The Disk Management snap-in is an administrative tool for managing hard disks and the volumes or partitions that they contain. Use the Disk Management snap-in when you want to add, to change, or to remove drive letters on drives, on partitions, or on volumes on your computer's hard disks, CD-ROM drives, and other removable media devices.

Your computer can use up to 26 drive letters, from A through Z. Use drive letters C through Z for hard disk drives. Drive letters A and B are reserved for floppy disk drives. However, if your computer does not have a floppy disk drive, you can assign these letters to removable drives.

Before you modify drive-letter assignments, note the following items:

•	Changing the drive letter of the system volume or the boot volume is not a built-in feature of the Disk Management snap-in.
•	Many MS-DOS-based and Microsoft Windows-based programs refer to specific drive letters for environmental or other variables. If you modify the drive letter, these programs may not functioncorrectly.

The Backup utility in Windows XP Professional helps you protect your data in the event your hard disk fails or files are accidentally erased due to hardware or storage media failure. By using Backup you can create a duplicate copy of all of the data on your hard disk and then archive it on another storage device, such as a hard disk or a tape.

If the original data on your hard disk is accidentally erased or overwritten, or becomes inaccessible because of a hard–disk malfunction, you can easily restore it from the disk or archived copy by using the Restore or Automated System Recovery Wizards. To start Backup or to access Restore and Automated System Recovery: Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools, and then click Backup.

Windows XP Backup, Restore, and Automated System Recovery all function when Windows XP Professional is functioning. If your computer does not start properly, you may need to use Recovery Console. Recovery Console provides a command line during Startup from which you can make system changes when Windows XP Professional doesn’t start. To learn more about Backup, Restore, and Automated System Recovery, see Help and Support Center.

     Recovery Console
You can use Recovery Console to perform many tasks without starting Windows XP, including: starting and stopping services, reading and writing information on a local disk drive, and formatting drives. However, you must install Recovery Console while your computer is still functioning. The Recovery Console feature should be used only by advanced users. Before using Recovery Console, it is recommended that you back up your information on a tape drive, because your local hard disks might be reformatted—thus erased—as part of the recovery. You can also run Recovery Console from the Windows XP CD.

     To install Recovery Console as a Startup Option
Log on to Windows XP Professional as an administrator or as a user with administrator rights.
If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from completing this procedure. Contact your network administrator for assistance. Insert the Windows XP Professional CD into your CD ROM drive. If you’re prompted to upgrade to Windows XP, click No.

From the command prompt—or from the Run command in the Start menu–type the path to the appropriate Winnt32.exe file (on your Windows XP Professional CD), followed by a space and /cmdcons to reference this switch. For example:
e:\1386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons. Follow the instructions that appear.

     To run Recovery Console on a computer if Windows XP Professional does not start

Restart your computer, and then choose Windows Recovery Console from the list of operating systems. Follow the instructions that appear. Recovery Console displays a command prompt. Make the required changes to your system.

Back up your information regularly—using the Backup utility in Windows XP—to keep your archived data up–to–date.
It is also a good idea to backup important data and files before making any system changes, such as adding new hardware, updating drivers or firmware, and editing the registry. For more information about how to back up your data, see Help and Support Center. To see the commands available in Recovery Console, type “help” at the command prompt. To restart your computer, type “exit” to close the Recovery Console command prompt.

Backup Restore - From Win95, 98, Me

Cannot Restore Backups That You Create in Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me with the Windows XP Ntbackup Tool. To resolve this behavior, restore the data from the tape or file by using Msbackup on a computer that is running Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me.

Suggested workaround:

Obtain the Win9x MSBACKUP program and run it in compatibility mode on the WinXP computer. If you do not have the program you can download a copy from Microsoft: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/softlib/mslfiles/msback.exe (558K)

The MSBACK.EXE file is a self-extracting file containing the MSBACKUP.EXE program and supporting files.
Place this file on a floppy disk, open a DOS window, and execute the file. The MSBACKUP.EXE program and supporting files will be extracted to the same floppy.

