this area, but once the daylight was out, people were out surveying the damages and getting to clean up. Today garbage was collected, but not wood or tree limbs.
Aubrey is on the boat now cleaning it and getting it ready to board soon, right now our problem is the marina lost 90% of its finger piers and many tall piling poles are loose, so its not safe yet.
Our friend lost his sailboat, it sank, another old wooden power boat sank, its very sad.
People who live on boats, where its there home and refuge are devastated when they experience a huge loss such as this.
I will write more on damages and post photos as i can get them onto my computer, stay tuned, were still not out of the woods yet, a new storm is on the way up. Her name is Katta..

It's the 10th, just days from Payday. Besides preparing for another Happy dance cause Payday arrived, I am also preparing my list of things I need this time at the stores I plan to go to.
I've got some new strategies on using coupons. I watched a video about using coupons and have just learned a few better more effective ways that I'm dying to try out.
So I'm scouring the ads, finding new coupons, making a bit more comprehensive lists and hunkering down for a successful shopping trip.
So 7more days, I think I have just enough time to make that list, check it twice and get ready to do some serious shopping.. how about you?

My kitty-Maukie

I put Maukie up on the site recently. He was a creation that was insprired by a friend's daughter. Talluah has a black and white kitty. At night when most of us sit on the decks of our boats, watching the waves roll in the harbor, Talluah has the kitty out on her boat, its chase the kitty or be chased by the kitty. I spend alot of time at night just before dark being entertained by Talluah and her kitty. So I thought since I had a fish pond on the site, why not a kitty, So Tallulah's kitty inspired me to make Maukie.
A little girl, doing nothing on a summer's night, but having fun chasing a kitty around the deck of her parents boat, that is summer life on the water here at home in Oriental.
Thank's Tallulah and her cat.. for inspiring me to make Maukie.. He may not be real, but I enjoy seeing him when i open the page daily to work on it.
It's the little things in life that inspire us!

Sunday is a day to rest, sleep in, get up and have coffee and read the paper in bed. Or if you like me fire up the computer and read the papers in bed and sip mocha coffee. I slept in this am. Normally I go to sleep early and get up early, but the last two nights I have just stayed up late, and going to be late makes me lazy and want to do nothing. So today is I'm going to do nothing, but find ways to improve my site and find more people to visit it.. goal one more visitors, goal two more things to see on the site (more widgets)
three more content in texts, and more bargins. so off i go to internet land to find the tools to make my site do more for me and you.

I have added some new things to the site. Please go visit Mokie our cat, who is at the end of the site, he's friendly and fun. Our fish always need to be fed, they are always hungry and MOkie does enjoy watching them too. To feed the fish click on the white parts of their screen , food appears and they eat it.. really fast.
I have added some new advertisers and some new ads. I also added some enjoyable videos, you can click on them and they will take you to their original site, you can change to what you might like better than what I have on.
Remember You-Tube has the very best instructional videos I have seen, go to http://www.youtube.com
you can make your own video and post them. Many people get discovered that way now or you can watch others and vote on how you liked them. It is a great site and great fun.
I am still working on new pages, its a real conundrum, as i just can't get the idea of how to link the pages together, but like the widgets I struggled with , i will find the answers. I am sure they are staring me in the face. Always seems to be the case
Other than that the new stuff is new and do enjoy it, if you hate it, tell me, post me privately or publicly and tell me what you liked or hated or maybe you can suggest something you found. Allot of the idea's i find from others are many times better than my own.. so talk to me, and Please join the page, it cost nothing and you can be seen with a photo or unseen.. but join..

Been Busy

Like everyone else, I get busy with life. Last few days, I have spent less time on the computer and more time doing things that just needed to get done around here.

I was thinking of what to write about and thought about TV. Years ago we never had to pay for TV or Internet or allot of things, we do now. Once upon a time the signal was free and the only real out lay of cash was to buy a TV, which in the 50s was expensive, or a computer (which in the early days us geeks built them ourselves)

Now we have pay TV, all kinds, Cable, network (due to the new bandwidth changes) Direct TV and a host of others.
I don't want to pay for any of it. So here are ways to avoid paying premium prices for TV and other things you want to watch.

1. Use the Internet more, Hulu TV is a great free TV source.

you can also see shows on all the network sites for free, all the cable sites like A & E, Discovery, or SciFi on either their site or Hulu. If you have access to a good Internet connection (like DSL) or WYFI, then tune in and enjoy.

2. Movies: If your smart, down load early. Since I'm a apple user, I have programs to down load movies to my mac,store them short term and then play or record them for later use. I have no idea what people with Windows have. While my machine has a windows side, I don't go there! I left the dark side years ago to go to mac and never looked back (HAHA)

So down load movies-great way to watch something at night.

3. I burn allot of the movies I down load, so watch those DVDs later, I know when I am at anchor, after dinner is done, dishes are washed and put away and I can put my feet up to relax, I put on a DVD movie and chill out, its a great way to spend 2hrs.

4. If you must spend money on TV, look into premium services on line, Hulu Plus is $7 for a month and you get on demand movies and neat stuff to watch.

5. You can find on line, on demand movies to down load through Net flicks and a host of other movie carriers, they all have sites and you can spend a small fee and get movies. These are the latest blockbusters out there.

With a movie at a theater costing approximately $7-12 a ticket, some of the direct services are cheaper and right to your living room, all you have to do is set up your digital recorder and get the popcorn and enjoy.

While TV is not free anymore, entertainment including TV can cost less to nothing, if you have a computer, and you have a good signal. It just takes time, a little imagination and you can find it on the Internet..