You must then run the install program. Create a temporary directory on the hard drive and then command A>INSTALL C:\TEMP (or whatever directory name you made on the hard drive). MSBACKUP will then run and attempt to set itself up.
It is during this process that some users tend to find WinXP not allowing the program to proceed.

Backup VB Script

Move the folder/contents to another partition. Create a shortcut to it and place it on your desktop. Anything added will go to the new destination. It is merely a shortcut to the folder.

An added measure: Copy the four lines below into notepad and save as backup.vbs. Change NameofFolder to the correct name and create two backup folders according to the example below. In the done = change NameofFolder as well.

The Backup utility is not included in the default installation of Windows XP Home Edition. The Backup icon is not present on the Start menu in Windows XP Home Edition, nor is Backup listed in Add Remove Programs for Windows XP Home edition.

To manually install Backup:

Double-click the Ntbackup.msi file in the following location on the Windows XP Home Edition CD-ROM to start a wizard that installs Backup: CD-ROM Drive :\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP. When the wizard is complete, click Finish.

Background - Specify the Background Image and Wallpaper Style

These settings allow you to specify the background wallpaper and display style. When this setting is defined users can not choose an alternative background image. Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]

Value Name: Wallpaper, WallpaperStyle. Data Type: REG_SZ (String Value)

To specify the wallpaper create a new string value called "Wallpaper" and set it to the full path and filename of the image.

Additionally, to specify the display style, create a new string value called "WallpaperStyle" and set it to either "0", "1" or "2" according to the list below.

0 - Centered (Default)
1 - Tiled
2 - Stretched

You may need to restart Windows for the changes to take effect.

Background Tab is Missing

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

Look in the right pane for a value called: NoDispBackgroundPage If it exists, double click it and set the value to 0. If it doesn't exist, right click in the right pane and select New, DWord value, and name it NoDispBackgroundPage. Leave the value at 0.

Method 1: Diagnostic and Selection startup modes

Diagnostic startup

Diagnostic startup enables Windows to determine the basic device drivers and software to load when you start Windows. When you use this method, the system temporarily disables Microsoft services such as Networking, Plug and Play, Event Logging, and Error Reporting. Also, you permanently delete all restore points for the System Restore utility.

Note Do not use this method if you want to save your restore points for System Restore or if you must use a Microsoft service to test a problem.

To perform a diagnostic startup, follow these steps:

Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.
On the General tab, click Diagnostic Startup, and then click OK.
Restart your computer.

If the problem does not occur, use Selective startup mode to try to find the problem by turning individual services and startup programs on or off.

Selective startup

Selective startup enables you to select the files and the settings that you want the computer to load when you restart the computer. Select from the following options:

Process System.ini File
Process Win.ini file
Load System Services
Load Startup Items

By default, no options are selected. The following actions apply to these options:

When you select the check box, the configuration file is processed when you restart the computer.
When you clear the check box, the configuration file is not processed when you restart the computer.
When the check box is selected, and you cannot select the check box because it appears dimmed, some items are still loading from that configuration file when you restart the computer.
When the check box is not selected, and you cannot select the check box because it appears dimmed, the configuration file is not present on the computer.
You cannot change the Use Original BOOT.INI option button.

Note When you clear the Load System Services check box, you disable Microsoft services such as Networking, Plug and Play, Event Logging, and Error Reporting. You also permanently delete all restore points for the System Restore utility. Do not clear this check box if you want to keep your restore points for System Restore, or if you have to use a Microsoft service to test a problem.

To perform a selective startup, follow these steps:

Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.
On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
Select or clear the available settings.
Click OK.
Restart your computer.
Repeat steps 1 through 5 until you find the problem.

Change individual file settings

If you know the different settings in each configuration file, you can enable or disable individual settings in the file that has the tab for that file in the System Configuration utility. To prevent individual items in a configuration file from loading when you restart your computer, follow these steps:

Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.
Click a tab: System.ini, Win.ini, Boot.ini, Services, or Startup.
Select or clear the available settings.
Click OK.
Restart your computer.
Repeat steps 1 through 5 until you find the problem.

System.ini and Win.ini options

The SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI tabs in the System Configuration utility have the following options:

Check boxes enable you to enable or to disable an option. To enable an option so that it loads at startup, select the check box or select the option, and then click the Select button. To disable an option so that it does not load at startup, clear the check box or select the option, and then click the Disable button.
Move Up and Move Down buttons enable you to move through the different options when you do not have a mouse.
The New button enables you to create a new entry in the System.ini or in the Win.ini file. Click the button, and type your entry.
The Edit button enables you to edit an existing line in the System.ini or in the Win.ini file. Click the button, and edit the line.

When a check box is unavailable on the SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI tabs, the System Configuration utility temporarily removed the lines.

Note When you click to clear a check box for an item or a line, the Selective Startup option on the General tab is automatically selected.

Manually extract a file

If you have to fix a corrupted file, extract the individual Windows file from the CAB files. To do this, follow these steps:

Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.
On the General tab, click Expand File.
In the File to restore box, type the name of the file that you want to restore.
In the Restore from box, type the path of the Windows XP .cab file from which you want to restore the file. Or, click Browse From to locate the Windows XP .cab file.

Note The Windows XP .cab files are stored in the I386 folder on the Windows XP installation CD.
In the Save file in box, type the path of the folder to which you want to extract the new file. Or, click Browse To to locate the folder that you want.
Click Expand.
In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click OK. If you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.

Return to normal startup

After you complete your troubleshooting and fix your configuration, return to a normal startup. Follow these steps:

Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.
On the General tab, click Normal startup.
Click OK.
Restart your computer.

Method 2: System restore

You can use the System Configuration utility to perform a system restore. There are three possible restore points:

System checkpoints that Windows schedules
Manual restore points that you specify with the System Configuration utility
Installation restore points that occur before you install a program or a service

You can use the system checkpoints or the installation restore points to restore your computer's settings to a date when it operated correctly. This may also help determine the cause of the configuration error.

To perform a system restore, follow these steps:

Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.
On the General tab, click Launch System Restore.
Select Restore my computer to an earlier time, and then click Next.
Calendar dates in bold are possible restore points. Click the most recent one to view system restore information.
Select a system checkpoint or an installation restore point, and then click Next.
Close all other programs.
To start the system restore, click Next.
Your computer restarts.
Repeat steps 1 through 8 until you fix your configuration issue.

Device Conflicts with Device Manager

To start Device Manager:

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.
Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.

Troubleshooting Information

If there is a problem with a device, it is listed in the hardware tree. Also, the problem device has a symbol that indicates the type of problem:
- A black exclamation point (!) on a yellow field indicates the device is in a problem state. Note that a device that is in a problem state can be functioning.
- A problem code explaining the problem is displayed for the device.
- A red "X" indicates a disabled device. A disabled device is a device that is physically present in the computer and is consuming resources, but does not have a protected-mode driver loaded.
- A blue "i" on a white field on a device resource in Computer properties indicates that the Use automatic settings feature is not selected for the device and that the resource was manually selected. Note that this does not indicate a problem or disabled state.
- A green question mark "?" in Device Manager means that a compatible driver for this device is installed, indicating the possibility that all of the functionality may not be available. Note that this applies only to Windows Millennium Edition (Me).
NOTE: Some sound cards and video adapters do not report all of the resources that they use to Windows. This can cause Device Manager to show only one device in conflict, or no conflicts at all. This can be verified by disabling the sound card, or by using the standard VGA video driver to see if the conflict is resolved. Note that this is a known problem with S3 video adapters and 16-bit Sound Blaster sound cards, or those sound cards that are using Sound Blaster emulation for Sound Blaster compatibility.
When you double click a specific device in Device Manager, you see a property sheet. The property sheet has a General tab.

NOTE: Some devices may have other tabs besides the General tab. Not all property sheets have the same tabs; some devices may have a Resources tab, Driver tab, and Settings tab, or some combination of these.

At the top of the property sheet, there is a description of the device. When you click the Resources tab, the window in the middle of the tab indicates which resource types are available for the selected device.

The list box at the bottom contains a Conflicting device list. This list indicates a conflict with an error code.
Note the Use automatic settings check box. If Windows successfully detects a device, this check box is selected, and the device should function correctly. However, if the resource settings are based on Basic Configuration
(where
is any number from 0 to 9), it may be necessary to change the configuration by selecting a different basic configuration from the list. If the particular configuration you want for the device is not listed as a basic configuration, it may be possible to click the Change
Setting button to manually adjust the resource values.

For example, to edit the Input/Output Range setting:
1. Click the Use automatic settings check box to clear it.
2. Click Change Setting.
3. Click the appropriate I/O range for the device.

NOTE: To disable a device in Device Manager, right-click the device, and then click Disable.

If the issue continues to occur, you may need to contact the manufacturer of your computer or motherboard to inquire about how to obtain and install a BIOS update for your computer.

o perform clean-boot troubleshooting, it is necessary to make changes and restart the computer several times to determine if the problem is with something in the operating system environment and, if this is the case, what specific component.

The overall structure of clean-boot troubleshooting that is presented in this article is categorized in the following way:

Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking Support
Removing Registry Entries
Testing User Profiles

Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking Support

The first step to troubleshoot potential environmental issues is to start in Safe mode or in Safe mode with networking support. If the issue is with a program that does not depend on network connectivity, Safe mode is appropriate. If the issue is with a network program, and you are using a network adapter to connect to a network, Safe mode with networking support may let you test the networking program, including browser issues.

Note You cannot use Safe mode with networking support when you use a modem or PC Card connection to a network, because modem drivers and PC Card drivers do not load in Safe mode or in Safe mode with networking support.

To start in Safe mode, follow these steps:

Click Start, and then click Shut Down.
Click Restart, and then click OK.
As the computer restarts, press F8.
Select Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking, and then press ENTER.

If you start in Safe mode or in Safe mode with networking support, and you can perform an operation normally, one with which you were previously experiencing issues, the issue is most likely due to an issue with the environment. Refer to the "Removing Registry Entries" section in this article for information about how to determine what program components may be causing the issue.

Note: You may not be able to test some operations in Safe mode because not all services and devices load in Safe mode or Safe mode with networking support. For example, you cannot test multimedia issues that involve sound, or suspend or hibernate issues in Safe mode. Also, any network programs that rely on the Remote Procedure Call Subsystem (RpcSS) do not work because the RpcSS service does not load in Safe mode with networking support.

If you boot into Safe mode or Safe mode with networking support and the issue still occurs, there may still be an environmental issue; many Function or Filter drivers installed by third-party software may still load in Safe mode.

Therefore, it may be necessary to take an additional step to test and remove third-party drivers in Safe mode.

Removing Registry Entries

If you no longer encounter problems running programs in Safe mode, the issue is mostly likely due to programs that are loading while the Windows 2000 computer is booting.

Programs that are a part of the boot process for Windows 2000 are generally added to one of the following locations:

The Startup folder under the Programs menu.
The Run line for all users in the registry.
The Run line for particular users in the registry.
The "load" entry for all users in the registry.

Note: Because the registry is the location for all computer and program settings for Windows 2000, it is necessary to make a backup of the registry and particular registry entries in case you are no longer able to boot after editing the registry.

To back up the Windows 2000 registry:

Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Backup.
On the General tab, click Emergency Repair Disk and follow the provided directions.

The Startup folder icons are loaded from two locations. To remove these entries:

Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Taskbar and Start Menu Properties.
On the Advanced tab, click Advanced.
Open the Startup folder for the user account with which you logged on, and then click Cut on the Edit menu.
Create a SysDriversBak folder, create a UserStartup folder under the folder, open the UserStartup folder, and then click Paste.
Repeat steps 1 through 2 and navigate to the All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder.
Click Cut on the Edit menu, navigate to the SysDriversBak folder, create an AllUsersStartup folder, and then click Paste.

To remove values for the Run line in the registry for all users:

Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Open the Run key and note the entries on the right pane.
For each value except for the Default value, click the value, click Export Registry File on the Registry menu, navigate to the SysDriversBak folder, and then save the file using the following naming convention
HKLMRun_(valuename)
where (valuename) is the name of the value that you are exporting.
Click Delete on the Edit menu.
Repeat these steps for each value under the Run key.
Check the related RunOnce and RunOnceEx keys to see if a program was not completely installed and repeat steps 3 through 5, except that you need to change the naming convention to reflect RunOnce or RunOnceEx.

To remove values for the Run line in the registry for the user account with which you are logged on as:

Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Open the Run key.
Highlight the first value below Default (value not set), click the value, click Export Registry File on the Registry menu, navigate to the SysDriversBak folder, and then save the file using the following naming convention:
HKCURun_(valuename)
where (valuename) is the name of the value that you are exporting.
Click Delete on the Edit menu.
Repeat these steps for each value under the Run key.
Check the related RunOnce key to see if a program was not completely installed and repeat steps 3 through 5, except that you need to change the naming convention to reflect RunOnce.

To remove value data under "load":

Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
If the value "load" (without quotation marks) has any value data, click Export Registry File on the Registry menu, navigate to the SysDriversBak folder and save the file as HKCUload.
Double-click the "load" value and clear the value data.
When you have completed these steps, restart your computer, and test.

If the problem no longer occurs, then you should merge the values in the following suggested order:

Startup icons from both the All Users group and the user account with which you log on
HKCURun_ values
HKLMRun_ values
HKCUload

To add the icons for the Startup menu:

Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Windows Explorer.
Navigate to the SysDriversBak folder that you created earlier, open the AllUsersStartup folder, click Select All, and then click Copy on the Edit menu.
Navigate to the following folder, and then click Paste:
\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
Navigate to SysDriversBak\UserStartup folder, and then click Copy on the Edit menu.
Navigate to the following folder, and then click Paste:
\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
where username is the name of the user that you have logged on as.
Restart your computer and test.

Testing User Profiles

Sometimes, a user's specific information may be corrupted, but other users on the same computer may have no problem. To determine if this is the case, log on as a new user or create a new user account, and then test it.

Note: Sometimes, a program may work correctly when you log on with the default Administrator account only. Older programs may have this problem.

If the default Administrator profile becomes corrupt, you need to reinstall Windows 2000 to correct this problem.

All user-specific configuration information (which is displayed in Registry Editor as HKEY_CURRENT_USER) is stored in the Ntuser.dat file in the \Documents and Settings\username folder.

Disabling Third-Party Services

It is sometimes necessary to disable third-party services that are installed to eliminate problems. Safe mode and Safe mode with Networking do not load third-party services, so if Safe mode works, the problem may be due to a third-party service that is loading.

- Choose the Normal Startup mode on the General tab to start Windows normally and undo the changes you made using the System Configuration Utility.

Step 4: Optional step to disable features

If the clean boot fixed the error, you do not have to perform this step.

Important If your problem is not fixed and you do have to follow this step, it permanently removes all restore points from your computer. The System Restore feature uses restore points to restore your computer to an earlier state. If you remove the restore points, you can no longer restore Windows to an earlier state.

This step temporarily disables Microsoft features such as Plug and Play, networking, event logging, and error reporting.

Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.
The System Configuration Utility dialog box is displayed.
Click the General tab, click to clear the Load System Services check box, and then click OK.
When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.

If these steps helped you start your computer in a clean-boot state, you are finished. If these steps did not help, go to the “Next Steps” section. If you have to return your computer to a normal startup state, go to “Steps to configure Windows to use a Normal startup state”.

Steps to configure Windows to use a Normal startup state

After you used the clean boot to resolve your problem, you can follow these steps to configure Windows XP to start normally.

Click Start, and then click Run.
Type msconfig, and then click OK.
The System Configuration Utility dialog box is displayed.
Click the General tab, click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services, and then click OK.
When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.
